Women; an annual observance to raise awareness for Heart Disease, the number one killer of women. We pride ourselves on being more than just fashion, we like to bring you articles that everyone can relate to and learn from. In every issue, I must take the time to thank you

Valentine’s Romance

Are you wanting to have a romantic Valentine’s Day but don’t feel like going out to eat this year? Do you prefer to stay in and cook a healthy breakfast, lunch, dinner and dessert for that special someone to show them that you really care? Here are some suggestions for a romantic Do it yourself meals that will be healthy but still romantic. To start off your romantic day you will need to make sure you have all the supplies you will need for every meal.

Breakfast: Heart shaped French toast with fresh cut

strawberries, blueberries, kiwi, maple syrup and apple juice.

Ingredients: 8 piece of wheat bread 1 cup of fresh strawberries 1 cup of fresh blue berries 1 cup of fresh kiwi ¾ cup of maple syrup 1 cup of apple juice ¾ cup of I can’t believe it’s not butter 4 eggs 1 teaspoon of cinnamon In a large bowl, mix apple juice, cinnamon and eggs. Using a heart shaped cookie cutter, cut out heart shapes of your bread. Wash and slice up strawberries and kiwi; wash your blueberries as well. In a skillet, heat butter in bottom of pan. Dip and coat both sides of your heart shaped bread in the apple juice batter you made and place in pan. Cook both sides of bread until golden brown. Plate your French toast on nice plates, place fruit on top of French toast and pour desired amount of maple syrup. Breakfast may be served in bed for an extra touch of romance. ENJOY the breakfast and hopefully the “snack” that will come after.

Lunch: Lobster tail with a shrimp and scallop salad.

Ingredients for the lobster tail:

4 lobster tails 4 teaspoons of I can’t better it’s not butter (room temperature) 3 teaspoons of seafood seasoning 1 clove garlic, minced 1 zest lemon 1 tablespoon of lemon juice 2 tablespoon of parsley ¼ of salt and black pepper.

Ingredients for shrimp and scallop salad Mix green lettuce which has a mix of romaine, oak leaf lettuce, arugula, frisée, and radicchio ½ pound cooked shrimp ½ pound grilled scallops Salad dressing Clean lobster and season with garlic, parsley, seafood seasoning, salt and pepper, butter and lemon zest. Place lobster tails on a baking dish and cover loosely with foil. Bake on 350 for about 20 minutes or until an instant-read meat thermometer register and internal temperature of 140 to 145 degrees F. Do not overcook, as the lobster will become tough and rubbery. That definitely won’t get you a score.

For the salad; in a large salad bowl put your mixed green lettuce, shrimp and scallops. Add salt and pepper to taste, and desired salad dressing. Lightly mix and serve alongside your lobster. I suggest a nice trip to the mall to purchase nice lingerie set to get ready for the night and to walk off the meals you have already eaten. Maybe pick up a movie and a nice bottle of wine to go along with dinner.

And maybe to also help get her/him in the mood for the night; if they are not already in the mood.

Dinner: Grill chicken breast with oven roasted

asparagus, baked potato and red wine to drink.

Ingredients: 1 1/2-2 pounds boneless chicken breast 1 bunch thin asparagus spears, trimmed 3 tablespoons olive oil 1 1/2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese (optional) 1 clove garlic, minced 1 teaspoon sea salt 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper 1 tablespoon lemon juice 2 baked potato I can’t believe it’s not butter 2 cloves minced garlic Salt and pepper Season Chicken and asparagus sticks with salt, pepper, garlic, and lemon juice. Grill chicken until it is cooked all the way through. Grill asparagus.

Bake potatoes and add, garlic, salt, pepper and I can’t believe it’s not butter.

Serve with your favorite red wine. I suggest setting the table with some nice candles and beautiful flowers. When dinner is over, cuddle up with a movie.

When the movie is over, either take a shower with your mate or bathe them in a nice bubble bath to get them ready for dessert.

We have a great time together; he’s funny, attentive and gets along well with my family. When we are together, I want time to stand still. When we are apart, he always let me know he misses me. When he began hanging around my kids on a regular basis, I told them that he is my friend and may come around often.

They get along well and he loves being around them. He is a hard worker and said he had been searching for a woman like me all his life. The problem is we are not of the same nationality; I’m plus size and tall. He is smaller and shorter.

In 2014, I am still surprised at the looks and comments we get about our relationship.

