New Independent Indian Cinema – a film genre with a strong identity

The New independent Indian cinema has emerged as a distinctive cinematic form. Drawing from his latest publication - Indian Indies: A Guide to New Independent Indian, Ashvin Devasundaram traces important milestones in the evolution of this dynamic film sector. The talk will draw attention to boundary-pushing, unflinchingly interrogative and radically evocative Indian Indie films that traverse LGBTQ+ issues, female empowerment, caste discrimination, populist politics and religious violence.
