HE 2019 ITM Stallion Trail is the perfect time to reflect on another excellent year for Ireland’s stallions, with established names continuing to shine and a host of hot prospects announcing their arrivals with a bang.

Coolmore’s superstar Galileo was on fire once again, claiming an Oaks with Forever Together, a St Leger with Kew Gardens and further Group 1 glory with the likes of Magical, who helped him overhaul his father Sadler’s Wells’s record of 73 elite winners worldwide.

Rhododendron won a Lockinge, Waldgeist struck in

the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud and Line Of Duty added a Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf in a year that some would consider merely outstanding

by Galileo’s remarkable standards.

His half-brother, Gilltown Stud’s Sea The Stars, was in the headlines once more as his son Stradivarius landed the inaugural £1 million WH Stayers’ Million, with wins including the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot and the Goodwood Cup. Sea Of Class, meanwhile, proved herself the latest high-class filly by the sire, winning a Yorkshire Oaks and going agonisingly close to emulating Sea The Stars with

an Arc win of her own last October.

At the more affordable end of the scale, 2018 was a special one for Yeomanstown Stud’s Camacho, more of which from Peter Scargill on pages 10-11. Teppal’s French Classic glory, coupled with the fine campaign of the Group 1-placed juvenile Signora Cabello, has seen his fee increase to a new career high and should ensure a few more on the trail stop by to say hello.

However, things move quickly in this game and there will be plenty keen to get a first look at newcomers such as James Garfield and US Navy Flag, who are taking part in the trail for the first time following their retirements from the track last year.

Anngrove Stud

Location: Mountmellick, County Laois Stallions in residence: Aiken, Famous Name, Vendangeur Opening hours: 9am to 3pm, Friday, January 11 and Saturday, January 12 Stallions have been standing at Anngrove Stud since 1970 and the County Laois property has been home to the likes of Monksfield and Alderbrook, but it is not only the equine names who will be familiar to those with a keen eye on the bloodstock world.

The stud’s master is none other than Alastair Pim, the charismatic Tattersalls and Tattersalls Ireland auctioneer, and when he is not showcasing his inimitable style in the sales ring he is busy overseeing his stallion trio of Aiken, Famous Name and Vendangeur.

Famous Name is embarking on his second season at Anngrove Stud, having joined last year after five years at the Irish National Stud. The son of Dansili finished second to So You Think in the Group 1 Tattersalls Gold Cup during a fine career that brought 13 Group-race successes. His stud career has seen him produce the likes of the classy Escobar as well as Listed-placed Stage Name.

He stands oncce again alongside the Group 2 winnerr Aiken and promising jumps sire Vendangeur, who has producced the Grade 1-win nning Arzal from limitted opportunities.

Annshoon Stud

Ballintlea, Mullinavat, County Kilkenny Koropick, Proconsul 10am-4pm Once again there is a new name on the roster at Annshoon with Proconsul set to stand at the County Kilkenny operation having switched following two years at Mickley Stud in Britain.

The six-year-old raced only twice without success for Andre Fabre but his berth at stud was assured thanks to his being a brother to none other than the mighty Frankel, and therefore represents an interesting proposition for Irish breeders at a €1,250 fee.

“He’s a full-brother to a phenomenal stallion in Frankel,” said boss Michael Shefflin. “He stands at 16.2 [hands high] and gets good-looking stock who are big and strong, and although he covered Flat mares in his first two seasons we’ll be looking to target the National Hunt market with him.”

Proconsul’s studmate, Kodiac’s Koropick, boasts form tied in with the brilliant sprinter Battaash.

Sadly, Fruits Of Love will no longer form part of the trail, the stud’s former resident having died at the age of 23 due to an infection.

Arctic Tack Stud

Newbawn, Foulksmills, County Wexford Aizavoski, Arcadio, Jet Away, Ol’ Man River 9am-5pm Jumps breeders should be sure to take in Arctic Tack Stud, with a host of fascinating National Hunt sires on show.

He will stand alongside Aizavoski, who is entering his seventh year at Arctic Tack, and Arcadio, a well-supported veteran who has produced the likes of Aintree Grade 1 winner Flying Angel and the multiple Graded scorer The Game Changer.

