Dear St. Benedict Faith Community, Each year it is important to stop and look over the previous year to see how everything went and if there are any things that we need to change up. THE BELL TOWER is one way we stop to reflect on the past year. It can also provide good data for us to reflect on as we look forward to the next year. We also use it to remind ourselves of all the central activities that give our parish family meaning and purpose.

Last Sunday our psalm response was from Psalm 126. “The Lord has done great things for us; we are filled with joy.” There is no better way to begin everything we do in life than a grateful look at all the blessings God has given us. As you look over this report please start by looking at all the ministries we have and the ways we have made a difference in our neighborhood. We have been very blessed to be allowed to work for God in so many ways.

Besides the work we do to build up the Kingdom of God, we also need to take the time as individuals to grow in our relationship with Christ, and to come to a deeper knowledge about God. Some of the things we do are to give the opportunity for personal growth in our faith for those looking for ways to develop as disciples of Christ.

One of the most valuable ways we develop our discipleship is at Mass. By praying together as a community, and by listening to and reflecting on the Words of Sacred Scripture, we can find a deeper understanding of who we are and how to live in response to God’s love. I hope you have seen over this past year how we have been working hard to provide a prayerful, spiritual experience at the Masses. And we have been trying to refocus our different Masses to allow us to reach out to various groups as a way of helping everyone connect and grow in their relationship with God. What is also important in this report, is how we take care of all the facilities entrusted to us. These facilities are what allow our ministries the place to function. We need to keep our buildings in good repair. This shows God our appreciation for what we have, and our desire to use these gifts to accomplish His work. In this report you will find information about all the work that was done and some of the plans as we continue this year.

Now all of this is possible because of the generosity of our parishioners and benefactors. This report also details the financial resources that you have donated for the parish. And it spells out how we have spent that money for our work. We hope this is helpful as a picture of who we are and what we have been doing.

There are four main lay leadership bodies which help guide St. Benedict Parish. The Pastoral Council watches over our overall Mission and helps set the vision for our complete community. The Finance Council oversees and helps govern the use of our financial resources. The School Advisory Board supports the vision and direction of the largest of our ministries: the Parish School. And the Facilities Committee examines all of our facilities and helps set priorities for the development, care, and maintenance of the parish plant. We are deeply appreciative of all the hard work that all of the volunteers on these committees do to make St. Benedict a stronger Faith Community.

I hope you enjoy this report. It is a great look at this wonderful and amazing parish. While it cannot give a complete examination of everything that has been a part of this past fiscal year, it does give a summary view at what makes St. Benedict such a great Faith Family to belong to. Divine Renovation Our annual report is a look back into the past fiscal year. It is an opportunity to see how the blessings the parish received have been used to build the Kingdom of God in our neighborhood. But the parish is a living entity and cannot be defined only by the past. It must learn from the past and continue to move confidently into the future, guided by Christ, Our Savior.

With this in mind, let’s take a quick look at something we are doing to move into the future. Cardinal Cupich invited the whole Archdiocese to relook at itself, remember again the mission it has been entrusted with

by Christ, and refocus itself to accomplish that mission. He called this effort “Renew My Church”. Groupings of parishes will look at ways they can work together to transform their local communities. The focus of Renew My Church is to make disciples, build communities, and inspire witness. This all starts, however, with us remembering who we are and what Christ has called us to do.

To prepare for when we enter the active phase of Renew My Church we are taking time now to remember our Call and Mission as Disciples of Christ. We started this process last year as our Parish Council and Pastoral Staff read and discussed the book, “Divine Renovation: Bringing your Parish from Maintenance to Mission”. This year we are spreading out the discussion. All parishioners who would like to join in this discussion are invited to participate. We are all reading the book and following the discussion guide.

We meet on the 2nd Tuesday of each month in Beaven Hall at 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. where we begin with prayer and any important announcements. We continue with the questions in the reading guide. At the end of the meeting, we gather our responses and post them on the St. Benedict website under the Divine Renovation tab. If you have not yet joined in the discussions, but you would like to participate, please talk to any of the pastoral staff members and we can help you get started.

By recalling the mission Christ entrusted us with, and reflecting on what a parish can look like if it dedicates itself to that mission, we will look at our community and together determine how we will move forward. The hope is that we will find ourselves wanting to deepen our communion with Christ and each other, and feel called to invite others to share this gift of faith. Please join in our book discussion.

Sacramental Life The sacraments are sacred signs. They show Christ’s presence in all the key moments of life: birth, death, coming of age, community leadership, the most basic relationships of family, our daily struggle to love better, and, in the Eucharist, our daily life in communion with the God we worship. The sacraments confer grace and show what grace does in us. They penetrate us with the life of Christ. And when we come to those perfect moments in the life of grace, when we act like graced people by truly participating in the sacraments, the sacramental life of grace is fulfilled and renewed in us, and so the sacraments drive us forward, as well.

CONTINUING THE LEGACY If you have attended one of our 9am Masses, you have probably heard our parish choir. Over the past year, the choir has grown immensely, both in membership and musical skill, as they have lead us in sung prayer each week. Last June, they were selected to be featured in an episode of “Sing 4 Him”, an international documentary series that features Catholic choirs. This October the choir embarked on a pilgrimage to Ireland, and sang in numerous historic churches and cathedrals. We have gone from a group that, as recently as four years ago, was struggling to a thriving and healthy ministry.

RENEWED FOCUS ON PRAYER We have very intentionally started to pray together as a choir. We begin and end each rehearsal with a prayer. For the final prayer, all present are invited to offer up petitions. After we offer the petitions, we sing/pray one of our pieces, offering our song to God for our intentions. We have found that this simple act has helped us to remember that we are not a performing ensemble, but rather a group dedicated to helping our parish pray well. It has also helped build community within our group.

COMMUNITY SUPPORT We could not continue our wonderful choral tradition without the support of our community. Because of the generosity of our parishioners, we were able to meet and surpass the $10k fundraising goal that we set for last year’s Christmas concert. We are also grateful to all those that support our ministry through prayer, especially those that attend our 9am Mass each week and sing along with us from the pews.

Members from the St. Benedict Choir, along with other non-musical folks, spent the week touring, singing, and praying together throughout the magnificent country of Ireland. Throughout the trip they offered up a special intention for the people of St. Benedict Parish back home.

