RACE VERDICT
Not beaten far in a Punchestown Grade 3 bumper last time, FEMME MAGNIFIQUE can continue that improvement into a hurdling career and take this on debut. Sharp Object was 4.5l behind the selection on that day and can run well. Long Gone, Slim Marvel and Disco Dancer are others who should go well. [Tyrone Molloy] Source: Racing Post

RACE VERDICT
Cullenwaine has to be of interest after his narrow defeat last time but it may be worth taking a flyer with STRADBALLY VILLAGE who showed a bit more last time and may build on that run. Tickalong won here on last year’s seasonal reappearance and warrants respect again this time. Source: Racing Post

RACE VERDICT
This looks like the stronger of the two divisions with the tentative vote going to SPRINGBOARD who showed more on handicap debut last time and he may be able to build on that stepping up in trip. O’Faolains Boy looks well treated from his lower hurdle mark and Aliunde wasn’t beaten far here last time. [Phill Anderson]

A few in with a shout including Benny Silver who has been in good form in Britain in recent times and Itsalonglongroad took a step back in the right direction last time. However, recent hurdle winner, GAME AND GLORY, gets the vote with a lower chase mark to work with and she’s unexposed in this sphere. Caughoo
As a two-year-old colt, Caughoo was sent to the Ballsbridge Sales in Dublin where he was bought by Herbert McDonnell from Malahide for only 50 guineas in 1941. He was later sold to Herbert’s brother, Dublin jeweller Jack McDowell. They named him Caughoo after their father’s estate in Co Cavan.
Jack McDowell played rugby at nearby Suttonians and adopted their club colours as his racing colours, royal blue, green and white. His early racing career dwindled in terms of success when racing on the flat and he was never placed, however Caughoo was then schooled over fences and his luck began to change.
Caughoo’s association with Downpatrick Racecourse began in 1945 when he won the Ulster Grand National under Eddie Dempsey. Not satisfied with having one Ulster Grand National win under his belt, Caughoo continued his winning streak at Downpatrick by winning the Ulster Grand National again in 1946.
In 1947 the snow lay on the ground for months and many a race meeting was cancelled. Caughoo had been lucky as he had the opportunity to work on the beach between Portmarnock and Malahide in Co. Dublin which some English trainers complained had given him an edge throughout the tough weather. The beaches became a second home to him as he rolled about and raced through the water, watched by his ‘lad’ Ted Wright. At Aintree he wasn’t well backed, going to post as a 100-1 outside, 250-1 on the Tote. However, thanks to a dream the night before, one lucky Clare farmer backed him and as a result collected the princely sum of 3,000 pounds afterwards. He then sent one third of those winnings to the Pope to aid starving children as he had a guilty conscience because he ‘knew’ from his dream that Caughoo would win. The trip around Aintree was also a new experience for his jockey Eddie Dempsey as he had never been in England before. The Grand National was his first win in three years and he had previously been headman to Tom Dreaper for three years in the early 1940s.
“Caughoo’s jockey, E. Dempsey, deserves full credit. Dempsey who had several winners in point-to-point races before taking out a professional rider’s licence, had not ridden a winner for three years prior to Saturday’s triumph.”
We are lucky here in Downpatrick to have first-hand accounts and memorabilia of Caughoo’s talent and time here at Downpatrick and also at the Grand National. This evening has celebrated horses from a the bygone era, the more recent past and what’s in store for the future so it is with great pride that we display some of Caughoo’s belongings that helped put him on the map - as well as Downpatrick. As the Bloodstock Breeders’ Review in 1947 also attested to:
“His place in the Hall of Fame is at any rate secure, and he may be remembered as an honest-to-goodness little horse, a great jumper and stayer, and as game as a pebble.”

SELECTION: OCEAN LEGACY
RACE VERDICT
This can go the way of CENTURION STEEL who took a major step back in the right direction last time and he’s well treated if he can build on that. Welsh Saint’s recent Cartmel run is worth forgiving and Ocean Legacy may be involved in the finish with a clear round this time. Last time out winner Greenway Machine has won over this course and distance and he could be the main danger, despite his advancing years. [Phill Anderson] Source: Racing Post
SELECTION: CENTURION STEEL Next Best: Ocean Legacy
RACE RESULT
Shane Fitzgerald (Centurion Steel, Downpatrick 4:35) has ridden 5 winners from 16 rides in the past 14 days. That’s a 31% strike-rate. Source: Racing Post

RACE VERDICT
Having run a fine race to be runner-up to a useful rival in a Punchestown maiden hurdle on debut, STARCROSSED LOVER should take this if as effective reverting to a bumper. Eoin’s Charm is also reverting to a bumper, having run well in two Ballinrobe maiden hurdles and has a shout. Lady Gooner and Jackson Lamb need to find improvement on their bumper runs. SELECTION: STARCROSSED LOVER Next Best: Lady Gooner
Mr P W Mullins (Lady Gooner, Downpatrick 5:10) has ridden 3 winners from 4 rides in the past 14 days. That’s a 75% strike-rate. Source: Racing Post

At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are placed around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary. A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority.
