Working out of a traditional atelier near Milan, its artisans have developed new techniques and materials to produce their pieces of lighter-weight but still high jewelry. Says Carlo Traglio, Vhernier’s principal and president: “It’s the use of the artisans’ hands and their varied gestures that make all the difference.” Take it from me: Carlo inspires every piece. Finally, we tip Quest’s hat to another skilled photographer and friend, Billy Farrell, whose sharp-eyed work can be seen on pages 40-41 at the Quest 400 Party. This grateful pub has watched Billy and his terrific team of shooters grow into a world-class agency, and we’re proud to be among their legion of enthusiastic clients. AS THE FALL COLORS TURN, and the surrounding daylight dims, a virtual light box shines out from October’s pages with the brilliant work of Quest’s most celebrated contributor, Harry Benson. For over 50 fun and fortunate years, I have worked with, and been a pal of this wry Scottish genius from the wee town of Troon. And I have marveled at Harry’s keen eye, instinct, unflagging energy, and mastery of the camera as it recorded a visual history of our collective lives for the past seven decades. To capture the essence of this Fleet Street-trained wizard, I have turned to another acclaimed journalist, Jim Gaines—a dear friend of Harry’s and a much-respected colleague of mine from the old Time & Life Building. As the former managing editor of People, Life, and Time, Jim assigned Harry to many of the photo essays that Quest has recaptured in this issue. And shout-outs as well to our eagle-eyed deputy editor, Elizabeth Meigher, and to Harry’s beloved wife, Gigi, for so ably helping to compile this unparalleled retrospective. Not to be overlooked in this historic October number are three feature stories overseen and composed by Quest’s crackerjack senior editor, Kathryn Maier. On page 80, we celebrate a milestone, the 85th anniversary of Scully & Scully, another iconic (and Quest-y) institution that is the oldest store still standing on Park Avenue. Reflecting on the long-term loyalty of his generational clientele, family scion Michael Scully says, “It’s often the family connection that brings people in.” Indeed, Michael knows from whence he speaks! Kathryn also reports on a clever development in the interior design sector, where the renowned Leta Austin Foster has created PreFab (“Pretty Fabulous”!) Rooms, which can be ordered and delivered in a single day. Foster and her team need only your room dimensions and your color preferences, and with a few clicks of your mouse you can have white-glove delivery literally overnight. Says Leta, “Install in the morning and entertain that evening.” Sign us up for Quest’s offices! Creating high-end jewelry, however, takes a bit more effort, and our hardworking Kathryn shares the painstaking and unconventional processes that the house of Vhernier uses to

NEW YORK SOCIAL DIARY THIS MONTH, QUEST is honoring our friend the photojournalist Harry Benson who, on the second of December, will be celebrating his 90th birthday here in New York. Harry’s great career emerged in an era that could be considered the age of the fashion

photographer whose works dominated the magazines in this country and across the world. Harry’s work, however, was unique. He covered the world of fame and celebrity and fashion as well as the events that define the history that time. His photographs appeared

in hundreds of magazines, as well as on the covers of more than 100 of the most popular magazines in this country and in the U.K. Harry Benson became famous before he was famous. It happened in 1964, when the Scots-born photographer was working

in London for the Daily Express. He was preparing for a trip to Uganda to get photos of the country’s change in leadership. He was looking forward to this trip because it was an international matter, filled with controversy and change. Harry, then in his

mid-30s, had an eye and nose (and a camera) for the bigger picture. However, there was a last-minute change in his schedule made by his editor: Harry was to go to Paris and photograph a new British rock group called The Beatles, who were putting up at the Georges V Hotel while performing a concert in Paris. The Beatles at that moment—a British quartet of long-haired musicians in their early 20s—were a very new group, unknown to most and most unknown in America. The idea of Harry giving up his Ugandan 26 QUEST

assignment to photograph a British rock group was not appealing to him, but those were his orders, and that was his job. Meeting the Fab Four— as they shortly would be known throughout the world—did not make the assignment any more interesting. On that first night at the George V, back at their room before their performance, Harry was there with camera wondering what the hell he was going to get a shot of that would be worth looking at. The boys were all in bathrobes and Harry finally said to one of them—I think

it was George—“Why don’t you guys do something with those pillows, maybe a pillow fight!” A silly idea, at the thought of it, four young men having a pillow fight. But Harry just wanted to get to work; limitations had to be acknowledged. And so they did, and that was that: an internationally famous photograph by that young Scotsman from the Daily Express gave the Fab Four a public image that paved the way for their Fab in the eyes of the world and remains etched in the memory of millions who first saw them in that photo.

Jessica Sailer Van Lith

Within a very short time, no more than a few weeks, the Beatles came to America for the first time, accompanied by Harry Benson as their official photographer, and so the fame was born for all including the Scotsman from the Daily Express. Americans know, or I should say more specifically, the world knows Harry Benson by his photographs, even if they don’t know his name. I first had that experience (and didn’t know his name) when he photographed the Beatles’ pillow fight. That first visit to New

D AV I D PAT R I C K C O L U M B I A York was a cultural hallmark of the changing ages. The influence (eventually as background music) of the Fab Four was one of notable changes in 20th-century culture and consciousness, a significant part of a greater social movement. Its effect on Harry Benson’s professional life was, in retrospect, momentous. In the past more-thanhalf-century since his arrival with this assignment, Harry has photographed the world he’s encountered on assignment, from presidents to kings and queens, to movie stars and society beauties, war heroes to political confrontations and

natural disasters; his camera has recorded the entire lifetime of many of us. In 2014 he took an official photographic portrait of the queen, commissioned by the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. This was more than 50 years after his first portrait of the queen—taken when she opened a coalmine in 1957. Recounting the story of the assignment, Harry explained that such assignments in the presence of Her Majesty required the photographer to speak only when spoken to. On this day, at Windsor Castle, when the queen arrived for her portrait, after greeting Harry, he

asked her how her dogs were. Fine, she replied. After the portrait was taken, which was brief (as I said, Harry works fast), the queen left the room without a word. A few minutes later, she returned—with her dogs! (Harry loves dogs too, especially dachies.) Americans who were alive at the time especially remember a photograph that Harry took four years later, in June 1968 in Los Angeles, when Senator Robert Kennedy was assassinated in the Ambassador Hotel, having just won the South Dakota and California Democratic Primaries in his quest for

the party’s presidential nomination. Harry will never forget it. He was standing next to the Senator when they were confronted by Sirhan Sirhan with a gun. He also remembers clearly that the gunshot that killed Kennedy came not from Sirhan, but from behind. Only a few weeks ago, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. confirmed this when he announced that the man who killed his father (from behind) had just died. Then there are favorite Harry Benson photographs familiar to many millions of us, such as the cover photo he took for Vanity Fair magazine of President