This pilgrimage to Ireland gave the group from St. Benedict a special glimpse into a unique part of the world. Ireland is an ancient land, a marvelous blend of historic and contemporary beauty, abundant with religious ecclesiastical centers, illuminated manuscripts, ancient ruins, stunning panoramic views, legendary castles surrounded by moats, and the romantic and rugged regions of lakes and bogs. Ireland is filled with traditional music and magnetic people, which made us feel right at home.

Adult and Child CatecHEsis Commission

The adult and child Catechesis Commission is the collection of ministries dedicated to life-long learning around the celebration of sacraments and around different milestones in our lives We are blessed to have such a large and dynamic Religious Education Department here at St. Ben’s that is supported by many dedicated volunteer ministers. Many ministries are covered, including K-8 Religious Education classes for St. Ben’s children who do not attend our school, an RCIA program for those wishing to be welcomed into the Church, a SPRED program to help those with special needs come to Christ, Children’s Liturgy of the Word to preach the Gospel to the young ones in our community, Baptismal Preparation for new parents, Pre-Cana Marriage Preparation for those preparing for the Sacrament, and Adult Education for our parents and parishioners.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION • The Religious Education Department is run by Daniel J. Hughes, the Director of Catechesis and Nancy Uczen, the Administrative Assistant.

• Our Catechetical Leader for RE is Michelle Stevens, our lead 2nd grade Catechist.

• Over 250 families send their children to St. Ben’s for Religious Education.

• In the 2017/18 year there were 321 children attending.

• This year we have 315 attending.

• In 2017/18 we had 142 receive First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion • This year we will have 132 receiving those Sacraments.

• In 2017/18 we had 69 teens receive the Sacrament of Confirmation.

• This year we will have approximately 91 receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation.

• The SPRED team, led by Pat Woodhouse ‘60, helps to guide those with special needs closer to Christ.

• We hosted 48 young children for our Vacation Bible School in July 2018. We had 14 young people from our Youth Ministry assist us in creating a successful and unique experience in connecting our young people to Christ in a deeper way.

PRE-CANA • Gilbert and Stephanie Tolentino host Pre-Cana Marriage Preparation twice a year at their lovely home nearby.

RCIA • We have a dedicated team, led by Mary Jo Shaver, which helps to guide those being welcomed into the Church.

• Last year we welcomed 10 into the Church and this year it will be 5.

• Those being welcomed come from a variety of faith traditions.

BAPTISMAL PREP • Our Pastoral Associate, Elaine Lindia and Daniel J. Hughes, our Director of Catechesis, team up to prepare new parents to have their child Baptized at St. Ben’s.

• From September 2017 to September 2018, 168 children were baptized.

CHILDREN’S LITURGY OF THE WORD • Children’s Liturgy of the Word at our 10:30am Sunday Mass is led by Deacon Dave, Kim McMillan, and Sara Furie.

• It is an amazing way to bring the Gospel to some of our youngest parishioners.

ADULT EDUCATION • This year we began hosting Chicago Catholic Scripture School on campus for those parishioners looking to more deeply connect to Christ through study of Sacred Scripture.

• We host a number of Catechetical Conversations for our parents who have children preparing for Sacraments.

Education Commission “REACHING NEW HEIGHTS 2020” – IMPLEMENTING THE ST. BENEDICT PREPARATORY SCHOOL STRATEGIC PLAN WHEN THE BOLD DECISION WAS MADE TO FOCUS ON PK-8 CATHOLIC EDUCATION AT ST. BENEDICT PREPARATORY SCHOOL, IT WAS DETERMINED THAT WE NEEDED TO REVISE OUR FOUNDATIONAL DOCUMENTS. If Catholic schools are to thrive in the 21st century, they need to be relevant, excellent and transformational. If Catholic schools are to form the next generation of young people in our faith, they need to not only teach the rich traditions and history of our Church, but help our young people see how empowering the Catholic teachings and tenets can be, especially in our modern era.

It is our intention to provide a leading Chicago Catholic elementary education here at St. Benedict. We have been blessed with the resources, the facilities, and the support to lead the way. Our foundational documents provide the framework for the next phase of our parish school’s future.

It is important that the foundational documents of a school don’t just reside in a binder on the top shelf in some office, or look polished in a frame hung on the wall.

At St. Benedict, we use the foundational documents to make decisions on programming, spending, and hiring.

We use the foundational documents to choose curricular programs, redesign spaces, and plan teacher professional development. The foundational documents are living words that guide the day-to-day operations, as well as long-term planning. We are proud to roll out all of our foundational documents in this year’s Annual Report. The school advisory board, school and parish administration, faculty and staff, as well as members of our community were invited to provide feedback during the drafting and FOUNDATIONAL DOCUMENTS WORKSHOP BROUGHT revision stages of these documents. These foundational TOGETHER A WIDE VARIETY OF CONSTITUENTS documents reflect a year-long journey of writing, listening, and revising. We’d like to thank the members of the writing committee who spent countless hours writing, presenting, listening and revising these statements: Karla Stearns (School Board Member), Megan Harris (5th Grade Teacher), Erico Ramirez (Upper School Spanish Teacher) and Phil Siegel (Innovations Coach).

REACHING NEW HEIGHTS 2020 – ADDITIONAL GOALS OF THE ST. BENEDICT PREPARATORY SCHOOL ADVISORY BOARD IN 2018-19 The SBPS School Advisory Board is made up of several committees commissioned to work in partnership with the pastor and school administration to realize the goals of the school’s strategic plan, Reaching New Heights 2020. Each of the committees determines its annual goals from appropriate categories of the strategic plan. The committees listed below will be working on the following goals:

PRAYER BUDDIES 2018

STRATEGIC PLANNING AND POLICY COMMITTEE GOALS • Work with School Advisory Board chair to create a system for board evaluation and exit survey for board members • Devise annual parent survey, implement, and track feedback • Engage with the HSA with a joint recruiting effort for new board members MARKETING AND PUBLIC RELATIONS COMMITTEE GOALS • Support parent ambassador program in efforts to attract and retain school families • In collaboration with advancement staff, develop key messaging, elevator pitch, and standard communication to be rolled-out to internal stakeholders • Collaborate with advancement staff and other key stakeholders to develop student retention programs • Analyze enrollment trends and commitments for key drop-off areas and identify a way to more deeply engage with those families that are most likely to leave • Create and implement a robust marketing and public relations plan to increase enrollment and strengthen student retention CATHOLIC EDUCATION COMMITTEE GOALS • Develop a robust Service Learning Program with a stronger partnership with the parish to develop projects, opportunities, relationships within the community to solidify the connection between service and curriculum.

