MANAGING DIRECTOR Welcome to Season 62 at Long Wharf Theatre. There is something powerful about gathering together. We arrive from different neighborhoods, different generations, different experiences, carrying different ideas about the world. And then, for a few hours, we sit beside one another and share a story. We listen. We wrestle with what we’ve seen. Sometimes we recognize ourselves. Sometimes we are asked to see through someone else’s eyes. That possibility is at the heart of our new season, State of the Union. Throughout Season 62, we are exploring the role art can play in helping us better understand ourselves, one another, and the world we share. At a time when it can be easier to retreat into our own corners, art invites us to do something different: to stay curious, to sit with complexity, and to make room for perspectives beyond our own. Those acts may feel small, but they are essential to strong communities and a thriving democracy. We begin with The Ford/Hill Project. Nearly three decades apart, Anita Hill and Christine Blasey Ford sat before the United States Senate and shared deeply personal testimony with the nation. Their words became part of our public record and our collective memory. By placing their testimony side by side, this piece gives us the opportunity to hear those words again, together, in a theatre, and from the perspective that time and our own experiences can bring. What do we hear differently now? What has changed? What hasn’t? And what happens when art gives us the space to return to moments we think we know and encounter them anew? Those questions are just the beginning. Throughout the season, we will carry them forward through the stories on our stages and, with our partners, through our Artistic Congress, a series of gatherings where artists, audiences, and members of our Greater New Haven community can come together around the ideas our work puts into motion. And we hope you’ll continue to join us. Bring what moved you. Bring what challenged you. Bring your questions and your own experiences. Listen. Share. Stay curious. And come back. Because the most meaningful conversations are not finished in a single moment; they grow as more voices become part of them. For more than six decades, Long Wharf Theatre has believed in the power of artists and audiences coming together around a story. Today, as our stage extends across Greater New Haven, we have the extraordinary opportunity to create those moments of connection throughout the community we call home. Thank you for being here. Thank you for showing up for art, for artists, and for one another. Welcome to Long Wharf Theatre. We’re so glad you’re here, and we hope you’ll be part of the conversation all season long. With gratitude, Meredith Suttles | Managing Director

Founded during the peak of America’s regional theatre movement, Long Wharf Theatre opened on July 4, 1965 with Arthur Miller’s The Crucible. Under the leadership of Managing Director Meredith Suttles, our company continues to build on a legacy of more than 400 productions that represent the best of classic plays, beloved musicals, and boundary-breaking new work, including plays by Matt Barbot, Julia Cho, Anna Deavere Smith, Ricardo Pérez González, Dominique Morisseau, Dael Orlandersmith, Eliana Pipes, Tracey Scott Wilson, Lloyd Suh, and Paula Vogel. We are internationally recognized for a commitment to commissioning, developing, and producing new plays that expand the canon of the American theatre. More than 30 Long Wharf Theatre productions have transferred to Broadway and Off-Broadway, and we produced three winners of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama: D.L. Coburn’s The Gin Game, Michael Cristofer’s The Shadow Box, and Margaret Edson’s Wit. Today, Long Wharf Theatre continues to capture the imagination of our audiences as it activates the City of New Haven and beyond as its stage. Beginning in 2023, our communities experienced Long Wharf Theatre productions in 30 unique venues across performing arts centers, music halls, community spaces, civic buildings, libraries, schools, and homes in Branford, Cheshire, Hamden, Madison, Milford, Woodbridge, and eight New Haven

neighborhoods, including our 2024 award-winning production of Arthur Miller’s A View from the Bridge at the Canal Dock Boathouse. Last year's 61st season brought two sold out runs with English and August Wilson's Gem of the Ocean. Building upon our core pillars of artistic innovation, radical inclusion, and kaleidoscopic partnerships, Long Wharf Theatre is living into its promise of Theatre for Everyone by offering free student matinees, free tickets to all students grades K-12, discounted tickets for college students, an internship program with SCSU, Pay-What-You-Wish previews, and free public programming throughout the year. In recognition of its artistic achievements, Long Wharf Theatre won a Regional Theatre Tony Award, the Margo Jones Award, and multiple Tony, Obie, and Connecticut Critics Circle awards and nominations in nearly every category. Our efforts have garnered extensive feature stories in The New York Times, The Washington Post, American Theatre magazine, and PBS NewsHour. In 2023, Artistic Director Jacob G. Padrón was named Person of the Year by the National Theatre Conference, joining the ranks of former recipients August Wilson, Lloyd Richards, and Joseph Papp for leading with courage and creating possibility for Long Wharf Theatre.

