RACE VERDICT

It’s a choice between easy bumper winner Brickfield Belle, who had a fair educational run over hurdles last winter, and KIMI DE MAI, now having her tenth start in this discipline. The latter hasn’t done much wrong in her last two defeats and settled well last time when just outstayed over 2m4f. Back at this trip, she might be able to get the job done. Jury Time has shown up well in course bumpers and has a place shout. [Mark Nunan] Source: Racing Post

A-Z GUIDE TO RACING Are you a first time racegoer, then this section is just for you! By going through some of the racing terminology, discussing some tips to enjoy your day and what you need to bring and do once you get here, this section will ensure you get the most from your day at the races.

Amateur: (rider) on race cards, their names are prefixed by Mr, Mrs, Captain, etc., to indicate their amateur status. Apprentice: Young jockey tied by annually renewed contract to a licensed trainer while he or she is learning the business of race-riding. Best Turned Out: This is the prize given to the groom of the horse that is judged to look the best in the parade ring. Bit: A two-piece device that fits into the horse’s mouth and is attached to the reins. It allows the jockey to control and steer the horse. Blinkers: A piece of equipment that goes over the horse’s head to restrict its vision and help it concentrate in a race. Colt: Male, un-gelded horse up to four years old. Conditional Jockey: The jumping equivalent of an apprentice. A young National Hunt jockey that can claim a weight allowance of up to 10lbs. Dam: Mother of a horse. Distance: The length of a race: 5 furlongs is the minimum and the 4 1⁄2 miles of the Grand National the longest. Also, the margin by which a horse wins or is beaten by the horse in front: this ranges from a short head to ‘by a distance’ (more than 30 lengths); a ‘length’ is measured from the horse’s nose to the start of its tail. Draw: For flat racing only, describes a horse’s position in the starting stalls, drawn randomly the day before. Filly: female horse up to four years old. Foal: Horse of either sex from the time of its birth until 1 January the following year. Furlong: 220 yards (one eighth of a mile). Gelding: Castrated horse. Going: The description of conditions underfoot on the racecourse. Official Jockey Club going reports progress as follows: Heavy - soft - good to soft - good - good to firm - firm - hard. Green: (of a horse) inexperienced. Hand: Unit of four inches in which a horse’s height is measured, at the shoulder. Handicap: A race in which the weights are calculated by an official assessor (called a handicapper). The better class horses carry the highest weights while the lesser class horses carry lower weights. The idea is to give all horses an equal chance of winning. Judge: Official responsible for declaring the finishing order of a race and the distances between the runners. Maiden: Horse which has not won a race. Mare: Female horse five years and over. Off the Bit/Off the Bridle: Describes a horse being pushed along by his jockey, losing contact with the bit in his mouth. On the Bit/On the Bridle: Describes a horse going well within himself, still having a grip on the bit. Pace: ‘Up with the pace’ means close to the leaders; ‘off the pace’ means some way behind the leaders. Pattern: The elite races, divided in Flat racing into Groups One, Two, Three and Listed; and in Jumping into Grades One,Two and Three. Photo Finish: Electronic photographic device which determines minimal distances in a close finish. Scope: The potential for physical development in a horse. Sire: Father of a horse. Stewards: The panel of men and women - usually a total of four - who are responsible for seeing that the Rules of Racing are adhered to. Stewards Enquiry: Enquiry by the stewards into the running of a race. Weigh In/ Weigh Out: Weighing of jockey before and after a race to ensure that the correct weight has been carried; the announcement ‘weighed in’ signals that the result is official, and all bets can be settled. Yearling: Horse of either sex from 1 January to 31 December of the year following its birth.

RACE VERDICT

RACE 2 PREDICTOR The Predictor is a ‘Computer Generated’ predicted outcome of the race in visual form, generated by an algorithm of key factors (including eg current form, ratings and going.)

The locally-trained Approval has the racefitness and hurdling experience, and seems to be getting the hang of things in this discipline, with the hood now left off. Thinkitdontjinxit is a nice chasing prospect further down the line, but it mightn’t be soft enough for him. GLOBAL SUBMISSION has form on yielding, including in a decent Leopardstown bumper, and can defy a long absence. [Mark Nunan] Source: Racing Post

With just a little improvement from his handicap debut at Listowel, TELL ME SEE may have the measure of more exposed rivals. Likely dangers include Beckistine, who also shaped promisingly at Listowel, and recent Tramore winner Way Down South, who could still be well treated. [Alan Sweetman] Source: Racing Post

Back over a longer trip, and with his fitness sharpened by last month’s return, DUCE BIGALOW can resume the progress shown in the spring. RACE VERDICT

RACE 5 PREDICTOR The Predictor is a ‘Computer Generated’ predicted outcome of the race in visual form, generated by an algorithm of key factors (including eg current form, ratings and going.)

A good run on the Flat at Listowel should have ANYWAY to peak condition for this. He won well at Tramore in August, and there should be more to come. Bossofthebrownies can be rated a smart prospect for staying handicaps on last season’s novice form. Last year’s winner and second, French Dynamite and Weveallbeencaught could be in the mix again for Eric McNamara. [Alan Sweetman] Source: Racing Post

HORSE WELFARE

-A PRIORITY

At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary. A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority. RACE 6 PREDICTOR The Predictor is a ‘Computer Generated’ predicted outcome of the race in visual form, generated by an algorithm of key factors (including eg current form, ratings and going.)

The top-weight Zurich was consistent and progressive last term and has run well fresh, but giving 22lb to MINERS BRIDGE may just be beyond him. Sam Curling’s fragile 9yo has hit form lately and this could be another good spot for him as he bids to complete a hattrick. If He’s Gorgeous could recapture his Punchestown festival form, he’d be a danger to all while Harry Cobden’s mount Park That looks to be on a good mark but hasn’t yet proven himself over this far.
