fter record-breaking results at Arqana, Tattersalls Ascot, Goffs UK, BBAG and Osarus, those behind upcoming sales at Tattersalls Ireland, at Goffs, for the Orby and Sportsman’s auctions, and in Newmarket, where Tattersalls Book 1 kicks off on October 8, will be hoping for more of the same.

At least as far as big-buy headlines are concerned; as colleague James Thomas’ quartile analyses have revealed, following the sales at Arqana and Goffs UK, the further down the ladder you go, the less rosy the picture.

From top to bottom we’ve the autumn yearling sales season covered within these pages, which contain exclusive interviews and features with buyers and sellers, along with a healthy slice of helpful statistics.

The roadshow starts in Ratoath next week, with three days at Tattersalls Ireland. One which immediately catches the eye is the colt

by Kingman out of Listed winner Mary Boleyn - rather appropriately, given the sire has just the single progeny up for grabs, the dam’s black-type win came in the Prix Solitude.

Half a dozen yearlings by Kingman’s Juddmonte barnmate Frankel feature among two days of the Orby sale at Goffs, as do nine by the great Galileo and the same number from Kingman.

That awesome trio are strongly represented as things come to a boil at Book 1 at Tattersalls in Newmarket next month, where other leading lights including Dubawi, Sea The Stars and Pivotal are also sure to turn heads.

Which of the first-crop stallions interest you most?

Harzand and New Bay. They are sons of fantastic sires Sea The Stars and Dubawi. They were both Derby winners, were both tough and talented individuals with a great change of gears and both from excellent female lines.

So far the ones I have liked the best are Shalaa and Kodi Bear. I am also looking forward to seeing those from the champion twoyear-old and Lockinge winner Belardo.

Adaay. I visited him recently at Whitsbury Stud and was very impressed by him. He is the first son of Kodiac standing at stud in the UK and the yearlings look fast. I’d love to work with one of them.

Which stallions do you feel offer most value?

DM: The proven sires who offer the most value are, in my opinion, Camelot, Intello, Lawman, Mastercraftsman and Poet’s Voice. They have all consistently produced a lot of winners including high class winners.

AS: I’m a fan of Havana Gold, Dabirsim, Intello, and older proven horses. You have to get away from fashion.

HS: You have to have an eye to achieve value. Any first-season stallions that look like they are producing racy yearlings, try to get in there before everyone else follows suit.

What is the most important issue facing the yearling sales at the moment?

DM: The political uncertainty throughout Europe. The high end of the spectrum shan’t be affected but the medium to lower end could potentially suffer from a lack of investment from cold footed buyers who don’t know what tomorrow will be made of.

AS: I think that many of us worry that there are not enough owners about. It does feel that there is a lack of new people coming into the game.

HS: No middle market and too many horses/sales. There are decent horses being offered up but no one to buy them. There is a lack of incentive for new buyers with low prize money and the general thinking that the big outfits dominate all. But we all have a dream and that’s why we keep going.

What is the first thing you look for when studying a page?

DM: A strong damside which has shown consistency over a given trip or narrow range of trips. I don’t believe in injecting an awful lot of speed onto a staying family, more often than not you’ll end up with tripless horses. I like good mile-middle distance families.

If you can buy into a foundation family from a great breeder like HH The Aga Khan or Juddmonte, it makes you feel like you could get lucky.

AS: I like to see class in a pedigree, even if it seems quite far back. Young daughters and granddaughters of good families are something I like.

FIND YOUR NEXT LEGEND AT THE IRISH SALES

HS: I look at the sire - does he throw more precocious types or are they more distance horses? For a potential breeze-up purchase you want the earlier types that will be ready to work quickly over a few furlongs at the sales in the spring. You want horses that people inspect and think they can kick on and win with once the season is in full flow.

What is the first thing you look for when inspecting a yearling?

DM: Horses who walk well and freely with a nice easy gait. I also try to buy horses with strong gaskins, this is where the power of the horse comes from. More importantly, you have to love the horse you buy. I am a very instinctive and intuitive person and quite often when you see a horse for the first time, you get a feeling for the horse straightaway. I never buy horses I would force myself to like.

