Rio de Janeiro, October, 2018 The First World War had ended. New airs blew across Europe and with those new gusts came a time of renewal, of innovation and of a new freedom in manners, expressions and outlook on life.

Germany and France were the main recipients of these changes, there was no going back. Women were the main beneficiaries of these changes. They talked politics, embraced sports, loosened their clothes, smoked in public, in other words, asserted their presence. The arts reflected this mood, particularly so in the decorative arts. Within this area, sculpture or statuettes as they became known, were one of the most evolved. The materials used were not new but their use, composition and subject matter were.

Sports women, femme fatales, musicians and cabaret performers, were all depicted.

Der Erste Weltkrieg war zu Ende. Ein frischer Wind wehte durch ganz Europa und brachte eine Zeit der Wiederherstellung, der Erneuerung und eine neue Freiheit in den Umgangsformen, des Ausdrucks und der gesamten Lebensauffassung mit sich.

Deutschland und Frankreich begrüßten die Veränderungen besonders, es gab kein Zurück. Vor allem die Frauen profitierten von den gesellschaftlichen Umbrüchen. Sie mischten sich in die Politik ein, stürzten sich auf sportliche Aktivitäten, lockerten ihre Kleidung, rauchten in der Öffentlichkeit, mit anderen Worten, sie behaupteten ihre Präsenz überall. Die Künste spiegelten diese Stimmung wider, insbesondere die angewandte Kunst. Skulpturen und Statuetten waren in diesem Bereich mit am progressivsten. Die verwendeten Materialien waren zwar nicht neu, ihre Verarbeitung, die Kompositionen sowie die Sujets aber sehr innovativ. Sportlerinnen, Femmes fatales, Musikerinnen und Cabaret-Tänzerinnen, alle wurden portraitiert.

‘It is exceptional….. the subject matter and the quality of each figure‘ The public wanted to bring the outdoors into their homes and nothing suited them better than to have these statuettes in new and bold poses decorate their mantelpieces and cabinets.

Artists attended to this demand. Originally sold in department stores and jewelry shops, they were intended as decorative items, wedding gifts, coming of age mementos and retirement souvenirs.

Die Klientel wollte die große Welt in ihr eigenes Zuhause bringen, wobei sich die Statuetten mit ihren neuen und schwungvollen Posen als besonders geeignet erwiesen. Sie wurden auf Kaminsimsen und in Vitrinen dekoriert.

Die Künstler bedienten dieses Interesse. Die Skulpturen wurden in den großen Kaufhäusern und in Schmuckgeschäften als Dekorationsobjekte, Hochzeitsgeschenke, zur Volljährigkeit und als Geschenk für den Ruhestand verkauft.

gon parlors to Havana nightclubs, from Paris couture shops to London trendy abodes. The statuettes were here to stay and became an unmistakable element of what would become the Art Deco movement.

With the advent of the Second World War, these statuettes were all but forgotten, put away in attics and out of sight.

It was in the 1960’s that they were slowly being rediscovered. Some foresaw their beauty and uniqueness and began to acquire them; soon they began to appear in the homes of the well to do and famous, eventually in exhibitions and museums. They became collectable. With the passage of time some models were so rare and so desirable that prices soared.

It is highly unusual to encounter a selection of sculptures as the one being offered here of The Marie and David Cooper Collection. It is exceptional in the number of statuettes, the subject matter and the quality of each figure.

From one collection to be dispersed and treasured by other collectors. These figures reflect another era, marked by their very own special circumstances.

These sculptures are true ambassadors of the Art Deco period.

Schnell verbreiteten sie sich in der ganzen Welt, in den Salons von Saigon und in den Nachtclubs in Havanna, man sah sie in den Pariser Mode-Geschäften genauso wie in Londons elegantesten Residenzen.

Die Statuetten etablierten sich als ein unverkennbares Element der Art-Déco-Bewegung. Mit Beginn des Zweiten Weltkrieges waren die Statuetten fast vergessen, sie wurden weggeräumt und auf Dachböden verstaut.

In den 1960er Jahren begann man die Skulpturen langsam wieder zu entdecken. Einige erkannten mit scharfem Auge ihre Schönheit und Einzigartigkeit und begannen, sie zu kaufen. Bald erschienen die Figuren in den Häusern von wohlhabenden und berühmten Menschen und schließlich auch in Ausstellungen und Museen. Sie avancierten zu Sammlerstücken.

