The fiction novel The Bitter Side Of Sweet by Tara Sullivan follows the characters Seydou and Amadou and their life in a labor camp in Africa. This book deals with the social justice issue which is child labor. Child labor is when kids are forced to work often in brutal conditions. It is a big issue in this world and kids who are involved in child labor are deprived of an education and a normal childhood. I enjoyed reading this book and I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a good read.

The Ant’s Chronicles By Jieruei Chang On a rectangle of hard black stone next to a smattering of soil and dying flowers under the blue sky of a cold planet orbiting a yellow-dwarf star in a galaxy not so far away, there was an ant. This ant was in no aspect special. It was an ordinary ant, and it was searching for food. This ‘ant’ had just found a certain bluish crystal. It crawled up onto the mysterious object, but when it’s mandibles bit on it the ant immediately spit it out. It was salty, and the ant despised the taste, as it trampled around, trying to get rid of the taste in its jaws. Then, as it pondered what this mysterious salty bluish crystal was, the wind picked up and it began to snow. The ant stopped its pondering long enough to realize that it was being blown away in the snowstorm. As it desperately searched the ground, its eyes landed on the salty crystal. It held on to it, but soon the winds strengthened and the crystal cracked in two, sending the ant and a piece of salt flying away into the unforgiving depths of the sky. Winds howled and snow darted past the ant like icy bullets. The snowflakes pounded on the ant’s exoskeleton, melting as they hit the surface. Then finally, a chunk of ice dropped out of the clouds and hit the ant, sending him spiraling towards the ground as darkness took over its mind. Light slowly came back to the ant. Its eyes cleared and it found itself lying on a soft, comfy mattress. This must be heaven, thought the ant. Then the ant looked around and screamed as it realized the horrifying truth: it was trapped in a spiderweb. The ant tried to crawl out, but its abdomen was stuck to the sticky, stringy material. “Well, it looks like our dinner has awoken,” said a fake-pleasant voice. The ant turned to meet eight gleaming, beetle-black eyes. “How are 9 you, my dear?”
Articles Building Your (gaming) Computer: The Smart Path to Power and Efficiency for a Cheap Price While it may seem like a daunting task, building your own computer is the best way to get power and performance at a cheap price. This self-built computer can run games like PUBG on a 4000p, 144Hz monitor on medium-high settings, and blows away the performance of pre-built computers. It even can run VR abilities and overclocking. It’s not that hard to build a PC, and it saves you money. Also, recent tariffs that are soon to be placed by president Trump will raise the costs of computer parts, as the price of raw materials will rise, making computer parts much more expensive to construct. Building a computer offers the ability to customize it; for example, if you play more CPU heavy games, you can opt for an i73 CPU instead of an i53. You can also choose whether you need the ability to overclock 4 your PC, an ability which is almost always locked out on purchased PCs. In total, building your PC offers cheaper prices, allows customization, and many more benefits. 1: Frames Per Second, or how many times the screen changes in a second. For monitors, the amount of FPS they can handle is dictated by Hz. Roughly, every Hz = 1 FPS. It’s a lot easier to build a PC than you think. With recent advancements in computer GPUs, their prices have plummeted, and so have all the prices of other computer components. CPUs are now as fierce as a lion in processing power, motherboards are dropping past the price of a coffee, and cooling systems are so cheap you could probably buy them with Monopoly money. Some consumers may fear that they’ll not know what to do with the parts of their PC once they get them, and will end up confused and lost. Fear not, it’s 2019. The internet has advanced to the point where there are pictures of Abraham Lincoln riding a shark and holding a machine gun, so computer building guides are everywhere. One of the best, I found, was a “How to Build a PC: The Ultimate Guide from Tek Syndicate,” which is linked in the footnote 4 . The average person can assemble a desktop in under six hours, depending on the complexity. Graphic by Building your own PC is a La Sra. Porello craze which started in the early 2000’s after Apple and other hardware/software developers made computers that could be easily customized, and spurred a wave of people developing their own computers. The idea of this slowly lost popularity around 2008 as the economy fell, driving up the price of computer parts. Recently, the prices of computer parts have been dropping dramatically and the idea has been gaining popularity again.
In the end: Build your (gaming) PC, Don’t Buy Of course, it’s not for everyone, but building a (gaming) PC for yourself offers consistently higher quality for a lower price. Also, the advantages of building your own PC won’t last for long with the tariffs which President wants to puts in place the current trade war with China. Dear Scribbles, Someone in my Community Period always keeps talking. He’s so annoying! He always says the stupidest things that no one wants to hear. My community teacher usually gives us food, but thanks to that guy, she just sits down and waits for us to be quiet. What do I do? I really want my snacks! Sincerely, Frustrated Dear Frustrated, Sometimes people can be annoying, and unfortunately you have to deal with it. Even worse, if you act passive aggressive towards them (which I often feel compelled to do when in similar situations) it just makes you the one who’s annoying. The first thing you should do if someone is really bothering you is ask them to stop, which will generally stop the problem.
Try to figure out what compels them to act like that. Can you help them with it? They might feel alienated inside from you, and are trying to get your attention because they want to be friends with you. If they continue, you should probably seek help, or just move away from them. Why hasn’t a psychic won the lottery yet? Okay, so psychics cannot predict your future, they just mess with your mind. They have three main methods of messing with your brain. The first is to say something good is going to happen to you. Not like lottery good, but like getting married and having three kids good. The other is to say something bad will happen to you, like a broken limb. The third is to be really vague like getting a girlfriend and stopping there. Or like having a dog that dies but not saying anything else. They also have weird things hidden in the room they do their stuff in that plays odd effects like fog or sounds. So psychics are liars looking for money and actually can not predict anything. So the chance of one of them winning the lottery is just as small as yours. - James Labas
What if Math was Really Easy But Everyone Was Just Really Stupid? Stereotypically Math is called “hard,” though that single definition is arbitrary. The hardness of Math, or anything, is relative. We have, as of now, no way to
accurately measure the hardness of Math. Even though the usual definition is “the science of numbers and their operations, interrelations, combinations, generalizations, and abstractions and of space configurations and their structure, measurement, transformations, and generalizations,” there are many other ways to define “Math.” In other words, Math is absolutely anything that involves numbers in any way or form. To a toddler, the concept of numbers is (usually) beyond comprehension. To someone like Einstein, Math is still hard, although his concept of math is not of 1+1. But in a deeply philosophical and logical sense, Math will always be hard even if you do happen to be Einstein. This is due to the arbitrary property of the definition of Math: One will always define Math as what they are currently studying: For a kindergartener it will be counting; for a middle-schooler it will be Algebra; for a college student it will be Calculus; for Einstein it will be quantum mechanics and relativity theories. Anything that one is learning will be new to them; therefore it will be hard (generally). This contributes to the stereotype that Math is hard; it is likely marked ‘hard’ above other subjects because concepts in Math are usually taught at a quick pace. - Jieruei Chang

