T
HE yearling sales seem to come round more quickly every year, and Arqana August signals the start of a busy few weeks for buyers, vendors and breeders across Europe. The summer sales season kicks off at Deauville before attention switches to Doncaster for the Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale, followed by Tattersalls Somerville Yearling Sale in Newmarket and then onto Germany for BBAG in Baden-Baden. The four sales offer their own distinct appeal, but perhaps the best advertisement for each is the quality of horse to have emerged from their rings. Arqana has had a remarkable season through Diamond Necklace, the €1.7 million 2024 saletopper who remains unbeaten and has added the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches, Prix de Diane and Nassau Stakes to her Prix Marcel Boussac success at two. Ballydoyle’s star filly is a daughter of Monceaux’s remarkable Predenzia, whose yearlings have collectively made more than €14 million at Arqana over the years. Another chapter in that story will be written this year when Diamond Necklace’s Siyouni threequarter brother comes under the hammer in Deauville on Sunday. There have been plenty of success stories from the other sales too. Power Blue has continued to advertise Goffs UK Premier, while seven-time Grade 1 winner Gaelic Warrior remains a fine flagbearer for BBAG. Somerville has also produced its share of smart performers, with Solario Stakes winner A Bit Of Spirit and the Dubai-based El Nasseeb among those to have enhanced the sale’s reputation. The headline prices will command plenty of attention, but the real excitement lies in discovering which of this year’s yearlings will become tomorrow’s stars. Good luck to all buyers, vendors and breeders. Lydia Symonds Global Bloodstock Editor

Martin Stevens studies the list of new stallions whose progeny are up for sale this summer PADDINGTON was the most expensive member of the 2024 intake of new sires in Europe, retiring to Coolmore at a fee of €55,000 on the back of winning the Irish 2,000 Guineas, St James’s Palace Stakes, Eclipse and Sussex Stakes during a golden summer in his three-year-old season. The son of Siyouni had some issues getting mares in foal in his debut season. He covered 144 mares but has only 41 yearlings registered so far. His fee was subsequently cut sharply but his fertility is reported to have improved and he was sent 137 mares at Coolmore last year. Paddington is set to be represented by five first-crop yearlings at Arqana August, in the ring in which he himself was bought for €420,000. All are colts and they include a three-parts brother to Chantilly Listed winner Shadizi from Haras de l’Hotellerie (lot 163). The Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale catalogue features two lots by Paddington, one of them a filly out of the dual Listed-placed Golden Horn mare Makinmedoit from Galloway Stud (241). Gestüt Brümmerhof consigns the only Paddington yearling to BBAG and it is quite a one-off, as it is a three-parts brother to Hannover Listed winner Villefranche (52). Paddington spearheads an especially strong group of milers in the class of 2024. Modern Games, the Dubawi half-brother to 1,000 Guineas heroine Mawj who notched a Breeders’ Cup double in the Juvenile Turf and Mile and also won the Poule d’Essai des Poulains and Lockinge, obviously has strong qualifications to excel at stud. There are four lots by the Godolphin homebred available at Arqana August, including the Haras des Capucines-consigned halfbrother to five winners including exciting two-yearold Abraham Lincoln (29), and the same number by him on offer at Goffs UK Premier, including Bearstone Stud’s half-brother to Prix Miesque winner Lullaby Moon (13). The BBAG catalogue includes two lots by Modern Games, including Gestüt Westerberg’s filly out of German champion two-yearold Diamond Dove (91), and Tattersalls Somerville features another two lots by the sire, including Ballyhimikin Stud’s filly out of the Listed-winning Siyouni mare Coeur Macen (228).
From champion milers to bargain sprinters – meet the 2024 first-crop sires whose yearlings are about to hit market Dewhurst and 2,000 Guineas hero Chaldean, a well-bred son of Frankel, has been a popular choice of breeders due to his good looks so it will be exciting to see if his stock have got them too. We will get our first glimpse of his yearlings in Deauville, where five are set to sell. The picks on paper are perhaps Haras du Cadran’s colt who is the first foal out of the Group 3-winning Muhaarar mare Paris Peacock (112) and Haras de Saint-Pair’s half-sister to Prix Minerve scorer Eternal Pearl out of the Listed-winning Oasis Dream mare Pearly Steph (115). Chaldean has seven lots catalogued for Doncaster, including a Houghton Bloodstock-consigned halfbrother to US Grade 1 hero Max Player and Champagne Stakes winner Seaheange (115), no less, and two lots entered in each of the BBAG and Tattersalls Somerville fixtures.
Champion two-year-old and Irish 2,000 Guineas victor Native Trail is by Oasis Dream and from the family of the useful late sire Calyx. The biggest selection of his stock at the early yearling sales – numbering 15 lots – is at Doncaster. Two whose pages leap out of the catalogue are the halfsisters to Listed winners Belisa Bay (5) and Kendam (50) from Egmont Stud and Lynn Lodge Stud respectively. Queen Anne Stakes winner Triple Time must be the bestbred horse in this cohort, being by Frankel and one of eight black-type performers out of blue hen Reem Three, also the granddam of Group 1 winners Inisherin and Rosallion. A sneakily well-bred member of his early salesbound lots is the colt out of the Listed-placed Kodi Bear mare Helens Well, who wasn’t beaten all that far when eighth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile
Fillies Turf (341), set to be presented at Arqana V2 by the Fairway Consignment. Speaking of milers: don’t forget Mutasaabeq, the triple Group 2-winning son of Invincible Spirit and Ghanaati who spent one year at the National Stud before his sale to India, as he covered a few decent mares in his short time in Newmarket. He has one lot at the early yearling sales, a filly out of the multiple winner Havana Bound being sold by Sarah Fanning at Doncaster (138). Good Guess bridges the gap between the milers and the sprinters in this group as the son of Kodiac really flourished over seven furlongs, the distance at which he won the Prix Djebel and Prix Jean Prat, the last victory achieved by three lengths. He has been wildly popular with breeders in retirement and consequently has huge drafts at the yearling sales, especially at Goffs UK Premier
(25 lots catalogued) and Tattersalls Somerville (11), where the sort of stock he seems likely to produce should be in favour with buyers. Plenty of his early offerings are related to black-type performers but one who stands out on that score is the half-brother to three stakes winners in Acklam Express, Alpha Capture and Maglev (418) being consigned to Doncaster by Galbertstown Stud. Sprinters are, as always, well represented in the intake of new yearling sires and Group 1 winners Little Big Bear and Shaquille were the best of them on the track. Little Big Bear, by reliable precocity source No Nay Never, is showcased by his joint-breeder Camas Park Stud with a half-brother to US Grade 2 winner and Grade 1 third True Valor (192) at Arqana August, while Shaquille, the Commonwealth Cup and July Cup winner, is

