Floreat Domus

This annual fund covers resources, such as scripts, costumes, props and equipment, as well as for workshops and collaborations with directors. The budget also provides money for shows and enables the group to expand on what they can offer in different spaces around the College.
The Scanlan-Michell Fund has been named after Joanna Scanlan (1980) and the late Roger Michell (1974), two notable alumni who both won BAFTAs.
Stephen has been a principal supporter of the Arts at Queens’ for many years. The Farrant Fund sponsors MagSoc termly concerts and recitals throughout the year. There are also proposals to refurbish the music rooms and give funding to The Arts Society and postgraduate music students.
“Thank you so much for your wonderfully generous support of Bats at Queens’. I have, in turn, been honoured alongside Roger Michell RIP as the name attached to this new source of funding for theatre making. Whilst I was at Queens’ I played 21 roles in a variety of productions, many through Bats. I have always said that the real privilege of an education at a Cambridge University college is access to resources.
As a group of students forty years ago, we were able to experiment, learn from each other, give ourselves an education in the great canon of English Literature and write new plays too. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for making this even more possible for Queens’ students today. This is especially meaningful given the President, Dr El-Erian’s drive for further inclusivity. I have very happy memories of playing in The Duchess of Malfi using the cloisters and President’s Lodge as a backdrop. Not much has changed in the architecture of the quad itself yet the river of creative energy amongst young people continues to give the inherent beauty and history value and purpose.
When I was young, I wouldn’t have noticed who had made my privileges possible, but after a lifetime of working as a beneficiary of arts funding I very much do! Thanks to someone who recognises how much young people long and need to create and giving them the means to do so.”
At a time when funding for the arts is declining nationally, the Bats have recently been gifted a transformative investment from Stephen Farrant (1956), via the Friends of Aliki Vatikioti for Music & the Arts.Joanna won the 2021 BAFTA for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her performance as Mary Hussain in After Love, directed by Aleem Khan. The current Bats after their performance of The Tempest in May Week
Nourhan Nassar loved the pursuit of knowledge. She was curious, clever, kind and valued access to education for all.
When Nourhan suddenly passed away in 2019 during her studies, her close friends from College, Brett Cotten (2019) and Jakub Karczewski (2019), spearheaded the creation of a Fund made in her name to continue to build the bridge between Arab and Western cultures. As one of our main projects for the inaugural Giving Day, a remaining £85,000 was raised to complete the Fund. Brett and Jakub recently returned to the College to graduate and met with Professor Andrew Marsham, DoS in AMES and Senior Development Officer, Emma Charlesworth to celebrate Nourhan’s legacy.
Grants from this Fund shall be made on the recommendation of the Director of Studies and will produce continual support for future AMES students, providing financial aid for academic-related activities, including research and field work, travel expenses and educational materials.
During his final year at Queens’, Gregory Holyoke (2018) recently visited Tunisia, made possible thanks to other non-specific financial aid. With the Nourhan Nassar Fund, more students can now access £3,000 a year for trips like these that are fundamental to enhancing student learning experiences.
In the first week of Easter break —not holiday, as we have repeatedly been told by the faculty—I went to Tunisia to improve my Arabic, which had been slipping since returning from Egypt. My teacher had warned me that she, an Egyptian, preferred to speak in French to Tunisians as she couldn’t understand the dialect. She hinted that it was different from both Egyptian and the Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) that would be the focus of my final exam. I had given up French at the end of first year. A good start.
After arriving in the middle of the night, I found a taxi, and spoke in my broken Egyptianised-Arabic to the driver! “Habibi!” he replied, seemingly impressed. I rested on my laurels: I was a master communicator. When we arrived at the Airbnb, he charged me five times the recommended price. I couldn’t argue, my language wasn’t good enough.
‘You’ll learn that the most important thing for you to do at [this] point in your life is learn. You’ll realise that fragmented pieces of information and online quotes and short videos are no substitute to a real pursuit of knowledge.’Brett Cotten, Andrew Marsham, Emma Charlesworth & Jakub Karczewski
Most people I have met tend to fall somewhere along a spectrum bordered by two extremes: those who live as though they will never die; and those who live as though they will die tomorrow. My sister, against all logic and rules of how spectrums tend to work, somehow simultaneously lived right at the edge of both of those extremes. She lived with a sense of urgency and an unquenchable thirst for life that can only be attributed, with some nostalgic romanticism, to a deep and ever-present awareness that she did not have enough time. Yet, when you look at her ambitions and her dreams, it would seem she felt that an eternity awaited her.
I know I may be biased so instead I’ll put into her own words a little gem from her short-lived blogging days which I teased her about endlessly. This specific quote is from a piece she called, ‘What do you mean you’re bored?’:
“Being unoccupied, unconstrained by social situations… then running out of things to occupy yourself with and uttering the dreadful words “I’m bored.” How could you? There are more things to do, books to read, places to travel to (if not geographically then mentally) than any of us can hope to get through in a lifetime. I understand being overwhelmed by the possibilities but running out of things to do?”
Nourhan never ran out of things to do or topics to be curious about. She pursued her interests (from cheese to 19th century Arab history) with a fiery passion. In bringing this Fund to life, you have kept a piece of that passion alive and all of us who knew and loved her are endlessly grateful. Not only because it is a legacy we know she would be proud of, but most importantly because it helps those, like Nourhan, who dream, strive and inspire with their curiosity.
It is my hope that through this Fund and others like it there is always room for that kind of curiosity and noble pursuit of knowledge in our world; and space for those who seek it. Thank you for your generosity and for helping to expand that sacred space.
The next day I made my way to Smart Business and Consulting, the only recommended language school still open (due to COVID). Layla, my teacher, half in dialect and half in French, said “Tunisian dialect is the closest to MSA!” I questioned how true this statement was as it was a common line that I’d heard about every Arabic dialect. For the next four
days, I spent between three and six hours learning MSA with her, one-onone. This included six consecutive hours that followed my consumption of a dodgy chicken shawarma wrap; we ploughed on. This whole trip was possible thanks to the financial aid from Queens’ College and the Faculty of Asian & Middle Eastern Studies (FAMES).
L-R: Simon Hartley (1988), Dr Robert Barnes (1989), Lisa Hall and Alex Ohlsson (1988) at the Ceremony of Benefactors 2022’
We are pleased to announce the completion of The Lisa Hall Postgraduate Scholarship, the first fully-endowed scholarship of its kind for students who wish to proceed to a PhD.
The College has raised in excess of £1,000,000 which will endow a full postgraduate scholarship.
This studentship will be transformative to students who would not otherwise have the means to support themselves financially during their studies. Students who cannot afford to pay or draw on family support can apply to eliminate these pressures and focus more on their studies.
At the same time, we celebrate Lisa’s 33 years as a Fellow, Graduate Tutor and the first female Vice-President and her retirement at the end of the 2021-22 academic year. The College records its debt of gratitude to Lisa, who gave a very generous initial gift and to all the donors who have supported the next generation of postgraduate students at Queens’.
“Reading about The Lisa Hall Postgraduate Scholarship, I completely agree with the positive life-changing potential on offer to those with access to Queens’ as a postgraduate. Lisa taught me how to solve problems, to communicate clearly, and to enjoy the experience of a Cambridge education enriched through exposure to Queens’ as a student. Thoughtful and forward thinking, that is Lisa – with a winning can-do attitude that inspires!”
Prof. Lisa Hall & Prof. Julia GogJohn Cohen (1921) was an influential translator of European literature and the editor of several seminal literary anthologies. Cohen is a major contributor to the ‘Latin American boom’ of the 1960s and he translated and promoted the works of authors including Gabriel García Márquez, Carlos Fuentes and Jorge Luis Borges. Cohen built his collection of 1,675 books from gifts from authors and purchases made during visits to Spain and Argentina in the 1950s, and to Mexico and Cuba in the 1960s and 70s. It includes signed copies of works by writers of the first Cuban revolutionary generation, works by female authors previously unrecorded in the West, an extensive collection of Soviet Russian literature and studies on literary criticism and poetry, the pre-Columbian American past and Nahuatl literature. His son, Mark Cohen (1955), returned to Queens’ to view the collection of works in the recently-refurbished Armitage Room.
Donors to The Streetly Fund in Natural Sciences were invited to Queens’ for a dinner in the OSCR to celebrate the fund’s completion. John Streetly’s family attended the dinner and are pictured above in front of the sundial, replicating a photo of John in the same location in the early 1950s. In the photo is Mike Streetly (1983)
We are delighted to have received an immensely valuable and remarkable donation of four first editions of seminal works in the history of computing and mathematics, from former Queens’ computer science student, Tara Symeonides (2001). Mathematics titles comprise Jacob Bernoulli’s posthumously published Ars Conjectandi (1713) on probability theory, and Carl Friedrich Gauss’ Disquisitiones Arithmeticae (1801), a textbook of number theory. In addition, we have John von Neumann and Oskar Morgenstern’s famous Theory of Games and Economic Behavior (1944) on which modern-day game theory is based, together with a volume containing Luigi Federico Menabrea’s ground-breaking article, ‘Notions sur la machine analytique de M. Charles Babbage’ (1842). As the first published account of Charles Babbage’s Analytical Engine and its design, this article described the first ever examples of computer programs. Now catalogued and searchable via iDiscover, these books are in the Old Library where they perfectly complement our existing collection of historic mathematical works. Together with Tara’s magnificent gift, we plan to exhibit a selection of these to students and College Members over the coming year. We are most grateful to Tara for her generous gift.
This list comprises gifts to Queens’ College between 1st July 2021–30th June 2022.
Every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of the following information. We are grateful to all who have donated in the last year. Any gifts made after June 2022 will appear on the 2023 list next autumn.

