The New Development and the College Appeal Phase One of Cripps Court is now virtually complete: not entirely so, because ''snagging" continues and odd items like missing windows remain to. be finished. However, the last four years have taught us patience and our expectations of what is reasonable for a building contractor to perform are much more modest than when we started.

The external structure of Phase Two is also nearly complete and Messrs Laings, the contractors, will shortly leave the site and cease to have any responsibility for further work. Our priorities will then be to make the buildings in Phase Two windand weather-proof and, gradually, to complete the internal work in the new Dining Hall and Kitchens, the Cloister as yet unpaved and, ultimately, the residential rooms in this phase. How long this will take one cannot say at this stage for it depends upon a re-organization of the whole method of work and, of course, upon the availability of materials and money. However, there is every reason to hope that progress with Phase Two will continue no more slowly than hitherto. Certainly the new garden lawn within the Court will be laid by the Spring: this we have under our own control and can do with our own staff, rn that predictions can be made with safety.

Phase Three will also be completed in due course: this is the very firm intention of both the College and the Cripps Foundation, but, obviously, its timing will have to depend upon progress with Phase Two. Meanwhile, we shall do our best to make the area between Cripps Court and the Fisher Building ( the area to be built over in Phase Three) as presentable as possible, covering the mud with a little grass and tidying up the paths.

The fruits of the College Appeal are now very

much in evidence. There is increasing evidence that the ability to offer all our undergraduates three years in College is attracting applicants to Queens'.

Many of the costs arising from the new development have been met from the Appeal. Phase One is furnished, and furnished well. The extension of central heating throughout" Fisher is nearly complete, bringing relief to the extremities and the pockets of its residents, for whom a gas-fire in January represented only a token opposition to the cold. The re-decoration and re-lighting of the Chapel is finished and very successful, enabling a whole range of lighting effects to be achieved by lamps which are most discreetly concealed. The whole length of the river wall has been repaired and, with luck, should last for many years. The gardens have been enhanced by an additional six seats, the gift of Queensmen graduating in 1950, and a good number of trees have been planted.

The total sum raised by the Appeal now stands at ÂŁ238,739, still short, alas, of the quarter-million which seemed well within reach last year. A supplementary list of contributors is included with this Record, giving the names of those who have contributed since the publication of the main list last year.

A number of Queensmen have had reservations about the new Cripps Court and for that reason have felt unable to support the main College Appeal.

I hope that they may be attracted by the special appeal for the Old Library now launched by the Library Committee, with the support of the Governing Body. The Librarian has written elsewhere in this Record about this appeal and the supplementary list of contributors gives separately those who have already responded.

The Society The return from sabbatical leave of Professor Ramsay, Mr Hart and Dr Diggle was welcomed by the Fellowship, for they had all been missed during the previous academic year. The current year is in fact Professor Ramsay's final year, since he retires in July, and I find it difficult to imagine the Fellowship without him.

Arthur Ramsay came from Caius College to become a Fellow of Queens' in 1934, spent the War years in what is described as an "experimental establishment" as a Major in the Royal Artillery, and returned to Queens' in 1945. Whatever else he may have accomplished during those years, from the College's point of view his finest accomplishment was his marriage to Helen, whose charm and 4

friendship we have enjoyed ever since. His scientific distinction brought an F.R.S. in I 955, a Readership in 1959, a Chair in Comparative Physiology in 1969, and a reputation for getting men through the Natural Sciences Tripos which can be described as successful beyond any reasonable expectation. He served as Steward during the difficult years of rationing and as a most effective Vice-President from 1970-1974, a service which earned my lasting gratitude. Few men could emulate his ability to bring together College Officers and resolve problems, using tact, shrewd judgment and gin in subtle combination. He retires to his croft in the Highlands with our affection and good wishes and in the certainty that he will be sorely missed.

There have been a number of very welcome additions to the Fellowship. Dr Walker, a University Demonstrator in the Computer Laboratory and a Queensman, has been elected into an Official Fellowship and appointed a College Lecturer in Natural Sciences. He has already become a most useful member of the Building Committee, acquiring a knowledge of the new central heating system which is well beyond the call of duty but quite invaluable. Dr Ellory, a graduate of Bristol University and a Lecturer in the Physiological Laboratory in Cambridge, has been elected into an Official Fellowship and a College Lectureship in Physiology.

Department of Biochemistry. His research work is concerned with membrane-protein interactions and he will bring added strength to the biochemistry teaching. Mr Davies, the Research Fellow in English, has been given leave to intermit a term this year, because of illness, but we hope to see a speedy recovery and a return to Queens' in the Easter Term.

Mr A. D. Browne continues to keep a lively interest in the College from 3 Grange Road, where he welcomes visitors and continues to act as the "patron" of the Boat Club.

Just as the composition of the Fellowship changes, so too do the College Officers. Mr Napier has become a Tutor, Dr Coaker has taken over as Steward, Mr Hughes has become Acting Junior Bursar, and Mr Overy has become both Prrelector and Secretary of the Governing Body.

It is perhaps appropriate that I make some mention of the tasks which face the Society. The traditional tasks of providing a healthy, happy College with what is needed for a successful academic community of course continue, essentially unchanged. The scale of those tasks, and consequently the effort required from Fellows, and above all College Officers, has certainly increased.

We are physically a bigger College than before, and the tasks of management are considerable. In addition to the burden of seeing the new development through to completion, the College faces difficulties arising from inflation, just like any other large concern, and our costs, employment policies, catering and housing arrangements and programmes for repairs have to be kept under continuing review. At the same time, since we are not just a commercial business, the Tutors and Directors of Studies have to maintain and improve standards of admission and of teaching. In addition, the Fellows have their obligations in respect of University teaching and research. It is as a tribute to the Fellowship that I would say that, in all these tasks, the standard of performance is high and that it is an extremely attractive society of which to be a member.

Professor Ramsey, retiring after over forty years in the Fellowship

To assist with the Economics teaching, Mr Cosh, a Queensman with Treasury experience, has been appointed a Bye-Fellow for a period of two years, during which time he will in addition to teaching pursue his own research in Cambridge. We also have two new Research Fellows. The first is Dr Smith, another Queensman and a research assistant in the Engineering Department; he is the first holder of the Godfrey Mitchell Research Fellowship about which I wrote last year. Dr Smith's research is in the field of metal fatigue but he is also a keen mountaineer and plans this summer to take a group of Queens' students to the Arctic to learn another kind of fatigue. The second is Dr Houslay, a graduate of the University of Wales and of King's College, Cambridge, who is an I.CJ. Fellow in the

The Fabric Mr Challis as our new Clerk of Works has replaced Mr Dunnington, who has retired after many years of devoted service to the College. During the year Mr Brewis has joined us as boiler-engineer to supervise the running of much equipment new and old. The essential maintenance and repair work continues in the College and most noticeable has been the re-decoration of all the rooms in the Erasmus building, and the Essex staircase. Less obvious, except to the occupants of the rooms, but perhaps more important, has been the completion of re-wiring of Fisher and Essex, and the start made on Friars: the importance of this work to the 5

safety of the buildings, especially from fire risk, needs no stress.