One particular person calls regularly with reasons why it’s not going to work. What do you think I should do to make these people stop?

Shirley’s Response: Hello Colorblind.

Congratulations on having a relationship that makes you and your partner happy.

I will recommend that you take it slow to be sure this will be long term. It would not be healthy for your children to rush into this and it doesn’t work out. They need consistency during and after a divorce. Make sure your new friend is in it for the long haul.

Saying it is fine, but he has to have action behind it. Only time can tell.

Now, regarding the comments and stares, let that be the last of your concerns. Wait, let me backtrack. DO NOT LET IT BE A CONCERN AT ALL. Life is precious and very short. If you find love while living life, go for it. If someone makes a derogatory, negative/ discouraging comment to you, politely tell them you would appreciate his/her support in your decision and change the subject.

If they persist, put your foot down and demand they respect your wishes or you will limit your contact with them.

Regarding the busy body who loves the phone, you are in luck, Ms. Color Blind.

Phones now are your best friend. They have features called Caller ID, Reject Caller, Block Caller and a feature that I really like, Voicemail. Either of these will work well for you.

As for the rude stares, an obvious solution would be to ignore them but since I think outside the norm, this is what I would do.

Purchase a t-shirt, design a HUGE EYE on the front and back with a caption, “for those that stare, here’s looking at you”. For added effect, use hot glue to add eyelashes with eye shadow. It would be really cool if you could get the eye on the shirt to blink at them a few times with the long lashes curled OR even better, ROLL the eye in disgust as the rude onlookers stare.

Lastly remember don’t measure your life by how many breaths you take, but by how many times life or someone takes your breath away. Bat those lashes on that shirt girl and strut your stuff with your honey Question 2: Restricted wrote: Shirley, I have been dating a guy for about seven months. He told me in the beginning of his legal issues but now I’ve learned that they have taken a turn for the worst and he may be facing prison. What’s your advice? Should I leave while I can or should I see where this goes?

Shirley’s Response: Greetings Restricted.

Since you’ve provided me with limited information, I can only give you limited responses. If you’ve only invested seven months into the relationship and he will be away for a long time, that’s a very short period of time to throw your entire life away for someone. Other factors to consider: What type of crime? Is it something that could endanger your life or the lives of your loved ones? Get as many facts as you can.

However if he is only going away for a short period of time and over the past seven

months, he has shown you admirable qualities, treats you well, can be a great provider, and the two of you have mutual desire to build when he is released, then I say wait for him.

Remember, I said a “short period of time”.

I will give him credit for disclosing this to you in the beginning of your relationship and you “chose” to continue with the facts in front of you. Just because a person has a past does not make him or her a bad person. It could mean they made bad choices or could have been falsely accused. It has to be judged on an individual basis. I suggest you weigh all the pros and cons. Have a deep discussion with him and then an even deeper one with yourself. Whatever your choice, be happy Question 3.

Mad Macaroni wrote: Shirley, we are having our annual Thanksgiving dinner and one family member INSISTS on bringing the macaroni and cheese. The problem is SHE CANT COOK and everybody HATES her mac and cheese. We have asked her to bring pop or dessert instead but she won’t listen. How can we get her not to bring the dish without hurting her feelings?

Shirley’s Response: Hello Mad. Tell the family member that someone else wants to bring the same dish, which this is the ONLY dish they know how to prepare and this person would be so embarrassed if the family knew of this. If that doesn’t work, you prepare the mac and cheese, throw out the one your relative brought, replace yours in the dish the relative brought and place in the oven for a few minutes. When the table is being prepared, if the relative says it looks or tastes different, say the ingredients probably marinated more during the warm-up process which gives a different appearance and taste then serve.

Last suggestion is to tell the family member everyone is allergic to Mac and cheese, you prepare it, stuff it in baked potatoes and serve.

If asked what the new item is, call it Machatoes, (mac/cheese & baked potatos). Bon appétit

Question 4 Holiday Hopeful wrote: Hello Shirley.

I recently broke up from a long-term relationship. It hurts badly and I still love him but his dishonesty was devastating and there is no turning back. With the holidays coming, I do not want to spend the holidays alone nor do I want pity invitations. I have no children and siblings live out of state. What do you suggest?

Good afternoon Holiday Hopeful. I’m sorry you are hurting from the breakup but take it from personal experience, time will heal all wounds. Because you are vulnerable, it is very easy to reach back to your Ex to avoid spending the holidays alone. There are a few things you can do to avoid spending this season alone.