Mit der Zeit wurden einige Modelle derart selten und begehrt, dass die Preise stiegen.

Man trifft höchst selten auf eine Skulpturen-Sammlung wie die von Marie und David Cooper, die hier angeboten wird. Die Kollektion ist einzigartig im Hinblick auf die schiere Anzahl der Stücke, die Auswahl der Sujets und auch die Qualität jeder einzelnen Figur.

Die Skulpturen, die von Sammlern sehr geschätzt werden, spiegeln eine vergangene Ära wider und haben alle ihre eigene, ganz besondere Geschichte.

Die Skulpturen sind wahre Botschafter des Art Déco.

Preiss & Kassler at the Leipzig Sample Fair

Preiss & Kassler auf der Leipziger Mustermesse

Before World War I only one fair of international reputation existed in the world. This was the Leipzig sample fair, which took place twice a year, in spring and autumn. Its location, at the heart of Europe, was one of the prime factors of its importance…Thus the first ‚Samples‘ fair was held in 1895 in Leipzig.

Viewing these samples, buyers placed their orders and received the goods directly from the factories thus the name Leipzig Mustermesse, or Sample Fair.

The fair consisted of fifty-seven exhibition buildings covering an exhibition area of 3,700,000 sq.ft.

The number of exhibitors during Preiss’ time was enormous - 10,000 in the 1920s. The number of buyers continually grew as well…Buyers came from all over Europe, but also from as far away as America, China, Japan and Australia.

This proved to be a most important venue for their financial success and they took part in it uninterrupted from 1929 until 1941.

Messe von internationalem Rang. Das war die Leipziger Mustermesse, die zwei Mal im Jahr, im Frühling und im Herbst, stattfand. Die Lage der Messe im Herzen von Europa spielte für die Bedeutung der Messe eine entscheidende Rolle…

Die erste Mustermesse fand 1895 in Leipzig statt.

Die Käufer bestellten nach der Begutachtung der ausgestellten Modelle ihre Ware direkt bei den Herstellern - daher leitete sich der Name Mustermesse oder Modell-Messe ab. Die Messe bestand aus 57 Ausstellungsgebäuden, die eine Fläche von 343,730 Quadratmeter einnahmen. Die Zahl der Aussteller zur Zeit von Preiss war enorm 10.000 in den 1920er Jahren. Die Zahl der Käufer stieg auch kontinuierlich…Die Käufer kamen aus ganz Europa, aber auch aus Amerika, China, Japan und Australien.

Auf der Leipziger Messe stellten Preiss & Kassler in der Kategorie ‚Kunst‘ und ‚Kunstgewerbe‘ aus.

Für ihren wirtschaftlichen Erfolg war diese Messe entscheidend, so dass sie von 1929 bis 1941 in ununterbrochener Folge daran teilnahmen.

Was sammeln Sie?

I collect quality! It does not matter what they are.

Except the quality is good. My interests range from books to photographs, clocks, cars and sculpture, amongst others.

Ich sammle Qualität - es spielt dabei keine Rolle, um welche Objekte es sich handelt! Die Qualität muss stimmen. Meine Interessengebiete erstrecken sich von Büchern über Fotografie bis hin zu Uhren, Autos, Skulpturen und vieles mehr.

What made you want to accumulate and assemble these extensive collections?

Welche Motivation steckt hinter dieser Sammelleidenschaft?

I am very fortunate. I have been practicing law for 52 years. I have been highly successful. Some of my collecting is an add-on to the success. I have had the funds to be able to assemble such collections. Which is a privilege. I also like being surrounded by beautiful things!

Ich habe großes Glück gehabt. Nach 52 sehr erfolgreichen Jahren als Anwalt ist das Sammeln von Kunst die Krönung meines beruflichen Erfolgs. Ich sehe es als großes Privileg an, über die finanziellen Mittel zu verfügen. Außerdem mag ich es einfach von schönen Dingen umgeben zu sein.

How did your love for sculpture begin?

Wie ist Ihre Liebe zur Skulptur entstanden?

Undoubtedly, by visiting the museums in Paris, where we would often go for the weekend. In particular Musée d’Orsay. Their sculptures from the 19th and 20th centuries were the best in our opinion. We also loved visiting Venice and Florence. The museums helped cultivate our eye.