Although most of the more visible work on Cripps Court, on the Chapel and on the river walls has been done by outside contractors, the consequent work for our own staff is considerable.

It is still difficult in many small ways to adjust to the move of the main Porter's Lodge last year to new quarters at the east end of Fisher; the arrangements for both porters and undergraduates are however much improved and in another year's time very few of the latter will realise how this part of the College lived for five hundred years.

Old Library Appeal Our Old Library is one of the best known in the country. We have a magnificent collection of about 20,000 volumes, being particularly strong in Theology, early science - among first editions are works by Galileo and Newton - and belles lettres.

We also have a fine group ofincunabula and a large number of books with elaborate renaissance bindings. And there is something else which makes the Library a priceless asset. It has grown in the same place for over five hundred years. It is still in the original room and the bases of the older bookshelves are made out of the medieval reading desks.

There survive inventories and records of gifts from the fifteenth century onwards, which means that it is possible to describe in some detail the development of a library during the English renaissance.

Money is needed for two purposes. First we must protect what is possibly our most valuable asset from the dangers of fire (always a threat in very old buildings) and theft. We have been investigating the possibility of installing a new system which would extinguish fire by flooding the Library with gas. This, unlike the traditional water-based extinguishers, would do no damage to the contents. And we have also considered putting in burglar alarms. Secondly, with a Library as valuable and important as ours, it is imperative that we have a reliable catalogue of its contents. A subject catalogue was published by T. H. Horne in 1827; but it is now inaccurate and incomplete. A new catalogue was begun about twelve years ago, and there is now a shelf list and author catalogue which are in sight of completion. Being a poor College, we cannot afford to employ a full-time professional Librarian, but we would like to engage a temporary librarian for the two years needed to complete the task of cataloguing.

The cost of installing a fire protection system and burglar alarm will not be less than £7,000. The cost of completing the catalogue may be as much as £5,000. We therefore need about £12,000. The 6

College itself has offered £3,500, and we are trying to raise the rest by appealing to the generosity of private benefactors and those Trusts which specialise in Libraries. We did not think that it would be reasonable to apply to those members of the College who responded to the College's recent New Building Appeal. But some members of the College did not feel that they could contribute to such an appeal, and it is to them that we have applied. Letters of appeal have already been despatched, and the initial response has been encouraging, as can be seen from the supplementary list of contributors to the College Appeal included with this Record. But we are still short of our target. We should be delighted to hear from any member of the College who would like to make a contribution to this appeal, whether by way of a single donation or by covenant. The Librarian will be pleased to send further details and a covenant form on request.

Reginalia: Frank Rutter 1876-1937 • A Centenary Appreciation _/ Cambridge, and especially Queens', should be more grateful to Frank Rutter than it has been in recent years. Although he is almost forgotten as an art critic, and none of his two dozen books remains in print, the visitor to Cambridge is still likely to choose as the best inexpensive guide book, the Illustrated Guide to Cambridge, little realising that the text, although revised constantly (most recently by the late Dr. Frederick Brittain), is essentially Frank Rutter's of I 912! More interestingly, Rutter has left evocative memories of life at Queens' in the '90's - in his autobiography (Since I was twentyfive) and in that delightful period piece, 'Varsity Types.

Francis Vane Phipson Rutter was born on 17th February 1876, the youngest son of a London solicitor (who numbered Ruskin among his clients), and entered Queens' from Merchant Taylors' School in January I 896. Of his four years (for the Oriental Languages Tripos) here, Rutter is disparagingly humorous, and his contemporary, the architect C. H. Reilly, once highlighted his career by saying "He was an expert on the banjo". Much of the life of those 'Varsity types, the hearties and the aesthetes, the 'Swot', the 'Blood', and the 'Pi' men, alternating afternoon teas with games of 'footer', might seem remote and unattractive to today's sophisticated and more serious-minded undergraduates, but the undeniable delight derived from 'rags', mock funerals and smoking-concerts is perhaps to be envied, certainly as related by Rutter.

Thanks to the chance survival of an annotated copy of 'Varsity Types in the College Library, the characters in "Scenes from College Life" can be identified. The President (Ryle), Dean (Gray, College historian), Senior Tutor (Arthur Wright), Fellows, porters and even bedders of the late '90's are here depicted, as well as the bonfire of furniture that took place in Old Court on 22nd February 1898, after the Queens' boat made four bumps.

With the exception of Ryle, few of the senior members are depicted sympathetically, but that this is due less to Rutter's dubious career than to current attitudes is corroborated by Professor Reilly in his own autobiography, where he cites inadequacies of College life in addition to the financial and physical (luxuries such as fixed baths and water closets were unknown then): When I think of the twenty young men of my year, mostly from restricted homes and environments, who arrived at Queens', and of the excitement and hope the new adventure meant to them, the almost total failure of the dons to touch their life at any point, in any inspiring way, seems to me one of the grossest misuses of position and authority it is possible to imagine.

There was, however, much in compensation for irrepressible undergraduates like Rutter, and his experiences and contacts at Cambridge served him well. Friendship with actors, writers and artists (including Stephen Haweis and Gerald Kelly, later P.R.A.) was supplemented by regular vacation trips to Paris, and here he laid the foundations for his future career as an art critic, by visiting the Salon and other exhibitions, meeting Sickert, Sisley and Rodin, even glimpsing in the Cafe Procope the pathetic figure of Oscar Wilde.

Journalism of various sorts followed after he left Cambridge in 1899; a sub-editor at the Daily Mail, editor of To-day (the first in England to publish Jack London's work), and art critic to the Sunday Special. By the good fortune that Rutter seemed to enjoy, this paper merged with the Sunday Times, and he stayed on as art critic - for over thirty years!

With this security, Rutter's later career was one of freelance writing, with a regular flow of books, chiefly on art, and various posts with ephemeral magazines - as well as the more substantial one as Curator of Leeds Art Gallery from 1912 to 19 I 7.

Unfortunately, little of his writing has survived the academic-based boom and rise in standards in art history since the war; Rutter's main output of little popular books, such as those on Rossetti, Whistler, or Evolution in Modern Art, is of high quality in the writing and comment, but such books supplied a current need and had short published lives, ending in the secondhand bookshop. Others deserve to survive - notably his El Greco (1930), which was sadly and inexplicably missing from the bibliographies in the catalogue to the recent Royal Academy exhibition of Spanish painting; even the popular histories of art and 'part-works' to which

Rutter contributed (for example Modem Masterpieces (1935-6)) are amongst the best of their kind.

