Kadedra King I am 26 years old Kadedra King, qualified Makeup Artist, Cosmetologist, and Entrepreneur. I am the founder of Beautified Secrets Studio and Edible Secret Treats in the beautiful island of Barbados, West Indies. Beautified Secrets Studio (my baby) was established 6 years ago but has been in business for the past 4 years. I never expected this would be my path, but this is clearly a part of my purpose and I totally love and enjoy every moment of it. After developing an interest in the beauty industry at a young age, I pursued Makeup Artistry and later added qualifications of Cosmetologist and Massage Therapist under my belt. I have spent my time improving and learning new skills to add to the beauty bag and enhance my career and craft by extension. My number one goal is for my clients and students to enjoy their experience and to leave feeling completely refreshed, revitalized ten times confident whenever they sit in my chair. Additionally, my focus is to provide the most astounding service and ensure every client gets the best consideration. Edible Secret Treats was established in January of 2021 and currently specializes in cheesecakes in all forms. This business sprung from an experiment during quarantine and it was at that time that I discovered a new skill and enjoyment for baking sweet treats. After receiving compliments from colleagues and family members about how great my cakes had tasted and overwhelming encouragement from my sister, I then decided why not make it a business and see where it takes me. From The Desk Of The Editor I AM WOMAN

BOLD FEARLESS AND

The definition of boldness is to take risks or act innovatively, confident and courageous! By definition, bold women are those who are clear about what they want and their purpose in life. It's fairly easy to be confused on which direction to go, but bold women have the conviction of their direction and path. They're strong, persistent, and driven to do whatever it is they're passionate about. They set definitions and chart their paths while leaving a trail for others to follow. This Women’s International Day I want to encourage all women to be bold and fearless in everything you do. A bold woman is not afraid to be the odd one in the room. The one who will fight for justice, social change and the ability to have a seat at the table, either they give us a seat or we will bring a chair. We are fearlessly different, we set trends and redevelop who we are while breaking the status quo. We are women bold, fearless and strong! We are the backbone of society, we have the ability to transform atmospheres and shift thinking. We revolt against policies and treaties that threaten us as a society we have been underestimated for centuries but we refuse to remain silent; ask Rosa Parks we will always stand for what we believe in. We are the fearless Esthers to our generation, willing to sacrifice ourselves for the greater good. We are mothers to nations and just like the phenoenician woman in the bible we are fearless, relentless and determined to pursue all God has for us. We will continue to birth the life we want to see. Women have toiled the soil for years and we are not accepting one position or one ideology of who society thinks we should or can be. We are going to be everything God has called us to be. To my sisters who are reading our magazine it is my prayer for you to believe in you again! you have absolutely everything it takes to become all that you can be. Do not allow anyone to box you in or trample upon your dreams. If you can think of it you can achieve it, our minds are one of the most powerful resources we have. We have examples such Oprah Winfrey, Michelle Obama, Harriet Tubman, Maya Angelou, Kamala Harris, Mia Amor Mottley, Sarah-ann Gill, Edna Ermy Bourne, Velma Scantlebury, Shonda Rhimes and Rihanna Fenty just to name a few. These are all women who pursued their passions and calling and refused to settle or accept the norm. They pushed beyond the grain and we can too. Gone are the days where women had to stay home and cook and clean, now we hold offices, run huge corporations, lead countries and create new inventions while being mothers and wives. As you read the words of these powerful women, I invite you to be inspired by their boldness and know that their boldness and fearlessness is only a representation of you!

HOW DID QUEENSMINDSET COME ABOUT? Queensmindset is a brand created in 2017, I was inspired to educate, empower and encourage women from all backgrounds about their power. I had attended a convention and after that convention I felt it so strongly in my spirit that I needed to encourage women. I had been hearing the stories of women who gave up on themselves because of the pressures of life for quite some time but I never felt qualified to motivate or inspire. Then God reminded me the mere fact I didn’t feel qualified to share confirmed why it needed to be done because many women are waiting for one voice to stand up so that they too and speak up. I believe Queensmindset can have a lasting effect on women of colour and it is my mandate to stimulate the minds of women and challenge them to think differently so they can achieve more.

WHAT IS QUEENSMINDSET ABOUT? Queensmindset was created to inspire women of color, to provide insight and discuss all issues related to women. These conversations cover relationships, business, personal development, emotional stability and most importantly the mindset of a Queen. In the bible God reminds us that we are a part of his royal heritage, an heir of his kingdom therefore if we are of this heritage then our actions should reflect. The focus of Queensmindset is to challenge women to think differently by impacting and empowering them to reach their fullest potential.

kameisha hurdle MORE THAN A WOMAN They say women are supposed to be home makers; to clean, nurture and cook, Not to meddle in men's affairs; to be silent, stay in a corner or go read a book. Imagine a man dictating what I shall and shall not do, I thought we were making strides, isn’t this 2022? Because I am female, I am told to take my place, Not to overstep my boundaries but move at my partner’s pace. I’m from a certain background, so I definitely do not deserve nice things, Last time I checked, we run the world; y’all have to be seriously joking. Countless girls across the globe denied an education, For fear of what we can achieve with our determination. That’s a man domain, this is no place for girls, Remember the Polytechnique mass shooting that rocked the entire world? Disgraceful to think that you only see me as a wife, Can you fathom what else I am capable of other than bringing life? You kidnap us and torture us for your own fantasy, Are you that intimidated by our perseverance, drive and tenacity? And how is inequality still a thing, being paid lesser than our counterparts? We can draw house plans, implement policies and analyze data and charts. So, don’t you dare tell me that my work and skills aren’t worth paying for. We will not stay silent and be treated unfairly; rest assured, we’ll start a war. We have to beg for the field to be leveled, and this should not be. We still have to fight and march and beg just for a little penny? Withholding funds as a means of control should never happen to anyone. We demand the same spending power as Mike, Stephen and John.

We have to beg for the field to be leveled, and this should not be. We still have to fight and march and beg just for a little penny? Withholding funds as a means of control should never happen to anyone. We demand the same spending power as Mike, Stephen and John. We insist on having our voices heard, so that you know our plea. If you were in this predicament, would you be genuinely happy? We ought to feel safe and confident when challenging the status quo, To secure a brighter future and a better tomorrow. Don’t you dare downplay our trials or censor our feminist channels, The more you resist, the louder we get; this is an ideal we’ve got to dismantle. Changing the narrative is the end goal, at least for us it seems. We need to know that we are not being ignored even if we have to scream. Can we also talk about emotional and mental abuse? The mind games and manipulation of what we are allowed to do? Your intention is to break us, so we don’t stand a chance. It’s like you want to think for us, pull strings and tell us when to dance. It's hard enough to be female, but we are mentally strong, You can do as you like and get away with it but not for long. Once we’ve made our minds up, we are going to win, We have been treated unfairly for too long; our patience has been stretched thin. So my queens, rise up and be fearless against all odds, Nobody else can chart your path for you, that’s God’s only job. Be empowered, bold and confident by being true to you, Overcome everything they throw at you; let your resilience shine through.

She believes that working on herself as an individual will enhance the lives of others tremendously.

I started as a youth leader, and my mission and passion lead me to grow as a youth with a sold out passion for Christ. My husband who was my fiancée at that time was also a youth leader and even though we were members of two different organizations, our hearts both beat to the rhythm of the gospel. As we developed in life, our journey took us through various leadership positions: he, a deacon and me, faithfully by his side; he, the assistant pastor and I, a minister; he, the pastor and I, the co-pastor; he, the Bishop of the organization and I, the First Lady.

We knew of God’s promises, but they came in levels of glory we never imagined. The journey of these positions have been challenging and filled with both highs and lows, big and small wins, elevations and promotions, as well as sorrows and joy, but I have kept going. Amidst everything I have encountered, one thing remains constant; I am happy to remain faithful to the call of God on my life and to stay by His side.

