Weekend meetings survive storms to bring stories from heartlands

T

WO of the three fixtures at the weekend were in the south-east of the country, hard hit by the first of the two storms that passed across Ireland during the bank holiday period. We were fortunate the two fixtures went ahead as planned, unlike Monday’s fixture under rules at Wexford. Saturday’s meeting at Peppards Castle was the first of the season in County Wexford, where so many of our top trainers come from. Local stables took all six races on the card. Colin Bowe and Gary Murphy have been the fastest starters in the region this season. Both saddled a winner at Peppards Castle and kept up the good work on Sunday. Colin brought his total for the month to nine by adding a double at the Meath & Tara meeting at Tattersalls Farm, and Gary saddled his fourth winner of the season at Curraghmore in County Waterford. Gary enjoyed a good spell of form with his early bunch of four-yearolds in March and is now doing well with a group given more time to mature. Four of his six runners in this age group have won, with Shane O’Rourke riding all four. The team’s winner at Peppards Castle was Secret Despatch, a Soldier Of Fortune gelding. I trained the runner-up, Conholt Hill, who finished well clear of the remainder. I like him enough to have reason for thinking that the winner is a good prospect. At Curraghmore, Gary’s Jukebox Jury filly Verdict Is In looked well above average when justifying favouritism with a clear-cut victory over Travail D’Amour, whose trainer Robert Tector won the four-year-old geldings’ maiden at the fixture with El Jacko, an El Salvador gelding who has made good progress since last season. He made his debut in a Monksgrange maiden won by the Sean Doyle-trained Wordfromhome, who joined Paul Nicholls after a £320,000 purchase at the Goffs Aintree Sale. Morning Fog made a winning debut for the Bowe team at Peppards Castle. At Tattersalls Farm, the stable’s Cluain Meala, a faller at the first at Tinahely the previous Sunday, gained compensation. On the same card, Now U Have It, a faller at

The Jack Doyle-trained Lifetime Ambition and James Sampson (red) win the open for novice riders at Tattersalls Farm on Sunday from West Of Idaho

Umma House a week earlier, won the four-year-old mares’ maiden for the father-and-son team of Johnny and Josh Berry. Barry O’Neill rode Colin’s pair of four-year-old winners, while Ronan McParland was on Surf The Wave in the unplaced maiden at Tattersalls Farm. This was a second winner of the season for Ronan, who also had a recent success on the track for Peter Fahey in a handicap hurdle at Punchestown. He is eligible for the Under-21 riders’ title, as is James Sampson, who had his second win of the year on the Jack Doyle-trained Lifetime Ambition in the open for novice riders at Tattersalls. One of my main hopes for this season is that handlers will give riders in this category plenty of opportunities. Last season, Shane Cotter (16

wins) and David Doyle (14) dominated. Denis Murphy has provided Shane with a winner on the last two weekends. Keppol’s Poet was a comfortable scorer for them in a five-year-old geldings’ maiden at Peppards Castle. It was a good weekend for the women’s defending champion, Nicole Lockhead Anderson. She teamed up with the Sean Doyletrained Between Waters for a comfortable win at Peppards Castle and then had luck on her side in the winners-of-one at Curraghmore when Colvin gave Mark Byrne, from Kilconnell in County Galway, his first success as a trainer. Colvin was in third when Stan Well Back fell at the last, hampering Roman Paris, who unseated his rider. Between Waters is a well-bred mare who has had an up-and-down

career. She is by Walk In The Park out of Clear Riposte, a King’s Theatre mare who was a Grade 2 juvenile winner for Willie Mullins. After making a winning debut for Sean in a maiden at Lisronagh as a four-yearold, Between Waters joined Nicky Henderson and was placed twice over hurdles before returning to Wexford, winning four of her seven starts in points two seasons ago. Last season, she ran only twice, so it was good to see her back in form, winning easily from Galon De Vauzelle. Last season, there was not much strength in depth in the mares’ division, dominated by Sam Curling’s The Great Unknown, winner of six of her seven races and long odds-on in most of them. Between Waters will add some quality this time around. Also on Sunday, Donnchadh Doyle

sent Monbeg Park to Curraghmore for his first point-to-point start since he won first time out almost five years ago. Ridden by Alan Harney, who has now lost his 5lb claim, he challenged late to win snugly from the former Henry de Bromheadtrained Harry Des Ongrais, a first runner as a handler for her rider Sophie Carter. The nine-year-old Monbeg Park won five races on the track when in Sean’s care and also had the distinction of beating Jimmy Mangan’s star Spillanes Tower in his novice hurdling days. He spent last season with Jack Foley and ran his best race when second to Henry de Bromhead’s Ryanair Chase winner Heart Wood in a Grade 3 event at Punchestown. With that profile, he has the potential to be a major force in open races.

