We publish short summary obituaries in the Record of Queens' mem.bers who have died, where information is available to us.

The Revd Canon J.A. BURNESS ( 1 9 10) aged 102!/2. John Burness, one of our last remaining links with pre-1914 Queens' , was surely our oldest member and perbaps the longest-lived Queensman of ail time. The son of C.M.S. Missionaries, he came to Queens' from King's School, Ely, and then went on to Ridley Hall before ordination in 1 9 1 4. After curacies at Liverpool and Derby, he went out to Canada as incumbent of St Andrew's Mission, Lake Saskatoon, returning to England in 1 924.

After a time in Suffolk, he was Vicar of St Paul 's, Derby, until ill­ health( ! ) prompted bis return to S u ffolk in 1 929 as Rector of Helmingham, where be remained until his retirement in 1 960 to Witnesham, near Ipswich. There he continued regularly 10 conduct services until the summer of 1993. Bumess was a man of deep faith and phlegmatic temperament with a capacity to make lasting impression . A talented artist and a great lover of wild life (be even invented a n mousetrap to catch rnice without hurting them! ). he was also a keen gardener and bee-keeper . iterests he maimained activeJy until the last months of his life.

Rangoon University and came to Queens· to continue bis studies.

Called to the Bar by Lincoln• s Inn in 1 925. be returned to Buima to hold legal posts, including membership of the Bunna Legislative CounciJ from 1935, until the outbreak of war. He remained undercover in Bmma, thinly disguised as a gardener, during the Japanese occupation doing much to mitigate the bard hips of British intemees. After the war, he was Chief J udge of the Rangoon Civil Court until B urma ' s independence i n 1948 when h e became Ambassador t o both ationalist and Communist China and subsequently represented Bunna at the United ations. A judge of the Supreme Court in 1953, he held with distinction the post of Chief Justice from 1 957 until his imprisonment in 1 962 following bis refusai to co-operate w ith the new military govemment. He remained in protective custody' until 1968. He lived quietly in Rangoon after his release and in spite of retirement and ill­ health kept alive bis interest in world affairs. A scholar, poet and wit, .known to his friends as "Oncle Monty", U Myint Thein was a judge of rare insight and forbearance, a diplomat of ski li and resource, and a man of courage, spirit and great generosity.
