Racine Art Museum Annual Contributors Report 2025
In the Space Between
2025 was a time of reflection and resolve for the Racine Art Museum (RAM).
Over the course of the year, we experienced meaningful transition, planning, investment, and forward movement toward a shared vision: to be a vibrant hub where art sparks imagination and inspires possibility. We also took a thoughtful look at how RAM is experienced and where we can grow. Through donor conversations, board and staff discussions, member and guest surveys, and everyday exchanges in our galleries and studios, we gathered valuable perspectives. That honest assessment became more than just insight—it directly shaped RAM 2.0, our new strategic plan and blueprint for the museum’s next stage of evolution.
Throughout 2025, we redoubled our efforts to engage with you— our RAM community. In person, online, and through social media, you told us you wanted more: more exhibitions and classes, more opportunities for artists, more creative learning, and more ways to gather and connect. You also challenged us to be more approachable, more visible, and more engaged in the life of Racine. We heard you. That feedback informed real adjustments—shaping our programs and how we share our story, enhancing our operations, and guiding how we steward both our downtown and Wustum campuses with intentionality and care.
Your comments also helped us to strengthen our internal alignment — clarifying priorities, refining processes, and reinforcing a culture grounded in collaboration and accountability. These efforts, though often behind the scenes, are essential to ensuring that our public-facing work is dynamic, accessible, and sustainable.
Looking back, the year’s listening, learning, and growth sharpened our understanding of our role in Racine and illuminated the path ahead. Together with our artists, supporters, educators, and community partners, we are creating a future fueled by creativity and connection—one that bridges disciplines, generations, and perspectives, and invites all who engage with RAM to discover possibility in the space between.

While there were numerous exhibitions at RAM and RAM’s Wustum Museum in 2025 that sparked delight and curiosity, a few special moments stood out.
On Fire Part II: Surveying Women in Glass in the Late-Twentieth Century
This exhibition in RAM’s largest gallery offered a deep dive into a vital period of artistic production by featuring artists who explore the creative potential of glass. This show referenced the fact that 41% of the artists in our collection are women and acknowledged the substantial presence of women in the glass world. Building from this, we hosted a public event featuring women from Racine who manage glass studios in conversation with high school students and a recent college graduate about how it feels to be in those spaces and work with glass in artistic ways.
Trompe L’oeil (Fool the Eye)
Two other exhibitions challenged expectations as they “fooled the eye.” What looked like found object assemblages turned out to be the clay or metal sculptures of Karen Dahl and James Doran and the painted wood constructions of Ron Isaacs. These manipulations of materials consistently provoked surprise, doubt, and, ultimately, appreciation of the skill involved.
Area Artists in the Spotlight
From the Archives: Recently Established Artist Archives at RAM showcased eight Wisconsin-based artists with recently established archives at RAM — Jerrold Belland, Lisa Englander, Caren Heft, Alex Mandli, Michael Nitsch, Bill Reid, Susan M. Sorenson, and Marc Wollman —each of whom have longstanding and impactful connections to RAM and RAM’s Wustum Museum. Featuring a mixture of existing collection holdings and recent acquisitions, this exhibition offered a glimpse into the careers of these eight artists who have helped make RAM what it is today.
The seventh biennial RAM Artist Fellowship and Emerging Artist Exhibition, sponsored by a grant from the Osborne and Scekic Family Foundation, highlighted the work of four fellowship artists and one emerging artist from Racine/Kenosha counties. Exhibiting artists were June Ambro, Jeff Baenen, Georgia Bellas, Richard Berns, and Erin Krembs (emerging artist.) In fall 2025, all five artists presented concurrent solo exhibitions at RAM’s Wustum Museum.

2025 Highlights
In 2025, more than 14,500 people participated in our studio classes, school programs, family activities, and community engagement opportunities. Supporters like you make it possible for us to continue making a meaningful impact on so many people—thank you!
Many of the people we engaged in 2025 were class-takers, who enjoyed more than 180 options for multi-week classes and one-day workshops throughout the year. Summer continued to be our busiest and most exciting time at the museum, with five weeks of youth art classes for kids ages 4–16. The season culminated with Summer Art Camp—Sensory Safari!, a five-day exploration of the animal kingdom through art making that engaged the senses.
