Open horses play a vital role in adding variety to our sport

HEALY RACING

AST weekend saw the successful reappearance of last season’s top two point-to-pointers. The champion mare, The Great Unknown, captured the first mares’ open of the season at Lisronagh and the champion pointer, Hearts And Spades, won the open at Damma House. On the same afternoon, the experienced What Path recorded his fourth point-topoint success in an open for novice riders at Rathcannon. For most of us involved as trainers or riders, the main focus is inevitably on the four-year-old and five-yearold maidens which provide the shop window for the best of our young horses. A lot of money, time and effort goes into the youngsters in the cycle that produces a huge amount of high-quality raw material for jump racing in Ireland and Britain. It is serious business and the stakes are high. But we have to remember this is a sport too, and one with a tradition we have inherited and need to look after.

Open horses must be valued The number of open horses on the scene is relatively small and we cannot afford to let these types become extinct. They add variety to race programmes, and give point-topoint followers familiarity with horses who turn up year after year. The industry also benefits from a pathway into the point-to-point sector for older chasers who may have lost their competitive edge on the track but are still sound and enthusiastic. Horses in this category often get a new lease of life in races where the pace may not be as searching as on the racecourse. In recent years Winged Leader has been a fabulous advertisement for the sport, winning a record 37 pointto-points for County Fermanagh trainer David Christie who has specialised in older horses and has a great knack of keeping them going season after season.

Love for prolific winners Prolific winners are not uncommon and are popular with racegoers. In the 2018-19 season there was a thrilling battle for the title of champion pointer that ended in a tie on the 13-winner mark between Kruzhlinin, who came back from a career on the track in Britain to

Hearts And Spades and Eoin Mahon win for Ian McCarthy at Damma House

become an outstanding open horse for Camilla Sharples and Gordon Elliott, and Longhouse Music, a mare who had only a brief spell on the track and was basically a careerlong pointer who won 20 of her 38 races in points. Sam Curling did a brilliant job with Longhouse Music. I rode her to half a dozen wins during her title-sharing season and remember when she beat a young Winged Leader, who was only half her age, at Portrush. Last season, I was thrilled to be associated with The Great Unknown (right), a Walk In The Park mare trained by Sam for his mother, Adelia Greer. We won seven out of eight together, and I enjoyed getting reacquainted with her at Lisronagh. She’s only a seven-year-old, and my first

impression was that she is better than ever. Eoin Mahon rode Hearts And Spades to six of his eight wins in points last season and was back in the saddle when Ian McCarthy reintroduced the seven-year-old Maxios gelding at Damma House. He led after the second-last and was challenged by Life In The Park before getting on top in the closing stages. Ian is planning to send him to Fairyhouse for a hunter chase next week and he should be sharper for this warm-up run. Last year he was so dominant in points that it was a little surprising he was beaten in a hunter chase at Cork and in the Bishopscourt Cup at the Punchestown Festival. I’m sure he won’t remain a maiden hunter chaser for long.

What Path knows the way What Path’s win in the novice riders’ open at Rathcannon gave young Jayden Chute a first win on only his second ride. Winning handler Gerry Mangan rode 115 winners in points and has had a long association with Tom Cooper’s Kerry stable. Gerry and his family members make up the Kingdom Red Syndicate. They enjoyed a Listowel festival win with Potters Pal, a young horse who started his career with three runs in points last year. Gerry has taken out a public licence and now has Potters Pal in his yard. What Path should pick up a hunter chase if he can reproduce the form of his second to Solitary Man at Killarney in May. The Enda Bolgertrained winner reflected that performance in a good light when beating Perceval Legallois in July’s Midlands National at Kilbeggan. Jigsaw Juke, who won at Damma House under Brian Dunleavy, is

another horse who could go down the hunter chase route later in the season. Owned and trained by Jim O’Neill, he is a lightly raced sevenyear-old who had jumping issues early in his career. He won a maiden at Lingstown last season and produced a good, tough performance in Sunday’s race, getting the better of a tussle with Sir Topham Hatt who won twice last season and already had a run under his belt. Finally, well done to Tessa Condon, a member of a well-known Cork racing family who rode her first pointto-point winner on the Aidan Fitzgerald-trained Chiefs Kingdom in an older horses’ maiden at Lisronagh. Tess won’t forget the last few weeks of October 2026 in a hurry. She had her first winner on the track when riding the Philip Fentontrained Lake Chad to a 25-1 win in a handicap hurdle at Clonmel and then graduated with a degree in Agricultural Science from Waterford University at the end of last week.

