Barry is a great competitor but 700 wins is down to fate’s twists

L

AST Sunday Barry O’Neill reached another big milestone in his career when riding his 700th point-to-point winner on Some Man for David Christie in the Open at Ballindenisk.

Barry’s achievement reminded me of something I’ve often thought about in recent years: how fortunate riders such as Barry and Jamie Codd and I have been to experience the modern world of Irish point-topointing.

When I rode my first winner around 20 years ago an era had just come to an end with the retirement of Enda Bolger. He rode 413 point-topoint winners, breaking the record of 401 set by Willie Rooney during a career that lasted around 50 years.

Back then, Enda’s total seemed like something way out of the ordinary, and nothing will ever take away from what he achieved at a time when there was much less racing than nowadays. And we shouldn’t forget the likes of Tony Martin, John Berry and Tom Costello, who also put up big totals during Enda’s time.

But these days Enda finds himself in fifth place on the all-time riders’ table, almost 200 behind the fourth, the late John Thomas McNamara who broke the 600-winner mark before his career came to such a tragic end.

The fact is that just over 20 years ago everything changed.

Sometimes good things can come from a bad situation, and that’s what happened to the Irish point-to-point world after the foot-and-mouth outbreak in 2001. Because the normal season came to a premature end in the last week of February, an autumn campaign was introduced to make up for lost time.

The extended 2001/02 season was a great success. A lot of the credit for that is down to John Thomas McNamara and Davy Russell who fought out an amazing title battle all the way to the end at Ballingarry, when they shared the title with 56 wins. It was like Manchester City and Liverpool. The same year Mark Grant and I shared the novice riders’ title with 16 apiece.

Murphy, who started a few years before me, and Barry, who began a little later. We all had the good fortune to be around at the right time.

But far more important than what it did for us as riders, the new format of the point-to-point calendar changed the shape of Irish jump racing as a whole.

It allowed a younger generation of handlers the chance to operate a year-round business that made commercial sense.

As soon as one season ends and the early-developing youngsters are sold it’s back to the store sales and everything starts again with the

later-maturing four-year-olds getting their chance to show their worth in the autumn.

There has been change all around.

When I started, the talk was all about bumper horses making big money.

These days, point-to-points are the number one source of the talent of the future.

In his long association with Colin Bowe, Barry has been involved with many horses who went on to become top-class horses on the track.

He has been the dominant rider in recent seasons. Last year he made history by becoming the first rider to win all four regional titles. He is set to be crowned champion rider for the sixth season in a row and has many more left in him, with Rob James his most likely challenger in the immediate future.

Things didn’t go to plan at the beginning.

He could manage only third on the Colin Bowe-trained favourite Shiroccosmagicgem in the opening four-year-old mares’ maiden at Punchestown, won by the stable’s other runner Chosen Hero, ridden by James Kenny.

In the geldings’ maiden, Barry was aboard Waspy, no match for Matthew Flynn O’Connor’s Ittack Blue who won by a big margin under Brian Lawless.

In the end, it was an older horse, Alpha Male, who provided his only winner of the day, making up for his defeat in the Bishopscourt Cup at the festival by winning the confined hunt farmers’ race.

Barry must have thought it wasn’t going to be his day when he again rode the wrong one for the Bowe stable in the first division of the fouryear-old maiden at Ballindenisk. His mount was struggling from halfway while James Kenny was making all to win on Soldier Of Fortune gelding Ballabawn.

Things took a turn for the better when he rode Lunar Contact to win the second division for the Bowe team, and then he teamed up with Willie Murphy to take a mares’ maiden on Miss Mae West.

Winner number 700 came up the David Christie-trained gelding who is the season’s leading horse. This was Some Man’s sixth win of the campaign and a 19th in all for a stable that has so much to look forward to next season with top-class hunter chasers Winged Leader and Vaucelet.

We could have done with a bit more strength in depth with the hunter chasers this season so I was glad to see Enda Bolger’s Stand Up And Fight come back to form to win at Killarney on Monday for Aine O’Connor. He jumped well and he’ll get another chance at Listowel early next month.

TALENT SPOTTER Trainer Corrie Auchterlonie tells how her college club gets pupils into pointing

I

WORK as a full-time instructor at Cafre (College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise) in Fermanagh and we had a fantastic day at Largy last month with Boro Melody winning, which was my first winner as a handler.

I’m originally from Scotland and started off in racing with Lucinda Russell when I was 22, then spent some time in Ireland working for Joe Murphy and Mark Molloy before I moved out to Australia, where I was very lucky to work with Peter Moody during the whole Black Caviar fun times, which was very special.