DEWHURST AND 2,000 GUINEAS HERO CHALDEAN (BELOW) HAS BEEN A POPULAR CHOICE OF BREEDERS DUE TO HIS GOOD LOOKS SO IT WILL BE EXCITING TO SEE IF HIS STOCK HAVE GOT THEM TOO. WE WILL GET OUR FIRST GLIMPSE OF HIS YEARLINGS IN DEAUVILLE
well represented at Goffs UK Premier and Tattersalls Somerville, with Manor Farm Wiltshire’s colt out of Norfolk Stakes heroine Shang Shang Shang (347) standing out on pedigree at Doncaster. Dragon Symbol, who was first past the post in a Group 1 but was demoted to second in the Commonwealth Cup, was the talk of last year’s foal sales after his lots sold like hot cakes. Goffs UK Premier and Tattersalls Somerville are the places to be for a wide selection of his progeny. Group-winning sprinters Bouttemont, Castle Star, El Caballo and The Antarctic stand at cheap and cheerful prices but all are by serious sires and have blue-chip pedigrees. Their stock should prove popular with bargain hunters looking for something to get on with quickly on the track. In a rather depressing sign of the times, the only pure middle-distance performer who retired into the Flat ranks in Britain and Ireland in 2024 was Mostahdaf, a son of Frankel who won the Prince of Wales’s Stakes and Juddmonte International. Even more gloomily, he is yet to cover a three-figure book
– although, with totals of 90, 74 and 77, he has at least been steady. The highest rated racecourse performer in his intake, he has one lot each in Arqana August and V2 (both consigned by the far-sighted Pierre Talvard of Haras du Cadran) as well as three in Goffs UK Premier and another singleton at Tattersalls Somerville – an intriguing lot, that, being a filly out of Hilary Needler Trophy winner Lady Ayresome who will open the auction as lot 1. What really highlights the poor treatment of middledistance performance in the industry now is the fact that Hurricane Lane, another son of Frankel who won the Irish Derby, Grand Prix de Paris and St Leger, retired straight on to Coolmore’s jumps roster. Of course that didn’t mean he was forbidden from covering Flat mares, though, and evidently a few more open-minded breeders used him for that purpose, as he has a smattering of yearlings on sale in the coming months. Rathasker Stud is even consigning a filly and a colt by him to the usually more speedorientated Goffs UK Premier and Tattersalls Somerville sales. It’s a huge year for French
breeders as a much larger than usual number of high-class colts retired to stud in Normandy in 2024 and therefore have first-crop yearlings set to sell. Ace Impact outranks all his British and Irish peers in terms of RPR thanks to his unbeaten champion three-year-old season in which he bolted up in the Prix du Jockey Club and Arc. Mishriff and Vadeni were both also outstanding multiple top-level winners, while Onesto is a precious Group 1-winning son of Frankel out of a Sea The Stars mare. Angel Bleu achieved the rare distinction of winning the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere and Criterium International at two, while fellow Sumbe stallion Belbek also landed the Lagardere. Lusail, a high-class performer by Mehmas, is the definition of commercial, while Erevann has been immensely popular with breeders and buyers as a goodlooking son of Dubawi and Ervedya.

3yo b f St Mark’s Basilica Prudenzia (Dansili) Undoubtedly the leading three-year-old filly this year, Diamond Necklace has more than lived up to her sparkling billing with a perfect six-fromsix race record. Bought by MV Magnier from Ecurie des Monceaux for a sale-topping €1.7 million at the 2024 sale, the daughter of St Mark’s Basilica has repaid her connections’ faith in spades. Trained by Aidan O’Brien for the Coolmore partners, Diamond Necklace won all three of her starts at two, headed by a clear-cut win in the Prix Marcel Boussac at Longchamp on Arc day last October. Better was to come as she registered two Classic victories in the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches at Longchamp – pulling three lengths clear of her rivals – and then the Prix de Diane at Chantilly. She stepped up to the plate against her elders in the Nassau Stakes at Goodwood, readily accounting for the Group 1-winning Friendly Soul by two and three-quarter lengths. She has plenty of big-race options heading into the autumn and it appears the world is truly her oyster. Monceaux will also consign her Siyouni three-parts brother at this year’s sale as lot 128.
Constitution River
3yo b c Wootton Bassett Chuppy (Le Havre) Ballydoyle’s treasure trove of
riches also includes Prix du Jockey Club and Eclipse winner Constitution River, a colt described as the best Ryan Moore has ridden, which is a significant statement. Bought for a comparatively modest €400,000 at the 2024 August Sale, the son of Wootton Bassett finished a close-up second to the smart Distant Storm on his debut at Newmarket’s July meeting last year. He has since gone on to be unbeaten, winning a Galway maiden by nearly four lengths before Group 2 success in the Futurity Stakes at the Curragh. He was not seen until reappearing in the Dee Stakes at Chester, where he put in a commanding performance to defeat subsequent Royal Ascot and Goodwood Group 3 winners Generic and Shayem by at least seven lengths. He was duly sent off a warm order for the Prix du Jockey Club and defied a wide draw to defeat stablemate and fellow Group 1 winner Hawk Mountain by three-quarters of a length. He backed that up against his elders with a fluent win in the Eclipse at Sandown and he looks set for an epic showdown against the brilliant Ombudsman at York next. Out of a Le Havre sister to the top-class Wonderful Tonight, Constitution River has proved himself a performer out of the very top drawer.
Opera Ballo
4yo b c Ghaiyyath - Dubai Opera (Invincible Spirit) A €600,000 purchase by Godolphin from the Haras des Capucines draft in 2023, this Ghaiyyath colt has proved a top-class talent pretty much
right from the off. He made quite the statement when bolting up on his debut as a three-year-old last January and he has steadily progressed to the highest level in two seasons. After an emphatic second win at Kempton, he bounced back from Craven Stakes defeat to land a first stakes win in the Sir Henry Cecil Stakes at Newmarket’s July course. He ended that term with a second to high-class Zeus Olympios in the Joel Stakes at Newmarket’s Rowley Mile course. He has done very little wrong this year, following up a three-length Meydan Group 2 score with a first Group 1 success in the Jebel Hatta. His next outing saw him slam Field Of Gold and Zeus Olympios in the Bet365 Mile at Sandown, recording a career-high Racing Post Rating of 126. He has fared well in two runs since, placing third in the Queen Anne and Sussex Stakes despite racing rather freely. He should have plenty more to give as he matures more and he is a top-class performer for his burgeoning young sire.
Blue Bolt
4yo b f Blue Point - Mayhem (Whipper) Juddmonte’s Blue Point filly has well and truly rewarded connections with two Group 1 wins this year, taking her 2026 tally to four victories from four starts. A €400,000 August Sale graduate, Blue Bolt progressed from novice wins at Newbury
and Windsor to a first stakes success in the Coral Distaff at Sandown last summer. She rounded off the campaign with a second in the Atalanta Stakes back at the Esher track before producing an excellent effort to finish runner-up to Fallen Angel in the Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket.
The Andrew Balding-trained filly has been faultless this term, beginning with a score in the Conqueror Fillies’ Stakes at Goodwood and then supplementing a triumph in the Duke Of Cambridge Stakes at Royal Ascot with Group 1 wins in the Falmouth Stakes and Prix Rothschild. The Matron Stakes has been
In Gr.1 Prince of Wales’s Stakes and Gr.1 Juddmonte International glory, Mostahdaf defeated the winners of no-less than 15 Group 1 races and became one of only three horses in over 50 years to triumph in both races in the same season.
nominated as her next likely target and she will likely prove hard to topple.
Libertango
2yo b f No Nay Never Ein Gedi (Oasis Dream) Libertango made €130,000 to Blue Farm Bloodstock at last year’s August Sale and she has since gone on to shine both in
the sales ring and on the racecourse. The daughter of No Nay Never was purchased by Old Mill Stud’s Rob Speers on behalf of owner Vefa Ibrahim Araci for 400,000gns at the Tattersalls Craven Breeze-Up Sale in April and she soon showed her talents for George Boughey.
Of all the first-crop yearling sires, he is the joint highest-rated in Europe – and the highest-rated stallion to retire to stud in Britain in the past three seasons.
She started her career with a clear-cut success at Leicester in May and duly stepped forward for that performance when defeating Sun Goddess in the Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot, delivering a withering run to score with something in hand. She was turned over at oddson to fellow Craven Sale
graduate Senorita Bonita in the Duchess of Cambridge Stakes at Newmarket, but since that rival has shown plenty of talent of her own, it can still be marked down as a highly promising run. From a family filled with Group winners, she can still make her mark wherever she goes.

