WELCOME ALL
A very warm welcome to Day 1 of the 11th running of Irish Champions Festival. A huge thank you to everyone who has worked to bring this exciting weekend together, including our sponsors, owners, trainers, jockeys, stable staff and patrons. Today’s racing offers a nine-race card with four Group races. A special welcome the connections of today’s international runners, we wish them the very best of luck.
This weekend is supported by sponsors and partners who make it possible to have world class prize money on offer; including Bahrain Turf Club, Coolmore Stud, Irish EBF, KPMG, Ballylinch Stud, TonyBet, and WorldPool, supported through The Hong Kong Jockey Club.
Today’s feature race is the Group 1 Royal Bahrain Irish Champion Stakes, rated joint-sixth best race in the world last year and is one of the richest races in Europe. Notable winners of the Royal Bahrain Irish Champion Stakes include Auguste Rodin (2023) Magical (2019/2020), Roaring Lion (2018), Golden Horn (2015), and Sea The Stars (2009) to name a few. Eight runners go to post at 3.25pm, battling it out to add their name to the Hall of Fame, including last year’s winner Auguste Rodin, multiple Group-winning Japanese runner Shin Emperor and the very promising UK raider, Economics. We extend a warm welcome to His Highness Shaikh Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa, Chairman of the Bahrain Turf Club and we share our gratitude for his support of this prestigious race.
All eyes will also be on The Group 1 Coolmore America ‘Justify’ Matron Stakes which looks to be very competitive. The race is one of the world’s top ranked fillies and mares’ races and has ten runners set to compete at 2.50pm including Fallen Angel, Porta Fortuna and Jancis.
We hope you enjoy a host of musical entertainment today, with New Brass Kings, Jamie Duff in Hurricane’s Bar, and Kelly-Anne Byrne spinning tunes at the Champions Marquee in between racing. We turn up the gears after racing, warm up with a singalong to classic hits with Mimi Lane before dancing the night away to Complete Madness!
Thanks once again for joining us today, we hope you have an enjoyable day of racing. During your day, if there is anything we can do to help please don’t hesitate to get in touch with a member of the Leopardstown Team. There’s another world-class day of racing for Day Two of Irish Champions Festival at the Curragh Racecourse tomorrow, and we hope to see many of you there.
Tim Husbands MBE CEO Leopardstown Racecourse

This wonderful weekend of international racing shines a light on the best of what Ireland has to offer and whether you’ve travelled from near or far to be with us this afternoon, you are most welcome to Leopardstown for the opening day of Irish Champions Festival.
It is a weekend of racing that is second to none, here at Leopardstown, and at the Curragh tomorrow, we will see ten Group races in all, six at Group 1 level. Today’s Group 1 races are the much-anticipated Coolmore America ‘Justify’ Matron Stakes and the Royal Bahrain Irish Champion Stakes.
It is our pleasure to welcome His Highness Shaikh Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa and members of the Bahrain Turf Club. We wish His Highness well as he seeks to win the Royal Bahrain Irish Champion Stakes with his own horse, Economics.
We are delighted to be joined by His Excellency, Maruyama Norio, Ambassador of Japan to Ireland. Leopardstown’s great link with Japan and the Japan Racing Association is further strengthened as, for the second time, this great race features a Japanese contender in Shin Emperor and we extend our best wishes to his connections.
The international flavour of the meeting extends to our betting partners in the Hong Kong Jockey Club as the World Pool returns to Leopardstown. Our work with the HKJC, Tote and the Racecourse Media Group allows racing fans around the world to bet into a single pool with the opportunity for unequalled value for Tote customers across all nine races on today’s card.
Irish Champions Festival promises to be a wonderful occasion and I do hope that many of you will join us again at the Curragh tomorrow afternoon.
Suzanne Eade Chief Executive, Horse Racing Ireland

RACE VERDICT
The Predictor is a ‘Computer Generated’ predicted outcome of the race in visual form, generated by an algorithm of key factors (including eg current form, ratings and going.) SELECTION: BUBBLING
In front of Bubbling on debut and an impressive winner over C&D when last seen, CHANTEZ has the strongest form in the book and can give trainer Ger Lyons a third win in the race in four years. Joseph O’Brien’s Mojave River won a Deauville maiden on debut and could be anything, while Indigo Dream is well worth her place in the lineup and has place possibilities. Nancy J is another with a chance. [Adrian Wall] Source: Racing Post