I travelled to New Zealand and worked for Kevin Myers too, and I also rode a little myself in amateur races there before I came back via America and Canada.

I moved over to Fermanagh with my other half, who is a farrier, and he had enrolled in the college here to do an upskilling course for farriers.

By pure chance, when I had first moved over I worked for David Christie for a little while, then ended up getting a temporary job at the college, and that has now become permanent as an instructor.

It involves teaching a lot of the practical classes, with the pointto-pointing an extra-curricular racing club that we run. It is open to all the students on the courses which would vary from level two right up to Bachelor of Science degrees.

The racing club runs between 7am and 9am in the morning and it is open to anyone in the college who wants to see if racing is something that they want to give a go.

We can have students who

We have students who might not have been anywhere near a racehorse before might not have been anywhere near a racehorse before, and we have all the facilities and retired schoolmasters to start them off slowly before moving on to the gallops.

It works well for getting people involved in racing as it gives them the chance to progress to our racehorses, schooling them and riding fast work.

At the start of the year you could have up to 40 students who want to get involved, so I work it on a rota basis, and then as the year goes on that can drop off, but we would still have 25 involved by the end of this season.

I try as best I can to run it as a racing yard. We feed them, ride them, then the horses are used for lunging or bandaging or plaiting in all the different practical classes for the rest of the day.

Largy was just a fantastic day. I was joking with the two boys [Jordan Ratcliffe and Brian Barry] beforehand saying I would settle for a first and second – and we came close to it with Boro Melody winning and The Bolder Boy third.

It was pure chance that Brian got to ride Boro Melody in the first place. We try to use current or ex-students, and we had been using Anna McGuinness on him, but she had a fall in Portrush and couldn’t ride him later that

day. I went into the weigh tent and it just happened that Brian was standing there. He has been great on him ever since.

Jordan gave The Bolder Boy a great ride too and is a current student with us. He has just completed the second year of his Bachelor of Science degree and is going to be doing a semester at Michigan State University.

We don’t put any pressure on the riders. It’s the chance for them to make their mistakes. If it doesn’t work out, what odds? We’ll try again the next time and do something different, because it is important they learn to use their brains as much as their riding ability.

We are fortunate that we also attract a lot of girls who want to work in racing and the

racing club allows us to give them the opportunity to say to them, ‘You are a capable rider, here’s a chance. If you want to go riding in a point-to-point on safe horses where there’s no pressure, give it a bash and see how it goes.

‘You might find that you’re the next Rachael Blackmore or say I never want to do that again’, but either way it doesn’t matter, it’s about giving people a start.

Horse welfare is a big factor here at the college too and they have designed these new active turnouts that allow the horses to live outside. They have done a lot of research on behaviour patterns and decided to invest in building them.

The horses used to be stabled 24/7 with a bit of

turnout at the weekends, but we have made the change for all the animals to stay outside bar when the weather is terrible.

LOT of these active turnouts were designed on the continent.

There are a lot of different pathways for them: you might have sand, a bit of a stone area, a wood chip area, there are shelters and different feeding points throughout, so the horses can choose where they want to be, where they want to sleep and what surface they want to roll on.

There are sections they have to walk over to get down to feeding stations with drops in them, all encouraging them to move more in a mentally

stimulating environment.

They are turned out in groups of five to eight, mares and geldings together, and we try to do it as naturally as possible. I think it keeps the horses much healthier and their legs and airways have been good.

The results on the track this season have been brilliant and this has definitely been one of the factors in that. We are dealing with a lot of older horses who, joint-wise, you want to keep moving as much as possible.

It has been proven scientifically time and time again that standing in a stable for 23 hours a day is not good for a horse – for either their brain or their body. I have pushed to have them on ad-lib forage too and they have access to as much as they want to keep their stomachs right.

We have invested in a vibrating therapy floor, which I think has helped them too. It has just been a different approach this season and I think they are much happier, healthier horses and the results have shown that.

In the past there would have been problems with a couple of horses bleeding, and I don’t think we have had a single bleeder this season.

I’ve managed to drive the racing club a bit more this year to try to go to tracks where the college hasn’t had runners in a long time, such as Kirkistown, Taylorstown, Tyrella and down to Stradbally.

I thought we needed to push this forward a bit because it is a great way to tell people about Cafre.

The college offers a lot of opportunities for people, maybe they might want to get involved and go point-topointing at the weekend, or work with the broodmares we have here. There’s lots to do alongside doing a college course here.

Applications for courses are also still open, either directly through the website for level two or three courses, or through Ucas for the degree programmes.

Hannon in the driving seat in southern title race BARRY O’NEILL became the third rider in point-to-point history to reach the 700-winner mark after a treble at Ballindenisk on Sunday.

