Welcome to the November 2016 issue of Queen Size Magazine. Sweet November, with the beautiful cool weather. It’s my favorite time of year because I just love to layer up. Before I get to fashion, let me say that this month I had the pleasure of chatting with THE Ms. Michael Tyson; daughter of the Iron Mike Tyson himself. What a beautiful soul she is. I had the opportunity of interviewing her and learning her plans for breaking into the modeling industry, fashion industry and entrepreneurship. Check out the interview guys and tell us what you think. NOW for fashion; layer up season is here! Boot season! Chilly NOT cold weather. I love it. In this issue we featured some pieces from The Avenue’s fall line and Torrid’s Denim line as well. Chrisie Styles Boutique is also featured with some of her fall line as well. We have so many options as plus size Divas these days; there is no excuse NOT to look fabulous. Please enjoy this issue and feel free to send us an email to queensizemagazine@ gmail.com and let us know what you would like to see added.

Falling into fall

BEAUTY AND FASHION

It’s that time of year again where the weather is often times perfect. Well to me that is! Who likes all that heat; I certainly don’t, but bring me the coolest breeze. With all those misty mornings and cool nights’ breeze, you will find yourself grabbing for those light jackets. That doesn’t mean you will instantly toss all your summer attire into boxes. I would like to call this time of year the “transitioning period” – the falling into fall. This transition requires you transforming your summer clothing to accommodate the changing weather. This is easily achieved by pairing your summer clothing with the perfect jacket, cardigan or sweater. Yes – Fall is all about layering. Cardigans (long and short) are my favorite, go to attire during the Fall. Again - the weather is unpredictable and I love having the option of adding or subtracting my attire to facilitate the “bipolar weather”.

Remember that gorgeous and flattering summer dress that you couldn’t help but wear everywhere? DO NOT box it yet. All you need is the perfect pair of boots and your denim jacket to keep you warm during fall. Should it get a bit warm for you during the day, guess what – you have the option to take it off. The many reasons I love layering.

Falling into fall What’s Trending for Fall 2016? 1. Denim on Denim - Denim is a girl’s best friend during the fall, especially for all those evening dinners with the girls. For Fall 2016, you will be seeing a lot of denim on denim looks. Make sure you stock up on that look. 2. The color for Fall 2016 is Merlot! Yes, Dolls!!! – make sure you stock up on this color. Honestly, this color is perfect for this time of year. You know me; I am not a big fan of dull colors (black, gray, brown, etc.). Who would have guessed? Merlot, on the other hand, is that perfect blend – not too bright but far from dull. The fashion world has got it right this time. I love this color and it’s currently trending. So make sure it’s in your closet. Until next time stay Fabulous! xoxoxox Meesh Ann

MAKEUP MUST HAVES FOR BEGINNERS I am a true makeup beginner myself; there was a time when I would not be caught with makeup on my face. But now that I am heavily into the fashion industry and I am taking more and more photos, I realized that I needed to update my look a bit. I probably will never be an over the top makeup wearer, but I have learned that I can make some slight adjustments to make a big impact in my photos.

If you are just starting out like me and you want to build a start up kit then here are my suggestions.

1/ FACE PRIMER This is an important first step before putting on your foundation. I always felt like the primer should have been called the foundation because it really is the foundation

WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|NOVEMBER 2016 ISSUE

for your makeup. It prevents your face from looking dry or oily so that your foundation can be applied smoothly.

2/ FOUNDATION Get yourself matched color-wise for a good foundation. I suggest finding a brand with a built in concealer or one that provides a great and flawless coverage. I definitely suggest Pink

Stiletto Cosmetics because their foundations are organic. This is helpful for me and anyone else with sensitive skin. Also if you are just starting out wearing foundations and you are just not sure how your face will react, this is a good start because it is very gentle and it provides amazing coverage. I don’t use concealer with this product at all.

MAKEUP MUST HAVES FOR BEGINNERS| QSM

3/ HIGHLIGHT POWDER

6/ MAKEUP BRUSHES

If you are one to take photos a lot then this is a must have in your kit. This prevents the flash from cameras from bouncing harshly off your face and it will give your face that much needed glow, preventing you from looking flat in your photos.