Ganz bestimmt durch den Besuch der Pariser Museen, wo wir häufig die Wochenenden verbrachten. Ganz besonders das Musée d’Orsay. Die Skulpturen dort sind meiner Meinung nach die besten des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts. Wir sind auch gerne nach Florenz und Venedig gefahren. Die Museumsbesuche haben geholfen, das Auge zu schulen.

Did you have a criteria when acquiring a sculpture for the Art Deco collection?

Hatten Sie ein Kriterium bei der Auswahl der

Yes, condition, condition and condition! Quality and rarity was a requirement. It remains the same throughout my interests. The price was secondary, just as long as the example was the best that it could be. I remember the sky-high prices of these pieces when the Russian collectors where amassing their collections. If I cannot afford the best in one category, then I buy the best in another category.

For example, I cannot afford to buy the best in French Impressionist paintings, so I do not buy them!

Ja, Erhaltungszustand, Erhaltungszustand und noch einmal Erhaltungszustand. Qualität und Seltenheit waren natürlich eine Grundvoraussetzung. Danach bin ich bei allen Sammlungen vorgegangen. Solange das Stück das beste war, was man finden konnte, war der Preis Nebensache. Ich erinnere mich allerdings noch gut an die Zeit, als die russischen Sammler Ihre Sammlungen aufbauten. Wenn es für mich nicht möglich ist, das Beste in einer Kategorie zu kaufen, wende ich mich eben einer anderen Kategorie zu.

Zum Beispiel, kann ich mir Gemälde von den großen französischen Impressionisten nicht leisten, also kaufe ich sie auch nicht.

Which were the first examples that formed your Art Deco collection?

Our very first sculpture was bought for me by my wife, Marie in 1989. It was made by Antoine-Louis Barye. I think that same year, I purchased the bronze ‘Russian Dancer’ by Paul Philippe (lot 29) and ‘Diana’

by Bruno Zach (lot 37).

Was sind Ihre ersten Ankäufe dieser Sammlung gewesen?

Unsere erste Skulptur hat meine Frau Marie 1989 für mich erworben. Und zwar war das eine Arbeit von Antoine-Louis Barye. Es war kurz danach, als ich dann die Figur ‚Russian Dancer‘ von Paul Philippe (Kat.-Nr. 29) sowie die ‚Diana‘ von Bruno Zach (Kat.-Nr. 37) kaufte.

’This is the best example I have ever seen’ What is your favourite sculpture in your Art Deco collection?

Welche ist Ihre Lieblingsskulptur in der Art DécoSammlung?

The ‘Flame Leaper’ by Ferdinand Preiss. I had been offered this model before. But the condition was not up to scratch. This is the best example I have ever seen and I love everything about what this sculpture encompasses. It is an icon. It says everything about the period. The Tennis Players come a close second!

Die Flammentänzerin von Ferdinand Preiss. Mir wurde die Skulptur schon öfter angeboten, aber der Zustand war nie so gut. Dies ist das beste Exemplar, das ich je gesehen habe and ich liebe alles, was diese Figur verkörpert. Sie ist eine Ikone. Sie sagt alles aus, was diese Epoche hergibt. Die Tennisspieler sind auf Platz zwei.

I can see that your collection is quite focused on the work of Ferdinand Preiss; what in particular drew you to his work?

I liked the scope and depth in what was made by Ferdinand Preiss. The various books on the subject, highlight what was actually produced, so collecting becomes very tempting! Once again, the quality of his work is, in my opinion - the best.

Mir gefiel die Bandbreite und Tiefgründigkeit der Arbeiten von Ferdinand Preiss. Dadurch, dass es zahlreiche Publikationen zu ihm gibt, wird das Sammeln sehr erleichtert. Und noch einmal, die Qualität seiner Objekte ist meiner Meinung nach unübertroffen.

The figurine was exhibited at the Leipziger Messe in 1930. The ‘Flame Leaper’ and the ‘Torch Dancer’ (lot 11) are the epitome of the Art Deco sculpture.

The elegance of the movement and the finesse of carving of both sculptures make them outright masterpieces of the epoch. The dancers’ shoulderlength hair looks like licking flames itself.