Chinese Valentine’s Day By Emily Qian 8th Grader Chinese By Emily Qian Valentine’s Day is the 8th grader seventh day of the seventh lunar month, also known as Qixi Festival, Qiqiao Festival, Double Seven, Daughter's Day or Seven Sisters' Birthday. It originated from people's worship of natural heavens. As early as ancient times, people knew about the heavenly image of the Cowherd and the Weaver Girl. In the Han Dynasty, Chinese was given the humanistic connotation of women's wisdom and skill to the Vega, which formed the custom of Qixi. Qixi Festival is a traditional cultural festival popular in China and other Chinese-speaking communities. On the Qixi Festival, women dress in needles, pray for Fu Lu Shou, worship seven sisters, and display flowers. Many of these customs affect Japan, the Korean Peninsula, Vietnam and other Chinese cultural circles. Qixi Festival is the earliest love festival in the world. It is a festival with the folklore of the Cowherd and the Weaver Girl as the carrier, the theme of love, with the woman as the main character.

JW Events Tricky Tray - On February 9th, at then end of 8th period, students were dismissed back to homeroom to receive their Tricky Trays. Tricky Tray is a fundraiser and raffle system, where students and families donate items using the tray to buy tickets to get a chance to win trays. Nearly 30 trays were donated and ranged in value from $20 to $495!
JW World Language Bake Sale. - The JW bake sale took place on Tuesday, March 5, to Thursday, March 7. Students brought in their own baked goods on Tuesday and got a homework pass in exchange. Students also drew flyers to hang around to school and were also able to receive homework passes for that as well. All money made from the event went to the Raymond Hunt Memorial Fund, which provides 3 scholarships to world language students graduating from high school - one from Spanish, one from French, and one from Mandarin.

Science Bowl - On February 22nd, The JWMS Science bowl team competed in the 2018 NJ Middle School Regional Science Bowl. Each year, the PPPL (Princeton Plasma Physics Lab) hosts the High and Middle school NJ regional science bowls, a double elimination tourney with questions asked about chemistry, biology, physics, astronomy, mathematics, and general and earth sciences. Thanks to the team’s smarts and hard work, JW won 3rd place with a narrow defeat against charter school. Competitions ran from 7:55 in the morning to 3:30 in the afternoon. Competitions were 2o minutes long.
Mardi Gras
- On March 5th, AKA Mardi Gras, not only in New Orleans, but also here at JW, the 6th graders had an awesome celebration. Kids volunteered to bring food to make “Fat Tuesday” live up to its name. To prepare for his holiday, the 6th graders learned about parades, foods, celebrations, music, and costumes.

