Suzanne Dreitlein has called Queen Village home for 16 years and is passionate about historic row houses, antiques, and creepy things. A long time web manager, and also an Outreach Director for the Project Management Institute Delaware Valley Chapter, Suzanne also has several hobbies so if you happen to see someone walking around the neighborhood in 18th Century garb, there’s a very good chance it’s her.

Shelby Fisk is a writer and a mom who has lived in Queen Village since 2016. She loves listening to music in our parks and dining at neighborhood restaurants. Shelby holds an MA & MFA in Creative Writing.

Gabe Halperin-Goldstein, a Queen Village resident since Summer 2022, can be found playing tennis at Weccacoe Playground and eating at New Wave Cafe in his free time. Gabe works as a social worker for Jewish Family and Children’s Services and as a freelance writer on the side.

But she now focuses on researching and writing historically oriented features for neighborhood publications like News of Academy House and Center City Quarterly.

Maureen Brady Weir has been a Queen Village neighbor since 2000 and a member of The Friends of Moyamensing Point since 2008. A communications director by trade, she is also a certified Pennsylvania Master Naturalist.

A Year in Review

appy holidays!

No matter what you celebrate, I hope you have a wonderfully festive kickoff to the winter season.

Reflecting on my first year as president, I cannot thank you enough: the dozens and dozens of passionate volunteers who selflessly give their time to clean up our parks, mentor our youth, write for the Crier, and more! Our incredible bookkeeper and my right-hand man, Jake, and the entire board who steps up whenever and however necessary. It’s because of you that life in the Village continues to get better.

Over this past year, thanks to everyone’s collective efforts, we have:

• Given out more than $25,000 in microgrants to neighbors and groups • Championed two city ordinances to ensure residents have a voice in development projects in our neighborhood • Conducted multiple park cleanups, including two of Bainbridge Green in partnership with the South Street MiniStation • Helped bring back the Officer of the Month awards to thank our police officers • Partnered with South Street Headhouse District to match entrepreneurial Villagers with available commercial spaces • Rolled out a successful safety initiative to improve lighting throughout the

Ramiz Turkish Grill A New Place of Warmth and Welcome on South Street

T

he Turkish city of Eskişehir was founded by the Phrygians in 1,000 BCE. Its modern name is derived from the words eski (old) and şehir (city). Since ancient times, it has been renowned for its history, beauty, and natural resources, including meerschaum: a white, foamy stone that has been carved into decorative objects for centuries.

The Kucuk family emigrated from Eskişehir to the United States in the early 1970s. Sal Kucuk, our host for this evening, is the fifth of seven brothers, all of whom embody the hard-working spirit of their parents and grandparents.

“My father was successful without formal education,” Sal says. “He told me, ‘Always believe in yourself and always save something for a rainy day.’” That advice has served Sal well in a career that began at 10 years old washing dishes and has weathered many storms, including COVID. “I love welcoming, meeting, and taking care of people,” he explains.

merly occupied by His & Hers Restaurant and Lounge for Ramiz, the #1 Turkish restaurant group in Europe, with Queen Village being their first American location. “We want to share the flavors of our hometown cooking,” he says, and let us tell you, those flavors are amazing!

Sal first bestowed upon us the mixed appetizer plate of hummus, baba ghanoush, labneh, and spicy vegetable dip with pita slices. The distinctive blend of spices mesmerized us as we enjoyed a Turkish music serenade. Next, treat yourself to the cheese rolls! These warm, savory comforts have a delicate outside crunch and a rich interior of melted feta and parsley. You’ll be dipping with abandon instead of wisely pacing yourself!

Next, we dove into the Aegean Sea with shrimp in a creamy red sauce and

with stunningly fresh calamari. But take a breath, maybe two, because the bounty of the grill is arriving. The meat of the Adana kabobs is spiced so perfectly.

Three styles of grilled meatballs? Yes, please! And the gyro meat is so sumptuous, so pure and delicate. It melts in your mouth as you savor familiar, yet unique, flavors.

Finally, good neighbors, do muster the strength for Turkish tea and an array of desserts unique to the region. The kϋnefe is hot off the stove with shredded dough, pistachios, honey, and cheese.

The kazandibi, or “bottom of the pan” custard, is reminiscent of s’more flavors in a strangely addictive presentation.

