The New Development and the College Appeal During this academic year the College has gradually occupied parts of Phase One of the new Cripps Court. Originally, completion of this Phase had been planned for Easter 1 974, but as we moved into the Summer months it became apparent that the d elays were such that we should not be able to occupy all th e residential parts of the building.

Thus it was that in October the undergraduates moved into many of the rooms but faced the irrita­ tions of uncompleted bathrooms, no bookshelves, workmen on the roof, on the staircases and in the Cloisters. Many undergraduates had to share rooms until their own rooms were ready and some Fellows had no rooms at all.

As I write in the middle of the Lent Term, much still remains to be done. The new J .C.R. , the new M . C. R. , the Sick Bay, the new S.C.R. and two residential flats for Fellows are not yet handed over, and there remains a good deal of minor work known in the trade as "snagging". It has been a somewhat traumatic experience for everyone. On the whole, however, members of the College have demonstrated considerable patience, and none more so than the Fellows on the Building Com­ mittee who meet weekly with the building con­ tractors (Messrs Laings) and the architects.

Phase Two is now well under way. It comprises the remaining one and a half sides of the Court, lying to the south and west. The south side is basic­ ally the new Dining Hall and Kitchens and the structure of the roof is now taking shape, soon to be clad in lead sheeting but topped by a prominent "lantern". From ground level one has a clear impression of the lofty and splendid proportions upon which we had insisted . The remaining half of the west side is basically residential accommoda­ tion, and this has now reached second-floor level.

We aim to complete the basic structure of the whole of Phase Two by the middle of the summer, leaving the internal fittings still to be done.

When I wrote in the Record last year I gave some warning that, due to the severity of the cur­ rent inflation, no decision could be taken on when Phase Three ( the completion of the project in­ volving the new car-park multi-p urpose Hall and new sq uash courts) could begin . I now have to report that increasing costs have made it necessary

to revise even the plans to complete Phase Two. There is no question of an abandonment of our plans. What we shall have to do is to complete the work on Phase Two in some other and more economical way. It may take somewhat longer, and it is a disappointment to have to set aside a com­ pletion date, but the cost of continuing on our previous plan is quite impossible.

I should offset this pessimistic note by saying that the College has no intention of red ucing the qu ality of the building or of its furnishings and fittings. Some members attending the Club week­ end last year will have seen evid ence of this quality and th ere is no doubt that it is a fine building .

Moreover, whilst progress by the contractors has been slow, we are gradually putting the College back in good order. The Grove has now had all the heaped piles of topsoil removed and has been re-sown with grass and replanted with some 9,000 bulbs. The new garden area is virtually complete and by next month we shall start on the garden between the new court and the old north wall of the Fellows' G arden . A new Porters' Lodge has been created at the end of the Fisher Building, controlling the Round which is certain to become the princip al access into the College. We shall con­ tinue to man the old Lodge in Old Court.

It is righ t that this report on the development plan s should be accompanied by a note about the progress of the College Appeal, for without the Appeal much of what we have achieved would have been impossible. By early March the total reached is £2 3 2 ,242 , contributed by some 1 45 8 Queensmen and 1 9 charitab le fou ndations. This a tremend ous achievem en t by any standards and, given the present economic uncertain ties, it is quite remark­ ab le . It is due entirely to the selfless generosity and effort of Queensrnen aU over the world and it indicates a sense of community which I would commend to the notice of present u ndergraduates.

We shall not close the Appeal, if only because I still receive letters from Queensmen wishing to help . I am therefore convinced that we shall in due course reach the target I predicted last year, namely £25 0,000.

The Society I must this year accord pride of place to Arthur Armitage . who received a Knighthood in th e New Yea r's H ono urs List. His appointment as Chainn an of the Comm ittee of Vice-Chancellors and Prin­ cipals last year made this honour well-nigh

inevitable , but this was no more th an the culmina­ tion of a long period of public service in various capacities (much of it performed whilst President of Queens') and it gives the College great satis­ faction to see this service publicly recognised.

The same list also contained a C.B.E. for Professor Brian in recognition of his service as a Member of the Agricultural Research Council and this, too, gives us great pleasure. We also take pride in Professor Stein's election as a Fellow of the British Academy .