On the practical side - as an early champion of French Impressionism and a lifelong supporter of contemporary British painting - Rutter achieved his greatest fame and claim to remembrance. His friendship with Sickert and the Paris dealers before the First World War kept him in touch with the avant-garde in Britain, and he will always be remembered as the founder in 1908 of the Allied Artists Association, an exhibiting body organized by the contributing artists themselves. As editor of Art News (1909-12), art critic to the New Weekly ( 1914), and co-founder and editor of Art and Letters (1917-20), he pursued a policy of support for the great flowering of modern art in Britain at that time - both the older school of the New English Art Club and London Group, and the younger Vorticists. These activities earned him the companionship of Harold Gilman and Charles Ginner, Eliot and Pound, the Sitwells, the young Herbert Read, and even the volatile Wyndham Lewis. Along with P. G. Konody, Rutter was the only art critic to be 'blessed' by Blast!

Rutter did great service to the unjustly neglected wealth of British painting after the War, in his books and articles, and was still doing so in the Sunday Times up to a week before his death in April 1937.

Surprisingly, he has not been included in the DNB.---......._ "' but few can have done more to encourage the arts in England in the early part of this century, or so happily, for he had, as the Times obituarist pointed out, "the great gift of enthusiasm".

The Library

The Librarian was on Sabbatical leave during the Lent and Easter terms. Dr Riley-Smith was Acting Librarian. The Old Library was visited by the Edward Capell Society. Professor and Mrs Gold by have continued their work on the preservation of leather bindings. Dr Riley-Smith compiled a catalogue of our most precious books. The small room which adjoins the War Memorial Library, and which formerly housed the telephone exchange, has been adapted into an office for the use of the junior Assistant Librarians. We have been able to continue the policy of acquiring all books which are recommended on Faculty reading lists for Part I Tripos courses. Perhaps as a result, more books were borrowed during 1975 than in any previous year.

Notice will be found elsewhere in this edition of the Record of an appeal which has been launched to meet two urgent requirements in the Old Library: the completion of its catalogue and the installation of fire-detection equipment.

There was a service of music and readings, entitled "A Celebration of Faith" on 16 February, and the Advent Carol Service on 30 November.

Miss Watling continued to help us with the chaplaincy work until the end of the calendar year, when she left Cambridge to enter St. Michael's Convent, Richmond.

For the third year running, a Queens' College Christian House-Party was held, immediately after the end of the Michaelmas Term. After two years at Bishop Woodford House, Ely, this year we stayed at Hengrave Hall, near Bury St. Edmunds.

The College Union

The College Union, as a Union of Fellows, graduates and undergraduates, has the task of "furthering the corporate life of the College". At the start of 1975 an important new means to this end became available, with the opening of the Junior and Middle Common Rooms in Cripps Court. The new bar increased its sales enormously, showing how quickly it became a centre of students' social life.

Snack food was made available, greatly improved in quality and variety during the year, and this no doubt added to the bar's popularity.

The College Union continued to finance the activities of all the Amalgamated Clubs. Fourteen different sports were organised within the College, and people taking part in activities not organised at College level were able to obtain from the Union a rebate on University club subscriptions. Other, nonsporting societies continued to flourish. The St Bernard Society was brought back to life, and the most recent application to join the Amalgamated Clubs came from the College's tiddlywinks players.

Food in Hall was again one of the most contentious issues of the year. No one wanted to end the tradition of communal eating in Hall. The discontent was over the compulsory system of charging for meals, which had to be eaten in very crowded conditions and which, because the old kitchens were still being used, were often poorly cooked. One day, hopefully, with the new kitchens and dining hall due to open in Cripps Court, the College will come together to eat because the food is good and the tables are not too crowded, not because of financial compulsion.

Throughout the year the College Union tried to operate as a medium of dialogue between undergraduates, graduates and Fellows on a great variety of issues. These ranged from purely administrative matters, such as the allocation of rooms and putting refrigerators in gyp rooms, to issues of great importance such as co-residence or the plans to publish a directory of jobs abroad for students waiting to come up to Queens'. Towards the end of the year the College Union took a major part in the debate on the future of the Cambridge Students Union, which was crippled by debt and supported by few students or colleges. Queens' put forward

proposals to restructure C.S.U. so that its powers and responsibility would be channelled through college JCR committees. These proposals were backed by a generous offer of. money from Queens' student funds, with the intention of helping to create a stronger and more representative central Students Union in Cambridge.

Within Queens' itself the College Union has not been as strong or as representative as it could have been during the past year, despite advantages such as the new Common Rooms and the fact that all undergraduates now have rooms in College. One reason for this may be that in the past the strength of the Union depended too much on the individual dynamism of its president, and it has never been forced to rely on any general interest, criticism or support among College members. If the corporate life of the College is to be furthered, the individuals on the Council of the Union must encourage and respond to reactions from the whole College, and must learn to work together rather than rely on a single personality.

In the face of vigorous competition from ten other colleges, Queens' successfully managed to sell all four hundred double tickets for the Ball with little difficulty. This was due to substantial support from both old and present Queensmen.

The Ball, held on 10 June 197 5, was an extravagant affair, with full dinner available, including the traditional Boar's Head, caviar and salmon. Champagne, whisky and lager were freely available throughout the evening. Entertainment was provided by a variety of artists, from a harpist to one of Britain's premier pop bands, Stockridge.

As always, the College provided an idyllic setting for the Ball - Cloister Court was the scene of a play by Erasmus; Walnut Tree and Friars were covered by huge and gaily-lit marquees. Other features included roulette, discotheques, a charity tombola, a piper, fire-eaters, Morris dancers, medieval musicians, films, cabaret and a concert pianist.

The. Ball was a social and financial success due to the industry of the Committee and the support of the College. We offer our thanks to all concerned as we look forward to 1977.

The St Margaret Society gave two Sunday evening Chapel concerts during the Lent Term 1974, the popularity of the music of J. J. Quantz thus being sustained. Organ recitals were given by Malcolm Archer (Jesus), John Scott (St John's), lain Ledingham (Queens'), John Kitchen (Clare), Margaret Phillips (London), Edward Higginbottom (Corpus Christi), Peter King (Queens'). The President and Mrs Bowett kindly invited us to give another concert in the Long Gallery. The Society followed this with a concert in February in Little St Mary's Church. Paul Hubbard performed a Sammartini recorder concerto and the Chapel Choir sang Bach's Wachet Auf and Schutz's Seven Last Words, with Elizabeth Gardner, Jacek Strauch, Julian Clarkson, Robert Chilcott and Niall Hoskin as soloists. The main concert of the term was a highly successful performance of Brahms' Requiem, given in the Guildhall, with Elizabeth Gardner and Jacek Strauch, and conducted by Iain Ledingham.