We also continue to work with local schools for Wustum’s Outreach 5 and eighth-grade Zero Waste Initiative art programs, bringing thousands of students to the museum each year to engage with the arts and develop their creative thinking skills.
Our SPARK! creative engagement program for individuals with memory loss and their care families saw incredible participation throughout 2025. The program continued to bring joy and connection to participants—our SPARK! lers—and their loved ones, through sensory exploration and the arts.
Wustum studio art faculty saw several changes in 2025. After more than a decade of teaching, our longtime friend and teacher, Nate Hunter, relocated out of state. We thank him for his years of enthusiasm, big ideas, and unwavering commitment to students. We also welcomed our new clay instructor, Jeff Shawhan, who renewed local interest in raku firing. Additionally, we were thrilled to introduce two new fiber instructors: Ashley Bohne, RAM’s Exhibition Support/Production Assistant who has been sharing her passion for tapestry, and 2024–25 RAM Emerging Artist Erin Krembs, who brings their love of animals into the studio through sculpture and fiber arts.
As longtime participants of Downtown Racine’s monthly First Fridays, RAM was thrilled to help launch the inaugural Creative Crawl in May. From hands-on art making and live demonstrations to local author readings and pop-up shows, there was something inspirational for everyone throughout the area’s studios, shops, restaurants, and hotels.
Last June, Wustum hosted Kids Day: Sense-ational Art, the latest iteration of a beloved annual community celebration. Families engaged their senses through tactile play stations, sensory scavenger hunts and games, and a myriad of art making activities—all for free! Our Education team created the Sensory Engagement Hallway specifically for this event, inviting attendees to collaborate with scented marker drawings, noisemakers, and more. Join us for another thrilling afternoon of activities and art making on Friday, June 12!
Groov’n in the Garden, an outdoor concert and arts celebration presented in partnership with Mahogany Black Arts & Cultural Center, returned to the verdant grounds at Wustum for its third iteration last July. Guests enjoyed a night of neo-soul, R&B, funk, and jazz by DJ Julian Gross, VersaTile, and The Stone Jam Band. The event blended music and visual arts with local artist Dee Hutch crafting a stunning mixed-media painting throughout the night. Get ready to groove once more with our latest edition on Thursday, July 23!
Another beloved, over-the-top event returned in the fall. Full Steam Ahead offered a modern twist on the age-old art of relief printing through oversized prints with a steamroller! 11 area artists participated in last year’s event, each carving a large-scale relief before the event and working together to produce prints in a spectacular way. Attendees could witness this collaborative printing process while getting hands-on and creating their own make-and-take artworks. This highly anticipated event returns to Wustum in 2026 on Saturday, August 8.
Rounding out the year at Wustum was the spooktacular Free Fall Family Fun Fest in October. The Witches of Wustum brewed up a whole lot of frighteningly fun entertainment, including a pumpkin patch donated by Swan’s Pumpkin Farm, scavenger hunt, art projects, and outdoor games! Participants donned their most creative outfits—inspired by superheroes, movies, fairytales, and more—and got to strut their stuff in a costume parade. Racine Theatre Guild joined in the fall fun for the first time in 2025, providing spooky stories, treats with Packy the elephant mascot, and an opportunity to show off costumes on the theatre stage! If you’re looking to have a scary good time this fall, stop by Wustum for this year’s event on Saturday, October 24.

RAM PEEPS® Brand Art Exhibition 2025
Each year, RAM hosts a non-traditional exhibition of artwork made from or inspired by colorful PEEPS® Brand marshmallow candy. Drawing tens of thousands of visitors and national media coverage since 2010, this familyfriendly exhibition is beloved by many. RAM PEEPS® Brand Art Exhibition 2025 featured 187 creative and entertaining entries by more than 260 artists from across the country—our best numbers yet!
While it may sound a bit unusual for an art museum to host this type of exhibition, RAM is no stranger to unusual materials in art. Artists consistently push material boundaries, so many of the works in our permanent collection reflect an interest in utilizing and experimenting with non-art materials— examples include candy, currency, animal skins, medications, and toys.
RAM PEEPS® Brand Art Exhibition 2025 was the last iteration of this exhibition to be presented in its original location at RAM. We are excited to discuss this year’s new and improved exhibition experience in our next publication—stay tuned!