AS: Overall balance and good outlook, and I often know if I will like a horse or not from their first two or three strides out of the box!

HS: I can’t help myself but a strong second thigh closely follo owed by a strong hind quarter/length of hip. That is your source off power and starting point.

What is your fondest achievement in your time at the yearling sales?

DM: To have been underbidder on a number of horses who have subsequently flopped! There’s nothing worse than feeling like you have overpaid for a horse. More seriously, buying Contrapposto for 44,000gns as a yearling was shrewd, he won the Oath maiden at Nottingham (beating Stradivarius!) and second in the Convivial before finishing fourth in the Craven Stakes.

AS: Buying two classic winners at Tatts Ireland in Fairyhouse in the same year - the 2,000 Guineas winner Galileo Gold for €33,000 and Hawksmoor, who won the German Guineas, for €80,000.

HS: At Goffs UK in 2012 David Redvers bought Extortionist and Green Door for £30,000 and £19,000 for us to train at Robins Farm. They weren’t the highest-priced lots but we nurtured and produced those horses to win the Windsor Castle at Royal Ascot and the Flying Childers at Doncaster respectively the following year, our first year of training. Although I wasn’t responsible for buying them, it underlines to me how important getting the producing and training of horses right early on is.

A sale not to be missed

The focus of this year's Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale is very much on quality with the catalogue for part one trimmed to 480 lots, 80 less than 12 months ago, with standout sires Dark Angel, Kingman, Kodiac, Lope De Vega and Sea The Stars all represented.

Among the sale graduates to have flown the flag on the international stage are Jeremy Brummitt's €37,000 purchase Time Warp, a dual Group 1 winner in Hong Kong, and Ado McGuinness's €17,000 buy Beau Recall, a three-time Grade 2 scorer since her export to the US. Closer to home, BBA Ireland's €52,000 acquisition Soffia mined the Group 2 Sapphire Stakes at the Curragh in July.

A new benchmark was set at last year's renewal when Shadwell stretched to €275,000 to secure Al Aadhib, a Kodiac full-brother to the dual Group 2 winner and Whitsbury M Manor Stud stallion Adaay.

That headline act contributed towards aggregate sales of €10,488,000, the third time in as many years that the tenmillion euro mark had been surpassed - a level of trade not seen at the September Sale since the days of the Celtic Tiger.

ew sires have proven as popular at the Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale as Kodiac, whose progeny have topped two of the past five editions.

The juvenile sire extraordinaire, who has fielded 26 two-year-old winners already this season, could rise to the top yet again, with Knockatrina House sending a full-sister to the Group 3 Chipchase Stakes scorer and sire Koropick into

the ring as lot 320 and Baroda Stud consigning a full-brother to the Ascot Listed winner Apex King as lot 455. Tally-Ho Stud, where Kodiac holds court, have seven yearlings by the sire entered for part one with another on offer in part two. Among them is an Aprilfoaled half-sister to the Listed winner My Man, offered as lot 207, and a May-born colt who shares his second dam with Leopardstown 2,000 Guineas Trial winner Orderofthegarter, listed as lot 244.

Muhaarar colt with speedy pedigree sure to shine

The Burns family of Lodge Park Stud have enjoyed many fine days in the sales ring - among the yearlings to pass through their hands was Al Namaah, the Galileo filly out of Alluring Park who became the most expensive yearling ever sold at Book 1 when hammered down for five million guineas in 2013.

The County Kilkenny stud farm could enjoy another memorable sales day courtesy of its Muhaarar colt (lot 213), a half-brother to Sole Power and Sotka, who is the dam of the speedy Pattern winner Fas and UAE 1,000 Guineas winner Silva.

Lodge Park are also represented by a Fast Company half-brother to the Goodwood Listed winner Titus Mills and a granddaughter (284) of the Irish 1,000 Guineas heroine Classic Park by The Last Lion.

Expect more fireworks at this superb sale

Named after the first horse to complete the Anglo-Irish Derby double, the Goffs Orby Yearling Sale is the premier auction of its type in Ireland and every year brings together the very best pedigrees and individuals from across the length and breadth of the country.

