Uncommon Sense Revolutionary Device Makes Cooking A Breeze Are you tired of having to mop up the stove every time you make breakfast? Are you tired of having your lunch splatter all over the floor as you cook it? Are you tired of being burned every time you try to move your dinner to the table? Well, look no further than… the PAN! The Pan is a revolutionary device, consisting of a ‘bowl’ to keep food off of the stove so no wiping is needed! The ‘bowl’ of the pan also has cutting-edge technology in that it actually has sides to allow the food to stay inside it, so the food doesn’t even splatter over the floor when you cook it. The pan’s technology doesn’t stop there. The designers of the pan also implemented a ‘handle,’ which is a long, slender heat-insulated bar, or stick, to hold on to while transporting food. The heat-insulated bar protects fingers against the heat inside the pan. The pan is currently enjoying its much-deserved attention, with nearly 100% of households owning at least one.
UFO Spotted Floating in Sky Recently, in the depths of the sky of Point Nemo were spotted several unidentified flying objects. Seeming to use advanced technology to defy gravity and remain in the air with little energy, these objects also are able to shape-shift, sometimes taking on the appearance of a dog, elephant or simply a great white mass.
Most of these UFOs, however, are benign; they do not wreak much havoc. Others seem to occasionally eject water. UFO enthusiasts have reached a general consensus that this happens when the objects get too heavy and need to jettison the liquids in order to remain in flight. Several of these objects have apparently recently accumulated extreme amounts of atmospheric and water samples (what they are trying to do with these samples remains unknown) and they have needed to jettison large amounts of water, as well as releasing some sort of energy, which manifests in a bright flash usually accompanied by a rumble seconds later. Scientists are worried that this released energy is an attempt to harm humans, and the possibility cannot be discounted; however firm believers in extraterrestrial contact say otherwise. “These releases of energy might have the potential to harm humans,” says Naf Ofu, Chairman of the Point Nemo UFO Association, “but it seems unlikely that this is done purposely. What kind of civilization would try to form peace with us by attacking us?” By Jieruei Chang

Uncommon Sense Breaking News: Santa arrested! NEW YORK, NEW YORK - Entertainment sensation Santa Claus arrested for fraud, embezzlement, and worst of all, LYING TO LITTLE CHILDREN. So far, he has been charged with watching these small citizens of this city. We have current information that he knows when you are sleeping, knows if you are awake. Security cameras with tracking feed have already been traced back to the north pole. Santa is a known and wanted criminal for breaking and entering through chimneys, and breaking through windows with a crowbar. If he manages to escape, physical descriptions are a older man with half a gray beard. Yes, half. When we caught him, his beard got stuck in the police car door, and we had to cut it off. Also, a few of his toes got stuck in there and had to be amputated, but nobody thinks this is of significance. His accomplices, 8 reindeer and some very short adult people, are behind bars as well. Why You Shouldn’t Believe in Science (or anything else), Proved By Science Science is stupid. Trying to understand it is like trying to talk to an ant, it’s simply not possible. Many people call themselves ‘Physicists,’ and while they know much more than I ever could, they have absolutely no idea what they are talking about. Take for example this sentence you are reading. According to modern science, it could disappear and be replaced with a penguin in the blink of eye. Anything can happen.* “Why?!” There’s no short answer, but let’s start with a simple and overused idea: The Multiverse Theory, an idea credited to Hugh Everett. In order to understand this theory, we must first understand how our universe works, to the best of our knowledge. From what we can tell, the universe started expanding from a point roughly 13.7 billion years from now. So, right now, the light traveling away from the ‘center’ of the universe is 13.7 billion light years from it’s starting position. One good measure for the edge of our universe is the CMB, or cosmic background radiation. This is simply one of the original bursts of light created from the birth of our universe. I spoke to a graduate from Princeton University who majored in physics about the CMB what would happen when crossing it. He quickly put the idea off, as it seems impossible to cross this barrier. The CMB is traveling at the speed of light away from the center of the universe, and we are inside of it’s expanding bubble. The fastest we could ever travel would be 99.9% the speed of light, so we would never be able to catch up to it. I looked back at him, and carefully chewed my cheese stick that I had stealthily grabbed from a nearby table offering snacks. In between bites, I asked a simple question, “But what if we did?”
He thought about it for a while, and then asked his colleague to come over. We were juxtaposed in every way; he sported a tie and dress shoes, while I wore a unbuttoned shirt and wielded a stringy dairy product, yet this question had him stuck. Why was it so hard? According to the ‘Infinite Universe’ variant of the multiverse theory, once you pass the space past the first photon, or the first atom, you have left our universe. Such a thing is again, impossible, since whatever vehicle or spacecraft passing this point would be a part of this universe, and therefore expand it to where you were. But let’s say you did get to this point outside of our universe, and you looked around. You would see nothing. Literally nothing exists here. If you turn the lights off in a room and shut the curtains, it may seem like nothing exists in that room, but that isn't’t true. There is of course the air floating around you, and even a few photons which are too few and too tiny for your eyes to perceive. But out here, in the void, this would be the only place to have nothing affecting you. Outside of the pull of gravity, this object would be able to travel forever, only stopping if it collided with another universe.
*this is all based off of theory, but it hasn’t been proven wrong and it was developed in the 1950s.

