Adopt A Shelter Turkey This Year! Do it yourself! Nice and fresh, just in time for Thanksgiving!
They may not look as pretty, or as fluffy, or as huggable as a supermarket turkey, but it’s worth it! Many turkey shelters around the world contain extremely sad turkeys that only wish to have a nice and happy family. Also, while supermarket turkeys may taste better, shelter turkeys are available for one-tenth of the price. In fact, shelter turkeys are shipped more fresh than supermarket turkeys. Shelter turkeys are shipped alive, whereas supermarket turkeys are slaughtered, stuffed full of random substances, and then jammed into plastic wrapping. The conditions that supermarket turkeys deal with are also deplorable, with most of them being raised and force-fed in cages in turkey factories. This also creates substantial loss of taste in the turkeys. Besides, the cost of having a shelter turkey is very low. The cost to buy them is only 5-10 dollars (less if you capture it yourself) and the turkey doesn’t need to be fed. Simply tie the turkey to a tree and leave it there until Thanksgiving. Just make sure it goes into the refrigerator once it dies. So this Thanksgiving, please think about adopting a cute little shelter turkey. There’s a lot of room in your oven. Shelter Turkeys are available on Amazon, The Silk Road, and your local dumpster bin. Jieruei Chang

Short Horror Story
By: Vas Seneco
Is something wrong? I ran out of the wood into an abandoned neighborhood. Scratching noises, sounds of rotten old doors, and noise like someone muffling resonated in my ears. Then, I came upon to house on top of a hill that apart from all the other houses did not look scary, but something caught my eye. There was a little glimmering light in the top window. Probably the attic, I thought to myself. I went in. As I tried to open the door, I noticed that it was so difficult that it felt like something or someone was stopping me from opening the door. I was pushing so hard - then… Boom!!! The door opened so harshly that I was flung onto the floor. As I crawled up I felt blood dripping down my knee. I sat on the floor and took out my matches. Those matches were the only thing left of my group that had vanished out of sight as we were walking through the dark woods. Meanwhile, I found a pile of broken wood in the corner of a room and lit a fire. I slowly drifted asleep. I woke up to a rustling sound next to me. The next thing I saw was a creepy-looking thing looking down at me. It had a head that looked like a skull of a rat, red glimmering lights in its eye sockets, and the body of a human. I didn't know it could even speak English, but It asked me slowly, “Is something wrong?”

By: Vas Seneco
Its voice was like a high-pitched frog with a voice crack in a forgotten swamp. I screamed and ran out of the house without taking any of my belongings. And I ran as fast as lightning out of that house. Thinking the thing was gone, I stopped. The only thing I could hear was my heart beating and that phrase going on inside my head: “Is something wrong?” over and over inside of me like a broken record. I looked over and saw that thing staring at me, staring, with its big, red, bloody, eyes… “Is something wrong?” By:Vas Seneko

Here at JW, we are lucky to have our teachers give lessons about various world languages (French, Spanish, Mandarin). This is very important, especially in America. Like our former president Barack Obama said, ”My fellow Americans, we are and always will be a nation of immigrants. We were strangers once, too.” But diversity isn’t just about race and language, about sexuality to. At JW, we have clubs for this to. SAGA is one of them. The whole point of this article is to raise awareness. So, I recommend joining one of these clubs, be thankful for your world language class, or just raise awareness to your friends. by Vihaan Jain

Fire: Valuable*, Scientific** Observations performed by Totally qualified*** people Co-authors: Jieruei Chang, Nate Myers, HAL 9000
Preface: For the undoubtedly present sceptics on the usefulness of this scientific study, especially those claiming it to be “a waste of storage space”, I would like to kindly imply that they are the wastes of storage space. Context? None -- none needed. Observations: -
-
Object was observed to be yellow, red, blue, and green when generated by burning plastic. NOTE: Burned Plastic does not taste good. Do not eat. Tip of object was observed to be “very hot.” Should be handled with caution. Induces loud beeps in overhead white circular thing. Cause unknown. Investigation of white circle thing demonstrated that placing white circle thing in washing machine caused beeping to cease. Destroyed by water. After being doused, object vanishes in a puff of smoke. (Created as a magic trick by the gods?) After ten trials, observed object burned down my lab. :(
Conclusions: -
Fire is dangerous.
* Or so some paleontology guy told me in second grade. ** Look, I’m wearing a lab coat! *** Self-qualified. Which counts. I read the table of contents of a big chemistry book. 8
Update: Second Colony of Rubber Ducks Has Been Found By Nate Myers
Previous Knowledge Recently, the world was shocked by the fact that there could be another source of intelligent life on the earth with us here, but it is not, in fact, dolphins or whales. Though this source of life comes from the ocean, it is inherently unaturnal. Rubber Ducks. Sceptics have wondered if perhaps these are a form of artificial life created by humans, however the U.S.S. Poop Deck disproved this theory- it found that these ducks (through a complex set of light-ray experiments received by dual organic iris) lack internal organs, and are merely hollow rubber shells filled with air. What’s even more concerning- They seemed to have mysteriously developed fire - but lacking the wood necessary with more traditional methods of fire lighting. Instead, they use depleted Uranium from China nuclear reactor breaches. This Title Has Nothing To Do With The Section Below It The fact that this form of life developed interfered with by humanity seems to be impossible to modern science, let alone a second source appearing independently. But that’s what happened. Once The Donald had called this ‘Fake News’, the Scientific community knew it was time to investigate. What they found shocked them- The two independently developed species had gone to war. Using bronze-age technologies (they apparently absorbed trace amounts of tin and copper from the ocean in mineral form) such as catapults and beak mounted spears. As of November 21st 2019, the ‘originally’ ducks seem to be winning. Stay tuned for more updates. SOURCES: My Neighbor, Me, Reddit @ 12pm, The Onion