And waited. And finally, I said, getting impatient: “Harry, when are you gonna take the *#&%@ picture?!” And he replied casually: “I already did.” We never knew. While we were busy talking, waiting, he caught us in the act. It’s a great shot of all of us, and we actually look like ourselves. He got the real person while we were waiting. I saw then that the man, the artist, the photojournalist, the portraitist has the eye to

catch the subject off-guard, at ease, waiting. You can see it over and over in his photographs. Real life as photos. On a Friday night a couple of weeks ago, I had dinner with a friend at Sette Mezzo. (Which, incidentally, is a favorite restaurant of Harry and Gigi Benson when they’re in town.) My dinner partner and I are both collectors of information that fill out stories, so we had a lot to talk about. But by eleven o’clock, the neighborhood restaurant was empty except for us. I don’t like to keep staff hanging around waiting for me to leave, so they can

go home. We were rushing to finish up our info-fest when this guy comes in off the street. And I mean “offthe-street,” and he stands at the foot of the entry steps waiting to be seated. He’s real shabby looking, older; maybe late 60s in bad shape. Black, greying hair to his shoulders, a black plastic-visor captain’s hat. But shabby. Black jacket, maybe jeans, black, black heavy-soled work shoes. I figured he was coming in asking for a for a meal or a leftover and had a lot of “bravado.” Although he didn’t look hungry. Except: He was followed by another guy, a little

younger, long tall drink of water, kinda out of the same school of shabby/whocares; maybe a little neater. A pair. Except. Behind him were two younger women, maybe late 20s, early 30s. Not dressed to kill but just plain beautiful. And Andy, the maitre’d, seeing them arrive, immediately guided them to a corner table in the back of the room. My dinner partner from his seat could see the table was being set with some bottles of wine. They were settling in. Hmm. It was a mystery until I asked Andy: who are they? Answer: Al Pacino and Leo DiCaprio, and presumably

I later learned that Mr. Pacino was/is a longtime customer, and actually I’ve seen Leo DiCaprio there before. I don’t know either, although I’ve seen Pacino on the street before. pleasure of watching him work: a thrill. And under the circumstances the other night, kind of endearing: an actor, a character, a story, many stories. You pay attention; you can’t help it. Although, that “look” is also a reflection of today among the movie stars. When you think of their counterparts from the mid-20th century and the glamour days when no star left his or her house without being cameraready (that was the law of the studios), you can see that we’ve changed. A boy from Montana, he had natural cools and dressed in the style of his time, now known as the classic. No kidding. Earlier last month on a weekday, I went down to Lincoln Center where the Couture Council of The Museum at FIT was hosting its annual Luncheon on the Promenade of the David H. Koch Theater. The honoree this year

was the world-famous footwear designer Christian Louboutin with the 2019 Couture Council Award for Artistry of Fashion. The invitation was called for 11:30 and a 12-noon sitdown. I got there at 12:25, not with intended tardiness but knowing that these big events don’t get fully seated right away. Although I was relieved when I opened the doors into the lobby of the theater that I wasn’t the only latecomer: Martha Stewart was at the seating table getting her assignment. Great minds think alike.

D AV I D PAT R I C K C O L U M B I A Just kidding. Martha and I coincidentally were guests of Eleanora Kennedy (and we had been last year and the year before and the year before) so we walked up to the mezzanine together. I asked her if she were wearing her Louboutins, figuring she probably was, as was possibly every woman at the luncheon. That’s part of the draw. She acknowledged that she was, and mid-stair she stopped and lifted her foot to show me the sole of the shoe. It was black. Louboutin’s trademark is his red sole on all of his shoes. I knew she knew that.

Did he? “I had them painted black,” she told me, “but Christian knows.” I think she may have told me why but it didn’t matter: She’s Martha Stewart, just like he’s Christian Louboutin; both creative masters. Up on the Promenade it was a big crowd, maybe the biggest. We found our table and the starter had just been served: tarte tatin aux tomates” (carmelized onion, chevre nicoise olives, herb salad, saffron aioli) Dr. Joyce Brown, the president of FIT, welcomed the guests, pointing out that this year was the 75 th anniversary of the school founded in 1944. Dr. Valerie Steele, the dynamic director and chief curator who has built The Museum at FIT into the world-class museum it is today, took the podium to announce that the event had raised more than $1 million to support the museum, to further help mount world-class exhibitions of fashion, acquire important objects for its permanent collection, and organize public programs. Today,

FIT’s fashion exhibitions are widely attended and assisted by the top designers of the world. After Brown and Steele, Jamie Nordstrom, president of stores of Nordstrom, was introduced as a major supporter of the museum shows. Mr. Nordstrom, who is son of the chain’s founder, wanted to tell us that Nordstrom is coming to New York very soon (days? months? not sure, but soon) with its own store on the West Side. D AV I D PAT R I C K C O L U M B I A decided to make the speech as a marking the occasion as a wedding of sorts between his passion for his work and FIT, acting as the “best man” dedicated to the bride (FIT) and groom (his passion). “I remember [FIT] always as dedicated, hardworking, and obsessed with fashion… always ready to share her knowledge with everyone for free,” said Louboutin. Then after expressing more, he also expressed deep gratitude toward his dear friend to whom “I sold my first collection of shoes in America—from the table of her dining room,” adding, “I’d like to share this award

with her, my friend Diane von Furstenberg—I share but I keep it,” he noted with a wry smile. A very successful first day of the autumn season for the Museum at FIT and for the launch of Fashion Week in New York once again! On Saturday, September 7, a good weather weekend with lots of clouds passing over, with temps in the low 70s by day and 60s by night, the town was back, and I was on my way that

evening to a very special party: the 90th birthday dinner for Daisy Soros. The invitation arrived six or eight weeks before, a notice of something special. The invitation itself was something special. I’d never seen anything quite like it. And I’m sure very few others among the guest list had ever seen anything quite like it, also. On opening, I couldn’t resist a quiet smile. Daisy Soros is one of those people

in New York who stands out. I’ve known her for about 25 years, sort of well, although I’m not a close friend. There are many, I’m sure, who feel that way. Because Daisy has a lot of people in her life. You can do that in New York if you have time, interest, and are well organized. Daisy has a big personality. She likes people, and has a lot of friends. What’s more, she sees a lot of her friends fairly frequently, and even meets new friends along the way. As long as I’ve known her, I came late in her life. But it doesn’t matter, because the Daisy I met back then is exactly

the same Daisy I saw on this Saturday night at the Rainbow Room, where she was hosting her party. Welcome. She and her late husband, Paul, also are/were major philanthropists. Both were Hungarian immigrants who came here as young people, after the Second World War. Among their many charitable ventures, in 1997, they created the Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans, with a charitable trust of $50 million. It was a program to give back to the country that afforded the Soros family such great opportunities. They focused on assisting young new Americans at critical points in their educations. In 2010, Daisy and Paul contributed an additional $25 million to the trust.

