HEALY RACING
LMOST 20 years after winning the novice point-to-point riders’ title, Jack Doyle is back on the scene as a
trainer. Jack, who has taken over the running of the family’s Holycross yard, saddled his first three point-topoint runners at Castletown Geoghegan on Saturday and went home with two winners and a second. I’m sure he’s going to make a success of his new role and build on the great tradition of his father, Pat, who has made the family’s Suirview Stables one of the country’s most respected jumping nurseries. As a youngster, Jack picked up a lot of experience and expertise from his father. He rode 19 winners in his title-winning season in 2006-07 before turning professional. He won valuable races for Emma Lavelle and Victor Dartnall and had almost 200 wins in Britain before relocating to America. There he won several Grade 1 races, including on the exIrish pair Bob Le Beau and Rawnaq. He always kept in touch with things on the home front and got a great thrill from riding horses such as Kaiser Black and Flame Bearer to win Graded races for his father during visits back from America. It’s a vote of confidence in our sport that he is following in his father’s footsteps and I imagine he’ll follow the same pattern, buying young horses, advertising them in the point-to-point field and selling them on. He kicked off Saturday’s double with Endless Drinking, an Affinisea gelding who jumped well for Adam Ryan. His second winner, the veteran Lifetime Ambition, also put in a good round of jumping, apart from a slight mistake at the last, to win the novice riders’ open for James Sampson who handled him well.
Wexford handlers make their mark on the road
Racing will not take place in the Wexford area until the Peppards Castle fixture on October 28 but several of the county’s leading stables were represented at the fixtures in the north, the west and the midlands. Gary Murphy sent Louilood on a long journey to Portrush to contest a

maiden the stable won 12 months ago with Rattlin Home. That race turned out to be significant since the runner-up spot went to The Mourne Rambler, the subsequent Champion Bumper winner. Rattlin Home was sold to join Dan Skelton and was a promising second in a bumper at Kempton in February on his only start last winter. I’m sure Gary will have no trouble finding a buyer for Louliood, a four-year-old by the German-bred Bathyrhon. He made all under Shane O’Rourke to beat Shoes Off, a well-fancied runner from Ger Quinn’s in-form yard. On Sunday, Gary brought Bonnie Long Legs, a daughter of Ol’ Man River to Loughrea to make her debut in a mares’ maiden. After racing in
the front two all the way, she began to look in a spot of bother when headed by Colin Bowe’s runner Roze on the approach to the second-last. She was a couple of lengths down at one stage but rallied between the last two fences and quickened away.
Menelas Colombe passes first test in good style
I always enjoy the Galway Blazers meeting at Loughrea, one of my local tracks, and it was good to go there with a nice young horse, Menelas Colombe in the four-year-old maiden. I rode him prominently just behind the leaders through the first half of the race, and he travelled well in second before taking the lead with two to jump. We were in command at the last, and he strode away from the last to beat his main market rival by almost four lengths. Sometimes, it’s hard to judge the
strength of the four-year-old maidens at this stage of the autumn, but you can get a good idea by looking at the opposition. In this case, the race definitely passes the test, with Rob James, Colin Bowe and Aidan Fitzgerald having horses in the frame. Rob’s horse Shadow Of Dawn ran once last season and showed promise with a third placing in a maiden at Curraghmore. The winner, Lead Officer, and second, Crystal Wings were sold for an aggregate £290,000 at the Goffs Aintree Sale and have joined leading British yards. Menelas Colombe has plenty going for him on pedigree as a half-brother to Gerri Colombe, winner of five Grade 1 chases and second to Galopin Des Champs in the 2024 Cheltenham Gold Cup. It was great to see Colm Whyte, 19, ride his first winner at Loughrea. He looked very assured and cool on the Liam Gilligan-trained Seventy Eight Team. He’s a local lad and has been around horses all his life. His uncle Gerry McMahon trained at Craughwell and was the ownerbreeder of Rockholm Boy who won a Galway Plate for Michael Hourigan. Colm has gained valuable experience working in Paul Gilligan’s yard and is a promising young rider.
False start proves a big help to Georgie and Friend
Georgie Benson, who won the Ladies’ Derby at the Curragh in June on the Johnny Murtagh-trained Fixation, has made a good start to the season. She won a maiden on a Peter Flood-trained gelding on the opening day of the season at Toomebridge and scored on Fierce Friend for the same stable at Loughrea. This race had a story attached. A false start was called after the field set off without the winner. The other runners travelled almost a mile, using up valuable energy that played to Fierce Friend’s advantage. There was also plenty of incident in the Portrush race in which reigning champion woman rider Nicole Lockhead Anderson got off the mark for the season. Three of the five runners were pulled up, and Nicole was left clear on the Sam Curling-trained Nancy Wheeler when the challenging Caldanagh fell at the last.

