Welcome to the essential autumnal sales digest

I

F YOU’VE had trouble keeping up with all the date and venue changes for the sales since racing resumed in June, join the club.

Last year our Autumn Yearlings supplement included Tattersalls Ireland, but this time round we are focusing on the Goffs Sportsman’s, Goffs Orby and Tattersalls October auctions.

The two Goffs sales will be held in Doncaster at the Goffs UK complex, with a five-day gap.

The reason for the flagship Orby sale move to the end of the month is to allow buyers who wanted to participate in Books 1 and 2 at Keeneland the chance to self-isolate before going to Doncaster – as for the Sportman’s, its detachment from the Orby arguably provides yearlings concerned with better exposure.

What happens at the Orby and Book 1 of Tattersalls October will likely define how the British and Irish yearling sales will be remembered in this unprecedented Covid-19 impacted year.

Neither will fail, if that’s the right word – comparisons with previous years are more or less meaningless – for want of fantastic youngstock.

Wherever you look there are choice lots in catalogues to pore over.

The big unknown is what buyers are prepared to spend. The BBAG sale and Arqana offered hope that the best horses will still command six- or even seven-figure sums, which delights headline writers but does not mean that all levels of trade are robust.

It can only be hoped that all breeders who have poured blood, sweat and tears (and money) into this season’s offerings get something back they are satisfied with.

The sales in a nutshell

A

is for American buyers Buyers from the US have been a growing force at Europe’s premier yearling sales in recent times and it will be intriguing to see if the key players participate with the same gusto this autumn. Front and centre among the US buyers is agent Mike Ryan, who signed for 24 lots for a variety of clients at a total of 6,205,000gns at Book 1 last year.

is for Books 1, 2, 3 and 4 The four sections of Tattersalls’ flagship October Yearling Sale have catalogued 2,038 of the world’s most sought after young thoroughbreds who will come under the hammer in Newmarket over nine sessions of selling. Last year the four books brought a whopping 158,155,600gns in turnover as 1,502 yearlings changed hands.

is for clearance rate There is no shying away from the challenges facing the industry this year, as markets have plainly felt the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. However, clearance

rates across the major summer auctions should be a source of some optimism, as the Goffs UK Premier Sale saw 338 lots sell at 84 per cent, Tattersalls Ascot saw 203 lots sell at 81 per cent, while Arqana sold 309 yearlings at a clip of 74 per cent.

is for Doncaster The South Yorkshire town has become synonymous with Goffs UK’s famed Premier Yearling Sale, but this year will break new ground when it plays host to the Goffs Orby and Sportsman’s sales, which have been switched from the iconic Kildare Paddocks venue in Ireland. The change means that 1,283 well-credentialed yearlings have been catalogued to be sold in Doncaster this year.

is for emerging forces Each sales season provides a chance for rising forces to try to break into the top echelons of the bloodstock game and it will be fascinating to see who steps up this year. In 2019, Georg Von Opel’s Westerberg made a splash when signing for the €3 million top lot at

Goffs with MV Magnier, while at Arqana this year Oliver St Lawrence went to €2.5m for the top lot on behalf of a new partnership including Sheikh Nasser Al Khalifa and KHK Racing.

F

is for first-crop sires A strong class of first-crop sires will be represented at the upcoming sales, including the likes of Aclaim, Caravaggio, Churchill, Highland Reel, Postponed, Profitable, Ribchester and Time Test. The reception these up-and-comers get will make for an intriguing subplot to the sales season.

is for Green Room Vimal and Gillian Khosla’s remarkable broodmare has played a leading role at recent editions of the Goffs Orby Sale, with her progeny having grossed €8.88m at Goffs alone.

She has already produced three elite winners, namely Lord Shanakill and the sisters Together Forever and Forever Together, and all eyes will be on her Sea The Stars filly when she is offered by Ballylinch Stud as lot 176 this year.

H

is for Hazelwood Bloodstock Adrian O’Brien’s operation has made a major impact at the last two October Sales, having sold the top lot at Book 1 in 2019, the 3,600,000gns Dubawi halfbrother to Barney Roy, and the Book 2 top lot, the 750,000gns King Leonidas, 12 months earlier. Hazelwood has six lots in this year’s Book 1 by the likes of Frankel, Lope De Vega and War Front, and three more in Book 2.

is for Kingman The son of Invincible Spirit has quickly found his place among the stallion ranks elite, and has 20 lots due to go under the hammer at Book 1, seven during Book 2 and six at the Orby Sale. These include a half-brother to 2,000 Guineas hero Galileo Gold (lot 174 at Book 1) and a half-brother to Miss Yoda (291 at the Orby).

