UNIVERSITY HOTELS + CONFERENCE CENTERS

C e l e b r a t i n g o v e r 4 5 Ye a r s o f Hospitalit y through Design In 1975, Joe Rabun founded what would become a leading architectural force in the development world. Now, over 45 years later, Rabun Architects has amassed a portfolio of numerous successful hotel, conference, and institutional projects.

Throughout our history, hospitality has been the focus of our firm. We define “hospitality” not as an industry segment, but as a way of doing business. In service to our clients, our design team, and our employees, Rabun Architects offers a welcoming environment in which the highest quality design can be produced. The result: over 120 successful projects, a multitude of repeat-clients, and a highly experienced staff ready to take on the next challenge.

We understand the needs of the development world. Our team of architects and designers are adept at providing practical solutions in a tight timeframe. Leveraging the power of BIM and virtual reality, we are able to give clients a realistic view of their project early on in the design process and ensure quality of design is carried all the way to the final product. From intimate renovations to complex mixed-use developments, we provide every client with quality design, rooted in the practical, working knowledge of hotel, conference, and institutional spaces.

We a r e R a b u n A r c h i t e c t s , and we are proud to ser ve hospitalit y through design.

OUR PERSPECTIVE We are driven to succeed. We have developed a process to create a buildable layout in a minimal timeframe. From site plan to sellable renderings, Rabun maintains the momentum to keep projects moving forward.

We embrace emerging technology. For the past decade, we have fully integrated 3D BIM technology into all of our work. This allows us to provide clients with a live view of their project from conception through construction.

We are grounded in experience. Our biggest assts are our people and the experience they bring with them. With every project, Rabun brings a dedicated team, grounded in their experience in hospitality and residential design.

We deliver successful projects. We believe a successful project is one that operates well. With even the most challenging of sites, Rabun is able to deliver a layout that performs at an optimal level and is aesthetically pleasing.

PORTFOLIO

Rabun Architects has amassed a catalog of over 120 successful hospitality, conference, and institutional commissions. Our expertise in hospitality design influences all that we do, leaving clients, guests, and residents alike with a welcome feeling that permeates every project.

Duke University J.B. Duke Inn + R.D.T.C. Conference Center Durham, North Carolina Duke University commissioned Rabun to design a major addition to the R. David Thomas Center at the Fuqua School of Business. This IACC certified conference center received a fresh look and dramatically increased capacity. The connecting corridor and walk connecting the two halves of the conference center was demolished and a five story addition with two partial lower floors was built in its place. This addition dramatically increased the building’s visibility from various points along Science Drive, and, by virtue of its prominent central location, effectively created a completely new image for the front and back of the conference center. A guest’s first impression of the conference center is improved, as the addition also provides an entirely new front door, reception, and lobby. Other key spaces created by the addition include 85 new guest rooms, 11,350 sf of additional meeting space, a business center, and two food and beverage facilities.

Duke University Washington Duke Inn

Durham, NC The Washington Duke Inn functions as the living room of Duke University, a social gathering point for friends, faculty, and alumni. The renovations and additions maintained the architectural integrity of the original design (also created by Rabun Architects). The additions include a low rise wing of conference space, a new 7,600 square foot ballroom, and appropriate support and back-of-house facilities. The guestroom additions include 101 guestrooms in two new five story wings.

Emory University Hotel + Conference Center Atlanta, Georgia The Emory Conference Center Hotel offers state of the art meeting facilities that support the University’s conferencing and continuing education needs. The Conference Center was designed to blend harmoniously with the virgin woodlands that surround the site. Public amenities were strategically organized to capture the natural beauty of the surroundings, providing a beautiful and relaxing experience for visitors. The Emory Conference Center Hotel is an IACC Member property. Rabun Architects has recently been commissioned for additional renovation and addition work to be completed in 2022.

LEED Silver Certification

University of Florida Hotel + Conference Center Gainesville, Florida Located on campus of the University of Florida at Gainesville, this state-of-the-art 19,476 square foot conference facility integrates 248 guestrooms within a 7-story tower. Amenities include garden courtyards, an outdoor pool, a restaurant, a cocktail lounge, meeting space, and a business center. The overall structural design concept was derived from the Murphee area quadrangle dormitories located in the older section of the campus.