‘A top-class pedigree and this filly will be a valuable proposition on track and in the breeding barn’ Kitty Trice with the 12 lots who have caught her eye before the sale kicks off this weekend Saturday Lot 16
B f Ace Impact - Glorious Sight (Singspiel) Consigned by Haras de Saint Pair An early lot into the ring and a filly from the first crop of unbeaten champion Ace Impact, it will be fascinating to see how Haras de Saint Pair’s yearling fares. She is not only a daughter of the Arc and Prix du Jockey Club winner, she is out of the Listed-winning and Classicplaced Glorious Sight, making her a half-sister to Group 2 scorer Glycon and the Listedwinning Glaer. There is proven top-class quality throughout the page as top-class performers Hydrangea, Hermosa, as well as 2025 Futurity Trophy victor and 2026 Prix du Jockey Club runner-up Hawk Mountain, who features under second dam, the Group-winning Zelding. The page also contains fellow top-class winners Whirl and The United States, as well as Group 1-placed Trinity College and Sounds Of Heaven.
Lot 26
B f Kingman - Helenium (Frankel) Coulonces This daughter of Kingman is already in possession of a topclass family and it is one which could be further enhanced by Spirited Gesture. The close
relation to this filly, being a Kingman half-sister to Helenium, scooted up on her debut at Newmarket this month, with connections eying up loftier targets after that twoand-a-quarter-length win. Helenium is a half-sister to Coventry Stakes winner and Group 1-winning sire Calyx, as well as the stakes-winning Coppice. They are all in turn out of the Group-winning juvenile and Prix Marcel Boussac runner-up Helleborine, an Observatory sister to Haydock Sprint Cup winner African Rose and to the dam of European champion juvenile and Irish 2,000 Guineas winner Native Trail. The carefully nurtured Juddmonte family also includes Dewhurst winner Distant Music.
Lot 29
B c Modern Games - High Celebrity (Invincible Spirit) Haras des Capucines From the first crop of Darley’s French 2,000 Guineas winner and dual Breeders’ Cup scorer Modern Games, this colt holds a pedigree which will surely receive plenty of timely updates. He is a half-brother to the exciting Abraham Lincoln, a €2.3 million purchase by MV Magnier and White Birch Farm at last year’s sale. The Wootton Bassett colt made a striking winning debut at the Curragh in June and followed up with a valiant second in the Superlative Stakes, only just being denied by the more experienced Al Hudaiba. braham Lincoln holds plenty of Group 1 entries for the Ballydoyle-Coolmore team in

the months ahead and he remains a potentially top-class prospect. The pair are out of the Group-winning Invincible Spirit mare High Celebrity, the dam of Queen’s Vase runnerup Highbury. Her second dam, Surfside, was a multiple Grade 1 winner in the US and is in turn out of Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies winner Flanders.
Lot 63
B f Frankel - Lightening Pearl (Marju) Ecurie des Monceaux Ecurie des Monceaux sends its typically power-packed draft to Arqana and this beautifully bred daughter of Frankel could get the team off to a good start on day one. The filly is out of Cheveley Park Stakes winner Lightening Pearl, making her a sister to Group 3 scorer Lightening Quick, as well as a half-sister to the stakes-placed Deep Impact filly Matenro Diva. Lightening Pearl, besides being a Group 1-winning talent, is a half-sister to Japanese Grade 1 and Hong Kong Vase victor Satono Crown, while the further family traces back to St Leger and Gold Cup winner Classic Cliche. In short, this is a topclass pedigree and this filly will be a valuable proposition on the track and in the breeding barn for her new connections.
Sunday Lot 115
Ch f Chaldean - Pearly Steph (Oasis Dream) Haras de Saint Pair A first-crop daughter of 2,000 Guineas and Dewhurst winner Chaldean from Haras de Saint Pair’s foremost family, this filly is another who is likely to attract plenty of attention when she goes under the hammer. The chestnut is out of the Listed-winning Oasis Dream mare Pearly Steph, making her a three-parts sister to dual Group 3 scorer Eternal Pearl and a half-sister to the dam of this year’s Prix Eugene Adam winner Pearled Majesty. Pearly Steph is in turn out of German Group scorer Pearl Banks, making her a half-sister to Matron Stakes winner Pearls Galore and the stakes-winning Lucky Lycra. This filly’s third dam is Haras de Saint Pair’s foundation mare and Prix Vermeille winner Pearly Shells.
Lot 120
B f Frankel - Philomene (Dubawi) Ecurie des Monceaux A filly from a family which needs little explaining. A daughter of Frankel, this
Ecurie des Monceauxconsigned yearling is out of Philomene, a Group 3 winner for Andre Fabre and Godolphin who also finished second in the Prix de Diane. Philomene is a daughter of the extraordinary Prudenzia, a true blue hen for Monceaux. Besides producing Irish Oaks heroine Chicquita, Australian Group 1 scorer Magic Wand and Philomene, she is responsible for undefeated superstar Diamond Necklace. That 2024 Arqana August saletopper has won six races from as many starts, most recently in the Nassau Stakes, while she claimed dual French Classic glory earlier this campaign. She also struck gold in the Prix Marcel Boussac at two last year. The family has continued to make its presence felt as Chicquita is the dam of Curragh Cup scorer and Goodwood Cup runner-up Continues page 8

B c Siyouni - Prudenzia (Dansili) Ecurie des Monceaux Yet another lot from the allconquering Monceaux and arguably the pre-sale standout, this colt holds one of the finest pedigrees anywhere in the world. The bay is by perennial leading sire Siyouni and out of blue hen Prudenzia, whose Group 1-winning progeny include this year’s dual French Classic heroine and clear-cut Nassau Stakes winner Diamond Necklace. The unbeaten daughter of St Mark’s Basilica has a whole host of exciting autumn targets and it would be a surprise if she could not add to her four top-level triumphs. The Ballydoyle-trained three-year-old is a half-sibling to Irish Oaks winner Chicquita and Australian Group 1 scorer Magic Wand, as well as Group scorer and Prix de Diane runner-up Philomene and smart stayer Enemy. This colt’s Night Of Thunder half-sister, now named Marylebone, sold to Amo Racing for a saletopping €3 million at last year’s August Sale.

B f Night Of Thunder Prudente (Dansili) Ecurie des Monceaux Monceaux offers this regally bred filly, a daughter of champion sire Night Of Thunder and a sister to the aforementioned Vespertilio. Besides being a sister to the Group 2 winner and multiple Group 1-placed performer, she is also a three-parts sister to a Zarak filly who made €1.1 million at this sale last year. It would be safe to assume this yearling could well command a seven-figure price too. This exceptional page includes Prudenzia, Diamond Necklace, Chicquita and Magic Wand, while notable mentions also have to go to the Groupwinning Pacifique and Paix, the former a Montjeu halfsister to Prudente and Prudenzia. The latter is in turn the dam of dual Listed winner and recent Prix Maurice de Nieuil runner-up Parachutiste and the Group 3-placed Skydance. Skydance herself sold to Al Shira’aa Racing for €1m at the August Sale in 2024 and looks set to build on her last-timeout third in the Valiant Stakes at Ascot.