IN FOCUS Orla Queally on her busy life as an equestrian, in marketing and as a talented jockey

IDING my first track winner on Costanuci at Listowel in September meant even more because she is trained by my dad, John, and owned by my mum, Miriam. Costanuci gave me my first racecourse ride in a bumper at Tramore in December 2021, so to get that first win on her five years later was very special. I knew her well, and she had won there before, so I was quietly confident. I had been second a couple of times and was beginning to think the day would never come. Looking back, it probably worked out for the best. Winning in our own colours meant a lot more. Dad was there, but Mum was at home nervously watching. She would rather I stuck to showjumping. She comes to the shows with me but prefers watching the racing on television. Once it was over, she got a massive kick out of my victory. The following morning I went to Emerald Equestrian Centre in Kildare to jump Cillbhrid Millie in the DAFM five-year-old series. Paddy O’Donnell, who gives me a huge amount of help with the showjumping, brought her, and I met him there. I was still on a high and she jumped clear. Then I went to England for work that evening. That’s a fairly typical day. I ride three lots for Dad before starting work with Plusvital at nine. Sometimes I ride a showjumper before work and another on my lunch break. Dad has about ten horses in training and I have four showjumpers. I’m 25 and from Dungarvan in County Waterford. I have always had the horse bug but never imagined I would be

I ride three lots for Dad before starting my day job at nine riding in races. Showjumping took up so much time. I took out my amateur licence at 20, thinking I would like to try it. But once you’ve done it, you want to keep going. Dad was champion amateur and champion point-to-point rider. He had to retire after breaking his hip, so I don’t remember him race-riding but he is 73 and still rides out. He loves horses and the training. I don’t think he’ll ever stop. He doesn’t say a whole pile before a race. It’s usually about being confident, not missing the start and enjoying it. Afterwards, if things haven’t gone well, I might get the silent treatment on the way home in the horsebox. Mum is an accountant and looks after the bills and everything behind the scenes with the owners. Eoin Daly has been with Dad since before I was born and is a massive part of the team. My sister Margaret doesn’t ride but enjoys coming to the shows and racing. She’s doing a master’s in occupational therapy in Galway. The 12-year-old Pat Coyne has been brilliant for us. My brother Sean and I had our first winners on him, mine coming at Ballingarry in May last year. He has sharpened me up and taught me to be awake at the start. He is a great jumper and a fun horse. He still loves racing even though the opens are competitive. Sean has recently gone to Jonjo O’Neill’s and is getting

on well. We keep in touch about the horses and how we are getting on. Costanuci had a break after Listowel and could go to England for Sean to ride. We will probably be sharing her from now on. Showjumping is a big part of my life. Being the leading young rider at the RDS in 2019 was massive, and finishing fifth in the 1.45m Grand Prix at Lier with Gentleman Time was another standout moment.

This summer I competed in the British Speed Derby at Hickstead with Kilnamac Maud, having finished tenth in the qualifier. I have since sold her. I usually buy horses as three- year-olds, produce them and aim to sell them before they are eight or nine. I have three youngsters, aged four, five and six, along with Gentleman Time, who had an injury this year. I’m looking forward to getting him back

into the ring in the new year. Getting some of the youngsters to the RDS would be amazing. Showjumping and racing are different, particularly your position, but the balance, accuracy and confidence help. Seeing a stride and working over poles keep you sharp. development and social media. It is just me in marketing, so there is plenty to cover. I enjoy having something else to concentrate on, and the job gets me out to racing and showjumping yards. We sponsored at Listowel too, so being able to work and ride there was a bonus. The company has been flexible, which helps with fitting everything in.