Getting yourself some good makeup bushes is essential and it also makes you look like you know what you’re doing. You don’t need to go all out in the beginning and get the 20 piece set because you won’t use them nor will you know what to use them for. Go basic and get you a nice piece. I got me a nice hot pink set for B&H Cosmetics for $12; can you say WINNING.

4/ EYELINER A little eyeliner makes such a big difference on your eyes. Truth be told, you can go without makeup, add some eyeliner to your eyes and see a difference in your look.

5/ LIP GLOSS/LIPSTICK It took me a really long time to begin wearing colors on my lips. I was always ok with wearing lip gloss with a hint of color. One day I went to an event and a young lady wanted to use me as a muse, I fell in love with color. There are three really good brands that I recommend. Pink Stiletto Cosmetics has some really nice lip whips. CDiamonds Cosmetics also has some nice lip glosses and lip sticks (I own quite a few). And one brand that I recently fell in love with was Moni B Cosmetics; I love their colors.

7/ EYESHADOW I think it is pretty cool to match up your eyeshades with your lipsticks. You can get you a really nice and inexpensive eyeshadow palette from elf cosmetics. I just got me one with 82 shades for $20.

19

a long way. You can get a bag that resembles pocketbooks and luggage cases. The possibilities are endless with this. You can look on amazon and find something that matches your personal taste or just visit any store that sells makeup.

These are all just very basic must haves for beginners. Having this small list of items can make a big difference. Now for application you can take a class like I did or just watch tutorials on Youtube and practice practice practice.

8/ EYELASHES This is pretty much based on personal preference. Some like it and some don’t. If you are not sure about it then I suggest starting with the very small size. For me they are heavy on my eyes but I look AMAZING with them on. LOL

9/ MAKEUP BAG To house all of your makeup you are going to need to get you a nice official makeup bag. Makeup bags have come

Growing up Ms. Tyson drew inspiration from Model and Author, Crystal Renn, recognizing her own struggle with weight issues. As Ms. Tyson grew more aware towards her own health and wellness so did her dedicated focus on using her growing platform to educate families on the issues surrounding childhood obesity, with an initiative to develop an organization working within schools throughout the NYC Metro Area. Mindful of her status growing up the child of a championed athlete, Ms. Tyson understood how her family name allowed certain privileges such as accessibility to weight loss camps and personal trainers, which is something not readily available for many families within urban communities and it will be through her organization which she has named ‘Tysons Bow’ that Ms. Tyson plans to offer activity and educational resources to communities & families throughout the city. A woman with passions for Travel, Art and of course Fashion; Ms. Tyson is in talks to work with retail Brands who share her motto of dedication to craft, confidence, and compassion which will overall translate what it means to represent the Plus Size Women with a strong presence and Refined Style. QSM: First And Foremost, I Want To Congratulate You On Your Weight Loss. I For One Know How Tough That Journey Can Be. How Did You Do It? Michael: Thank You So Much… Initially, I Had A Very Hard Time Losing Weight. I Have Been Battling Obesity My Entire Life, But This Time Around I Lost The Weight By Incorporating A Low Calorie, Low Fat Diet Running & Dancing… Belly Dancing Specifically!! .. I Wanted To Make This Go At Weight Loss As Fun As Possible. QSM: Belly Dancing Sure Does Sound Like Fun. How Much Weight Did You Lose If You Don’t Mind Me Asking? Michael: I Can’t Really Say. I’m Not Really A Scale Girl... I Would Pay More Attention To How My Clothes Were Fitting. If I Had To Guess A Number I’d Say About 150 Lbs. From My Highest Recorded Weight Which Was 390 Lbs. QSM: That Is Great. Congrats. I Have To Admit, I Am Not A Scale Girl Either. I Measure My Loss The Same Way You Did. Lol. Now, Not To Sound So Cliché-Is; But What Was It Like Growing Up As Mike Tyson’s Daughter? Were Your Boyfriends Scared To Come Over? Lol Michael: Lol Well I Haven’t Had Too Many Boyfriends Come Over To Meet My Father And I Would Never Be Involved With A Man Who Couldn’t Hold His Own Lol… As Far As How It Feels Being Mike Tyson’s Daughter, It’s Like; He’s The Only Father I’ve Ever Known So I Have No Other Base Of Comparison. I Just Don’t Know What It Feels Like To Not Be His Daughter You Know?! My Life Has Been Extremely Blessed Because Of My Father And I Just Want To Acknowledge Him As The Great Dad He Has Always Been. QSM: Incredible. Tell Us A Little Bit About Michael Tyson. Michael: I’d Say Ms. Michael Is A Triumphant Girl From Harlem Who Loves Life, Culture And People. Many People Can Find Me Intimidating Because They Know My Stock And I Recognize I Tend To Have A Lioness Glare About Me, But Once You Meet Me I’m Pretty Much A Comedienne!! I Am Super Inquisitive, Always Striving To Learn More, And I’m Someone Who Is Leading A Life Of Empowerment To Inspire Other Women. QSM: In Regards To Fashion; What Piqued Your Interest? Michael: Well Fashion Has Always Been A Huge Part Of My Life… Growing Up As A Child Of The Nineties A Mix Of Glamour And Gaudiness Was All The Rage And I Just So Happened To Grow Up With Parents Who Were Obsessed With Great Style. My Mother Kept Me Dressed In The Latest

WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|NOVEMBER 2016 ISSUE

Trends In Both Urban Gear And High End Designers, As A Girl Who Was Both A Harlem Native As Well As Someone Who Attended A Private Boarding School In Maine. My Love And Appreciation For Fashion Throughout My Life Has Been Greatly Influenced By The Versatility Of My Exposure To It. QSM: Makes Sense. You Seemed To Have Jumped Onto The Scene Over Night Though. I See You Are Ready To Do This? What Is It About Modeling That Got You Ready To Walk The Runway And Pose For The Cameras? Michael: It’s An Honor To Hear You Say I Came On The Scene Overnight Because It Took A Lot Of Patience And Great Effort To Get To The Point I Am At Now. I Remember Ripping All Of Crystal Renn’s Torrid Ads Out Of Magazines And I Said To Myself One Day That Is Going To Be Me… I Am Going To Be Beautiful When I Grow Up, So I Decided To Start My Journey As A Plus Size Model And Because I Was A Size 24 At The Time I Was Always Turned Down For Jobs And Agencies. QSM: What Is Your Opinion On The Progress Of The Plus Size Fashion Industry? Michael: I Feel There Has Been Major Progression In The Plus Fashion Industry Since I Was A Young Girl. I Wish There Were As Many Options Back When I Was Growing Up As They Have Now… It’s Incredible To See The World Embrace Body Positive Activists Such As Tess Holiday And Lizzie Miller. I Remember How Much It Empowered Me As A Young Girl Seeing Crystal Renn In Those Ads And Now Models Like Tess And Lizzie Show How Great Style Can Be Worn On A Range Of Body Sizes. We Have So Many More Clothing Options And I Just Love How Fashion Can Really Create A Positive Body Image In Young Girls, Allowing Them To See The Beauty In Themselves. QSM: What Contributions Do You Feel You Will Make And What Would You Like To See Change? Michael: The Contributions I Would To Make Is To Send A Message To Love Yourself, Value Yourself, And Don’t Ever Wait For The Perfect Size. Don’t Wait!! Always Live Your Life In The Current, In The Now, You Never Get Precious Time Back! Make Everything You Want To Do, Work For You. And Last But Not Least, Take Care Of Yourself!