Sam Waterston and David Rockefeller, Jr.

Twenty years later, The Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans has become one of the most competitive graduate school fellowships in the country. It’s a $90,000 merit-based fellowship exclusively for immigrants and children of immigrants who are pursuing graduate school in the United States. The program draws nearly 1,800 applications annually for just 30 fellowships. Daisy and Paul have funded lots of public programs that give us pleasure. My favorite is the summertime dances at Lincoln Center which they sponsored, and where everybody came out to a big outdoor public dance in the sunset with great musicians. These were more than a gift. They gave us

a little shot of community, something missing most of the time in our lives in New York these days. The invitation for this occasion requested black tie, and women were told to wear white and black. There were more than 250 guests, and I didn’t see any woman not in black and white. Except for the birthday girl, our hostess, who was wearing a sunshine-red dress designed for her by Ralph Rucci (also a friend, and attending the party). The invitation called for 6:30 cocktails. I went with Joy Ingham (who was 46 QUEST

celebrating her birthday on that day also). We arrived on the 65 th floor to a reception area jammed with black and white. Although, for me, the first thing you notice when you emerge from the elevator to the Rainbow Room is the view of New York, Long Island, New Jersey: the city’s skyline, as it is everywhere else, is under construction, but the old chestnuts—the Chrysler Building and the majestic Empire State—still give you a thrill. At eight o’clock, as the sun was setting across the land below, it cast a pinkish

glow over the metropolis, a perfect overture as the guests began their move into the Rainbow Room. This building went up somewhere in the very early 1930s, so it’s close in age to our hostess. And like our hostess, it’s still in full swing magic. The move into the actual ballroom confirmed it. Designed by David Monn, it was a breathtaker—all giant white daisies festooning the room of white and black. Monn is famous in New York for his spectacular interior set designs, as you may have

noticed. This one pulled out all the stops. It is almost assured that none of us will never see a private dinner like this again, at least not for a long, long time. Daisy is one for details, and I don’t doubt that she oversaw every one of this production, and she surely added a few herself. Everyone was fascinated by the handmade paper centerpieces, each representing a time in Daisy’s life. They were little masterpieces, the kind that draw the eye of the child and the adult, so exact in dimension that I couldn’t

D AV I D PAT R I C K C O L U M B I A help looking at them frequently. Back to Daisy and the lot of friends. She entertains a lot. Someone told me she always has houseguests. Up in Nantucket and down in Jamaica, there are very often houseguests, and whether there are or not, she still entertains. I was thinking about this because of the age business. At 90, Daisy is still as fresh and on the moment as she was 25 years ago. She really has no age except for the numbers. I don’t say that as compliment but as an observation and reality. It is curious to me how she has

achieved that. Enthusiastic, indefatigable, she is one making sure to get the most out of her life. I wondered if it were “the people” that has kept her making the most of things in her life. Of course, she has the means to do whatever she wants. And her charities reflect the things that interest her, such as the summer dances, the Philharmonic and Julliard, and in assisting foreign students in getting American educations. She grew up in Hungary during the Second World War. Her mother was taken by the Nazis, and Daisy never

saw her again. Her father, who wasn’t Jewish, had put his daughter in a convent school. That saved her, although when I once asked her what was the worst thing after the war when the Soviets were running roughshod over the country. Her reply: “The lice! You couldn’t get rid of it! There was no water; you couldn’t wash.” I was thinking about that on this night as the evening progressed. There were her two sons, Peter and Jeffrey, who live in London and Los Angeles, respectively. There was the unique concert after dinner of Hershey Felder, the actor, singer, writer, and

composer, who recounted the days in the now-long life of this amazing woman, his message accompanied on the grand piano with concertos and Clare de Lune and several familiar classical musical compositions. This was followed by guests returning back to the reception area with the sparkling city surrounding below for the cake, a chorus of Happy Birthdays from students at Juilliard, a gift bag for guests, and more best wishes for our hostess. It was an incredible evening filled with best wishes and many thanks to our hostess, the birthday girl! u

AS THE DAYS dwindled down and the sea turned gray in early September, the rich and famous of the period headed for the center of the universe, New York City, the shining city on the hill, as Jan Morris described the place in her magnificent opus Manhattan ’45. Let’s face it, once the war was over, the only city left intact was New York, having come into its own while Paris, London, Berlin, and Rome burned. I’ll never forget when I first laid eyes on the place. I had just flown more than 14 hours with six stops on a TWA airliner that provided not only beds, but also first class service by beautiful stewardesses, back then unashamedly picked for their looks and figures. With diplomatic passports, my mother and I went through customs in a jiffy and my father’s car drove fast through Queens and just over a bridge I first saw Manhattan and its skyline. Words fail me because there are no words to describe the grandeur of those shining skyscrapers to a 10-year-old that had seen war and hunger for five long years. The Empire State Building, Rockefeller Center, the Chrysler Building, Radio City, this was Alice in Wonderland stuff. Then followed a quick walk down Fifth Avenue from the Sherry Netherland, where I was to spend the next 20 years of my life. The men wore suits and shoes without laces, loafers they were called, and the women all wore hats and gloves and were chic and unapproachable. The cars were large, they were yellow and red and blue with white sidewalls, and everyone seemed very well off. Ten years later, I was through with school and hit the scene running. The city was teeming with rich Argentines, Brits on the make, and Midwesterners 70 QUEST