I

STUDIED business at MTU in Cork, taking a year out between my level seven and honours degree to complete the Irish National Stud course. It was the best six months I could have experienced. I wanted to meet more people in the industry and to try different work. It was very hands-on, and I would recommend it to anyone. I also spent three months in Florida at the start of 2025, working with Senan Hayes and Colm McGuckian. Paddy helped arrange that opportunity. Having mainly been based at home, I wanted to see how other showjumping yards operated. I learned plenty from watching the vets and farriers at work. I have ridden out for Joseph O’Brien, Padraig Roche and John Kiely, and more recently gone into Gerard O’Leary’s yard. I enjoy the training side and being involved with our own horses. Whether I would ever take it on myself, I’m not sure. It’s a difficult business, and Sean might want to do it too. I would love to ride more winners for different people. Dad has been good at finding ladies’ races for me and I was happy riding mainly for him while I gained experience. I’ve picked up the phone only once to ask someone for a ride. I wanted enough experience, and a winner, to feel confident doing that. Winning doesn’t mean outside rides will suddenly come, but it has given me the confidence to start asking. Almost perfect for Doyle as Annabelle Park flies home EAMONN DOYLE made the perfect start to his training career when Throatlash won at Curraghmore in October 2024. In the two years since, the Wexford handler has established himself as a fine addition to the pointing ranks. Doyle has finished each of his first two seasons with a strikerate of 38 per cent, saddling eight winners during his debut campaign before increasing that to ten last season. One of four siblings who train point-to-pointers, Doyle looks capable of maintaining those standards following a productive, if slightly unlucky, start to the campaign last weekend.

Annabelle Park provided him with an opening winner when battling home in Saturday’s four-year-old mares’ maiden at Lisronagh. The daughter of Walk In The Park had finished third on her Monksgrange debut in March, c ha s i ng h o m e t w o h o rs e s subsequently sold for a combined £360,000. Despite that, she failed to find a buyer when offered at Cheltenham in April, leaving the ring unsold at £48,000. Any prospective purchasers who passed her over may have been reconsidering that decision after she opened her account on Saturday.

Doyle came close to completing a double at Rathcannon 24 hours later. Wild Lands held a narrow advantage jumping the last, only to fall and deny the stable what could have been a perfect start from its first two runners of the season.

Curling repeats feat The mares’ open at Lisronagh’s autumn fixture has become one of the most reliable sources of success for Sam Curling. The Tipperary handler has won seven of the race’s eight editions, with The Great Unknown extending that record when making her return to action on Saturday.

The champion mare had begun her title-winning campaign in this contest a year ago, before registering seven victories during the season. Only the 2020 running escaped Curling, when the Patrick Doyle-trained Lady Mangan prevailed. Given the strength of the mares who have passed through Curling’s Skehanagh Stables, his dominance of the race is unsurprising. He has trained the champion mare in five of the last eight seasons, with Longhouse Music, La Feline and The Great Unknown featuring among the Lisronagh race’s winners.

The mares’ open division has struggled for numbers in recent seasons, but the arrival of some new faces has helped to freshen this year’s line-up, including the three-time track winner Moviddy and Rachel’s Secret, winner of a maiden hurdle.

Dunne produces goods Harley Dunne will have taken great satisfaction from results at Down Royal’s two-day fixture. Three Graded races were staged at the meeting and two were won by horses whose careers began in point-to-points with the Wexford handler. Haiti Couleurs provided the highlight in the Grade 1

Remembering Envoi Allen Champion Chase for the first top-level success of his career. It came five years after he had finished second for Dunne in a four-year-old maiden at Borris House. It followed Ash Hobbs landing the Grade 3 Feathard Lady Mares Novice Hurdle for Henry de Bromhead. The sixyear-old had won a Ballycahane maiden for Dunne last year before progressing to the track. For two graduates from the same point-to-point stable to win Graded races at one of the first festivals of the winter is a fine endorsement of Dunne’s production line.

WEEKEND REPORTS

TIPPERARY AT LISRONAGH SATURDAY

Kingdom keeps Condon on top of the world A MEMORABLE ten days for Tessa Condon concluded with a first point-to-point victory on Chiefs Kingdom in the Physicool and INHSC maiden for six-year-olds-and-upwards. A week and a half earlier the Glengoura rider had teamed u p w i t h P h i l i p F e n t o n ’s admirable veteran Lake Chad to register her first winner in a qualified riders’ handicap hurdle in Clonmel. Having just her 12th ride in points, Condon supplemented that breakthrough victory with this Lisronagh success when the Aidan Fitzgerald-trained seven-year-old justified short odds to beat the ten-year-old Sense The Tension. “Tessa comes into us four days a week. I met her at the sales over the summer and I said to her if you come in I’ll give you a few rides,” Fitzgerald said. “When we ran this lad the last day he wasn’t long back in and came on lovely for the run.” Two of the four Doyle siblings who hold a handler’s permit paid a visit to the winner’s