Organ recitals were continued in the Easter Term, given by Iain Ledingham, Peter King (Queens'), John Clough (Gloucester), Richard Lowry (Coventry) and Andrew Newberry (Peterborough). The May Week concert included the premiere of Professor Beament's Oddy in Troy land.

The 'Mag Soc' achieved the heights of glory in, of all things, the Boat Club. Colin Hartree, Brian Jones, Matthew Peters, James Jackson, Dr Green, Richard Tuckett, Tim Wilcox, David Whitgift and John Bickley (cox) were coached by I. Rubin and formed the only College boat to gain their oars in the May Bumps.

The Michaelmas Term began with a Chapel concert, followed the next Sunday by the Freshmen's concert. Professor Beament's Birthday Concert took place in the Combination Room on the 16th of November. The past year has been a successful one for the Bats.

There has been a great revival of interest in the Society and a striking increase in both the technical and artistic standards of productions.

A Midsummer Night's Dream, the May Week production, was our most expensive and expansive ever. It was seen by over 400 people each night who were seated on a massive scaffolding structure built by ¡Bats technicians. Artistically all credit is due to the cast, most of whom were highly talented and established members of Cambridge theatre, making this production their swan song in their third year.

The next production was Weiss's exhilarating Marat/Sade, a difficult but very powerful piece of modern theatre. This was beautifully presented in the Christ's New Theatre, and was a credit to cast, director, technicians, and producer alike. Beautifully staged, it combined exciting lighting, make-up and costume with interesting tableaux, song, music and high emotion, and was another considerable artistic and financial success.

The pantomime again appeared at Christmas, bringing humour to the local schools and drunken bawdiness to the College performance, and providing a fitting conclusion to a highly successful year.

St Bernard Society After lying comatose for two years, the College debating society was restored to health on November 5th last year. Twenty-five people met in the Angevin Room to toast the future of the Society and debated the motion "That this House would blow up Parliament", which was flamboyantly proposed by Mr Praful Patel. Mr Ben Nicholls repljed with the sentiments of Empire and the socks of Tim Brooke-Taylor. Mr Michael Raw defenced the motion with a very witty speech.

Mr Ken Costa attacked it with his usual eloquence and humorous effrontery. In the meantime three bottles of port were consumed and consequently there were floor speeches from Mr David Sedgwick, Mr Michael Davidson, Mr David Branson, and others.

In short, a very pleasant evening was had by all.

We intend to hold four debates during the rest of the University year and that the Society will continue to provide opportunity for amateur apolitical debating within the "college.

Having ended 1974 with an impressive debt, the present committee decided to operate on a more commercial level and hopefully attract a larger audience.

The Lent Term began well with The Satan Bug and The Thomas Crown Affair setting the trend for the term. Borsalino drew the '20's addicts and was followed by The Forbidden Planet in a successful attempt to lure the College's sci-fi fiends from their seclusion. Unfortunately Nick Ray's The Lusty Men only managed to produce single numbers in a throw-back to the previous year's style. The audience revived itself for Sam Peckinpah's bloodthirsty Straw Dogs - standing room only. The term ended with To Have And To Have Not. A healthy excess of daylight prevented any Easter Term activity.

The Hali's Sunday night peace and quiet was shattered on October 12th with the return to full power of QFS and a car chase thinly disguised as social comment in Vanishing Point. The Michaelmas Term continued with M.A.S.H., and a young American by the riame of Ario Guthrie joked his way through Alice's Restaurant. Goldfinger

followed, at which point the sound system collapsed. Hasty patching up allowed The Getaway and Bullitt (an inadvertent 'season' of Steve McQueen car crashing extravaganzas) to continue the programme. One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich and Hang 'em High finished the year off.

Queens' Bench 1974-7S.

The College Law Society has made encouraging progress in the last year, a trend which it is hoped will continue. For the first time, law students from Newnham College have been able to join the Society and it is this fact, coupled with greater interest within Queens' itself, which has led to much larger attendances at recent meetings.

The meetings of the Lent Term 1975 were addressed by Mrs Helen Napier, Chief Inspector Saunders and Professor Stein, who spoke on "Crime in a Magistrate's Court"; by Professor Wedderburn, Cassel Professor of Commercial Law in the University of London; by Professor Coote from the University of Auckland, who was resident in Queens' last year; and finally by Mr Pearl.

The Annual Dinner was held in April and the guest was Dr B. A. Callingham, Tutor to the majority of present-day law students in the College.

In the Michaelmas Term of the 1975/6 academic year, Professor Stein gave a talk entitled "Buried Treasure in Shetland : a Legal Saga". The second meeting was addressed by Dr Foudes, a consultant psychiatrist from Rampton Hospital, and the third

by Mr Hussey, Senior Legal Adviser to the Company Affairs Directorate of the C.B.I. The final meeting's speaker was Inspector Smith, an officer from the Prosecutions Department of the Nottingham Police, who provoked lengthy discussion on the role and attitudes of the police.

There has already this year been a visit to Rampton Hospital and it is proposed to repeat last year's venture in taking a group to the Royal Courts of Justice, the Old Bailey and one of the Inns of Court.

The Society would like to thank the President, Professor Stein and Messrs Tiley, Napier and Gray for their support in the last year and it is hoped that the increase in interest will be continued in the coming months, 1975-76

The College History Society continues to enjoy a vigorous existence, manifested in the very considerable attendance figures at the twice-termly lectures, to which speakers from widely varying historical fields are invited. Less academic enterprises are also undertaken, usually with the assistance of liberal supplies of alcohol, to pit the diverse skills of the society against those of the rest of the College. Dr Riley-Smith remains the benevolent inspiration behind the society, ensuring the continuity of its proceedings.

The opening meeting of l 975, the society's 299th, comprised a paper delivered by Professor Gallagher of Trinity College and entitled "Early Steps in Decolonization". The paper took as its theme the decline and fall of the British Empire, and focused upon a tendency in the early years of the twentieth century to retain territory simply for its own sake.

The Lent term I 975 was further enlivened by darts and soccer matches against the rest of the College. In the former, the society emerged triumphant by the margin of 4-3, a victory attributed by eye-witnesses to an 11 gallon barrel of Adnams Ale. After a gallant struggle, the society Jost 0-2 at soccer but was nevertheless over the moon at the result.

Dr Baker's nine months research in southern India provided the background for the opening meeting of the summer term. His paper, "The Ground Floor of Empire", examined the nature of British administration in India during the nineteenth century and up till 194 7. Discussion afterwards centred on the relationship between communism and nationalism in present-day India.