Sal is openly, and humbly, reaching out to the residents of Queen Village to come to South Street and accept his invitation for an evening of great experiences and new friendships. You will be grateful that you accepted! ■

Welcome, to QVNA’s Newest Board Members

Q

VNA’s annual Board elections were held at the Association’s November community meeting (November 2) and welcomed the return of two officers along with five new board members.

Secretary, Matt Atkins, and Treasurer, Phil Holzhauer, were both reelected to a second term and the board welcomed five new directors: Andrew Jarrah, Patricia Kucker, Amanda Mazie, Micah Shapiro, and Rich Villa. (Due to a recently-vacated seat, there were five director slots up for reelection.) These terms begin on January 1, 2024 and run through December 31, 2025.

Thank you to our newest board members for their interest in serving the Village and to everyone who voted. You can learn more about your recently elected neighborhood volunteers below.

Secretary Matthew Atkins. Since moving here with my fiancée, I have developed a passion for public safety, transportation, and community engagement. My service also extends to the Grants Committee, as well as representing QVNA on the Crosstown Coalition. Through these roles, I have gained valuable insights into our neighborhood’s unique challenges

which I intend to use to continue making the Village the best it can be. I look forward to further serving our community.

Treasurer Philip Holzhauer. My passion for this neighborhood stems from its rich history and charming character. With over eight years of experience as a certified professional accountant (CPA), specializing in nonprofit organizations, I look forward to continuing my service on the board and to making a positive impact on the community.

Directors Andrew Jarrah. In early 2023, my partner, Rachel, and I relocated from the Graduate Hospital to Queen Village, and we could not feel more at home. A New York explant, I originally came to Philly in 2019 to begin residency training at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Now a cardiology fellow, I am also passionate about neighborhood beautification, safety, and bolstering local businesses. I hope to help this amazing team leverage

public, private and municipal resources to continue to strengthen the Village’s appeal to the city at large, while preserving its history and character.

Patricia Kucker. I am a design educator and currently work for Drexel University managing a PhD program. I lived in Philadelphia in the 1980s and returned to the city to serve as provost at the University of the Arts. In 2018, we moved to the Village and are surrounded by friendly neighbors. I look forward to working together to support our vibrant and diverse community.

Amanda Mazie. Philadelphia has been my home for over 11 years, Queen Village for the past six. I am a real estate developer by profession and build residential apartments, as well as commercial and life science spaces.

I went to grad school at Penn, and I knew then that I would end up in this city forever. When not at work, I am often exploring Philly on my bike. I am on a mission to amp up our city’s biking scene, pushing for more bike lanes and safer cycling options for all of us.

QVNA SPOTLIGHT Micah Shapiro. Born and raised in the Philadelphia area and a resident of Queen Village for over ten years, My wife, two sons, and I live by Shot Tower Playground. I was a landscape architect for over 15 years with a focus on stormwater management, so I am particularly interested in our neighborhood’s green spaces. I am also interested in traffic calming near the spaces where our children play. I feel it is the obligation of the residents to play a part in the neighborhood that supports the public spaces and events that everyone enjoys.

Rich Villa has been a resident of Queen Village for over 17 years. Originally from Lakewood, NJ, he attended the New Jersey Institute of Technology and the University of Pennsylvania. After a few years in Society Hill, Rich and his wife settled into a 1790s rowhouse and have been slowly renovating it ever since. He is a partner at the local architecture firm Ambit Architecture and has completed designs for numerous neighborhood buildings, such as Bridget Foy’s, Mustard Greens, Bloomsday Café, the Flatiron Building at 5th Street & Passyunk Avenue, and the new Jim’s Steaks.

Growing Community, a Grant at a Time

C

ongratulations to the fall grant cycle awardees! Twice a year, QVNA provides microgrants to individuals or groups who seek to better life for Villagers. The Grant Committee, composed of board members and neighbors, reviews proposals then selects projects based on impact, relevance, and available funds.

Their recommendations then go to the QVNA board for consideration and approval. Five groups were selected for funding and will receive a combined $15,045.

Friends of Jefferson Square Park Friends of Jefferson Square Park received a grant to fund one day of essential tree maintenance and preventive care at Jefferson Square by Liberty Tree and Landscape Management. The grant will finance a professional arborist’s work to promote the health and longevity of the park’s trees, prevent damage, and enhance safety, following considerable tree loss in 2020 due to overdue care. The supportive services will include structural pruning, hazardous branch removal, and on-site use of the resulting organic debris as park mulch.