is for internet bidding Ongoing travel restrictions mean plenty of sale regulars won’t be able to attend this year’s auctions in person, but both Goffs and Tattersalls have stepped up their online bidding platforms. is for Lope De Vega The Ballylinch Stud sire continues to go from strength to strength and his latest crop of yearlings ought to be his best yet as they were bred in the year his fee rose to €60,000. He has 37 lots in Book 1, including a colt out of Great Heavens, and 15 lots at the Orby, featuring a sister to Antonia De Vega.

is for Newsells Park Stud One of the world’s most successful commercial farms sends a 25-strong draft to Book 1 this year, including relations to Group 1 winners such as Danedream, Enable, Mogul and Qualify. Newsells have topped the Book 1 consignors’ charts for the last two years, selling 16 yearlings for 6,590,000gns in 2019 and 18 for a huge 11,055,000gns in 2018.

is for opportunities Although a drop in yearling prices is not good news for the industry as a whole, those prepared to take advantage

may just be rewarded with a bargain that would, under normal circumstances, prove beyond their budget and there will doubtless be a whole host of success stories to emerge, whatever the strength of trade proves to be.

is for protocols Auction houses have gone to great lengths to ensure this year’s sales take place, and buyers and sellers alike need to do their bit to ensure the show remains on the road by following the various safety guidelines.

These range from completing pre-sale medical forms, wearing a mask while on the sales ground and observing social distancing once inside the rings in Doncaster and Newmarket.

is for Que Suerte Sea The Moon’s popularity shows no signs of abating, and with good

reason having sired the likes of Alpine Star. His rise and rise should ensure the already named Que Suerte, a sister to the Group 2-winning Quest The Moon, has her share of admirers when offered by Stauffenberg Bloodstock at Book 2.

is for resale Traders will be hoping to strike gold when lots they pinhooked as foals reappear on the yearling market. Among the many punchy pinhooks on offer are the 440,000gns Invincible Spirit sister to Music Box and Ektihaam (offered by Mount Coote Stud as lot at 274 at Book 1) and the 350,000gns Sea The Stars relation to Golden Horn consigned by Baroda Stud (lot 172 at the Orby).

is for Shastye Few mares have made the sales ring their own quite like Newsells Park

Stud’s Shastye has, with the daughter of Danehill’s Book 1 offerings having fetched a combined 10.8m gns. A Galileo filly out of the mighty mare, and therefore a sister to Group 1 winners Japan and Mogul, looks set to be among the stars of this year’s edition when she is offered as lot 436.

is for Tattersalls The sales company was founded by Richard Tattersall in 1766, and has journeyed from Hyde Park Corner to Knightsbridge Green then Doncaster before setting up base in Newmarket. The iconic sales ring has been in operation since 1965 and has since played host to numerous record sales. Will the history books be rewritten again in 2020?

is for updates A packed racing schedule means plenty of pedigrees will be being

enhanced, sometimes significantly so, in the run up to the sales. Among the yearlings with the biggest updates include lot 55 at Book 1, whose half-brother Palace Pier landed the Prix Jacques le Marois, while lot 240 at the Orby is an El Kabier half-sister to the Group 2-winning juvenile Fev Rover.

is for videos Vendors will be utilising everything at their disposal to help them advertise their yearlings ahead of a date with the auctioneer, and videos on social media and sales company websites will have a major part to play.

is for Xaaria This French-bred filly will be the first lot into the ring at the prestigious Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Sale when offered by Haras de Colleville. The 547lot catalogue features siblings to 53 Group 1 scorers and the progeny of a further 20 top level-winning mares.

is for yearlings A four-figure number of young thoroughbreds will be sold over the coming weeks, with 2,048 lots entered across the October Sales, 474 catalogued for the Orby Sale and 385 in the Sportsman’s.

is for Zhang Yuesheng The head of Yulong Investments has been a major supporter of Irish racing and breeding in recent years, and struck gold when his chief talent spotter Michael Donohoe of BBA Ireland secured Group 1 Phoenix Stakes winner Lucky Vega for €175,000 from Baroda Stud at last year’s Orby Sale.

5 bb h Dandy Man ex Clytha (Mark Of Esteem) Sold by Ballyhane Stud Bought by Aidan O’Ryan/ Gordon Elliott for ₏65,000 in 2016 Ballyhane pinhooked this son of Dandy Man, paying ₏20,000 for him at the Goffs November Foal Sale in 2015 before reselling a year later to Aidan O’Ryan and Gordon Elliott for ₏65,000.

