lNNostalgia is the first movement of a piece in a broader project inspired by my love for Film and Video Game music. In particular, the way that motifs can be manipulated to form different moods. Reflective of the name, in this movement, I have manipulated motifs developed for the broader project to create a nostalgic mood. Exploring a mixture of warm and yearning moods, it culminates in a sombre mood that anticipates the following movement, focused on tragedy.

This singular line etude written for bass trombone came about from when I started playing trombone myself and wanted to experiment writing for it. I was inspired by many different orchestral excerpts for the instruments such as “Fountains of Rome (Trevi Fountain) at Midday” , Rossini's “Stabat Mater” and movie scores such as “Aladdin Symphonic Suite” and “How to Train Your Dragon” . At the foot of an imaginary mountain, there lies an imaginary village by the name of Ashmore. A great tradition in Ashmore is for the townspeople to gather in the village square and listen to the great belfry of the village where its bells toll and chime daily. In times of darkness, when all seemed lost, the people would listen to the belfry and gain hope through her great bells. It is now once again time for the belfry to ring and bring hope to all the townspeople that hear her great chimes.

This piece from a collection of (soon to be) three movements, is intended to express the intense emotion of longing. The journey of emotions that an individual goes through when they want something to such an extent is represented in the constant driving offbeat piano cluster chords, a motif of life / time never stopping, along with the strings portraying the individual’ s desires and thoughts.

This composition is an episodic journey of recurring patterns and textures, inspired by Far Eastern percussion. Driving ostinatos alternate with moments of stillness and reflection, culminating in an exciting conclusion. This piano duet explores a range of sonorities, from sparse lines to dense textures, evoking bells and gongs across the instrument’ s full range.