It is funny how I never wanted to get married, because I saw the sadness and lack of Kerry aspires to become a sought after fulfillment of many women in marriage both in speaker, preacher, and life coach as she church and out of church. But, God clearly had endeavors to paint this world in an array of a different plan for my life and today, I am a beautiful colors, with her gifts. A quote by Dr. happy and fulfilled married woman. Juggling Cindy Trimm in her book, Unleash God’s Power the many hats I wear is sometimes in Your life Every Day of the Year, sums up the challenging especially when I want to give so life of Kerry Clarke. much more but my limitations prevent me. I have not mastered it all, but I am committed I quote: “Let my words be more than to keep at it. I operate on a slogan which says, motivation, let them carry life.” “Today, I maximize every effort, so I practice being intentional about what I do.” It is easier My journey as a pastor’s wife and co-pastor said than done, so writing and planning helps began with a prophecy where God had said to me to work with ease even though I love me, “I am not giving this man to you as just working under pressure. your husband, but I am giving him to you for ministry.” I knew then that my responsibility was not just to be a wife, but to be a helpmeet in the ministry. God brought into my life a man I never would have imagined would be my king, lover, baby maker, best friend and ministerial shepherd. I AM BOLD AND FEARLESS WOMAN MAGAZINE

KINGDOM WOMEN IN MINISTRY

Over the years, I have learned to adapt to a hectic lifestyle, understanding that if I don’t have a plan, the things in my life that need to grow will suffer and die. Balance is critical to me, and I have learned that if I am not well both mentally and emotionally, my life will be completely off. So, operating with a balance mindset allows me the ease to flow in life. One of the major challenges I face as a pastor is bringing people to a place of a changed mindset. I have to skillfully package the truth which can be easily rejected, in such a way that people can take the courage they need to rise up and live to their truest potential. Walking through the process with them and seeing them desiring to give up and settle, but letting them know that they can’t, because there is a better life on the other side. The Word of God says, “Be ye an example of the believer” and my aim is to be a living testimony of the Word. As a teacher, I believe I must not only speak life; I must be the example of the life I preach. So, “do as you see me do more than you do as you hear me say” is one principle that makes me accountable to others and myself, as I prove that we can live a life that reflects all that God has said that we can be. I want to tell women that with all that life throws at us, and the public battles we often have to fight silently, do not lose who you are in the mist of it all. Stay true to you, and the uniqueness of your person. Never be in competition with anybody. And, always seek after the truth that is screaming in your heart; the finding of that truth is God leading you to be free to live. My greatest reward and fondest memories are of the many times I have used my God-given gifts to serve people and seeing the changes it has brought about in their lives. Seeing the devil defeated, and God being glorified as He brings people to the life He has called them to.

I like to think that my superpower is my authenticity. Somebody said to me recently, “Girl, you are real, real.” Like everyone else, I have days when I feel like a hot mess express Have you ever spent a lot of time planning and that’s okay. I think that when people see something and feeling confident about how it that leaders don’t have it all together all the would unfold, but as you began to execute the time, and we’re daily reliant on God’s grace plan, things suddenly veered in a different and forgiveness like everyone else; we’re more direction? Have you felt like the deer in the relatable. It helps to foster more genuine headlights, “Wait ... What ,.. How … But... connections, and that’s what I want. I thought …” I like to say that I am becoming. I have not That was how I felt about the call to serve as arrived, but I am enjoying the journey of a pastor; it was definitely not the plan. I was becoming the woman that God created me to supposed to be the Pastor’s wife, cheerleader be. I am intentional about transformation for and administrator, and I knew I would rock the me and for others. Transformation always role. So, imagine my confusion when I heard comes with pain. Even Jesus learned the call of God for me to serve alongside my obedience by the things he suffered. But by husband as a pastor too. “Wait ... Say what yielding every pain to the Father, we can pivot now, Lord?” from pain to praise to purpose. But, the call was as clear as it was frightening. Some people embrace change, but I find change scary. However, once I take the plunge, I’m all in. So, although pastoring is not the path I would have chosen for myself, I chose to be obedient. Unfortunately, the title of Pastor is a little intimidating to some. People feel they have to be on their Ps and Qs. I see faces instantly morph, and eyes become guarded when people learn that Denielle is really Pastor Denielle. For some reason, the title makes people think twice about what they say. But, the word ‘Pastor’ is just a title; it is not an identity. I am simply Denielle. As a counselor before embracing the role of pastor, I was accustomed to people freely gravitating and opening up to me, so these defenses were a challenge. Thankfully, people quickly learn that I don’t fit the pastor stereotype anyway.

As a pastor, coach, writer, counselor, founder of The Priceless Foundation for Women and co-owner of Safe Place Family Life Enrichment Centre Ltd, helping people through their transformation brings me immense satisfaction. I am grateful for the opportunity to partner with God and his children and see them reach their full potential. Don’t get it twisted though, sometimes the emotional weight of this vocation is heavy. But, I have learnt to be intentional about what I do. I give one hundred percent to my work when I’m in work mode. And when I’m in wife and mama bear mode, I’m fully there too. Learning how to say “no” without feeling guilty changed my life. Ladies, you need to try it; you cannot be everything to everybody at all times. My message to my sisters on this International Women’s Day is this: “Don’t try to fit in someone else’s shoes; rock your own shoes. There is power in simply being you. Don’t compete. Don’t compare. Don’t complain. Just complete the mission God gave you with courage, boldness and in your unique style.” 09

My name is Patrina St. Hill, and I am reminded of 1 Timothy 4:12 many times in my Christian journey. I am a wife, mother, pastor, and entrepreneur. If anyone had told me this is where I would be in 2022, I would have jokingly dismissed him. I was baptized at the age of 13, but I gave my life to the Lord at the age of 22 and I have never turned back. My calling into ministry began about a month after I surrendered to God at a church’s convention service. I had a budding feeling on the inside that God had called me into ministry, but I was somewhat frustrated with the nagging in my spirit. Eventually, I told God to give me a sign and let me know it was Him. Around that time, I saw an announcement for a leadership course, and immediately, I knew it was my next assignment. I spent two years at the Church of God Leadership Institute in Barbados before going off to the Caribbean Nazarene College in Trinidad. Throughout those years of studying, God accelerated me spiritually with the experiences I had. After my graduation in 2019, there was a nagging in my spirit again for my next assignment. This time, it was to go fulltime into pastoral ministry. For me, it was a struggle. My daughter was just 7 months old, my husband had a very demanding job, and here was God telling me it was time to step up and launch out into the new direction He wanted to take me. After much prayer with my husband, I assumed the position of Pastor of the Rock Hall, Church of the Nazarene. It has been 2 years of being in this position, and I am extremely grateful to God for using me mightily as I shepherd them.

One of my favourite statements is, “God calls you beyond the capacity of your resources.” I say this because whenever you are given an assignment, where you are now will not look like where God is going to take you. The thing is, you must trust Him because dwelling and operating at Kingdom capacity requires you to have a serious dependency on God.

KINGDOM WOMEN IN MINISTRY

patrina st. hill Additionally, I am grateful for the persons God has placed in my life because this is a journey that needs to be soaked in prayer continually. My husband is one who continually bears me up in prayer no matter what comes our way. That you are a pastor doesn’t mean you don’t need prayer, it means you need more prayers because once the devil has access to the head, he can control the entire body. I want to encourage you Women of God not to limit yourself. I am one of the youngest pastors within the Church of the Nazarene, Barbados District. Despite being told this may not be what God has called me to do, I followed the guidance of the Holy Spirit and indeed I am walking in the purpose ordained for me. There will be people saying to you that the thing God has called you to do isn’t for you, but you need to understand and believe God’s Word over your life. You are a winning woman; you are strong, you are worthy, and you are capable. Step out, launch out, and do all that God has ordained for your life.

