FIGHTING AGAINST Period poverty
Queen Shela Mogaila’s story is one of resilience and dedication,rooted in her own experiences growing up in rural Limpopo. She faced the struggles of period poverty, stigma, and limited access to menstrual products, she developed a deep conviction to bring about change.In 2009,she founded GentiSheMenstrualCupPtyLtd, they are committed to creating sustainable menstrual health solutions that reflect passion for social impact and environmental responsibility.She is a trail blazer across Africa, addressing critical issues of accessibility, women’s empowerment,and ecological preservation through innovative products and education.
Queen Shela’s journey with GentiShe has been driven by a profound connection to her own life challenges especially the loss of her daughter due to murder.Her experiences not only her purpose but also became the foundation for the social impacts he wished to create.
She was determined to help other women overcome similar barriers and as a result expanded GentiShe from its initial menstrual cup offering, which first launched in India in 2011 before reaching SouthAfrica, to a comprehensive line of eco-friendly menstrual products, including biodegradable pads and other sustainable options.
Her journey has seen many significant milestones:in 2015, Queen Shela collaborated with the Transnet Foundation for a pilot study in Limpopo, gaining insights that fueled her innovative approach. In 2019, she developed the 35-Day Genti She Biodegradable Pads,an eco-conscious product crafted to balance comfort, hygiene, and environmental impact. In 2024, she had an opportunity to be recognized with multiple awards, expanded retail partnerships, and a successful pre-Series She was funded from the Innovative Finance Network, all of which have empowered her to broaden GentiShe’s reach and impact.