QSM: GREAT advice! You are also looking to start your own clothing and shoe line; can you tell us a little bit about that? Michael: My shoe line size 11-15 narrow, wide, and regular fits. They are very High end leather, gaudy, with beautiful embellishments. They are practical wearable, and workable, while dainty and classy. The perfect combination! A few exclusive Designs and Samples will be available for a sneak peak at an upcoming must see Sip and Chat event in April!!! QSM: Just do me a favor Miki; please make sure you have some size 7’s and 7.5’s in your shoe inventory ok? Us little feet people still exist. LOL Michael: Noooo! I appreciate you wanting me to accommodate those sizes in my designs; however as of now I have not been designing those sizes yet. Hopefully Inashallah we will have a company that may accommodate all sizes at a later time. QSM: Ok I will take that for now. Lol. How did you come up with the name Tyson’s Bow? What is the meaning behind that? Michael: Well you know my last name is Tyson, and Bow is a symbol of love. Tyson’s Bow means Tyson’s gift, as in a true gift from the heart wrapped delicately in a Bow. My gift of giving back to inner city girls in areas of Harlem and Brooklyn will provide an otherwise not affordable opportunity for youth to eat healthy, attend weight loss camp, gain culinary skills and information to access healthier eating choices. QSM: I like the idea you have of going into the schools and helping the children and families get educated on obesity. I always feel like people learn better from people that have traveled in their shoes rather than the doctors. That’s just my opinion. Will Tyson’s Bow travel from school to school or is this something you are looking to add to the school’s curriculum? Michael: I anticipate making it an AFTER school program or extracurricular sign up based program rather than administering services IN the schools. I prefer the girls not to have to feel embarrassed but instead feel welcomed and encouraged to participate based on a safe, secure, judge free zone that is inclusive and upscale. I don’t ever want anyone to feel targeted for bullied so the environment will

27

be a place to build relationships and grow friendships in a like minded setting of empowering each other and helping themselves. Picture a rubenesque rendezvous! QSM: Got it! I like that. What else are you working on that we can look out for? Michael: I am working on a Non-Profit organization to combat obesity centered around inner cities such as Harlem and Brooklyn. I want to provide resources that will directly address childhood obesity, including affordable weight loss camps, ways to get the mothers innovative culinary skills to cook for their families and an influx of information on effective healthy shopping, self-esteem, and even groom alike. This campaign will spread tools on how to empower themselves emotionally, physically, and mentally, I am very passionate about my work. Hearing it here first, I am halfway done with my autobiography which discloses how I felt growing up as an overweight youth alongside my heavy weight champion father. I dive right into some of the difficulties I endured growing up with my stepfather, and even shared very difficult experiences about being bullied in high school. So much packed into these pages where I spell out my journey through weight loss camps, and even many things about some of my adulthood experiences with alcohol and finding a to tranquility through depression. QSM: Great news; I cannot wait to read this. Where can people follow you and stay updated? Michael: People can follow me on instagram @ madametyson QSM: Thank you Miki for your time. Please do keep in touch… and we will be following your journey. Any final thoughts: Michael: My final thoughts are: when you find the beauty in yourself and find the person that you decide you want to be, take that journey and go for it because you can ABSOLUTELY be that person!!! Do NOT let anyone DISCOURAGE you, and always follow through everything you want to do! You can do it, and ALWAYS believe you are the BEST!!!!

QSM: Where are you from Chris? Chris: I was born and raised in Harlem; I now live in Willingboro NJ. QSM: What was life like growing up? Were you always a plus size Diva? Chris: Life for me was wonderful. I had two loving parents. I was not always a plus size diva. I used to be a very slim young girl. After my second child is when I became curvy. QSM: As I understand it, you are a breast cancer survivor. Many blessings to you on that. Can you share a little of that with us? Chris: I was diagnosed with Stage 1 Her 2+ Breast Cancer in October of 2013, at the age of 34. I had a Double Mastectomy with reconstruction. I also had four rounds of chemotherapy. I have been in remission for three years now. QSM: Glory to God. Let’s talk about Chrisie Styles online Boutique where you are the CEO of. What made you want to open up a boutique? Chris: I decided to open a boutique because of my own experiences when shopping for myself. There is a huge disparity between the selections when shopping in my local mall. Plus size fashion was so sparse. I knew how I like to dress, and wanted to look. So I created Chrisie Styles Boutique. QSM: Did the boutique come after your victory with breast cancer? Chris: Yes I opened my boutique about two years after my illness. QSM: What can people find when they visit your Boutique? Chris: Women can find affordable plus size fashion for themselves or if they have a plus size teenager in their lives. We sell semiformal and casual pieces for all occasions.