Shakera Trotman-Chase is the wife of Apostle Leon Chase, mother, entrepreneur, women’s president, founder of The Prayer EmpowHerment Move, and motivational speaker. Apostle and I have been married for 11 years and have been pastoring together for the past 8 years. My journey has been a bittersweet one; bittersweet in the sense that when I started my journey, I was young and I loved God with my everything. But at that stage of my life, I was just experiencing God for myself. I was told He is good, and he could do great things, but I needed to experience His goodness for myself. I always knew I had a calling on my life, but I didn't feel like I was qualified. I battled a lot initially with the opinions of man; what people thought of me, in terms of not having a title, my attire, not attending a Theology school, being pregnant while in church, and the big one—'Would I be accepted for who I was?' Most of it stemmed from who I was as an individual; shy, quiet, conservative etc. One of my daily cries at that time was, "Why me?" And God responded, "Why not you?" And over the years, I have seen God mold and transform me into the woman that I am today —relentless, resilient, and resourceful. Juggling the various roles in my life has not been easy, but I can say God has truly placed a grace on my life that helps to make the load easier. Many times, I have felt like throwing in the towel, but I remained rooted and grounded in God’s Word which helped me to bounce back.' Some of the challenges I faced as a wife in ministry was dealing with criticisms of my husband.

I AM BOLD AND FEARLESS WOMAN MAGAZINE

My husband loves wholeheartedly, so to hear distasteful things being said from people he helped, made me cringe, but I have learned to fight my battles on my knees. In trusting others, I have learned that people show a good face and talk a good game but their actions might not always align with their words.

KINGDOM WOMEN IN MINISTRY

shakera trotman-chase Some of the pros of being a wife in ministry are networking, being able to connect with other godly women and form great relationships. Others include mentoring people, motivating others, and being able to influence and impact lives in a positive way. Some cons of being a wife in ministry are experiencing emotional and physical burnout. Ministry time does not just begin and end on Sunday for me, as some may believe. Managing our home, being a counselor and comforter to people who come for counsel, even in my weakest times can be overwhelming at times. Making countless sacrifices, giving up date nights, family nights, and having sleepless nights to ensure that God’s people are taken care of. Being in the spotlight, and constantly being monitored can be stressful; even with some of the simplest things that you are judged you on. Giving so freely of myself to assist others and then having to go through betrayal and disappointment. My message to women on this International Women's Day is Women, Let’s Arise! #WomanUp. God’s blueprint for your life is far greater than any label society has placed on you. My greatest reward and one of the greatest joys of being a Wife in Ministry is being a part of the spiritual growth of others. Women’s ministry has always been my passion, and seeing women thrive, empowered, and edified truly warms my heart. Knowing that I can impact the lives of others by helping women discover and walk in their purpose has and will always make the trials and countless sacrifices worth it. 11

Truth be told, I love online teaching. It took some adjustments, and a huge investment in terms of time and upskilling to learn how to operate the learning management system, but I have been able to adapt well to the online environment. It has its pros, however, this does not mean that social skill development and practical/ psychomotor skill development are not threatened by virtual learning. What I have observed is that as a result of the pandemic, there is a greater understanding from parents through the difficulties that they have personally experienced as their child/ward tried to navigate the virtual classroom. I have seen the increase in social support and mental health management through this pandemic. Areas that have often been glossed over were brought to the forefront. I have seen a greater understanding of the economic disparity that affects the academic learning of students and witnessed the effort to bridge that gap. I have seen students grapple with the loss of loved ones, their own sickness as well as the sickness of others and still have a resilient spirit. While in other cases, I have seen students who need the emotional and social support to be encouraged that things will not always be this difficult or hard. I have seen growth and development ,but I have also seen persons giving up and letting go.

WHO IS SHANAE? I am Shanae Beckles; an introspective, service-oriented, understanding, and helpful professional. I am observant, yet I was very timid and sometimes even terrified to speak. As a child, being mannerly was expected where you say 'good morning', 'good afternoon' or 'good evening' to adults, but I was often reproved for not speaking. My response was “I did speak, but they just didn’t hear me.”

HOW DID YOU BECOME A TEACHER? It became a matter of concern to me such that I would time eye contact to make sure adults were looking at me when I said 'good morning' or 'good evening' to them. I did so because speaking to others caused me great anxiety. A school meals server at my primary school once exclaimed, “You are a teacher? Well, you never say a word,” and I simply smiled. It wasn’t always my passion to speak into the lives of students; it is something I became good at—explaining, demonstrating, coming alongside the student—through practice. It became easier when I understood that I could make a topic simple to understand for others. I didn’t always want to be a teacher, but I took time to analyze what I was good at and based on my strengths, teaching fell in third place for my possible career choices. Today I am extremely grateful and humbled to be a teacher.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A TEACHER? Honestly, being a teacher is more than explaining subject content. I believe it encompasses being empathetic, showing understanding of others and bringing each student to a place where they not only feel understood but also want to engage in their own personal development.

My students normally do lots of movement in my classroom and engage in activities like puppetry, drama, role-play and gaming to reinforce the concepts I instruct. I mostly like to hear my students speak about, explain and expunge, talk, discuss all their knowledge or how they applied whatever concept I have taught them to their daily lives.

I am Lisa Lashley; a woman, mother, educator, friend and mentor to those who need a little inspiration. I am a beacon to guide them, and a kind whisper of love. I celebrate all women who are all of the above and more.

Though there were some challenges at first with our new ‘school’ environment, both my students and I have quickly learned to adapt to the many changes and continue on happily with our scholastic successes. In fact, I am so proud to shout out to the world that Lisa Lashley has not only been promoted from “Selfie Goddess” but she is now a “Tik Tok Boss” because of my students. I taught to master several Google classroom applications and activities online, and I have learnt to be socially savvy with several social media apps that they introduced to me. I love it!

As a teacher of 26 years, I have encountered many students from all walks of life and they have all left lasting impressions on me. I strongly believe in grooming independent, wholistic students who readily transfer the knowledge attained in my classroom into their everyday lives. With this in mind, I love to engage all students in authentic learning experiences where they use critical life skills and problem-solving skills to make better sense of the world around them independently. Although I value the cognitive attainment of education and understand that it is basically the ideal goal of the education system for all my students, the connections I have made with many of them on the spiritual and emotional spheres of their development is sometimes more rewarding than anything else. I love to encourage them to participate in co-curricular activities to reinforce critical social and civic values that I know will build their character, positive attitudes, behaviors and work ethics.

That in my mind is what education is all about. Learning from each other, even in the most adverse situations or environments. It is my belief that the transition back to the physical classroom will not be difficult for many of my students because they understand that learning takes place everywhere and with every experience they get whether inside or outside the classroom. This includes living with and accepting all our new norms of the COVID-19 restrictions, protocols and safety measures. They do understand that what they did in the months or years that have passed cannot apply now. and they must learn to live well and cautiously in this new environment. I always impress upon them to place God first and foremost in protecting all of us, and I know that He alone will give me the strength to continue moulding, teaching and guiding them the correct way. After all, I am a godly woman.

Interactive is the word that describes a typical day in my classroom, even in this new online classroom platform due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Whether face to face in the physical classroom or online, it is never a sitdown, teacher-centered environment where students just regurgitate what is taught to them.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A TEACHER? I think teaching is service. There are so many things that my students may require from me that are not in my job description, but as a teacher, I give it to them willingly because it is what they need. Teaching is also holistic. A teacher is not only concerned with the academic development of the student, but his or her all-round development as a human being. As teachers, we want our students to become well-rounded people who are able to make use of their skills, showcase their talents, and do what they love to do.

WHO IS LEAH? I am a 28-year-old Christian; a wife, sister, daughter, and educator.

HOW DID YOU BECOME A TEACHER? Education is my passion and purpose. I believe that God has gifted me with the skills, techniques and talent to be an excellent teacher. I would say I was born to teach, and I got better at teaching through training and experience. I have been teaching for about 5 years, but teaching within the education system for 3 years.

WHAT ARE THE PROS AND CONS OF TEACHING? In my opinion, one of the biggest pros of being a teacher is the connection and relationships you cultivate. Every school year, I get to meet new personalities and new expressions of talents in my students. This is something I look forward to every year.

HOW HAS THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC IMPACTED YOUR TEACHING? This is a loaded question. COVID-19 has had a tremendous impact on teaching and teachers. As a nursery school teacher, I teach children from ages 3 to 4. At that age, some of the most useful things they learn are not academic; they are social and emotional. Examples of these include how to interact with others, how to make friends and build friendships, how to understand societal norms and structures etc. These things cannot be taught via Google classroom; they have to be experienced in the classroom. Therefore, although we now have a measure of academic normalcy via online measures, COVID has limited our ability to develop wellrounded students.