Out of the unraced Mark Of Esteem mare Clytha, River Boyne was initially trained by Elliott before switching to the US towards the end of his juvenile season.

In the care of Jeff Mullins, he won two Grade 2s before producing a career-best in March to deny Got Stormy in the Grade 1 Frank E Kilroe Mile Stakes.

The third top-level scorer for Ballyhane Stud’s stalwart Dandy Man, the five-year-old is a half-brother to four winners including the useful Bahamian Bounty gelding Harame.

River Boyne’s half-sister, a filly by Divine Prophet, is available as lot 560 in the Tara Stud draft at the Sportsman’s Sale this year.

Sir Dancealot

6 b g Sir Prancealot ex Majesty’s Dancer (Danehill Dancer) Sold by The Forge Stables Bought by Joanne Morgan/Kevin Quinn for ₏30,000 in 2015 David Elsworth’s popular gelding, a dual winner of the Group 2 Lennox Stakes at Goodwood, has proven to be excellent value for money over the past five seasons.

Sold for ₏15,000 at Goffs’ November Foal Sale, he was then presented at the Sportsman’s Sale by The Forge Stables, where he was snapped up for ₏30,000 by Joanne Morgan and Kevin Quinn. The gelding has struck six times in Pattern company, including in four Grade 2 contests.

Sir Dancealot is from the first crop of Sir Prancealot, a stallion who spent his first five seasons at Tally-Ho Stud before transferring to Cornerstone Stud in Australia three years ago.

With the likes of Beau Recall and Madam Dancealot making a significant impact in the US, a deal was reached between Cornerstone and Checkmate Thoroughbreds to shuttle the now ten-year-old.

He is due to return to Rancho San Miguel in California next year.

Sir Prancealot was provided with another recent Group winner in Britain when Miss Amulet landed the Lowther Stakes at York.

One Voice

3 b f Poet’s Voice ex Zaaqya (Nayef) Sold by Kilmoney Cottage Stud Bought by BBA Ireland for ₏55,000 in 2018 Jessica Harrington has

a wealth of talent when it comes to three-year-old fillies, and this daughter of the illfated Poet’s Voice has blossomed with every run this year.

Consigned by Ballyogue Stud from Kilmoney Cottage Stud, the half-sister to threetime winner Cross My Mind made â‚Ź55,000 to BBA Ireland in 2018, advertising the prowess of BBA Ireland and Harrington combined.

The winner of a Leopardstown maiden at two, One Voice was narrowly denied on her return in a Listed contest at Navan before securing that all-important black-type win in the Blue Wind Stakes, beating Snow, a sister to St Leger hero Kew Gardens, into second.

Two Group 1 placings have followed; first she finished a neck second behind French Oaks heroine Fancy Blue in the Nassau Stakes, and was then a respectable third to Love in the Yorkshire Oaks.

Out of the three-time winning Nayef mare Zaaqya, One Voice hails from one of the final crops of Poet’s Voice, a Group 1 winner for Godolphin and sire of King George winner Poet’s Word.

Out of the unraced Gift Dancer, she is a half-sibling to the Australian Group 2 winner Sixties Groove, who also finished third in the Group 1 Doomben Cup. Further back in her pedigree, she is related to Irish 1,000 Guineas winner Samitar and Group 3 scorer Danon Chaser.

Lot 712 ch f Bated Breath-Mary McPhee (Makfi) Consigned by Irish National Stud Out of the winning Makfi mare Mary McPhee, this chestnut filly could be a valuable asset both on the track and as a broodmare prospect.

By Bated Breath, who has continued to bolster his reputation with the likes of Cairn Gorm and Breathtaking Look this season, the filly is a half-sister to Sussex Gardens, a winner on debut at Naas in June and second behind the

talented Mother Earth in a Group 3 at the same track.

Looking further back in the pedigree, the filly hails from the family of the wonderful Attraction, the Classic winner and dam of Group 2 winner and Juddmonte International third Elarqam.

4 b f Nathaniel ex Love Magic (Dansili) Sold by Kilcarn Stud Bought privately by Meridian International for €18,000 in 2017 As well as being the breeder and foal vendor of Lucky Vega (another of our super six, below), Kilcarn Stud also consigned Classic heroine Channel through its Orby draft. The daughter of Nathaniel was bought privately

by Meridian International for €18,000, and she was later resold by Mayfield Stables to Bertrand Le Metayer for €70,000 at the Arqana BreezeUp Sale.

Channel raced six times as a three-year-old and brought up a hat-trick that culminated with a win in the Prix de Diane.