The richest and most glamorous couple was Winston Guest, a 10-goal handicap in polo and a Phipps mother and a distant cousin to Winston Churchill and his wife C.Z., a Boston aristocrat with ashblonde hair and a beautiful face that had been immortalized by Diego Rivera, who scandalized society at the time by also showing C.Z.’s bare breasts. Guests, Cushings, Whitneys, Vanderbilts, Mortimers, and so on made society back then. No celebrities were allowed into their Long Island inner sanctums on the weekends except for the Gary Coopers and Douglas Fairbankses. El Morocco was the top nightclub for society types, the Stork Club leaning more to celebrities. El Morocco’s owner, John Perona, was the first to install a Siberia, the side of his zebra-lined banquettes reserved for couples that did not fill the bill. Outrageous snobbery was the order of the day, and not a single soul objected. Men without women were not allowed into “Elmo’s,” except for the round table where the owner sat nightly with his friends. (My father was a regular at that particular table.) Humphrey Bogart

was famously physically evicted when he arrived drunk accompanied by a giant panda doll that he claimed as a date. Bogie struggled hard but lost. Unabashed and undisguised gossip in the press was an American invention, libel laws being non-existent in the land of opportunity. Invading the lives of the famous in society and revealing their secrets and excesses empowered both the purveyor and audience. Women like Babe Paley, C.Z. Guest, the Cushing sisters and Fifi Fell were like today’s pop stars, pursued by the paparazzi and applauded at premieres. The Duke and Duchess of Windsor were considered a catch over on that side, with a few dissenting voices, that is. Ironically, gangsters were also stars. Frank Costello, the Godfather, was shaved every morning at the Waldorf Astoria barber shop and once asked me if I would introduce him to Gianni Agnelli, the Fiat owner and Italy’s foremost capitalist. (“My foirst car was a Fiat, I stuck a gun on the man who drew the lottery and he drew my numbah.” Gianni and he never met.) Manhattan was a sprawling Hopper painting: grand, golden, with news stands

and candy stores, diners and cinema palaces mixing headily with red-hued apartment houses laced with fire escapes. I took a young Joan Collins to El Morocco and the cameras snapped away. I was 20 and Joan 23. We’ve been friends ever since. Balls were given by society ladies in their beaux–arts townhouses, and the only charity shindig back then was The April in Paris Ball. People entertained at home and everyone finished the night at El Morocco. Downtown in Greenwich Village was Bohemia for us uptowners. Easy women and drugs could be found there, not that anyone took drugs back then. Hard drinking was the order of the day. Dunhill Tailors was the choice tailor of the time. Everyone was always dressed to the nines, young New York trust fund WASPs eager to outshine their British cousins. The Biltmore Hotel on Vanderbilt Avenue was the place everyone met under the clock from before F. Scott Fitzgerald’s time, and last year I watched in disbelief as the whole block was razed. As they say, the place no longer is what it used to be. In fact it stinks. u For more Taki, visit takimag.com. OCTOBER 2019 71

First introduced to chamber music by the saintly Father Ambrose Wolverton at Portsmouth Abbey—who gave up a promising concert career to enter the monastery and instead had to teach lunkheads like yours truly, and further encouraged by Professors William McClain and Elliott Galkin at Johns Hopkins—I subscribed to CMS in 1982 after getting my first raise at Macmillan, and it has been a continuing joy across the ensuing decades. Brilliant artists like violist Walter Trampler, cellist Fred Sherry, clarinetist David Shifrin, violin and violinists Ida and

Ani Kavafian, flutists Paula Robison and Tara Helen O’Connor, pianist AnneMarie McDermott, and many more have thrilled audiences over the years. The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center (CMS), is one of 11 constituents of Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. With its home in Alice Tully Hall, CMS is known for the extraordinary quality of its performances, and for setting the benchmark for chamber music worldwide. Founded by Corning Glass heiress and recitalist Alice Tully, composer William Schuman, lawyer and pianist Edward R. Wardwell, and the Society’s ebullient original artistic director, Charles Wadsworth, who also presided over the Spoleto Festival, CMS has long been the “Little Engine

THE CHAMBER MUSIC Society (CMS) of Lincoln Center will celebrate the opening of its 50th anniversary season in Alice Tully Hall on Tuesday, October 15, 2019. The program will highlight Dvořák’s “American” Quintet (a work inspired by the plains of Spillville, Iowa), works by African-American composer Harry Burleigh, and iconic American composers Aaron Copland and Leonard Bernstein. Alice Tully was a multi-dimensional force of nature who studied in Paris for 16 years before commencing her recital career, learned to fly (“I told Mother it was perfectly safe so long as you had a decent plane”), joined the Civil Air Patrol, and during World War II became a Red Cross nurse’s aide. Upon her retirement from singing in 1958, she became a committed philanthropist and

The result, of course, was that there was a wide space between rows. “That’s what the distance will be,” Alice declared. “I want to be sure that absolutely everyone, when they are listening to great music, will be totally comfortable.” As Charles Wadsworth recalled on her 90th birthday, “Hence, it was the length of Edward’s legs, rather than the possibility of two or three hundred additional ticket sales, that determined the configuration in what is unquestionably the most commodious hall in the city.” CMS’s first concert at Alice Tully

In the early 2000s, CMS weathered a two-year “Babylonian Captivity” at the Ethical Culture Society auditorium while Alice Tully Hall underwent a complete renovation, and the triumphant result has made for an even more commodious hall with greatly enhanced lighting and acoustics. Along with Eddie Wardwell and Anne Coffin, CMS’s board has been led by

supported causes closest to her heart in medicine, education, wildlife preservation, and the arts—especially music. As Lincoln Center was being planned, her cousin Arthur Houghton assumed a leadership role with John D. Rockefeller, Jr., and that, together with the recruitment of her friend Charlie Wadsworth to lead a chamber music constituent, inspired her to endow Alice Tully Hall as its home. She was its chairman of the board for 20 years and was a hands-on leader. As the hall was being designed, she brought her friend Edward Graeffe, who stood about six-foot-three, to the American Seating Company. The company did a mock-up of two rows and Alice told Edward to sit down, stretch out his legs and get as comfortable as he possibly

Hall was presented on Alice’s birthday, September 11, 1969. In later years, former CMS president Anne Coffin remembers Alice presiding over board meetings at her Hampshire House duplex, ringing a bell briskly to bring the meeting to order, and soon thereafter falling asleep. At the memorial concert that followed her death, Bronx-born tenor Bobby White brought down the house when he said, “Alice was proud of many things, but there was nothing she was prouder of than being Irish,” before launching into a deeply moving rendition of “Danny Boy,” delivered as if he were singing just to her. In 2000, as a millennial gift to the city, the Society presented the entire Beethoven String Quartet cycle free of