Vendors are regularly rewarded with seven-figure sums for their exquisitely bred youngsters, not least last year when Vimal and Gillian Khosla realised €3.2 million for their Galileo filly out of Green Room who has since been named Do You Love Me. The statistics from 12 months ago also show that breeders received handsome dividends across all levels

One thing is for sure, there will be more “I was there” moments at Kildare Paddocks in the first week of October.

Last year’s sale-topping Galileo filly out of Green Room strikes a pose

Galileo gems galore at Orby

N

o sire has wielded such influence on the Orby Sale as the great Galileo, who has supplied the most expensive filly at each of the past three renewals - including last year’s €3.2 million headline act - and the priciest colt at the previous two editions. Such was his popularity last year that his average fell just short of the million-euro mark, with seven yearlings sold for total receipts of €6,810,000.

As well as the Galileo half-sister to last year’s sale-topper out of Green Room (lot 262), the perennial champion sire has eight other offspring on offer this year to attract the top buyers, and they include full-sisters to Alice Springs (127) and this year’s Irish Derby hero Sovereign (213) offered by Glenvale Stud and Barronstown Stud respectively.

The previous Galileo filly out of

Aleagueoftheirown - the Danehill Dancer mare responsible for Alice Springs - went the way of Phoenix Thoroughbreds for a cool €2m last year.

Clare Manning of Boherguy Stud has an attractive proposition with a February-foaled filly out of the Makfi mare Replete (460), an unraced half-sister to the Prix Jean Romanet heroine Romantica, also by Galileo, and Trojan Queen, the dam of Sangarius.

That trio are out of Banks Hill, who is best known as one of the five elite winners out of Juddmonte’s legendary producer Hasili.

The Castlebridge Consignment, meanwhile, get in on the act with a January-born colt out of the Ribblesdale Stakes scorer Banimpire (155) and a half-sister to the Royal Lodge Stakes winner Foundation (472) foaled the same month.

Owenstown Stud offering catches the eye

J

ohn Tuthill of Owenstown Stud has the distinction of having bred two winners of the QEII Stakes, the mile showpiece on British Champions Day, with Excelebration (2012) and Persuasive (2017). The latter was offered as part of the Owenstown Orby draft in 2014, when Cheveley Park Stud made a winning bid of €180,000, while Tuthill also sold the Group 2 Futurity Stakes winner and sire Dragon Pulse - who he bred in partnership with the late Averil Whitehead - for €120,000 at the 2010 Orby Sale.

More can be expected this year when the County Kildare nursery sends a quartet of lots in the ring, not least the March-born Dubawi half-brother to Persuasive and Coral Distaff winner Tisbutadream (188), who is one of two by the Darley flagbearer in the catalogue.

One broodmare whose name has become synonymous with the Goffs Orby Yearling Sale is Vimal and Gillian Khosla’s Theatrical mare Green Room, with four of her offspring having sold for a combined €5.88 million at Ireland’s premier yearling sale.

They include her Group 1-winning daughters Forever Together and Together Forever, both by Galileo, and her unraced two-year-old Do You Love Me, another daughter of Galileo who became the most expensive yearling filly ever sold at Goffs when hammered down to Phoenix Thoroughbreds for €3.2m at last year’s Orby.

The Khoslas will be hoping for more of the same this year when Ballylinch Stud send the latest Galileo filly out of Green Room into the ring on their behalf as lot 262.

Last colt by Kyllachy up for grabs

When the curtain came down on the stallion career of Kyllachy in September 2017, it signalled the end of an illustrious breeding career which had produced such talents as Sole Power and Krypton Factor.

Buyers at this year’s Orby will be presented with the opportunity to secure the final colt by the son of Pivotal when Francois Drion’s Taroka Stud sends lot 415 into the ring.

As well as having scarcity value as the only Kyllachy yearling to be offered in Ireland this year, the January-foaled youngster boasts a striking pedigree being out of Penny’s Gift, the German 1,000 Guineas heroine of 2009 and already the dam of two winners.