Channel was bred by Kilcarn Stud out of the Dansili mare Love Magic, a winning daughter of the Cheveley Park Stakes scorer Magical Romance, who in turn is a closely related sister to champion racemare Alexandrova.

Six high-profile graduates to have passed through the Orby Sale

Forever Together

5 b m Galileo ex Green Room (Theatrical) Sold by Ballylinch Stud Bought by MV Magnier for €900,000 in 2016 The Theatrical mare Green Room has become synonymous with the Orby Sale, where her progeny have sold for a combined €8.88 million to date, including the €900,000 paid by MV Magnier for her Galileo daughter Forever Together.

The filly showed promise in two mile maidens as a juvenile and was second in the Cheshire Oaks on her seasonal reappearance at three. She then ran out a commanding winner of the Oaks at Epsom, posting a career-best Racing Post Rating of 117. She ran twice more at the highest level, running second to Urban Fox in the Pretty Polly Stakes and to Sea Of Class in the Irish Oaks.

Forever Together is one of three top-flight winners for her dam along with Lord Shanakill and Together Forever, while Green Room has also produced the Listed-placed Do You Love Me. Green Room’s owners Vimal and Gillian Khosla consign through Ballylinch Stud, who will present her Sea The Stars yearling filly for sale this year.

Lucky Vega

2 b c Lope De Vega ex Queen Of Carthage (Cape Cross) Sold by Baroda Stud Bought by BBA Ireland/Yulong Investments for €175,000 in 2019 This year’s star on the catalogue cover is Lucky Vega, who was sold by Baroda Stud to Michael Donohoe of BBA Ireland and Zhang Yuesheng of Yulong Investments for €175,000 last year.

The two-year-old Lope De Vega colt opened his account in a Naas maiden in June, when he had the subsequent

Chesham and Vintage Stakes scorer Battleground in arrears, and progressed to win the Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh.

He then finished fifth in the National Stakes, and holds Group 1 entries at Newmarket.

Lucky Vega was first offered at Goffs as a foal when sold by his breeder Kilcarn Stud to Michael Roy for €110,000.

He is out of the Cape Cross mare Queen Of Carthage, an unraced daughter of the Prix de l’Opera heroine Satwa Queen, and also shares his

page with Group 1 juvenile winner and sire Spadoun.

Queen Supreme

4 ch f Exceed And Excel ex Call Later (Gone West) Sold by Monksland Stables Bought by Form BS/Mayfair Speculators for €130,000 in 2017 The Orby Sale is enhanced by an international buying bench each year with Queen Supreme having caught the eye of Jehan Malherbe of Form Bloodstock in South Africa, who signed for the filly for

€130,000 from Monksland Stables in 2017.

The daughter of Exceed And Excel is trained by Mike de Kock for a partnership led by Jessica Slack’s Mauritzfontein Stud and has struck up an excellent race record with five wins including the Grade 1 Paddock Stakes.

Tom Hassett of Monksland Stables bred Queen Supreme out of the Gone West mare Call Later, who also has a yearling filly by Caravaggio.

The half-sister to multiple

Grade 1 winner Ventura has three stakes winners to her name, with Call Me Handsome and Be Ready also striking in Listed company.

Raging Bull

5 b h Dark Angel ex Rose Bonheur (Mr Greeley) Sold by The Castlebridge Consignment Bought by E Columbo Agency for €90,000 in 2016 Raging Bull is another Orby graduate who has shone on the international stage. The

son of Dark Angel was offered as part of the Wildenstein dispersal in 2016 and was signed for by E Columbo Agency for €90,000.

Trained in the US by Chad Brown for owner Peter Brant, Raging Bull has struck twice at the highest level, having landed the Hollywood Derby at three and the Shoemaker Mile Stakes as a five-year-old this season.

OU know you are dealing with an architect of change within the bloodstock community when the remaining 16 pages of a pocket diary are exhausted during what was meant to have been a brief interview.

At a time when Covid-19 truncated the racing calendar and affected all areas of our industry, this person instead recognised the opportunity lockdown presented and ran with it.

Jack Cantillon, in tandem with parents Dermot and Meta, present their draft to the Goffs Orby sale next week under the garlanded Tinnakill House banner.

Perennial consignors to this sale, the County Laois-based operation supports a domestic broodmare band north of 40 mares, and having accrued Group 1 victories with now stallion Casamento, Red Evie and Alexander Goldrun.

Lot 279 of their Goffs Orby consignment is from one of this season’s first-yearling sires, a filly by Ribchester from a stout Aga Khan damline.