Today, under the gifted leadership of co-artistic directors David Finckel and Wu Han, and executive director Suzanne Davidson, CMS presents a wide variety of concerts and educational events for listeners of all ages, in New York and internationally, and is set to pave the path of the chamber music future around the world for many decades to come. The metallic design is inspired by the agricultural sheds commonly seen on farms in the area. The home features three fireplaces, a Boffi kitchen, and a generator. Along with the 3,500-square-foot main house, Weiwei and HFF were also commissioned to design a unique Y-shaped guest house, which includes two bedrooms as well as a studio and gallery space. BY KATHRYN MAIER FOR GENERATIONS, New Yorkers have turned to one store when celebrating life’s most major milestones—weddings and anniversaries, holidays and birthdays, decorating a new house. For 85 years, Scully & Scully has been the place to go. And for that entire time, it’s been in the same location on Park Avenue. It’s the oldest store still standing on Park Avenue, and over the years it’s expanded so much that it’s now ten times larger than it was just 25 years ago. The store’s inventory, meanwhile, has grown to fill the expanded space. Michael Scully, the store’s owner (and the son of the store’s original founders), estimates it carries 20,000 to 25,000 different items: a high-end selection of china, crystal, jewelry, leather goods, gift items, fine furnishings…the list goes on. He travels the globe to find them, and many of the pieces are exclusive to the store. And if what

you’re looking for isn’t included in that enormous inventory, the store is happy to special-order it for you. That’s just one example of the exquisite customer service on which Scully & Scully prides itself. The store is so popular for wedding registries not just because of its enormous selection of tabletop offerings, but also because of the attentive staff who advise couples on mixing and matching china patterns—which then go on display on two dining tables in the department, each place set with a recently engaged couple’s chosen patterns and labeled with a place card. It’s popular for those (re)decorating a home not just for its incredible wares, but also because it offers This page: Scully & Scully’s storefront on Park Avenue. full-service interior design, selling goods from the store and also externally sourced pieces as well. Jonathan Tate, the store’s on-staff designer, has done homes from India to Australia. That service, plus the store’s selection of items—its array of whimsical goods from around the world that you can’t find anywhere else—are what keep drawing the most sophisticated customers to the store year after year. Celebrities, multiple presidents, and a pope have all patronized the store; Mr. Scully declines to name names. He seems to place more value on the longstanding relationships the store has built with generations of clients over the years. “We’ve had the grandparents register, the children register, and now we’re in the third-generation registry,” he says. “It’s often a family connection that brings people in.” Scully doesn’t see the rise of online shopping, the bane of many other stores, as a threat; Scully & Scully has offered a catalog since its earliest days. “It’s an easier transition for us 82 QUEST

to the internet than for most brick and mortar stores,” Scully says, “because we were already selling products all over the country, with a picture and description. So it’s not that different.” It helps that most of Scully & Scully’s offerings are unique to the store, and its selection eschews generic crowd-pleasers in favor of items that may appeal to more niche interests. “I think if people come to us,” Scully says, “they don’t want something they can find just any place. It’s very important we have something exclusive or unique or something that stands out.” Some might say it’s the store for the person who has everything, but Michael Scully takes a slightly different view. “It’s for the people who would like to have everything,” he says with a laugh. u Scully & Scully is located at 504 Park Ave. For more information, visit scullyandscully.com or call 212.755.2590.

UPPER EAST SIDE WELCOMES BECKFORD HOUSE & TOWER B Y B R O O K E K E L LY

Brooke Kelly: Tell me about the development of Beckford House & Tower—who was involved? Barbara Russo: Beckford House & Tower is reinventing the iconic sophistication of the Upper East Side with all of the amenities and embellishments that modern luxury living demands. Designed by Studio Sofield, the two structures are clad in Indiana Limestone and hand-carved, hand-laid brick, blending beautifully into the context of the neighborhood and appearing as though they have been standing on Second Avenue for decades. There is a true sense of grace and grandeur at Beckford House & Tower that has not been achieved on the

BR: Rich with culture, history, and heritage architecture, the Upper East Side epitomizes classic New York. The neighborhood is regarded as one of the most refined in the city and is home to acclaimed restaurants, world-class museums, and the finest schools. BK: Tell us about the different units available. PRETTY FABULOUS FURNISHINGS BY KATHRYN MAIER FOR MORE THAN FOUR DECADES, Leta Austin Foster’s interior design work has been in-demand up and down the East Coast and across the country. Now, her inimitable eye and taste can be had for far less time and money than hiring a decorator to custom-design your home. With the launch of Pretty Fabulous Rooms (PreFab Rooms for short), Foster’s style is accessible to all. For PreFab Rooms, Foster has designed several different completely furnished, shoppable rooms that can be purchased with a few clicks of a mouse. Her team asks for a rough sketch of your space, with dimensions, then draws up a floor plan and makes suggestions about paint schemes and if any additional items should be considered, such as blinds or an extra sofa to fill out an especially large room. The PreFab rooms can be ordered online and delivered—with white-glove service—and installed within a day. “Install in the morning and entertain that evening,” as Foster says. It’s just that easy. PreFab Rooms are also much cheaper than hiring a designer… and by using Foster’s sourcing and connections, they’re far cheap-

er than ordering the items yourself and paying for them individually. And you needn’t worry about having the same room as a friend; each is limited availability and designs quickly cycle out. There currently are six living-dining rooms on offer, and three bedrooms—including a collaboration with Billy Baldwin Studio (that’s Billy Baldwin the legendary decorator, whose clients included Diana Vreeland and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, not the actor). As an example, when ordering the Southampton bedroom, you have a choice between two color schemes, and the set includes: a headboard, two square pillows, a bedspread and dust ruffle, two bedside tables, three lamps with shades, one bench, one chair, a throw pillow, a side table, a floor lamp, a mirror, a chest, a rug, and a pair of curtains with curtain rod. The package is $34,000 to suit a queen-size bed and $35,000 for a king. Completely furnishing a room with no more effort than buying a handbag online? That’s a pretty fabulous idea. u Visit prettyfabulousrooms.com for more information.

