PORTABLE TETRA COVERAGE FOR TEMPORARY AND EMERGENCY OPERATIONS

Where Communication Cannot Fail

Modern buildings and underground infrastructure create significant challenges for emergency communications.

Dense concrete cores and steel reinforcement in high-rise construction or in underground transport systems create a ‘Faraday cage’ effect that causes signal attenuation and unpredictable coverage. Emergency services and infrastructure operators need a way to maintain reliable coverage across these environments, which is a considerable operational challenge.

The Standard for Mission Critical Wireless

About TETRA

TETRA is the radio communications system used by emergency services for reliable operational communication in difficult environments. Specifically designed for emergency communication, it is effective in environments where standard coverage can be unreliable.

Operating within the 430 MHz and 870 MHz frequency bands, it offers multiple technical advantages:

• Superior penetration through concrete, steel and underground structures

• Enhanced diffraction, allowing signals to bend around obstacles and into coverage shadow areas

• Predictable coverage footprint with fewer localized dead zones

• Reduced infrastructure dependency during operational incidents

• Reliable vertical and underground propagation in complex structures

• Optimized for reliable, low latency, mission-critical voice services

Whether operating in reinforced high-rise buildings, below ground in transport infrastructure, or across difficult terrain, TETRA can deliver the stability and continuity required for tough operational conditions.

But what happens in buildings without existing TETRA coverage?

The Solution

RADIAFLEX® Redeployable (RD) System

The RADIAFLEX RD System is a portable TETRA communications network for rapid deployment during emergencies, regardless of environment or existing infrastructure.

Developed initially for emergency services, RFS radiating cable is deployed from a portable drum and functions as a continuous distributed antenna. The result is consistent coverage without repeater infrastructure that can be redeployed as required.

System Characteristics

• Portable drum for fast deployment

• Continuous radiating cable for reliable coverage up to 600m

• Pre-connectorized components for rapid installation

• Integrated band-pass filtering manages interference

• Compatible with voice and telemetry integration

• Global spectrum agility for deployments across both 430 MHz and 870 MHz

The system is designed for temporary deployment conditions and maintains operational performance during rapid installation and repeated field use.

Real-World Testing & Use Cases

Testing with UK Fire Services

RFS worked alongside a large UK fire service to fully assess the performance of the RADIAFLEX RD System, focusing on optimizing system performance and deployability within challenging operational environments.

Testing focused on:

• High-rise stairwell deployments

• Deep underground propagation

• Rapid temporary infrastructure setup

• Multi-system operational compatibility

• Deployment under constrained access conditions

Field testing included deployments within The Shard and Clapham underground shelters, allowing performance to be assessed in both high-rise and underground environments.

Operational feedback from response teams directly informed design iterations for a solution built for real-world deployments.

Additional Applications

Although originally developed for the emergency services, the platform is also suited to temporary communications deployment in other operationally challenging environments.

Mining & Subsurface

Mission-critical comms during tunnel expansion or deep extraction.

Heavy Construction

Robust temporary networks in harsh, high-rise build environments.

Defense & Tactical

Rapid field communications where standard infrastructure is nonexistent.