Long Wharf Theatre’s production of The Ford/Hill Project takes place on the unceded territory of the Quinnipiac, Paugussett, and Wappinger Peoples. We acknowledge that Indigenous peoples and nations have for generations stewarded the lands and waterways of what we now call the state of Connecticut. We honor and respect the enduring relationship that exists between these peoples and nations and this land. We remind ourselves that along with stolen land came stolen people. It is our responsibility to the future to know our past.

ARTISTIC INNOVATION We are creating the future of theatre through bold, courageous, boundary-breaking storytelling.

RADICAL INCLUSION We are rooting all our work in antiracism and accessibility to ensure that everyone, everywhere, has a seat at Long Wharf Theatre’s table.

KALEIDOSCOPIC PARTNERSHIPS We are forging powerful collaborative relationships within and beyond our community to celebrate and amplify each other’s diverse perspectives.

OUR VALUES IN ACTION: Free student matinees Free K-12 student tickets $10 SCSU student tickets $15 college student tickets

THE FORD/HILL PROJECT: A SPACE TO REFLECT Deepening the immersive aspect of this unique and powerful performance, there will be a dedicated “Decompression Space” directly outside the theater that will be staffed by a mental health professional before, during, and after every performance should any audience members choose to quietly reflect on the performance in a supportive environment. And immediately following each performance, there will be a Public Conversation facilitated by a range of community partners that will offer audiences the chance to engage with the performance and expand on its themes more fully. Decompression Space professionals and Public Conversation facilitators include Rev. Martine Gloria Bruno; Dr. Robert Nesbitt, Jr., LCSW; Alice Forrester, PhD.; Clifford Beers leadership and staff. Alice Forrester, PhD, is former Chief Executive Officer of Clifford Beers Community Health Partners. She has a Masters Degree from NYU in Drama Therapy and a PhD from Fielding University in Clinical Psychology. Dr. Forrester has focused her clinical leadership on developing models of care to help chronically stressed families address the complexity surrounding their physical, mental and social well-being. Dr. Forrester was one of a group of women who are the original founders of the WOW Cafe Theater in NYC during the 1980's and directed and designed multiple performance arts pieces in the East Village. Dr. Forrester currently sits on many legislatively appointed commissions in Connecticut, in particular on the recently formed Transforming Children’s Behavioral Health, the CT Behavioral Health Partnership Oversight Council and serves and as a Commissioner for Public Health for the City of New Haven. Dr. Forrester was also appointed by Governor Malloy to the former Sandy Hook Commission, and Clifford Beers delivered the recovery mental health services for the Sandy Hook School after the tragedy. Dr. Forrester is the adoptive mother of three and resides in New Haven, CT.

Dr. Robert Nesbitt a Bronx, NY native, is a holistic psychotherapist - Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), founder of The Dover Counseling Center, LLC in New Haven, CT. He is a poet, video storyteller, and sound healer whose work bridges science, spirit, and soul transformation. As the creator and co-host of The R.E.A.L. Roots & Resilience , he invites listeners to explore the intersections of mental health, ancestry, and healing—guiding them through journeys of mindfulness, self-discovery, and spiritual awakening.

With a career spanning over two decades in clinical social work, leadership, and education, Dr. Nesbitt has dedicated his life to helping others heal from trauma and reclaim their emotional and spiritual wholeness. He integrates traditional psychotherapy with mindfulness, chakra balancing, sound therapy, and poetic reflection, creating sacred spaces for transformation that honor both science and spirituality. Dr. Nesbitt earned his Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Long Island University, his Master’s in Social Work from New York University, and his Doctorate in Social Work from Simmons University, where he also delivered a poetic commencement address centered on intersectionality, resilience, and empowerment. His doctoral research, Brainwaves of Faith, explores the stigma of mental health care within religious communities—particularly in the African American church —and advocates for the integration of faith and psychotherapy as complementary paths to healing. As a poet, Dr. Nesbitt writes with purpose and soul, using art as activism to challenge oppression, celebrate intersectionality, and dismantle stigma. His poetry speaks to the resilience of the human spirit, reminding readers and listeners that healing is both revolutionary and deeply personal. His poetry reflects his belief that we are all sacred beings capable of transformation, restoration, and love. Beyond his clinical and creative work, Dr. Nesbitt serves as Director of Capital Planning, Development, & Innovation at The New York Foundling, where he leads strategic initiatives in residential and developmental services for people with intellectual disabilities. He is also an Adjunct Lecturer at Capella University, mentoring bachelor level and graduate social work students to become compassionate, culturally responsive practitioners. Through his private practice, The Dover Counseling Center, he provides psychotherapy rooted in mindfulness, evidence-based interventions, and spiritual awareness. Through The R.E.A.L. Roots & Resilience Podcast, Dr. Nesbitt combines his passions for psychology, spirituality, and storytelling to help others break generational cycles, reconnect with their ancestry, and transform pain into purpose. Whether through sound therapy, poetic expression, or clinical insight, his mission remains the same: to help people remember who they are, reclaim their voice, and rise in the power of their truth.