EACH YEAR, a crisp breeze in the air and the changing leaves in Central Park mean one thing for New Yorkers: Fall is coming. But for the last four years, the shift of season has a second meaning for philanthropists, art enthusiasts, collectors, and top interior designers: TEFAF is coming. The Dutch import, which launched its first edition stateside in 2016, returns again this year from November 1st to 5th at the Park Avenue Armory, with the annual Opening Night benefit for The Society of Memorial Sloan Kettering (MSK) on October 31st. Regarded by many as the kickoff to the fall social season, this year’s Opening Night attendees can expect many elements of the signature TEFAF experience they’ve come to know and love—oysters and Champagne, museum-quality masterpieces, collectors in animated conversation with top dealers from 90 QUEST

around the world, and ladies fabulously dressed in Etro, an Opening Night sponsor. However, there are exciting changes in store as well. For the first time, this year’s fair will feature a collection of booth collaborations, with dealers specializing in historic and contemporary art exhibiting together in the same space. Some of the world’s most renowned specialists have joined forces to help showcase the aesthetic interplay between historic and modern art. “TEFAF is well-known for offering visitors an unparalleled experience,” says Sofie Scheerlinck, managing director of TEFAF New York. “We want to ensure our savvy attendees experience something new every time they visit the fair. concept is very much in that spirit, with exhibitors joining forces to illustrate thought-provoking connections among their varying fields of expertise.” In addition to the works on offer at the fair, TEFAF and Bank of America will co-present the highly-anticipated next installment from the groundbreaking portrait series, “Artfully Dressed: Women in the Art World,” by Carla van de Puttelaar. The theatrical and intimate photographs shine a light on the many talented women who make up the art world, showcasing their important accomplishments, intelligence, power, and beauty. The exhibition at TEFAF will feature a number of new portraits of subjects from a wide range of cultural backgrounds, nationalities, ages, and professions. Opening Night of TEFAF New York Fall also begins a new era for The Society of MSK, as it will be the first event for recently inducted Society president Kate Allen. Allen has experience in a variety of leadership roles across Society committees and has been recognized for her deep commitment to the organization. “Opening Night is such a glamorous, exciting evening for all of us at The Society, and I’m so looking forward to welcoming the evening’s guests and exploring the Fair with my wonderful co-chairs. IN GOOD HANDS PERFECTION TAKES TIME. And when you’re talking about

the beauty of a piece of handcrafted jewelry by Vhernier, that type of perfection takes months, if not years. Since the house was founded in 1984, its modern, elegant creations—their designs inspired by contemporary artwork, architecture, or nature—have been sculpted by hand by the most expert artisans. These highly experienced master craftsmen work wonders of precision and engineering, using only the most beautiful natural materials. Stones like jade, carnelian, and lapis lazuli are selected based on their vibrant colors, and cut specifically for each individual piece of jewelry. These, as well 94 QUEST

as the rock crystal Vhernier uses in its “trasparenze,” or transparencies, must not have even the slightest defect, “otherwise any imperfection would be magnified and compromise the beauty of the jewel,” says the house. It’s the artisans’ ability to combine traditional jewelry-making skills, such as the melting and shaping of gold, with incredibly innovative techniques that sets Vhernier apart. The craftsmanship is born from the desire to create designs that are radically different from anything else the market has to offer. For example, colored titanium (used in the house’s Velvet collection) and the Eyeliner pavé (shown on these pages) are created

on these pages) are created using new and unconventional techniques, within a very traditional atelier near Milan. And that work takes time. Even the less-elaborate pieces, all sculptures in their own rights, can take 60 days to produce; others, requiring more complex work, take weeks, months, or even years more. In order to create the house’s innovative jewelry, the artisans devote much of their work to researching new techniques. For working with less common materials—for instance, titanium—it took three years to develop ways to work with such a durable metal and transform it into elegant and lightweight jewelry. Titanium is renowned for its incredible strength, but this strength makes, for example, setting diamonds challenging; Vhernier’s artisans eventually developed the necessary techniques. When working with the metal, however, unlike gold, any time there is an imperfection, the artisan must start from scratch and discard what’s already been done, rendering the work a very painstaking process. Above all, it’s the artisans, their skills and workmanship, that matter in creating the jewels. Carlo Traglio, president of Vhernier, says each artisan’s movements are paramount. “It’s not just the use of the hands,” he says, “but the gestures the artisans make. A fast gesture or a slower one, a more marked gesture or a softer one; that makes all the difference.” u 00 9 6 QUEST

GIVING HOPE BY BENNETT MARCUS GRAMMY AWARD-WINNING singer/songwriter LeAnn Rimes will be honored at the Hope for Depression Research Foundation’s annual luncheon at The Plaza on November 6. Each year, the foundation honors a celebrity who has been open about their struggle with depression and its related mood disorders, to help raise awareness. “People relate to celebrities,” says the organization’s founder, Audrey Gruss. “Every celebrity that speaks out about it really represents millions of people who are still afraid to talk about depression or feel that there’s a stigma surrounding it, and who don’t understand that it’s actually a medical illness that 98 QUEST

affects the entire body. It’s a mind-and-body medical illness and you can get treatment for it.” Each year, the luncheon, which has become a highlight of New York’s social calendar, focuses on a certain aspect of depression. This year, the 13th, Dr. Maria Oquendo, chairman of psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania medical school, will talk about depression and anxiety, because they often occur concurrently. She will explain how doctors diagnose the condition, as well as the latest treatments. Also honored will be Dr. Husseini Manji, global head of neuroscience at a division of Johnson & Johnson, one of Hope for Depression’s corporate

sponsors. “Dr. Manji is at the forefront of neuroscience in this area,” says Gruss. He has developed a ketamine-based therapy, recognized by the FDA as a breakthrough, that has swiftly alleviated depressive symptoms in clinical trials. The foundation’s goals are to find a medical test to determine what kind of depression a patient has, as well as to develop new and better treatments, improve prevention, and to ultimately find a cure. To accomplish this, Hope for Depression has established a groundbreaking Depression Task Force, a collaborative effort among medial facilities to share their research in real time at the Hope Database Center at the University of Michigan. It’s a new paradigm for doing scientific research, Gruss says, because normally research is done separately by different universities and organizations, and only shared once it is complete. And it has borne fruit: Animals with low levels of a substance called LAC were depressed, those with higher levels were not, and now clinical studies of the substance in humans are in progress. The hope is that the research leads to the first-ever blood test to determine whether a person is depressed.