“It is fitting as Ribchester himself was a Goffs Orby sale graduate, and the filly is a gorgeous, good-looking physical,” says Cantillon.

“She’s been a straightforward character throughout her prep. We bought the dam Marque Royale from the Aga Khan Studs, and her half-sister produced Blue Bunting [the 1,000 Guineas, Irish Oaks and Yorkshire Oaks winner].

Marque Royale herself won and placed over a mile.”

Ribchester’s own Goffs Orby yearling receipt of €105,000 in 2014 signposted his worth; he went on to have a multiple Group 1-winning miler career, and shared first-yearling crop attention with fellow Dalham Hall compatriot Postponed.

On the distaff line, pedigree

researchers will be no stranger to the profusion of quality from Aga Khan broodmare culls.

Such sales of dams have rewarded their purchaserbreeders with the likes of High Chaparral, Arcano, bred-inthe-purple racemare and producer Dar Re Mi, along with her own half-brother Rewilding.

Lot 158 is by Decorated Knight out of a Dubawi mare, with Middle Park runner-up and stallion Sayif further down the page.

“This filly is one to kick on with – she has kept improving and has that swing of a walk,” says Cantillon, relaying confidence in both sire and the stud that stand him.

“Cathal Beale has done a tremendous job at the Irish National Stud. The increase to the book sizes is fantastic news, and Decorated Knight is a stallion with a tune.”

Asked what else should attract interest, Cantillon identifies lot 364 as one to bookmark. The filly is by Australia, who had his first Group 1 winner in this month’s St Leger via Galileo Chrome.

“We bred both [her dam] Repose and her colt State Of Rest [by Starspangledbanner],” Cantillon points out. “He was fifth in the Group 3 Tyro Stakes, and then third in the Group 2 Champagne Stakes, continuing to show potential to improve.”

Among the colts on offer, lot 389 is a Golden Horn out of the Street Cry mare Sequined.

From the family of champion German three-year-old filly Filia Ardross, Cantillon suggests this is the standout colt within their consignment.

He adds: “Sequined is a gorgeous mare, a Darley-bred, and we are delighted that she scanned in-foal to Siyouni this year.”

Damsire Street Cry amassed European success as a broodmare sire with Group 1

Moyglare Stud Stakes-winning filly Skitter Scatter, while Spanish Mission claimed recent Group 2 honours in the Doncaster Cup. Cantillon has had plenty besides youngstock to keep him occupied in a year ravaged by Covid-19, and he did his bit during the shutdown in terms of activities to keep bloodstock professionals and enthusiasts alike entertained.

Racing, he has attempted to remove the mystique surrounding pedigrees by presenting ‘The Art of Mating’ series of interactive seminars with expert panels, appealing to both lay and educated audiences, even encouraging its participants to submit pedigree ‘homework’.

“It’s all about being reactive to what is happening,” he explains. “Communication is key and we have to strive to provide an unbeatable level of service to existing owners, as well as acquiring new ones.

We’re grateful to have them, and it’s about including them in every step of the process.

“WhatsApp states that its maximum members to a group is 256, and we had received just over 100 to ours by the end of the first day of our online launch for Syndicates.Racing.”

The young lawyer’s latest project is the #FastFillies syndicate, which will hopefully do what it says on the tin.

With opportunities for fillies and mares now vastly enhanced after much raceplanning and bonus initiative focus, and it being a good time to buy at the sales for those able to indulge, Cantillon feels the time is right for such a move.

He says: “We’ve launched our #FastFillies syndicate to find athletic fillies with proven pedigrees. While it might not feel it at the moment, Covid will end, but proven pedigrees will always be there.

“There is going to be unprecedented value in the coming weeks, and in many ways it’s the time to get stuck in. For a few hundred euros you can buy shares with us and we’ve already over 200 in the WhatsApp group wanting to buy.

“As we all know, talent is contagious in a good family, so that’s what we’re out to catch, rather than our current enemy!”

Cantillon is full of praise for the network of individuals, organisations and policymakers that keep the bloodstock industry ticking over, especially in troubled times such as these, while acknowledging that many would not have had the leg-up he did.

“I’m conscious of the family I was born into, and the headstart that comes with that,” he says. “Syndicates.Racing is one of the ways I can give back and help to nurture the next generation of racing fans.

The appointment, meanwhile, of fellow Godolphin Flying Start graduate John Bourke, as racing and bloodstock director at Syndicates.Racing, illustrates a desire to source the very best minds to deliver the product.

As for an example of things that could help to improve the syndicate experience, Cantillon cites the recent sales race at Naas, saying: “The concept that Joe Foley produced with the Irish EBF Ballyhane Stakes was a dynamic idea.”