JW Talent Show The JWMS talent show took place on February 21st. This great event starred many talented students and helped raise money. Auditions were held by Mrs. Wargo and Ms. Riley. Students had an activity period to audition, on February 19th.

Subpoenas A subpoena is when either the courts or a legislative body demands for a person or a document’s presence. This could happen in a crime, if there was a witness who refused to show, the court could subpoena them and they would be forced to come to court. A subpoena would also be used if for instance congress was conducting an investigation and to further their investigation they needed to be able to see a certain document that they did not have. Then the owner would be forced to give up that document on pain of being held in contempt of court, a punishable offense. This topic is noteworthy today because Jerry Nadler the Democrat head of the House Judiciary Committee has issued quite a few subpoenas. First he issued several subpoenas to the Attorney General, the Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Homeland Security regarding the separation of families at the border a subject on which administration officials have refused to give up their documents before. That means that this will be a major eye opener, giving us a wealth of new information regarding the policy. More recently though, he subpoenaed 81 major Trump affiliates and says more will be on the way. This newer batch has until March 18 to respond or they will be held in contempt of court. Jerry Nadler has said that this new investigation is solely to sort out any differences between the several investigations around Trump or if the Mueller investigation isn’t released, to act as a failsafe so that the information can be released no matter what Trump does. This is a major event in the Trump probes, as now a rather more partisan team of investigators is on the way, one that Trump can not stop.
Trade War Negotiations The United States and China have long been in a trade war wherein the US imposes sanctions on China and then China retaliates similarly. This trade war though, detrimental to both sides is particularly damaging to the Chinese economy, which is almost entirely based on exports, many of them to the US. As a result China rather quickly entered into trade negotiations in order to find a resolution to this conflict. And as expected America has demanded quite a bit from from its rival across the Pacific, large concessions, the cessation of IT theft amongst other things, but one of the bigger things it has thus far demanded is that if it deems China is not cooperating it is fully allowed to send another round of tariffs and China is to be disallowed to retaliate in any way. China has shot down this proposition calling it an attack on their sovereignty as a nation and apparently it has caused further tension in these negotiations but as they are due to end soon some agreement must be reached or else the Chinese economy will dip yet further especially considering their central bank no longer has the funds required to stimulate the already slowing economy. 26

Brexit/Article 50 Negotiations On June 23, 2016, the people of Britain voted to leave the European Union. And ever since it has been embroiled in heated debates as to how to do it. On the table are three principle options. The first is to leave the EU without a deal. This would mean that Britain would face steep tariffs whenever it tried to trade with EU member nations, a hard border between Ireland and Northern Ireland, whereas now you can pass between the two countries without any customs checks and several other things. Many of these things, especially the trade part, economists expect would have detrimental effects on the British economy as well as some less pronounced ones on those of EU member nations such as Germany, whose economy relies primarily on exports to countries such as Britain. The second is a deal that Theresa May, the Prime Minister of Great Britain, managed to hash out with the EU several months ago. This deal would allow for the two parties to continue trading somewhat regularly, although not with the freedom that they currently possess, it has no Irish border and it manages to remain friendly relations with the EU. This has nearly no chance of passing, the Labour party, the more liberal one, will not vote for it, but its leader Jeremy Corbyn has refused to offer an alternative although many of its members have. The Conservative Party for the most part won’t vote for it either as they say it is too soft and doesn’t do enough, so few of its members voted for it. The third option is also unlikely to happen. It is to hold a second referendum and get around parliament. The conservatives
are fanatically against
the proposal and say that it is directly undermining the
will of the people meaning
they certainly won’t vote for it. Although many of
the Labour members support
the idea, they still don’t have enough votes to
get it passed and even if they
did, their leader Jeremy Corbyn hates the
idea considering that he is
somewhat Eurosceptic himself and fears
the
politica fallout that would thencely
come.
And since he is the leader of that
party it is
very hard to
bring it to
a vote no
matter
what
the other
party
members say. With the latter two
options
probably ruled out, that leaves only the
former.
The problem is that, as it might turn out,
they can’t just continue bickering
indefinitely, in fact because of Article
fifty, an EU law they have only until
March 29. But British politicians want to
have their cake and eat it too and
so they are trying to extend this deadline
until June. If that happens as it is
likely to do then we will enter the next
phase of Brexit negotiations. They
will be more heated, more difficult and