SCHOOL FINANCE COMMITTEE GOALS • Update and build five year financial model with different scenarios • Continue to evaluate effectiveness of teacher retention initiatives • Evaluate tuition increase on per student basis year over year TECHNOLOGY COMMITTEE GOALS • Identify and ensure ongoing technology infrastructure needs are satisfied in a cost-effective manner- supporting the One-to-One laptop environment for grades K-8.

• Assess technology support needs and determine the most effective and efficient solution for ensuring regular maintenance, as well as emergency support FACILITIES COMMITTEE GOALS Currently advising on air-conditioning project for building one, the heating plant, electrical upgrades and more.

FULL STEAM AHEAD In recent years there has been a growing focus on the need to better prepare students for higher education and equip them with the skills and knowledge they will need to be successful innovators in a 21st century workforce. STEAM is an educational approach to learning that uses Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics as access points for guiding student inquiry, communication, creativity, collaboration and critical thinking. An important part of the St. Benedict Preparatory School’s strategic plan, Reaching New Heights 2020, is the formation of a bold education technology plan that integrates the best that ED tech has to offer with the student learning experience PK-8. This tech plan maps out a total upgrade of our technology infrastructure (completed), the implementation of a one-to-one laptop program K-8 (in progress), as well as upgrading our learning spaces to STEAM spaces (in progress).

By engaging students in the subjects of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math, the STEAM approach aims to spark an interest and life-long love of the arts and sciences in children from an early age. The STEAM disciplines are in all that involve creative processes and none uses just one method for inquiry and investigation. Teaching relevant and necessary skills that will prepare students to become innovators of tomorrow is an integral part of our school mission. The STEAM approach is just one way we will work to achieve our mission.

STEAM LEARNING LABS AT ST. BENEDICT PREP Thanks to the Home and School Association (Fun Run proceeds) and a generous family foundation gift, we have been creating three STEAM learning labs for our students. These STEAM labs span grades preschool through grade 8 so that our students have a seamless integration of STEAM applications throughout their experience here at St. Benedict Prep.

WONDER LAB RENDERING

EARLY CHILDHOOD WONDER LAB (OPENING LATE FALL 2018) We are about ready to open our Wonder Lab for our early childhood students. This lab will be a place for students to explore the concepts of engineering, design, and problem solving with a hands-on, ”digital free” approach. The Wonder Lab will be a place where students will engage in theme-based activities related to the week’s lessons. The room will feature a water table, flexible furniture and more. Older students will be able to use the water table for science lessons as well.

STEM LAB – (FOR GRADES K-5) Over the past year, STEM teacher, Mrs. Jennifer Hoban, has been building our coding, robotics and engineering program with new materials and equipment. This past summer, our STEM Lab got a facelift thanks to part II of a generous family foundation gift. We removed the reading nook, put in new floors, repainted, invested in fluid, flexible furniture, upgraded the electricity and more. Our KGr. 5 students have time to create, collaborate, and problem solve using a variety of materials.

CREATIVE MEDIA LAB (FOR UPPER SCHOOL) This past summer, our old high school computer lab was redesigned as a Creative Media Lab. With funding from the 2017 Fun Run, the space received new carpeting, new paint, as well as two large screen digital televisions, one of them being a touchscreen TV. Additionally, a side room was turned into a video recording room which was completely “greened” to allow for advanced digital recording.

This lab also features high-powered desktop computers capable of running high-end creative digital arts programs as well as a large format printer. This room will be used for school projects that involve making videos, posters, pictures, and more. We will continue to develop this STEAM space and our programs with proceeds from the 2018 Fun Run. FUTURE STEAM SPACES As the high school is phased out, we will be looking to redevelop our spaces so that teachers have a variety of labs and environments to create a diverse, hands-on learning experiences for our students.

SOME FUTURE SPACES INCLUDE: • Global learning lab • Guided play room for early childhood • Re-visioning of the secondary school library • Flexible “collaboration spaces” for large groups of students • We are even taking it outside! Watch for the development of children’s gardens and outdoor STEAM spaces.

ST. BENEDICT PREPARATORY SCHOOL ASPIRE SCORES: ASPIRING TO NEW HEIGHTS For the past three years, the Office of Catholic Schools have been administering the ACT Aspire Summative Assessment to students in grades ROBOTICS FUN IN THE ES STEM LAB WITH MRS. HOBAN 3-8 to measure academic proficiency in English, ABOVE RIGHT: NEW CREATIVE MEDIA LAB Reading, Math and Science according to national standards prescribed by the Common Core Standards and Next Generation Science Standards. Over the course of four days in April, students complete the paper and pencil test comprised of multiple choice and extended written response.

Test questions integrate many different skills and vary in depth of knowledge and critical thinking.

The older the students grow, the amount of questions that require deeper depth of knowledge and higher order thinking skills also increases. The scores reflect knowledge and skills across grade levels, an evolving picture of student growth. Teachers receive a variety of reports that provide many levels of data on group progress as well as individual student growth. The data the school receives also provides longitudinal growth indicators. Since the ASPIRE Assessment is aligned with the more commonly known ACT Test students take for college admissions, the test also can provide some indicators regarding student college readiness, progress with text complexity, and STEM skills.

This actionable data enables our faculty to address students’ strengths, areas for improvement, and student potential. While the teachers use the data for grade level decisions such as student groupings and unit planning, the school also uses the data for school-wide decisions. Below are some of the more recent decisions we’ve made because of trends we have seen in the data: • MATHEMATICS – we introduced a new math program in middle school last year and to 5th grade this school year which helps students solve math problems using a variety of skills and concepts.

Within our first year, it has already helped improve student growth and mastery.

• READING – While we have achieved the average of “Ready” across the board in reading, we believe we can have our students achieve even better. This current year, we added a full-time reading specialist to work with students who need additional reading instruction. The reading specialist will also coach teachers in best literacy teaching strategies. Last year, we also changed our reading instruction in 4th and 5th grades to novel studies with a focus on literature and literary elements. Additionally, we have spent over $15,000 in new guided reading materials for our studentsin grades K-5.