The Fellowship has had a strange air about it this year: essentially, I suppose, a loss of "gravitas". The reason is very largely the absence of Professor Arthur Ramsay, Mr Hart and Dr Diggle, all away on sabbatical leave, and the retirement of Dr Maxwell. They were all much missed, both in the Combination Room and at our Governing Body meetings. I should however add that Dr Maxwell continues supeivising in his room in College, happily assuming a burden of teaching which puts most of us to shame.

Dr Morgan has resigned his Fellowship and Dr Baldwin completed the maximum tenure possible under our Statutes as a Bye-fellow. The saddest ahd cruellest loss of all has been the death of Dr Sofer, of whom I have written a separate obituary notice in this year's Record.

Additions to the Fellowship have been made. It gives me great pleasure to report the election of three new Honorary Fellows: Sir George Waller, a Judge of the High Court of Justice in the Queen's Bench; Sir Philip Allen, recently retired from being Permanent Under-Secretary of State at the Home Office; and Mr Charles Tomlinson, one of the most distinguished contemporary poets. The Society is enriched by their association with it and we look forward to the closest possible links with all three in future years.

Mr Napier, of whose election to a Research Fellowship I wrote last year, has been made an Official Fellow in Law and, in addition, has now secured a Faculty appointment so that he relinquishes the joint Queens'/Trinity Teaching Fellowship. Dr Baker, a Research Fellow of the College and currently on sabbatical leave in India, has been appointed to the joint Queens'/Trinity Teaching Fellowship in History, which means a promotion to an Offi.cal Fellowship from next October. A further Law Fellow has been appointed with effect from the next academic year, namely Mr Kevin Gray, a Research Student of Trinity Hall with a distinguished academic record. He will succeed Mr Napier as the holder of the joint Queens'/Trinity Teaching Fellowship in Law. It will be seen from this that the trend towards joint College appointments, of which 1 wrote last year, continues and the College is indebted to Trinity for helping to finance these essential College teaching posts.

The College had hoped to finance more teaching Fellowships from the Appeal and, whilst almost all our approaches to charitable foundations failed, we were delighted to receive a gift of ÂŁ10,000 from the Godfrey Mitchell Trust to help with our teaching in Engineering. Our intention is to appoint a Research Fellow or Student in Civil Engineering.

There have been fewer changes in College office than in recent years. Professor Stein has replaced Professor Ramsay as Vice-President and in that capacity, like his predecessor, gives me personally very great assistance. Dr Cohen has succeeded Dr Baldwin as Garden Steward and Dr Riley-Smith has acted as Librarian during Dr Diggle's absence. Mr Wright has succeeded Dr Maxwell as Keeper of the Records and has maintained the quality of the Record over the last two years by his energy and enterprise.

Many members of the College will wish to be reassured about Mr A. D. Browne. Now in his eighty-sixth year, and despite his immobility, he keeps tolerably well and retains sufficient mental alertness to be a doughty chess-player and, as al:Vays, a source of sound advice on all matters affecting the College. There should be no mistake about the fact that he remains very much a Fellow of the College.

The Fabric The seemingly endless work of routine maintenance to pipes, gutters and window frames has continued, with the Dokett building receiving priority.

The Erasmus building has had to be largely refurnished with carpets and new upholstery, and a good deal of work has been necessary to make the showers usable, which one would not normally expect in a relatively new building.

In Fisher the work of re-wiring and installing central heating has continued, so that now both T and Y staircases are heated and all are re-wired except for V staircase; we will hope to centrally-heat at least two more staircases in the next Long Vacation. The re-wiring of Essex has also continued, but has taken far longer than expected and, not unnaturally, has led to some dissatisfaction amongst the Fellows who live and work there.

A splendid Chestnut in the Round has had to be felled. It was, alas, diseased and becoming dangerous so that there was no alternative. Its replacement stands as a very demure little tree, but no doubt time will give it majesty. We have also replanted willows on the river bank in the Fellows' bowling green.

Future plans include the cleaning and re-lighting of the Chapel, a start on the re-surfacing of the pathways in Friars and Walnut Tree, some longawaited repairs to the river wall and the stone buttresses to the wooden bridge, the re-wiring of the Friars building, and much routine work besides.