Die Figur wurde 1930 auf der Leipziger Messe ausgestellt. Sowohl ‚Flammentänzerin‘ als auch ‚Fackeltänzerin (Kat.-Nr. 11) bilden in der Konsequenz ihrer Darstellung zwei der kühnsten Bravourstücke der Art Déco-Plastik überhaupt. Sowohl durch die Eleganz der Bewegung als auch die Feinheit der Schnitzerei zeigen die Figuren eine selten erreichte Meisterschaft.

Die halblangen Haare der Tänzerinnen sind in ihrer Gestaltung selbst kleine züngelnde Flammen die links und rechts von den lodernden Fackeln begleitet werden.

Ferdinand Preiss (1892-1943)

The famous Art Deco ivory sculptor was born in 1892 as one of six children in Erbach in Odenwald.

His father Karl Daniel Heinrich Preiss owned and ran a hotel and his mother Katharina, née Reichert, came from an ivory carver family. Ferdinand Preiss was fifteen when both of his parents died within a short time span. The boy was taken in by the family of his maternal aunt, who was married to the Erbach ivory carver Philip Willmann (1846 - 1910). Under Willmann’s direction, Preiss began his apprenticeship and created small ivory figures which were based on ancient Greek and Roman models. From 1901 on, Preiss set out to further develop his skills in other places and institutions. At the Royal School of Art in Berlin he worked with Michael Kern. This was followed by a trip to Italy, where he worked for the Ghidini company in Milan, and a stay in Paris.

In 1905, Ferdinand Preiss joined the Karl Haebler company in Baden-Baden. There, he met Arthur Kassler, with whom he then founded “Preiss & Kassler Geschaeft fuer Elfenbeinkunst mit Werkstatt”, a company and workshop for ivory art, in Berlin in 1907. Kassler was responsible for the finances while Preiss took over the artistic direction. Their goal was to stand out against their competitors by offering artistic designs and higher product quality. Preiss & Kassler became well-known because they specialised on chryselephantine figurines. Via Robert Kionsek, they also made connections to the bronze foundry Gladenbeck.

Der berühmte Elfenbeinkünstler des Art Déco wurde 1892 als eines von sechs Kindern in Erbach im Odenwald geboren. Der Vater Karl Daniel Heinrich Preiss führte dort ein Hotel, seine Mutter Katharina, geb. Reichert, stammte aus einer Elfenbeinschnitzerfamilie. Ferdinand Preiss war fünfzehn Jahre alt, als beide Elternteile kurz nacheinander verstarben.

Der Junge wurde von der Familie seiner Tante mütterlicherseits aufgenommen, die mit dem Erbacher Elfenbeinschnitzer Philip Willmann (1846 1910) verheiratet war. Unter der Ägide von Willmann begann Preiss mit seiner Ausbildung und fertigte kleine Elfenbeinfiguren nach antiken griechischen und römischen Vorbildern an. Ab 1901 machte sich Preiss auf den Weg, seine Fertigkeiten an anderen Orten und Institutionen zu vertiefen. An der Unterrichtsanstalt des Kunstgewerbemuseums in Berlin arbeitete er mit Michael Kern zusammen. Es folgten eine Reise nach Italien, wo er in Mailand für die Firma Ghidini tätig wurde sowie ein Aufenthalt in Paris.

1905 trat Ferdinand Preiss in die Firma Karl Haebler in Baden-Baden ein. Dort lernte er Arthur Kassler kennen, mit dem er 1907 in Berlin die Firma ‚Preiss & Kassler, Geschäft für Elfenbeinkunst mit Werkstatt’ gründete. Kassler kümmerte sich um die Finanzen, Preiss übernahm die künstlerische Leitung. Das Ziel war es, sich von der Konkurrenz durch künstlerische Entwürfe und eine bessere Qualität abzuheben. Mit der Spezialisierung auf chryselephantine Figuren wurden Preiss & Kassler bekannt. Über Robert Kionsek knüpften sie Beziehungen zur Bronzegießerei Gladenbeck.

The first figurines to come out of the workshop were modelled after Greek goddesses. The rise of the company, however, was interrupted by the First World War, in which Ferdinand Preiss served in the sanitary corps. In Poland and Russia, he created landscape drawings which were then printed as postcards and bought by the soldiers on the eastern front to be sent home. This business idea, born out of necessity, made enough money to earn a living for his wife Margaretha, née Hilme, and his children Harry and Lucie during the war.