IN FOCUS Beth Armstrong offers a glimpse of what’s involved in preparing for a Loughanmore meeting
I
VERY rarely see a race at Loughanmore. We spend our time in the marquee sorting out declarations and entries, and although I can sometimes sneak out to see the horses in the paddock, the second I put my nose outside, somebody callS me back. Unless people come into the marquee to say hello, I don’t get much chance to mingle. Plenty do, which is lovely, because I enjoy dealing with everyone connected to the point-to-point. I grew up on our family farm in Armagh and always had a pony. I hunted with the Tynan and Armagh for years, moving on to horses as I got older. When I became a teacher, I moved to the Templepatrick and Parkgate area, right in the middle of East Antrim hunting country, and started hunting with them. That has been me ever since. I taught in primary school and loved it. I’m retired now but I really miss the children, the parents and the whole thing. Primary school is the heart of all education. I became hunt secretary first and then took on the point-topoint when our secretary retired. I’ve been involved for a long time, but you’re still learning and looking for advice. Nobody’s perfect. We have a fabulous team of eight to ten dedicated committee members, mostly
We have a fabulous team of eight to ten dedicated committee members loyal hunt supporters who have been involved for many years. We generally communicate through WhatsApp and meet when required. We’re very fortunate with our raceday volunteers. Friends and supporters come every time, including people who aren’t hunt members. They help set up, arrive on the day knowing what needs to be done and get on with it. Thankfully, we have no problem getting help. It’s a great network. We’re aware that we need younger people coming through. We have a number of younger volunteers who help set up the course and take on jobs on the day. We’ll put a younger member with an experienced fence steward so they can see how it’s done. They are the future of the hunt and the point-topoint. Preparation for me begins about two months before a meeting. I check, doublecheck and triple-check. You contact the vets to make sure they’re available, confirm the doctor and ambulance cover, and give everyone plenty of notice. Then you move on to sponsors and the local council,
who help with things such as bins. Marquees have to be booked too, and I check that absolutely nothing has been left out. A fortnight beforehand, we issue complimentary tickets to sponsors and farmers. The huntsmen also look after the farmers with tickets and letters of thanks. Their support is important, and we want them to know we appreciate it. The week of the meeting is when stress levels go through the roof. You’re sorting number cloths and declaration sheets, confirming the race stewards and fence stewards are coming and checking everything before the day. My very dear late friend Brian Dougan told me years ago that you can breathe when the first race is off, and that is true. You know the vets and doctors are there, the fence stewards are in position, and the course is fine. I don’t think people realise
how much work goes on behind the scenes. We do it because we love it, and when the day is a success, it has all been worthwhile. The expense of running a point-to-point has changed enormously. Years ago, a lot of the veterinary and medical cover was provided voluntarily. We now have to pay for much more, such as ambulance cover and staff, and the doctors have to be traumatrained. It’s very expensive, so good entries and people coming through the gate are important. Our sponsors are brilliant, and many have supported us for years. Red Mills sponsored a series that had its final at Loughanmore, and when that stopped they didn’t go away. They have continued supporting us ever since. That loyalty means a lot. Our landowner, Wilson Dennison, deserves a special mention, as does his family. He’s a great racing man and is
as interested in Loughanmore being a success as we are. We’re very appreciative of their support. The Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board (IHRB) is very helpful. The officials work with us and offer advice. Our course team listens and acts on their suggestions. We all want to maintain a good track, with good fences and everything as safe as we can make it.
W
HAT makes Loughanmore so special is its homeliness and the welcome everybody gets. We provide hospitality for helpers, sponsors and farmers, and the ladies contribute sandwiches, buns, soup and all sorts. Easter is a lovely occasion. If the weather is good, people bring picnics, set up camp and make a day of it. The young farmers come, there’s music in the bar and a great atmosphere. When the last race is over, nobody is in a hurry home. There’s certainly no queue at the gate to get out. Traditionally we raced on Easter Monday and Tuesday,
NEWS AND VIEWS
but a few years ago we changed to Saturday and Monday. That has worked well because Sunday gives us time to put things right before the second day. If the weather has been wet, we can sort access, move fences if necessary and get everything ready again. Easter attracts bigger crowds, but my job is the same at all three meetings. Our October sponsors are equally valued, and the same preparation goes into each fixture. It gives me great satisfaction to reach the end of the day knowing everybody is happy, the horses and jockeys are safe, and everything has gone well. You can sit down for ten minutes, then clearing up begins. Work doesn’t stop, but the relief is tremendous. Loughanmore is precious to us. We have a great team, and we try to make it better every time. We hope for good weather and a good crowd, and that everyone enjoys the day. The course is all set up and ready to go for this Saturday, and we’re looking forward to welcoming everyone to Loughanmore. Beth Armstrong was talking to Debbie McCrellis