Concerning the cons of teaching, I cannot confidently say that teachers are well appreciated. Over the years the appreciation has grown, but I believe there is still a long way to go.

IS THERE ANYTHING ABOUT THE EDUCATION SYSTEM YOU WOULD LIKE TO CHANGE? I think the education system is too heavily focused on academics. When we structure the system in such a way, we imply to children that a good student is one who scores high in testing, and we neglect who they are as human beings.

All-in-all the the experience in this season has been pleasant. All of the parents I worked with during the pandemic were very understanding of the situation. They prioritized the safety of their children and were open to doing the best for them. During the pandemic, some parents were unable to get their children on to the virtual classroom, and we tried to make adjustments to accommodate them.

janelle knight Coming from a family where both parents were teachers, it is safe to say that teaching has always been in my blood. And at fortytwo years old, I can definitely say that I am still evolving into my predestined role of being a teacher. For me, teaching is a passion and coupled with mentorship, it is a calling. I believe that bound up in every child is the potential for greatness, and my role is to facilitate that display of greatness.

This should not just be in theory but in ways in which students can be exposed to simulations and real world experiences. After all, this is the digital age, and our students seem to come from the womb technologically savvy. Having been a teacher for over sixteen years, I am passionate about seeing students engaged in such activities and would love the opportunity to deliver that type of content to them. Being a mother and a teacher is quite challenging at times. Teachers generally never stop working, so I realized early on that I did not want a situation where I brought my work home to the point where my daughter was neglected. She is my star, and I make sure that I spend quality time with her daily. As a mother, I had to learn how to turn off the ‘teacher’ in me and turn on the ‘mummy’ at the close of work. At times, it is difficult to do but because I know she must always get the best of me, I do it.

Teaching over the years has changed; it is no longer about just lesson delivery. It has now become an intricate interplay of parts where teachers become the ultimate craftsmen. We have to be father, mother, doctor, psychologist and any other form of relationship expert that our students need. This has not been made easier with the occurrence of the COVID-19 pandemic. With it, we were thrust into an era where we have become digital connoisseurs as well. It called for a change in how we operated―even in how we related with our students’ parents. They became our eyes and ears as the home became the classroom. It became critical that the relationship between the teacher and the parent become a strong and committed one.

MESSAGE TO WOMEN ON THIS INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY? My message to women on this Women’s International Day, is to start believing in their abilities. Belief is the catalyst that will help them achieve their goals. But, belief without action will cause stagnation. Our girls need examples of women who are strong and passionate, and I implore you to be that woman today.

As we move into another phase of education, it is my belief that our system as we know it needs an upgrade. Focus must now be placed on ensuring that our students evolve into critical thinkers. It is high time that topics such as financial planning, digital investing and entrepreneurship are taught to learners from the primary level.

Happy International Women’s Day, ladies! I am ecstatic that I have the opportunity to share with you on a day like this where millions of women all over the world are celebrating a myriad of achievements and lessons learnt. I am Kellyann Trotman-Clarke; a wife, mother, teacher, author, worship minister, entrepreneur, and digital investor. Being an educator is the first profession I embarked upon, and it continues to be one passion of mine out of several others. I have been a teacher for the past seventeen years, and I absolutely love my job. Throughout my career, I have learnt and relearnt several lessons. I have developed as a leader having studied for my Bachelors degree in Linguistics, Diploma in Education, as well as a Masters degree in Educational Administration. I have been part of my school’s management team where I worked with wonderful teachers, planning and strategizing for the nation’s youth. In that capacity as a leader, I learnt patience, endurance and compassion; because situations arise so often in a school setting that are unique and unheard of in other professions. For me, teaching is not only a profession; it is indeed a calling. There are so many facets attached to an individual being a teacher that one must be able to embrace all if he or she intends to be effective in the profession. In my days as a young lady, I was impacted by one teacher in particular, who knew how to draw the potential out of his students. He was creative and assisted in developing the creative, academic and spiritual side of me.

I AM BOLD AND FEARLESS WOMAN MAGAZINE

In my eyes, I wanted to be like him and contribute to society in a way that would assist in developing positive leaders in society. Whether we like it or even agree with it; teachers have the most significant impact on the lives of individuals. We spend many hours with young people daily, and we have the ability to influence their behaviors. Yes, teaching is a tough job, but it is also a rewarding one.

Like any other profession, there would be things we love and then things we would really like to see changed or revamped. Our environment is not static and things change within the twinkling of an eye. The past two years have been the most challenging times in the life of any educator. We have seen ourselves work longer hours outside of the classroom, because our preparation time has significantly increased. Planning for school has taken on a new face, and we have found ourselves having to make focused efforts to separate our school day and home life. We have had to learn how to balance educating students and also assisting our own children in their school environment which happens to be our homes. It has been challenging, and I met some wonderful parents during the pandemic who desperately wanted the best help they could get for their children. It has been an uphill climb, but we are determined to forge ahead to achieve the results as willed by the Holy Spirit, for our help comes from Him. On this day, I wish to say to you, ladies, “Keep pressing on, and do not give up because the birth of a ‘new …’ depends on us.” I once heard a speaker say, “never stop driving your car in the storm because if you stop, you stay in that storm. Keep driving, and that storm will come to an end.” We are wired and created to make, nurture, birth and bring forth what is on the inside. We are women! We are ladies! We are leaders!

walthrust jones The Future of Black Women in Higher Education

In this article, the author seeks to provide a snapshot of Black women’s participation in academics. As a Black female faculty member at the Barbados Community College, the author profoundly understands the achievements and challenges facing women of color in higher education alongside their male counterparts. There is a growing presence of Black women at the Barbados Community College, Erdiston Teachers’ Training College, Samuel Jackman Prescod Institute and the University of the West Indies (Cave Hill Campus), as students, instructors, tutors, lecturers and administrators. And, it is changing the academic, social and cultural landscape of higher education as we continue to thrive for global citizens in the 21st century. Here in Barbados, Black women of all ages face a burdensome number of challenges as they attempt to circumnavigate the taxing world of academia. This is seen from primary school to higher education, and we are painfully aware that some will face many facets of discrimination, gender bias and everyday microaggressions from their peers, faculty and administrators. This knowledge is overwhelming to Black women scholars’ confidence and is a weight Black women must carry as they seek academic growth. Research that focuses on the experiences of Black women in academia continues to be encouraging. This line of inquiry can provide insights into the obstacles and trials they have faced as students and scholars. Furthermore, looking to the critical principles of black feminist thought as an avenue to structure the discourse on Black women’s experiences in higher education is quite helpful. It is equal in the domestic, regional and international spaces. In examining Patricia Hill Collins’ (1986) theorizing, it augmented her paradigm of Learning from the Outsider Within with a discussion of how an “outsider-within” status is an important starting point in inspiring Black women and changing the activity and levels in academia. I AM BOLD AND FEARLESS WOMAN MAGAZINE

Collins suggests that Black women can incorporate the “creative potential of their outsider-within status and use it wisely. In doing so, they move themselves and their disciplines closer to the humanist vision implicit in their work, namely: the freedom both to be different and part of the solidarity of humanity” (p. S30). While some Black women still live in a marginalized, “outsider-within” status, they bring a multitude of diverse perspectives, talents, and ideologies to the academic classroom and workplace. Benjamin (1997), expounded that Black women’s role in participating in higher education is grounded within a matricentric tradition of inclusiveness, empowerment, and advocacy. Therefore, the legacy of the black feminist tradition continues to influence current and future generations of Black female students and scholars. This has been concretized with the successes of women in Barbados. We have seen the Barbados Community headed successfully by Black female administrators in the role of Principal, starting with Mrs. Norma Holder and now, Ms. Annette Alleyne. Mrs. Grace Thompson was the first Registrar, and Mrs. Diane Medford was the Assistant Registrar, Student Affairs, to name a few. At the Cave Hill Campus, we saw Ms. Eudine Barriteau become the first female Principal. Moreover, the continued growth of Black women at all levels of higher education enhances its significance to all aspects of academic life. As more Black women enter the educational institutions in their quest for higher education, hopefully, fewer will be forced into the “outsider-within” category. References: Benjamin, L. (Ed.) (1997). WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A TEACHER? Being a teacher means that I have an opportunity to make a lasting positive impact on the lives of my students.