Friends of Mario Lanza Dog Park Friends of Mario Lanza Dog Park, an organization advocating for dog owners in the Village, received a grant to fund their annual resurfacing of the local dog park.

This maintenance involves leveling and adding pea gravel to the run to preserve the space and enhance the neighborhood’s quality of life. This project allows the organization to focus on a larger fu-

ture goal: accumulating sufficient funds to install turf in the dog run.

The Friends of Moyamensing Point The Friends of Moyamensing Point received a grant to hire a professional landscaper to conduct crucial upkeep, including soil testing and fertilization, for an effective greening strategy, and specialized tree and shrub care covering several species present on-site. This encompassing care is necessary due to specific issues like root girdling, dead limb removal, wire clearance, and branch spacing, all of which exceed the capabilities of the volunteer group.

Courtyard Mentor Network The Courtyard Mentor Network (CMN) is a mentoring initiative for young men ages 12–15 in Queen Village’s Courtyard apartment complex. This grant will allow the CMN to send a co-ed group of youth to the annual KB POWER Mentoring and Glamp camps in the summer of 2024.

The Friends of Mario Lanza Park The Friends of Mario Lanza, a nonprofit dedicated to maintaining and enhancing a historic public park spanning the 200 block of Catharine to Queen Street, received a grant to facilitate four main projects: second-stage refurbishment and painting of garden fencing, repairs to damaged fence sections, improved park lighting, and replacement of six damaged park benches, with additional sanding and staining for existing patio seating and picnic tables. ■

Landlord Tenant Matchmaking Initiative A Success Story MVMNT Center, 609 E. Passyunk Street

Q

ueen Village residents, Jeffrey Wild and Lauren Krohn, had been seeking a home for their wellness studio, MVMNT Center, for two years before coming across the Landlord-Tenant Matchmaking initiative.

Working full-time jobs, Jeffrey and Lauren did not have the time to conduct a thorough search for rental spaces on their own. They resorted to calling signs in open windows and storefronts that they happened to pass on the street.

“It is hard when you are looking for space on the side,” says Jeffrey. “You can’t focus time and attention on it.”

Their fortunes changed when Jeffrey came across an article in The Queen Village Quarterly Crier (Spring 2023) about the Landlord-Tenant Matchmaking initiative. The initiative, run by the South Street Headhouse District, connects landlords with commercial tenants looking for a place to host their business.

National statistics show that cities the size of Philadelphia usually have vacancy rates between 18 and 20%. Due in part to the Landlord-Tenant Matchmaking initiative, the South Street district hovers in the 11-13% vacancy range, far below the national average.

“It’s all about relationships,” says Dana Feinberg, Programming and Relationship Manager at South Street Headhouse District, about the initiative. “We look at the entire district, understanding what makes each individual property so unique. And we look at the needs of the business.”

All that Jeffrey and Lauren had to do was discuss their budget, timeline, and how much space their business would require. From there, the South Street Headhouse District introduced them to landlords that were possible fits. Jeffrey and Lauren first contacted

the South Street Headhouse District in May 2023. By August, they had signed a lease.

What made the initiative so successful? For starters, it allowed Jeffrey and Lauren to contact landlords through a trusted source. While conducting the search on their own, they found many landlords did not answer their inquiries.

Landlords were more likely to respond to the South Street Headhouse District, with whom they already had relationships.

“Having everything synthesized and sent from a trusted source is really what

allowed the conversations to happen the right way,” says Jeffrey.

Second, and perhaps most importantly, the initiative helped Jeffrey and Lauren to make connections with several landlords at once. This gave them leverage during negotiations.

“It allowed us to have multiple conversations at the same time, which helped our ability to negotiate and understand the different options,” says Jeffrey.

In the end, their leverage allowed Jeffrey and Lauren to attain lower rates on the monthly rent and better terms in their lease. So, what kinds of other businesses might benefit from the Landlord-Tenant Matchmaking initiative?

“It is not as much about the business itself, but more about the business owner,” says Jeffrey.

First-time business owners and people moving from the corporate to entrepreneurial world stand to benefit most. These prospective tenants may not have the personal relationships, time, or resources that are necessary for a thorough search.

Furthermore, businesses that are clearest about their concept tend to be most successful. This allows the matchmaker to identify real estate that meets specific needs of the business, such as large windows or space for bar seating.

As for MVMNT Center, the business has a suitable location and is ready to launch.