The academic year 1975/76 began with what Dr Riley-Smith described as his 'pot-boiler' on "The Port of Acre", an interesting historical investigation accompanied by a fine selection of slides. For the second meeting of the Michaelmas Term, Dr Richard Clutterbuck from the University of Exeter, visiting Cambridge to deliver the Rees-Knowles lectures, came to Queens' to give an additional paper entitled "Riots and Strikes in England and Wales since the Eighteenth Century". Dr Clutterbuck's personal research provided a fruitful basis for a stimulating and controversial discussion, which he handled with humour and concern.

The Medical Society has continued its recent evolution and completed another very successful year. In the Lent Term there were meetings on the subjects of "Some Investigations into Cancer", "The Rolling Stone", and the topical problem of "Some Clinical Aspects of Embryo Transplantation".

In the Michaelmas Term 1975 our first meeting was addressed on "Sleep, Mood, and Drugs" and we were pleased to be able to welcome along an audience from a variety of disciplines, as well as medics and vets. We also had stimulating talks on "Medicine in China", and "Drug Reactions and Interactions". The highlight of the term was, as usual, the Annual Dinner, with Dr Hardy of the Physiology Department as the guest speaker. Our thanks are due to the Vice-Presidents, especially Dr Bull, for their help throughout the year, and we look forward to a promising programme for next term.

The Christian Union in Cambridge exists on two levels. At a University level, the Cambridge InterCollegiate Christian Union (C.I.C.C.U.) provides Biblical teaching of high quality to students from

all colleges. The College Christian Union which is affiliated to C.I.C.C.U. aims to provide teaching and fellowship on a less formal scale, and unites Christians in common service.

One of the memorable events of the year on a University level was an excellent series of expositions of Matthew 5-7, the 'Sermon on the Mount'.

This series, delivered weekly throughout the Easter term by the Rev. Don Carson, a Canadian pastor doing research in Cambridge, gave an invaluable insight into the application of Christ's teaching to everyday situations, together with the relevance of the Christian faith to the modern world.

In the College, the examination of our faith in Christ, together with the sharing of this faith with others, remained the aim of the Christian Union throughout the year. This was, in part, attempted by our regular programme of lunch meetings, held every Sunday, at which a variety of speakers, from Queens' and elsewhere, gave talks on a wide selection of subjects, with titles ranging from 'Christians and the Media' to 'Why read the Old Testament?'. In addition, the activities of the Christian Union included a meeting for prayer on Wednesday evenings, and a number of small groups meeting to study together the meaning and relevance of the Bible.

Apart from these activities during term time, a short houseparty was organised at a farmhouse at Stathern, Leicestershire, just before the beginning of the Michaelmas term. This, apart from providing an enjoyable exercise in basic living, gave also an invaluable opportunity to meet together for fellowship in a different atmosphere, and to consider and plan the activities of the following term.

At the Freshers' Squash the Rev. John Marsh, curate at St. Matthew's in Cambridge, spoke on one of the central issues of the Christian faith, Christ's death. Indeed, it is one of the purposes of the Christian Union to demonstrate the importance of this fact, in relation to every aspect of our lives.

Theatre was organized, to see the dress rehearsal of a production of Francis Durbridge's Suddenly at Home by the Pye Amateur Dramatic Society. The Group, now in its second year, was started for the purpose of enabling students to visit old people in Cambridge, and provide company for them. The main work of the Group is in regular weekly or fortnightly visiting of an old person or couple by each member, and strong friendships are often formed. In addition, tea parties have been organized once a term in conjunction with similar groups in other Colleges, and these have provided rare opportunities for old people, many housebound, to go out and enjoy themselves, aided by

As in previous years, CAMPUS, an organisation run mainly by undergraduates from Queens', held a number of children's summer holiday camps in North Wales and on the South Coast. The children taken were those that we felt would benefit most by the experience - members of deprived or unstable households in the slum areas of Liverpool and London. The tremendous success of the venture was measured not only by the happiness shown by the kids, but also by the relief and rest given to the parents during their offspring's absence. · This year, Queens' undergraduates hope to run these camps again, but inflation and the recent cuts in local government expenditure have meant that the organisation's budget has had to be increased while its sources of income have shrunk or even disappeared. We are in desperate need of vehicles and camping equipment, and an extra £100 could mean the difference between a camp held for eighty children and one held for a hundred or more.

Contributions from sympathetic Queensmen will be gratefully received, and should be sent to the Secretary.

The Francis Master Society was formed in the Lent Term last year to cultivate an appreciation of good food and wine within College. Meetings· are held three or four times each term and have included a Port and Dessert evening, numerous wine tastings, a buffet lunch and two dinners.

The Easter Term lunch and Michaelmas Term dinner have both been particularly successful occasions and very much enjoyed by those attending. Oenologists have found the wine tastings to be extremely useful.

Anegada Expedition The summer months of August and September 1975 saw the culmination of a year's planning for a marine biological expedition to the British Virgin Island of Anegada in the north-eastern Caribbean.

The expedition was led by a Queensman, Richard Dunne, with another Queensman and veteran expeditioner, Chas Baron, among its ranks. The ten-strong team was principally drawn from graduate biologists of Cambridge and the marine science departments at Bangor and Stirling universities. The team spent an intensive six week study period on Anegada, concentrating on the coral and fish fauna aspects of coral reef ecology.

The island itself merits special interest in that it has the second largest barrier reef complex in the Caribbean. Furthermore, mainly due to logistic difficulties, it is an area totally unexplored in the field of reef studies. Records dating back 150 years show the unchanged nature of the island community and further historical evidence indicates no drastic man-made changes ever to have taken place.

Biologically speaking the island has survived as an undisturbed ecosystem, insignificantly affected by man's activities. Difficult navigable waters and inhospitality have precluded all but the most adventurous visitor.

In 1968 the island was the focus of an extremely expensive and ambitious development scheme which would have left it a totally changed environment.

The scheme's failure was a consequence of local opposition to a project essentially devised and agreed in England. It cost the British taxpayer £2½ million with no return. Since then it has still remained in the eye of the developers and has only escaped through fortuitous circumstances.

The expedition will publish its results later this year. The work itself has already sparked off interest by other marine research institutions in the Caribbean. We have achieved what is essentially a base

line study and in doing so have produced a template for .future research.

Thanks are due to the many Queens' Fellows who have both shown interest and helped in this unusual university activity.

The Graduates' Club has changed both in name and in nature in the past year. The AGM in May approved the constitution of the 'Middle Combination Room' and this was confirmed by the Governing Body during the summer. At the same time the magnificent new room in Cripps Court, the Woodville Room, has been opened and is regularly used by nearly all graduates. A television set has been hired and some extra newspapers ordered. It is now rare to find ·the room empty at any time of day.

The existence of the Woodville Room as an attractive base in College has naturally brought an increased appetite among graduates for the activities of the M.C.R. and other College societies. The same end is being achieved by the increase in College rooms made available to graduates; Dr Bowett and Mr Muff have been particularly helpful in this respect. The Club would like to express its appreciation to these and other senior members, notably Dr Bull and the Tutor for Research Students, Mr Parmee, for their support and encouragement during this year, when graduate activity has taken on its new lease of life.