He loved life, and he loved people. He had a profound sympathy for people and was happiest when he was able to share with them some of his own joy of life. Friendliness and hospitalit y flowed from him. And so did good humour. His colleagues will well recall those many occasions - perhaps as they met crossing one of the Courts of the College - when, with a smile and a quiet flash of humour, he would send them on their way feeling a little happier and all the better for having met him.

Of course, people interested him professionally.

It was clear that, in Governing Body meetings, he often looked upon his colleagues as a case-study in group behaviour. Yet cynicism had no place in his make-up . He was a man of shrewd, but kindly judgemen t and on many many occasions he served the College well and left his impact upon our collective acts.

He demonstr ated a rare ability to stand aloof from a problem and to apply a perceptio n and power of analysis which quickly exposed the irrational argument or the overemotional reaction; indeed, there will be many an undergrad uate and senior member who will have learnt from his example. The loss to the College and to the University is enormous.

Dr Cyril Sofer

Fellow 1965-197 4

Dr Cyril Sofer died after a brief illness on March 20, 1974.

Born in 1921 in South Africa, he was educated first at the University of Cape Town and afterwards at London, taking his PhD in 1952. During a varied career he lectured at Witwatersrand, Makerere College, Bedford College, London, the Tavistock Institute and, until his death, at Cambridge. He came to Cambridge in 1965 and was elected a Fellow of Queens' College and appointed. Reader in Industrial Management in the University.

His contribut ions to sociology were distinguished and reflected his dedicatio n to his chosen field of study. His publicatio ns included A Social Survey of a Multi-Racial Township (1955), New Ways in Management ( 1958), The Organisation from Within ( 1961 ), Men in Mid-Career ( 1970), and Organisations in Theory and Practice ( 1972).

Within the Fellowship at Queens' College, Cyril Sofer attracted both affection and respect. He had a youthful zest for life and a ready humour, although never at the expense of others. To the problems which he tackled, and these included dealing with undergrad uates as Vice-President of the College Union, he brought a calmness of judgment which proved invaluable to his colleagues.

Bequest Dr W.S. Rogern (1922) bequeath ed five thousand pounds for the improvem ent of the Courts and Gardens of the College.

Reginalia: the Five Hundredth Anniversary of the First Statute s An address delivered in Hall by the Director of Studies in History on 10th March 1975 to mark the 500th anniversary of the granting of the first Statutes.

Exactly five hundred years ago Queen Elizabeth Woodville granted the College its first statutes. It seems that Andrew Docket and his fellows had

managed to live without them for nearly thirty years. This is worth noticing. Men in the Middle Ages were intensely legalistic, and corporate bodies never felt happy until the lives of their members were regulated. Today we tend to distinguish laws and rules and legalism from morality, but then and for many centuries to come - law was seen as a means of expressing the most vital principles, whether regulating the State or the Church or even a small college, and adherence to it was a moral duty. No institution could be expected to survive for long without some fonnal rules of life and the urgency with which a matter of this sort was regarded can be seen in the fact that from the first charter of 1446, founding the College of St. Bernard on land fronting onto Trumpington Street which now belongs to St. Catharine's, there was established a clerical commission, later to be headed by the Bishop of Lichfield, to frame suitable statutes. There is no evidence that the commission succeeded in its task, and it can only be supposed that the Wars of the Roses inte1Vened and delayed the business. And the suivival of the College without statutes for nearly thirty years ought to tell us something of the characters of Andrew Docket and his four fellows: either they were all remarkably flexible and tolerant, or the first President exercised an overpowering domination over them. We cannot say which was the case, though I must say I am inclined to believe the second.

The history of the foundation of Queens' is well known. Here I need only say that when in 1447 King Henry VI was in the course of refounding Queens' on a new site - the present one - he was approached by his young wife, Margaret of Anjou, who begged him to allow her to found the College herself, where the business of teaching would lead to the "laud and honneure of sex feminine" : - a famous phrase which, it is surprising to note, has not yet been used in the co-residence debate. The King agreed and letters patent under the Great Seal, authorising the establishment of a President and four fellows, were issued on 30 March 1448.