The colt was acquired for €33,000 through GHS Bloodstock at last year’s Goffs November Foal Sale.

he colours of the Irish president have certainly made their mark in Irish racing with Suailce having captured the 2008 Irish Cesarewitch at the Curragh for previous incumbent Mary McAleese and Aimhirgin Lass having struck twice at the Killarney July festival for the current office-holder Michael D Higgins.

Aimhirgin Lass, a Pivotal sister to the stakes scorer Seeharn and half-sister to dual Group 3 winner Yellow Rosebud, has since returned to her birthplace at the Irish National Stud, who will offer her first foal by Invincible Spirit (lot 122) among its stellar draft.

young sires around, and the Irish National Stud will offer one of eight yearlings by Kingman in the catalogue with a March-born colt out of the Group 3 heroine Shreyas (23).

As well as the February-foaled colt out of Aimhirgin Lass, other offspring of Invincible Spirit to catch the eye in the Irish National Stud draft are Ballymacoll Stud’s March-born colt (455) out of the Japanese-bred mare Recite, a Forty Niner mare whose three winners include the stakes performers One Spirit and Som Spirit, and an April-foaled half-brother to the stakes performer Rythmique (456) offered on behalf of Margaret Sinanan.

The operation will also offer a March-born filly by the same sire (271) out of Harriet Tubman, a Medaglia D’Oro full-sister to the Breeders’ Cup Turf hero Talismanic, and an April-foaled Siyouni colt (396) who shares his dam with Aimhirgin Lass.

A Free Eagle half-brother to the Siyouni colt went the way of Shadwell for €400,000, when offered by the Irish National Stud last year.

The Irish National Stud will also present a Free Eagle half-brother to Bravo Zolo (14), a stakes winner for Godolphin in both Britain and France, while a queue of buyers is also set to form for the Le Havre half-brother to Group 3 winner Chemical Charge (298).

James Thomas catches up with the operation’s David Cox

F

ounded in 1948, when the Maharajah of Baroda’s dual Irish Classic winner Sayajirao became the first resident of the farm’s stallion boxes, Baroda Stud in Newbridge, County Kildare,

boasts a well-deserved and hard-earned reputation as one of the finest nurseries around.

Now under the stewardship of David Cox and his wife Tamso Doyle, and with recent graduates including the Group 1 winner Cloth Of Stars, the next chapter of this lengthy story of success could well be written at the Goffs Orby Sale.

This year’s Orby catalogue looks a particularly punchy one, and the Baroda Stud draft offers ample strength in depth. The 19-strong group of yearlings includes a handful of the sale’s stand out pedigrees, such as a full-sister to Harry

Angel, the first foal of the Irish 1,000 Guineas heroine Jet Setting and a regally bred daughter of Dubawi, the only filly by the sire in the catalogue.

“Goffs has been good to us over the last few years,” says Cox. “Over the last few years our draft has been improving and we have shown in the past that you can sell a good horse as well at Goffs as anywhere in the world. Our clients are backing us by sending very good stock to the Orby; this year I have yearlings related to top horses and some great physicals.

“I have a lot of sire power too; established stallions like Dubawi, Lope De Vega, Dark Angel, Sea The Stars, Frankel, Le Havre, Kodiac, Iffraaj and some great young sires like

Night of Thunder, Wootton Bassett, Australia, Gleneagles as well as first-season sires such as Fascinating Rock and Harzand.”

Cox could hardly have hoped to bring a stronger offering to Ireland’s flagship yearling auction, where he will be flying solo for the first time in eight years, with Baroda Stud and David Myerscough’s Colbinstown Stud having brought their eight-year long partnership to an amicable close earlier this year.

“It’s a very busy but exciting time at the moment as there’s extra workload due to us now consigning on our own,” he says.

Ticking all three boxes of sire, siblings and physical model is the Dark Angel filly out of Beatrix Potter (156), whose brother Harry Angel now stands under the Darley banner at Dalham Hall Stud having won the July Cup and Haydock Sprint Cup during a quite brilliant career on the track.

“She’s a full-sister to Harry Angel, who was once rated the world’s best sprinter, and is out of a mare who is herself a half-sister to a Group 1 winner [Xtension] so she has a great pedigree and the looks to match it,” Cox says of the Aprilborn foal.