Racing Post Thursday, August 13, 2026
From just 32 horses offered at Arqana August Sale between 2020 and 2024:
3 Group 1 winners (9%) 8 Stakes Winners (25%) 11 Blacktype Horses (34%)
Stakes winner Fancy Blue. Besides that notable performer close up in her pedigree, the filly can also count dual Derby hero and Breeders’ Cup turf winner and leading sire High Chaparral among her relatives. This son of Sadler’s Wells is a brother to Chenchikova, the second dam of this filly. Other notable performers include Dante Stakes victor and Secretariat Stakes runner-up Black Bear Island, Beresford Stakes winner and National Stakes-placed David Livingston, plus Australian Group 2 winner and Belmont Derby third Hunting Horn.
Lot 260
B c Wootton Bassett - Bateel (Dubawi) Fairway Consignment Another offering by the muchmissed Wootton Bassett, Fairway Consignment’s colt is out of the brilliant Dubawi mare Bateel, a winner of the 2017 Prix Vermeille and runner-up in the British Champions Fillies and Mares Stakes. Bateel has proved a smart performer at stud, producing Prix d’Harcourt winner and narrow Prix Ganay runner-up Map Of Stars, a winner of the Wolferton Stakes at Royal Ascot this year. The Sea The Stars gelding is reportedly on target for a tilt at the Cox Plate later this year. Bateel is also the dam of the Group-winning Kingman filly Tajlina, while her Frankel colt The Odyssey recently landed his second win for Francis Graffard at La Teste De Buch and looks to have more to offer. Bateel produced a Frankel colt again this year.
Lot 287
B f Kodiac - Chuppy (Le Havre) Haras du Cadran Another offering with an exemplary and very current pedigree, Haras du Cadran’s Kodiac filly should garner plenty of attention thanks to
the exploits of her illustrious half-brother. The filly is a half-sister to this year’s outstanding threeyear-old colt Constitution River, a winner of the Prix du Jockey Club and Eclipse. The Wootton Bassett colt sold from this sale in 2024 when making €400,000 to MV Magnier, a price which looks a bargain given his Group 1 wins and formidable stallion potential. Their dam, the Le Havre mare Chuppy, is a sister to topclass performer Wonderful Tonight, a winner of the 2020 Prix de Royallieu and British Champions Fillies and Mares Stakes for David Menuisier. The family includes a number of top-class performers, including dual Derby victor and 2,000 Guineas hero Camelot. Needless to say, this filly is a valuable proposition for whoever buys her, both as a race filly and then as a broodmare when the time comes.
Lot 304
Ch c Baaeed - Dardiza (Street Cry) The Channel Consignment This second-crop son of world turf champion Baaeed has the pedigree to make an impact at the later stage of the sale. The Channel Consignment’s colt is a half-brother to US Graded scorer Guildsman, while their Princess Zahra Aga Khan-bred Street Cry dam is a half-sister to the dam of champion Almanzor. Almanzor’s victories included brilliant wins in the Prix du Jockey Club, Champion Stakes and Irish Champion Stakes. The page also includes the Classic-winning Darjina, a topclass performer for Princess Zahra Aga Khan whose wins besides the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches included the Prix du Moulin, while she also took part in some famous tussles with the brilliant Goldikova and Halfway To Heaven.

Summer Yearlings Arqana
‘I FEEL THAT BUYING ANY HORSE IS A JOURNEY – I JUST HOPE THAT I’LL BE ABLE TO PLAY A SMALL PART IN SOMEONE’S JOURNEY AT ARQANA’
Martin Stevens meets the man tasked with selling Arqana to the world
R
ICHARD GIBSON is certainly well qualified for the post of international client relations director at Arqana, which he took up on the eve of Royal Ascot this year. The 56-year-old, originally from Northumberland, is a skilled horseman, having sent out the winners of 800 races,
including 17 at Group 1 level, during a glittering career as a trainer. He trained in France for 14 years, and is consequently bilingual and knows the French racing scene insideout, and he later ran a stable in Hong Kong for 12 years, meaning he has a firm grasp on the all-important Asian market. He is even based in Kent these days: the ideal location for commuting to Deauville when needed but also easy access to the major London airports for international trips. “It’s fortunate that my wife’s family lives there,” laughs Gibson. “I can get to Deauville in four hours, whereas Yorkshire takes me five. The only thing is, my parents and family still live in Northumberland, and that often ends up being a six-hour road trip.” Explaining how his new role at Arqana came about, he says: “It all started with a conversation with Olivier Delloye [company president] and Freddy Powell [CEO]. We had an open, friendly chat about what Arqana needed to do to continue to thrive, and Olivier said he wanted to put an even greater emphasis on client service. “Arqana is incredibly forward-thinking, never resting on its laurels, and Olivier and Freddy hardly ever sit down – they’re constantly thinking of exciting new ideas.
‘‘
“Like all sales companies, the main objective is maintaining and expanding our buyers’ and vendors’ lists. I’m lucky enough to have made quite a lot of contacts over my professional life, and I know the vast majority of the major breeders and international buyers, so I can help that happen. It’s a case of getting in touch with them and making sure they have the best possible experience at Arqana.” Gibson has spent the first few months of his employment at Arqana liaising with the company’s international agents to find out the key dates in each jurisdiction’s racing and breeding calendar, so that he can be there to spread the word about Deauville sales. He is speaking for this interview on the phone from Copenhagen, as he is in town for the Danish Derby at Klampenborg racecourse. Is he living out of a suitcase, then? “I’m sure there will be quite a bit of that but, funnily enough, the thing I’ve really enjoyed in the last few weeks is going racing a lot more in Britain,” he says. “Believe it or not, I was at Sandown the other day and it was my first ever visit there. “The thing is, I arrived in the Chantilly lads’ hostel when I was 20, and then I lived in a village in the Loire Valley working for Henri-Alex Pantall. Then I went to Pascal Bary and on to become pupil assistant
ARQANA AUGUST IS WHERE FRENCH BREEDERS SELL THEIR BEST STOCK. IT HAS WORKED WELL FOR ARQANA IN ITS 20 YEARS OF EXISTENCE BUT IT WAS ALSO THE CASE EVEN BEFORE THEN

trainer to Bill Mott in America. In fact, I was with Bill when he took Cigar to Nad Al Sheba for the first-ever Dubai World Cup. “I set up as a trainer in France in 1997 and went straight from there to Hong Kong, where I stayed until I retired in 2023. So I’ve missed out on a lot of British racing over the years. “I’ve just recently spent a very enjoyable three days at Glorious Goodwood. Don’t tell Olivier and Freddy, but work isn’t supposed to be this enjoyable!” Gibson’s message to potential buyers at this summer’s racing festivals has been a pretty straightforward one. “It’s a simple principle,” he says. “Arqana August is where French breeders sell their best stock. It has worked well for Arqana in its 20 years of existence but it was also the case even before then. I had a nice lunch with Eric Hoyeau the other day, and he was giving me the fascinating full history of the Agence Francaise days. “It’s been an even easier message to get across this year as we can puff out our chests and congratulate Pierre Talvard and Henri Bozo for producing the two bestperforming middle-distance three-year-olds in Constitution River and Diamond Necklace. “In my opinion, at least, nothing matches Normandy breeding. It’s just fantastic land.” Gibson admits with a wry smile that Arqana August “is not exactly a hard sell”. He continues: “What I find particularly reassuring about the French industry at the moment is that there’s a multitude of studs producing Arc winners, Classic winners and Group 1 winners – not only here in Europe but also on the international scene. “For many years Lady O’Reilly’s stud was consistently the leading yearling vendor in Deauville, thanks to all the great bloodlines she nurtured, but now we’re seeing a consistent flow of top-class horses emerging from a wider array of different sources. “What’s also changed in the last 20 years is that those French breeders have become much more commercial in their focus – when I first came over here there were many, many more French ownerbreeders. That of course means that more of the cream of the yearling crop is coming on the market each year than ever before.” French breeders provide the bulk of the Arqana August catalogue but overseas studs have always taken select drafts to Deauville in the summer too. For example, Ballylinch Stud sold this season’s Falmouth Stakes and Prix Rothschild heroine Blue Bolt to Juddmonte for €400,000 at the auction, and Camas Park Stud
sold last year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf winner Balantina to Avenue Bloodstock, Parkland and Bawnmore for €100,000 there. “Arqana have been very clever in building close ties with consignors in Ireland and the UK and blending some of their top lots in with the French bluebloods,” says Gibson. “They’ve got many loyal clients in those countries who are happy to bring their best stock who fit into the August Sale format. Hopefully, we can attract even more now.”
A
MERICAN buyers, who have given a significant boost to yearling sales across western Europe in the last five years, are among Gibson’s primary targets for growth. “You don’t need to be a rocket scientist to realise that America remains the equine health hub of the world,” he says. “Fortunately, there’s a long, rich history of US owners buying horses in Deauville to be trained in France or to take home. Arqana August graduates have achieved multiple Grade 1 successes in that country. “Amy Lanigan, our agent in the US, has been at the heart of
assembling a vibrant buying bench from America and, speaking at the end of July, the flight from Saratoga to Deauville for the Arqana August Yearling Sale is already 80 per cent full. “There are plenty of other markets we’re looking to develop too. My priority in my first few weeks with Arqana has been finding out how it functions so successfully. But I know there are exciting plans already put in place by Olivier, Freddy and Ludovic [Cornuel].” Gibson will be at Deauville this month to welcome visitors to Arqana August and to make sure buyers are being well looked after. “I know this might sound corny but I do feel that buying any horse is a journey,” he says. “And no two journeys are the same. As we all know, there are many ups and downs in this game. I just hope that I’ll be able to play a small part in someone’s journey in buying a successful racehorse at Arqana.” One last thing, while we’ve got Gibson here. A Summer Yearling Sale supplement is hardly the time or the place to ask this, but it’s too good an opportunity to turn down. What does he make of Doctor Dino, the horse he sent
out to win the Man O’War Stakes and back-to-back renewals of the Hong Kong Vase, becoming the most indemand jumps stallion in Europe on the back of siring 14 Grade 1 winners including the likes of Sharjah, State Man, La Bague Au Roi, Docteur De Ballon and Sceau Royal? “He was so sound and genuine, and such a good physical that I’m not shocked at all that he’s excelled at stud,” says Gibson. “The only thing that did surprise me about his stallion career is that he didn’t have more top Flat performers. “Henri Devin trained some very good fillies by him for his family, who stand him at Haras du Mesnil – the likes of Golden Legend, Physiocrate and Villa Rosa – and it would have been interesting to see what he could do if he’d been given more chances like that. “But I’m incredibly proud of what he’s achieved as a jumps sire. I was lucky to be invited to Willie Mullins’ stables last year and it was great seeing topclass Doctor Dinos here, there and everywhere. He’s a credit to his former owners, and also to Haras du Mesnil, who have done such a wonderful job with him.” Doctor Dino isn’t that irrelevant to this supplement really. He was bought as a yearling in Deauville, 23 years ago this August.