WHO IS NATALIE? Natalie Whitehall is a dedicated and persistent optimist who is spontaneous and helpful with a heart for supporting others in their journey to lifelong learning. I have been teaching for 10 years.

WHAT ARE THE PROS AND CONS OF TEACHING? Teaching allows me to nurture students who otherwise would not have a depth of positive parental influence and support in their lives. It also allows me to be an influence for the next generation of my nation’s future leaders and citizens as a whole. On the contrary, there is not enough support for the emotional and spiritual development of children in recent times. Children have become so hyper focused on technology particularly through social media for reasons that have little to do with their academic development. This has proven to be quite a challenge in grabbing and keeping their attention in the classroom and thus impacts on the quality of the work they produce.

HOW DID YOU BECOME A TEACHER? Teaching is one of my passions; particularly teaching how children learn and showing them how to improve on their language learning techniques. However, my personal and deepest passion is working on my growth in my relationship with God. I had always been teaching since the earliest time of my conversion and re-commitment to Christ. I had been heavily involved in the children’s ministry of my church and gleaned a lot of my skills from participating and leading in various divisions such as Children’s Sabbath School and other special children’s programmes. So naturally, after completing my studies at UWI, Cave Hill Campus in French with a speciality in Linguistics, I wanted to continue working on what I had also learned about language acquisition through Modern Language Education, in my role as a teacher.

IS THERE ANYTHING ABOUT THE EDUCATION SYSTEM YOU WOULD LIKE TO CHANGE? I would like to see a return to Civics and Religious Education in schools. I believe the removal of these subjects is a likely contributing factor to the decline in the overall morality in society especially at the familial level. The current deficit in discipline and disregard for authority are demonstrative of the need for these subjects to be taught in schools again.

HOW HAS THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC IMPACTED YOUR TEACHING? The pandemic has forced me to rethink and reinvent the methods I use to engage my students now that platforms for learning and teaching have also been taken online. It has caused me to implement novel tools that can be utilized to ensure that students maintain their academic progress, even though it is physically and psychologically taxing to be constantly in front of the computer and not moving around and participating in the regular happenings of school life. However, it made me more aware of my own capacity to be sufficiently resourceful and adapt to dynamic changes. I AM BOLD AND FEARLESS WOMAN MAGAZINE

I am Pearl-Ann Bartlett, and I’ve been an award winning studio owner and full-time creative entrepreneur for 12 years. I am a wife, new mom, CEO of Pearls Dance Academy, a dance studio consultant and an American Ballet Theater National Training Curriculum Fellow.

Refilling allows me to assess and overcome challenges that I face, like becoming fixated on planning for my business rather than tracking what’s actually happening in it. I am a planner at heart, and this gets the best of me sometimes. I get so excited about the plans and dreams for my businesses that I become addicted to the excitement of the plans to the extent that I neglect the important work of tracking those plans.

I started my studio business out of a desire to use my gift of dance and teaching to serve students who are eager to learn. Over the years, what started as a small desire, turned into a dream to see dance represented as a viable career path and not just a hobby. This is the crux of why I do what I do as a female entrepreneur within the dance industry. To couple this mission, I began my consultant journey in 2020 where I specialize in helping studio owners implement accredited curriculums in alignment with their studio culture.

You see, tracking my business also puts me in a position to determine if I am in alignment with my purpose, brand promise, and the impact I am seeking to make through my businesses. I say this because I am a firm believer that I was placed on the earth with an assignment to impact others with my gift. Therefore, when I operate in alignment with that purpose, then I automatically distinguish my businesses from others.

One would think that these are a lot of responsibilities, and you may wonder how I manage my home, perform my duties as a mindful wife, be a great mom to my beautiful baby girl who is nursing around the clock and still be the CEO of my businesses. Well, I find peace in self-care because I have learned that prioritizing self-care is the key to juggling my various roles. I believe that when I pour from a full cup, I show up as my best self and can therefore serve from a place of strength and authenticity. Living a balanced life through connecting with God, my family, church and scenic rides around my island Barbados, along with journaling and having consistent sessions with my life coach, fills me up.

In fact, I would encourage women on this International Women’s Day, to own their purpose and live from that place because when they do, competition or comparison becomes null and void. As a business woman, make the scary decision to completely eliminate distractions from looking around at other businesses in your niche. Focus on the identity of your business and ask yourself if your business is operating at its truest potential, and maximizing its values. It’s a privilege to celebrate with fellow female entrepreneurs around the world on this International Women’s Day.

WHAT WAS YOUR JOURNEY OF BECOMING A PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT COACH

HOW DOES YOUR BUSINESS RELATE TO YOUR LIFE OR PERSONAL EXPERIENCES?

This journey has been like a ride on a roller coaster. I have had good experiences and challenging times, but I like to think the journey is equally as important as the destination. Whenever I encounter a roadblock, I view it as a stepping stone, and I continue to take steps to achieve the goal. When I feel overwhelmed, I remind myself of why I started and continue working.

Most people view restoration as going back to who they were before pain occurred in their lives. In my experience, when God restores you, He restores you to His original purpose and plans for your life and not who you were before you experienced challenges or pain. Through revelation, I understand that restoration is reverting to who God created you to be.

Many days, my body would not want to cooperate, but God was my number one cheerleader. Each day, He pushed me beyond my limits until my body became stronger. Eventually, others who viewed my journey on social media asked whether they could join me in my pursuit of better health. Thus, I became the unofficial coach of my friendship circle. Subsequently, CeCe Fitness was born.

My name is Cherise Cave, and I am a 29year-old child of the Most High King. I stand for what my Father in heaven stands for; excellence. I believe that being made in the image of an excellent God, I am required to produce nothing less.

While running these two businesses, outsourcing graphics became increasingly difficult. Therefore as the mature folk would say, I tried to "help myself” by downloading free software to create the images I wanted to represent my businesses. Eventually, others asked me to do the same for them. Each time, I received a new request, it challenged me further to attempt things I never even imagined I’d do. Then, I began to walk with other entrepreneurs through the same journey that I faced. CeCe Graphic Solutions came to fruition as a result of that experience.

By God's grace and appointment, I am the Founder and Managing Director of the CeCe Enterprise, which currently houses CeCe Blendz, CeCe Fitness and the very recently launched CeCe Graphic Solutions. Each business has its own character due to the experiences that led to the creation of each. This trifecta was birthed from a place of need or struggle. After being diagnosed with the hormonal condition PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) in 2016, my health was greatly challenged in ways I had never experienced before. Many days I was so sick that I was unable to do much and on other days, I was not able to do anything at all. Throughout that journey, I also experienced bouts of depression, which naturally contributed to my loss of appetite. Still requiring daily nutrients, I was inspired to begin drinking my meals. However, I knew that for me to comfortably consume those "drinks," the taste needed to be exceptional. I, therefore, began to experiment with cereals and foods that I enjoyed from childhood.

My greatest challenge was never for others to see my worth, it was the ability to see my own. It is important that we agree with God’s valuation of us in the marketplace and daily I’m still learning to agree and accept all that He has said. The CeCe brand is unique because God built it Himself. Dream, but don't just dream. Dream BIG and believe that God can do it. God can want the greatest things for you, but you have to believe that He has given you all the attributes you require to achieve them. The beautiful thing is that even if you don't yet have them, He will equip you with them as you work. You simply need to begin. Ask Moses, he will tell you.

What I never bargained for however was the day that He'd tell me to exercise. Being a former martial artist, exercise was not new to me, but at first, it was very difficult.

