St. Benedict is like a second home to me. I transferred here my sophomore year, and instantly knew I made the right decision. At SBPS you can participate in any and every sport or extracurricular activity, while balancing your schoolwork.

Teachers are always available before or after school to give extra help, and are easy to get to know. Here at SBPS you are encouraged to join everything you can. This year my friend and I started a Pep Club to promote school spirit, an opportunity that has made my high school experience that much more memorable.

St. Benedict Prep, for me, has always been a place to call home. I chose St. Ben’s because of the welcoming community of teachers and students as well as the many opportunities that are given to you. Since our class sizes are smaller, we each receive individual attention from teachers. You are encouraged to ask questions and you get the most out of each class you take. We offer many sports and a variety of clubs.

Everyone finds a place to fit in. Last year, we started our House System. It brought our school closer together through volunteering in the community and house competitions throughout the year. I couldn’t imagine my high school career anywhere else.

BYOD: Bring Your Own Device Now in its second year, the BRING YOUR OWN DEVICE (BYOD) technology program has been met with great acceptance and excitement. BYOD is a model where students bring their own mobile tech devices for use in the classroom.

This option provides families:

greater flexibility, reduced overall costs and the ability to meet the needs of the individual learner.

Our BYOD program offers a technology called Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI).

This VDI technology allows the school to assign a “virtual” computer to a student who then is able to access it through their own personal mobile tech device. Through a “window” or “app” on their personal devices, students are able to access individual, virtual Microsoft Windows 7 desktops, equipped with the specific software they need to complete tasks not yet easily done online or available on their specific devices.

Access to the VDI infrastructure from off-campus allows students to continue to work on class work at home or wherever needed. Students can purchase eBooks instead of print versions which can be a great savings to the family.

Research shows that students who used mobile tech devices:

> Are more open to collaboration and interaction with teachers > Have better reading comprehension scores

than students who use print versions of the same text > Use technologies and develop skills that they will need later in life when they join the workforce

What is a Protégé? A Protégé at SBPS is a senior who has expressed interest in a particular career before needing to choose a college major. During third trimester, students will enter the business world working approximately 12-15 hours a week, while earning academic credit for their effort.

How do I become a Protégé? You must complete the Career Preparation Class, have a good attendance record, meet GPA standards and be approved through an interview with the program director.

House System Fosters leadership and

Community

The new House System will, again, be an important facet of student life at St. Benedict Prep for 2013-14. The entire Secondary School is divided into five houses that are named after saints belonging to the religious order founded by St. Benedict.

They are:

Bede House (Forest Green) Boniface House (Orange) Gregory House (Purple) Hilda House (Silver) Scholastica House (Navy Blue) This is an opportunity for a unified Secondary School environment consistent with competition and loads of FUN! The Houses work together over the course of the year to earn points through academic GPAs, attendance, skills competitions, as well as a variety of other opportunities. All new students to the Secondary School are assigned to their House during the first week of school.

The House with the most points at the end of the year will have first pick of the possible rewards that are available ranging from a trip to Great America to bowling or a lakefront picnic.

Each House is led by a senior selected as Head of House. The students learn about their House’s patron saint, create symbols, flags and cheers to represent their House, and develop a sense of belonging.

Experience It!

This unique program allows students to have a special experience related to a class each year. A trip is designed around a class created by teachers and students that responds to current events or interests. Then, during a break or at the end of the school year, they experience what they have been learning and studying.

Last year, the WWI History class visited Belguim, France and England.

In 2013-14, the Spanish class will visit Spain and the Italian Renaissance and Art class will take an 11-day tour from Milan to Rome.
