**Edmund Cotterill (fl. 1822-1858) for Robert Garrard. Cotterill ran Garrard’s design studio from 1833 and helped establish their reputation for producing sculptural groups and centrepieces in bronze and silver. THE JUSTICES OF THE COUNTY OF DEVON a mid-late 19th century steel desk seal, navette-shaped, the matrix engraved intaglio with the seal of the justices* of the county of Devon, one side engraved “ALLAN WYON 287, REGENT STREET W.”**; contained in original leather case, lacking its handle; 1.4” (3.5cm) long *Justices, also known as Assizes, were judges who travelled across the seven circuits of England & Wales, commissioned to hold the King’s Courts, normally dealing with the most serious of crimes.

THE SEAL OF THE BRISTOL SUGAR REFINERY COMPANY a 19th century circular steel seal, the matrix engraved intaglio with a view of the Bristol Sugar Refinery* with buildings, barrels & a chimney, flanked by sugar canes, above the coat of arms of the company, and surrounded with the inscription “BRISTOL SUGAR REFINERY COMPANY LIMITED, 1863”, the side stamped “WYON REGENT STT LONDON”; 2.1” (5.5cm) diameter * The Bristol Sugar Refinery was formed in 1863. Due to the bankruptcy of the Old Market Refinery, this previous refinery was destroyed by a fire in 1854 and rebuilt at great costs which bankrupted one of the partners. One of the other partners (William Stock), sold it to a public company (The Bristol Sugar Refinery Co. Ltd), the new company ceased trading in 1912, but the building is still standing today and used for other purposes.

- CALLINGTON a late 19th/early 20th century brass desk seal, the oval matrix engraved intaglio “PLYMOUTH, DEVONPORT & S.W JUCTION RAILWAY” surrounding “CALLINGTON”, with a turned wooden handle; 4.1” (10.3cm) long

*The Plymouth, Devonport & South Western Junction Railway (PD&SWJR) was an English railway company, with a mainline between Lydford & Devonport, in Devon. This enabled the London & South Western railway to reach Plymouth much easier than before. The branch from Bere Alston to Callington (then known as Kelly Bray) was opened in 1908, sponsored by the above whom owned a line from Plymouth, through Tavistock which made the connection at Bere Alston. From Gunnislake to Callington, it followed the East Cornwall Minerals Railway which was promoted to run passed various mines, down to a quay on the Tamar near Calstock, which meant it had to deviate higher ground, so a wagon lift was constructed near the Tamar Viaduct.
In the 1960s the main line from Lydford closed, as did the Callington Line, a great shame for the railway community as the site offered great variety & ingenuity of the Southern Railway

THE SEAL OF JOHN FRANCIS BASSET (1831-1869)
a Victorian silver seal, the oval matrix engraved intaglio, with a coat of arms above the motto “PRO REGE ET POPULO”, surrounded by “JOHN FRANCIS BASSET ESQ SHERIFF OF CORNWALL.1861.”, lacking its handle, unmarked c.1861; 1.2” (3cm) long
*The Basset family were amongst the earliest Norman settlers in the UK. They have owned Tehidy Country Park on the west coast of Cornwall since Normandy times and obtained the manor in the 12th century. The building was dismantled in 1497 during the Cornish Rebellion in revenge for John Basset’s (then Sheriff of Cornwall) loyalty to the Crown, it remained until 1861 when John Francis Basset rebuilt with income from mining, the manor remained in the Basset family until 1915 ending 700 years of family ownership, it was used for a hospital in 1918, destroyed by a fire in 1919, rebuilt again by 1922 and now used as luxury apartments.
This seal was the personal seal of John Francis Bassett (1831-1869), while Sheriff of Cornwall and husband of Emily Henrietta Vereker, daughter of John Prendergast Vereker, 3rd Viscount Gort