• WRITING – Even though our students are achieving the “Exceeding” level in English, it is important that these skills translate into the act of writing. Last year, there was also an effort to focus on writing skills and essay composition. Our middle school grades also began to pilot the ThinkCerca program, which integrates essay composition, analysis of authentic periodicals, and critical thinking to develop well-constructed, well-informed argumentative writing.

As you can see our students have consistently performed well in all categories, achieving the “Ready” or “Exceeding” levels on average which means we are meeting or exceeding the national benchmarks.

On the school website, readers can see how we compare to the national average, as well as the Office of Catholic Schools average. In 2018, we scored higher than the national average and the OCS average in all content areas at all grade levels. We are proud of our scores, especially knowing that over 15% of our grades 3-8 population have identified special needs and their scores are also figured in these averages. It is proof that creating an Inclusive School helps all students grow and achieve.

Tech Report TECHNOLOGY UPDATES IN 2017-18

The year 2018 has been a revolutionary one for technology at St. Benedict, along with all the other renovations of the parish. In the past year the school has placed a phone, wireless internet and interactive projector in every classroom. In addition, St. Benedict has updated the firewall and purchased new computers for faculty/staff, which are necessary to provide 21st century learning. With the investment in the last two years on a technology overhaul for the school and parish, the new infrastructure can support all new possibilities, even crossing the bar into what was considered standard in a school.

This year has brought several changes that affect everyone in the school and parish on a daily basis, and may inspire others elsewhere to do the same. BluePoint has been among those changes. BluePoint is a revolutionary active alert system that acts similar to a fire alarm, alerting the police if an intruder enters the St. Benedict community. The parish also installed a new state-of-the-art Salient camera surveillance system and Axis robust servers to retain and process all that information. These “eye in the sky” improvements, along with BluePoint, were added to keep the St. Benedict community safe.

The school also integrated new student devices, made in America by BAK, a relatively new technology company. BAK, which has been breaking ground in the student device world, came heavily recommended

by Microsoft, and sponsors a world-class customer service program to help provide the best learning environment for our students.

Lastly, the technology department has migrated St. Benedict from Google Suite over to Microsoft Office 365. This significant change required a heavy learning curve for faculty, staff and students.

While cameras, alarms, and laptops offer a more resilient, safe, robust and productive environment, Office 365 touches on all these factors because it brings more functionality than Google. The system is more secure and fosters innovation to accomplish more tasks. Office 365 is a means for communication - not only for email communication, but for internal collaboration, classroom assessment and activity, program communication among members, storage for files and notes, a business enterprise platform for tools like Word and Excel, and a way to record all that goes on at St. Ben’s for future use and reflection.

The technology support team continues to evolve initiatives put in place years prior, build on its successes and find new ways to make a name for the organization. Throughout this hard work, the team always is mindful that without God none of this would be possible, and that it is for God that they work so hard to bring these tools and security to the next generation of followers.

YOUTH MINISTRY

In 2018 we continued building connections between parish ministries and youth ministry. This quote from the book, The Godbearing Life, is a reminder of the importance of our young people working within the parish to see others, and to be seen by others, who live their faith. It is in the eyes of a person of faith that young people may catch a glimpse the way God sees them.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THIS YEAR INCLUDE: • The success of our monthly visits that began in September 2017, to ST PAUL HOUSE TO PLAY BINGO WITH THE RESIDENTS. The youth are enjoying the chance to spend time with the senior residents and the residents enjoy our visits.

• FRIGHT WALK continues to be a fun way to get our young people involved in raising funds for youth ministry and building relationships within the parish. It has been a successful “fun- raiser”.

• Inviting the youth ministry to lead a prayer experience of the LIVING STATIONS and seeing how it moved their hearts and the hearts of those who attended.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL

• VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL and the commitment that so many of our teens brought to participating and leading the little children of the parish. This was a new endeavor for Youth Ministry and Religious Education to lead the summer faith experience for the kids of our parish. If the volume of songs sung and laughter were any indication of the joy that was present, and I know they are, it was a great success. I was impressed by the way that our teens entered into this commitment and shared their faith so enthusiastically.

• Our LORD HAVE MERCY SERVICE WEEK is consistently at capacity and a second 2-day experience was added to help provide all who wanted to serve a chance to be involved.

• Being able to bring 5 teens, with the support of the Holy Name Society, to NOTRE DAME VISION. In the words of one of the participants: “This experience has given me more confidence to live my faith.”

• Youth Ministry and the Human Concerns Commission ministry working together to raise awareness about Hunger in our community and to SUPPORT THE COMMON PANTRY by participating in the 33rd annual Hunger Walk.

It is the hope that every young person who desires to share their gifts and talent in gratitude for God’s mercy and love, will find the support and encouragement they need from St Benedict Youth Ministry.

Human Concerns Commission

The Human Concerns Commission promotes the Word and manifests the love of Jesus Christ by helping those who are in need, following the principle that “whatever you do to the least of my people, you do unto me.” (St. Matthew 25:40)

We continued our support of the COMMON FOOD PANTRY collecting needed supplies every month in church. Our St Vincent de Paul Society ensured the Pantry received the collection. Members of the SVDP society also continued their tradition of delivering Christmas baskets of food collected by our school students to families in need. With the generosity of our parishioners, we were able to continue to provide lunches to all in need every weekday in our rectory. We continued to offer our Ministry Dinners on Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter, where over 300 people come to share a meal with others in the community.

OUR CHRISTMAS GIVING TREE served the needs of several ministries including St. Joseph Village, St Paul’s House and Maryville Academy.

Our HEALTH COMMITTEE continues to offer Zumba classes and also held a flu shot offering for all parishioners.

ST. BENEDICT SANCTUARY partnered with the House of Good Shepherd and collected needed items for the residents. They continue efforts to raise awareness of domestic violence and prepared purple ribbons for all to wear to show support for the sisters and brothers in our community dealing with domestic abuse.

OUR PEACE AND JUSTICE COMMITTEE partnered with other parishes to offer a presentation on mental health awareness. A presentation also was given to educate people about the issue of human trafficking. During our CRS Rice Bowl campaign, videos were created by ministry representatives to educate our students on our outreach efforts in the community.

A MINISTRY OF PRAISE effort began inviting homebound parishioners to become “Ministers of Praise.”

Each month a newsletter is sent to their homes with prayer intentions for our community. Their prayers help them to realize they play an important role in the parish by being a spiritual lifeline and support for the community.