I doubted myself and thought that I wasn't good enough and couldn’t be anything because of what I was told. But, I had an encounter with God, and he changed all of that. So, I yearned to know more about God and I found it all through His Word. I now know who I am and what God says about me. WHAT DO YOU WANT PEOPLE TO KNOW ABOUT BUILDING A KINGDOM BUSINESS? Partner with God. Once you have a kingdom business, God is the CEO and He owns the business, so whatever decision you make, you must consult Him first. As leaders, we can activate the full power of prayer to transform lives and our businesses by incorporating prayer into our regular operations and inviting others to join us. The workplace can be a battlefield and without prayer you will be trying to fight a war in your own strength. Something God never expects us to do. We cannot isolate our connection with God from our connection with His people. As kingdom entrepreneurs, we are called to equip the people that work in our businesses, and this can be done through corporate prayer.

WHAT IS YOUR MESSAGE TO WOMEN ON THIS WOMEN'S INTERNATIONAL DAY? To all my kingdom queens out there; in John 2:5 Mary said to the servants, “Whatsoever He saith unto you, do it.” Today, I will tell you the same. Those goals, the dreams and vision you have set, “Do it”. Stop procrastinating and stop worrying about resources or what others may or may not say, just take the step in faith, and God will do the rest. 25

WHO IS DANICE? From a very young age, I was either loud or quiet. I was also very inquisitive, a deep thinker, and a big dreamer. Today, I’m a 27-year-old fiancé to a phenomenal man, a natural hairstylist, salon owner, coach and philanthropist. I’m deeply passionate about helping women and young girls realize and actualize their highest power and potential.

I am happy and grateful now that Project Hair 2 Soul is a multiple location household name in natural hair styling and hair care products. Through SOULocs Academy, we’re changing women through their Head, Heart and Hand. My core values are Integrity, valuing people and good work ethics

HOW DO YOU JUGGLE THE ROLES IN YOUR LIFE AS A WOMAN?

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN BUSINESS?

I have a schedule. I have spent and continue to spend a lot of time thinking about and developing into the woman I want to be. Being clear on this makes the activities I need to do very clear. I roster my activities and ensure that I follow them with discipline. I also ask for help; I’m never afraid to do that. Then, I pray for and align myself with individuals who help me manifest the dream and vision I have for my life. Lastly, I act immediately, I hear God’s voice. Delayed obedience is disobedience, and it will delay your success.

I birthed my first business, Project Hair 2 Soul at 19 years old, providing natural hair services for women. It led me to get an international certification in Sisterlocks®️. Project Hair 2 Soul Inc. started because I saw the struggle and heard stories of what black women in Barbados experienced when it came to styling their hair in professional and fashionable ways. In 2021, I opened my first salon after running a home-based hair service business for seven years. It was a long-term dream of mine. A few months later, I officially became an educator when I launched SOULocs®️ and SOULocs Academy; an institution for women who desire to learn a new skill, open their own businesses and grow as entrepreneurs. I should have known that this would be my field having being so close to “Vernice Herbert,” my mother who is also a Salon owner and Educator. I have also started a product line Supernatural Girl, and our first product is a Rosewater-based Moisture Spray infused with six oils.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE CHALLENGES YOU FACE AS AN ENTREPRENEUR AND HOW DO YOU OVERCOME THEM? What I do is task delegation. Initially, I didn’t do this though because I lacked trust that tasks would be executed the way I envisioned them. Then, there was the fear of failing. But, I had to learn to overcome my fears. I also had to learn to rely on systems and not become a slave to my business.

In 2018, I learned to invest in the foreign exchange market and co-founded the largest female investment movement in the Caribbeans; She Trades. In February 2019, I was awarded a Barbados Youth Award for my commitment to young people through my social enterprise, Supernatural Girls Club. My name is written in history as a Barbados Youth Hero. HOW DO YOU JUGGLE THE ROLES IN YOUR LIFE AS A WOMAN? WHO IS CRYSTAL?

Honestly speaking, I don’t think there is a perfect way that I juggle these roles. I think I have fallen short in some roles, but one of the things I try to do is to be intentional about planning my goals. As a single mother, I ask my family and friends to help me on my motherhood journey, so I don’t have to be the supermom in all areas of her life. I also get accountability from friends for different areas of my life, spirituality and business.

Crystal is a Jesus Girl, mother of Christelle, International Speaker, Kingdom Entrepreneur, Podcaster and Author of nine books. She loves to read, write, travel and cook. She is passionate about empowering women of faith to live wholesome godly lives through her books, speaking, coaching and mentoring sessions.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN BUSINESS?

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE CHALLENGES YOU FACE AS AN ENTREPRENEUR AND HOW DO YOU OVERCOME THEM?

My primary business is Dayelight Publishers; a faith-based publishing and consultancy company where I help new and emerging authors write, publish, market and monetize their books. I launched the company in 2016 and since then, I have worked with over 400 authors to birth the books God has placed on their hearts.

Some of the challenges that I face as an entrepreneur are: I live in the Caribbean which consists of third world countries, so resources are limited compared to a first world country. As women, we struggle personally with insecurities. We sometimes think we are not good enough or experience what is called Imposter’s syndrome. I also experienced issues such as poor money mindset, charging my worth in business and marketing. Finding an ideal audience that is willing to pay for your services. Finding persons that value your expertise and are willing to pay for it, is important. I overcome these challenges by reading relevant books, doing research and investing in courses that broaden my scope of knowledge. I stay on top of marketing and ensure I am always following the trends.

HOW WERE YOU ABLE TO BUILD A FAITHBASED BUSINESS? Building a business has its challenges; whether faith-based or not. But, some of the things I want you to keep in mind when trying to build a successful business are: Ensure your business solves a problem for a specific target group. Understand your unique selling proposition. What is different about what you are adding to the market. Partner with God as Kingdom women to build your business. God wants to be involved in every area of your life. He will supply all your needs. Learn to serve in excellence, not perfection. If you strive for perfection, then you will feel as though you fall short. With these four things in mind and more, you will be equipped to build successful and profitable kingdom businesses.

natkesha WHO IS NATKESHA? I’m a young, confident, ambitious, hard-working, dedicated, trustworthy, and enterprizing individual who is the first born to simple parents―a Police Officer and Entrepreneur. I am very passionate about fashion, and I love to be different. I also love uniqueness and authenticity. I am a child of God, a worshipper, and faith warrior who executes stubborn faith. I have a degree in Accounts and Finance (Honors).

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE CHALLENGES YOU FACE AS AN ENTREPRENEUR AND HOW DO YOU OVERCOME THEM? Some challenges I face as an entrepreneur are: Increasing cost of raw materials for production High fixed and variable operating cost of the store Custom taxes and duties on importation of merchandise Limited parking facilities at the southwestern side of the City. This imposes a challenge in a number of ways since it is an inconvenience for some customers who have vehicles. A reduction in business activity caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. This caused a global ripple effect on all sectors since there were restrictions on social gatherings. Nevertheless, God has kept us and we are still in business.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN BUSINESS? In 2015, as a Business Studies teacher, I decided to further develop myself by learning a skill. After much thought, I enrolled in a Makeup Artistry Course. It wasn’t my intention to take up Makeup Artistry as a career option, however that was how my business, Beauty2NV started. I sold cosmetics, skincare products, and offered beauty services to customers. I fused my business with my mother’s clothing business Moda Per Sempre Boutique (in Italian, it means Fashion Forever Boutique) which is located on Fairchild Street, Bridgetown, Barbados. In 2017, God spoke to me, and I resigned from my job as an educator. God reshaped my purpose and give me a vision, ideas, goals and aspirations. I amalgamated my business with my mother’s business, and we began to work together as one. Together, we joined our finances and we both are winning. My dream became a reality.

Challenges are overcome by the execution of faith and wisdom. God spoke to me, and I had to diversify fast. He refreshed my mind and blessed me with a fresh vision, ideas, tools and strategies. Then, He took me to a different direction which opened new markets and suppliers.