Margaret of Anjou was an extraordinarily tough arid dominating woman - certainly the stronger partner in her marriage - who played an active and rather unfortunate part in the complicated politics that led to the Wars of the Roses and had her own army during them. Although Henry and Margaret were briefly restored in 1470 - this must have worried Andrew Docket - the Wars were ended in 1461 with the Yorkist victory and the accession of Edward IV, who married Elizabeth Woodville in 1464. Elizabeth had, in fact, been one of Margaret's ladies-in-waiting and was the widow of a leading Lancastrian killed at the Battle of Barnet.

She seems to have been even more of a tartar than her fonner mistress. According to the most recent biographer of Edward IV: Her rather cold beauty was not offset by any warmth or generosity of temperament. She was

to prove a woman of designing character, grasping and ambitious for her family's interests, quick to take offence and reluctant to forgive.

But she certainly treated us well and it must surely be greatly to the credit of Andrew Docket that he was able to get on with, and indeed take advantage of, these fearsome women. He must very soon have approached Elizabeth - and it is almost certain that the approach did come from him because by March 1465 she was already referred to by her husband as patroness of the College.

I do not have time to go into the full details of the saga of the disappearing and reappearing statutes of 1475. Let me just say that in 1852 they V'(ere known to exist in a copy of the middle of the sixteenth century in a little book kept by the President, but they had disappeared by the time Searle was writing on Queens' in the 1860s, for he did not quote from them - and he quoted liberally from almost everything else. Gray, whose History of the College was published in 1899 seems to have seen them, although I wonder if he saw the same copy as I have. Anyway, I am glad to say that I have seen and read the scruffy, inaccurate midsixteenth century copy in the notebook. Many of the details would bore you, but I will refer to a few points. They allowed for a President, twelve fellows and three scholars. Besides the President there were five college officers, elected each year between the feasts of Michaelmas and All Saints: two treasurers, a cantor and two deans. All the fellows had to be priests and they took an elaborate succes.5ion of twelve oaths on entering their fellowships. One oath covered what should be done if a fellow discovered that one of his colleagues was a drunkard; another bound him never to defend the heresies of John Wyclif and Reginald Pecock, the Bishop of Chichester condemned in the 1450s for his rationalist thought. The President received a stipend of five marks (ÂŁ3 6s. 8d.) a year, together with 2s. a week for his commons. This was divided into ls. 4d. for himself and 8d. for his se1Vant.

Each fellow received ten marks a year. No fellow was to spend the night away in the town without the President's pennission and fellows could be expelled for, amongst other things, simony, manifest perjury, notable theft, voluntary homicide and adultery.

When you come to think of it, the course steered by Andrew Docket, his ¡ running of the College without statutes for many years and his relationship with two very difficult and domineering Queens of England, reveals him as a most remarkable man. By c. 1500 his creation, Queens', even without the estates granted to her by Richard III and then confiscated by Henry VII, was one of the better endowed colleges in Cambridge, had the most extensive buildings and was a centre of the English Renaissance. Andrew Docket had died in 1484, but it was he who had contributed most to the College's rapid development.

The Library

Work has begun on the preseivation and repair of the bindings of the books in the Old Library.

Damaged bindings are being sent for repair to Oxford, while the lengthy task of treating all the bindings with preservative fluid has been begun in the Library itself by Professor F. Goldby, formerly a Fellow, and Mrs Goldby. We are greatly in their debt for undertaki ng this importan t work.

The preacher at the Commem oration of Benefactors in Full Term was the Rt. Rev. E.J.K. Roberts, Lord Bishop of Ely, and at the visit of the Club in June, the Very Rev. H.M. Connop Price, Provost of Chelmsford.

The service of Music and Readings for Passiontide took place on IO March and the Advent Carol Service on 1 December.

The Church in College has greatly benefited in the last two academic years from the part-time . assistance, in the chaplaincy work, of Miss R.D. Watling, formerly of the Cambridge Pastorate.