Completing the line-up is Jet Away, a son of Cape Cross who was a Listed scorer in Britain and who took Group 3 honours on his switch to Australia.

Ballyhane Stud

Leighlinbridge, County Carlow Dandy Man, Elzaam, Prince Of Lir, Red Jazz 9am-5pm Joe Foley’s diverse stallion roster is put together with the success of breeders in mind and a warm welcome surely awaits once more as Ballyhane’s four-strong line-up goes on show.

The chief attraction is Dandy Man, whose name was in the headlines once again in 2018 courtesy of Godolphin’s La Pelosa, who bagged a Grade 1 in Canada during a wildly successful year for Charlie Appleby.

La Pelosa was the latest advertisement of Dandy Man’s ability to produce quality two-year-olds, with his 2018 crop also including Grade 2 winner River Boyne, and the Group 3 scorers My Lea and Comedy. That fine return saw his fee reach a career high of €12,500 for 2019.

At the less established end of the scale, Prince Of Lir will once again be on display. He has his first yearlings on the ground in 2019 and had a foal sell for as high as €38,000 at Goffs from a covering fee of €5,000.

Red Jazz, by Scat Daddy’s sire Johannesburg, is another of the quartet and, following 23 first-crop winners in 2017,

his talents were advertised again last year by a member of that crop, the French Group 3 scorer and Ayr Silver Cup winner Snazzy Jazzy.

Elzaam, a son of champion Australian sire Redoute’s Choice whose yearlings have sold for a high of 140,000gns and who has produced the likes of Clem Fandango.

Ballylinch Stud

One of the highlights of the weekend is the opportunity to visit the storied Ballylinch Stud, where top-class thoroughbreds have been produced since 1914 when The

Tetrarch took up stallion duties, with a tradition carried through to today by star names such as the late King’s Theatre.

A new era for Ballylinch

began with its purchase by American John Malone in 2014 and the Thomastown operation is now the home to a number of high-class stallions befitting its rich heritage.

Lope De Vega, a grandson of the late Giant’s Causeway, has a reputation that has tracked northwards for a number of years now, with his fee rising for the sixth consecutive season to a high of €80,000 after another superb year.

Newspaperofrecord won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf and could head to Europe to chase Classic honours in 2019. Meanwhile, Lope De Vega’s light continues to shine down under with the likes of Santa Ana Lane and Vega Magic scaling the heights at the elite level.

Elsewhere on the roster, hopes are high for the career of Fascinating Rock after his first foals, bred off a fee of €10,000, sold for a high of €185,000 at Goffs last year, while Classic hero New Bay, a son of the great Dubawi, also saw a warm reception for his first foals in 2018, going to a high of 80,000gns.

Make Believe, a Classic-winning grandson of Dubawi by Makfi, will see his first two-year-olds hit the track in 2019, a crop bred from a €20,000 fee in 2016. His yearlings averaged almost 40,000gns last year with a high of 280,000gns.

Wings Of Eagles, who stunned the racing world in 2017 with his Classic success, spent his first breeding season at Haras de Montaigu in Normandy but has been relocated for 2019.

Stud manager Robert McCarthy said: “He’s a Derby winner from the Montjeu sire-line and is a fine, big horse, seriously good-looking and good-actioned – just the type people in our business want to breed to.”

Wings Of Eagles’ arrival is not the only important update at The Beeches Stud in recent weeks, with Sans Frontieres having supplied his first winner when four-year-old Lomachenko won a maiden hurdle at Leicester by six lengths late last month.

The two will be on show alongside one of the great names of National Hunt breeding in Flemensfirth, whose Grade 1 roll of honour includes star names such as Imperial Commander, Flemenstar and Tidal Bay. Soldier Of Fortune, meanwhile, was the busiest sire in Britain and Ireland in 2018 for the third year in a row, the son of Galileo having covered 290 mares.

Boardsmill Stud

Trim, County Meath Califet, Court Cave, Kalanisi, Mount Nelson 10am-4.30pm Boardsmill Stud boasts an extensive history stretching back to 1935 and these days has one of the most versatile stallions available to Irish breeders in the shape of Mount Nelson.

His CV is worth recounting.

An Eclipse winner on the track, he has sired a star over hurdles in the shape of dual Cheltenham Festival hero Penhill, while Librisa Breeze took Group 1 honours on the Flat in the British Champions Sprint in 2017.