HOW DO YOU JUGGLE THE ROLES IN YOUR LIFE AS A WOMAN? I believe life has to have balance, so I utilize my time wisely since I have a very busy schedule; working long hours from 9a.m – 6p.m (Mondays to Saturdays). This gives me one off day which I set aside for worship. Yet, I still find time to pray/worship, exercise, do chores, run errands, enjoy entertainment and leisure, perform self-care activities, rest and of course spend time with my family and pets. lisa belle Hi, my name is Lisa Belle, and I love it when people are authentically themselves. I am a survivor of domestic violence and an advocate against it. On any given day on my social media platforms, I am motivating and empowering others by sharing my experiences to inspire them that good can come out of bad experiences. I am an active member of The Gender Base Violence Organization in Barbados and was invited to share my survival story on numerous platforms. I also speak and share on domestic violence in primary and secondary throughout Barbados.

My life changed only when I forgave myself for the poor choices I made, and I released the past when I understood that I am fearfully and wonderfully made and that I am a prized possession in the eyes of the heavenly father. I stepped over my hurdles as I discovered that I was responsible for my happiness, that I have worth and that I had to work on myself first. These discoveries made me to change the trajectory of my life by resetting, realigning and refocusing my life. To even attempt to pursue a fulfilled life, I had to chant ‘I am a success story’ daily.

I am the last of eight siblings, and I am a mother who is passionate about living a God-focused and purpose-driven life. I live by the mantra ‘Broken crayons still color.’

Today, I have started to conquer my limiting beliefs as I am currently working on writing my first book, He Kissed My Scars while I continue to share the message of hope.

I endured eight years of abuse at the hands of my ex-husband which came to an end with a near-death experience. I suffered through physical, verbal and mental abuse in silence, because I was too embarrassed and afraid to share with my family and friends and ask for help.

MESSAGE TO WOMEN ON THIS WOMEN'S INTERNATIONAL DAY? My message to all women on Women’s International Day is to get to know yourself first before you share you with someone else. You must understand that all beautiful things sometimes have unique imperfections, so you just need to find the beauty through the cracks, and remember that your deepest, darkest challenges can be the most transformative for your life. It takes rain and sunshine for plants to grow. Last but not the least; master loving yourself so that if counterfeit love comes your way, because you know what genuine love is, you will identify counterfeit love and run away from it. You wouldn't settle for anything less.

On the worst days of my life, I had to pull myself together not just for me but for my son. In those moments, I developed resilience, prayed and pulled from my inner strength. Finding the courage to finally leave the abusive marriage caused me a fractured skull and thirty-seven stab wounds to my neck, face and lower body. I survived the wounds, but was left with a shattered self-esteem and low self-worth.

I am Dr Adele Jones OBE, Emeritus Professor of Social Work at the University of Huddersfield in the United Kingdom and founder of the None in Three Center for the Global Prevention of Gender-based Violence (www.noneinthree.org). I was born in the UK and although also a citizen of Barbados, my name is symbolic of a more complex history. My first name is taken from Ayodele, the shortened version of the Yoruba name given to me in commemoration of the death of an aunt from Sierra Leone. Sierra Leone is also the country of my father’s birth and where I spent much of my childhood. My second name, Jones is a legacy of slavery and was the name of the plantation owner who ‘owned’ my ancestors hundreds of years ago before they were set free in Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone and the place established in 1787 as a base for the suppression of slavery.

My father was a violent and abusive man, and it has been my life’s work to try to understand what fuels violent behavior and what can be done to prevent it. Inspired by my mother’s resilience (you can read her story here: https://www.amazon.co.uk/AllMy-Life-Betty-Jones/dp/1434386228), I established the None in Three Center. Shockingly, one in three women will face physical or sexual violence in their lifetime, but I believe the only acceptable statistic is none in three; hence the centre’s name. Many initiatives tackle gender-based violence, but my research showed that not enough is done to change the attitudes and behaviors that fuel it in the first place. Ni3 engages with those most amenable to change―young people―and creates innovative evidence-based anti-violence video games to use as educational tools to prevent violence in the long-term. Based in the UK at the University of Huddersfield, our researchers and experts are drawn from around the world, and we’ve created educational interventions tackling child marriage, child sexual abuse, on-line sexual exploitation, dating violence and violence against women in the UK, Grenada, Barbados, St Lucia, Jamaica, Uganda, India, and Brazil. Our research has been translated into policy briefs for governments and we have produced hundreds of short films and social media posts earning us several awards (https://www.youtube.com/c/NoneinthreeO rg/playlists).

My early career was as a Social worker although I have spent the last 26 years in academia, including five years at the University of the West Indies in Trinidad. Specializing in international children’s rights, and the prevention of violence against women and children, I have authored numerous publications on topics as varied as child abuse, child welfare, child refugees, gender-based violence and HIV-AIDS. I have directed research in 19 countries, most notable being the Sondai Project on HIV-AIDS in Trinidad and Tobago; the COPING Project (www.copingproject.eu/), a pan-European study of the impact of parental imprisonment on children; a UNICEF study of child sexual abuse in six Caribbean countries, and through awards from the EU, the British government and the UNICEF End Violence Fund, the work to prevent genderbased violence and sexual exploitation has been done.

WOMEN BRINGING ABOUT SOCIAL CHANGE IN SOIETY

That we have achieved much is exemplified by the pronouncement of a school principal from India, which following our work in her school, there was a 90% reduction in self-harming among girls. In 2021, I was recognized in the Queen’s Honors List and awarded an OBE for 40 years of service to “vulnerable women and children”. I am proud of the award, not so much for what it says about me, but for the recognition of the work of my amazing global partners in fighting gender-based violence. See more at this link: https://www.hud.ac.uk/news/2022/february/adele-jones-ni3-center -success/ Violence has been a driver for change in my life but for so many, violence simply stamps out potential and kills dreams. On this International Women’s Day, my message is that even as we celebrate our achievements, we must never forget the women whose lives and achievements are stunted by controlling, coercive and violent behaviour.

LET'S TALK WOMAN TO WOMAN: BULLYING IN THE WORKPLACE

WOMEN BRINGING ABOUT SOCIAL CHANGE IN SOIETY

cecelia

Bullying in the workplace was once viewed by employers as another complaint made by the unpopular, unproductive or emotionally stressed workers. Ironically, the failure to investigate the allegations of bullying has contributed to a reduction of productivity by those involved. A new study by University of the West Indies academic, Dr. Dwayne Devenish, has found that workplace bullying is a problem in Barbados business and needs our most urgent attention (Devenish, 2017). The question should be asked, is bullying a workplace issue? The answer is yes. Bullying in the workplace can be described as repeated inappropriate behaviour, direct and indirect, whether verbal, physical or non-verbal, conducted by one person or group of persons in the workplace, which could be regarded by others as annoying, immature, harassment and unprofessional. ( Dr. Devenish, 2013) Every business, department or ministry has its own organisational culture; the culture of any organisation is set and maintained by the organisation’s leaders. Therefore, it is extremely important that all leaders are aware of their responsibility and accountability for contributing to the building of workplace culture in Barbados. Some work environments are managed by strong leadership, policy, guidelines and regulatory bodies. However, a Laissez-faire leadership style may encourage bullying. Although the environment or structure of the environment may be seen as an underlying factor, its main focus is on the relationship between the employers and employees. The organisational culture therefore sets the standard of values and behaviours that contribute to the unique social and psychological environment of any organisation. The leaders must be held responsible for his/her organisation. Each area of work has its own unique organisational culture which stems from the vision of its leaders, and nothing should supersede the standard rules and regulations of the organisation or ministry. Hence, leaders at all levels within the organisation must be consciously aware of the organisation’s desired culture. Bullying and Health Individuals who are bullied are often consumed by depressed thoughts on how to overcome the immediate challenge of the “office problem.” This emotional distress will decrease productivity as individuals; do not perform at their fullest potential. Bullying also affects the health of individuals; this illness can be a silent killer because they are sometimes undetected signs or it can be the catalyst for a life threatening illness, due to the high levels of stress. For persons who were at one time disheartened and managing it, bullying worsens the condition. Bullying can contribute to mental illness, which will not always be observed immediately, but the long term effects are enormous.

