AN AIRPORT THAT CONNECTS QUITO AND ECUADOR TO DEVELOPMENT Close to the fifth anniversary of commencement of operations, the economic and social benefits of the new Quito International Airport have become evident. However, the actual impact on the neighboring communities, the city of Quito and Ecuador had not been determined so far.

New jobs created in Quito and the country, a contribution to the Gross Domestic Product, improved connectivity, greater cargo capacity that promotes exports, enhanced infrastructure and increased revenues in the tourism industry, and a higher standard of living for the population of the nearby communities are some of the elements analyzed in the 2016 Economic Impact Study for the Quito International Airport (QIA) conducted by Econรณmica - Centro de Investigaciรณn Cuantitativa in September 2017 and presented here by Corporaciรณn Quiport, the airport concessionaire, to account for the importance of planning and investment focused on people, society and the environment.

CONNECTIVITY: BRINGING PEOPLE CLOSER TO THE WORLD A large network of destinations, greater seat availability, and new airlines have turned the Quito Airport into a driver of productive, tourist and social development in the capital city and the country.

MORE PASSENGERS TRAVELING TO A GROWING DESTINATION Increased connectivity brings about a growing number of passengers transiting through the QIA every year. The new non-stop flight offerings have enabled Ecuadorians to reach any destination around the world and foreign travelers to reach Quito and Ecuador faster and more efficiently.

• The average number of passengers departing from the QIA in 2006-2012 was 2.37 million per year, while the annual average of departing passengers in 2013-2016 grew to 2.64 million.

TOURISM: AN “ECOSYSTEM” OF HIGH-QUALITY SERVICES For Corporación Quiport and the QIA, tourism is enhanced by highquality transportation services. That is why we are a fundamental part of a tourist “ecosystem” that gives dynamism to one of the fastest-growing destinations in the region by contributing significantly to the country’s revenues from this industry.

A SIGNIFICANT SOURCE OF INCOME

• Total national expenditure of tourists who entered Ecuador through the QIA was USD 817 million in 2016.

• In Quito, total expenditure of tourists visiting the city who arrived through the QIA was USD 290 million.

• Non-resident tourists’ expenditure has a positive effect on Quito’s and Ecuador’s economy as it creates jobs and generates income for the community.

CARGO: WE TRANSPORT NOT ONLY GOODS, BUT PROJECTS At the QIA we strive to contribute to the improvement of conditions for international trade in Quito and Ecuador. A more dynamic economy and more business opportunities are some of the results of the increased cargo capacity.

INCREASED CAPACITY FOR EXPORTS

• On average, 124.05 thousand metric tons of cargo were transported every year in 20062012 through the old airport, while the annual average in the new Quito International Airport was 151.90 thousand metric tons, an increase of 22.45%.

• The cargo area of 15,198 m² in the old airport now covers 45,000 m². This has resulted in an increase in transportation capacity from 150 thousand metric tons to 250 thousand metric tons per year.

JOB CREATION: AN ENGINE THAT SPREADS WINGS The value of infrastructure is measured in terms of the benefits brought to the community and the surrounding areas. The thousands of direct, indirect and induced jobs created in 2016 are an important part of the impact of the Quito International Airport.

• Six out of every 1,000 people in the country and five out of every 100 people in Quito are engaged in activities relating to the Quito airport.

• 19.32% of direct jobs are held by people living in the areas surrounding the QIA. • The average salary at the airport is 97% higher than the national average and 46% higher than the average in Quito.

THE SURROUNDING COMMUNITIES ARE MAJOR BENEFICIARIES An airport has a positive impact on its surrounding communities. The Mariscal Sucre Airport is eager to improve the standard of living of these communities. The airport operations resulted in the construction of new roads and the improvement of the existing ones, greater access to goods and services which expedites activities in the communities, and the creation of new businesses.

ENHANCED SERVICES AND BETTER ACCESS TO ROADS • Two new first-rate roads covering a distance of 24.6 km connect the QIA area to the city of Quito.

• Land use shifted from predominantly agricultural purposes to residential, industrial and multipurpose uses.

• The provision of services (banks, notarial offices, government entities, accommodation and food services) has significantly increased in the area.

• Land value in the area where the QIA is located has increased by 335% in ten years.

AN AIRPORT TO DREAM BIG Since 2006, when Corporación Quiport started its social responsibility programs, more than 86,000 people have benefited from projects based on responsiveness to the communities’ concerns and focused on shared value, development of local capabilities, and recovery of community wisdom with a sustainability approach.

There are 17 social and environmental programs currently in place.