IN FOCUS Owner-breeder Tommy Frisby on his exciting run of success I WENT to Umma House the Sunday before last hoping Redacresmiriam would give us something to celebrate. I bred and part-own her, and she won the opening four-year-old mares’ maiden. Supreme Walk, who I own with my brother Paddy, Michelle and Paudie Burke, won the last for Colin Bowe. We had a great day and an even better night! We fancied ‘Miriam’ beforehand. Trainer Mick Goff liked her chances and her rider Harry Goff definitely fancied her, so I had a bet on her. She is a lovely, big mare and became the third four-year-old point-to-point winner out of Redacresruby, following Red Acres Georgie and Red Acres Max. I know how lucky I have been to get three winners from one mare. I keep the horses at home in Mullinavat in south Kilkenny. My family were farmers but kitchens have been my business for nearly 50 years. These days I do the measuring, plans and pricing, with very little of the physical work. Between the business and the horses, there is plenty to keep me going.

Redacresruby is the mare of a lifetime My brother Dick was my introduction to horses. He has always been involved, buying foals to bring on and sell as three-year-olds. I started buying mares about 17 or 18 years ago and now have five, a mixture of Flat and jumps. It began as a hobby, although it has become more serious since. Another brother, Paddy, works with me and helps look after the horses too. His help makes a big difference. My children have their own work, but if I need a hand, they will give it. I never rode or hunted. My sport was GAA, particularly hurling, and I played for Kilkenny at a minor level. Between that, the business and bringing up a family, I was busy enough before the horses came along. I am 67 now and have relaxed a little, but still like having plenty to do. Redacresruby has been my most successful mare. We bought her for €7,500 at the Derby Sale in 2017 as a threeyear-old. I liked her, she was not terribly expensive and,

being by Presenting, she appealed as a broodmare. The man selling her thought I would race her but I told him I wanted to breed from her. That was always the plan. The Red Acres name comes from the townland in Mullinavat where my family comes from. There were 16 in my family, so there are plenty of Frisbys around south Kilkenny and further afield. Red Acres Georgie was named after my late father, Georgie. With Order Of St George as her sire, the name fitted nicely. Redacresmiriam is named after my daughter, while Red Acres Max got his name from Maxios. ‘Georgie’ gave us one of our most memorable days when she won at Ballindenisk. I had been at Stowlin a fortnight earlier when she fell two out while leading subsequent

Champion Bumper winner Bambino Fever. She was going well, and I thought she would win, although you never know until they get home. It was disappointing but she had shown ability. Then she took on the geldings at Ballindenisk and won by 14 lengths. I was there again and that was a tremendous day. She is now with Tony Mullins and has been second on her last two starts, so her turn is coming. ‘Max’ gave us another great afternoon when he won at Dromahane last November. There were some lovely horses in that race, and he won by a head. He has since won a bumper for Jamie Snowden and the reports have been encouraging. I saw an interview in which six people in the yard were asked to name their favourite horse to

The first horse I owned in a syndicate was Outlaw Princess, and she won a point-to-point first time out. People told me they had been in horses for years without a winner, and there we were winning straight away. It encouraged me, although you soon learn it is not always that easy. Whispering Royal winning on his debut at Dundalk for Barry Fitzgerald was another night to remember. I had been unable to sell him, so we put him into training. I went on my own that night and it felt like a very short journey home. Breeding is a tough game, especially competing with people who have 100 or 200 mares. With the Flat mares, I have given some a break to bring their covering dates forward. Late foals can be difficult to sell, particularly to breeze-up buyers. You have to think about what buyers want. I enjoy both Flat and jumps. I am hopeful there will be more luck to come with the Flat horses, while getting a point-to-point winner and seeing it sell well is hard to beat. I have enough horses and am not looking to expand. If I were 25 or 30, perhaps I would feel differently. For now, I enjoy breeding them, watching them develop and going racing. Days like Umma House make all the effort worthwhile.