In 1919, Preiss & Kassler re-opened their business and continued to produce ivory figurines. In the years after the war, the company focused on smaller pieces of ivory jewellery such as brooches and pendants. The golden twenties, however, had a very positive effect on the success of the company and they started to focus on sculpture pieces again.

The inspiration this time was no longer provided by ancient Greek or Roman models, but by images of modern women instead. The chryselephantine figurines were particularly well received on the American market. This is why, from then on, the two company founders signed their names with ‘ss’ and not with an ‘ß’. In order to avoid the high export duties for ivory, they opened a workshop in England. In addition, Arthur Kassler’s son Hans frequented trade fairs and successfully marketed the multi-facetted range of sculptures. The most important trading location at the time was the Leipzig Sample Fair (in which the company participated from 1929 to 1941). Here, orders were commissioned by representatives from all over the world.

Unterbrochen wurde der Aufstieg der Firma durch den Ersten Weltkrieg, in dem Ferdinand Preiss seinen Dienst als Sanitäter absolvierte. In Polen und Russland fertigte er Landschaftszeichnungen an, die als Postkarten gedruckt wurden und von den Soldaten an der Ostfront gekauft und nach Hause verschickt wurden. Diese aus der Not geborene Geschäftsidee sicherte seiner Frau Margaretha, geborene Hilme und seinen Kindern Harry und Lucie während der Kriegsjahre ein Auskommen.

1919 wurde das Geschäft für Elfenbeinfiguren wieder eröffnet. In den ersten Jahren nach dem Krieg konzentrierte sich die Firma auf kleinere Schmuckstücke aus Elfenbein wie Broschen und Anhänger. Die goldenen Zwanziger wirkten sich hingegen äußerst positiv auf das Geschäft aus. In den Fokus rückten wieder Skulpturen und Statuetten. Die Inspiration lieferten nun nicht länger antike Modelle, sondern die moderne Frau. Besonderen Anklang fanden die chryselephantinen Figuren auf dem amerikanischen Markt. Ihre Familiennamen schrieben die beiden Firmengründer daher von nun an mit ‚ss‘, nicht mehr ‚ß‘. Um hohe Ausfuhrzölle für Elfenbein zu umgehen, eröffneten sie zudem eine Werkstatt in England. Außerdem vermarktete Arthur Kasslers Sohn Hans das facettenreiche Skulpturen-Sortiment höchst erfolgreich auf Messen. Der wichtigste Handelsplatz war die Mustermesse in Leipzig (Teilnahme 1929 1941). Hier wurden Bestellungen von Vertretern aus der ganzen Welt gesammelt.

In 1931, the company moved to Berlin Ritterstrasse where many department stores were located. Preiss and Kassler signed their works with the initials P and K, surrounded by a circle. Always keen on technical improvements, Preiss expanded their workshop’s conventional tools with the addition of a dental drill that had greater rotational force and thus achieved more precise effects. The bronze work was carried out externally, usually in the Berlin foundry Gladenbeck (until 1936). The post-processing of the castings required twice as much time as the casting itself.

What required special expertise was assembling the sculptures’ ivory and bronze parts on their plinths.

Preiss & Kassler showcased their sculptures in department stores like Wertheim and Hertie, but they were also distributed in Brazil and Argentina. From 1920 on, the most important market, however, proved to be the United Kingdom. The figures ‘Queen Elizabeth II. as Princess’, ‘Saint George and the Dragon’, as well as multiple dancers in elegant and extravagant poses, were especially created for British customers.

The golden twenties influenced Ferdinand Preiss in manifold ways: he was inspired by Berlin’s rich cultural environment, by the colourful nightlife with its dance revues, but also by pictures from international magazines. At the time, the atmosphere in Berlin was exceedingly permissive and the city was the place to be when it came to entertainment – with 400 opera seats, 11.000 seats in the theatres and another

Preiss & Kassler präsentierten die Figuren in Kaufhäusern wie Wertheim und Hertie, sie wurden aber auch in Brasilien und Argentinien vertrieben. Der wichtigste Markt war ab 1920 Großbritannien. Für britische Kunden entstanden die Modelle ‚Queen Elizabeth II. als Prinzessin‘, ‚der heilige Georg und der Drache‘ sowie Tänzerinnen in eleganten und extravaganten Posen.

