Queensland Conservatorium Wind Orchestra
The Queensland Conservatorium Wind Orchestra has enjoyed a long history of exciting and definitive performances, as one of Australia’s premier wind, brass and percussion ensembles. Under the baton of Professor Peter Morris, the ensemble continues to evolve within the ever-changing trajectory of this relatively new art form.
This ensemble continually strives to set the benchmark for performance across the nation presenting a vast scope of repertoire from time honoured masterworks to contemporary works from across the globe and innovative new commissions from local Australian composers.
This ensemble’s focus extends far beyond the walls of the QCGU, enriching and supporting the local community of composers, conductors, educators and school students. This development of new repertoire and focus on professional development for all who participate in this evolving art form continues to be an exciting pedagogical focus of the Queensland Conservatorium Wind Orchestra.

Young Conservatorium Wind Orchestra
As one of our premiere ensembles, the Young Conservatorium Wind Orchestra continues to drive the standard of high school wind ensembles in Australia. Under the direction of Stefanie Smith, the ensemble continues to grow musically, through the performance of masterworks, alongside diverse and collaborative repertoire that includes world premieres, exploring new repertoire by local composers, and integrating other art forms into concerts.
Highlights for the Young Conservatorium Wind Orchestra include performances at the International Society for Music Education Conference (2022), in concert with the Conservatorium Wind Orchestra, conducting workshops and relaxed popular music performances. This ensemble continues to contribute to the broader community through participating regularly in workshops, professional development programs, assisting young composers to find their voice for this art form through composer days, and as guest ensemble at events in South-east Queensland. Students from Wind Orchestra and other Young Conservatorium ensembles can provide leadership to our younger ensembles, in addition to being invited to participate in side-by-side events with the tertiary ensembles. We would also like to thank the many teachers who support our program as it continues to grow.

Jesse Jones is an award-winning composer, educator and instrumentalist. His versatile writing style has allowed him to work on a variety of projects having his music played at the Old Museum for QYS’s concert series, the 2022 Winton Film Festival and at Burke Studios for the Griffith Theatre School’s play directed by Kate Wilde, Summerfolk. Recently Jesse was a member of Topology’s Launchpad Program, where he received tutelage from some of Australia’s most renowned composers.
In addition to creating music, Jesse’s passion for education has led him to teach over 20 students through his teaching school, Jesse Jones Music & Lessons, which he maintains alongside his Masters of Music studies. Also an avid performer, Jesse is a member of a Brisbane-based cover band, performing regularly for private functions and events. To follow Jesse’s musical journey and to keep up date, visit jessejonesmusic.com.
Jesse graduated in 2022 with a Bachelor of Music in Composition from the Queensland Conservatorium, winning the coveted Silver Harris composition award, for which ‘Dances of the Wild’ was commissioned, and is premiered tonight. We would like to thank Silver Harris for her kind and ongoing support of this annual prize.