follow. Three picked Red Acres Max. You keep following them after they leave and I am looking forward to seeing him out again. My connection with Mick came through Dick, and we work together with the Red Acres horses. Mick, Caitriona and Harry are great people. Caitriona does an enormous amount of work and Harry is a great lad. Mick has a three-year-old by Eagles By Day out of Redacresruby who will, I hope, run in the spring. At home, I have a two-year-old filly by the same sire and a yearling by Santiago. The mare is back in foal to Maxios. Eventually, I would like to keep one of her daughters to continue the line. I have three three-year-olds coming along with Mick, including a Getaway filly he likes. Supreme Walk will probably run in a winners-of-one in the next couple of weeks, so could build on his Umma House success for Colin.

point-to-point fixtures across Ireland throughout the season, culminating in the final at Ballynoe next spring, when a €3,000 bonus will be awarded to the owner of the winning mare in the final, subject to confirmation. Speaking following the opening leg, John Hore, business manager at GAIN Equine Nutrition, said: “The start of the Gain Mares Series always marks the beginning of an exciting journey for everyone involved. “We’re proud to continue supporting a series that means so much to owners, handlers and riders across the country. It showcases the strength and depth of Irish point-to-point racing and we look forward to seeing this year’s qualifiers emerge as the road to Ballynoe unfolds.” To qualify for the final, mares must be maidens at the beginning of the season and finish first, second or third in a qualifying point-to-point race during the current season.

A busy autumn schedule of sales gets under way later this week when ThoroughBid stages its October Sale. The online auction house is celebrating its fifth anniversary this year, and to mark the occasion its Point2Rules sales bonus has been doubled. Any point-to-pointer aged four to six bought via a ThoroughBid online auction who goes on to win on their first start under rules after the sale will trigger £10,000 in bonus payments, with £5,000 going to the consignor and £5,000 to the purchaser. That incentive has resulted in several horses with recent point-to-point form being catalogued, including Caroline M c C a l d i n ’s C a s t l e t o w n G e oghegan w inner Salva dorhill and Silverado Blue, who won a maiden on the same card for Colin Bowe. IT PROVED to be a particularly memorable weekend for the Tector family, with success arriving at the Aviva Stadium on Saturday evening and in the point-to-point fields less than 24 hours later. Charlie Tector struck first when scoring a 63rd-minute try for Leinster in their BKT United Rugby Championship victory over provincial rivals Munster. Attention then switched to Curraghmore on Sunday, when his brother Robert sent out an impressive winner of the fouryear-old geldings’ maiden. El Jacko opened his account by nine lengths, providing Tector with a second winner from just four runners this season. The result will also have pleased Paul Nicholls. El Jacko had finished third on his debut at Monksgrange in March, when beaten 25 lengths by Wordfromhome and Road To Destiny, two horses subsequently purchased by Nicholls for a combined £520,000. That form now has a notably stronger appearance following E l J a c k o ’s C u r r a g h m o r e success. The Coolbawn Stables team went close to completing a double at the Waterford fixture,

dedicated session within its Horses-in-Training sale at Kill Paddocks. Earlier in the year, Goffs added a similar point-to-point session to its February sale, which produced a top price of €125,000 for Denis Murphy’s Ballyvodock winner Lady Aurora. Goffs has also announced a fur ther change to its preChristmas point-to-point sales,

with the Coral Gold Cup Sale in Newbury being replaced by the Goffs Tingle Creek Sale. Sandown’s marquee fixture last staged a post-racing sale in 2022 when Donnchadh Doyle sold Brook Bay for £380,000, and this year’s sale will be on Saturday, December 5.

WEEKEND REPORTS

Wexford dominates as Morning Fog sparkles on debut THERE were no weather issues at Peppards Castle as Colin Bowe continued his explosive start to the season by saddling Morning Fog to post a scintillating debut success, but at times an unlikely one, in the Tattersalls Ireland November NH Sale 4YO Maiden. One of five newcomers in the 13-runner contest, which was the biggest field of the afternoon, Morning Fog travelled well close to the pace until losing his pitch on the inner as the field bunched up after three out. Barry O’Neill then had to switch his mount to the outer a n d t h e v i c t o r i ou s s o n o f Jukebox Jury went fourth on the run to the second-last. The victorious grey then surged past his three remaining rivals on the outer before the final fence and, although none too clever there, the €80,000 Derby sale graduate still returned with a comprehensive two and a half lengths to spare over favourite Steak And Wine. “ H e ’s a g u t s y s o r t w h o wanted to win, and Barry says that he had to go around them all,” Bowe said of the Milestone