Parishioners also trained to be part of another new ministry – THE MINISTRY OF CONSOLATION AND COMPASSION. When someone in our community loses a loved one, the ministers are there to offer the support of the community by attending wake services and funeral Masses.

All of our ministry members model Christ’s concern for people, both individually and collectively in our community. In an effort to expand the promotion and preservation of human dignity and human solidarity, a new PEACE AND JUSTICE COMMITTEE was formed. A survey was conducted by the committee to determine the issues of concern. Committee members partnered with Heartland Alliance to offer an educational event on how to support refugee families. Efforts for Respect Life and our CRS Rice Bowl campaign continue and the committee will be working on new offerings for education and outreach in the coming year.

The St Benedict Parish Life Commission is the collection of ministries that allow us to celebrate with the community and continue to support a fun, family-friendly neighborhood. This commission has many different branches offering a wide array of social opportunities for all age groups and including:

LADIES SOCIETY The Ladies Society has been part of our parish community since 1954 and is a chapter of the Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women of Chicago, Vicariate II. We are a inclusive community of Catholic women whose mission is to support, empower and educate women in spirituality, leadership and service. The society gathers once a month on the first Wednesday from September - May, ending the year with the May Crowning. This year we are alternating our meetings between mornings and evenings to accommodate all women of the parish.

For over 40 years this society has made homemade cookies baskets for St. Paul’s House residents and our daily sandwich program for the poor, prior to Christmas. We have already had the Head of Development from House of Mary and Joseph speak at our evening meeting. We hope to bring in more speakers who address various topics of interest relating to women and participate in service related activities to best serve our community.

HOLY NAME SOCIETY is the parish men’s club since 1917. Its mission is to promote devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus and to assist each other to grow in holiness. The apostolate of the society is to assist in parish ministries by performing the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy. They have sponsored numerous events in the past such as Donut Sunday and Lunch with Santa, as well as participated as volunteers for Benfest and Oktoberfest.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS Last year the Knights of Columbus at St Benedict, Council 15052, did the following to strengthen our Community around St Benedict: Conducted the ID Drive with proceeds of $1,000 going to SPRED; Continued the Keep Christ in Christmas campaign for the school and Religious Education students; Held two Food Drives collecting over 3,000lb of food for the Common Pantry; Ran two Fish Fries, raising over $2,000 for scholarships and charites; Provided coffee and donuts for the Religious Education parents through our “Ease into Sunday” campaign; Maintained the Fire for the Easter Vigil Mass; Partnered with the Holy Name Society for Donut Sundays; Launched the Baby Shower Drive between Mothers’ and Father’s Day to provide supplies for babies and parents in need

WELCOMING MINISTRY Every month the Welcoming Ministry is given the list of newly registered parishioners. We send them a letter and then telephone each of them with an invitation to be welcomed to the parish during a Sunday Mass. At that time, they are blessed and welcomed by the priests, the Welcoming Ministry representative and the congregation. A couple months later Welcoming sends a post card to the new parishioners letting them know they are remembered, with the hope of encouraging parish activity participation. This past fiscal year approximately sixtyfive new parishioner families took advantage of the opportunity to be welcomed. Nine very active parishioners represent the Welcoming Ministry.

WOMEN’S BOOK CLUB has been a ministry at St. Benedict’s for 18 years.

We meet on the 3rd Thursday of each month, except during the summer, in the Pine Room in the Rectory. We have approximately 20 members, but are always welcoming to anyone with a love of reading. Twice a year we vote on selections suggested by members to read for the upcoming months. We read all genres, from classics to current titles, fiction to non-fiction. We also support the St. Benedict community with donations to Benfest, Oktoberfest, and the Gala.

ST. BEN’S YOUNG ADULT MINISTRY seeks to engage men and women in their 20’s and 30’s to promote full integration in the Catholic faith community by bringing them together in faith, fun, and fellowship to serve St. Benedict’s Parish and the surrounding community. Over the last year, we have continued to host a monthly Wine and Cheese Social after the 6:30pm Mass and conducted two 6-week faith sharing groups using the ARISE series. We have volunteered at parish events and hosted a Simple Supper in Lent. In collaboration with other parishes, we hosted Theology on Tap (a 4-week speaker series) during the summer and plan to host a talk on the ethics of consumerism in January.

YOUNG ADULTS RCYA The RCYA is a young adult ministry. We organize a softball league in the summer, and sponsor Theology on Tap. We have Lent and Advent prayer groups, and also sponsor a Rosary program. Our group raises money for Catholic school tuition at several parishes. We are a social and a Spiritual group.

SCOUTS Scouting is alive and well with Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, Daisies, and Brownies who meet regularly and participate in various activities and outings. Girl Scouts have the following girls participating: Daisy Scouts (1st grade) -24; Brownies (2nd and 3rd)- 26; Juniors (4th and 5th) - 24; Cadettes (6th and 7th) -8; Seniors (8th) - 8. The cadettes and seniors completed 10 service projects last year, including collecting over 1,000 books for underprivileged kids, sewing quilt tops for kids in hospitals and packing rice and beans for 80 families at the common pantry. Daisy Scouts through Junior Scouts continue to work on various skills badges. Cub Scout Pack 3865 has over 80 boys registered from neighborhood schools grades K-5 including 20 students from St. Benedict. This October we held our fall campout in Tippacannoe, IN and had 112 boys & family members registered. We also sponsor fun meetings such as this year’s Halloween themed pack meeting.

GALA 2018 The Gala this past year was held at Morgan MFG in the West Loop and was attended by over 450 guests. Our Fund-ANeed raised over $39,000 for our campus security camera project.

The silent and live auctions were a big hit even with mobile bidding issues, thanks to the generosity of our guests. Thank you to the Gala committee for another huge success.

This past year with Lisa Franqui and Jody Roy, St. Kateri Center was able to continue regular programming and introduce new programs and events for the Native Community.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM LAST YEAR: • The awarding of 6 scholarships to Native Catholic children attending Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Chicago last year and 8 scholarships this year.

• In July, we sent participants to the 2018 UNITY youth conference and to the 2018 Tekakwitha Conference in Tacoma WA, the world’s largest gathering for Native American Catholics. At the latter we were able to have a day pilgrimage to the Lumi Nation home of St. Kateri Tekakwitha’s final miracle that made her a Saint.

• Our annual St. Kateri Pow Wow with the theme “Honoring Our Youth” was held in the St. Benedict Gymnasium.