Rev. Martine Gloria Bruno is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the state of Connecticut and is in private practice. She received her Bachelor of Music from S.U.N.Y Purchase, Master of Arts from New York Theological Seminary, Master of Social Work from University of Connecticut School of Social Work and is a graduate of Yale Divinity School. Pastor Gloria (as affectionately called by the congregation) is the pastor of United Congregational Church of Norwalk in West Norwalk, CT. She has toured Europe and graced prestigious stages like Carnegie Hall, Radio City Music Hall etc. She is the recipient of many service awards including a Proclamation from Queens County where she is a native. Singing in the subways is a ministry for Pastor Gloria has been singing with Music Under New York for over 20 years. Martine looks to expand her audiences as she merges mental health, spirituality, ecology and art. Martine is a multifaceted artist and pastoral care clinician that continues to push herself towards service through mental health, spirituality, ecology and art.

The Dover Counseling Center strives to make quality mental health care accessible by offering affordable fees and flexibility whenever possible. Whether you are seeking support through a difficult season or are ready to begin a deeper journey toward healing and personal growth, we welcome the opportunity to support you. The R.E.A.L. Roots & Resilience Podcast: Mental Health & Bloodlines explores the powerful connections between who we are, where we come from, what we inherit, and how we heal. The podcast is hosted by Dr. Robert Nesbitt, Jr., LCSW; Christopher Smothers, Genealogist and founder of Unearthing Your Roots; Dr. Kismyth Shuler, LCSW; and Rev. Martine Bruno, LCSW. Together, they bring perspectives from mental health, social work, genealogy, spirituality, history, and lived experience to conversations about the forces that shape our individual and collective well-being. Through candid discussions and thought-provoking interviews, R.E.A.L. Roots & Resilience takes mental health beyond the therapy room, exploring its intersections with family, ancestry, race, spirituality, relationships, disability, culture, creativity, history, and community. The podcast examines how the experiences we carry today may be connected to our families, our bloodlines, the generations that came before us, and the communities that shaped who we are.

Featuring guests from diverse disciplines and lived experiences, the podcast tackles topics ranging from ancestral healing and Black history to narcissism, disability, faith, trauma, identity, relationships, and the arts. These conversations invite listeners to look more deeply not only at individual struggles but also at the historical, cultural, familial, and spiritual contexts surrounding them. At its core, The R.E.A.L. Roots & Resilience Podcast is about understanding our roots, confronting difficult truths, breaking unhealthy cycles, honoring the strength of those who came before us, and recognizing the resilience within our bloodlines. Because sometimes understanding where we come from is an important part of understanding who we are and how we heal. Founded in 1913 as one of the nation’s earliest community mental health clinics, Clifford Beers Community Care Center (CBCCC) has evolved over more than a century into an organization focused on the health and well-being of the whole family and the communities in which they live. Today, CBCCC serves more than 3,000 children, adults, and family members each year. Our care spans the lifespan, from early childhood development and education to adult mental health, with deep expertise in trauma, crisis care, autism, and family-centered treatment. As a longstanding clinical training organization, we also prepare future psychologists and behavioral health professionals while bringing emerging knowledge and practices into the care we provide. Rooted in trauma-informed and anti-racist practices, CBCCC recognizes that mental health is shaped by families, relationships, communities, lived experiences, and the conditions in which people live. This understanding guides how we care for people and how we show up in the communities we serve.

We create productions that are artistically daring and emotionally potent to cultivate connections across real and perceived divides. We produce our projects using an evolving set of best practices that are influenced by the principles of community organizing and movement building. This is part of an investigation into how storytelling can have the most relevance and impact in efforts to create a more just and humane society. Our projects manifest in more than one medium but everything we do is infused with our love of the immediacy of live performance.

UP NEXT Written in 1967 as a response to America’s moral debt for the Vietnam War, Arthur Miller’s The Price is an achingly intimate exploration of two estranged brothers reuniting years after their father’s death demands a reckoning with the question: what price do we pay in the present for the choices we made in the past? In a bold reimagining of the play that responds to our own fraught times, renowned director Ralph B. Peña returns to Long Wharf Theatre (The Chinese Lady, 2021) and invites audiences to experience this universal story from the perspective of an Asian American family.