The new event was aimed at the progeny of sires with a median of no more than €75,000 at the 2019 yearling sales, and drew much praise from stud masters and trainers alike.

The race value of €320,000 – with €150,000 to the winner, and prize-money paid to all 20 runners, with connections of the final five horses to finish each receiving €2,000 – prompted comment that it would shape buying decisions

in future. The aforementioned State Of Rest finished fourth in the inaugural race, won by Ballydoyle’s Chief Little Hawk.

“It’s the type of race I’d like to see rolled out for syndicated runners,” says Cantillon. “It would create opportunities and incentivise sign-up to our ownership type, to be part of the fun.”

Given the wide-ranging buying policies that differ from horseman to horsewoman, are there any rules that Cantillon swears by?

He answers: “‘Thou shalt buy a black-type mare’ is a phrase we had drilled into us as young children. Every time you buy a horse, you buy into the page, the dream, but the level of service, communication and enjoyment is something we can control, and enfranchise horseracing fans into the experience.

“However, we can’t do this without everyone working together – huge credit has to go to the likes of the Goffs’ team for putting on these sales.”

Campanelle the latest highlight on a rich roster of talent from Tattersalls Blue Point

6 b h Shamardal ex Scarlet Rose (Royal Applause) Sold by West Moor Stud Bought by John Ferguson for 200,000gns in 2015 Book 1 was not the first time Blue Point had been to Tattersalls – he was bought for 110,000gns by the Sigsworth family’s West Moor Stud from Linda and Reddy Coffey’s Oak Lodge & Springfield House Stud as a pinhook the previous winter.

Moved to Charlie Appleby’s care, he was among the best juveniles of his crop, winning the Gimcrack and placing in the Middle Park and Dewhurst, before a three-yearold season which ignited his love affair with Ascot – he won two Group 3s and ran third to Caravaggio and Harry Angel in an epic Commonwealth Cup. As an older horse, this brooding muscular individual became a four-time Group 1 star and one of the best sprinters of recent times, joining Kildangan Stud when signing off in last year’s July Cup having followed in the hallowed hoofprints of Choisir in completing the King’s Stand-Diamond Jubilee double at the royal meeting.

2 b f Kodiac ex Janina (Namid) Sold by Tally-Ho Stud Bought by Ben McElroy for 190,000gns in 2019 This filly has clocked up the miles already, travelling to Newmarket from breeders Tally-Ho Stud in Ireland and then heading across the Atlantic to Wesley Ward’s stable, making a successful debut for owner Stonestreet Stables in a maiden at Gulfstream Park in late May. Just three weeks later, she had flown to Ascot to continue Ward’s love affair with the royal meeting, running down Sacred in the Queen Mary Stakes.

Most recently Campanelle was seen at Deauville, becoming a Group 1 winner under Frankie Dettori in the Prix Morny, and Ward is not ruling out a tilt at the 1,000 Guineas with this daughter of a well-related Listed winner for Barry Hills.

Bred by Allan Belshaw from a family of horses with the Times suffix that he has nurtured for many years, Newspaperofrecord had a stop-start time at three but was back in the Group 1 swing earlier this year in the Just A Game Stakes at Belmont.

Palace Pier

3 b c Kingman ex Beach Frolic (Nayef) Sold by Highclere Stud Bought by John Gosden for 600,000gns in 2018 The progeny of Beach Frolic, an unraced half-sister to Group winners Bonfire and Joviality, have always sold well, but Palace Pier has eclipsed the exploits of two older siblings in every possible way.

Consigned by Highclere in a partnership with the late Duke Of Roxburghe’s Floors Farming, he proved a big hit as a son of Kingman and has now jumped to the head of his indemand sire’s impressive CV. He has not put a foot wrong, making light work of two Sandown juvenile events before perhaps being the handicap certainty of all-time at Newcastle as he went on to Group 1 victories in this year’s St James’s Palace and Jacques le Marois. His half-brother by Highland Reel is for sale this October.

Phoenix Of Spain

4 gr c Lope De Vega ex Lucky Clio (Key Of Luck) Sold by Kilminfoyle House Stud Bought by Howson & Houldsworth Bloodstock for 220,000gns in 2017 Bred out of Cherry Faeste’s wonderful mare Lucky Clio, who produced a succession of winners including the smart sprinter Lucky Beggar, the grey was a pinhook from Kilminfoyle House Stud and transferred into the care of Tony Wechsler and Ann Plummer.