In joining Derek O’Connor and Jamie Codd in making it to the 700-w inner mark, the Wexford rider also secured his latest regional title on the same day as the eastern region drew to a close at Stradbally.

A comfortable cushion of nine winners over the sidelined

Jack Hendrick saw O’Neill win his local regional title for the sixth year in a row.

That wraps up all bar one of the regional championships, turning all the focus to the southern title race, which could run right to the final day if Sunday’s card at Ballindenisk is any guide to the remaining five fixtures.

James Hannon is just one winner in front of Chris O’Donovan, with Derek

O’Connor one further adrift in third. That Ballindenisk treble has also left O’Neill only four w i n n e r s b e h i n d Ha n n o n , leaving it all to play for before that title is settled at Tralee on Sunday, May 29.

David Christie and owner Ray Nicholas moved one step closer to winning the champion point-to-point horse title for a second time in the last three years when their Some Man became the first

horse to reach the six-winner mark this season.

The huge 650-kilometre round trip to Ballindenisk from Christie’s Derrylin base was rewarded with an easy victory 24 hours after their big title rival A Rated was beaten at Punchestown by Visioman.

Those weekend results leave Some Man with a more comfortable two-winner advantage over the chasing pack and his handler is leaving

nothing to chance as he has also entered Some Man again at Ballingarry this weekend.

Lalors’ Sunday special

The Lalor family were to the fore at both Sunday’s meetings.

At the same time as David Lalor was overseeing events at Stradbally in his role as the Laois Foxhounds’ point-to-point secretary, his brother Joe’s homebre d G one dair y was winning at Ballindenisk,

ridden by their cousin, the record-breaking Liz Lalor.

The Robin Des Pres mare is the second offspring of the star mare Clonbeale Vacation, who won five pointing races, culminating in her victory in the mares’ banks race at the now lost Athlacca course in 2012.

Coincidentally, Clonbeale Vacation was also ridden to success in the same Ballindenisk maiden 11 years earlier

Halsall saddles debut winner as Visioman lands surprise victory AFTER enjoying point-to-point success as an owner with last s e a s o n ’s m a i d e n w i n n e r s Chianti Classico and Ree Okka, Ben Halsall sent out his first winner as a handler when Vi s i o m a n w a s a s u r p r i s e winner of the day’s feature race, the Jacqueline McManus Solicitors novice riders’ open.

The nine-year-old, who had previously carried the colours of Halsall’s father Alan to five victories under rules when trained by Henry de Bromhead, took a notable step forward from his open debut at Oldcastle last month by beating this season’s four-time winner A Rated by a length under Troy Walsh.

“Troy gave him a fantastic ride; he’s a seriously good jockey,” Halsall said. “I’ll keep him on again, even if it’s not a novice riders’ race the next time. That’s my first winner and my second ever runner.

He’s the only horse I have in training and I’m delighted.”

That had been a rare defeat o n t h e c a r d f o r We x f o r d connections, with handlers from that county claiming the opening four races, a run of success initiated by the fivelength victory of Chosen Hero in the Sunnyhill Stud four-yearold mares’ maiden.

The well-bred Flemensfirth mare, who is out of a half-sister to the ill-fated three-time Grade 1 winner Burton Port, had failed to find a buyer when offered as a foal.

However, she enhanced her value by vindicating the promise she had shown when beaten just over three lengths on her Dromahane debut a fortnight earlier by putting that experience to good use in accounting for the newcomer Theatrical Light.

That formed the opening leg of James Kenny’s double as he later teamed up with his father Liam’s Lock Out in division one of the Cavan Developments five- and six-year-old geldings’ maiden to continue an excellent spring for the Ballydarragh handler.

His select team of point-topointers added a fourth victory from their last 11 runners when

the Watar gelding, who had finished a staying-on fourth on his debut at Monksgrange, beat the Derek O’Connor-ridden favourite Hidalgo Des Bordes by five lengths.

Wexford yards were also responsible for the first five finishers in the Goffs UK Spring Sale four-year-old geldings’ maiden, a race which was also notable for producing yet another wide-margin winner in the age division this spring for the Matthew Flynn O’Connor team.

With stable jockey Brian Lawless in the saddle on Ittack Blue, the €30,000 store purchase bounded clear of the recent Dawstown third Waspy up the run-in to open his account at the first time of asking by 16 lengths.

produces more rides like the one he gave Captains Road in the second division of the fiveand six-year-old geldings’ maiden, it is a milestone he will soon reach.

The 28-year-old rider put the Doyen gelding’s experience to good use with a change of tactics which saw the €26,000 foal purchase become one of three winners on the card to make all the running in beating Henhouse by two lengths.

