CHARITIES REPORT Summer 2020

The Radley community of boys, staff, friends and families have all come together this term doing great and wonderful things by fundraising, making donations and helping others in their communities during these difficult times.

Support for charities is an integral part of the Radley ethos and this term has shown this at its very best.

This has been a difficult time for so many, and charities are also finding this period extremely challenging.

With the cancellation of many major fund-raising events, charity shop closures, a decline in donations and with volunteers unable to help, there are huge financial pressures, especially for the smaller charities.

Fundraising and volunteering highlights include: the astonishing 14 marathons in 14 days completed by Will P, with great support from staff and friends at school, for NHS Southampton; Freddie L with a number of 6.2 boys and friends walking 18km (raising a magnificent ÂŁ34,000 for the Charlie Waller Memorial Trust); George B and the C Social Removes who ‘Hit-A-Ball’ for 12 Hours for Access Sport; Jude W set up a successful collaborative art project highlighting mental health issues raising funds for Young Minds. Other activities have been cooking for Food for Heroes, working in food packing factories, making scrubs and protective gear at school, at home and in the DT department, delivering food to foodbanks, gardening for others, helping the homeless on the streets in London, picking up prescriptions, helping the elderly and volunteering in shops.

The annual Fifth Form Charity/Service day was also embraced by the Fifth Years with a new global dimension. It included boys delivering food to care homes, Ollie B-S and the E Social boys climbing the equivalent of Mount Everest (on their stairs) whilst raising funds for John Masefield House, food donations in Thailand, church cleaning, beach cleaning from Hong Kong to Cornwall, shopping for vulnerable local residents, re-roofing, litter picking, cooking and gardening in the local communities.

Although the Sewell Centre Gallery has been temporarily closed, they have supported an online charity exhibition: ‘Art from the Heart’, working with Zuleika Gallery raising money for the Oxfordshire Hospitals.

Over the summer, a number of further charitable ventures have taken place, including Will B, George H, Fred L, Dominic S, Fred W and Tommy W’s epic five-day, 407 mile cycle ride raising an astonishing £37,000 for The Thames Valley Air Ambulance; Oliver B walking the Monopoly board and covering 41 miles, raising over £1,500 for Dom’s Fund and The Bone Cancer Research Trust and Archie D and his mother, whose triathlon for Breast Cancer UK raised over £600. Alex W, Maintenance Technician at Radley will be taking part in Europe’s Toughest Mudder, running through the night in August to raise money for Kennington Youth Club.

Overall, aside from the volunteering and community help, a magnificent sum in the region of £143,000 has been raised by the whole school, staff and students, over the past academic year for important causes.