An in-depth Explanation on why Science is pointless (and isn’t) By Nate Myers
“Well that took a while. What can we do here?” At the risk of sounding like a nerd, you could perform lots of science experiments here that could never be possible anywhere else. For example, the common idea that objects will drift around forever would only be possible here. Inside our universe, there will always be something to hit. I’m not suggesting that our object will crash into a planet, but in space there is always molecules, even though they will be spaced far apart. Also, everywhere in our universe is affected by gravity. The Earth, right now, is pulling on every star within 4.53 billion light years of it (due to the fact that the earth has only existed for 4.53 billion years and the gravity from it has only existed during that time), and every molecule that the earth is made of is in some way pulling on every other molecule in our universe. So, this moving object inside our universe would be pulled on lightly by every other object in the universe and would therefore be slowed down over the period of… a very long time. Outside of the pull of gravity, this object would be able to travel forever, only stopping if it collided with another universe. “Another Universe!?” Yes. According to the Multiverse Theory, there is an infinite amount of universes (universi?) besides ours. Every time a choice is made, another universe is created. I’ll make one right now. Lift your finger 1 inch up. Do it. Lift your finger. Just in saying this, I have created an ‘uncountable infinity’ amount of universes. (the concept of uncountable infinity is described well by the youtuber Vsauce in his video titled The Banach–Tarski Paradox)
In some universes, you lifted your finger exactly one inch off whatever surface you had it on. In another universe, you lifted it half an inch. In another, you didn’t lift it at all. In one you didn’t have a finger. This chain of possibilities will go on forever. In one universe, you turned into a dinosaur before you could raise your finger. Maybe that’s this one. “Okay that’s great, but what does that have to do with physics or anything else?” So everything that happens makes more universes, and each of those make more universes. But let’s think about one of the first ‘decisions’ that a universe had to make: what should be the laws of physics? If this decision was different the the path we took, a universe may have ended up with different circumstances than ours, and since any law of physics is possible, anything is possible. This old Cliche has science behind it! But I have yet to answer the question: “Why is science stupid?” Well, science is pursuit of knowledge. But if all of these universes exist, figuring out everything in the universe is impossible. So science is pointless, right? Not necessarily. Let’s take a step back and think about our life. What is the point of it? No one really knows, but the most common answer would be ‘Happiness’ (or 42) Maybe one day, with sufficient technology, we could travel to the perfect universe. Maybe, one day, if we keep working towards out knowledge of everything, we can all be spoiled brats doing whatever we want in another universe. Or maybe we could even travel to a universe where 11 we know everything, if such a place exists. There is a universe where we can talk to ants.
Current Events 2020 Elections: Though election day itself is still distant, the campaign is already underway, many candidates have already declared their candidacy, trying to get a leg up over the competition. They are for the most part on the democratic side, as generally candidates don’t challenge the sitting president in a primary race. Those democrats and ones expected to join include, Elizabeth Warren, Michael Bloomberg, Cory Booker, Bernie Sanders and Joe Biden. Amongst these the three most popular are, Joe Biden, Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren. Though no-one has yet declared their candidacy on the other side, several are known to be considering the move. Amongst them are Larry Hogan the governor of Maryland, a populist, centrist, anti-Trump man, that stands a considerable chance against the president. If he were to join, he could seriously damage the president’s popularity, making him less likely to succeed in a general election. So now all we have to do is to wait.
Attorney General: The former Attorney General, (AG) was Jeff Sessions, a man who had recused himself from the Mueller investigations (meaning he deferred authority on the matter to his second in command Rod Rosenstein, because he himself had engaged in communications with Russia on behalf of the Trump Campaign). This was the very thing the Special Counsel was investigating. His recusal heavily angered Trump as it meant that he didn’t have a person who could protect him on the matter. So, he fired Jeff Sessions and appointed someone who could better protect him if the need arose. This appointee is William Barr, a man who served as AG under the Bush Administration. Though he says he would not harm the Special Counsel he has made many comments on the topic that are overly critical and certainly not be trusted on the matter. Other than that his policies fit with that of Trump, he will definitely make an interesting addition to the Trump team. 12

Government Shutdown: For 35 days this January and December, the government was shutdown over border security. The republicans wanted $5.7 Billion for a border wall, but democrats were only willing to give money to border security in general and not a wall. This caused a major conflict as a border wall was Trump’s main campaign promise, and not fulfilling it would be a major hit to his popularity. The reason this caused a shutdown is that the bill to fund the border wall, also funded many other things, and if no bill was signed, then those parts of the government aren’t getting funded and are thusly forced to shutdown. The workers for those parts of the government are either forced to work without pay, or are furloughed, that is left without work for however long the shutdown lasts. This had major political ramifications as Trump was largely seen responsible for the shutdown and as most Americans, though not necessarily members of the freedom caucus, don’t like shutdowns. These two things in conjunction meant that, Trump’s popularity suffered a serious dip. It also had other ramifications, the government programs that run food stamps were closed, meaning that people were unable to use those. Farmers and non-profits that depend on federal funding, did not get it, hurting their efficacy. The government was unable to regulate the economy, meaning the stock market fluctuated even more than it typically does. All of which added to the political fallout for Trump causing him to in the end sue for peace and sign a bill that reopened the government for about a month. The question thus becomes, will we be able to avert another major shutdown when the government 13 runs out of funding again, just a few short weeks from now.