No momentum lost as Endless Drinking sets tone
WHEN City Slippers provided Pat Doyle with his final winner as a handler at Tattersalls in Ma y i t b ro u g ht d o w n t h e curtain on one of th e most successful training careers in the point-to-point field. The handover to his son Jack represented the beginning of a new ch apter but Saturday’s meeting at Castletown Geoghegan suggested little momentum has been lost in the transition. A d o u b l e p rov i d e d Ja c k D oy l e w i t h a n i m m e d i at e statement of intent. Endless Drinking opened his account by landing the four-year-old maiden under Adam Ryan, having begun his career with a sixth place for Pat at Tullaherin in April. The experienced Lifetime Ambition then completed the double in the open for novice riders, narrowly prevailing
Angle to follow in older maidens

under James Sampson. There was also a neat link with the closing stages of Pat’s training career as City Slippers returned to finish second in the winners-of-two contest. The Suirview Stables team have one of the most illustrious records for producing subsequent Grade 1 winners through this sphere, including from this very fixture.
It was only two years ago that Pat sent out Honesty Policy to finish second in the four-yearold maiden before the Jukebox Jury gelding progressed to become a Grade 1 winner for Gordon Elliott that season. Saturday’s results would suggest that, despite the change of name on the licence, l i tt l e e l s e ha s c ha ng e d at Suirview Stables.
It is not a new phenomenon, but one trend that was notable across last weekend’s fixtures was the impact of horses with relatively recent track form in older maidens. Two of last weekend’s three races in that particular age category were won by horses who were running in a pointto-point for the first time, h av i n g b e e n c a m p a i g n e d under rules. At Portrush on Saturday, Sutherland dominated th e disappointing match race that was the older geldings’ maiden on the Route card. The six-year-old had run ten times under rules, most recently campaigned by Tom Ellis, for whom he was last seen finishing seventh in a handicap hurdle at Southwell in May off a mark of 108.
It was only ten days after that effort that the Flemensfirth gelding was purch ased for £7,000 to join Maghera trainer Gary McGill, who saddled him to win by 22 lengths at Portrush. Twenty-four hours later, the result was similar. Couldntmakeitup prevailed in the fiverunner older geldings’ maiden on his first start between the flags, h aving run 16 times under rules, placing in four of them, and currently rated 92 over hurdles. He is a rare runner in this sph ere for James Nash. Th e Curragh trainer last saddled a runner in the pointing fields at the corresponding fixture eight years earlier, but with his family connection to the fixture, through his mother-inl aw Pau l i n e Gav i n , i t wa s certainly a popular result. Following horses in maidens
switching from rules to points could be the angle to follow in the coming weeks.
Welcome new faces in the riding ranks
The second weekend of the season delivered an encouraging sight, with four young jockeys having their first rides. Rachel White, Jayden Chute, Ravi Daly O’Toole and Sorcha North made their debuts across the three fixtures to add four new names to the riding ranks. Point-to-pointing has long provided an invaluable grounding for young jockeys, offering opportunities to develop their skills and gain experience before potentially advancing into the professional ranks, should they so wish. For four riders to begin their careers so early in the campaign is a welcome and positive sign for the season ahead.