Summer Yearlings Goffs UK SARA FARNSWORTH
Sun Goddess the latest to showcase sale’s track record with top juveniles Sun Goddess
Tokaido
2yo b g Ubettabelieveit Dora’s Sister (Dark Angel) Tokaido has established himself as one of the star juveniles of 2026 so far, not looking back since finishing second on his debut for Amy Murphy in France with four consecutive victories. The last three have all come in blacktype company, headed by Group wins in the Prix du Bois at Deauville and the Prix Robert Papin at Chantilly. A son of Mickley Stud’s Ubettabelieveit and the first black-type winner or performer out of Dark Angel mare Dora’s Sister, the gelding was bought by Matt Coleman and Murphy for £58,000 at last year’s sale.He looks set to compete in Britain this summer, as he cannot run in the Prix Morny due to being a gelding, but a step up to toptier company looks assured at some stage.

multiple Group 1 victories for Ballydoyle and Coolmore. Sukanya is one of 19 individual Group winners for her sire and exemplifies the talented progeny he consistently produces.
Goffs UK Doncaster Premier Yearling Sale The graduates 2yo b f Sioux Nation - Etoile Bleu (Starspangledbanner) The Doncaster Premier Yearling Sale’s reputation as a source of high-class juveniles is well-established and Sun Goddess is another Groupwinning two-year-old to emerge from the sale. Bought by Avenue Bloodstock on behalf of MV Magnier for £120,000 last year, she has earned her keep with two wins and two placings from four starts. She was a dead-heating, close-up second to smart stablemate Carry The Flag on her debut at Naas in May and went one better next time with an effortless five-length score at the Curragh. She was a length second to another exciting prospect in Libertango in the Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot before landing her own Group-race success in the Airlie Stud Stakes back at the Curragh. She supplemented that win with victory against the colts in the Phoenix Stakes, emulating her sire who captured the Group 1 in 2017. The hugely talented filly looks to have plenty more to offer this campaign and next.
Sukanya: talented performer passed through the ring at Doncaster (below)
Lush Lips
Sun Goddess: winner of the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes
Power Blue
3yo c Space Blues - Visions (Worthadd) A likeable and tough colt for the Amo Racing team, Power Blue overcame subsequent 1,000 Guineas heroine True Love when landing last year’s Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh. The son of Space Blues had run five times before that breakthrough, winning on his debut at the Curragh that March and running well in black-type contests, including when second in the Marble Hill Stakes. He finished second to subsequent Prix Jean Prat victor Thesecretadversary in a Leopardstown Group 3 on his seasonal reappearance in April and ran well in the Irish Guineas and St James’s Palace Stakes, with perhaps the suggestion that seven furlongs is more his bag. That preference duly came to fruition when the £44,000 Premier Sale graduate landed the Minstrel Stakes back at the Curragh, pulling a comfortable length and a half clear of stalwart Big Gossey in the process.
Sukanya
3yo g f Havana Grey - Shiba (Rail Link) Sukanya has been mixing it with the best in two seasons, her highlight coming in this year’s Fred Darling Stakes, defeating subsequent Coronation runner-up Touleen by three-quarters of a length. A £55,000 purchase by Opulence Thoroughbreds and Jack Channon, she won at Newbury on her debut at two last June and then ran well to finish fourth to Precise in the Prestige Stakes at Goodwood. She followed up with another good run when second to Diamond Necklace in the Ingabelle Stakes at Leopardstown. Those winners have, of course, gone on to
4yo b f Ten Sovereigns Lamyaa (Arcano) A multiple stakes winner with earnings of more than £800,000, Lush Lips has provided quite the return on her initial sales price of £82,000 at Doncaster in 2023. The daughter of the now Turkey-based Ten Sovereigns failed to win in three starts for Donnacha O’Brien but soon found her footing at Brendan Walsh’s yard in the States. She landed the Listed Tepin Stakes at Churchill Downs last June before finishing second in the Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks that August. She soon entered the Grade 1 winner’s enclosure with a length-and-a-quarter victory in the Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup in October before following up in the Grade 2 Mrs Revere Stakes the following month. Earlier in November, she had been sold to Dixiana Farm for $3.7 million at the Keeneland November Sale, and she carried her new owner’s silks to further Graded success in February’s Grade 3 Honey Fox Stakes at Gulfstream Park.
Grand Son Of Dark
3yo b c Dark Angel - Chica Bonita (Lope De Vega) A Listed winner as a two-yearold who has gone on to Classic success this term in the Premio Parioli (Italian 2,000 Guineas), Grand Son Of Dark has proved excellent value for his £52,000 purchase money at the 2024 Premier Sale. The son of Dark Angel ran out a comfortable winner of the Premio Bimbi at San Siro last June and has developed into a smart three-year-old, winning the Italian Classic by three and a half lengths before finishing a neck second to Venetian Prince in the Group 2 Italian Derby. Grand Son Of Dark also ran a fine race when second to the Guineas-placed Distant Storm in the Prix Daphnis at Deauville and he should be adding to his Group tally again before long. Kitty Trice