In den 1920er Jahren wirkten diverse Einflüsse auf Ferdinand Preiss, allen voran das reiche kulturelle Leben von Berlin und das bunte Nachtleben mit seinen Tanzrevues, aber auch Fotografien aus internationalen Magazinen. Die Atmosphäre in Berlin war überaus freizügig, die Stadt war, so Alberto Shayo in seiner Monographie zu Ferdinand Preiss, der ‚Place to be‘, wenn es um das nächtliche Vergnügen ging mit 400 Plätzen in der Oper, 11.000 in den Theatern und noch einmal 45.000 in Varietés und Cabarets.

Ada May, Georgia Graves and Niddy Impekoven inspired famous and sought-after figurines such as ‘Lighter Than Air’, ‘Balancing’, ‘Bat Dancer’, or the acclaimed ‘Flame Dancer’. The ivory sculpture ‘Youth’, which was designed before 1914, marks a turning point in Preiss’ artistic development. It represents the ideal of a new woman – slim, sporty, self-confident. Her undressed appearance does not refer to a model from antiquity, as was the norm prior, but instead to a modern woman.

Sports and the cult of the body also played an increasingly important role in the 1920s. This explains why the sculptures from the Olympia series were particularly popular in the 1930s. Another source of inspiration for Preiss’ artistic designs were the movies of the time: Preiss’ ‘Carmen’ figure was most probably created under the influence of the 1918 film by Ernst Lubitsch.

In a comprehensive publication on Ferdinand Preiss, published in 2005, Alberto Shayo has also explored the question of how the artist acted during the period of National Socialism in Germany. In 1938, he provided the required so-called ‘Ahnenpass’. But he was neither a party member nor a NS-sympathiser.

During the war, the local business remained open but all export came to a standstill. In 1940, the casting of bronze was prohibited. Ferdinand Preiss died on July 29, 1943.

Ihre unbekleidete Erscheinung bezieht sich nicht wie zuvor auf ein Vorbild aus der Antike, sondern auf die Frau der Zwanziger Jahre.

Körperkult und Sport spielten in den 1920er Jahren ebenfalls eine immer größere Rolle. So waren die Skulpturen aus der Olympia-Serie in den 1930er Jahren besonders beliebt. Auch Kinofilme lieferten zündende Ideen für künstlerische Entwürfe. Die ‚Carmen’-Figur schuf Ferdinand Preiss wohl unter dem Eindruck des 1918 erschienen Films von Ernst Lubitsch.

Alberto Shayo ist in einer umfassenden Publikation von 2005 auch der Frage nachgegangen, wie der Künstler sich in der Zeit des Nationalsozialismus verhielt. 1938 erbrachte Preiss den erforderlichen ‚Ahnenpass’. Er war kein Parteimitglied und auch kein Sympathisant. Während des Krieges blieb das Geschäft geöffnet, das Exportgeschäft kam jedoch zum Erliegen. 1940 wurde das Gießen von Bronze untersagt. Am 29. Juli 1943 verstarb Ferdinand Preiss.

Chiparus captured the hedonistic essence of the Roaring Twenties in his chryselephantine sculptures and statuettes. The female figures seem to be fully aware of their beauty and flaunt their body in theatrical poses, often with outstretched arms.

Chiparus found his inspiration mostly in the ballet and theater world but also in fashion magazines. Like no other sculptor of his time, he managed to depict the extravagant costumes of the stage world in depth.

Demètre Chiparus descended from a family of well-to-do land owners in Dohoroi/Romania.

Financially secure, he travelled to Italy in 1909 and started his artistic formation with Raffaello Romanelli in Florence. In 1912 he went to Paris. There, he studied under Antonin Mercié and Jean-Marie Boucher at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux Arts.

He debuted with some of his works at the Salon de Société des Artistes in 1914. Then, in 1918, he opened his own studio at rue Barrault 24 in the 13e arrondissement. In 1924 he met Julienne Lullier, his longtime partner, whom he married in 1939.

Chiparus modelled his designs for chryselephantine and bronze sculptures out of Plasteline, an oily modelling clay, as depicted in numerous historical photographs. After his first draft, a modeller created a prototype that Chiparus himself would rework it meticulously until it met his aesthetic demands.