The grand opening of the building, located at 609 East Passyunk, is set for December 15. Furthermore, from November 28 through December 14, MVMNT Center will offer free programming to the community.

MVMNT Center is a boutique fitness and wellness studio. The fitness programs, or MVMNT classes, include reformer pilates, map pilates, and functional strength training. The wellness studio includes infrared sauna, cold plunge tubs, and Vitamin C showers.

The Bethel Burial Ground Memorial is Moving Forward

A

plan for creating the Historic Bethel Burying Ground (BBG) Memorial will soon be making its way out of the planning and preparation phase to a project in motion. On November 4, Kelly Lee of the Office of Art, Culture and the Creative Economy (OACCE), Marguerite Anglin from the Planning Commission, and members of the BBG Memorial Advisory Committee celebrated the start of the project alongside supporters.

At a meeting of the advisory committee on September 8, special guests included Doug Moony, the archaeologist advising the integrity of the burial ground during the project in the southwest quadrant of the playground, and Karen Oliver, the artist and designer of the Memorial. The meeting was an opportunity to hear updates and a timeline for the project.

Like everything since the pandemic, project costs have increased and thus require additional funding, along with some cost-saving measures. While the OACCE does not anticipate any problems with obtaining additional funds, there will need to be some savings built into our plan.

First, instead of being taken apart by hand, the building on the southside of the playground will be dismantled using light machinery. The building sits atop a portion of the burial ground. Archeolo-

gist Doug Moony will be overseeing this sensitive portion of the project closely.

(The light equipment that’s being proposed is exactly the same equipment that had been used in the excavation work that has been done thus far.) Secondly, some cost savings will come from tweaks to the overall plan. We were not made privy to what the specific changes to the plan would be except that they are being described as providing a “warmer” playground with more plantings and green spaces.

During planning for playground improvements at Weccacoe in 2013, the City and public learned that the first indepen-

dent cemetery for the interment of the African American community in Philadelphia possibly existed at Weccacoe and was unmarked. The Bethel Burying Ground was purchased in 1810 by Bishop Richard Allen and the Trustees of Mother Bethel A.M.E. Church. Later sold to the City of Philadelphia in 1889, the remains of over 5,000 African American women, men, and children were left under what is now Weccacoe Playground.

A passion project from husband and wife duo Edward Garcia and Jeannie Wong, the doors to Queen and Rook first opened on 2nd Street in fall 2019 with around 1,000 games in their library. Since then, this game cafe has expanded exponentially, thanks in part to their youth programming, which includes after-

school programs and summer camps. In fact, this game cafe has seen so much success, they are slated to open a much larger cafe in the old Pietro’s space at 123 South Street before the end of the calendar year.

“We want to do a lot more teen programming in the new space,” said Kat Stahl, Youth Programs Manager for Queen and Rook. “There are so few spaces for teens to hang out, and we’re building in lots of choice and openness for them in our new location.”

While construction has been ongoing throughout the year, the new Queen and Rook location will feature three floors for people to explore: the basement will house an old school arcade, the main floor will be similar to the current space with tables for games as well as food and drinks, and the top floor will be an open space for the after-school programs, camps, and private events (like birthday parties).

“It’s so cool to get to be a part of the lives of so many kids and their families in this community,” said Kat. “Gaming is such a great way to reach kids–they end up learning without realizing that they’re learning. It’s been so rewarding.”

The Keep (613 S. 2nd St.), the original location, is currently home to their afterschool program and youth camps, but primarily serves as a board game shop with a wide variety of options in stock.

Their full library of over 1,300 games will be transferred to the new location, but The Keep will remain. It’s worth noting that anyone who eats at the cafe in

“We also provide scholarships to those who need it. Almost no one asks about it, but we’d love to be able to support families that might not be able to afford to experience either our after-school program or one of our camps,” Kat said. “We love this community and want to make sure that every kid, every family feels welcome here.”

After years of working in higher education as a Political Science professor, Taylor Jenkins and her husband, Kevin, decided to make a change that would bring more joy to their lives, and the lives of others. They opened the doors to The Philly Game Shop in 2019, and expanded into their current location during the summer of 2023.

“We built a gaming space that is intentionally inclusive—we serve kids and adults, up through age 50 typically—and

we grew a community around that concept,” said Taylor. “The older crowd that we serve tells us that they are so happy to have a space to hang out on the weekends that’s not a bar. Our game shop is a great alternative to the South Street nightlife.”