“She has been very straightforward since she was born, has a lovely attitude and takes everything in her stride. She will also be a lovely broodmare in a few years’ time but looks like she is going to

be a racehorse first. She’s a very nice filly who has really thrived and is very athletic.”

Another seriously eyecatching pedigree in this year’s Orby Sale catalogue is the Le Havre colt out of Jet Setting (301), the daughter of Fast Company who rose from a 12,000gns horse-intraining purchase to Irish 1,000 Guineas heroine during a memorable 2016 campaign. She later joined the China Horse Club ranks in the afterglow of that Classic success when signed for at £1.3 million at the Goffs London Sale.

“It’s very exciting to be consigning the first foal of a Classic winner,” says Cox. “Jet Setting shocked a lot of people when she beat Minding to win the Irish 1,000 Guineas but she was a classy filly in her own right.

“He’s one of just three colts in the catalogue by Le Havre. He’s done really well in the preparation, has a nice

temperament and is a very nice colt overall.”

Both the Le Havre colt and the Dark Angel filly were bred by the China Horse Club. That operation is not the only big name among the breeders Baroda are consigning on behalf of, with the Dubawi filly out of Purr Along (440) having been bred in partnership by Qatar Racing and Newsells Park Stud.

The dam, a daughter of Mount Nelson who landed the Lanwades Stud Stakes and Prix du Calvados during her own racing days, is already off the mark at paddocks, as her first foal is the useful dual winner Zuba.

“Her dam was a high-class racemare and has already produced a winner with her first foal, a full-brother to this filly,” says Cox of the Dubawi filly. “She’s a gorgeous individual, a very attractive and racy filly with a great walk and lovely balance. She looks a runner.”

Another headline offering from Baroda is the Frankel filly out of Manderley, a Listedplaced sister to Gregorian (357).

“This filly is out of a fullsister to Gregorian who was fourth to Miss France in the 1,000 Guineas,” says Cox. “Gregorian was a high-class racehorse too and has made a good start to his stallion career. Manderley’s first foal is a filly by Galileo who’s in training with Aidan O’Brien.

She’s a well-balanced and good-looking filly.”

Such a power-packed draft undoubtedly comes with its share of heightened expectations and increased pressure, but Cox says the team putting in the hard yards at the farm ensure the balance remains healthy.

“I have a very good team at home which takes a lot of pressure off, they’re an integral part of the whole operation,” he says. “When I’m out at Goffs UK, Keeneland or

The bar has been set high for the Orby Sale, not only by last year’s results, which included the sale of a €3.2m Galileo sister to Forever Together to Phoenix Thoroughbreds, but with auctions elsewhere this year witnessing recordbreaking trade.

“I expect the trend to continue,” Cox says of the current market strength.

“There seems to be a huge demand for the top horses and hopefully we have a number of them in our draft. Goffs have done a lot of work and clocked up a lot of air miles to promote the Orby Sale and a large contingent of internationals are planning on attending.”

With the Baroda Stud battalion joined by a plethora of other well-credentialled youngsters - including full siblings to Group 1 winners such as Alice Springs, Forever Together and Sovereign - this year’s Orby Sale is one you won’t want to miss.

Ten lots to watch

There have been few finer advertisements for the Goffs Sportman’s Sale than the stunning win of Living In The Past in this year’s Lowther Stakes at York, when the Clipper Logisticsraced filly led from start to finish to deny the strongly fancied Liberty Beach, less than a year after being sold by Newlands House Stud to Joe Foley for €65,000.

This year’s edition will see 390 commercial yearlings offered across two days.

More show-stopping moments in store

Tattersalls rolls out the red carpet in the second week of October each year, as the breeding world descends on Park Paddocks for Europe’s premier yearling auction.

The highlight of last year’s October Sale came when the Lloyd Webbers’ Watership Down Stud sold the Dubawi colt out of Dar Re Mi, since named Darain, for 3.5 million guineas to David Redvers and Qatar Racing, with 392 of the 456 lots on offer changing hands for a record 106,503,000gns - the second time in as many years the 100 million guineas mark had been surpassed.