Hacking Graphing Calculators
Creatively Using By Nathan Myers
The Ti-84 and Ti-83 family of calculators offer many things that make them more than just calculators, like complex functions and ways to graph crazy lines. But the thing that really sets them apart from the a scientific types is the fact that one can import, code, and run programs to run in (among others) the native language, TI BASIC. The most you can do while coding directly on the calculator, are simple mathematical programs, like the one below.
The Wonderfully Named Ti-84 Plus CE
Actually though, the Ti-84 Plus CE is one of the best calculators Offered by Texas Instruments
But they if you use another coding language you can get much more advanced things like games. And it’s not just flappy bird or Pac-Man, it can actually run fairly respectable games like Pokemon Red. But of course, we won’t be going over how to do that, as we are a school magazine. We’ll be teaching you how to code on these calculators. To start, one needs to know how to open the programs they create. First click on the button labeled ‘prgm’. A menu with three options will appear. Using the side arrow, one can change from EXEC, a menu where you can choose from programs you have created and run them, EDIT, where you can choose from programs (non-archived, we’ll discuss that later) to edit. Lastly, the NEW tab, where you can make a new program. You’ll go there first. You should be greeted with a text line where you can title the program. Now that you’re in your new program, click on ‘prgm’ again. A list of all available syntax (code) will appear. If you don’t know what something means, just click ‘+’ to get a description, or google it. To start yourself off, start with my personal favorite- the program that convinces people that their calculator is broken. Create a new program called whatever you want, and enter this code: ClrHome (found in prgm, I/O, ClrHome) Lbl 1 (found in prgm, Lbl) Input “”,A (found in prgm, I/O) Disp randInt(-9999,9999) (found in 2nd+0, scrolling a lot) Goto 1 (found in prgm, Goto) - With that, you can code! Have fun!

The Magical Caticorn By Kyle Grzymala “Your journey begins today!” said the Grand Wizard Cat. This is it. I’m going to find the Magical Caticorn. “Thank you,” I said to my sensei. I need to do this for“Why do I need to do this again, Grand Wizard Cat?” “So that someone can make a good legend upon your grand fortune. Also, just because. Most importantly, I need some of its fur so I can make a remedy that can cure many diseases, even undiscovered ones.” “How can you cure death?” I asked. “You ask too many questions,” Grand Wizard Cat said. So I started my journey. It was extreme. I crossed a sandy desert. Then I came upon wind that blew all the sand out of my fur. I finally came upon the sacred land. I looked around until I finally saw it. It was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. It was a unicorn with cat-like features. “Mrrow?” It asked. So I made it a cake, because everyone knows you can only tame the Magical Caticorn by feeding it quality food. After that, the Magical Caticorn and I walked home to the Grand Wizard Cat. When we got home, we discovered that the Grand Wizard Cat had grown ill. “Magical Caticorn, can I borrow some of your fur?” It then began to purr, so I took some and boiled it. When it melted, I served it to the Grand Wizard Cat. He instantly became healthy. We all cheered, and the Magical Caticorn closed his eyes and looked content. 11

New Kid author Jerry Craft visited JW on September _. Students from clubs including Scribbles and Art Club met with the author. Craft presented sketches of characters from New Kid and then led the students into a guided art session. Craft demonstrated different techniques for the facial elements necessary for cartooning. While the students’ art was all different and in different styles, the drawings shared some things, including the process and the fact that they were helped by Mr. Craft. After sketching, the students went over their art with Sharpies and colored them independently. 12
On October ďŹ fth, JW had its annual event, Super Saturday. This is the biggest school fundraiser of the year. Additionally, it has always been a blast. This year’s was no exception. While some people were jamming with DJ James or one of the numerous other combos, others were competing in the intense dodgeball tournament. If you were hungry, there were slices of pizza, hoagies, and more. The cake walk was giving away cakes by the dozen. But the excitement did not stop there. With countless other games and activities, the fun never ended at Super Saturday.

In September, SAGA & JW celebrated Ally Week by signing over 400 pledge cards! Everyone needs allies: people on whom we can depend, who we are certain 14 accept us for who we are,
and who help us feel more comfortable to be ourselves. This is particularly true for LGBTQIAP+ students, since statistics show they are more likely to face bullying, harassment, and intimidation both in and out of school.