WEEKEND REPORTS
WESTMEATH AT CASTLETOWN GEOGHEGAN SATURDAY
Doyle sent on his way with Endless Drinking a cause for celebration A RESCHEDULED Castletown Geoghegan fixture was the setting for Jack Doyle to record his first success as a handler. The Tipperaryman took over the licence previously held by his father, Pat, in the summer and it was Endless Drinking who opened his account in the Westmeath Foxhounds fouryear-old maiden. A brother to Gavin Cromwell’s dual winner Endless Talking – who holds a 121 hurdle rating – Endless Drinking provided more than ample indication of ability by finishing sixth on his only outing at Tullaherin last term when having to contend with interference two out. The son of Affinise a was bounced out in front here by Adam Ryan upsides Back The Park, and the pair disputed the running until the latter went on with three fences remaining. Endless Drinking was one and a half lengths adrift in second spot from two out but stormed back to challenge approaching the last. Another superb leap sealed

victory as he powered clear to score by two lengths in the colours of Carsena Bloodstock. “We’ve always liked him and Adam thinks the track here was plenty sharp enough for him,” Doyle said of Endless Drinking, a €42,000 acquisition by Aubrey McMahon at the 2025 Derby Sale. He is out of an unraced half-sister to dual Grade 2 hurdle winner Kilcooley. Doyle was back in the number one spot with Lifetime Ambition unde r first-time partner James Sampson in the novice riders’ open. A Grade 1-placed chaser for Jessica Harrington, Lifetime Ambition has developed into a smart open campaigner since reverting to the pointing ranks in the autumn of 2023. The 11-year-old set off in front and gave another assured

Although Dreal Deal refused to yield, he was a neck adrift of Lifetime Ambition at the line with a ten-length break to the third, What Path. “He’s a great horse to have and he will probably stick to opens, although he could run in a hunter chase towards the end of the season. He will now run at Tattersalls in two weeks,” Doyle said of Lifetime Ambition, who runs in the colours of Timmy O’Byrne. It was an afternoon of close finishes, none more so than in the five - and six-year-old mares’ maiden as the judge w a s u n a b l e t o s ep a r a t e Foreveradiva and Silverado Blue when they flashed across the line locked together with a dead-heat being called. It was Brian Dunleavy who steered Foreveradiva to success for Aidan Fitzgerald, while Bertie Finn was on the Colin Bowe-trained Silverado Blue. Dunleavy, who had recorded a 50th points victory at
Toomebridge the previous week, went on to complete a double on Caroline McCaldin’s Salvadorhill in the five- and six-year-old geldings’ maiden. Salvadorhill, having pulled up on his only previous start at Tattersalls in April, disputed the running until ove rtake n two out by fellow pacesetter
and runner-up The Real Diego. The victorious son of El Salvador e rode d The Real Diego’s advantage just before the last and, throwing the faster leap, he stormed to the fore on the flat to oblige by threequarters of a length. McCaldin indicate d that Salvadorhill, who is owned by the trainer’s

Seven days after he sent out an openingday treble in Toomebridge he r et u r n ed t o t h e w i n n e r ’s e n c l o s u r e w h en C l o u g h Clouds made a successful reappearance in the open. Unlucky to be carried out at Loughanmore last Easter on his first outing in ope n company, the grey six-year-old cruised alongside David Christie’s West Of Idaho between the final two fences.
From there, Noel McParlan was toying with his chief rival as he remained motionless in the saddle all the way to the line to record a snug halflength triumph. “He’s a typical Cloudings; they seem to improve all the time,” Quinn said. “Noel said he hated the ground, so with that in mind it’s great to see. We’ll look for another run in open company, likely at Kirkistown, before heading to a hunter chase.” Christie did not leave the w i n d s w ep t s ea s i d e v enu e empty handed as his Fortune Lad ran out the wide-margin winner of the winners-of-three. The six-year-old had been forced to settle for runner-up honours in two previous visits to the track, including a
two-and-a-half-length defeat by the reopposing Weespoof. However, the John Hegarty and Jennifer O’Kane-owne d bay reversed that form with a 37-length victory under Barry O’Neill. “They went some gallop and having only two rivals wasn’t ideal because he needs a bit of company,” David Christie jnr, son of the winning handler, said. “The better the race, the better he’ll be.” Hegarty and O’Kane remain loyal supporters of the fixture, and they sponsored the Royal Court Hotel five-year-old-andupwards mares’ maiden, which saw Sam Curling responsible for the race’s only finisher for the second year in a row. A year earlier, it was Picture O f Yo u w h o r et u r n ed i n
isolation and it was the similarly solitar y figure of Nancy Wheeler who crossed the line as the only finisher from the five who set out. Ridden by the reigning ladies champion, Nicole Lockhead Anderson, the pair were left clear with the departure of Caldanagh at the second-last.
Just a piece of work for Sutherland
Oran McGill was sporting his own silks as he steered Sutherland to victory in the older geldings’ maiden. Facing just one rival on his first outing for McGill’s father, Gary, the 108-rated hurdler, who cost only £7,000 at the Doncaster Sales in May, began to get the upper hand over his sole rival, Zarushio, from the
home bend to win by 22 lengths. “Oran was cute enough to ride it like a piece of work to give the horse a confidence-booster,” handler McGill said. “He’s a Flemensfirth and he’s a bit hotheaded, so this will do him the world of good. We might go back to the track now.” Tullynakill got only as far as the first flight on his debut in a Downpatrick maiden hurdle at the end of August but a switch to the pointing fields was immediately rewarded. The Stuart Crawford-trained Capr i gelding jumpe d the penultimate fence at the back of the field and, despite making an error at the last, the grey finishe d best to defeat the previously placed Downpatrick Hill by half a length under Eoin Mahon.