Our weekly dinners are now on Tuesday evenings and these have been well supported, despite a few unforeseen catering difficulties. Professor Hewish spoke to the Club after a dinner in the summer and it is hoped to revive these guest dinners on a more regular basis in 1976.

References to Queens' ever having been Head of the River must surely lie in the depths of history, but the results of once hitting the dizzy heights seemed to dog the Boat Club again last year. The First VIII did not have a happy season.

In the Lent Bumps it fell three places (the Second VIII going up one), but rowed well at Peterborough Head of the River, passing several crews to advance from seventeenth to ninth position. At Easter, with the May Races looming ahead, the First VIII only contained seven oarsmen. At Cambridge Regatta it beat Magdalene in the first round but

such is the truly competitive nature of rowing that Magdalene bumped Queens' in the Mays. The boat was bumped by two other crews before apparently realising its predicament, and on the last day held on to the bottom of the first division in a very determined row. The Third VIII earned great honour by rising into the third division, as did the Fourth (Kangaroos) VIII, who avenged themselves by bumping three times after breaking a blade on the first day.

Last, but by no means least, was the rhythmic masterpiece, the Eighth (St Margaret Society) VIII who, conducted by

the Vice-President, won its oars in splendid fashion. For Henley, a seemingly hopeless state of affairs, with only four oarsmen left from which to pick an eight, was redeemed by forming a composite eight with Caius Boat Club. Such a crew could not be ready to match the stiff competition at Henley and although a first round defeat was not unexpected, a great deal was learned in the blistering July heat. ln the Michaelmas Term 1975 the emphasis has been on training novices. One of the two fours entered in the Fours races was composed of freshmen and several found themselves in the 1st and 2nd Fairbairn VIIIs. The First VIII improved from twentieth to seventeenth, while the Second VIII remained at thirtieth for the third year running. The Third VUI rowed very well to improve its previous time by thirty seconds. Novices were entered in Clare Regatta and Emmanuel Regatta, where both crews reached the semifinals. Mark Gritten competed in the Colquhoun Sculling races and has since gone on to better things. It remains to be seen whether he will row in the Blue Boat or Goldie, and Queens' Boat Club looks forward to his return in April.

Despite the fact that the College was relegated last season, the general prospects for Queens' Rugby were good at the beginning of the year. The main reason for the poor performances in the First Division was an almost total lack of maturity, particularly among the forwards. Nonetheless, "It's an ill wind .. ,", and relegation has given last year's youngsters a chance to mature in a less physicallydemanding environment. At the beginning of the season we thus had ten players with regular First Division experience in attendance, and numerous others who had helped the Second Team to prop up the League last year. The season began well with a convincing win over Sidney in which 'new-boy' Bazell exhibited his undoubted strength and other martial attributes in scoring two tries. Throughout the season the backs have consistently played imaginative rugby, inspired by competent half-back play, power in the centre and speed on the wings. At forward, Queens' performances have been rather more difficult to assess. The line-out work is as bad as it was last season, although there have been noticeable signs of improvement, particularly through the device of shortening and varying the length of the line. The back row is a formidable combination in the mauls but defensively their work still leaves much to be desired. In the tight scrums the front row have produced some solid performances. By College standards it is relatively light, but as a unit it is a workmanlike if unspectacular combination. At the time of going to press the College has .an outside chance of promotion at the first attempt. A win in the last game of the season will give them the chance of a three-way play-off for the remaining promotion place. To date we have played nine, won seven and lost two in scoring 266 and conceding 75 points, excluding a walk-over against King's.

The Lent Term's activities of the Association Football Club centred on Cuppers, in which the team was drawn against Clare. In an extremely close match at Barton Road, Clare were lucky to escape with a 1-1 draw. Unfortunately we could not sustain our fight and lost the replay 2-1, after being two goals down within eight minutes. During the last weekend of the Lent Term twelve players went on a most enjoyable and successful tour to the North East, beating a Leeds University team 4-0, and drawing 1-1 in Redcar the next day. A special mention must be made of Mr Taylor and Mr and Mrs Cross who managed to find room in their homes for all of us. After the departure of many of our best players from last year, the Club was very fortunate in having a skilful batch of freshmen to take their place. Keith Dagnall and Roger Bayliss came into defence, Elwyn Roberts into

midfield, and Mike Anson into the attack. The latter showed his talent by finishing top scorer in his first term.

After a shaky start, the team occasionally played some inspired football, but unfortunately could also produce lethargic performances against some of the poorer opposition. Without doubt the best performances were against our closest rivals, C.C.A.T. II, who were beaten 4-1 in the final match of the Michaelmas Term, thus ensuring promotion of the First XI to Division 2 next season. The First XI need to win their one remaining League match to win the 3rd Division Championship. The defence, with the superb last line of Roger Knight, conceded only six league goals during the term. John Taylor ably Jed the team from the front and guided it through a most successful term. The Second XI, captained by Dave Stork, also had a good influx of freshmen but had a season of mixed fortunes. Unfortunately it ended with four defeats, leaving them in the middle of the Division 4 table. The obvious enthusiasm which now abounds in the Club bodes well for the future and should ensure that next season will be just as successful.

The only notable ach,ievement of the Hockey team in the first term of the year was that it did not manage to score a single goal in League games. There was however no danger of relegation as a number of points had been gathered in the first part of the season. Added to this, the solid defensive work of Richard Cooke, and the confident Australian goalkeeping of "never mind the ball, stop the man" Roger Brown, made it difficult or impossible for the opposition to score. The half-back line, led by a very hard working captain, Andy Molt, often gained control of the midfield, despite which the forwards were unable to beat the opposition goalkeeper. Perhaps a lack of precision in the approach to short corners could be blamed for this, a large number of chances being missed from the set piece.

The team however maintained a good spirit and thanks to efficient organisation on the part of Dave Brandler produced eleven men for each game, which marked a significant improvement on the previous season's record. The start of the I 975/76 season saw the arrival of a wealth of new talent, notably strong half-backs, Nick Birchall and Ian Van Beesten. The influx however left the club with a full team of half-backs, but no goalkeeper. Jim Hillage, noted in the College for his willingness to have a go at anything, provided that it does not require excessive physical exertion, bravely undertook to fill this position, despite never having played hockey before. So under the guidance of new captain Dave Brandler, the team faced Emmanuel in the first League game of the season and demonstrated in a 3-3 draw that goal-scoring was not going to be a continuing problem, with goals coming from a short corner by Birchall and enterprising forward play by Mason and Brandler. A 6-3 victory over a weak Fitzwilliam side renewed the confidence of the team, which had suffered after a frustrating 1-0 defeat by Selwyn, and it was with some optimism that we took the field against a reputedly strong Corpus Christi side. Our being 3-0 down at half-time might have been an excuse to sit back and accept defeat but fine play and powerful determination inspired an impressive recovery and we drew 3-3. The final game of the season was at St John's Sports Ground, where with the help of our Oxford Blue, Ian Boal, we faced a traditionally strong opposition. A well-drilled John's team, with solid defensive work and inventive attacking moves, proved however too strong for Queens', and deserved the 3-0 victory which resulted. Despite this final note the year finished with an encouraging picture for the Queens' Hockey Club. The newly acquired depth of players provided the basis for a strong joint second team

with Corpus Christi led by Martin Stafford (Queens') and has also enabled the first team to cope with problems of injury without significantly weakening the side. A similar influx of talent next year might well take Queens' to near the top of the division.