While all of their events are familyfriendly, The Philly Game Shop (PGS for short) tends to draw a crowd for people between the ages of 20 and 50, who are interested in game matches and tournaments that involve role playing.

Their big new space can accommodate 60 seats, as well as a back room that is available for private gaming and events. When building out this current location, Taylor and Kevin customized the private room to include adjustable lighting, a warm and inviting environment, and plenty of peace and quiet, especially for those looking to role play.

For those interested in participating in the community events, PGS hosts a variety of fun gaming options throughout the week. PGS also has a rotating schedule of card game events and tournaments like Magic The Gathering, Pokemon, and Disney’s Lorcana.

“Our website has a basic calendar but we also have a Discord server for our community which provides real-time updates from the staff about who’s available to play and which games are being featured at certain times,” Taylor said. “We’re also

When asked what she loves most about running PGS, Taylor doesn’t hesitate before offering her response: “The best part about table games is that you have to play with other people, so there are always opportunities for making new friends. And the fact that our location is just off South Street. I used to come down here as a teenager and it really feels like a homecoming.”

Painting Paired with an Evening on South Street

I

t’s a Thursday night, and as the sun goes down, the party’s getting started at 611 South Street. Music is playing, drinks are flowing, and there is a paintbrush in the hands of the adult attendees, seated to try (or continue) their hand at art.

This is what a typical evening (or afternoon!) looks like at Painting with a Twist, a local paint-and-sip studio that allows you to create art—no experience required—with the help of local artist instructors. It’s the perfect activity for winter with the ability to host nearly 30 people in each of the business’ two studios.

“I consider it an alternative to a night out. It’s something you do with family, friends, and dates. This is something where you take part in the entertainment and the creating,” said manager Anthony Briglia.

Briglia is a lifelong Philadelphia resident who went to art school and graduated with a BFA in illustration before joining the team at Painting with a Twist. He worked his way up to a managerial position at the former Bainbridge location and is now on South Street.

This location feels like home to him— reminiscing about his youth here and the days of gum trees on the street (a South Street visitor tradition of sticking chewed gum to the trunks of trees that were ultimately removed for sidewalk upgrades in 2017). “It’s nice being around here,” said Briglia. “I like the proximity to a lot of types of places. Lots of different food places! You get all sorts of people here locals, tourists.”

The painting classes, run by artists, offer step-by-step guidance from a painter on a platform with an easel, as well as hands-on assistance from artists circulating the floor where attendees sit.

Artist Instructor, Lauren Mohr, has been painting forever. “It’s always been a part of my life. [At 5 years old] I remember painting with glitter watercolors. I painted fairies with flowers!”

During an evening of creating a sce-

nic tree painting, participants laugh and smile as Mohr circulates the room assisting beginners and returning painters alike: suggesting a little more blue here, a little more yellow there, other ways to hold the brush, and to trust themselves.

She stops to take a photo for a budding artist who remarks about how much fun they’re having, echoing the sort of experience Painting with a Twist hopes all participants of all levels walk away with.

“This isn’t a school, it’s a fun activity,” he said. “It’s fun art, not fine art!”

Use Your Imagination to Take a Tour of South Philadelphia’s “Old Jewish Quarter”

ant to tour your neighborhood through a fresh set of eyes?

Here’s your opportunity to have a fascinating glimpse into Philadelphia’s “Old Jewish Quarter.”

The Village features a rich, fascinating history of Jewish immigrants, which today’s residents may not know. Its beginnings can be traced to the Russian pogroms against the Jews in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. (Pogrom is defined as an organized massacre of a par-

ticular ethnic group, in particular that of Jewish people in Russia or Eastern Europe in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.) These deadly raids brought three great waves of Jews to Philadelphia. They put down roots in what became known as the city’s Jewish quarter: between 2nd and 6th, Spruce, and Christian streets [to-

day termed the “OLD JEWISH QUARTER” spanning Queen Village and Society Hill].

Interestingly, many European immigrants preferred sailing to Philadelphia rather than New York’s Ellis Island because the latter was rumored to be more stringent about entry rules.

In Philadelphia, immigrants disembarked at the Washington Avenue Immigration Station at the end of Washington Avenue at Pier 53 on the Delaware River, south of the modern-day Penn’s Landing waterfront district. Here, small houses could be rented cheaply, the garment industry would flourish, and these newcomers would establish a city within a city, with its own language, theaters, banks, houses of worship, restaurants, and schools. Thanks to Harry D. Boonin’s 1999 book, The Jewish Quarter of Philadelphia, there is a glimpse into this (mostly) vanished world highlighting 10 interesting points.