Bloodstock Ltd-owned Morning Fog, whose unraced grandam is a half-sister to Amy Murphy’s Grade 1-winning novice chaser Kalashnikov, who won Newbury’s Betfair Handicap Hurdle. On an afternoon in which all six winners were trained in Wexford, Sean Doyle, one of the mainstays of this fixture, was all smiles following the success of his mare Between Waters in the ladies’ open. Between Waters, sporting Doyle’s own silks, was left second at halfway following the exit of Magic Sadler as Mickie Angel held a clear advantage. Mickie Angel then came back to his rivals from three out and a supremely confident Nicole Lockhead Anderson sent Between Waters through to lead on the inner after two out. It was all plain sailing thereafter as the eight-year-old,

posting a sixth points success, eased clear to beat Galon De Vauzelle by an unextended ten and a half lengths. “It’s great to have her back as she lost her way and a handful of mine were not quite right in the spring,” Doyle said of the Wa l k I n T h e Pa r k-s i r e d Between Waters. “Nicole gave her a super ride and, if it stays raining, she could run in the hunter chase in Fairyhouse in a couple of weeks’ time.” Gary Murphy has his string in cracking order, and the Cu d g l e y St a b l e s o p e ra t o r struck with the Shane O’Rourke-ridden newcomer Secret Dispatch in the fouryear-old auction maiden. The Poet’s Word gelding, whose Indian River-sired dam Keppols Queen was a dual Grade 3-winning novice hurdler who was placed third in a Grade 1 at the Punchestown festival, gave a breathtaking display of fencing from the front with Shane Cotter. They surged clear from two out to repel newcomer

Harney loses his claim with Monbeg Park win THE Donnchadh Doyletrained Monbeg Park indicated he has a productive campaign ahead of him by making a winning return to points duty in the Cooney Furlong Grain Company Open. The nine-year-old, a former 149-rated chaser who recorded the most prestigious of his five track successes for Doyle’s brother Sean in a €45,000 Leopardstown handicap chase in March 2025, was covered up by Alan Harney in mid-division as veteran Pat Coyne took the nine runners along. Harry Des Ongrais edged ahead with two fences remaining, but Monbeg Park came through to challenge approaching the last. The winning son of Walk In The Park readily quickened to lead some 50 yards out en route to beating Harry Des Ongrais by a half-length.

Verdict Is In produced a blistering turn of foot to quicken impressively off a slow gallop to make a winning start to her racing career Pat Coyne meanwhile secured the minor honours, a further three and a half lengths adrift. This was a memorable success for Harney, a native of nearby Kilmacow, who is a key member of Doyle’s staff, as he was forfeiting his 5lb allowance. “It’s great to get his head back in front and we’ll let him find his feet. He’ll be kept to opens for Alan to ride,” Doyle said of the nine-year-old. The Gary Murphy-trained n e w c o m e r Ve r d i c t I s I n showed a blistering turn of foot

A fourth individual fouryear-old maiden winner of the season for trainer Murphy, Verdict Is In made smooth progress to lead before two out and the victorious daughter of Jukebox Jur y then readily quickened clear approaching t h e l a s t t o d i s m i s s f e l l ow debutante Travail D’Amour by eight and a half lengths in the Turbine Syndicate silks. “She’s a lovely filly and she just could be different gravy,” Murphy said of Verdict Is In, whose Kapgarde-sired winning dam Louise Royale is a sister to six winners, including Listed Auteuil-winning hurdler Lou B u c k ’s w i t h d u a l G r a d e 1-winning hurdler Yanworth also featuring in this same pedigree. Galway handler Mark Byrne

celebrated his initial training success courtesy of Colvin in the winners-of-one. In a most eventful contest, longtime leader Stan Wellback seemed set for success on the run to the final fence, only to fall when holding in the region of a two-length advantage. The pursuing Roman Parish was then hampered, cruelly unseating. Colvin, some five lengths adrift in third at the time, was then left clear to finish alone under Nicole Lockhead Anderson. The seven-year-old Colvin, a Loughanmore maiden winner 1 2 m o n t h s a g o f o r St u a r t Crawford, will now contest another winners’ race. Owner-trainer Robert Tector appears to have a useful sort in El Jacko, who stepped forward from his third-placed Monksgrange debut effort last season

to run his rivals ragged under Jack Hendrick in the four-yearold geldings’ maiden. El Jacko, who really stood out in the preliminaries, made smooth progress before three out to pick up the running after that fence. El Jacko, who ultimately traces back to threetime Grade 1-winning hurdler Anzum, was well in command from two out and coasted home nine lengths clear of Doc Callaghan.