enclosure on the card, with Eamonn Doyle starting his season on a successful note thanks to Annabelle Park in the four-year-old mares’ maiden. The daughter of Walk In The Park had failed to find a buyer at the Tattersalls Cheltenham April Sale following a debut third at Monksgrange. However, she will have put herself on the list of potential purchases after a battling success. With Alan Harney in the saddle, the bay saw off newcomer Moise Teene by a neck as the pair went 20 lengths clear of ten rivals. “I bought her as a foal off Michael O’Neill. She had a lovely first run last season and improved over the summer,” Doyle said. “She’ll go to the sales now.”

Doyle’s brother Donnchadh endured a disappointing spring but has started the new campaign well. That continued here as League Of Legends became his third winner of the season in the four-year-old geldings’ maiden. Turned out again after a third in a bunched finish at Peppards Castle seven days earlier, the Nirvana Du Berlais gelding, who was sourced for €22,000 from the Arqana sales ring as a yearling, is now to be offered again after Rob James guided him to a half-length defeat of newcomer Soldier’s Revenge. Follow Markava was a second winner to show no ill effects from a quick turnaround as she dominated the five-yearold-and-upwards mares’ maiden, having finished second six days earlier at Curraghmore. With just two rivals, the Patrick McCarthy-owned-andbred daughter of Zambezi Sun made all under Pa King to beat Dunabrattin by 38 lengths. “She’s not a bad mare, I’d say, and a w ell-bre d one too,”

Murphy said. “She gave a good exhibition of jumping and she’s learning on the job. I’d imagine we’ll try to sell her now.”

Hearts And Spades shows his hand L A S T s e a s o n ’s c h a m p i o n pointer Hearts And Spades indicated he is in line for another productive campaign by winning a thrilling open in the hands of regular partner Eoin Mahon. The Ian McCarthy-trained bay, still just a seven-year-old, was positioned in mid-division until making smooth progress into third spot from four out with Mahon taking a pull after the third-last. The winner made his way to the front after the penultimate obstacle and runner-up Life In The Park gave the odds-on shot something to think about as he rallied to good effect. Hearts And Spades, though, is classy and he asserted in the closing stages to beat Life In The Park, the 2024 Galway Plate fourth, by three parts of a length. “It’s nice to start back and the track here would have been

The newcomer Dok Holiday moved through to dispute the running with Highland Brook two out, only for the latter to blunder at the last. Dok

Holiday however couldn’t raise his effort inside the final 50 yards as Portrush fourth Harper Brown stormed home, making up in the region of six lengths to lead in the shadow of the post. The son of Walk In The Park had a short head to spare over Bushman and Dok Holiday, who dead-heated for second, with Highland Brook just half a length adrift in fourth. “He ran well to be fourth on his only start at Kirkistown last season but then got sick and wasn’t fully fit in Portrush. He’ll now go to the Cheltenham Sales,” McCaldin said of her f at h e r Wi l s o n D e n n i s o n ’s Harper Brown, a €58,000 foal purchase at the 2022 Goffs December Sale who is a maternal grandson of Listed winning hurdles mare Alegralil. Owner/trainer Sam Curling’s Dr Pep made light of a near

20-month break by benefiting from a well-executed waiting ride from Nicole Lockhead Anderson to collect the sixyear-old-and-upwards geldings’ maiden. The French import, who had been placed on his two starts during the 2024-25 campaign, was still last of the five runners after the third-last. He edged closer from two out to challenge at the last and took up the running after the final obstacle to account for Beau Coup by a length. Benny Walsh’s Leo Brave Fe, who was pulled up on his only previous start at this meeting last November, landed the fiveyear-old geldings’ maiden. The grey, a half-brother to Auteuil Grade 3-placed chasing mare Lola Oak, took command for Barry Stone three out to dismiss Impact Sub by six lengths in the colours of Busher

Bloodstock & Crossgales Stables Partnership.