Summer Yearlings Goffs UK In the sales ring at Goffs UK, where David Redvers (below) has great hopes
David Redvers talks to Tom Peacock as Tweenhills return as a major force with a Kingman colt to lead the way
T
THEY’RE THE MAGIC NUMBERS
running for breeder of the year at the TBA awards. “The farm is working really well, the staff are fantastic and we’ve got some beautiful stock to sell, so so far it’s going swimmingly.” At this year’s Premier Sale, Tweenhills will offer seven yearlings, headed by lot 324, the only representative of Juddmonte’s leading light Kingman in the catalogue. He’s the first foal out of Roman Mist, a well-travelled mare by Holy Roman Emperor who scooped several Listed prizes in Britain and reached Group 3 level on one of her final starts for Archie Watson in the Grosser Preis der Landeshauptstadt Dresden in Germany. “We wanted to send a horse to the sale that might really ring the bell,” Redvers said. “We were lucky in that we managed to sell a sale-topper at Newmarket the year before last [a 1,000,000gns Kameko colt at Tattersalls Book 2] and we want to keep that going. “I think he’s the
epitome of a top-class, beautifully-bred yearling that could go anywhere and he’s by a sensational stallion out of a multiple stakes-winning, very tough and genuine racemare.” Explaining the strategy, Redvers continued: “We’re selling him for David Howden, who bred him and has a policy that he’s adopted that he wants to sell the colts and race the fillies, so that’s the reason he’s in the sale.
“We thought if we were going to take him somewhere, we’d take him somewhere where he’s the standout and I believe he will be that. “We know what works at Doncaster, which is a hardknocking two-year-old type, but equally we’ve seen what sells well there and that can often be something which has that bit more size, scope and quality than your normal jump and run two-year-old. “I think we’ve got a few that fit the two-year-old bill as well and I’m looking forward to seeing how they match up against the others.” Further obvious individuals in the draft include a Showcasing son of Wren’s Breath (416), an admirable Elzaam mare who is blind in one eye and won the Listed Sweet Mimosa Stakes for Howden and her breeder, Peter Molony. “She’s another young stakes-winning mare and the colt is by a proven sire of Royal Ascot and top-class twoyear-olds,” Redvers said.
“He’s absolutely the perfect shape of a proper Donny twoyear-old; if you were to draw a diagram of what a Donny yearling should look like, this is it.” “I’m also very sweet on a Pinatubo filly [386] that we’re selling for Lordship Stud. She’s from their wonderful Swiss family and Pinatubo fillies have been ringing every bell this year. “This one is all quality, another one who would fit in any sale ring through the year.”
L
OOKING through the catalogue, there are one or two others to note, including a colt from the first crop of Haras de Bonneval’s Erevann, who was picked up for 30,000gns by Tweenhills’ longstanding bloodstock manager Hannah Wall at last year’s Tattersalls December Foal Sale. Redvers said: “We’ve got a lovely Erevann colt [133]. He’s actually a pinhook, Hannah bought him at Newmarket for her Redwall syndicate. “He’s a beautiful horse with a magic action and loads of style. I think Erevann is a firstseason sire who is going to be well received, he’s from a sireline that just keeps delivering, and this would be as nice a physical as you’ll find.” The operation will also offer a colt by another stallion represented by his first
yearlings, Rathbarry’s son of Acclamation, Bouttemont. The youngster will be making his second appearance in a sales ring, having been bought for 20,000gns from the Tinnakill House draft at the Tattersalls December Mares Sale last November. “We’ve got a very smart Bouttemont colt [196] that we’re selling for Emma Palmer, and plenty of lovely other horses coming up.” Doncaster is not the only place where the Tweenhills caravan will be rolling up to. Select drafts will be sent to Arqana as well as to Tattersalls. The likely highlight for the end of the trail will be an October Book 1 Frankel colt out of the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint queen Caravel, owned in a partnership between Sheikh Fahad and John Stewart’s Resolute Racing. An April-born roan/grey individual, he is only in the early stage of yearling preparation. “Caravel was the best sprinter in the world and gave us some great days,” Redvers said. “This is a proper marquee colt to take and we’re very excited to get him.” That moment, though, is all the way ahead in mid-autumn and in this heady period, it’s one step at a time for Redvers. “We want to start the season with a bang and I think we’ve got the selection that should do that,” he said.
That’s how much his highest-priced foal made, making half a million reasons for you to look at the first yearlings by the Champion 2YO. Go to where the money is.
That’s what Timeform rated him after he beat the winners of 19 G1s in that Queen Anne. Not just by Frankel – he’s the highest-rated miler by Frankel.
TRIPLE TIME
‘We want to start the season with a bang’
That’s how many mile G1 races he won, from two to four. By Dubawi, and an outstanding winner of both a Guineas and a Lockinge – just like Night Of Thunder.

MODERN GAMES
WEENHILLS’ relatively recent formal return to consigning is set to have the farm’s name in lights again this year and it could well be as early as the forthcoming Goffs Premier Yearling Sale. David Redvers’ Gloucestershire operation had not sold under its own name in any great way for more than a decade. An enduring partnership with Sheikh Fahad Al Thani’s Qatar Racing had meant the team was far busier on the other side of an auction, acquiring much of the stock that would later contribute in an incredible way, from the stallions such as Roaring Lion, Zoustar and Kameko, to highend fillies who became broodmares. Qatar Racing operates in a more streamlined way nowadays and the fruits of investment by a number of clients have diverted Tweenhills back into even more of a nursery of talent delivering the likes of New Century and Running Lion. While it would always sell some of its products with other agents and consignors, in order to avoid complications at sales time, it has been very much back as a brand for the last couple of years. The operation sold all eight of the yearlings it offered at Doncaster last year for total receipts of £348,000 and Redvers is enjoying the operation’s increased focus on selling its homebred stock. “Now that we’re not as active on the buying front at the moment and we’ve got some lovely stock that we’ve gathered round over the years, we’ve got a really important job of selling them well, and we’re enjoying it,” he said. “We had a good sale at Donny, had a good sale at Newmarket, it’s been successful and fun and rewarding for our clients and the team at home who put all the work in. “Most of these horses have been born and bred, or even conceived, on the farm, so we’ve had an amazing time over the last couple of years with the results on the track and from horses who have gone through the farm we’ve been short-listed two years

Ch c Sioux Nation - Mix And Mingle (Exceed And Excel) Consigned by Deerfield Farm Sioux Nation has enjoyed a fine campaign with his standout performers including Group 1-winning juvenile Sun Goddess, progressive fouryear-old Group 3 winner City Of Memphis and stakeswinning juvenile Velozee. His yearlings at the Somerville Sale include this colt out of the Group-winning Mix And Mingle, an Exceed And Excel sister to Double Or Bubble whose Group wins came in the Abernant Stakes at Newmarket and Supreme Stakes at Goodwood in 2022. Mix And Mingle has produced three winners from as many starters and there should be more to come from the immediate pedigree with a two-year-old filly by Sea The Moon in training. The leading names further down the page include King Edward VII Stakes scorer and St Leger runner-up High Accolade and Group 3 winner Caught U Looking, later a 1.8 million guineas Tattersalls December Mares Sale graduate.
*2024 was a two-day sale
Celeron a bargain buy The consistent sort then gained a black-type win of his own when landing the Solario Stakes at Sandown, showing his customary tenacity to battle back when headed in a thrilling finish. He then finished a valiant sixth in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere on his final start for Cox before selling to leading Qatari trainer Jassim Mohammed Ghazali for 260,000gns at last year’s Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale.
Tattersalls Somerville Sale The graduates A Bit Of Spirit
3yo b c Palace Pier Tanaaghom (Dubawi) A smart juvenile performer for Clive Cox when landing last year’s Solario Stakes, A Bit Of Spirit is one of Palace Pier’s four individual Group winners and he showed consistent form throughout a busy campaign. The 75,000gns Somerville graduate began with his gritty debut score at Newbury that June and stepped forward to register a near-four-length success at Salisbury a month later. He ran with plenty of credit when a neck second in the Pat Eddery Stakes at Ascot and then when second again to fellow Palace Pier colt Morris Dancer in the Stonehenge Stakes back at Salisbury.
Celeron
2yo b c Mohaather - Fataliste (Siyouni) A recent emphatic winner of the Railway Stakes at the Curragh, Celeron has proved quite the bargain considering he cost Antonio Da Silva just 20,000gns at the sale last year. The Mohaather colt ran out a two-length winner on his debut at the Curragh last month, before bouncing back
El Nasseeb
from his run at Royal Ascot when claiming some notable scalps in the Railway Stakes. He strode at least three lengths clear of rivals including Ballydoyle pair Confucius – a 1.7 million guineas Book 1 purchase and a No Nay Never son of Cheveley Park winner Millisle – and Carry The Flag. He holds entries for a number of Group races for the remainder of the campaign.
5yo ch h Profitable - Jafetica (New Approach) This Profitable entire has been going great guns in the UAE and he enjoyed a banner campaign earlier this year with three black-type wins for trainer Musabbeh Al Mheiri. A 55,000gns Somerville Sale graduate in 2022, he has earned a tidy profit on that
In the ring at Park Paddocks, where the Somerville Sale takes place on September 2
with earnings of just over £400,000, as a result of his Group victories in the Dubawi Stakes and Mahab Al Shimaal at Meydan over the winter. He opened his stakes account with a clear-cut win in the Listed Al Garhoud Sprint at Meydan in December and there is no reason to think that he cannot add to his CV in the next Meydan campaign.