Mount Nelson’s profile has been further bolstered in 2018 courtesy of the exploits of Classic contender Quorto. He is the Godolphin star’s broodmare sire.

The stallion is on show alongside Califet, sire of high-class jumpers such as Cilaos Emery, Clarcam and Adrien Du Pont. The pair will be available for €6,000 in 2019.

Mount Nelson is not the only producer of a Cheltenham Festival winner on display here, with Kalanisi the sire of Champion Hurdle hero Katchit along with the likes of Barters Hill and leading Racing Post Arkle contender Kalashnikov.

Not to be outdone, Court Cave has been represented at jumping’s biggest week of the year by Willoughby Court, having also produced stars such as Court Minstrel and Champion Court.

Bridge House

Mullingar, County Westmeath Cappella Sansevero, Strath Burn 11am-4pm Cappella Sansevero and Strath Burn are standing under Micheál Orlandi’s Compas Equine banner, for whom 2019 is an important year with the former’s first juveniles due to hit the track.

A Group winner as a two-year-old himself, Cappella Sansevero, by the increasingly impressive Showcasing, has had yearlings sell for as much as 140,000gns and purchased by the likes of Archie Watson, which augurs well for winners if that trainer’s profile is anything to go by.

“Cappella Sansevero is a beautiful-looking son of leading young sire Showcasing who was a very consistent and talented two-year-old,” said David Redvers. “The best colt at two by his exciting sire, he looks the perfect type to sire winners in his likeness.”

Strath Burn, meanwhile, a Group 3 winner and Group 1-placed, has his first yearlings on the ground this year.

Burgage Stud

The veteran stands alongside Sea Moon, a winner of the Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot and a Group 2 at Caulfield, in Melbourne, during his racing career. The son of Beat Hollow has his first yearlings on the ground in 2019 and had a foal reach a high of €20,000 at Goffs last month, appropriately that particular foal being out of a mare by Bob Back.

Jukebox Jury completes the Burgage trio and is entering his second season at the stud, having stood the first five of his breeding career in Germany.

Castlehyde Stud

He is one of a host of household names standing here among Coolmore’s mixed Flat and jumps offering, with Excelebration having hit the heights in recent years courtesy of the excellent St James’s Palace Stakes winner Barney Roy. Footstepsinthesand, meanwhile, continues to keep his name at the forefront of breeders’ minds with Marie’s Diamond among his best performers last year.

Ruler Of The World is one of the aforementioned Derby winners to keep an eye out for but has far more than just that going for him, having produced the Group 1 Fillies’ Mile winner Iridessa in his first crop.

Starspangledbanner is enjoying a resurgence in popularity with his fertility issues now well behind him and Holy Roman Emperor continues to be represented in the biggest races on most continents.

Newcomers for 2019 are Scat Daddy’s Sioux Nation, for whom there will be high hopes given No Nay Never’s first-crop success, and Gustav Klimt, who made such an impression when winning the Superlative Stakes at two.

Clongiffen Stud

Enfield, County Meath Kuroshio, My Dream Boat, Smooth Daddy 11am-4pm More Compas Equine stallions are to be found here and plenty of breeders will have

Clongiffen on their lists due to the presence of two newcomers to the Irish stallion ranks.

The Darley-owned Kuroshio, a son of Exceed And Excel, returns to the northern hemisphere following some promising results arising from his sole stint at Overbury Stud in 2015 in a deal brokered

by Billy Jackson-Stops on behalf of client Abdulaziz Al Rabban.

“Kuroshio has had some outstanding results this year, all off the back of a very small number of average mares,” said Jackson-Stops. “His stats in the UK are what attracted us most, having produced five winners from 14 runners, all from a particularly small crop.”

Smooth Daddy is another option for breeders looking to tap into Scat Daddy blood at an affordable price. A Group 3 winner on the turf in the US, where he got the better of Time Test, Smooth Daddy’s first crop are two-year-olds in 2019.

The pair are joined here by Royal Ascot winner My Dream Boat, who stood at Bridge House Stud last year.