1. In the late 1800s, Philadelphia led the nation in “sweatshops,” a production system in which clothing manufacturers gave out work to contractors who sublet it to immigrant workers armed with sewing machines. There were documented miserable conditions in these shops (in summer, workers moved their machines outdoors to try to avoid contracting tuberculosis),

which led to the rise of unions and strikes, including one in 1909 involving 15,000 young women and girls belonging to the Ladies’ Waist Makers’ Union Local No. 15.

2. At the Wheatley Dramatic Hall (511 South 5th Street), as many as 500 men, women, and children at a time attended performances in Yiddish. (The Spanish Inquisition was one popular play. 15 cents for a gallery ticket, 25 cents for a rear parquet seat and 50 cents for the front rows.). An apple stand sold beer, peanuts, sour balls, fruit, and pretzels between acts, and the orchestra read its music by candlelight.

3. Before present-day Society Hill became the northern part of the Jewish quarter, it was owned by the Free Society of Traders, an economic development company chartered by William Penn in 1682. The company owned a plot of land extending from Spruce to Pine between the Delaware and Schuylkill rivers. A hill near Front and Pine became known as “the Society’s hill,” then “Society Hill.” The name was no longer in use by the time the Russian immigrants arrived. But in the 1950s, Albert M. Greenfield, chair of the City Planning Commission that was redeveloping the area, proposed the name “Old City Urban Renewal

Area,” fearing the classist connotations of “Society Hill,” but realtors loved the uppity name, and it stuck.

4. In the 1890s, a survey of the area around the Wheatley Dramatic Hall found only 11 bathtubs for 1,900 residents, and four were being used to store firewood. The Public Baths Association was organized to provide washing facilities for the poor, including two bathhouses in the 400 block of Gaskill Street: one for men, with 26 showers and one tub, and one for women, with 14 showers and three tubs. Five cents bought you a room, a towel, soap, and hot and cold water, for yourself, your children and your clothes.

5. At the Washington Market, a “shambles” or slaughterhouse opened in 1857 between 3rd and 5th Streets on Bainbridge. Each butcher was limited to selling one kind of meat: beef, pork, or mutton. Each year on George Washington’s birthday, the butchers put on silk hats and paraded through town. In the Times-Philadelphia newspaper in 1887, a piece headlined “The Russian Hebrews: A Peculiar People Settled in Philadelphia” mused, “Some of them are doing a thriving business without as much as being able to form an English sentence.”

6. In the late 1880s on Yom Kippur (the holiest day of the Jewish New Year),an anarchist named Louis Moskovitz incited a riot. Moskovitz opened his grain and bean stand across the street from a synagogue at 322 Bainbridge, putting on the ritual robe and prayer shawl, and reading socialist literature. It took two patrol wagons of policemen to quell the irate Orthodox Jews (likewise clad in robes and shawls), who were incensed by his “God-blasphemy.”

7. As a special indulgence, Kartchmans’ Bathhouses at 313–321 Monroe Street (today converted to condos), which featured Russian baths, swimming pools, kosher mikvahs and salt baths, offered a “Russian massage” administered with a bundle of wet oak leaves dipped in hot, soapy water. Men often followed bathing with games of cards.

8. Ukrainian-born photographer Elias Goldensky (1867–1943), who had a studio on the second and third floors of the Captain James Abercrombie House at 270 South Second Street, shot portraits of such celebrities as Maxim Gorky, Al Jolson and President Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

9. In 1905, the Hebrew Literature Society at 310–312 Catharine Street had

a gym, a 500-seat lecture hall, 4,000 books in English, Russian, Hebrew, Yiddish, and German, and 700 members. Professors at Penn frequently lectured at the society on Sundays.

This building, too, was converted to condos.

10. In 1913, a real estate broker placed an ad in the Jewish Herald with the heading “The Time of Singing Is Come,” from the Song of Solomon. It enticed Jews to leave the crowded Jewish quarter and move to the “fresh air” and “beautiful country landscape” of Strawberry Mansion. Such ads were highly successful; it was largely in “the Mansion” and West Philly that the next generation of Jewish Philadelphians was raised. ■

Bainbridge Green Goes Blue!