RACE VERDICT
Green Impact will have plenty of form judges on his side as he got the better of DELACROIX in a C&D maiden, but Aidan O’Brien’s colt landed the odds in style at the Curragh last time and is held in very high regard. He can reserve the form. Jockey bookings would suggest Bernard Shaw has work to do to beat the likely favourite but must be respected after his 9l demolition at Dundalk. RACE VERDICT
Poker Face and Mountain Bear could be capable of getting involved, but this looks like it could be between two principals. The drop back to 1m after his runaway win in the Meld Stakes should hold no fears for Diego Velasquez. However, the proven Group 1 form shown over 1m by MALJOOM(nap) in the Queen Anne and Sussex Stakes will make him hard to beat. [Justin O’Hanlon] Source: Racing Post SELECTION: MALJOOM

(Group 1)
Race Preview: Winner of the Irish 1,000 Guineas and the Coronation Stakes, Tahiyra completed a memorable Group 1 hat-trick for owner-breeder the Aga Khan, trainer Dermot Weld and jockey Chris Hayes in capturing the 2023 Matron Stakes. Meeting older rivals for the first time, the half-sister to the brilliant Tarnawa was confidently ridden by Hayes who had her ideally positioned from two furlongs down but waited until inside the last furlong before pushing her out to beat the Duke Of Cambridge Stakes winner Rogue Millennium by a snug length and a quarter.
Key Statistics:
Only one of the last ten winners was trained outside Ireland.
Three-year-olds have won eight of last ten runnings - the last winning four-yearold was La Collina in 2014.
Only one winner was drawn lower than four.

RACE VERDICT
Willie McCreery had his best day as a trainer when Fiesolana won this race in 2014 and JANCIS might prove to be every bit as good as she was. The list of dangers include Porta Fortuna who is already a three-time Group 1 winner and looked right at her best when landing the Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket last time, and Fallen Angel who comes here off the back of a devastating win in the Irish 1,000 Guineas. Rogue Millennium could be of serious interest for the place money, while Ylang Ylang clearly has lots of ability but needs to find improvement from somewhere. [Adrian Wall] Source: Racing Post

Horse Care on Raceday
The wellbeing of horses is integral to the thoroughbred racehorse industry. Racecourses play their part through adherence to a clear set of industry standards. Prior to each race meeting an independent track inspection is carried out by an IHRB accredited “Clerk of the Course”. This individual will check all equine facilities, including ground conditions, railing, stables and veterinary care facilities. All racecourses must meet the required standards to be granted a licence to race.
At every race meeting a team of equine veterinary surgeons supervise the wellbeing of horses. All racecourse vets must be members of the Association of Irish Racecourse Veterinary Surgeons (AIRVS) and will have received specialist training in the field of racecourse work.
The IHRB Veterinary Officer at each meeting has responsibilities including:
• Horse Identification - achieved through checking their microchip numbers against those recorded in their passports.
• Drug Testing - a process is vital to ensure the integrity of the sport.
• General oversight of horse care and wellbeing.
• Provision of advice to the Stewards, on veterinary matters.
A racecourse vet will check horses at the start for each race. If they deem any horse unfit to race at this point, they have the authority to withdraw the horse. During the race the vets follow on, within the convoy of vehicles seen on the service road. Other vehicles in this convoy include doctors, paramedics and ground-staff. This whole team will swing into action if any incident occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse or jockey receiving treatment. This allows the veterinary or medical teams some privacy to fully assess the casualty. Racegoers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured participant.
The Blue Cross Horse Ambulance are also present every meeting, the service is operated by skilled personnel using specially equipped horse ambulances. They work to support the Veterinary Team. They respond swiftly to any incidents involving injured horses and transport them off the racetrack for specialist veterinary care if required.
The presentation of the horses on race day reflects the preparation at home. The results of good feeding, good housing, good health, and good wellbeing are clear to see when a horse appears at the races bright-eyed with a gleaming coat and a spring in their step. Raceday is great opportunity for the public to observe the high standards of care given to these horses.
All horses are accompanied on raceday by their own dedicated stable staff. These skilled people will have spent many months and sometimes years preparing their horses for the raceday. They lavish care and attention, day in, day out, in all weathers, and the industry is extremely proud of these excellent individuals. They help maintain Ireland’s position as an international leader in the thoroughbred breeding, training, and racing industry, ensuring best-in-class integrity and equine welfare standards.