In the summer, the Voluntary Choir went on a highly successful tour of Scotland, singing Choral Evensong at the Cathedra l of the Isles on the Isle of Cumbrae, and giving recitals at Dunfermline, Stirling, Perth and Edinburgh. They also appeared on Scottish television.

The College Union is unique among Cambridge Colleges in that it is a Union of Fellows, graduates and undergraduates and, as such, seeks to represent a number of varied views that are rarely in agreement. Although this might make for interesting debate, it makes cogent policy decisions difficult to implement. Fortunate ly, though, there has been a united effort this year to deal with one of the main problems faced by the Union: inflation.

One of the main functions of the College Union is to oversee the various sporting and social societies that exist within the College and to distribute the funds given to us by the Local Education Authorities equitably between them. As their interests become more diverse and their running costs increase, the societies' demands on these allocated funds are obviously greater and it is not always possible to meet them. One society, however, that has been begun successfully in the last year is the Queens' Visiting Group. This was formed to help relieve many of the problems currently being suffered by old people - particularly those who live on their own. In addition to regular personal visits, various undergraduates have also organised at least one tea party per term where both food and entertain ment are provided; a day out to the country in a coach is also planned for next Easter term. Understandably, the Council of the Union felt that it was worth subsidising some of the expenditure incurred in pursuit of such a laudable venture.

The Council has also continued to support the Cambridge Students Union which, in the past year, has placed more emphasis on expanding its social services than on political agitation. This has been achieved by such measures as the purchase of a Mini-Bus, which University and College societies can hire at far lower rates than those charged by any commercial enterprise, and by the establish-

ment of a central Housing Bureau to deal with the limited supply of, and increasing demand for, suitable student accommodation outside Colleges.

The other main problems faced by our own Union have been the many unforeseen consequences arising from having every undergraduate in residence. Cripps Court accommodates over one third of the College; this has obviously increased the demand for nearly all the College services. For example, the turnover of the Bar and Hall has b~en augmented considerably due to their comparative convenience - distance is always an important factor in any student's consumption pattern. Thus the workload of all the College staff and officers has been increased considerably - particularly for those involved with the kitche11s, where the antiquated machinery cannot help the situation: this can only be remedied when the new kitchens are brought into use. The Union is very grateful for the innumerable efforts made by the College Fellows, staff and officers - particularly over the Long Vacation - to ensure that the move into Cripps Court has been as smooth as possible.

Despite the fact that the great majority of the College is now in residence, it is very difficult to get most members involved in a Union that is essentially run by an elected executive; their disinterest is usually due either to stronger commitments to some University or College Society, or to general apathy. While the former reason may be praiseworthy, (and is indeed encouraged by the Union through rebates on various University Sporting Clubs subscriptions), it is difficult to remove the latter. Certainly, a newsletter might go some way towards combatting apathy by increasing communication between the Council and the rest of the Union, and, hopefully, by generating opinion on Union affairs; but until students become interested in College matters outside the limited spectrum of their accomodation and stomachs, it will be difficult for the Union to "further the corporate life of the College". It is hoped that the expanded JCR facilities in Cripps Court will be an important means towards this end.

In the Lent Term 1974, the St. Margaret Society was involved in a wide range of activities. Two Sunday evening Chapel concerts were given by members of the College, exhibiting a diversity of talent and standard. A novel feature of one of the concerts was twenty minutes of jazz. Organ recitals were given by Iain Ledingham (Organ Scholar of the College), James Lancelot (King's), Neil Cox (Downing), Janet du Clayes (Girton), Paul Webster (St. Catharine's), John Maby (Queens') and Peter King (Queens'). In early February a concert was given in the Long Gallery at the kind invitation of the President and Mrs Bowett. There was a mixture of vocal and instrumental playing, including the first performance by the string quartet, consisting of Stephen Jones, Hugh Savill, Tim Wilcox and Andrew Sabourin. The Society followed this with a concert on February 22nd in the Village College at Swavesey, when the programme included the Mozart clarinet and viola trio, the Beethoven trio for two oboes and cor anglais on a theme by Mozart, and several short motets performed by the St. Margaret Society Singers. Four days later, a concert was given in St. Botolph's Church in aid of the restoration fund. The major work was Bach's Brandenburg Concerto Number 4. The main concert of the term was the performance of Britten's St Nicholas with Joy Roberts and John Elwes as soloists. Iain Ledingham conducted the concert in Great St. Mary's Church, which included the Benedicite by Vaughan-Williams.