Lot 45
Bay c Mehmas - Naqrah (Haatef) Tally-Ho Stud It goes without saying that any Tally-Ho Stud draft has to be closely examined and this colt by its flagship sire Mehmas has the profile to make an impact. The bay is out of the Haatef mare Naqrah, herself unraced but the dam of a Grade 1 winner in American Oaks scorer Lady Prancealot. The daughter of Sir Prancealot had landed two Grade 3 wins before that career highlight, while she was also third in the Del Mar Oaks and Rodeo Drive Stakes. She rounded off her career with a valiant fourth to Audarya in the 2020 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf at Keeneland before selling to Shadai Farm for $1.6 million at the Fasig-Tipton November Sale just two days later. There is plenty of quality further down the page, with fellow US Grade 1 winners Almanaar and Brave Raj also featuring.
Lot 89
Ch c Bayside Boy - Rhigolter Rose (Leroidesanimaux) Rathbarry Stud Bayside Boy has arguably been the first-season sire sensation this year. There hardly seems to be a day that goes by
without the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes winner supplying another smart prospect and he has also registered two stakes winners on the board already. As such, it is highly likely his second crop of yearlings will be in strong demand at the sales. This Rathbarry Stud colt hails from a very current family as under the third dam is Zero Gravity, who produced recent King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner Kalpana, also a winner of the last two British Champions Fillies and Mares Stakes. This yearling is a halfbrother to three winners, while their dam is a winning halfsister to two black-type performers and from an incredibly strong Juddmonte family. Aside from Zero Gravity and Kalpana, the page also includes Grand Prix de Paris victor Zambezi Sun and dual 2025 Group scorer Better Together.
Lot 193
Gr f Dark Angel - Awaayed (Sea The Stars) Hillwood Stud A daughter of Yeomanstown stalwart Dark Angel from a beautifully nurtured Ballylinch family, this yearling has plenty of long-term residual value to go with her prospective racing abilities.
The grey is out of Awaayed, a daughter of prolific broodmare sire Sea The Stars and in turn a granddaughter of Group 3 winner and Oaks third High Heeled. That mare is the dam of stakes scorer Pabouche and the second dam of Falmouth Stakes and Belmont Oaks victress Cinderella’s Dream. Underneath the third dam, US Grade 2 scorer Uncharted Haven, is Irish 1,000 Guineas winner Just The Judge, the dam of Listed winner Nash Nasha and second dam of 2026 1,000 Guineas third Venetian Lace. Other notable performers in the family include Champagne Stakes scorer Iberian and Italian Group 2 winner Aloa.
Lot 252
Gr c Havana Grey Exceptional (Dutch Art) Houghton Bloodstock A Havana Grey colt from a high-class Cheveley Park Stud family, it would be no surprise if Houghton Bloodstock’s youngster proved a popular offering at Park Paddocks. The grey is out of the Listedwinning Dutch Art mare Exceptional, a half-sister to fellow stakes scorer Don’t Touch. The pair are out of the winning Expressive, a Falbrav half-sister to Group 2 scorer Chic and Matron Stakes
winner Echelon, dam of fellow Group 1 star Integral. The trio are out of Coronation Stakes victress and 1,000 Guineas third Exclusive, while the further family includes 2,000 Guineas hero Entrepreneur and Listed scorer and Oaks runner-up Dance A Dream.
Lot 281
B c Study Of Man - Isango (Dansili) Taroka Stud A colt bred on the same cross as this year’s King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner Kalpana, this yearling has a pedigree which includes a number of Classic and/or Group 1 winners. Out of the Anthony Oppenheimer-bred Dansili mare Isango, the bay’s immediate family includes last year’s ill-fated 2,000 Guineas victor Ruling Court, as well as Racing Post Trophy runner-up Johann Strauss. Notable performers under the third dam, Group 2 scorer and Coronation Stakes runnerup Inchmurrin, include St Leger hero Harbour Law, champion older horse Poet’s Word, Acomb Stakes winner and multiple Group 1-placed The Lion In Winter, and Group scorer and Irish Oaks runnerup Venus De Milo, dam of Cleveland and Amelia Earhart. BBAG Yearling Sale The graduates Chiefland
3yo b c Study Of ManCasuarina (Sea The Moon) It isn’t just the cream of the German crop that is available at BBAG. Hetty Spencer offered this Irish-bred son of Lanwades Stud sire Study Of Man on behalf of County Kilkenny breeder Stephen Lanigan O’Keeffe, and Liberty Racing bought him for €50,000. Chiefland, as he was named, won his maiden during Grosse Woche at Baden-Baden last year and scored in the Listed Derby Trial at Dusseldorf this spring, before finishing a gallant second in the Deutsches Derby.
Dardanos
3yo b c Soldier HollowDelegation (Mount Nelson) This year’s big-priced Deutsches Derby hero was
bought for just €10,000 by his joint-owner Friedrich von Lenthe, who knew the pedigree well having raced the colt’s black-type-winning older half-brothers De La Soul and Delgardo. Dardanos was consigned to Baden-Baden by Gestut Auenquelle on behalf of breeder Barbara Holubova, who bred him out of her winning Mount Nelson mare Delegation.
Gaelic Warrior
8yo g Maxios-Game Of Legs (Hernando) The Niarchos-bred son of Maxios might be a steeplechaser but he is a fine advertisement for the classy, tough and durable horses available at small prices in Baden-Baden. Bought by Pierre Boulard for
a mere €9,000 from the Gestut Fahrhof draft in 2019, he has now won seven Grade 1 races and secured more than £1.25 million in prize-money.
Gostam
3yo b c Saxon Warrior-Goiania (Oasis Dream) The son of Saxon Warrior was top of the class in Germany at two, winning both of the country’s premier juvenile prizes by wide margins, and he has won the Group 2 Bavarian Classic, before finishing a fine eighth in the Prix du Jockey Club at three this year. The colt flopped in the Deutsches Derby but can be forgiven as the ground was bottomless. He was bought from the consignment of breeder Gestut Fahrhof, by Holger Faust on behalf of Darius Racing for €58,000.