• An 8-week Ojibway language POW WOW DANCE CEREMONY course was provided in partnership with American Indian Center and Chicago Public Schools – American Indian Education Program as was a Navajo language weekend workshop and a Dakota/Lakota weekend language workshop. Through each of these workshops, we learned to say the Lord’s Prayer in these three languages that we now use at our Sunday Masses.

A NUMBER OF PRESENTATIONS WERE MADE THIS YEAR: • A 2-day presentation for a group of 30 visitors from France.

• A one day presentation for a group of 20 students from North Park theological seminary.

• In November, we had a Pow Wow 101 event in partnership with Cook County Forest Preserve and American Indian Education Program and had over 100 people attend. Our youth did a dance performance in their regalia and shared the significance and purpose of style regalia each was wearing.

• “Young Native Leaders of Chicago” program launched in September 2017 by our center and the Chicago Public School - American Indian Education Program. It included a fundraiser event to be able to give back to an organization of their choice.

GUEST SPEAKERS INCLUDED: • Cheryl Bear, from the Dakelh Nation in British Columbia, Canada, is a writer and multi-award winning singer/songwriter who shared stories of indigenous life through story and song about her faith in Christ and traditional values.

• Dr. Damian Costello, a Catholic theologian who specializes in the intersection of Catholic theology, Indigenous spiritual traditions, and colonial history, visited and gave a presentation at the Kateri Center. He is a well-known authority on Black Elk, the Lakota holy man who became a Catholic and is now up for canonization in the Catholic Church.

OUR OUTREACH INCLUDES: • Mass celebrated at 11am every 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month, followed by potluck feasts.

• The St. Kateri Youth Circle meets the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of each month. The youth have gained a better understanding of the life of St. Kateri Tekakwitha, learned culture teachings and how to make traditional regalia. These youth had the opportunity to learn about the traditional teachings of the Nookmis Drum (hand drum). They made their very own hand drum from start to finish, were a part of the birthing ceremony, and learned songs. The group also attended the archdiocesan sponsored youth rally, Holy Fire.

• Senior Luncheons on the third Thursdays of each month. American Indian Health Services of Chicago provides blood and glucose testing and health workshops.

• Indigenous Women’s Healing Circle is hosted on the 3rd Thursday of the month to promote and bring healing among the Native American Community. Women traditionally play a very important role in the life of Native American people. They have not only been mothers of children, they were essential to the tribe as they were teachers, builders, warriors, farmers and craftswomen. This includes cultural presentations, teachings and traditional prayers. They also learn how honoring our patroness, St. Kateri, means becoming more involved with ecology and be environmentally conscious.

FACILITIES PROJECT UPDATE (2017-2018)

Sprucing Up the Campus FORWARD IN OUR FAITH UPDATE CAPITAL CAMPAIGN (2015-2020) Through fervent prayer, generous teamwork, and formidable generosity, our parish capital campaign Forward in Our Faith continues to turn our dreams into realities. The initial campaign consisted of three project phases: • COMPLETED: THE COMPLETE REPLACEMENT OF THE 100-YEAROLD SLATE ROOF AND ALL NECESSARY TUCK POINTING AROUND THE EXTERIOR OF THE CHURCH. • Remove and replace the underlayment and slate on the upper roof and conical roof on the south side of the church; installation of new snow guards, copper flashing, gutters, and downspouts; as well as for the lower aisle roofs.

• MAJOR TUCK POINTING REPAIRS around several parts of the church, largely on the north, south and east sides of the church • THE REMOVAL OF PAINT FROM THE FAÇADE OF THE CHURCH, restoring the original limestone, the opening and assessment of the front limestone steps of the church, and the replacement of the cracked clay gutter sewer pipes underground • RE-ESTABLISHMENT OF THE LIGHTNING RODS at the top of the bell tower and at the top of the roof copper cross.

• The final part of the project was the RESTORATION OF THE FAILING PAINT AND PLASTER IN THE CHURCH completed in time for the 100th birthday celebration • ALMOST COMPLETE: THOROUGHLY TUCK POINT THE FAÇADE OF THE SCHOOL BUILDING (Building 1) on Leavitt Street as well as install new lintels and windows.

• FINAL PLANNED PHASE: BUILD A NEW ADDITION TO OUR PARISH SCHOOL TO HOUSE NEW AND INNOVATIVE EDUCATIONAL CENTERS. However, due to the phasing out of the high school, the parish has reassessed this need and has begun to move forward with plans to renovate and upgrade the school building (Building 4) on Bell Street with new and innovative educational centers. Watch for more details in the future about this endeavor.

CAMPAIGN EXPENSES INCLUDE: • $1,614,125: Final cost of the work on the church building • $242,485: General expenses to administer the campaign • $157,058: The first two of five gifts to the Archdiocese of Chicago for the “To Teach Who Christ Is” Campaign • $70,394: Structural reports and interior church repair work • $61,600: Asbestos abatement throughout the tunnel system of the campus for future heating work • $50,000: Deposit for Leavitt school building windows • $26,200: Deposit for Leavitt school building tuck pointing • $20,000: Gift to our sharing parish, Our Lady of the Snows • $18,750: Preliminary plans for the renovation of Building 4

ADDITIONAL PROJECTS COMPLETED • JANUARY LIGHTNING STRIKE: Repairs were completed to the mechanism for our six bells and the clock in the bell tower. The repairs also included the re-wiring of our church chandeliers and the replacement of a blown-out thermostatic control system for our boilers. This project was funded by an insurance claim.

• ASBESTOS ABATEMENT: Over the Easter break, the parish completed extensive asbestos abatement in the following areas: tunnels of the TUNNEL ASBESTOS ABATEMENT elementary school buildings along Leavitt and Byron Streets, the convent mechanical room, Room 142 in anticipation of the new early childhood Wonder Lab, and a 3rd floor bathroom that sustained some damage from a leaky roof. This project was funded from a variety of sources: Forward in Our Faith, Build Our Future and the New Family Fee. • TUCK POINTING ON THE CONVENT BUILDING has already begun.

This project will be finished in the next few weeks. The project also included the removal of the deteriorated chimney and the realigning of misaligned limestone at the top of the walls. New frosted windows and lintels will be installed to replace broken glass-block windows. Funding for this project will come from Forward in Our Faith (for the scope PIPE REPAIRS COMPLETED from Phase II of the capital campaign) and from Build Our Future (for the expansion of the scope of work to include the entire convent.)