Organ recitals were continued in the Easter Term, given by Iain Ledingham, David Bevan (Westminster Cathedral), Peter King (Queens'), Andrew Millington (Downing) and Robin Bowman, who performed Schoenberg's Variation on a Recitative. A Chapel concert was given on May 12th, and at the end of April the Carissimi Singers of London gave a concert of late Renaissance and Early Baroque music, conducted by their director Paul Morgan. The May Week concert was of a more serious tone than in recent years but nevertheless proved an entertaining climax to the year's music.

Peter King performed Chopin's B flat minor Scherzo, Jacek Strauch sang Mozart and the concert ended with Captain Noah by Flanders and Horovitz.

Sufficient St. Margaret Society members were

up during the Long Vacation period of residence to give a concert in Chapel to a large audience of visitors during the Cambridge Festival.

The Michaelmas Term began with a Chapel concert, followed the next Sunday by the Freshmen's concert. The St. Margaret Society visited Swavesey again, on October 26th, this time performing in St. Andrew's Church. Professor Beament's birthday was celebrated in the Senior Combination Room on November 17th. The programme was very varied, including the Poulenc Oboe Sonata played

by Andrew Morris, Roumanian Folk Dances for violin by Bartok, played by Jan Kaznowski, and ending with medieval songs and music and the customary rendering of an arrangement of 'Happy Birthday' composed by the Organ Scholar on the previous day. The second Chapel Concert included Byrd, Dohnanyi and Schubert's Shepherd on the Rock performed by Dr. Green, Elizabeth Gardner and Richard Tuckett. The main concert of the term was the performance of the Mozart Requiem in Great St. Mazy's, together with the Exsultate Jubila te and the Bach oboe and violin concerto.

Andrew Morris played the oboe, Jan Kaznowski the violin, and the soloists in the Mozart were Anna Deathridge, Doreen Walker, John Nixon and Jonathan Robarts.

The May Week production was John Ford's 'Tis pity she's a Whore, directed by Robert Footman and Simon Arrowsmith. Costumes from Stratford and an unusual sloping, triangular stage in the corner of Cloister Court created an interesting setting for the play. Steve Walker and Marianne Downes took the main parts of the incestuous lovers , and a sheep's heart covered in stage blood starred in the role of Annabella's heart.

The activities of the Bats over this last year have been varied. We began with an evening of three productions in Hall with Martin Pantcr's production of The Anniversary by Tchekhov opening the programme. This short comedy was followed by a monologue, Smoking is Bad for You, also by Tchekhov. Lastly the Hall resounded to some terrifyingly loud sound effects which accompanied Robert Footman's production of The Tragedie of Tom Thumb the Great. There was a pantomime atmosphere about this show, which included

The main production of the Michaelmas Term was T.S. Eliot's The Family Reunion, directed by Martin Panter in Christ's New Theatre. With costumes by Maggie Yorke, lighting by Tim Schofield and sound by Tim Nicholson, the play was of good College standard.

The term was rounded off with our traditional pantomime, written by Mark Larnbirth and directed by Alan Walker which toured local schools.

History Society

Film Society 1973-74

In its brief but eventful history, QFS has gained an occasionally unwelcome reputation for highlighting the work of Hollywood directors - both the famous (Hawks, Hitchcock, Ford), and the more esoteric (Raoul Walsh, Sam Fuller, and a host of others whose importance has been generally under­ rated or ignored). Last year's Chairman, Simon Arrowsmith, ensured an outlet for films which, even if certain financial failures, deseived a showing amongst the mindless pap served up by most other College film societies in Cambridge: Howard Hawks' sadly neglected Red Line 7000 played to a sparse audience of devoted "cinephiles" and the event merited a laudatory article in Gran ta; Raoul Walsh's Revolt of Mamie Stover received a rare Cambridge showing at Queens', and in the summer was "rediscovered" at the Edinburgh Film Festival, becoming the subject of a polemical critical debate on the role of women in Hollywood cinema. Though continually tottering on the brink of financial ruin, the College Film Society was a centre for anyone with more than a passing interest in cinema as both an artistic and political form.