Apart from the usual frustrations with rain and sun, the Cricket Club had another enjoyable and reasonably successful season in 1975. Ironically enough, in a summer so long and hot, a number of the most attractive fixtures had to be

cancelled due to bad weather, notably the end of term trip to Oxford, which fell victim to a freak snowfall. Eleven games were played, however, and the record of five wins and three defeats was respectable enough. Queens' cricket, for most of the season, was a rather incongruous m~lange of the sublime and the ordinary. In the first round of Cuppers, for example, aggressive outcricket and disciplined batting combined in a convincing nine wicket win over a strong Downing side. In the quarter final of the same competition, by way of contrast, limp bowling and unaccountably deplorable batting led to defeat by Clare. Perhaps the poor net wickets helped to explain the patchiness of form throughout the term. Certainly, and despite all the groundsman's work on them, they never seemed to recover from the drenchings of April and May. Individually, 1975 was not an outstanding year. Of the batsmen, only Nigel Walkey and Ian Corkett managed to score fifties for the First XI, although Richard Cooke, Mark Rosser, Roger Knight and Martin Blencowe all showed occasional good form. The bowling was again spearheaded by Peter Southwick, who could summon up considerable pace when spurred, which was usually achieved by the dropping of catches. Steve Allison and Ian Corkett, both left-armers, added variety to the attack, the former promising much with his orthodox 'slows'; whilst the term's best analysis was returned by Peter Bennett with leg-breaks (7-31). Rob Bradbury, Tim O'Donoghue and Nigel Walkey also contributed to a useful and varied attack. The ground fielding was always competent and occasionally brilliant, owing much to the athleticism of Roger Knight behind the stumps; whilst memorable catches were held by Richard Cooke, Derek Chase and, for quite another reason, Stuart Gravestone. In Rob Bradbury, Queens' had a benign and eminently cheerful skipper, under whom cricket was at all times 'fun'. Roger Knight has been elected Captain for 1976, and with the nucleus of experienced players left to him, much is expected i.n the coming season.

This year, Athletics Cuppers saw the abolition of the division system in favour of a superior arrangement, whereby colleges were divided into three groups to heighten the chances of the six best teams meeting in the final. In the first round Queens' came second in their group, thus reaching the final, in which the team came fourth out of six. This result constitutes a rise of seven places from our position of 11th at the close of the 1974 competition. The team was considerably boosted by the arrival of Charles Monlc, John Austin and Stuart Oglethorpe, all of whom excelled as middle-distance runners. Particular gratitude should be expressed to those who took time off from their main sport to compete. Neil Jacobsen and Paul Tredwell were especially valuable to us, and Ivor Morgan's time over 100m. was the fastest for Queens' since 1968.

Chris Garforth (Steeplechase) and Gavin Reid (lSOOm.) were the only members of the College to represent Cambridge in the Varsity Match in May. Don Macarthur (I SOOm., 5000m.) and William Duggan (800m.) ran for Alverstone, the University second team.

The Cross Country Club continued to show its superiority, winning everything it competed in during the year. A 100% record in the League brought overall victory.

Victories in the St Edmund Hall Road Relay at Oxford, the Selwyn College Relay, and in the colleges' class of the Imperial College Relay showed its class, while success in the Hare & Hounds Relay demonstrated strength in depth.

C. J. Garforth and D. E. Macarthur again went on to represent Cambridge in the British Universities Championships. The Michaelmas Term brought a fine crop of freshmen, ensuring the retention of Queens' dominant position. We have won both the League races so far, and kept up our

remarkable record in Cuppers, winning it for the eighth successive year with ease. As a result the University Team for the Varsity match included three Queensmen: the experienced D. E. Macarthur, and two freshmen, C. Monk ( an Oxford graduate) and J. M. Austin. Another Queens' freshman, J. S. Oglethorpe, came second in the Spartans (University 2nd Team) match against Oxford. Congratulations to these and to everyone who helped continue Queens' run of success.

The Lawn Tennis Club had a season of mixed fortunes in 1975. The First VI took a long time to settle down to play winning tennis and was fortunate to remain in Division I by a single point, while the Second VI were undefeated and came top of Division IV. After encouraging early season practices, the First VI won only one of its first five League matches and a convincing win was needed in the final match against Jesus, which was delayed by bad weather. This match was eventually played on the last Sunday of term in the middle of a heat wave, and victories in four out of the six matches were just sufficient to secure a place for Queens' in Division I next season. In Cuppers we were strengthened

by R. D. Jooste, who was awarded a Pull Blue for playing in the Varsity match, and we defeated Clare in the first round without losing a match. However, in the second round, against Trinity Hall, a 2-4 deficit after the singles was too much of a handicap, and we went down 6-3. Full colours were awarded to A. J. Morris, C. A. Panto and S. T. Davies.

Full colours were reawarded to P. J. Collinson, A. J. M. Tuke and R. Infante.

The Squash courts were given some welcome maintenance during the year, and the Squash Club have shown their appreciation of the improvements by having an excellent season. All the Queens' teams have performed well and have each been promoted at least one Division.

The First Team got into the First Division, by comfortably winning the Second, and have a good chance of winning the League title this year. The Second Team were promoted to the Second Division where they are managing to hold their position, despite having to play college First teams. In Cuppers, Queens' beat the second seeds, and went on to reach the semi-finals before an injury-stricken side lost to Downing. With the sport becoming very popular in College, it has been possible to form a College Fifth Team, which has yet to lose a match. R. D. Jooste is playing for the Ganders, and should be in the side to play Oxford in February.

The 1974-75 season was another reasonably successful one for the Badminton Club. The First Team managed to keep its fifth position in the First Division of the League, having almost the same team as last season. The Second Team, in the Third Division, improved upon last year's performance by getting fifteen out of a possible twentyseven points, and finishing in the top half of the division.