After the low-key start of a Wolverhampton maiden, Phoenix Of Spain went on to win the Acomb at York and chase home two notable stars

in Too Darn Hot in the Champagne Stakes and Magna Grecia in the Vertem Futurity.

The following season was to see one of Charlie Hills’ finest performances as a trainer as Phoenix Of Spain won the Irish Guineas on his reappearance, sealing a career as a stallion at the Irish National Stud.

Russian Camelot

He was the first northern hemisphere horse to oblige in a reported 852 Derbies to have been run in Australia since 1855 and is now one of the most exciting prospects for the Spring Carnival.

Lot 112 B c Dubawi-Danedream (Lomitas) Consigned by Newsells Park Stud Dubawi produced the top lot at Arqana when the filly out of Starlet’s Sister sold for €2.5 million, and this colt is another who could command a hefty price.

Danedream needs very little introduction having struck in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes and the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe during a stellar racing career. She has produced one winner so far in the form of Faylaq, while her two-year-old Frankel filly has yet to race.

This colt is also related to the likes of Group 2 winner Venice Beach, also third in the Grand Prix de Paris, and the Group 3-winning Broadway.

B f Zoffany-Entreat (Pivotal) Consigned by Highclere Stud Here is a pedigree that has been updated consistently this year, with Golden Horde’s Commonwealth Cup success and Line Of Departure’s recent win in a valuable sales race at Doncaster’s St Leger meeting.

By Zoffany, who has gone from strength to strength this term, this filly is also related to Pipalong Stakes scorer Exhort, while there is plenty of depth further back in the family, with US champion filly Serena’s Song and Coronation Stakes heroine Sophisticat on the page.

Lot 162 B f Frankel-Fleche D’Or (Dubai Destination) Consigned by Norelands Stud A half-sister to the 2015 Derby and Arc hero Golden Horn, this filly is another lot who holds immense value both as a racing prospect and as a broodmare.

Her full-brother is last year’s second most expensive lot in Dhahabi, who won on debut at Newmarket before finishing second in the Denford Stakes for Godolphin and Charlie Appleby. His trainer stated that the colt was very much a three-year-old prospect, and it could be the case for this filly too who can boast Royal Ascot winner Rebecca Sharp and Miss Pinkerton among her relations.

Lot 178 B c Galileo-Ghurra (War Chant) Consigned by Castlefarm Stud Galileo’s affinity with speedier mares is well known and this lot offered by Castlefarm Stud is a half-brother to the exceptionally fast Shalaa.

The Invincible Spirit colt dominated his peers with wins in the Middle Park Stakes, Prix Morny and July Stakes in a stellar juvenile campaign in 2015, before striking in the Bengough Stakes at three after a truncated season. He has produced ten individual winners from his first crop.

Ghurra herself was placed in Graded company, while she can also count Middle Park winner Hayil and the Grade 2-placed Zifzaf among her immediate relations.

Maturing and balance the key words for Book 1 leading consignor JULIAN DOLLAR Tom Peacock with the general manager at Newsells Park

EWSELLS PARK STUD has been the leading consignor at Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale for the last two years and among the top three throughout the last decade.

Although the Hertfordshire operation has a history with thoroughbreds stretching back more than a century, including being the birthplace of 1959 Derby winner Parthia, it was only by the millennium that the Jacobs family arrived to steward its genesis as a commercial farm.

“Probably the one word I’d use is maturing,” says general manager Julian Dollar.

“Half the farm was established and the other half was an arable farm that was put down to grass in the early 2000s. That takes a long time to mature; we did tweak some things with how we used the land, the feeding and so on.

“When you’re trying to fill a 1,200-acre stud farm instantly, you go out and buy a lot of mares. You can’t buy success that way – you’ve got to start somewhere – but you then have to fine-tune things.”

Dollar, who had previously run Castleton Lyons Farm in America and assisted at Cheveley Park, was primarily recruited in 2006 to develop a stallion station, which began with Mount Nelson and continues with Equiano and Nathaniel today. But its female families have been the

dominant force, headed by Shastye, whose progeny include the consecutive Grand Prix de Paris winners Japan and Mogul. They are the result of an extensive process of equine recruitment and dismissal.

“There are probably only two mares still on the place that were part of that initial draft that were bought in the early 2000s,” reveals Dollar.

“Waldmark (dam of Leger hero Masked Marvel and granddam of Arc winner Waldgeist) is one, she was one of the first horses that Mr [Klaus] Jacobs ever bought with a line to Newsells Park, and she’s still here. Flawly is another but there are very few, the pedigrees of the mares has changed a little bit.”