Narrow win for Barlogue Adam Feeney made his initial m o u nt o f t h e ca m p a i g n a winning one aboard ownert r a i n e r R o i s i n H i c k e y ’s seasonal debutant Barlogue in the five-year-old geldings’ maiden. Placed on two out of his four star ts last ter m, Barlogue disputed the running until overtaken before two out. The

winning son of Soldier Of Fortune regained a narrow advantage after this secondlast fence and asserted on the run-in to contain Buxerolles by three parts of a length. There was yet another close finish in the five-year-old and upwards mares’ maiden as pointing debutante Liss Eile put her vast track experience to good use by forging to the front in the closing stages under her h a n d l e r G a r r e t t A h e r n ’s son Josh Ahern to thwart the front-running Follow Markava by a length. This was a particularly sweet victory for the younger Ahern as he owns Liss Eile in partnership with Gerard Gubbins from Bartlemy. Monbeg Park (nearest) takes the Open contest under Alan Harney

Brume D’Ete, owned and traine d by Harle y Dunne, secured the inner with Frankie Murphy after six out in the five a n d s i x- y e a r- o l d m a re s’ maiden, an initiative that was to reap dividends as the French-bred defeated Amaretto Sour by a length and a half.

Bowe back in business as Cluain Meala and Surf The Wave secure a double THE Colin Bowe team’s return to form was further underlined by a double, opened by Cluain Meala, who came from off the pace to land the Tattersalls Cheltenham November Sale 4YO Geldings Maiden. Barry O’Neill delivered the Sholokhov gelding with his challenge approaching the last, as patient tactics proved to be key in the half-length defeat of the always prominent Killyman in a strongly run heat. “He had a very good run last year in Knockanohill but then, as everyone knows, mine were out of sorts for a while after so I’m delighted to get him back on track now,” Bowe said. “Barry gave him a super ride; he felt they were going an awfully fast gallop, so he took his time, and he should be a nice staying horse.” It was Ronan McParland that c o m p l e t e d t h e Mi l e s t o n e Stables double on the card when he guided Surf The Wave to a one-and-a-half-length victory in the five-year-olds and upwards maiden. The pair had come a cropper at the penultimate fence when

still holding place prospects at Loughrea in the spring, and they made amends by striking the front after the last to defeat fellow Wexford raider Star Charm. “It’s been a brilliant start to the season,” McParland said after riding his third winner of the season.

“ There are a lot of good people behind me and I still have plenty to work on to improve. I hope to keep kicking and stay sound.” Now U Have It made amends for a fall at Umma House seven days earlier when she opened her account in the four-year-old mares’ maiden. The Johnny Berry-trained mare had run three times on the Flat for Ray Cody, but the Phoenix Of Spain mare has taken well to her new discipline, as she defeated Faithfulocean by two and a half lengths, under the winning handler’s son Josh. “Her work had been very good, so we were hopeful,” Johnny Berry said. “She really l ove s ju mp i ng. T r i p i s n o problem and ground will be no problem either.” There will scarcely be an easier winner for the remainder of the season than Ballyglunin Lad who made all to dominate the fiveyear-old geldings’ maiden. Setting out his intentions from the drop of the flag by immediately racing to the front of the field, Dara McGill’s mount had a 15-length advantage by halfway, a lead which grew larger as the race progressed. By the line, the Adrian Murray-trained son of Feel Like Dancing had 30 lengths to spare on Canal Lock. “He’s a galloper,” Murray said. “He was in his comfort zone the whole time and he’s a relentless galloper, a bigstriding horse who gets lengths at his fences.”

Cluain Meala benefited f ro m a c o n f i d e nt B a r r y O’Neill waiting ride to open his account at the fourth time of asking Front-running tactics also proved successful for Lifetime Ambition who showed he retains his enthusiasm for the sport when winning the open for novice riders. James Sampson’s mount repeated the tactics which had proved beneficial at Castletown Geoghegan a fortnight earlier, by again making all to defeat the Portrush runner-up West Of Idaho by a comfortable length. “He still loves the game,” Jack Doyle said. “James said he was only waiting for a bit of company the whole way. He is a great old horse. He has great enthusiasm and has a brain as well; he won’t overdo himself.”

Seasonal first for Bailie Boldplay provided Paul Bailie with a first success of the campaign in the five-year-olds and upwards mares’ maiden. The six-year-old had amassed a wealth of previous placed form and the daughter of Malinas put that to good use when she outstayed Soldier Girl by two lengths under William Hamilton. “I thought that she would be close today,” the rider said. “I wasn’t expecting her to win; I was thinking we would probably finish second so I’m over the moon.”