QSM: What size clothing do you sell? Chris: I sell sizes 1X to 3X. Usually a 1X is a 14/16, sometimes a 1X is a size 10/12 depending on which supplier I have gotten a particular piece from. We even have a few dresses that go up to 4X. QSM: Where do you get your clothing from to sell? Chris: I have searched the globe to find affordable suppliers with really good quality. Right now I have been sourcing my stock from the west coast. QSM: I will ask the question that I always ask other boutique owners because I know others want to know as well. Is your clothing true plus size? Chris: That a great question. It really just depends on which supplier I purchased from. Some pieces are very true to size, and some run junior plus. We have very detailed product descriptions to help my customers choose and purchase their correct size. QSM: Have you ever wanted to or do you think you will go into designing your own clothing line? Chris: Yes I have thought about designing my own clothing. I have a few ideas for my first few pieces. I can’t sew, and just met a seamstress. I feel she and I will be able to bring all of my ideas to life. I hope to be working with her very soon. QSM: With so many boutiques popping up every day, how do you make yourself stand out from the rest? Chris: I think I stand out because I don’t always grab what just became available on my suppliers webpage. If I bought everything new then I would have exactly what all the other boutiques have. Also I know who my customers are, and

31

what they need, and how they would like to look. Knowing my customers allows me to choose the appropriate pieces to keep them all shopping, and telling their friends and family. QSM: Do you offer personal styling as well? Chris: Currently I do not offer personal styling. I did do it once before and really enjoyed it. I think that’s something that I can get back in to. QSM: What can we be on the lookout for from you? I know you have some exciting news you are releasing soon; can you share it will our readers first? Chris: My team and I are very excited about everything going on behind the scenes. In spring of 2017 we will not only be an online boutique, we will also be a mobile boutique. We will be opening up a Fashion Truck. We also hope to have our T-shirt line ready to drop at the same time. QSM: Please tell everyone where they can find you. Chris: Our website is www.chrisiestyles.com. Follow us on Facebook and Instagram @ Chrisie Styles Boutique. You can find us on Pinterest and Twitter @ Chrisie Styles. You can also chat live with us during our normal business hours. Or give us a call, our business number is 267-638-6209. QSM: Thank you Chris for your time and continued success to you. MS. PHILADELPHIA FULL FIGURE PAGEANT 2016

Steve Kemp and Ebony Williams, the dynamic duo started the Ms. Philadelphia Full Figure Pageant in 2015 after Ebony herself took home a Pageant crown in 2013. She gave the pageant the theme “Loving All of ME” because that is what she encourages the contestants and all other women she comes in contact with to do. Steve, affectionately known as Stevo is the CFO of Everyday Transitions, LLC., and of course Ebony is the CEO. This year’s pageant consisted of twelve contestants; all of whom came out and gave one hundred percent. It takes so much to allow yourself to get on a stage and be judged by so many people. And the ladies did a superb job in all categories. It was a true honor to judge this year’s competition. I look forward to what this competition brings next year. Congratulations to the winner of this year’s pageant, Ms. Natia Jenkins. And to the First and Second runner ups, Ms. Shanada McCants and Ms. Chastity Houston.

BUSINESS

40 I never claim to be in an expert in business. I have made mistakes in my own business; we all have. However, there have been very valuable lessons that I have learned along the way that has helped me in consulting others. I own and run a model management company; we teach our models what most people are not. We teach our models to recognize and treat their modeling careers as legitimate businesses. In order for your business to flourish you have to build your foundation. With any business, it starts with a plan; there are things that you must have if you plan on being taken seriously as a model. This is one of the things that many models don’t take into consideration. They know modeling to be photo shoots, walking runways, fit modeling, pageants, industry parties, having fun, etc… It takes more than

WRITE A BUSINESS PLAN

Do your research on the type of modeling that exists and then figure out what types you want to get into. What will be your model name (which should be viewed as your company/business name). A name that is professional and companies would not hesitate to have you represent them under. Learn to properly brand yourself as well. Doing so will help make you look more professional and will help you avoid many mistakes that can break your business.