First, you can host a dinner. Invite friends or others that may have little or no family to be with. Depending on where you live, you could visit your local hospital or nursing home and volunteer to help celebrate with the elderly or children ward. Though there is lots of cheer during the holidays, there is also a lot of sorrow and depression. Many people are alone during this time and you will be a blessing to them.

The more you give of yourself, the less you will hurt from the breakup with your Ex. EVEN MORE IMPORTANT, as you are giving of yourself, give TO YOURSELF. Spend time enjoying and treating yourself.

One thing I urge you NOT TO DO: Do not stay home alone watching holiday shows on TV or listening to holiday songs thinking

about what could have been. Trust me, I made a promise to myself years ago that I would get out and enjoy life because if you don’t, it will pass you by.

If none of the above suggestions work for you, buy yourself a plane ticket or drive to your holiday happiness, wherever that may be. Visit a friend or relative you haven’t seen in a while.

They will be happy to see you.

Whether the holidays are Happy or Hopeless is up to you. Let’s make it HAPPY.

If you are not sitting on money or haven’t taken out a business loan, then chances are a lot of your company spending in the beginning will be coming from your pockets. Here are some things that you should really consider taking advantage of in order to create that professional and corporate look.

Don’t have a fax machine in your home office? No problem at all. Who wants to add another phone line just to receive faxes? Or have to deal with sharing one phone line for your fax and phone. What a mess that could be. A simple solution is to sign up for electronic faxing. There different inexpensive plans out there that will give you your own company fax number and allow fax to email options and vise versa. This is great because you don’t need to wait until you get home to receive a fax. Nor do you have to worry about using your job fax (if you also have a 9-5 job). There are plans that go for as low as about $5 a month. You just have to read them thoroughly to make sure it will best suit your company. Three that I can recommend based on the research that I did for myself are:

Contact Information Avoid using your cell or home numbers for your business. If you don’t want your clients knowing where you live then why are you comfortable giving out your personal numbers? Sign up for Google Voice. I find this service to be very helpful. For one, it’s free. Google Voice will generate numbers that you can choose from. You can sync the number with your cell phone so when people call your Google Voice number it will ring directly to your cell. You can set up a separate voicemail with your company info and have the voicemail messages text to you as well. Download the app to your phone to allow you to return clients’ calls from your Google Voice number instead of your cell phone number. I personally use Google Voice. And the one major plus for me is that you never have to worry about losing your Google Voice number

Conference Calling To avoid unnecessary face to face meetings, people usually opt for conference calls instead. You don’t want to have to deal with toying around with the conference call feature on your phone, nor do you want to have to deal with having to ask one of your clients to provide a conference line for you when you are the one calling for the phone conference. It could get pretty expensive having to pay for conference line. However, there is one FREE conference line that I highly recommend. I’ve always wanted to show the world that being beautiful isn’t just about having a pretty face and being a size. Beauty is the embodiment of intelligence, confidence and kindness bundled up into the amazing creation that is the human form and sexy is a state of mind!

Beauty comes in all shapes and sizes! I was recently signed to an up and coming agency that focuses on talent or all types. Through them I’ll be auditioning for a few upcoming runway shows and castings for ad campaigns.

Did you know that one in every three women die of heart disease each year? Astonishing isn’t it? Heart disease is the number one killer of women. Most people think that if you are having a heart attack that you will recognize it for what it is. Contrary to popular belief, this could not be further for the truth. There are very subtle signs and symptoms that many of us brush off as nothing. But little do you know, you may be experiencing warning signals at the very least. Some things to watch out for are unexplained shortness of breath, back pain, jaw pain, and nausea. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms then you should go to the emergency room immediately to get checked out. It is much better to be safe than sorry. You don’t want to mess around with your heart and cause any damage. Never think that you are too young or too healthy to experience a heart attack or stroke.

I remember going to a seminar and hearing a woman’s story of how she was experiencing a heart attack and paid it no mind. She got her kids ready for school while experiencing palpitations; they subsided and she put it off.

She drove the kids to school while having some shortness of breath; she said to herself that she needs to make an appointment to see the doctor sometime in the future to inquire about these new symptoms. She went to pick up clothes from the cleaners for her husband. When she got back home to begin her chores, she was hit with some chest pains and some sever sweating. It was then that she decided to call a friend to discuss what she was feeling. Her friend convinced her to let her come and take her to the hospital to get checked out, even though she still wanted to finish her chores. At the hospital, after running tests, it was confirmed that she was indeed experiencing a mild heart attack.