Tests are also underway to develop a completely different category of antidepressant, which have remained unchanged since 1985, when Prozac was first approved. “Fifty percent of those who struggle with depression do not respond to the existing anti-depressants, and 50 percent of the people who have depression or related mood disorders do not seek medical help,” says Gruss. “Those two statistics alone were staggering to me.” She founded the organization because her mother—whose name was Hope—struggled with depression for years. Gruss, who holds a degree in biology, did some digging and found that although depression is among the most prevalent of illnesses, the field was underfunded by the government. Active in several other philanthropic organizations, Gruss previously had a career in business, working for J.P. Stevens, Revlon, and Elizabeth Arden, and later running her own international marketing company. Her scientific training and business background has informed her approach to everything she does. “I learned inductive and deductive reasoning, and I apply that to almost any problem that I approach.” u OCTOBER 2019 99

daring or cutting-edge as it becomes more and more expensive. Downtown possesses the strongest heartbeat of all the parts of New York. Q: Where would you direct someone looking for an investment property downtown? A: Hudson Square is where we live, and not accidentally. Hudson Square is a neighborhood that didn’t have a name 10 years ago and is now amidst the greatest transformation of any neighborhood in the city. Putting aside that both Google and Disney are building campuses here, the increase in condos and services due to massive development has created a whole new neighborhood that is coming alive. The area is anchored by the Hudson River Park, which runs along the western border of the island.

Q: Tell me about the most ideal residential neighborhoods downtown. A: We love the West Village as it has maintained itself the most over the years—staying true to its low-rise, principally residential feel, with small shops and restaurants, and tree lined streets. The townhouse culture is still alive and well and has not given way to the world of condominiums that has overtaken so many of our other downtown neighborhoods. Q: How would you describe the downtown vibe? A: It remains vibrant and youthful, though perhaps a bit less

Q: Who is the typical downtown buyer? A: The downtown buyer is now just about anyone. The past stereotype of downtown only appealing to young or less conservative buyers is long gone. Buyers now range from young to old, just starting out to empty nesters; we see people in finance just as much as we see artists and other creatives. As more of the city gentrifies, we see a homogenization taking place—the most common unifier is wealth.

Q: What do you expect this fall? A: I have already started to see a slight pick-up within certain price points and with the overall rental market. I believe that we will see more attention to appropriately priced units, both sale and rental; I do not expect to see real estate flying off the shelves. Market equilibrium will take time, patience, and courtesy from all parties involved. Perception is always a key variable. Q: What makes Berkshire Hathaway stand out? A: I can say with certainty that it is the brand itself. In Fortune’s list of “The World’s Most Admired Companies,” Berkshire Hathaway is third after Apple and Amazon. I have had the opportunity to travel much of the world in the past year, and it has been eye-opening just to see how well the brand is recognized. Plus, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices is among America’s fastest-growing real estate brokerage networks, with nearly 50,000 agents and 1,500 offices, with network members in Berlin, London, Milan, and Dubai. That international component is very important in New York City. Q: What kind of properties are selling? A: I personally sell and rent all types of properties. My view is to have a long-term relationship with an individual, re-

gardless of what they are selling. Nothing is too small or too large. It is in having a relationship that allows me to be completely frank in market environments such as the one we are facing, where it can take up to six months to sell a property. Everyone’s expectations must be carefully addressed. It is a must to think outside the box as it relates to marketing, all while having a constant open line of communication about the process with the client. Q: Are you seeing an increasing younger presence uptown? A: I don’t believe it is any younger now than it has been for the past several years, but I do hear often that the younger presence is increasing uptown. More and more people ae finding their way back uptown.

Homes are built better now than ever before, incorporating the latest advancements in materials and energy efficiency, and selecting the latest preferences in architectural style. The towns, villages, and hamlets of The Hamptons each still retain their own unique flavor and there is truly something here for every taste—a modern home on the water, a gambrel overlooking a reserve, or a traditional in-town. Q: Anything else you’d like to share? A: The Hamptons has grown as a year-round community since I first moved here 15 years ago. During my career in real estate, I have seen more and more families drawn throughout the entire year to the spacious, natural living environment, proximate to the shoreline and where horse farms and farm fields abound and recreational facilities are easily accessible.

Q: Are you seeing a buyers’ market or a sellers’ market? A: We are still living in a buyers’ market. There is sufficient inventory from which the buyer can choose, however, I anticipate that state of affairs may change shortly as prime inventory is now going into contract and, since we were just in a short-term slow down, there is less new inventory to replace it. This is a great time to make a good deal. Q: What kind of homes are selling and where? A: There is a strong preference here for new construction.

Q: How would you describe The Hamptons in the fall, and does this affect market activity? A: The fall is truly special in The Hamptons. The beaches are still beautiful, the open landscapes change colors throughout the day, and it’s just easier to get around after Labor Day. Film festivals, fall harvest festivals, Pumpkintown, farmers’ markets and numerous other activities call to all types of visitors. This fall we are experiencing a significant increase in market activity, relative to past years and to the summer season. I attribute the activity increase to purchases that had been deferred; many potential buyers who were expecting a decline in prices as inventory had increased are no longer waiting.

Q: Do you expect real estate sales to remain strong this month, following Hurricane Dorian? A: The Palm Beach real estate market continues to stay robust and we have had a very strong summer selling season buoyed by the high end of the market. Q: I know many have been looking to size down—have you noticed increased interest in apartment buildings? A: There is an interest in larger apartments as people are looking to simplify their lives. Many have extensive art collections that require a good amount of wall space. Very few buildings in Palm Beach offer 4000+ square-foot apartments, and some of our clients have opted to go across the bridge to The Bristol. This is a brand-new, state-of-the-art luxury building with gorgeous views, white-glove service, and a lot of square footage. These condos started at $5+ million and are nearly sold out, but there are resales available.

Q: Tell me about the booming job market, and new hotspots. A: As more people are relocating here, the job market and real estate market are thriving. People are flocking here for the tax advantages, the beautiful weather, and, of course, the Palm Beach lifestyle. We are excited about two New York restaurants coming to town: La Goulue and Le Bilboquet. Q: Anything else you’d like to share? A: Corcoran Group has an exclusive partnership with Adfenix, an artificial intelligence engine that intuitively generates Facebook advertisements for property listings. Each ad is targeted to a “ready-now buyer” with optimal timing. This is a huge advantage for our sellers and is something that no other brokerage in Palm Beach can offer.