a pretty face and a nice body. Of course these things do help but it is important to be able to show your potential clients that you are not just beautiful, but that you are smart as well. By no means does this apply to all models so I am only speaking in regards to what I have seen. Every event, casting call or interaction should be treated as an interview. Whether you like it or not you are always being watched, judged and or critiqued (even when you don’t want to be). If you think about it you are actually going for a job so this is technically and interview; an opportunity to show why you should have the job. When you show up for that interview there are certain rules that apply: dress appropriately, do your research on the

TARGET AUDIENCE

As mentioned before, you have to know what your brand is and what type of modeling you want to get into. If you don’t have a clear goal as to what you want to market and who you want to market to you can spend countless time, money, resources and energy going in circles. For instance, if you want to get into print modeling doing runway might help you in the beginning but it is not going to get you where you need to be (unless you just happen to meet the right person). Or if you want to get into fit modeling, how long will you continue doing photo shoots withoyt actually looking to make connections before you realize this is costing you more money than needed.

company you want to work for, bring your resume and your professionalism. Modeling is no different; you show up dressed in the proper attire (will vary depending on the casting), bring your comp cards and portfolio (if you have one), do your research on the company you are casting for/with and bring your professionalism. There is no difference here. This article was written with the intentions of helping you understand how to look at modeling from a business perspective and not just as having fun. Changing your mindset I believe will help you understand how to be a well prepared model and to utilize your resources, money and energy better.

BUSINESS MATERIALS

On your to do list should be getting your business materials together. These things consist of your business cards and/or comp cards. Some people will get both because not everybody will need your comp card so having a business card is helpful and will save you from having to replenish your stack of comp cards so often. Comp cards can be pricey and let’s face it; business cards will fit easier in people’s wallets as well. You will want to research and get a collection of body foundations that fits your body. You also want to invest in a nice portfolio book for your images. A portfolio is built over time and will consist of your absolute BEST jaw dropping images. So you definitely want to work with some great photographers. Invest in a variety of nice comfortable heels that you can walk in and PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE.

FROM BUSINESS MODEL TO YOUR MODELING BUSINESS

BUSINESS NAME

This is crucial and this is where a lot of people start out on the wrong foot. Whether it’s in modeling or business, your professionalism will be judged if you choose the “wrong” name. For those that choose to model under their government name, this would not apply to you. There are people that prefer to model under an alias, and there is nothing wrong with that. If you are one of those people then the advice is to be careful with the sexy descriptive names because they could be viewed as unprofessional. Many argue that a name should not keep you from getting a job; while I partially agree with that statement, I do understand the importance of making decisions that best represent my company. For example; let’s say you are looking for a model management company to represent you and I approach you with my business card. My card says my company’s name is Pink Pussy Cats; would you want me to represent you? Ask yourself why or why not!

MENTORS

It is always great to have friends to give you advice on what you should or should not be doing. But believe me when I tell you that one of the keys to success is having a great mentor. Oh and yes you can have more than one. Your mentors should be people in positions that you want to achieve, and who have sustained success. These are the people that are going to advise you on how to get to where they are. Your friends and colleagues are great to have around but they are not always going to be one hundred percent honest with you when you are doing things wrong; whether they know you are doing wrong or not. Your friends and colleagues are going to encourage you but they can’t teach you how to be a millionaire if they are not millionaires themselves. They can’t teach you how to be successful if they are climbing that ladder behind you. Find great mentors!!!!

ORIGINALITY

In a world where there are so many companies that all market the same thing, they have to find new ways to make their product more appealing than others. For example, cell phone companies, fast food joints, banks, etc… Modeling is no different. Everyone takes great photos, everyone is ”slaying” the runway, and everyone calls themselves a model. So what makes you different or stand out? You have to find your niche and make yourself stand out from others. When clients are looking for five models after five hundred people have showed up for the casting, it will always come down to the tiniest detail. What will make you different from everyone else? This can include anything from your ability to follow instructions, your social media pages, that portfolio and/or comp card, that greeting… anything. Find a way to be different but still be a professional you.