“I didn’t make enough use of him the last day,” Dunne said.

“I’m not sure whether it was t h e j o c k e y ’s f a u l t o r t h e

trainer’s instructions, but we changed tactics today.

“We jumped out and went a g o o d ga l l o p. He ju m p e d savage, quickened into the straight and had the race put to bed at the third-last. It was a good performance.”

UNITED HUNT AT BALLINDENISK SUNDAY

That’s Some Man: O’Neill joins elite 700-winner club BARRY O’NEILL dominated the meeting by partnering a three-timer to become only the third jockey to ride 700 pointto-point winners.

He reached the landmark in the Pipelife open on the David Christie-trained Some Man, the season’s leading horse, who never gave his supporters any concern in a slowly run race as he always travelled well close to the leaders.

The winning nine-year-old, who got off the mark for the campaign at Kirkistown in November, eased to the front with two fences remaining and was always in command with two lengths separating him from long-time leader Rose Of Coolbally.

“I’ve not trained that many horses with his speed. He has an electric turn of foot and the plan is to make him champion pointer,” Christie said of the Ray Nicholas-owned Some Man, who has now won ten p o i nt s i n a d d i t i o n t o t w o hunter chases.

handlers, with his middle success coming on the Willie Murphy-trained Miss Mae West in the second division of the Tattersalls NH five-yearold-and-upwards mares’ maiden.

Mi s s Ma e We s t, d e s p i t e pulling up on all four previous points starts, was bounced out at the head of affairs and developed a nice rhythm.

The daughter of Westerner, a half-sister to Henry de Bromhead’s Grade 1 Irish Arkle Novice chase winner An C a t h a o i r M o r, a s s e r t e d approaching the last to fend off the consistent Blooming Fortune by two and a half lengths in the colours of Kellistown, County Carlow-based owner Martin Byrne.

“We always thought that there was a day in her and she’s c o m i n g t o h e r s e l f n o w ,” Murphy said. “She could run again before the end of the season.”

Lunar Contact, who was an excellent third to Fortunate Soldier on his debut on soft ground at Oldcastle last month, made his way to the front after the second-last and held on well to deny the staying-on Isle Of Gold by a neck in the closest finish of the afternoon.

“He had a lovely first run on heavy ground [at Oldcastle] and the nicer ground here today brought out the best in him,” O’Neill said.

The Sea Moon-sired Lunar Contact is a €50,000 Goffs Land Rover sale graduate out of a sister to Grade 1 Cheltenham champion bumper winner Briar Hill.

The absent Bowe was responsible for two winners on the card as he was also on the mark with Ballabawn in the first division of this same contest.

Ballabawn, a son of Soldier Of Fortune who finished a respectable third on his only start behind Broughshane at Kirkistown in Februar y, benefited from a well-judged

frontrunning ride from James Kenny to beat Imperial Assassin by two and a half lengths.

“He had a nice first run in Kirkistown,” Kenny said. “He w a s f re s h e n e d u p a n d h e

showed here what was he was doing at home.”

Gonedairy, trained by Denis Prendergast, went one better than behind Bonne Derreen at Bartlemy the previous Sunday by landing the first division of the mares’ maiden.

The six-year-old, whose dam Clonbeale Vacation recorded the first of her points victories in a division of this same race in 2011, made her way to the front two out to beat Lady Violet and Liz Lalor.

Gonedairy’s breeder Joe Lalor, whose wife Hilary owns the winning daughter of Robin Des Pres.

There was another popular family success as Kilavorillabased owner-trainer Tommy Hurley sent out Community Rebel, who has finished third twice this season, to win the Johnson & Perrot and McCarthy Commercials Ltd confined maiden in the hands of his son Johnny Hurley.

Sean Doyle’s eight-year-old had proved too good for the subsequent dual British point winner Isaac Wonder over course and distance a month earlier and she was set a straightforward task to win the race for the second year in a row.

Golden Chance was the sole rival to line up in opposition, and once she was quickly pulled up approaching the home bend the Morozov mare was left to finish alone to land her seventh victory.

“No-one really wanted to go on early, and he has plenty of experience, so I went on in front and he was good,” Harney said. “He did it well and is in the Doncaster sale this week.”

Limerick handler William O’Doherty had his first success of the season when Milfordfourthree landed the Design Options older mares’ maiden.

The six-year-old was particularly unfortunate not to open her account three starts previously at Rathcannon early last month when stumbling badly after the last when leading.

Her supporters had no such concerns as Ray Barron guided her to a five-length defeat of the twice-placed Natural Look.

“Ground is key to her; she needs it good,” O’Doherty said.

“We’ll give her a break now and then run her over hurdles during the summer.”