• THE ROOF TO THE GARAGE, which houses the priests’ cars as well as our parish maintenance equipment, had been leaking badly for years. The stone gravel roof was replaced with a strong rubber roof for a longer life expectancy. A new drainpipe will be added in order to properly drain

standing water on the roof. This project was funded through the general operating maintenance budget.

• ONE OF THE MAIN SEWER DRAINS IN THE COURTYARD HAD COLLAPSED. The brick foundation needed to be rebuilt along with a concrete top being added for long-term endurance. This project was funded through the general operating maintenance budget.

• LASTLY, OUR PARISH PURCHASED A GENTLY-USED KUBOTA TRACTOR that will replace our badly-worn jeep that was used for snow plowing. The new Kubota includes a salt spreader and a new blade to better clean the courtyard and our sidewalks during winter storms. The tractor can also be used for parish events such as BenFest or Oktoberfest to assist in moving items across the campus. This new piece of equipment was funded from the proceeds of the sale of the large bus sold earlier this year. Special thanks to Dan Kattner and Tom Molloy for their “road trip” to pick-up the new maintenance toy.

SO, WHAT’S ON THE DOCKET FOR OTHER CAPITAL IMPROVEMENTS THIS YEAR? • THE SIX CONDENSATION PUMP STATIONS MENTIONED LAST YEAR ARE FINALLY GETTING REPLACED. There are 6 old heating system pumps strategically placed throughout the campus. None of the six are working effectively.

Some of the pumps have been completely bypassed altogether. The purpose of the pumps is to collect and return condensate from remote areas of the campus back to the boilers. However, since many are not functioning and leaking a significant amount of water, warm water is not returning to our boilers for reheating. Rather, cold city water is constantly refilling the boilers. New condensation pump stations will not only help our parish be more energy efficient, but will also help to extend the life expectancy of our boilers already on borrowed time. As part of this project, replacement of actuators and valves NEW SCHOOL WINDOWS BEING throughout the campus will also take place.

INSTALLED THIS OCTOBER • THE NEW WINDOWS FOR THE SCHOOL BUILDING ON LEAVITT STREET HAVE BEEN DELIVERED AND ARE CURRENTLY BEING INSTALLED. We hope that the installation will be finished by the beginning of November.

• OVER THE NEXT FEW MONTHS, THE PARISH WILL BE REPLACING ITS ELECTRICAL PANEL DATING BACK TO THE 1950’S. This panel feeds most of the campus and is in bad shape. Conversations with electricians and with ComEd are already taking place as to how best move forward.

Financial Highlights IN LIGHT OF THIS SUNDAY’S GOSPEL ABOUT THE PARABLE OF THE TALENTS, THE PARISH HAS MADE SIGNIFICANT STRIDES TO BE A GOOD AND FAITHFUL SERVANT WITH THE FINANCIAL RESOURCES WE HAVE GRATEFULLY RECEIVED. SOME QUICK HIGHLIGHTS:

CHURCH • INCOME: Sunday collections continue on their downward trend. The parish is looking at ways to address increasing the Sunday collection with more extensive use of GiveCentral. While many have been consistent in their giving, many have not increased their contributions to the parish in many years. There is also a concerted effort to reach out to those who have fallen away from regular Sunday giving. Miscellaneous income includes stole fees (funerals, weddings, baptisms), stipends for Masses, bulletin rebates, non-Sunday donations, and vigil candles, and is also down this past year. * Expenses fortunately were down this past year. However, the parish continues to look for ways to decrease our spending by encouraging better stewardship of our utilities, maintenance and office needs. Parish-wide, our vendor contracts are reviewed regularly for the best possible pricing options. Miscellaneous expenses includes ministry formation, Parish Mission, hospitality, other special programs.

SCHOOL • With such a large school, an audit of our tuition and fee collection occurs every year to ensure proper billing and accounting for all families. Outside funding sources includes scholarship money received from Big Shoulders and other scholarship agencies. Advancement appeals include all of scholarship and alumni appeals, phon-a-thon and reunion gifts. Miscellaneous income is primarily athletic proceeds along with vending and building use income. With less enrollment, our income was down in the last fiscal year, but matched with a drop in our expenses.

• Our largest expense is staffing. We strive to work hard at appropriate staffing while making sure the academic needs of our PK-12 student population are adequately met. Miscellaneous income includes hospitality, campus ministry, admissions, advancement office, graduation, school nurse, guidance and athletic expenses. Here, as mentioned above, our expenses were down this past fiscal year.

EXTRAORDINARY • Last year, the parish received a generous bequest which accounts for the large income for “Build Our Future.” Build Our Future was an account set-up under our former pastor to cover usually emergency expenses that were not budgeted. The funds come from 10% of all parish fundraising as well as any large gifts that come to the parish like bequests, etc.

• In February 2018, the lease for our parish vehicles (one van, one large bus and one small bus) was paid-in-full. Soon after, the parish sold the large bus since the bus was not used extensively anymore. The proceeds of the sale were used to purchase a Kuboda maintenance vehicle for better transporting of items around the campus and for snow plowing. The rest of the bus sale proceeds went into Build Our Future.

CASH BALANCES • Year-over-year, our cash balances remain in a strong position. Our assets outweigh our liabilities. The surplus in our restricted accounts continues to allow us to update our parish infrastructure.

• Our parish bulletin stewardship page updates our financial picture on a weekly basis for better communication of our parish assets and restricted funds as well as updates to our parish capital projects.

IMPORTANT ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS OF OUR PROFOUND GRATITUDE • ANNUAL SCHOOL FUND: OVER $165,000 (November 2017) Thank you to all the parents and grandparents that supported this important School Advisory Board appeal to close the gap between what it costs to educate and actual cost of tuition. Last year’s gap was $850 per student at St. Benedict Preparatory School. This year’s goal is $225,000 with initiatives to retain our teachers through stipends and protect our campus with the new BluePoint security system.

• MASS AND GALA: $150,000 (March 2018) net proceeds after Build our Future contribution and Technology Fund-A-Need ANNUAL SCHOOL FUND 2017 ($39,000 towards our new camera system). As always, it was a great celebration of our parish community. Thank you to Tom and Laura Burns and Isabelle Ryan for their leadership and to their team of volunteers who pulled off another extraordinary event.