Au Revoir to SAVOUR
The gardens at Wustum came alive for SAVOUR 2025 in September— glowing with fanciful florals, dazzling dancers, magical music, creative cuisine, astounding artwork, and a joyful gathering of guests and friends.
As RAM and Wustum create new engaging opportunities and events, we have decided to retire our annual SAVOUR fundraiser to focus resources on these future offerings. With heartfelt appreciation, we thank you for supporting the event—and the visual and culinary artists who made it possible—over the last eight years, and hope you enjoy the extraordinary programming ahead. The SAVOUR committee and staff are grateful to the many friends and partners who made the event so meaningful, including sponsors, donors, guests, volunteers, performers, staff, chefs, restaurants, and participating artists.
Since its inception in 2018, SAVOUR was envisioned as a distinctive, one-of-a-kind fundraiser unlike any other in the region. It reflected the museum’s belief in the power of creativity to foster collaboration, strengthen partnerships, and build community pride. By bringing together artists and chefs, the event created culinary experiences inspired by art, celebrating Racine’s creative talent across disciplines.
Over the years, the event became a beloved tradition, known for its immersive atmosphere blending design, fantasy, food, and fun. Its impact was significant, raising over $700,000 in support of education and exhibition programs, engaging more than 1,500 guests, and generating thousands of contributions—alongside countless hours of planning and production. With appreciation, we thank all who made SAVOUR possible. Though the event has concluded, its legacy of creativity, collaboration, and community will continue to inspire future programming at RAM, Wustum, and beyond.
Financial Summary
RAM maintains a strong, debt-free financial position with the capacity to sustain core operations while pursuing new initiatives. At the same time, there are opportunities to optimize asset utilization and enhance efficiency.
Like many museums and cultural organizations, RAM faces a variety of challenges that resulted from the pandemic and other external factors. Because of this, we have taken and continue to take actions to ensure sustainability now and in the future.
In the short term, we have been pursuing additional funds through gifts and grants focused on capacity-building and institutional development, while also streamlining expenses and modifying our operations. For the long term, we are working to strengthen our business model with financial strategies that include striking a realistic balance between earned and contributed revenue, shoring up cash flow, broadening our base of support, and catalyzing improvement through capital investments and endowment growth.
We are deeply grateful for RAM’s current financial stability, but we also recognize that long-term sustainability requires intentional planning and disciplined action. Through a comprehensive strategic planning process, we established a clear direction for the next five years—grounded in today’s economic realities, evolving audience behaviors, and a competitive cultural landscape. The result is a focused framework to guide institutional growth, strengthen financial resilience, and position RAM for sustained impact in the years ahead.

This is one of my favorite times of the year—celebrating YOU—the hundreds of individuals, organizations, businesses, charitable foundations, and volunteers whose generosity sustained RAM and Wustum’s exhibitions, collections, education programs, and operations throughout 2025.
I am pleased to report that because of you, development revenue exceeded our annual budget goal by more than $55,000. Here are just a few of the many highlights from 2025:
RAM’s 2025 Year-end Campaign raised $281,000 vs. our goal of $225,000. The campaign included several new or lapsed membership renewals that were also eligible for the $45,000 match provided by our generous partners, David Charak and the Ruffo Family Foundation
Grants awarded include:
• Racine Community Foundation: preparation and research for the 2026 exhibition and related programming for Cut It Out: Papercutting Traditions and Beyond and for 2025 SPARK! programming.
• Wisconsin Arts Board: 2025 operations.
• Ruth Arts Legacy Foundation: general operations.
• Helen Bader Foundation: a new, updated SPARK! video.
• Windgate Foundation: a two-year grant supporting 2025 and 2026 outreach education programming.
• Osborne and Scekic Family Foundation: 2025 free admission days.
Additionally, collaborations with several long-time and new organizations, locally and regionally, have established important relationships to support exhibitions and educational outreach.
As you may know, I will be retiring from RAM on June 30. It has been an absolute honor and privilege to serve RAM and Wustum all these years. I am deeply grateful to my co-workers, board members, volunteers, and you—our amazing donors—who have traveled along with me on this journey. It has been a joy to celebrate RAM’s legacy, and I look forward to seeing the organization flourish into a bright and exciting future. While I’m eager to spend more time with my husband, family, and friends, I will truly miss the many wonderful people I’ve had the joy of getting to know and love throughout the past 21+ years.