Martin Stevens finds out how a century-old German stud keeps delivering
G
ESTUT EBBESLOH might be celebrating its 100th anniversary this year but it is remarkably hale and hearty in its old age, thanks to it having been well looked after by three generations of present owner Ingeborg von Schubert’s family. The stud in western Germany has celebrated its big birthday by breeding Group 3 winners Global Health and Santa Catarina, and those results have been no flash in the pan. It has also reared two of the last four fillies who were successful in the prestigious Preis der Diana – Muskoka, a BBAG graduate, in 2023 and Nicoreni, who carried home silks, in 2025. Giving a potted history of the operation, Von Schubert says: “My paternal grandfather [Richard Kaselowsky] bought a farm on around 100 hectares in Ebbesloh near Bielefeld – a very small area, not quite a village, there isn’t even a church there – in 1926. “He started breeding thoroughbreds a couple of years later and he was very passionate about it. He took great pride in developing distinctive bloodlines and enjoyed tremendous success with them throughout the 1930s. He bred and raced
‘EACH GENERATION THAT HAS RUN GESTUT EBBESLOH HAD BRED AND RACED A WINNER OF THE OAKS’
Adlerfee, the winner of the Preis der Diana in 1938, but he and his wife died in the war. “My father [also Richard Kaselowsky] took over the stud after the war. Feed for the horses was still strictly rationed and the German racing authorities were very conservative about international bloodlines, so for a long time he could only breed from German stallions and mares. “He eventually also had a lot of success. He bought a stallion called Mangon who sired only three crops as he injured himself in his box and died young. Despite that, Mangon ended up producing two Deutsches Derby winners [Alarich in 1960 and Baalim in 1961]. “He also bred and raced a Preis der Diana winner in Arkona in 1993. His health declined in the mid-1990s, leading to my husband Bernhard and I taking on the stud, and he died in 2002.” Von Schubert chairs the board of the family company Gundlach, which was once a major publisher – and still owns German racing newspaper Sport-Welt since it bought it in the early 2000s to stop it going under – but is now more involved in packaging. She has put her own mark on Gestut Ebbesloh in her 30 years at the helm.
“Bernhard and I were keen to introduce some international stallions to reinvigorate a few of our old German female lines, while still placing an emphasis on staying potential,” she says. “Nowadays we have around ten mares, who represent that blend of international and domestic blood, and they all receive the utmost professional care in the sense of rearing, nutrition, sales preparation and handling. We also board a few mares, but only for friends and family, as we don’t want to overstock our paddocks. “In recent times we’ve produced 20 black-type horses with those sorts of numbers, including four Group 1 winners – Girolamo and Empoli in the Preis von Europa and Muskoka and Nicoreni in the Oaks. I don’t think that’s a bad record for a little stud like ours.” Nicoreni, a daughter of former Ebbesloh stallion resident Brametot and the Listed-winning Big Shuffle mare Nouvelle Neige, was an especially important horse for Von Schubert. “It was emotional when she won the Preis der Diana,” she says. “It meant that each generation that has run Gestut Ebbesloh had bred and raced a winner of the Oaks. “I had been quite ill in the
‘‘
days leading up to the race, and so I wasn’t sure whether I’d be able to go to Dusseldorf to cheer her on in the race, but I did in the end, and I’m so glad I did as it was a great day: one I’ll never forget.” Nicoreni was subsequently sold privately to Teruya Yoshida, who along with his brothers has been a keen collector of Preis der Diana winners over the years. Gestut Ebbesloh’s boxes are still populated by mares with impeccable credentials for producing talented athletes, though – including, much to Von Schubert’s delight, one whose tail-female line goes all the way back to her grandfather’s time.
T
HAT is Arizona Lakes, a winning daughter of Adlerflug out of Alte Rose, a smart Monsun mare whose eighth dam was a half-sister to the stud’s first Oaks heroine Adlerfee. Arizona Lakes’ yearling filly by Alson is, unsurprisingly, being retained by Gestut Ebbesloh but the farm is still offering five lots at BBAG next month who all make plenty of appeal on paper. The standout is perhaps the Sea The Stars filly out of the Group 3-winning Soldier Hollow mare Sconset, who is
the dam of this year’s Schwarzgold-Rennen scorer Santa Catarina (lot 74). “She is bred on a foal share, as you might imagine for a little breeder like us,” says Von Schubert. “Santa Catarina was very impressive when she won the Schwarzgold-Rennen, a key trial for the Preis der Diana, in the spring but unfortunately she didn’t run so well in the big race. However, it was an exceptionally hot day, around 31 degrees, and fillies can be difficult in those temperatures. “She’s from a very good damline. We bought her granddam Sine Tempore, a daughter of Monsun, from Gestut Schlenderhan, although it isn’t the famous Schlenderhan ‘S’ family of Schwarzgold, it is an old Aga Khan Studs dynasty.” Lot 154 from Gestut Ebbesloh is a brother to its other homebred Group winner this year, Global Health, also being by Farhh and out of the placed Authorized mare Galette. Global Health was owned by Ebbesloh itself until this June but the five-year-old was claimed out of a Longchamp race by his new trainer Fabian Xaver Weissmeier, who sent him out to win the Grosser Hansa-Preis at Hamburg in early July. “We had a bit of bad luck as
Global Health was our Deutsches Derby prospect in 2024 but two weeks before the race he had an abscess in his hoof, so he couldn’t run,” says Von Schubert. “It took a long time for him to come back to form. “We sold him before he won a big race but we were very happy to celebrate his success with his very nice group of new owners. “This is one of our best families. Galette’s third dam Golden Time, a Listed-placed daughter of Surumu, was purchased in the 1990s and became an excellent producer for us. She bred Girolamo as well as the stakes winners Gereon, Goose Bay and Grantsville.” Lot 81 from Gestut Ebbesloh is a Cracksman halfsister to Listed winner Winnyzja and Group 3-placed Waladares out of Wierland, a winning relation to Weracruz, another filly by Cracksman who finished third against colts in the Deutsches Derby for Ebbesloh. “I love the mother Wierland,” says Von Schubert. “Her first foal was a filly called Waldeza who didn’t gain black type but won €100,000 as a two-year-old in auction races. Her second foal, Winnyzja, won the Diana-Trial at Mulheim and was in the same Oaks as Nicoreni. She’s by

Sottsass, a stallion I admire, so I was keen to bring her back for breeding as he has now been exported to Japan. “Wierland’s third foal Waladares was our Derby hope for this year but, sadly, he was ruled out on the Friday before the race as he had a swollen hind leg. He is due to run in a Listed race over a shorter distance than the Derby, which should suit him better. “I understand that Cracksman is now National Hunt orientated in Britain but I like him for putting in stamina and he’s worked with his family before. We don’t breed sprinters, nor even milers really – sometimes, maybe, but not very often. I used to be convinced that you couldn’t send staying mares to fast sires, but that turned out not to be true and now I do it.” Gestut Ebbesloh is selling another well-related filly in the Sea The Moon half-sister to the multiple Group-placed Mehmas colt Dhitjari out of Democracy, a Group 3-placed half-sister to Gran Premio di Milano winner and Group 1 place-getter Durance (149). “Sea The Moon is an important horse in German breeding,” says Von Schubert. “He was a very convincing Derby winner who produces a lot of good horses and we’ve used him a lot at Ebbesloh.
“Dhitjari wasn’t standing correctly when we showed him as a yearling at BBAG and so he didn’t sell, but he finished second in the ZukunftsRennen and third in the German 2,000 Guineas for us. “Durance was a good horse for us too, before we sold her. I’m sad that she hasn’t worked out so well as a broodmare yet, but hopefully she can do better in time.”
G
ESTUT EBBESLOH’S other offering at this year’s BBAG Yearling Sale was bred by the stud manager Franziska Altewille-Jacobs. It is notable as one of only two lots from the final crop of the late German champion sire Soldier Hollow in the catalogue (44). “I think he is either the last, or second last, foal of Soldier Hollow,” says Von Schubert. “Soldier Hollow was a very successful stallion in Germany and, importantly, is also respected abroad. “It’s funny, his sire In The Wings was not that successful in Britain but he had three stallion sons in Germany – Adlerflug and Mamool, as well as Soldier Hollow – and they all did well. “What I particularly liked about Soldier Hollow was that he was a very, very tough horse
over multiple seasons and that’s a trait I always look out for in sires.” Fantastic Moon, who retired to Gestut Ebbesloh last year, combines two of Von Schubert’s preferred traits. He is by Sea The Moon and he showed top-class form over three consecutive seasons, winning the Preis des Winterfavoriten at two, the Baden-Baden Derby Trial, Deutsches Derby and Prix Niel at three and the Grosser Preis der Badischen Wirtschaft and Grosser Preis von Baden at four. His first crop will feature in the 2027 BBAG Yearling Sale catalogue. “I admired Fantastic Moon’s owners Liberty Racing for wanting to keep him as a stallion in Germany, and so we were very happy to stand him at Ebbesloh,” says Von Schubert. “His foals look very nice. It’s just a shame there aren’t that many of them. Hardly any stallions in Germany cover large numbers of mares, so it is hard for them to make an impact. He has something like 30 foals this year and should have around 35 next season.” Here’s hoping Gestut Ebbesloh’s yearlings at BBAG and Fantastic Moon’s progeny get the stud’s next 100 years off to a good start.