Louilood and Shane O’Rourke on their way to an impressive victory
Bonnie Long Legs shows off front-running ability to maintain Murphy run TWENTY-FOUR hours after introducing the impressive Portrush winner Louilood, Gar y Murphy sent out his second four-year-old winner of the weekend when Bonnie Long Legs made a winning debut in the four-year-old mares’ maiden. As had been the case at Portrush, it was Shane O’Rourke who the Wexford handler turned to for the ride on his Ol’ Man River mare and front-running tactics were again employed which saw the bay successfully fend off the more experienced Roze by a length and a half. “This is a lovely filly,” Murphy said. “I don’t actually own her; my vet in the yard does. She was a bit weak last year and was too g ood a filly to be running on good ground last season. She has a g reat pedigree and has always done everything you want.” Peter Flood is another handler who has started the campaig n strongly. Off the mark at the season-opening Toomebridg e fixture a week earlier, the Enfield trainer saddled his second winner from just two runners when Fierc e Frien d cap t u re d a controversial five-year-old geldings’ maiden. The Mahler gelding, who had ended last season with a second at Ballindenisk on his final outing for Harley Dunne, remained at the start on the first attempt to start the race. A false start was declared, however his 11 rivals completed a circuit of the track before being stopped. When the race was restarted, it was the fresher legs of Fierce Friend t hat p re va i l e d a s G e o rg i e Benson steered him to a oneand-a-half-length victory over Barna. “We were maybe a little bit lucky. We bought him for a bit of fun,” Flood said. “He hadn’t shown a whole lot at home, so this is great. We might try to go for a farmers’ race. He had luck on his side today but my horses are in good form anyway.” Reigning champion Derek O’Connor struck a winning note when Menelas Colombe, who he also trains, made a successful debut in the fouryear-old geldings’ maiden. It’s great to get a winner, especially at my local track.” Ar Aghaidh Leat put the experience she had g ained from three efforts in the spring to g ood use when Lee Shanahan produced her from off the pace to defeat Special Protector by three lengths in the five-year-old-and-upwards

It was a smaller field today and a big long straight which suited her.” The longstanding track maiden Couldntmakeitup made a successful switch to the pointing fields in the older geldings’ maiden for novice riders. The 92-rated hurdler may have b e en app ear ing in a point-to-point for the first time but the experience of his 16 efforts under rules stood to him as Ronan McParland guided the James Nash-trained Court Cave gelding to a one-and-ahalf length victory over Ballintemple King.

ENTRIES have a reference number to the horse’s last run, form figures (latest on right), owner, handler and exclusive rating (same scale as rules RPR). For penalised horses we suggest deducting half a point per pound (penalties not confirmed until race-day). Irish point-to-point entries are ordered as follows: 1 Horses whose owner has more than one entry, ordered alphabetically by: (a) owner, (b) horse. 2 Horses whose handler has more than one entry, ordered alphabetically by: (a) handler, (b) horse. 3 Remaining horses, ordered alphabetically. Abbreviations: B-brought down; b-baulked; C-carried out; d-disqualified; F-fell; P-pulled up; R-ran out; r-refused; S-slipped up; U-unseated rider.