Facts & Statistics
The Royal Bahrain Irish Champion Stakes (Group 1)
Race Preview: Aidan O’Brien saddles the two most recent winners of the Royal Bahrain Irish Champion Stakes, Luxembourg and Auguste Rodin, among a four-runner challenge that comprises the entire home defence for a race won by the stable five years in a row and 12 times in all. Having had an erratic campaign, Auguste Rodin looks vulnerable. His three-year-old stablemate Los Angeles, winner of the Irish Derby and Great Voltigeur at York, may prove the main threat to the William Haggas-trained Dante Stakes winner Economics who appeals as a prime candidate for Group 1 honours following a smart performance in a Deauville Group 2. The Japanese-trained Shin Emperor provides an international dimension but faces a tough task.
Key Statistics:
Three-year-olds have won seven of the last ten renewals. The last ten winners were all previous Group 1 winners.
Last Year’s Winner → Group 1 Race:
It was a case of all-or-nothing for Auguste Rodin during a six-race campaign at three. The Deep Impact colt made up for an abject 2,000 Guineas performance by completing a splendid Derby double at Epsom and the Curragh only to misfire completely in the King George. Thus, he arrived at Leopardstown needing to prove himself all over again. He rose to the occasion. Ryan Moore rode a tactically astute race, tracking year-older stablemate Luxembourg from two furlongs down before edging ahead at the furlong pole. Inclined to be a touch lazy in front, he was always holding the 2022 winner.

An intriguing race. Los Angeles is fascinating dropping back in trip and should not be underestimated, while the presence of Japanese horse Shin Emperor adds another layer to this contest. Potential is the keyword with likely favourite Economics, but this is by far his stiffest examination to date. Trustyourinstinct has some rock solid form in the book and looks set to be right in the mix, while Muster Oaks winner Sumiha impressed at Cork and has a progressive profile. The narrow vote goes to likely outsider CHANTILLY, who was only beaten 4l at Royal Ascot and the race could be set up nicely for him if stablemate Euphoric employs his usual front-running tactics. William Haggas sends recent French Group 3 winner Klondike across and he also commands respect. [Adrian Wall] Source: Racing Post

RACE VERDICT
As wide open as could be expected. Willie Mullins is mob-handed here and perhaps Colin Keane’s mount Plontier might be the best of them after impressing on his stable debut in a Sligo maiden hurdle. Of the Ballydoyle contingent, Ryan Moore’s mount Chemistry probably has more to offer after he was fortunate to get a Listed race here last month in the Stewards room. Top-weight Eagle’s Way and dual recent winner Ameerat Jumaira are among plenty with decent chances. Preference is for COMFORT ZONE, second in this last year and comes here on the back of a fine run in a handicap hurdle at Galway. [Justin O’Hanlon] Source: Racing Post SELECTION: COMFORT ZONE

RACE VERDICT
British raider Cerulean Bay is respected bidding for a four-timer, while I Am Superman and Rahmi are two others with solid form in good company. However, a more speculative option to consider is RAKNAH, who really impressed when beating supposedly superior rivals from the front in Listed company at Galway and ran a big race in a valuable York handicap from a tough mark. She needs to bounce back from a disappointing run at Tipperary but Tom Marquand is an eyecatching booking. [Adrian Wall] Source: Racing Post

RACE VERDICT
Another very competitive contest to end the day. Independent Expert would go close if reproducing her Cambridgeshire third. Lady Lunette and Snellen are closely handicapped and both can get involved. The progressive Serialise can get involved, while the hat-trick seeking Evening Blossom comes into the same category. The one to beat is QUADRUPLE, a fast-improving filly who impressed at the Curragh last time and could well be stakes class. [Justin O’Hanlon] Source: Racing Post
SELECTION: QUADRUPLE Next Best: Snellen