The bronze parts of the figurines were reworked with great care, painted and patined. In a final step, the base was selected, either of marble or of onyx.

Many of his costume designs come off as oriental.

Moreover, Chiparus found stimulation in the stage celebrities of his time, like the Dolly Sisters, Isadora Duncan and the dancers of the Ballets Russes. The discovery of Tutankhamen’s tomb in Egypt in 1922 lead to a series of figurines of Cleopatra and Egyptian dancers.

Demètre Chiparus remained successful until the 1940s. He passed away in 1947 after a stroke.

Alexandre Kéléty (gest. 1940)

The Hungarian-born sculptor Alexandre Kéléty is famous for his animal sculptures and bronze figurines of children. His birth date remains a mystery. It is known, though, that, from 1918 until his death in 1940, the artist worked in several fields and that his wife, Hélène Grün, came from an artist family.

Kéléty began his formation in Toulouse under the Hungarian painter Imre Simay right after the end of the First World War. After that, he studied in Paris.

His children sculptures captivate with their naturalistic child-like faces, dreaming, grave, deep into thought, or pouting.

His take on the female figure is different from the works of his contemporaries, like Chiparus or Preiss.

Kéléty stylised the female silhouette into something abstract and naïve. The clothing is not skin-tight, it creates shapes of its own, reminding of geometric figures, like, for example, the pantaloons of his ‘Hearts’ sculpture.

Between the two world wars, Kéléty took part in several of the Paris Salons: In 1927, 1928 and in 1930 in the Salon de Société des Artistes Français his chryselephantine figurines were manufactured by the Arthur Goldscheider firm.

At the Exposition internationale des Arts Décoratifs et industriels modernes in 1925, his figurines featured at both the stands of Goldscheider and Edmond Etling.

Der aus Ungarn stammende Bildhauer Alexandre Kéléty ist vor allem für seine Tierskulpturen und Kinderfiguren aus Bronze bekannt. Sein Geburtsdatum ist nicht überliefert. Von 1918 bis zu seinem Tod im Jahr 1940 war er als Künstler in diversen Disziplinen tätig. Er war mit der aus einer Künstlerfamilie stammenden Hélène Grün verheiratet.

Kéléty begann seine künstlerische Ausbildung nach dem Ende des Ersten Weltkrieges in Toulouse bei dem ungarischen Maler Imre Simay. Später studierte er in Paris. Seine Kinderfiguren bestechen durch eine sehr natürliche Wiedergabe der kindlichen Gesichter, die verträumt, ernst in sich versunken oder schmollend erscheinen.

Die Auffassung der weiblichen Figuren unterscheidet sich von der seiner zeitgenössischen Künstlerkollegen wie Chiparus oder Preiss. Kéléty stilisierte die weibliche Silhouette ins Abstrakte und Naive. Die Kleider liegen nicht etwa eng am Körper, sondern bilden eigene Formen, die sich bisweilen geometrischen Figuren annähern wie bei der Pluderhose seiner Skulptur ‚Hearts‘.

Zwischen den beiden Weltkriegen stellte er mehrfach auf den Pariser Salons aus: 1927, 1928 und 1930 auf dem Salon der Société des Artistes Français - seine chryselephantinen Skulpturen wurden von der Firma Arthur Goldscheider ausgeführt.

Auf der Exposition internationale des Arts Décoratifs et industriels modernes 1925 wurden seine Arbeiten sowohl auf dem Stand von Goldscheider als auch bei Edmond Etling gezeigt.

Roland Paris (1894 – 1945)

The Vienna-born artist developed a very unique

visual language, which distinguished him from his fellow artists, who strived for idealized beauty.

Roland Paris was a brilliant illustrator and made a name for himself through caricatures and cartoons as well as caricaturistic exaggerated sculptures.

Works by George Grosz and Otto Dix served him as inspiration for his grotesque figures and physiognomies.

He began his artistic education at the Weimar SaxonGrand Ducal Art School (Großherzoglich-Sächsische Kunstschule Weimar) where he trained with the sculptor Gottlieb Elster. He continued his studies in Munich and Weimar until he was drafted into military service during the First World War in 1915. He moved to Berlin in 1919. 1924 he married the dancer Elisabeth Austen, who posed for many of his female figures.