This story stayed with me because I could be that woman; any of us can. As women, wives, and mothers, we tend to put everyone ahead of ourselves. What I took from this story when I heard her speak was that we have to learn how to take care of ourselves. Yes, everyone depends on us but if we are gone we can’t help anyone. Rheumatic heart disease Rheumatic heart disease is caused by one or more attacks of rheumatic fever, which then do damage to the heart, particularly the heart valves. Rheumatic fever usually occurs in childhood, and may follow a streptococcal infection. In some cases, the infection affects the heart and may result in scarring the valves, weakening the heart muscle, or damaging the sac enclosing the heart. The valves are sometimes scarred so they do not open and close normally.

Hypertensive heart disease High blood pressure of unknown origin (primary hypertension) or caused by (secondary hypertension) certain specific diseases or infections, such as tumor in the adrenal glands, damage to or disease of the kidneys or their blood vessels. High blood pressure may overburden the heart and blood vessels and cause disease.

Ischemic heart disease Heart ailments caused by narrowing of the coronary arteries and therefore a decreased blood supply to the heart.

Cerebrovascular disease Disease pertaining to the blood vessels in the brain. A cerebrovascular accident or stroke is the result of an impeded blood supply to some part of the brain.

Inflammatory heart disease Inflammation of the heart muscle (myocarditis), the membrane sac (pericarditis) which surround the heart, the inner lining of the heart (endocarditis) or the myocardium (heart muscle). Inflammation may be caused by known toxic or infectious agents or by an unknown origin.

Tawana: Ms. Scott, thank you for your time. For those that don’t know, can you explain the meaning behind your company name? LS 1426 Ms. Scott: LS 1426 means Linda Scott models between the sizes 14-26.

Tawana: Did you begin your Consulting and Special Events Company because of your love for fashion? Or did the love for passion come as a result?

Ms. Scott: The Company was started because of the passion that I had and giving back to the community for merging and designer for emerging designers and emerging models they need is someone to guide them.

Tawana: How long have you been modeling yourself?

Ms. Scott: Back in 1982 I was discovered and I start modeling as a standard model.

Tawana: What inspired you to start LS 1426 Academy?

Ms. Scott: I started the Academy because I would go to fashion shows and see models on the runway not knowing how to carry themselves. They were all over the place.

Because you are beautiful or you are tall didn’t make you a model.

Ms. Scott: The three pieces of advice that I would give to a plus size model or model. Trying to get into the business is to research the business, volunteer, and stay true to yourself.

Tawana: Can you share any upcoming shows that you have coming up?

Ms. Scott: A few shows we have coming up are 1426 Curves Swim Week, You Got The Look model Competition and 1426 Fashion Week.

Ms. Scott: Because of the love of giving models and designers make up artist a platform to live their dreams.

Tawana: Is this the path that you always thought you would take?

Ms. Scott: No (smiling).

Tawana: Looking at all that you have done; is there one thing in this career that you would like to accomplish that you have not done already?

NiccaBoone Nicca Boone is a former pageant queen turned model who holds two state titles as well as first runner-up in the national Miss Plus America Pageant system. She has been active in the modeling industry since 2010, and concentrates on professional growth. The Then and Now of Corsets

Corsets date back to the early 1700’s. And while it is most glorified by women, both men and women wear them for various reasons. The corset has evolved as fashion trends have changed. The peak of the corset was in the Victorian era and was typically worn as an undergarment; it has also been used as a outer garment. The term corset means “a kind of lace bodice” which dates back to the 1300’s. I found this to be very interesting and amused that although fashion has changed over time, the desire of having a small waist and more curves has always been the look to achieve.

Corsets have many pros but there are also cons to wearing them. Benefits include better posture, minimizing back pain for people with past injuries (i.e. car accidents, slipped discs, etc.), some neurological disorders (i.e. tics, ataxia), and autoimmune disorders (e.g. osteoarthritis, degenerative disc disease, fibromyalgia) and waist training. Men who need back support also wear corsets – a custom fit piece can help them keep a masculine physique. Ladies I know you’ll like this; Corsets are also helpful in minimizing menstrual cramps. I don’t know about you but I was already a fan, this just sealed the deal for me. And while the benefits are many, there are also some dangers with extreme wearing of Corsets.