B

ainbridge Green, the pocket park on Bainbridge Street spanning 3rd to 5th Streets, received a makeover through two big volunteer cleanups on September 28 and November 3.

QVNA partnered with the South Street MiniStation to spruce up the space. Doz-

ens of volunteers worked alongside commanding officer, Lt Steve Ricci, and several Village police officers to paint, rake, sweep, clean, and trim.

A group of students from Temple University used the November 3 cleanup as a service day, during which Representative

Mary Isaacson stopped by to talk about the importance of civic engagement.

Bennett Compost collected the leaves and tree trimmings to prevent unnecessary waste from ending up in a landfill.

S

pring may be months away but that doesn’t mean it’s time to put away the gardening gloves! While our outdoor to-do lists may be shorter during the winter, there’s still important work to be done to keep our neighborhood looking good year-round.

Winter IS the Perfect Time for Weeding Weeds don’t always take a break during the winter season. In fact, they often thrive in chilly conditions, giving them a head start way before the first perennials begin to pop.

Make it a point to check for weeds growing in your tree pits, sidewalks, container gardens, and back yards. Tackling them now will save you time once the warmer months arrive.

While a few weeds outside your front door may not appear to be a major concern, if left unattended, they have the potential to cause significant chaos. Weeds grow, well, like weeds! This means they can break down sidewalks, weaken nearby structures, and create hazardous conditions for both pedestrians and drivers. Certain types of weeds can grow to the size of trees, infiltrating walls, cracks in sidewalks,

Homemade Weed Killer Mix a gallon of white vinegar, one cup of salt, and one tablespoon of dish soap in a large container. Give it a good stir, then pour into a spray bottle for easy use. Save the remainder for when you need it.

Salt and vinegar possess acetic acid, which dehydrates and exterminates the weed. Dish soap diminishes the liquid’s surface tension, enabling it to penetrate the weed’s pores.

Apply this solution in the afternoon when the sun is shining to aid the drying process. Thoroughly saturate the weed by spraying it from a close distance, but be sure to keep it away from any plants you want to keep alive! and even storm drains. Furthermore, they can harm and even kill surrounding trees and plants by depriving them of sunlight, water, and essential nutrients. Weeds also have the tendency to attract pests and serve as traps for litter and debris.

Start weeding by simply putting on your gloves and pulling them out by hand. For more stubborn varieties, use a shovel or even a screwdriver to dislodge the roots.

Winter Care for Trees In addition to regularly weeding your tree pits, it’s crucial to give your trees special attention during the winter season. This is especially important for young trees as they are still developing their root system.

The colder months are ideal for pruning, so now is the time to trim off any dead branches. If you are unsure where to start, reach out to our local Queen Village Tree Tenders for advice. Dan is the best!

During extended dry periods, give your trees a light watering. However, be sure to choose warmer days for this task when the temperatures are close to 40 degrees or above. Refrain from watering when it’s freezing out to avoid causing any damage.

Also, don’t forget to take down outdoor tree lights once the holiday season is over. Leaving light strands on the tree for an extended period can damage the bark, obstruct sap flow, and cause serious harm to the tree. ■

A Tradition in Mario Lanza Park Still Bring the Best Dressed Crowd

I

t started as a suggestion at a QVNA community meeting 17 years ago of how to celebrate Halloween for the Village's littlest neighbors—the ones with limited walking-and-gathering skills required for the marathon trick-or-treat evening.

But thanks to QVNA volunteers David O’Donnell and Tony Moran and their trusty card table set up with candy, the idea ballooned into a must-attend event.

Park. It was such a hit that other neighbors brought out tables and set up more candy stations for the crowd. Funds are collected for the Friends of Mario Lanza to support their labor of love in maintaining the park.

It’s always a fun time for parents and kids alike to enjoy the costumed tradition during daylight hours and have the kids in bed in time before the sugar crash hits!

So, if you have yet to make this evening of confection and costume adoration—a tradition for many families among us— mark your calendar for next year! ■

there’s no counter or tables to sit at. And while many pizza purveyors have huge menus, your choice here is limited to a slice of plain pizza or a whole pie that is either cheese, extra cheese, pepperoni, mushroom, or onion. Don’t get fancy by asking for a combination of these. Ain’t gonna happen. In compensation for your lack of choices, your pie will be the size of a small flying saucer.