Florida International University Hotel + Alumni Center Miami, Florida Rabun Architects is currently engaged on the development of a new, 175 key conference hotel and alumni center for Florida International University. The complex will feature over 25,000 SF of conference space, as well as housing all Alumni Center staff in a new, 20,000 SF state-of-theart facility. Special emphasis was placed on the planning of the design, to allow for large interior and exterior gathering spaces for alumni and university events. Working directly with the University, Rabun Architects has been able to provide a design which allows for growth and flexibility in future university development.

Tuskegee University Kellogg Conference Center Tuskegee, Alabama Formerly known as the historic Dorothy Heights, this renovation and expansion is home to a hotel, conference center, and restaurant. The Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center’s hotel is a four story Georgian-style mansion with 108 guestrooms. The event space includes a 350-guest ballroom, 300seat auditorium, and multimedia meeting rooms, covering a total of 13,064 square feet. The Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center is one of twelve worldwide, and the only center at a historically black university.

OTHER UNIVERSITY WORK

University of Georgia The Classic Center Athens, Georgia The Classic Center is a cultural and convention facility located in downtown Athens, Georgia consisting of a 2,100 seat performing arts hall, 18,000 square feet of banquet and meeting space, and a 30,000 square foot exhibition hall. The entire complex has been sensitively organized around the Historic Firehall #1, which has been preserved and renovated into the premier meeting space of the facility. The elegant façade of the Classic Center was carefully designed to be compatible with many of the historic and older structures of downtown Athens. The Performing Arts hall has been set back from the street in line with the Firehall so that the scale of the new building would not overwhelm the Firehall. The meeting and exhibition spaces are scaled appropriately and positioned adjacent to the street in a fashion that is compatible with the urban context.

Emory University Mason Guest House Atlanta, Georgia The Mason House is a private retreat that offers low cost housing for organ transplant candidates at Emory Hospital, recipients, living donors, and families. Guests who book one of the 15 bedrooms, each with a private bath, will find a comfortable bed-and-breakfast environment. In addition, a two bedroom suite is available with its own kitchen, living area and private entrance. Several bedrooms and bathrooms are wheelchair accessible.

Emory University M.B. Seretean Center for Health Promotion Atlanta, Georgia The Emory Clinic at 1525 Clifton Road was constructed in the mid-1990’s as a one-stop shopping healthcare facility with the ability to perform treadmill tests, pulmonary function tests, mammograms, and electrocardiograms on site. The five-story, 80,000 sf building was designed in collaboration with Sizemore Floyd Architects. Rabun Architects designed the building exterior with an elegant two-story prairie-style entrance. In addition, Rabun provided hotel lobby styled waiting rooms and other features to give the project a hospitality atmosphere in lieu of the traditional hospital environment. The center has expansive offices for 25 primary-care physicians, including internists, family practitioners, pediatricians, and gynecologists. Each doctor is provided with three examination rooms, and each nurse has his or her own procedure room. The building allows efficiencies for both doctors and patients with an on-site laboratory, pharmacy, and radiology facilities. The Blomeyer Health Fitness Center, conveniently located on the fifth floor, offers fully equipped strength training, cardio, and group fitness areas solely for faculty and staff of Emory University and Emory Healthcare.

Georgia Tech Phi Sigma Kappa Fraternity House

Atlanta, Georgia The design and details of the Phi Sigma Kappa Fraternity House utilizes the hospitality and institutional experience, and provides a facility that is functional, durable, and displays a traditional “Greek” style. The house has a prime location in the heart of the Greek Sector on campus and has 11,916 square feet of living space. The first floor has a spacious dining area, study room, library space, residential kitchen, parlor area, bedrooms, and bathrooms. The second level also has bedrooms and bathrooms. There is a front porch and a back patio area with a parking area. Other rooms include a chapter room, President’s Suite, and Achievement and Accolades Suite.