We were not quite as successful in the Cuppers competition this year, only getting to the semi-finals, beating Peterhouse and Emmanuel, but losing to the winners of the competition, Christ's. Considering the lack of any good freshmen - there were none in the first team - our overall performance was very satisfactory. The situation in the first term of the 1975-6 season is completely reversed, with only one nonfreshman in the First Team (the Club Captain) and enough players for us to form a Third Team which has been placed in the newly-formed Fourth Division. Unfortunately our hopes have taken a knock by being soundly beaten in Cuppers by Emmanuel, one of about three teams we did not want to be drawn against, who have two Blues players and a Cockerels Club player. We should however make up for this with a good League performance. Colours for the

1974-5 season were awarded to A. J. Morris, S. E. Eldridge, S. R. Sharma, J. P. Patterson, T. Instone, and D. E. Hutchinson. The Captain. R. H. Bradbury, also deserves a mention for his continued support of the Club, and for being elected as Captain of the University Cockerels Club for the 1974-5 season.

Last season was disappointing for the Table Tennis Club since the First Team was relegated. Both teams are now in the same division, and the First Team holds the ignominious position of being the lowest-placed First Team in the University. This term, however, has been more encouraging, with both teams doing well and the First Team, having convincingly beaten all their opponents so far, seem certain to be promoted. This change in performance is due partly to new players in the first year and partly to greater consistency from the rest of the teams, so the prospects for the Club in the future are better than in previous years.

The Water Polo team had a very successful year in 1975.

Most games in the First Division of the Colleges League were won comfortably, and Queens' eventually finished top of the League without dropping a point. Passage to the final of Cuppers was similarly swift, with good victories over Emmanuel, Christ's and Downing, but a strong, experienced St Catharine's side awaited us in the final. An unfortunate late injury to a key player left the Queens' defence in a disorganised state, and St Catharine's exploited this to the full, eventually winning 4-2, despite a worthy Queens' performance, especially by our less experienced players.

The strength of the team undoubtedly lay in A. R. Green, S. W. Kidd and D. J . Wrigley, who won Half Blues representing the University against Oxford and played in the British Universities Championships. However, all other players, especially the Captain, R. D. Spencer, and R. D. Giibey, made invaluable contributions to the successes. In addition to the above, regular team members J. A. Jackson, S. R. Nelson and M. I. Johnson were awarded College colours.

Swimming Cuppers again came at a very inconvenient time of term, just before Tripos, and Queens', like virtually all other colleges, was unfortunately unable to enter a team.

However,D. J. Wrigley and S. W. Kidd swam against Oxford in the Varsity match, the former being awarded a Full Blue and the latter a Half Blue. Michaelmas Term 1975 has seen reasonable turnouts at sessions, and further successes are hoped for in 1976.

The Chess Club had a satisfactory season in 1974-75, maintaining its position in the middle of the Second Division. John Scholes and David Sedgwick produced some particularly good performances. In the first round of Cuppers Queens' were unfortunate to meet a strong St Catharine's side and were heavily defeated ½-4½. The new season has seen an upturn in the Club's fortunes, with an influx of talented freshmen, notably Berwick Mitchell, Ian Morrison and John Ridley. In Division II Queens' have won three-quarters of their matches, and have a reasonable chance of promotion next year. For the fust time for some years we also have a very active second team, under the able leadership of Michael Burrows. This team has won all its matches in Division IV by convincing margins, and only an absolute disaster will prevent it from winning promotion. In short, the outlook for Chess at Queens' in the coming years is a bright one.

The Golf Club as usual won all its matches, and the College has reached the final of the University foursomes tournament, the Welsh Cup. At a University level. P. D. Southwick captained the Blues side and five players have represented the Stymies, including C. A. Kenyon, who captains the team in the 1975-76 season.

Ecclesiastical The Rev. Canon E. A. R. Santer (1927) has resigned from his living at Malmesbury to go into semi-retirement as Chaplain of St Cross, Winchester, and is to be an Honorary Canon Emeritus of Bristol Cathedral.

The Rev. I. J. McC. Reid (I 935) has retired as leader of the Iona Community.

The Rev. J. C. Royds (l 939) has retired from the Headmastership of Uppingham School and is now Assistant Curate at St Andrew's, Kettering.

A. R. D. Wright (1941) has relinquished the Headmastership of Shrewsbury School to become Secretary for Appointments to the Archbishops of Canterbury and York.

The Rev. M. J. Gudgeon (1960) has been instituted as Vicar of Hawley with Mintey, in the diocese of Guildford.

The Rev. J. E. G. Oswald ( J 960) is now Priest in Charge of Hardenhuish and Kingston St Michael, Wiltshire.

The Rev. R. F. Oldfield (I 964) has been ordained to serve as Curate of St Peter's, Halliwell, Bolton.

The Rev. C. M. Tuckett (1966) has been ordained to serve as Curate of Lancaster Priory.

The Rev. R. C. Godsall (I 967) has been ordained as Curate of St Mary and St Margaret with St Cuthbert, Norwich.

Educational M. R. Bouquet (1934) has recently retired as Head of the English Department at the County Secondary School, Bamptc>n, Devon, where he has taught since I 946. His book on printed and manuscript Ephemera of Soil is due to appear in 1976.

Prof. Sir Harold Bailey ( 1936), Life Fellow of the College, was President of the International Congress of Mithraic Studies held in Teheran last September.

T. M. Sugden (1938), formerly Fellow of the College, has been elected Master of Trinity Hall.

W. A. Barker (1942) has been appointed Headmaster of University College School, London.

H. P. Babbedge (1944) has been appointed Head of Music at the School of St David and St Katherine, Haringey.

J. L. Glazier (1946) was elected to a Schoolmaster Fellowship at St John's College, Cambridge, for the Michaelmas Term 1975.

Prof. F. B. Bull (1947) has been appointed Deputy Chairman of the Universities Commission in Australia.

R. R. Raymo (I 949) is now Dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Science at New York University.

Prof. R. N. Haszeldine (1954), fonnerly Fellow of the College, has been appointed Principal of the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology, where he is presently Head of the Department of Chemistry. ¡ Prof. P. Queens' Men in the South West

The Years 1969-1972

The third Annual Dinner for Queens' Men in the South West was held in the Castle Hotel, Taunton, on Friday the 9th of May 1975. Professor P. G. Stein, the Vice-President of the College, was the Guest of Honour. The Rt Rev. C. R. Claxton presided and twelve members of the College were present. Queens' Men in the North West The twenty-fifth Annual Dinner for Queens' men in the North-West took place at The Old Vicarage Hotel, Stretton, near Warrington, on Friday, 21st March 197 5. The Rev. B. F. F. Crane presided and seventeen members attended. The guest of honour was Dr. J. M. Prentis and the toast to the College was proposed by Professor Sir Arthur Armitage.

The Annual Meeting was held on Saturday, 14th June. The Treasurer reported that 104 new members had joined the Club and that at the end of the year there was a debit balance of ÂŁ219. About 100 members were present at the Dinner.