In the elite sire stakes, Frankel and Sea The Stars have 40 and 31 yearlings listed respectively, while Dubawi and Galileo have 29 and 23 lots apiece, with the latter two having supplied the sale-topper for each of the past ten years.

No fewer than 59 siblings to Classic and Group 1 winners are up for grabs, with 21 Classic and Group 1-winning mares featuring on the list of dams, including

a pair of Dubawi colts who are the first foals out of Prix de l’Opera and Prix Jean Romanet heroine Speedy Boarding and Nassau Stakes scorer Sultanina.

The largest consignment comes from The Castlebridge Consignment with 37 yearlings, followed by Newsells Park Stud with a team of 26, and New England Stud with 24 yearlings. Timely update for Shastye clan

Shastye, the star Danehill mare residing at Newsells Park Stud, has marked herself out as an extraordinary producer with her progeny having fetched 10.8 million guineas in total Book 1 receipts to date, with the four to have broken the million-guinea barrier all by supersire Galileo.

Among her brood is the Middleton Stakes scorer Secret Gesture, the Royal Ascot winners Sir Isaac Newton and Japan - the latter of whom has scored twice in elite company this season - and her 2017 Galileo colt Mogul, who realised 3.4m gns at last year’s sale. The last-named has already

displayed his inherent talent by winning the Group 2 Champions Juvenile Stakes at Leopardstown on Irish Champions Weekend.

Though Shastye is absent from the list of dams this year, two of her daughters have yearlings listed, with an Oasis Dream colt out of the winning Shamardal mare Secret Sense (lot 18) consigned by Newsells Park and a Wootton Bassett colt out of the unraced Sadler’s Wells mare Shabyt (24) offered by the Castlebridge Consignment.

Every year second-crop sires are put under the microscope when their first yearlings are offered at Book 1 and this year is no different.

Shalaa, the dual Group 1-winning juvenile who holds court at Haras de Bouquetot, is represented by six youngsters, while The Gurkha and New Bay have two apiece. Broughton Bloodstock will offer a March-born Shalaa colt (lot 403) on behalf of Green Stone Stud, who is a halfbrother to two stakes scorers in Blaine and Bogart, while Kildaragh Stud act as agent for a Shalaa half-sister to the Group 3 winner and Prix Jean Prat third Spectre (348).

Skyline Thoroughbreds have been entrusted by Stall Parthenaue with a colt by The Gurkha (190) out of a winning half-sister to the Prix de Diane heroine Bright Sky, while New Bay’s custodians Ballylinch Stud offer a colt by the sire (361) out of Janicellaine, a stakes-placed halfsister to Chriselliam, whose wins at the highest level came in the Fillies’ Mile and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf.

s well as the American Pharoah half-brother to Lady Eli who will bring the curtain up on this year’s Book 1, the Lloyd Webbers’ Watership Down Stud has a star-studded cast of yearlings to keep the theatre up throughout the threeday sale.

They include the already named Swiss Ace (lot 64), a Kingman colt out of Swiss Lake who has produced 11 winners from as many runners; a Dubawi colt out of the Lloyd Webbers’ champion older mare The Fugue (77); a Sea The Stars filly out of the Pretty Polly Stakes heroine Ambivalent (158), who has already supplied the Group 2 winner Al Hilalee; a Frankel filly out of the Prix de l’Abbaye heroine and smart producer Gilt Edge Girl (317); and a filly by the same sire out of the unraced Hoity Toity (339), whose Coronation Stakes-winning daughter Lillie Langtry is the dam of the marvellous Minding.

With such glittering names in their pedigrees, the Watership Down team will no doubt be hoping to match last year’s efforts when they sold 16 yearlings for a combined 8,050,000gns.

How Stauffenberg Bloodstock became a stalwart at Tattersalls in just five years Martin Stevens talks to the German vendor about his growing October Sales drafts

I

t’s easy to tell that German breeder and consignor Philipp Stauffenberg has gone native after frequent spells at sales on the other side of the North Sea; the liberal sprinkling of the familiar Irish placeholder ‘you know yourself’ in conversation is a dead giveaway.