Coolagown Stud

Fermoy, County Cork Axxos, Carlotamix, Frozen Fire, Papal Bull, Shantaram, Zambezi Sun 10am-4pm Jumps breeders are certain to flock to David Stack’s operation during the weekend and not only to hear the boss’s quick-witted quips.

Frozen Fire, an Irish Derby winner whose oldest crop are now six-year-olds, has been represented to best effect by Frozen Flame, bought for £145,000 in 2017, while Carlotamix is the sire of French Champion Hurdle hero Gemix.

Axxos, by Monsun, has produced the talented Listed-winning hurdler Calett Mad, while Shantaram, an impeccably-bred former John Gosden inmate bred by Lady Bamford, is a son of Galileo

Where else to start other than with the best – Galileo. A true breed-shaper and one of the all-time greats, to be in his presence is remarkable.

Australia, Churchill, Gleneagles, Highland Reel and The Gurkha are as impressive a collection of stallion sons anybody could hope to see and it does not stop there.

Wrapping up the offering are a trio of high-class shuttlers from Australia, including another intriguing recruit to the Coolmore ranks in Merchant Navy, a brilliant son of Fastnet Rock who added Diamond Jubilee Stakes honours to his Group 1 haul in his native Australia. Unbeaten as a juvenile, he is also a brother to the Group 2-winning mare Jolie Bay. Fastnet Rock needs little introduction as a multiple champion sire in his native land, while Pride Of Dubai is a high-class son of the late Street Cry, most notably the great Winx’s sire.

Derrinstown Stud

Maynooth, County Kildare Awtaad, Haatef, Markaz, Tamayuz 10am-3.30pm Friday; 9.30am-noon Saturday The Irish base for Hamdan Al Maktoum’s stallions boasts significant talent of its own and 2019 is set to be a significant year for its Irish 2,000 Guineas winner Awtaad.

His first yearlings will head to the sales later this year with four of his first foals to hit the market having drawn six-figure winning bids, with a 170,000 high of 170 000gns. Awtaad is a son of the latee Cape Cross, whose stallion sons Sea The Stars and Go olden Horn have already ma ade an impact at stud.

Tamayuz was represen nted in 2018 by the likess of Joel Stakes hero M Mustashry and saw his fee boosted Sea Of Class: the duall Group 1 winner, a daughter of o Gilltown Stud’s Sea The e Stars, was only narrowly a o yb beaten in the Arc

to its current level following a fine 2017 when Precieuse and Blond Me struck for him at the highest level.

Markaz, a brother to Mecca’s Angel by Dark Angel, also has his first yearlings on the ground in 2019 and had his foals well received last year, garnering winning bids of €65,000 and 60,000gns, while the veteran Haatef completes the four-strong line-up.

Kilcullen, County Kildare Harzand, Sea The Stars 10am-4pm Friday only Gilltown Stud represents another of the special stops on the ITM Stallion Trail, presenting as it does the opportunity to get up close and personal with an all-time racing great.

Sea The Stars was a simply magnificent racehorse and his stallion career is delivering on that almighty promise in spades. Already he has nine Group 1 winners to his name and they are of the highest calibre. Stradivarius was Europe’s finest stayer in 2018 and Sea Of Class went so close to downing Enable to add an Arc to her Yorkshire Oaks win.

Previously, Taghrooda was a brilliant Oaks and King George winner, Harzand won a Derby and an Irish Derby and Sea The Moon was not only an exceptional German Derby winner but is showing great promise in the early stages of his stud career.

It is Harzand alone who will join his father in the line-up this year, his first foals having made as much as €60,000 at the Goffs November Sale. He is the only dual Group 1-winning son of Sea The Stars currently at stud.

Chasing these illustrious rivals hard was the Molecomb Stakes winner Bungle Inthejungle, a 40,000gns yearling who stood his debut season at a modest €5,000, the price he has been available for every year since then . . . until now.

Bungle Inthejungle’s first crop exploded on the scene in 2018 with 24 individual winners spearheaded by Rumble Inthejungle, who followed in his father’s footsteps by taking the Molecomb and going on to place in the Group 1 Middle Park Stakes. Those results saw the stallion’s fee more than double to €12,000 and plenty will be keen to take another look to see what they may have missed before.

The Rathasker Stud team will be daring to dream that Anjaal could follow that example. The son of Bahamian Bounty, winner of the July Stakes as a juvenile, stood his first season for €5,000.

