SSSSA Track & Field A1 Grade – Trinity College Girls, Boys & Combined Seventeen State Representatives across numerous disciplines.
The highlights for 2017, were winning all three titles at the SSSSA Track & Field A1 Grade Championships for the first time since 2005, two SSSSA Cross Country Team Titles and one SA Orienteering Team Title. The Athletics Team can also boast three National Title holders and seventeen State Representatives across numerous disciplines and eleven Individual State Title holders. However, it is the depth of the Athletics Team that has assisted its success with over 300 students representing the College and/or attending regular training sessions. The expertise of coaches; Malcolm Bennett, Will Houtman, Sean Carlin, Craig Loveday, Adrian Pounsett, Jess Coppins, Cam Rudge and Richard Bednall have assisted the athletes in developing their skills. The input of Senior athletes especially during the warmups has also been appreciated. At the Celebration of Athletics 2017, Kendra Pring was presented the “Richard Bednall Award” in recognition of her commitment and dedication to Athletics at Trinity College. Kendra has been an integral member of the Athletics Team for a number of years and has overcome numerous injures to represent Trinity at all Intercollege Track & Field Competitions in 2017, even the predominately boys’ competition – the Achilles Cup in the Pole Vault. She has put the team before personal results often competing in the maximum number of events to ensure Trinity has a competitor in every event. She will compete in the National Knockout Championships with the Senior Girls Team for the second successive year in December. In 2017, she was Girls Athletics Captain and she demonstrated an excellent example to all athletes. Athlete of the Year
Lauren Smith (Year 8) was recognised for her performances during 2017 in numerous Track & Field Championships both for Trinity College, AthleticsSA and SALAA. At the SSSSA Track & Field A1 Grade Championships she achieved 3 SSSSA Standards in the U14 and U15 age groups and won two U15 events and was placed 2nd in U14 age group. She is still eligible for the U14 age group in 2018. She has participated in all 2017 Track & Field competitions for Trinity College - SSSSA A1 Grade, Knockout (Junior Girls), CoEd (Wildman) Cup and Achilles Cup. She set two new U13 records at CoEd (Wildman) Cup in U13 Shot Put and U13 Discus and holds numerous South School and College Records in the throws events. At the Athletics Australia National Junior Championships, she set a new Meet Record in winning Gold in the U14 Hammer Throw. At the AthleticsSA State Titles, she won 1 Gold, 3 Silver and 2 Bronze across the four throws and three age groups and she holds the AthleticsSA State Record for U14 3kg Hammer. She also represented SALAA at the National Titles in Sydney after winning 2 Gold medals at the SALAA Sate Titles. At the recent SA AllSchools State Titles she won the U14 Hammer with a new meet record and will represent SA in the National AllSchools Championships in Adelaide in December. At the AthleticsSA Presentations she was named the U14 Track & Field Female Athlete of the Year and awarded the ‘Jackman Throws Trophy for Best Performance by a Junior Woman’. Lauren was also recognised with a monthly award in the SA School Sports Awards.

Three State Titles, a Meet Record and Six Athletes in SA State Team after 2017 SA AllSchools Track & Field Games
Lauren Smith (Yr8), Arielle Abbate (Yr11) and Kuei Kuei (Yr11) each won a State Title and automatic State selection to lead the performances by the 20 athletes who competed in the SA AllSchools Games for Trinity College. Lauren continued her success with the Hammer with a new meet record, breaking her 2016 record by 2.49m. Arielle showed her dominance over the field in 100m Hurdles to record a national qualifier. Kuei surprised all athletes in the U18 100m final when he won from lane 9, after being taught how to use starting blocks correctly between the heats and final.
Others to compete with success were Isobella Nitschke (Yr7), Alanah Gregory (Yr7) and Jay Goode (Yr11) with silver medals which means automatic selection in the SA Team. Casey Cammans (Yr11) and Kyle Waters (Yr10) won bronze medals and are also likely to be named in the SA Team.
Numerous athletes competed for the first time in this competition, which also serves as selection trials for the SA Team for the National AllSchools Championships in December in Adelaide. It is hoped that athletes will continue to compete for local clubs over the summer months to make further improvements.