Victimization The feeling of victimisation in the workplace can contribute to physical exhaustion, depression and absenteeism. An act of inequality and discrimination is also categorised as bullying. The challenges come when the manager or supervisor favours certain persons and groups. This is known as favouritism. Workers often developed a sense of disgust or hate for their administrator, as an after effect of bias or bullying by an employee. In this regard bullying does not only affect the health of the victim but can severely affect the income of the employer and the quality input and output of work. In the event that a person is bullied he or she should report the problem orally and also in a written statement. This act can contribute to the individual being ignored, relocated, threatened by employers, demoted or sometimes made redundant. Guidelines in the workplace should focus on a standardisation of these matters. It should be expressed that in cases where these steps to reporting are not taken, it will dilute the seriousness associated with the guidelines of the organisation. Bullying has been challenging problems because of the unnoticeable effects which are difficult to prove by an individual. Bullying is not about verbal or non-verbal cues alone, but includes acts of inequitability and discrimination which can also be seen as the result of this behaviour. This feeling usually arises when general managers, human resource personnel, and the overall management team have a prejudice against certain sectors of workers or groups of individuals. Cyber bullying Cyber bullying has become one of the most undetected offences in the world. Cyber bullying is bullying that takes place over digital devices like cell phones, computers, and tablets. Cyber bullying includes sending, posting, or sharing negative, harmful, false, or mean content about someone. It can include sharing personal or private information about someone causing embarrassment or humiliation. Some cyber bullying crosses the line into unlawful or criminal behaviour. The danger of cyber bullying in the workplace is that it follows you home after work. Most of the time cyber bullying in the workplace is treated as an unimportant matter which is not in need of urgent attention. Unfortunately this claim is untrue and there are documented cases where such bullying has contributed to persons attempting to commit suicide or experiencing extreme depression. This form of harassment should not be tolerated. So, what can I do to have a safe and healthy work environment? Women support you sisters in the fight to STOP harassment in the workplace.

WOMEN IN POLITICS

patricia cox My name is Patricia Cox, and I am the proud mother of two grown sons. My experience and achievements are vast. To name a few, let me say first I am a Christian, and I love God; that is important to me. I am a dancer and choreographer, and a certified dance minister accredited in the United States of America and United Kingdom. I am also a member of Praise Academy of Dance, Barbados and Caribbean School of the Arts for over twenty years. I am a gym instructor and personal trainer, and I have competed locally through the Barbados Amateur Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation. I have earned an Associate Degree in Sport Management from The Barbados Community College, and I have experience in Accounting and Human resource for over twenty-two years combined. One of my latest accomplishments is being an author. I am the author and publisher of the book Whispers which was published in October 2021. Getting involved in politics was something that I usually hinted at to my friends. So, when I was asked in December 2021 when our snap election was called, I asked Him, “God, is this it?” I still wasn’t sure but when everything started to fall into place, I went forward and committed to the decision. From then on, it was an awesome experience and one that I have no regrets whatsoever about. I enjoyed being in the community, talking to the constituents and hearing their concerns. There are so many ideas I had to get help for housing, education and employment especially for the youth in the community, but my only regret is that I didn’t have the kind of platform to get them done. When asked which area I would like to represent, I wanted the City but it was already taken. So, I took the next available constituency only to find out that it’s the same area I had been working in for about two years unofficially. I was already working with some very special ladies, but God just gave me a wider area to work in. I don’t have the monetary resources to fund ventures like food and clothing, but I am in a Whatsapp group and I ask for help there. And, people have been generous; sometimes even giving from their limited supply. What led me into politics? Change. I wanted to see a major change in my country. As a Christian, I knew things weren’t going as God would like and many things weren’t lining up with God’s Word and standards. Many people weren’t happy either and some were scared at what would become of them and Barbados. My family and friends were surprised that I got involved in politics, and some were not pleased. They asked, “Why would you get involved in politics? It’s a dirty game.” My response was, “It is dirty only if you make it dirty.” I wanted to make a difference, and one that would please God. I wasn’t successful this time around, but I’m still in the community checking on my people because I love it and I want to see them happy and working together. I would definitely run again if the opportunity opens up. My message to women on this International Women’s Day is we can do anything we put our minds to and be successful at it. We were created that way. We don’t have to compete with men. We are women, and only we can do us. As a woman, follow your dreams and passions; don’t live life with regrets or be concerned about the past. Put God first in everything and He will order your footsteps. He promises to direct our paths in the right way. I AM BOLD AND FEARLESS WOMAN MAGAZINE

WOMEN IN POLITICS

victorine wilson Victorine Wilson is a lady with strength, empathy, sympathy, and a love for people. I am also a mother, which makes me a natural nurturer. What led me into politics was the need to help people and be part of making decisions to help elevate them. As a qualified social worker, counselor and author, it gives me the opportunity to see and observe firsthand the situations of others that I had never encountered. Canvassing was an experience in itself. It led me to areas that I would not have been exposed to. People are people wherever we go, and everyone in my opinion has their unique personalities. However, some are not being heard and that was expressed to me on many occasions by the constituents. As mentioned, some were favored greatly, while others were left out. The constituents’ concerns impacted me and highlighted that I was on the right track and that I should keep pursuing that which I believe to be advantageous to the people. As a result of the snap election and being a first time candidate, it was difficult to interact with a great number of persons; for them to know of my presence and for me to hear their concerns. Many individuals said, “The candidates didn’t even come around and show their faces, you are the only one we see.” Another experience was one I had with one of the other candidates, Mr. Chris Gibbs who actually had a head start and most of the people spoke well of him. They mentioned how he had been helping them for years; providing food, fixing homes, paying rent, and also providing jobs prior to the elections. These are things people look forward too especially when they find it difficult to provide for their families. Change is good, but some people may beg to differ depending on the situation at hand. Some of the changes I would love to see is more young people becoming entrepreneurs and owning more of Barbados in terms of businesses and land. Another change would be to have more of what people would call the “lower secondary school”. We should have children leaving school with at least three secondary school certificates instead of none. I believe this would give them a start as they leave school to attain more or seek a trade. I believe everyone was born with a purpose and if women have a passion for politics, they should go for it. But, they should be willing to stay the course, because it will not be all bed of roses but a few thrones in-between. Asked If I would run again, yes. I believe there is a place or a position within this arena for me to make a difference in persons’ lives. My message to women on women’s international Day is to be the best that you can be, as a person, as a mother, wife or any nurturing position you may carry. Take care of your bodies and let us fulfill our duties as women that can produce great young men and women to make a healthier Barbados. As I would have mentioned before I am an author. I am the author of the book No longer a Prisoner born to win. It is a pocket book of encouragement, a great read and available on Amazon and for locals it is in the Cloisters Bookstores. If you need to be encouraged, inspired or empowered make this book your personal tool.

Faith Callender is an entertainer and entrepreneur, who was born and raised in Barbados. She is passionate about sharing her talents and skills with the world to not only uplift and inspire people, but to also actively bring about change in their lives. Her journey into the world of entertainment started 8 years ago, during her first year at the University of the West Indies where she studied Accounting and Finance. Realizing that her passion for music was not just a hobby but the dominating thought in her mind, led her to create a career out of it. In that moment, she understood that balancing education and following her dream were of utmost important and through the years, she has added even more roles to her life. They include Songwriter, Forex and Crypto Coach, Fitness Program Facilitator and Promoter, to name a few. Having a tight physical schedule and knowing when to say “no”, keeps it all together for Faith. Faith’s brand has evolved over time, especially within the last 2 years of her career as she dived deeply into personal development, which in turn led to more purpose-driven activities and offerings. Her brand is diverse yet embodies everything she stands for: Fun, Fitness, Finances and Fruition. With belief, an insane work ethic and consistency through these avenues, she is looking forward to positively impacting the lives of women around the world. Faith’s message to you on International Women’s Day is, “Ladies, you can have it all! Family, Financial Freedom, Fit bodies, Fun, Faith in God etc. All your heart's desires can be yours once you have the power to believe. The journey may be a long and challenging one but stay happy in your present, learn from the lessons of your past and continue to speak your future”.