The veteran Clodovil is at an entirely different stage of his career with the likes of Gregorian and Es Que Love on his CV and Certain Lad taking Listed honours in France in 2018 to make sure breeders continue to take note.

Banbridge, County Down Conduit 10am-4pm Friday only There may only be one stallion to see at Hugh Suffern’s stud but it is worth the trip, with the Breeders’ Cup and King George hero Conduit deserving of a second look.

Having stood at Japan’s Big Red Farm for the first six years of his career, he is now entering his fourth year at Tullyraine House Stud, meaning his oldest Irish-bred crop are two-year-olds this year.

Yeomanstown Stud

Naas, County Kildare Camacho, Dark Angel, El Kabeir, Gutaifan 10am-1pm and 2pm-4pm Friday only Last (alphabetically) but far from least, Yeomanstown Stud has plenty going on.

Dark Angel is a force to be reckoned with these days, his fee having soared from an opening €10,000 in 2008 (and a low of €7,000 in 2010 and 2011) to €85,000 in 2019, having proven himself a Group 1 producer, a sire of sires and an emerging broodmare sire of note.

Three of the world’s best sprinters in recent years, namely Battaash, Harry Angel and Mecca’s Angel, are by Dark Angel, while we also have him to thank for fan favourites like Sovereign Debt and Tip Two Win. Gutaifan is another of his talented sons and is now established alongside him at Yeomanstown Stud – all eyes will be on him as his first two-year-olds come under starter’s orders this year after his yearlings made a high of €360,000 at Goffs Orby.

Camacho, meanwhile, is resurgent and standing for a career-high fee in his 14th year at stud, with French Classic winner Teppal and Royal Ascot heroine Signora Cabello having reminded breeders of the son of Danehill’s talents.

El Kabeir, another of Scat Daddy’s sons standing in Ireland, completes the line-up.

Peter Scargill talks to David O’Callaghan of Yeomanstown Stud in Naas, County Kildare

I

T CAN be a lonely, frustrating business knowing what could be possible yet being forced to wait for the right circumstances for everyone else to appreciate it.

Since they retired him to stud in 2006, the O’Callaghan family knew they had a stallion in Camacho capable of delivering the people what they wanted. But hamstrung by small crops, it was not until last year that the beautifully-bred son of Danehill truly broke through and was finally able to increase his influence outside of those who had believed in him from the beginning.

“We always felt, and he showed even at the start, that he was capable of siring a good horse as well as plenty of fast, speedy two-year-olds,” David O’Callaghan, farm manager at his parents’ Yeomanstown Stud, says.

“His biggest problem right from the beginning was a lack of numbers on the ground. He had a reasonable first crop but then crops two, three and four were quite small.

“People saw what his first two-year-olds did, so crop five was bigger and then it dropped off again for him after that.

Finally, he has numbers and people can see that he’s a quality stallion producing quality horses across the board.”

And in terms of quality it does not come much higher than Classic success and victories at Royal Ascot, which were duly delivered by Camacho’s daughters Teppal (Poule d’Essai des Pouliches) and Signora Cabello (Queen Mary Stakes).

Teppal and Signora Cabello were sired in the immediate years after Camacho returned to Ireland from a year out on loan at Mickley Stud in Shropshire, where breeders could avail themselves of his services for a mere £2,750 in 2013.

In 2019 he will stand at his highest-ever fee of €12,000 – and he has never been more popular. Vindication, then, for those who had faith.

“There was never any doubt in our minds that he could do it, but you can’t show it until you have the numbers to back it up,” O’Callaghan, 38, says.

“We breed our own horses and we’d always be more critical of our own stallions than anybody else’s because we send them more mares than anyone else.

“So, if a stallion isn’t doing it for us then realistically they’re not going to do it for anyone else either. If they do do it for us then we stay true to them and other people will come along and appreciate them for what they’re capable of. If

Patience rewarded as veteran sire Camacho shows just what his supporters have known all along Camacho hadn’t worked with our own mares, we wouldn’t have persisted with him.”

He adds: “In Camacho, we were always able to keep the faith. He’d be near enough full this year and have more mares coming to him than any other year. It’s an exciting time for him and for us.”