After a seventy year connection with Queens’, I can safely express an opinion. I have always regarded Queens’ as a place of learning, devoted to the pursuit of excellence, for the benefit of the country and the world at large. Queens’ has now become global, but has always retained a close involvement with its alumnae et alumni and friends. It is open and welcoming. Once a member of college, always a member of college.
Over the last two and a half years with Covid 19, we have all experienced times of real difficulty and danger. In the first century AD, the Roman poet, Horace, once said, “Tempora mutantur, et nos mutamus in illis”. Times are changing and we are changing with them. Not only must we change, but the College is in fact changing. With the generous support of alumnae et alumni and friends, whom the College is so fortunate to have, the President and Fellows are paving the way to a happier, safer and brighter future.

I am very grateful to the Fellowship for awarding me The Grace Prendergast Sports Busary and to Dr Hargreaves for his generous donation that made the award possible. This year, I competed with the University Sailing Club (CUCrC) as part of one of their Team Racing Teams. I competed with the Team going to 9 different team racing events including University events, the RYA Team Racing Championships, the Wilson Trophy, and the BUSA Finals held this year in Bristol. I also competed at the RS400 National Championships this August in Berwick whilst continuing to compete in both ‘big’ and ’small’ boats more locally at home on Strangford Lough. Sailing has been a huge part of my time at Queens’, allowing me to escape the ‘bubble’ for the weekends, and get away from the deadlines and the pressures that go along with being a student. This support is massively appreciated when it comes to alleviating some of the financial pressures associated with the entry fees, accommodation and transport costs going to events which can quickly stack up.

I feel incredibly privileged to have had the opportunity to attend Queens’ whilst reading for an MPhil in Land Economy. I had such a stimulating time both educationally and with meeting lifelong friends, in particular, my badminton partner whom we had a number of successes when representing the college in the Ladies 1st Team. I loved my walk to our practise sessions which was via Walnut and Old Court and over the Mathematical Bridge! Such extremely fond memories… hence why I make a monthly contribution towards our special College, as I deeply hope that it will help towards providing future students with the opportunity to flourish and to cherish their time at Queens’ too.

This Society recognises our members who have generously left legacies to the College in their will. Your gift can be allocated to any project. To date legacies have helped provide postgraduate awards, establish a fund to look after and maintain the College gardens, digitise manuscripts in the Old Library, renovate the College’s historic buildings and to acquire new boats for the Boat Club.

Mr Rowan Kitt Development Director & Fellow Ms Francé Davies Head of Department & Stewardship Manager Ms Emma Charlesworth Senior Development Officer Ms Rebecca Sharkey Development Officer (Regular Giving)Student welfare is critically important. If it wasn’t for Mairi Hurrell, I couldn’t be here today (meningococcal septicaemia). Her name against this fund is deserved recognition for the impact she has made on students’ wellbeing.
Atherton, UK
I owe so much to Queens’ - the education, the experience, all the fun, the boat club and meeting so many new friends. Now, 30 years later, we still connect and my fond memories of Queens’ are still so strong. It feels like part of my DNA.
Heggedal, Norway
Congratulations to the College on its impressive efforts to broaden support for students.
Saffron Walden, UK
Delighted to support Queens’ Giving Day and especially the Mairi Hurrell Fund. I remember Mairi’s kindness and dedication well - I was an international student away from home for the first time and Mairi was just brilliant in her role.
Harare, Zimbabwe
It’s quite a while ago now, but I do have fond memories of my time at Queens’.
Amazing place and incredible memories. Happy to support future generations.
Toronto, Canada
As a former MCR Welfare and LGBTQ+ Officer, I hope that the Mairi Hurrell Fund will provide a much-required resource to support and promote mental well-being for all Queens’ members in times of need. Best wishes from Shanghai! Shanghai, China
Great to be able to give back to Queens’ which holds very special memories and had such a positive impact on my life both professionally and personally (met my husband there and we are still together 25 years later!)
Singapore
Best College in the world! Hamburg, Germany
I wish our College members and students all the best from Aotearoa New Zealand. We here are proud of our students and their achievements. God bless you all. Auckland, New Zealand
At Queens’ I spent some of the most formative and enjoyable years of my life. This opportunity should be given to all deserving incoming students, irrespective of origin or financial means.