SAVE THE DATE FOR THIS YEAR’S GALA ON SATURDAY, MARCH 23, 2019.

• BENFEST: $49,000 (July 2017) St. Benedict Parish celebrated our patron saint’s feast day with Benfest 2018, the weekend of July 20th-22nd. Despite an overcast weekend, the festival hosted approximately 5,000 people over the course of the 3 days with food provided by local favorites (Dos Riccos, Wrigley BBQ and Cookie Spin), entertainment on two stages and activities & vendors lining two city blocks and our campus courtyard. Festival raised $35,000 and was divided among parish and school operating budgets. Although a decline in revenue from prior years, the festival experienced a 40% growth in parish sponsorship participation (Benfest Friend – BFF program) and benefited from the Parish’s annual sponsorship program. Looking forward, the Benfest committee has already started planning Benfest 2019, so MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR JULY 19-21, 2019.

• OKTOBERFEST: $21,000 (October 2017) Carnival rides, beer and German music can mean only one thing, Oktoberfest at St. Benedict’s. This family-oriented affair brings not only financial resources for our parish, but brings together generations of family and friends for a fun-filled event. Thank you to the Kattner family and to Nicole Donoso for their leadership of this event. For countless number of years, Peter Kattner organized and led this important parish event. For years to come, his memory will live on specifically through this event. This year’s event (2018) raised a record $21,000.

• HOME SCHOOL ASSOCIATION: GARAGE SALE $30,000 AND FUNRUN $110,000 (September 2017) There are so many people to thank on the HSA for the variety of events that they host and the multiple ways they support our parish school. Proceeds from these events go to fund teacher bonuses, classroom grants, technology needs and new this coming year, a Wonderlab for our early childhood program, plus much more. STEWARDSHIP: A LOOK AT OUR PRIORITIES OF PRAYER, SERVING AND SHARING This Sunday’s Gospel about the Commandments of the Lord is an excellent example of a way of stewardship. All that we are and all that we have been given is a gift from the Lord. Stewards are grateful and generous people; of their time by praying, of their talents by serving and of their treasure by sharing. Do we love the Lord, our God, with all our heart, body, mind and soul? Do we respond generously with our prayer, service and sharing to show our love of the Lord?

Too many of us lack the vision or compassion to be true followers of the Lord. The reality is that when we think of stewardship and of giving time, talent and treasure we need to start by looking at the time we spend with God in prayer. Prayer helps us recognize all the gifts that God has given to us and to be grateful for them. Prayer gives us the strength to set aside our own wants and give to God first. When we have nothing else to give, we can always give prayer. Stewards are grateful and generous people; of their time by praying, of their talents by serving and of their treasure by sharing. So, I ask, are you a good steward? Do you receive God’s gifts gratefully? Do you nurture God’s gifts responsibly? Do you share God’s gifts justly and charitably?

In our model of good stewardship, the parish asks that your first gifts are back to God through our Sunday giving. This is our most important level of giving. Our second level is the annual appeals: to the archdiocesan Annual Catholic Appeal, our capital campaign Forward in Our Faith and the Annual School Fund. Next, our fundraisers, our community building events and our ministry specific events. No matter how you support the parish, be assured of our gratitude and our proper cultivating of your generous stewardship.

SPONSORSHIP: ADDRESSING DONOR FATIGUE Two years ago, in an effort to address the constant “ask” of our families, local businesses and corporate sponsors, the parish moved forward with a strategic plan asking these entities to partner with the parish.

The objective continues to invite our past and new donors for a onetime annual sponsorship gift rather than be asked for multiple donations throughout any given year. The annual sponsorship supports the many outreach ministries of our parish including education and human concerns. Sponsorship amounts are set at various levels and allow for the donor to determine a package that best fits their giving philosophy.

This past year, the parish raised $ 34,500 (Donations and In-Kind) in sponsorship that was allocated to the Gala, BenFest and the HSA FunRun. We are grateful to the following donors for their generous sponsorship this past year (see right).

Jesus instructs His twelve disciples, as well as all of us, “Whoever receives one child such as this in my name, receives me; and whoever receives me, receives not me but the One who sent me.” When I hear this Gospel, I think of the work we do in our parish school. For decades the parish elementary school and high school, have helped thousands of students in partnership with their parents to know of God’s love for them, and that He sent His only Son, Jesus, to bring us all salvation and eternal life. Our parish school is a blessing to so many and I am so grateful to be a part of it.

Now

For the past seven years, I have been very blessed to be a part of a very specific part of our school, our parish high school. Back in February 2017, we made the decision to phase out the high school grade levels of our parish school due to demographic trends informing us there is not enough demand for a small Catholic high school. I am grateful that our parish decided to phase out the high school over two years instead of just shutting it down. The parish community didn’t just send the high school students and families away, instead we call them our own and rally around them to ensure they, too, will be a St. Benedict graduate. To all of our parishioners, alumni and friends, thank you for supporting them in your prayers and with your generosity. If you only knew how so many lives have been positively impacted. Our community “received these children” in Jesus’s name – and I have faith that God will continue to bless our community in return.

This school year we will be graduating our 65th and final senior class. We are not going to phase out the high school quietly and sweep it under a rug. Rather, we have planned a year-long celebration of the gift of our parish high school. For 69 years, the high school has been bringing teenage children to know God’s love for them. Our parish has been serving these young people for almost seven decades, and that is something for which to be proud. From Msgr. Fasnacht, the founder of the high school, to the School Sisters of St. Francis who dedicated their lives to teaching young people to the current faculty and staff today, we celebrate all those who dedicated themselves to the educational and faith formation of our parish and neighborhood teens.

I’d also like to thank all those who gave so generously to the high school in terms of time, talent and treasure. There are several donors who lovingly gave tens of thousands of dollars to support the high school in its last two decades. Please know that your generosity made a difference in the lives of so many young men and women. I wish you could know all their stories – your hearts would be moved. Your generosity and legacy will continue to bear fruit; the parish educational endowment will continue to support our parish families who desire at St. Benedict education for their child.

Finally, we are pleased to share our year-long series of events (see next page) that celebrate the St. Benedict High School spirit and hope you feel moved to attend some or all of the events. We also ask our parishioners and alumni to share this information with other St. Benedict alumni who may no longer be a part of the parish, but who have St. Benedict forever as a part of their hearts: I look forward to celebrating this last precious year with all of you.