Note: When you carry out Lorenzo and Sons pie in your gigantic pizza box, be careful if walking into a stiff breeze. You could go airborne.

It’s among the most affordable and least pretentious restaurants around. Unlike the umpteen choices you’ll have for entrees, their single dessert choice is baklava— handmade by the owner’s mother.

While I was there, a few local nurses were extolling the qualities of the white pizza slices that they looked forward to every Friday. My slice of cheese pizza was delicious.

Lorenzo’s Pizza 900 Christian Street Lorenzospizza.net 215-922-2540 Don’t confuse this Italian Market area pizzeria with Lorenzo’s and Son on South Street. They’re not related. As opposed to the South Street place, this Lorenzo’s at 9th and Christian Streets has a huge

choice of various style pizzas, plus a full menu of Italian grab and go fare. And, unlike the take-out only option on South Street, there are some places to sit inside and out, weather permitting.

Darkened windows, no visible menus, and a crowd waiting expectantly all lend an air of mystery. If you step inside, you’ll see boxes being loaded and money changing hands. They only take cash. Despite the enigmatic exterior and the small size of their counter, Angelo’s has a huge selection of pizzas. And based on the swarm of patient customers standing outside, they also have a loyal following.

Santucci’s 901 S. 10th Street Santuccispizza.com 215 825-5304 A family affair for over 60 years, this Italian Market area pizzeria stakes claims to being the original square pizza in Philadelphia but is best known for its “sauce on top,” Northern Italy-style pizza. Santucci’s also has a large selection of pies and other Italian fare. If you really love what they offer and have always wanted to run a pizzeria, you can franchise a Santucci’s yourself! South Street Bridge to Extend Across Columbus Boulevard

et ready for some exciting changes to our waterfront! This past September, the Central Access Philadelphia (CAP) Project was kicked off with a milestone ceremony as the project transitions from planning to groundbreaking.

The Park at Penn’s Landing, a $329 million investment in the waterfront, will create a 11.5-acre public space that covers I-95 and Columbus Boulevard and replaces existing bridges over the expressway that connect the waterfront to Society Hill between Chestnut and Walnut Streets. Included in the plans are aspects of the current space that are wellused, such as the rink and amphitheater, along with maintaining a presence for the existing memorials. New features of the park will include increased gardens and water features, as well as a new pavilion and cafe. The project is scheduled for completion by spring 2028.

Now that things are underway, Elaine Elbich, portfolio manager for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, says those involved with the project are feeling, “anticipation of seeing the first construction starting to happen and how it’s all going to work out.” She adds, “Everyone knows what the pretty pictures look like, but now everyone’s going to see what it’s actually going to look like. I think there’s going to be a lot of relief to see things actually get built.”

Included in the project is a new South Street pedestrian bridge that will be extended from its current endpoint on the westside of Columbus Boulevard over to the roadway to the Delaware River Trail on the eastside. Early renderings show that the large arched pedestrian bridge will end in a graceful corkscrew. This particular design is a signature structure called a “tied-arch” bridge. Noticeably absent are William Dickey King’s Stroll (Stickmen) sculptures that have graced the existing bridge since 1995. Elbich says they

are still discussing with the Philadelphia Arts Commission regarding “possible relocation to somewhere nearby, but a lot depends on the city.”

The CAP Project is part of the overall strategic plan for the Delaware riverfront, which aims to create a vibrant area for residents to enjoy and revitalize economic development within the central I-95 corridor. “Plant a seed, and it blossoms.

It’s going to be one park but the effects are going to be so much more to a waterfront. It’s going to be exponential,”

Elbich says about how changes like this tend to affect everything nearby from local businesses to property values. “It will transform the waterfront. It will bring a lot more amenities and benefits to living in this area,” she adds.

Residents around the project should anticipate some minor changes during construction, including lane shifts for expressway entrance and exit ramps, brief road blocks on Columbus Boulevard and Front Street, and clearly marked detours. Detours for both local traffic and through traffic on I-95 should be marked as well. The existing pedestrian bridges—South Street, Walnut Street and Chestnut Street—will also have closures. However, access between Center City and the waterfront will remain possible throughout construction via Market Street, Dock Street, and Washington Avenue. The project hopes to keep Columbus Boulevard open in some capacity for the duration, limiting

full closures to overnight. There will be detours on SEPTA routes 12, 17, 21, 25, 33, and 42 throughout the project. Riders should check with SEPTA for the latest information.