TRASHINA CONNER AUTHOR

In today’s society most of us know what it is like to struggle to survive. It is usually harder on children than it is adults because their young mind doesn’t know the reasons behind the struggle. Approximately 24 million children are living without a physical presence of a father in their lives. And to them, especially females it makes the struggle even harder. Even in two parent household the father can be present in the house physically; but they do not play an active role in their children’s lives because they make other things more important than spending quality time with their kids. Most men who are present connect more with their sons because they feel they can relate to them better since they were boys once themselves. They can play and watch sports with them; hang out and talk about guy things they just feel they can achieve more dealing with their sons than they do their daughters. The daughter feels left out because we all know that a dad is a girl’s heart as he is the first male figure in her life. Keeping that in mind; without that presence of a male figure, it makes it harder for females to know what to expect when a male does enter her life in the years to come. I happened to come across someone who has had that daddy presence in her life and how it positively help her make all the wise decisions she has made to make her life run smoothly. She is a children’s book author who shares her experience with her dad; in a book called 18 Ingredients to make Daddy. Her name is Trashina Conner.

TRASHINA CONNER| LORRIE S. MCKNIGHT

Lorrie: Hello Trashina, can you tell me a little about yourself? Trashina: I am 28 years old and I am originally from saginaw, michigan. I went to howard university where i studied theatre arts and dance and i received my bachelors in fine arts. After college I moved to new york where i am currently a choreographer, a middle school dance teacher and now the author of the book 18 ingredients to make daddy. Lorrie: So you decided to write the Children’s book 18 Ingredients to Make Daddy; what or whom inspired you to write a book and why a children’s book? Trashina: I wanted to bring awareness to what a father daughter relationship meant to me and how it would bring a positive effect to the lives of young girls. My own father passed away when I was 18. I remember the lessons he gave me while I was growing up. I remember the time he spent with me and that his presence made a positive input in my life. He helped me find my self-worth (self-esteem). Lorrie: Most girls grew up in a single parent household and never had that daddy experience. Do you think your book could help young girls when they get older know what to look for in the type of man to date/marry? Most girls who know their father look for men who are similar to their fathers? Trashina: Yes I believe that all females should have some kind of male presence in their lives if they don’t have their fathers there is also grandfathers, male Pastors, teachers or maybe an older brother that can be there for them. I believe the ingredients in my book can help that process in what male figures should be around them. As a middle school teacher I see a lot of girls go through self esteem problems. They seem so insecure about themselves. Lorrie: Some of the ingredients you mentioned were patience, support, quality time and singing ability just to name a few. Why are these important? And why did you only use 18 ingredients to represent the configuration of a dad? Trashina: The 18 ingredients represents the 18 years I had with my father. To have patience is to be there through their child’s mistakes, support their child’s goals and to teach them not to settle for less. Spend quality time by doing an activity that she likes to do like singing, having snow ball fights; you can even do her hair or dress up with her. Just having that one on one time with your child would make a big difference in how she thrives in life.

are also a teacher and a dancer how did that come about? Trashina: I started dancing at four years old; I went to performing arts school in middle school and high school. By attending Howard University (HBCU) it really opens my eyes to dance. I became a teacher because I wanted to bring what I learned about dance to the students. Dance teaches them to be more discipline, have better communication skills with others, have self love and to freely express themselves without the fear of judgment. Lorrie: What advice would you like to give your target audience, especially men and children who can benefit from reading your book? Trashina: First of all I would like to let everyone know that the lessons my father taught me was to never give up, don’t quit, keep pressing on when things are difficult. I use what he taught me to continue on life’s journey. Knowing that he is still with me in spirit helps me overcome life’s obstacles. My advice for the men would be to be present in your child’s life, to show up and instill values in them. Be loving and supportive. The main focus is to just be there. For the kids I would tell them to reach for the stars regardless of your upbringing. Put in hard work in everything you do and make sure you are compassionate about your goals and desires. Lorrie: It was a pleasure talking to you I really enjoyed the experience that I learned in the short time we talked. Please tell our audience how you can be reached and where they could purchase a copy of your book? Trashina: You can purchase a copy of my book at Amazon. com; Barnes and Noble.com; Kindle and Mascot Books. You can go to my website at www.Trashinaconner.org or email me at t.connera@gmail.com