Q: Will real estate sales remain strong this month, following Hurricane Dorian? A: Yes, I think the positives of living and enjoying the Palm Beach area outweigh the potential risk of a storm. Not a week goes by where I am not speaking with prospective buyers here who are looking to relocate from their northern address. The advantage of domiciling here in Florida, with no state income tax, is important to high income earners. Couple that with the weather, the resort lifestyle—be it golf, tennis, beach, boating, fishing, arts and cultural activities—and the convenience to shopping, restaurants, medical care, good schools, and a nearby airport, and Palm Beach looks very attractive. Q: I know many have been downsizing—have you noticed increased interest in condominiums? A: Yes, condominiums, especially larger square footage units and new construction, have been in demand. HARRY BENSON: A RETROSPECTIVE

SUMMARIZING A CAREER is never easy. Summarizing Harry Benson’s is impossible. He is the most prolific photographer of this or any generation, and he is still adding every day to an incomparable life’s work. His subjects range from monarchs to paupers, from comic relief to mayhem, from Muhammad Ali mugging with the Beatles to the aged Winston Churchill as he made his last visit to his boyhood school. Harry has photographed the last 12 U.S. presidents and covered all their trials and victories, embedding himself in the war protests and race riots of the 1960s and with U.S. forces during the invasion of Iraq. He walked, backwards, ahead of Dr. Martin Luther King on the James Meredith March 114 QUEST

Against Fear in Mississippi in June 1966, and he was in the hotel kitchen with Robert Kennedy when the bullets rang out. And that short résumé does not come close to capturing the depth of his work, and even less the measure of his life. He still speaks in the accent of Troon, his hometown near Glasgow, by the beach where he watched Nazi bombers on their way to Coventry and London. He was too young to start working then, but he was taking memorable pictures for the local Hamilton Advertiser when he was in his early 20s. In no time at all, Scotland lost him to Fleet Street, where more than one newspaper discovered the initiative and deceptive charm that landed him exclusives on everything from royal

they met this time, they talked about their mutual love of dogs and about the passage of time. Harry felt uniquely honored that she agreed to sit for him again, and you can find his portrait in the National Portrait Gallery of Scotland. But you won’t find Harry there. He’ll be off to the next job. u Jim Gaines is the former managing editor of People, Life, and Time magazines.

scandals to IRA maneuvers to colonial rebellions in Africa. Then London lost him too, by assigning him to cover the Beatles on their first visit to the United States in January 1964. He got off the plane behind them in New York City and has lived there ever since. In the years that followed, he took more pictures for Life magazine than any photographer in its history. He worked for Time, Newsweek, Vanity Fair, Paris Match, French Vogue, Quest, and many other publications as well, but their editors never complained that he was working for the competition because they knew that, when a good story came along, no one could beat him. These too are just bare facts. The best evidence of his stature as a photographer—his instinct, skill, persistence, and sharp, unblinking eye—is in the work brought together in his 16 books, in his dozens of solo exhibitions, in the collections of umpteen museums and galleries, and, not incidentally, on these pages. The measure of the man is in his marriage of 51 years to Gigi, his agent-manager, archivist, printer, greatest fan (and reality check as needed)—and in his devotion to their two wise and talented daughters, Wendy and Tessa. Harry became a U.S. citizen years ago, but Scotland has not relinquished its hold on him. Despite having given up golf (which had never been kind to him), he still loves to visit the home where he grew up as often as he can. In 2014, he was commissioned to make a new formal portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. He had taken his first picture of her in 1957, when she had come to Scotland to open a mine (The Rothes Colliery) in Thornton, Fifeshire. She was barely 30 then and still new to the throne, but a half-century later, she named Harry a Commander of the Order of the British Empire. When

In February 1964, Harry Benson accompanied the Beatles to Miami Beach for their second appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. Over John Lennon’s objections, Benson arranged to photograph the Fab Four with a young, hot boxer, then called Cassius Clay. “Ali completely dwarfed them.” When Clay would say “Who’s the most beautiful?” reports Benson, “They all had to say, ‘You are, sir!’”

May 11, 1978. New York City. Studio 54. Midnight. “The extraordinary fantasy celebration for Valentino Garavani’s 46th birthday was orchestrated in just two days by Valentino’s longtime friend and business partner, Giancarlo Giammetti. Valentino was dressed as Ringmaster of the Fantasy Circus, with a select few friends actually wearing the amazing original costumes designed by Danilo Donati for the 1970 Federico Fellini film The Clowns. Giammetti wore an ornate, multicolored sequined coat complete with a white organza ruffled collar, topped with a silver-sequined, cone-shaped hat. Directly in front of Giammetti in my photograph, wearing a simple white caftan and black hat, is the artist Joe Eula, whose sketches for Halston’s designs are legendary. I didn’t stay long at Studio 54 but heard afterward that Valentino remained his serene, unflappable self the entire evening and slipped away quietly around 4 a.m., leaving the revelry in full swing.”

She was standing very still, looking straight at me. Her gaze didn’t change as I approached her, continuing to take photographs as I walked. She is the ultimate professional and knew she was giving me a good photograph. When she went out topless into the waiting crowd, she threw her arms into the air to approving applause. THE MOXY EAST VILLAGE’S OPENING sea, Moxy Hotels has now launched a new location in the East Village, located directly across the street from Webster Hall. The hotel’s interiors—designed by Rockwell Group—are adorned with graffiti and musical elements inspired by the punk era. Each guest room is equipped with a vintage vinyl record player, as well as a mirror with a handwritten note, “Welcome to the show! Let’s make some noise!” both reflecting the spirit of the hotel. Always about the nightlife, Moxy Hotels are packed with live-

The Moxy East Village is no exception with its multiple lounges, as well as Tao Group’s new Cathedrale restaurant—an extravagant underground space with 26-foot ceilings and French-Mediterranean fare. The venue pays homage to Fillmore East (once known as the Church of Rock ‘n’ Roll), and to launch its opening, Tao hosted a themed bash with DJ sets by Bella. FOR THE PAST MORE-THAN-HALF-CENTURY, photographer Harry Benson (whom we honor within these pages, on the occasion of his 90th birthday) has captured nearly every historical happening and pop-culture icon in America and across the pond. We’re proud that he’s also shot society movers-and-shakers and artistic luminaries for Quest, as well: 13 covers and, we hope, counting. From Gillian Hearst and Christian Simonds on the cover of our September 2007 issue to Mila Mulroney this past April—and notables in-between including Andy Warhol, Brooke Astor, Ivanka Trump, and Robert A.M. Stern—many of our favorite people have passed before Benson’s lens to grace the cover of this magazine. We’re certain there will be many more. u 144 QUEST