In a double boiler, melt the chocolate Steps and shortening, stirring occasionally until smooth. 1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking pan. Combine the flour, 2/3 cup confectioners' sugar, and butter. Pat dough into prepared pan. Bake for 20 minutes in the preheated oven, until slightly golden. While the crust is baking, whisk together eggs, white sugar, flour, and lemon juice until frothy. Pour this lemon mixture over the hot crust. Return to the preheated oven for an additional 20 to 25 minutes, or until light golden brown. Cool on a wire rack. Dust the top with confectioners' sugar. Cut into squares.

Why do people contemplate about the meaning of life when you can just search it up in the dictionary? Are ducks ductile? How did the Romans do Algebra if x was always 10? Why doesn’t lipstick make your lips stick together? Aren’t chocolate and vanilla vegetables since they’re made of beans? Why is the slowest part of the day called “rush hour”? Why do we have to take tests on stuff when we just forget it all the second we walk out of the classroom? What if school actually stood for “Seven Cruddiest Hours Of Our Lives”? Why do parents tell kids that lying is bad when most parenting tactics are based on lies? What do normal dogs think about police dogs? Why doesn’t social studies teach how to socialize with people? How many holes does a straw have? Why do we say “bye-bye” but not “hi-hi”? Are “practice makes perfect”, and “nobody’s perfect”, not oxymorons?

JW Events
On February 1st, the students of JW came together to donate food to food drives because of the government shutdown. One of the major food welfare programs in New Jersey (SNAP) may be shutdown with the government as well. This is why it was very important to donate food to local food drives. To kick this fund off, we wore funny and cool hats to school. On a side note, the candy for troops initiative collected 1385 pounds of candy for the troops. Youth Advisory Committee On February 5th, the PHS youth advisory club gave a talk to 7th graders on mental health, emotional wellness, and time management. The committee is a group of PHS students who decided to give back to their former school by helping them with those subjects. The committee chair is Highschool senior Eli Wasserman. They talked about managing your school, social activates, and how to balance time on your smartphone. Fun Friday Fun friday was held on Friday the 1st of february and took place in the JW gym because this fantastic party was only open to 6th graders. Tickets were sold on Wednesday and Friday in front of the cafeteria during 6th grade lunch. Participants played in a gaga pit, board games, twister, and nok hockey with their friends. It was a great way for the new middle schoolers to introduce themselves and get to know other people within their grade. Shrek the Musical This year’s Spring musical is Shrek based on the book Shrek! by William Steig. Shrek also has a movie adaptions and couple other spin offs and sequels. This middle school play adaptation has 35 roles. It was written by Jeanine Tesori and David Lindsay-Abaire. The drama teacher casted and directed the entire play, so be sure to give a big thanks to her if you enjoy the play, . The show will premiere on Thursday March 7th. At 7:30 PM in the JW auditorium and will hold more shows on the following Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at 7:30 PM,7:30 PM, and 1:00 PM respectively.

Chinese New Year! & The Dragon Boat Festival The Dragon Boat Festival is one of the traditional festivals in China, which is on the fifth of May of the lunar calendar. The dragon boat festival is also known as Zhengyang Festival, Dragon Day Festival, Midday Festival, May Festival, Dragon Boat Festival and so on. The main customs of The Dragon Boat Festival are eating ZongZi and having dragon boat races. And the custom of eating ZongZi has been prevalent in China since ancient times. The dragon boat race was also very grand in the Southern coastal areas of China. After the festival being known by other foreign countries, it was deeply loved by people from all over the world and so an international competition was formed. The Dragon Boat Festivals started in the Warring States Period when a poet, Qu Yuan, committed suicide by drowning himself in he river. Later, people formed this Dragon Boat Festival in order to commemorate him. Eating Zongzi during the Dragon Boat Festival is a traditional custom of the Chinese Dragon Boat Festival. According to records, the origin of the Zongzi was as early as the Spring and Autumn Period. In the Jin Dynasty, Xunzi was officially designated as the Dragon Boat Festival food. Up to now, every year in early May, Chinese people dip rice, wash leaves, and bag Zongzi, and their varieties are more diverse. The tradition of eating dumplings has been prevalent in China for thousands of years and has spread to North Korea, Japan, and Southeast Asian countries.