In his atelier in the Xantener Straße 11 in Berlin he created drawings, paintings, graphics, posters, postcards and designs for sculptures, which were manufactured by the caster Ernst Kraas. Paris founded his own publishing firm, at which he published his woodcuts, etchings and lithographs.

During the 1930s his success diminished. His works did not fit the concept of the National Socialist’s artistic perception. In 1942 Roland Paris had to close down his publishing firm, in 1943 he was drafted into military service for the Second World War. He fell in an air raid of Swinemünde in 1945 at the end of the war.

Paris gründete seinen eigenen Verlag, in dem er seine Holzschnittreihen, Radierungen und Lithographien herausbrachte.

Im Verlauf der 1930er Jahre nahm der Erfolg ab, seine Werke passten nicht in das Schema nationalsozialistischer Kunstvorstellungen. 1942 musste Roland Paris seinen Verlag auflösen, 1943 wurde er zum Wehrdienst im Zweiten Weltkrieg berufen.

Kurz vor Kriegsende 1945 fiel er einem Luftangriff in Swinemünde zum Opfer.

Paul Philippe (1870-1930)

Despite the extensive oeuvre attributed to the sculptor Paul Philippe, large parts of his life remain in the shadows. According to Alberto Shayo, he studied at the Royal Art Academy in Berlin. At the fin de siècle, he went to Paris, his residency in the rue Tourlaque in Montmartre can be verified. He continued his studies at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts under Antonin Larroux and took part in the annual exhibitions of the Salons on a regular basis.

He specialized in chryselephantine figurines and bronzes, which were manufactured by F Goldscheider, Rosenthal & Maeder and Les Neveux de J. Lehmann.

‘Le reveil’ (Awakening) is among his most famous figurines. As a result of its popularity this design was manufactured in various different materials and sizes.

He completed his formation as a shape and model caster and porcelain modeller at the Porcelain factory of A.W.Fr. Kister in his hometown of Scheibe and thus followed in his father’s footsteps who had worked as a designer at Kister’s as well. From 1893-1896, Otto Poertzel expanded his knowledge in porcelain working by studying under Reinhard Möller at the industrial school in Sonneberg.

In seinem Geburtsort Scheibe absolvierte er eine Lehre in der dortigen Porzellanfabrik A.W.Fr. Kister als Form- und Modellgießer und Porzellanmodelleur.

Damit stieg er in die Fußstapfen seines Vaters G. Wilhelm Poertzel, der bei Kister als Entwerfer tätig war. Von 1893 bis 1896 vertiefte Otto Poertzel seine Kenntnisse im Bereich Porzellan an der Industrieschule in Sonneberg bei Reinhard Möller.

In 1900, he maintained his own studio in Coburg and received public contracts from both the state and the city. For example, he realised the bust for the Alexandrinen fountain in Coburg. In 1908, he worked in Munich and studied under Erwin Kurz, a former pupil of Hildebrandt, at the Academy. After marrying Henny Breyding, he settled back in Coburg, where he had his own mansion and studio built at Hügelstrasse.

He received international acclaim at major exhibitions, like the World Fair in Saint Louis in 1904 and the International Art Exhibition in Brussels, 1910.

Nach seiner Heirat mit Henny Breyding ließ er sich in Coburg nieder, wo er sich eine Villa mit Atelier in der Hügelstraße erbauen ließ. Teilnahmen an Großausstellungen machten den Bildhauer auch international populär – etwa die Weltausstellung St. Louis 1904 und die Internationale Kunstausstellung in Brüssel 1910.

His designs were executed at Rosenthal & Maeder and Preiss & Kassler. Like other protagonists of the Art Deco era, he found his inspiration mostly in ballet (Snake Dancer), sophisticated women (Aristocrat) or theater stages (Columbine and Harlequin). His figurines’ proportions, however, seem to be rooted more in the mannerism period. Moreover, Poertzel created naturalistic animal bronzes, for example a pair of pheasants, or exotic animals like lions and fighting bison.

As he had received an honorary professorship, most of his pieces bear the ‘Prof. Poertzel’ signature.

Zudem schuf Otto Poertzel naturalistische Tierbronzen, darunter Fasanenpaare, aber auch exotische Tiere wie Löwen und kämpfende Bisons.

Aufgrund seines Titels als Honorarprofessor tragen die meisten seiner Stücke die ‚Prof. Poertzel‘ Signatur.