Stauffenberg was long established as an accomplished breeder, having produced highclass fillies Four Sins and Lady Marian with wife Marion at their Schlossgut Itlingen south of Münster, when five years ago he began consigning yearlings in Newmarket under his own name on the encouragement of friends Angus Gold and Tom Goff.

If you’re a sales regular, you know yourself that Stauffenberg has quickly become famous for swashbuckling high-end pinhooks with elite pedigrees and lots with prestigious German pages, either homebreds or those consigned on behalf of his compatriots.

With its brand now firmly established, Stauffenberg Bloodstock presents its largest draft at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sales this year.

brother to recent German Group 1 winner Danceteria and a Lope De Vega filly out of a Galileo sister to Irish St Leger third Southern France, and 16 heading for Book 2, among them progeny of Camelot, Farhh, Kingman, Mastercraftsman and Sea The Stars.

The Stauffenberg yearling draft at Tattersalls is more than three times the size of that first one in 2014, and yet the consignor says it could have been much larger still.

“I turned down 30 yearlings, the demand was so immense,” says Stauffenberg. “People have seen we’ve been achieving good results over the last few years and more people would like me to take their horses.

“So I have some new customers who I’ve not consigned for before, but I also have my largest number of pinhooks – nine this year, whereas there are usually three or four, and only one last year.

“We also took fewer yearlings to Baden-Baden last month, and sold fewer homebreds as foals in 2018, so it has all come together to make our biggest consignment.”

The pinhooked horses are owned by Stauffenberg with different combinations of partners, and there has been a marked change of policy for 2018/19.

Many of the previous foals purchased by the consignor with resale in mind came from the top tier of trade, while last year’s sole pinhooked yearling – the Camacho colt Motarajel, bought for 62,000gns and resold to Shadwell for 200,000gns and a winner at Mont-de-Marsan in recent weeks – had been sourced from the middle of the weanling market.

This year’s pinhooks were selected from across the price spectrum, ranging from 26,000gns for the Equiano colt out of Terse in Book 2 (lot 662) to €180,000 for the Siyouni half-brother to Danceteria (185).

“My partners like pinhooking in the £100,000 to £200,000 bracket but two years ago I saw other high-rolling traders come into that part of the market, and more of the bigger owners were buying foals as well as yearlings,” says Stauffenberg.

“Prices had got so high in that upper end that I was worried about spending the amount we had been for pinhooking and still having room to make profit. I bought only one in

2017, purely by myself with none of my pinhooking partners involved, and although at 62,000gns the Camacho colt wasn’t cheap, I just didn’t feel comfortable investing 100,000gns or more that year.”

Hence the different approach with this year’s trades, he goes on to explain.

“Last year I felt quite happy spending in the different sectors of the market, and I deliberately focussed more on racehorse types which I can hopefully sell on to owners and trainers who are looking for winners but don’t want to spend a fortune,” he says.

“I bought another Camacho colt (out of the Lawman mare Testimony; lot 664) for €36,000 last year and he is just such a fantastic mover, so we must sell him even if the sire isn’t having his best year. But we bought a few more expensive ones too, so have spent across a broader price range than in the first few years; whether it’s a clever move or not, we will find out.”

Stauffenberg is aware that the fate of his pinhooks could be affected by political turmoil in Britain caused by the country’s tortuous withdrawal from the European Union, but is one of the few who see an upside in the stalemate.

“You can worry about the uncertainty caused by Brexit, how it will influence the market, but one positive sideeffect might be the weakness of

sterling,” he observes. “Even if we vendors don’t get quite as much back as in the past, the conversion rate of the pound to a lot of the international currencies is so weak it might drive more people into the British bloodstock market to buy.

“And, besides, the quality is in Newmarket; it always is, the October Yearling Sale catalogues are very strong once again. Whoever wants to invest in bloodstock on an international scale has to be there.”