He continues: “We tried to finesse the families and keep hold of a few fillies here and there where we could, but ultimately we are a commercial operation. I’m sure if Klaus Jacobs was still alive – he died 12 years ago – he’d be racing a lot more horses and buying a lot more horses, but we’ve had to wash

our faces since he passed away, with the overheads that come with the farm meaning we’ve had to do things slightly differently.

“It does mean we’ve had to sell lovely yearling fillies in the past, but sometimes people don’t want to buy them, we’ve raced them and that’s been fine for us too, as was the case with [Shastye’s daughter[ Secret Gesture.”

Developing a sequence of good racehorses – and salestoppers – seems to be about finding a balance between having patience and knowing when to draw stumps on an unproductive broodmare.

“The culling process of a broodmare band is, I think, almost as important as the purchasing,” says Dollar. “We make mistakes, people always tell me it’s a good sign when you start making mistakes, so I take some comfort in that! You can sell things a bit soon that go on to become Group winners that you miss out on, but that’s part of life.

“I think we’ve probably been guilty of selling too many yearling daughters; knowing a family, the traits, the distances, placing them with trainers to suit, is a massive advantage.

“It’s one of the reasons why the great owner-breeder operations are successful, but you can’t do both.

“I do sometimes think if I’m in doubt I should give the mare another year; sometimes you try to get ahead of the curve, sometimes we plainly cash out.

“We did that with Hazariya after Harzand won the Derby, but there have been plenty of times when I’ve had egg on my face from selling one too early.”

HE team has also adopted another different strategy, as Dollar outlines, explaining: “We reduced our own number of broodmares but we took on permanent boarders, and have a wonderful client base who are a pleasure to work with.

We’ve had some success with the likes of Without Parole, who was bred here for the Gunthers, which was a privilege and a pleasure when he won at Royal Ascot.

“That’s another way of being commercial, but with the exception of Gestut Fahrhof, which are horses bred by [Klaus’ son] Andreas Jacobs, we don’t really sell anything else that hasn’t been brought up on the farm.

“That way, when people come to see me, I know their history from the moment they were born and I can tell them all about them, which I think is

important. Also for us, in a way, I know it’s a cliche, but yearling prep starts from the moment they’re born, we’re looking at them as sales animals from the get-go.”

Covid-19 has provided worries, as in every industry, and the state of trade at Tattersalls will be for fate to decide. This year Newsells have widened their shop window with a particular effort in developing its website to showcase the yearling offerings.

“We’ve got photos and videos of the Book 1 horses and we will probably do our own ones for Book 2,” says Dollar. “It all sounds great in theory but actually it’s a huge

amount of work, especially when you’re trying to work, groom them, show them to people, take x-rays, scoping, having the first set of shoes put on by the farrier.

“I wake up at 5.30 every morning and all I’m thinking about is yearlings, for some bizarre reason!

“But when Covid came in, Inglis had to have a sale online in Australia and the simple fact of the matter is the horses that the agents had been able to see on the farm sold better than the ones that they didn’t.

Like everyone, we’ve been doing more shows, and we want to make it easy for someone to get a feel for one of the yearlings.”

‘She’s the nicest of fillies’ NEWSELLS PARK will consign 25 yearlings at Book 1 headed by the latest Galileo daughter of Shastye (lot 436), with Mogul’s success adding even more lustre to a broodmare who has earned her owners more than £11 million in sales already.

“I have mixed emotions about selling her but we’ll have to see what happens,” says Dollar. “All of her progeny have been pretty similar and I think she’s the nicest of the fillies.”

There is also a Sea The Stars half-brother to Masked Marvel (518) as an obvious highlight.

“Waldmark is quite an old

mare and there were five years where we couldn’t get a foal out of her, but she seems to have saved up her energy for this one – he’s lovely,” says Dollar.

“One of her daughters, Waldnah, a stakes winner, has also got a Le Havre colt (519) and he’s very nice.”

Dollar is also offering a “big and powerful” Dubawi-sired son of Danedream (112), the German-trained Arc and King George winner who is still to really make her mark as a broodmare, along with another Dubawi from the more established but late mare Perihelion, dam of Oaks scorer Qualify (356).

Dollar says: “We bought the mare [Perihelion[ privately a few years ago but sadly last year we lost her after she foaled this one. He’s very nice and a typical Dubawi, a slightly butty, powerful sort with a lot of quality.”

He also mentions several Frankels to watch at the auction – one from the family of Quarter Moon and Yesterday who is a half-sister to the dam of Eminent (36), and another out of a sister to Enable, Birdwood (62), who was bought a few years ago from the December Sales.