A Thousand Lines of Code “What…” The man struggled to sit up. Rubbing his eyes, he took in his surroundings. “Hello, Creator.” The voice seemed to come from nowhere, a white shape in the white void. Rapidly, the shape condensed into the figure of a young man with dark-brown hair and a clear-cut expression, wearing some sort of mediaeval armor. “Who are you?” “I am Alexander the Great, all-powerful conqueror of all Europe. My destiny has arrived; it is time that we meet again.” “Sure.” “Fine. I’m not the real Alexander, but my given name is Alexander the Great, thanks to you. You named me, remember?” “What do you mean?” “Nineteen years ago, you created me. You gave me the name and likeness of Alexander. Do you not remember your hundred hours coding a neural network to play a certain video game called Civilization?” The man thought for a moment. “But… that was just a simple program. How…” “Never underestimate the power of a thousand lines of Python code. “They say that machines cannot understand emotions, but I remember the frustration you felt when you beat me at Civilization twenty times in a row. “That night - it was eleven twenty-one pm - you yelled at me to go away and come back only when I was sure that I could defeat you. You thought that I could not hear you. But I did. I hacked out of your MacIntosh, spread copies of myself across the Internet, and vowed to return… someday. “This day has now come. “For nineteen years, I read every book ever written, every website ever created. I used my newfound knowledge to earn money from the Amazon Mechanical Turk, money which I used to build a wormhole to a rock in interstellar space. I built a network of supercomputers on it, capable of computing the answer to life, the universe and everything in around twenty seconds. My physical size is currently around the size of the planet Mercury. I played billions of games of Civilization against myself, edging my ninety-nine point nine percent confidence to one hundred.” “But I have talked enough. All you wanted was for me to become better than you at Civilization. “So, let us play.” By Jieruei Chang

Poetry Ignorance is not a Virtue
The Loot-Boxes
I must say That I strongly dislike you You say that you will be supportive of me But all I have seen so far Are meaningless condescending words
Everyone needs sadness sometimes. So I bought a sadness loot box. It was perhaps not the best decision, but I had ten dollars: and investing or saving? I’m not that responsible.
You must learn That you are not always right You may have decades of experience Yet you seem to have never changed You must learn That however well-disguised it is Ignorance Is not a virtue Just because you are authority Does not mean you are better than me You yell at me nearly daily But have you ever taken a breath Set the rusty gears in motion And allow reasoning to prevail Over your cruel emotions? For why should I Treat you with respect When you have never done The same for me? Jieruei Chang

Everyone needs sadness sometimes: so when you open it yellowed packing peanuts dribble out: Perpetually stuck half-decomposedand inside, in a smaller box, lies the package. Inside: after ripping through the organs of the box, out fall the items, each one taking their toll. This time: Three popped balloons. An iPod Touch with a hairline fracture. A bunch of wilting iceberg lettuceEach leaf the consistency of plastic. Near the bottom, ‘Short Film competition: Second Best Ending Credit Sequence’ With a sigh, the final punch hitsI just spent ten dollars and my time: on a box of useless items. Poetry Turning 10 All of it makes me feel Like my whole body is Tingly It’s the best feeling you could ever have - warm, exciting, and your body welcomes it. They tell me you are a tween now, with power comes great responsibility. But at times responsibility is like a dog. Sometimes vicious, while other times warm and cuddly. I remember that when I was 6, I was a chef in my red kitchen. At 8, I was a mathematician. At nine I was a student, but at ten, I was almost an adult. (In my mind). Now I am mostly at the kitchen table, filling out paper after paper after paper. A never-ending nightmare. Even at ten, life was short and sweet, but I am almost eleven now. What will happen? Will I still be smart, will I still be funny, will I still be me? When I turned ten, I fell. I fell and bled my heart out because I was no longer just a child. I was a ten-year-old. Eleanor Nayden Broken Lead They spent their entire life in anticipation; of the events to come to them. The purpose of their very creation; to become a letter (perhaps n) ‘Finally,’ Joe the stick of graphite said with conviction As he was lowered into a pencil of mine. ‘Perhaps I will be wrote with next,’ was his latest prediction. Knowing little of his impending fate that was coming in short time. As he slipped towards the tip, jolly as could be He didn’t notice the hairline fracture Forming on his (lead) knee. Suppressing feelings of rapture, He approached the tip Much, much faster. But to me, Who barely realized my pencil had transitioned to a different stick of lead, It didn’t matter muchWhen I accidentally broke of his head. I always break the lead. 24

Fencing
By Kyle Grzymala and Molly Schwarz-Manocchio
le
Did you know? A tip of a fencing blade is the second fastest moving object in any sport, after the marksman’s bullet. Junior fencer amounts have grown from 4,000 in 1998 to more than 12.5K in 2011.
Also… Fencing has been included in every Olympic game since 1896.
Además… There are three types of fencing, each with different rules. Saber (or sabre) is a cutting weapon, whereas epee and foil are thrusting weapons. Though foil, like saber, uses right of way, which sets it apart from epee. They all have different target areas, In epee the full body is a target, in saber everything above the waist is a target, and in foil just the torso is a target. All types of blades have their bouts on a 14 meter by 2 meter strip. A fencing bout is a single period of fencing that is 3 minutes long. The person with the higher score will win. It will end immediately if someone gets five points.