Sharing a mother with one of the hottest stallions in Europe has not done Camacho any harm either. His little brother (half-brother, to be precise) Showcasing has continued to sweep all before him with Group 1 winner Advertise and Royal Ascot scorer Soldier’s Call helping to bump his fee up to £55,000 for this year, putting him out of reach of those with smaller budgets.

“One horse backs the other and they galvanise each other,” O’Callaghan points out. “It’s clear to everyone that it’s a very good female line, so if Showcasing has gone out of reach for you then here’s Camacho as his half-brother who’s capable of getting you a very talented horse at a lower

price. Showcasing has done phenomenally well and they complement each other.”

Camacho’s achievements have also allowed him to step out of the shadow of Yeomanstown colossus Dark Angel, a star name on the ITM Stallion Trail and whose expanding influence on the breed can be seen from many angles.

RILLIANT sprinter Harry Angel became his latest son to go to stud, while the likes of Battaash, Tip Two Win and Yafta flourished on the racecourse. His offspring proved as popular as ever with a yearling sale average of 140,090gns, while a new aspect of his potency came into force as damsire of the rapid pair Rumble Inthejungle, winner of the Molecomb Stakes, and Flying Five winner Havana Grey, who stands alongside Showcasing at Whitsbury Manor Stud.

and appreciation of the 14-year-old clear and crisp in his delivery. “He’s a super horse and very special to everyone here, and everyone who has been involved with him – shareholders, breeders, owners. He’s been good to everybody and continues to produce good horses.

“The biggest thing with Dark k Angel, and what makes him so o special, is that he’s not a one-trick pony. He gets two-year-olds, three-year-olds, four-year-olds, colts, fillies, mares, sprinters, stayers, jumpers – anything you could want in a horse. It’s been remarkable what he’s done.”

What Dark Angel has also done is offer stud owners a view of what is possible when a two-year-old retires to stud. It has perhaps led to some dubious imitators being taken from the course before their David O’Callaghan: “There was never any doubt in our minds that Camacho could do it, but you can’t show it until you have the numbers to back it up”

numbers front he was well represented and generally they sold well as they’re good-looking horses. They’ve ended up in good homes and he’s got every chance.

“He was a fast two-year-old and I’m sure that’s what people will be wanting from him.

They’re good, big, scopey horses and they have a lot of the Dark Angel attributes.”

If Yeomanstown were ahead of the curve when it came to the opportunities presented by retiring the right juvenile to stud, they were also acutely aware of what might be possible from Scat Daddy, whose progeny and sire sons have become such hot property in recent seasons.

With No Nay Never rocketing to €100,000 and studs scrambling to secure sons of the late stallion, Yeomanstown beat the rush by plucking the striking El Kabeir from America in 2017.

“We were lucky to get him as he was a very talented horse in America,” says O’Callaghan, deflecting any semblance of credit for the stud’s foresight.

“He has real credentials to do well as a stallion.

“He was a proper racehorse and a sale-topper too before Scat Daddy was Scat Daddy, if you get what I mean, and he’s a good-looking, desirable horse.

“He was popular last year and made a lot of sense to a lot of fellas with No Nay Never standing at €25,000 and Caravaggio at €35,000, while this lad was €8,000 with all those credentials behind him.

We’re very excited about what he might be able to do.”

ith four strong stallions on paper as well as a robust consigning and breeding operation, Yeomanstown may be better placed than others to weather some of the storms lingering over the bloodstock world.

Nevertheless, O’Callaghan is ensuring the stud remains focused and says: “A lot of the things going on are out of our control, so we have to focus on

what is under our control and keep producing good-looking horses with good pedigrees. If you’re producing nice stock with a bit of pedigree, then you’ll sell them.

“You have to have horses who are desirable to buy and the market is tougher than ever on those lesser horses who in other years you might have sold at a loss whereas last year you couldn’t sell at all.”

He adds: “People talk about overproduction but that generally sorts itself out pretty quickly because of market factors. People need to be incentivised to buy horses.

“A helluva lot of time and effort goes into creating schemes and what have you, but the one scheme that will change British racing for the good is improved prize-money.

“If all the energy that went into everything else went into improving prize-money then every other market works.

There’s money to be made and there’s people to enjoy the sport if they feel they can be rewarded for what they do.”