Double for Jukebox Jury There was yet another Wexford success as Jigsaw Juke, a son of Jukebox Jury who is owned and trained by Jim O’Neill, regained the lead six out in the winnersof-two with Brian Dunleavy’s mount staying on powerfully to beat Sir Topham Hatt by two and three-quarter lengths. Th e Eu g e ne O ’Su l l i va n trained Shannon’s Rainbow obliged in the five-year-oldand-upwards mares’ maiden, the daughter of Jukebox Jury hitting the front 100 yards out to defeat longtime leader Ailes D’Aigles by three lengths under owner Sabrina Maguire’s son Finian. The six-year-old is out of a half-sister to Nicky Henderson’s Champion Chase winner Finian’s Rainbow.

Curling, showed her superior class by defeating Adam Lord’s new addition Moviddy by a comfortable two lengths. “I’m delighted she’s back; s u r e s h e ’s a g r e a t m a r e ,” Curling said. “She’s going real

S E V E N T E E N -Y E A R - O L D Jayden Chute has wasted little time opening his account, registering his first win on just his second point-to-point ride. The Listowel native had finished third on the Gerry Mangan-trained What Path at Castletown Geoghegan three weeks earlier and it was that nine-year-old who supplied him with his breakthrough victory as they beat In Excelsis Deo by four lengths in the open for novice riders. “He’s an old handicapper who knows his job,” Kevin Brouder, representing Mangan, said. “The young lad gave him a good ride and just waited; they got racing early down the back a n d h e j u s t c re p t i n t o i t . Jayden’s with Ian McCarthy a good bit, so we’re happy to get him when we can.” Jonathan Fit zgerald has started the campaign strongly as the Mitchelstown handler, who has run only three horses this season, finds himself with two winners after Rongoright lowered the colours of Hunt Away in the winners-of-three. Ridden by Glenville native Mark O’Flynn, the six-year-old is clearly a potent performer at the Limerick venue as, having landed a winners-of-two event here in April, he supplemented that victory when defeating the hunter chase-placed Hunt Away by five lengths. “We said we’d come here because we knew he would like

the track,” Fitzgerald said. “The only concern was if the ground would suit. There’s a race in Moig South that might suit in two weeks, so we’ll head there if he comes out of this all right. “He loves being in front and Mark always gets it right on him. The two of them have struck up a right partnership.” Having taken over the training licence from his father, Pat, Jack Doyle is continuing the family tradition of producing smart young horses, sending out Limit Of The Law to land the four-year-old maiden. A €20,000 purchase from last year’s July Sale at the Tattersalls Ireland Ratoath sales complex, the Pillar Coral gelding was left clear by the final-fence fall of Wild Lands to defeat fellow first-timer Man Of Priorities by four lengths under Adam Ryan to supply Doyle with his fourth winner of the season. “I bought him up in Fairyhouse,” Pat D oyle said. “I couldn’t come home without him; he was such a good mover and good-looking horse.” Ryan had to settle for second when he teamed up with Jimmy Kelly’s Wrong Decision in the older geldings’ maiden, the pair finishing second to Derby Rock. Trained and ridden by Pa King and owned by his wife Aine, the Milan gelding was not winning out of turn as his fivelength success followed runner-up finishes at

Castletown Geoghegan and Umma House in recent weeks. “He’ll probably go for a winners’ race now. He also has a nice mark on the track so that could be an option,” King said. Paurick O’Connor has struck up a good association with Kildare rider Billy Coonan and the pair successfully combined for a second time in two weeks when Sheen Falls took a big step forward in the five-yearold geldings’ maiden. Th e B r i t i s h - b re d s o n o f Dartmouth had failed to land much of a challenge when making his debut in testing conditions at Moig South. However, O’Connor’s patient approach was rewarded when he beat the vastly more experienced Tinahely runner-up Secret Order by five lengths.

Buckle up for easy win Owner Heather Buckle made a worthwhile trip from Britain to witness Unfastened run out the easiest winner on the card. Placed at Ballindenisk at the end of last season, the Denis Leahy-trained Walk In The Park five-year-old stamped her authority on the mares’ maiden from the second-last to beat Miss Tipp by 18 lengths under Eoin O’Brien. “I’m delighted for Heather, who bred her,” Leahy said. “She’s based in Essex and flew in today and she’s flying out again tonight. She’s a great supporter of the yard.”