Going into more detail on the members of his draft who could pique the interest of those international bloodstock investors, Stauffenberg startss with the half-brother to Danceteria – arguably the pedigree pick, being a son off the popular Siyouni and a sibling to a tough, top-class performer out of a Group 3-winning half-sister to nonee other than Lope De Vega.

“The colt hails from a veryy strong female line and he received a much appreciated d update before the sale,” he sa ays.

“He’s very nice, a smashing horse; he cost €180,000 as a foal because he’s just such a good walker. He’s a pure athlete. I love him.”

Of the daughter of Lope Dee Vega and What Say You (117 7) Stauffenberg says: “Southern n France has been knocking at the door of a Group 1 victoryy and he ran a good race in thee

Irish St Leger. The filly cost 160,000gns and is of lovely quality, so we should be fine with her.”

A Harzand filly out of the Duke Of Marmalade mare Athenaire (178) sourced for €35,000 is an intriguing entrant in Book 1 and her consignor admits: “Other pinhookers were laughing at me for buying a Harzand foal, but I really liked the horse; she’s extremely nice and I just hope that when she’s presented as a yearling, in a different environment compared to the foal market, other people see the racing potential that I saw in her. She’s B k 1 physical.” h i l” a Book It’s a sad indictment of the industry when buying a foal from the first crop of a dual Derby winner by Sea The Stars is seen as an unorthodox move, and Stauffenberg says: “I don’t go for cheap speed; my focus is on quality.

The main goal for the people who invest with me is profit and I think the best way of achieving that at this level is by presenting people with a genuine racehorse.”

Moving on to Book 2, and Stauffenberg clearly has a soft spot for his o e ed homebred

Mastercraftsman filly out of the winning Shirocco mare Zegna (736); “a real star” is the verdict delivered in hushed tones.

The Cable Bay colt out of a sister to Helleborine, the dam of top sprinter Calyx (878), also comes in for special mention.

“The sire is doing very nicely with his first two-year-olds – better than a lot of people thought – and at 40,000gns this one is the most expensive foal by the sire sold last year,” says Stauffenberg. “He’s just a stunning horse. I’d be disappointed if he didn’t make it on to plenty of lists!”

Calyx’s sire Kingman is responsible for the vendor’s filly out of the Group 1-placed Pivotal mare Calyxa (no relation despite the name; lot 843).

“He’s a stallion making headlines on the racecourse and in the sales ring,” says Stauffenberg. “This filly is a May foal, so is still a little on the small side, but she’s a very elegant, good-looking model.”

It’s unfair expecting the consignor to pick out favourites when he is selling horses on behalf of different breeders and investors, and only lack of space prohibits us talking more about the lots in the Stauffenberg Bloodstock draft at Newmarket.

It also includes a Sea The Stars filly out of Rose Rized (1334), a Listed-winning daughter of German Oaks heroine Rosenreihe, and a Camelot colt out of Rosenreihe herself (1335), along with

three well-bred offspring of Sea The Moon (523, 558 and 673) and youngsters by Showcasing (506), Gleneagles (846), Farhh (858), Muhaarar (1005) and Golden Horn (1299).

“The draft overall is of very good quality, which we’ve managed to maintain in spite of increasing numbers,” Stauffenberg sums up.

Reflecting on the ascent of his operation to become an October Sales mainstay, he adds: “Those people who bought a lot of horses and did their research always knew our farm were selling yearlings and it was Tom Goff who pushed me into selling them under my own name.

“I’d always thought it was better to be part of an English or Irish consignment, but we are now well accepted. I can’t complain at all.”

The growth of Stauffenberg Bloodstock is all the more satisfying because it has defied

doubters who thought the market would turn away from German-bred horses.

“When my wife and I first started breeding racehorses in the 1990s, and we foaled everything at home, we were sometimes told that the GER suffix would be a big disadvantage and we would be better off selling British and Irish-breds in Britain,” he says.

“But I always thought that the GER stamp would be an advantage because generally the German breed punches well above its weight, and is renowned for soundness, and indeed it has turned out to be a positive thing.”

The vendor who has so successfully bridged the gap between Germany and Britain concludes: “You know yourself, there are maybe one or two people who are still snobbish about German horses.

“But selling under our name has worked out very well.”