The continuation of this policy brought certain financial difficulties, only arrested by the pain­ staking efforts of the Committee to provide more popular films for much larger audiences. A notice­ able difference between the two terms' pro­ grammes was the result. Before Christmas the emphasis was as before: Douglas Sirk's Tarnished Angels, Sam Fuller's Steel Helmet, Rouben Mamoulian's Silk Stockings and Howard Hawks' Red River were shown on the proceeds from more commercial films by Don Siegel, Nick Roeg and Sergio Leone. In the Lent Term the Hall was more consistently packed for films such as Peckinpah's Straw Dogs, The Forbidden Planet, The Satan Bug and Borsalino, with only Nick Ray's The Lusty Men leaving the Hall void of all but a handful of

addicts.

Having embarked on a more commercial policy. the Society has now gained a new lease of life.

Hopefully we will soon be free from financial and technical worries and will be able to provide a more comfortable location for our w eekly showings. Situated in a different sphere of opera­ tions, the Society's future now looks more com­ mercially healthy.

The History Society, recently rejuvenated, has continued to flourish this year. Meetings have covered a wealth of activities, some of them pertaining to history. In the Easter Term, we had a paper by Professor Hugh Thomas, of Reading Uni­ versity, on the general topic of "The Spanish Civil War in the Light of Recent Research". Professor Thomas is himself an acknowledged authority on the subject, and the meeting was of great interest.

The next paper to be delivered was in the Michaelmas Term. It was given by Professor Moses Finley, and was entitled, "The Profits and Miseries of Empire: the Ancient Greek Experience". Pro­ fessor Finley's warm and enthusiastic approach ensured that the paper appealed not only to those members who were Ancient Historians. The last meeting of the year witnessed a departure from tradition. Professor Geoffrey Elton was invited to lead an open discussion on "Some Historical Prob­ lems". Fears that the subject might be too high­ brow were immediately dismissed - the Professor directed discussion in a friendly and flowing manner, and all enjoyed hearing him assert his own very individual views.

In addition to these meetings, a number of less intellectual activities have taken place. A St. Valentine's Day Fancy Dress Ball, to be held in conjunction with Girton College History Society, was projected, but unfortunately never came off.

The revived Cricket Match was a triumph for the Society. We challenged the rest of the College (whose team consisted almost entirely of 1st and 2nd XI members), and duly thrashed them by one wicket. It must be admitted that the fact that we batted second was to our advantage - the fire of the opposition's bowling was considerably dampened by the constant replenishment of their tankards.

But due credit must go to our Team Captain, whose long innings held our batting together: he was extraordinarily expert in allowing his partners to see as much of the bowling as possible.

The All Saints' Day Dinner strongly testified to the interest in the Society that has been aroused over the last two years: it was attended by ninety­ seven people. The Guest of Honour was that noted biographer of Tudor and Stuart times, Lady Antonia Fraser, and there were other distinguished guests, from both within and without the historical world.

We continue to broaden our scope. Next term, custom at the College Bar should be increased; as we put in practice for a Darts Match against the

Rest. There will be an outing to Sawston Hall, and hopefully , in the summer vacation, a trip to Hadrian's Wall and other northern sites.

Finally, thanks must be given to the Dean of Chapel for his hospitalit y in allowing us to hold meetings in his rooms.

The Medical Society has continued to flourish this year. In the Lent Tenn 1974, there were four meetings: "The Army Mountain eering Association Expeditio n to the Himalaya s", "Air Pollution and Health", "Art and Science in Veterinar y Medicine ", and "The Problems of Life and Death".

This last occasion was a very successful combined meeting with the Queens' Bench Society, and discussed the legal aspect of such topics as euthanasi a and abortion.

Michaelmas Term 197 4 saw three meetings, namely "Medical Care of Rare and Exotic Species", "Some Environm ental Health Hazards" Industrial from Problems "Medical and Chemicals". As always, the highlight of the term was the annual dinner, at which Dr. Rose of the Pathology Departme nt was the guest speaker. For the first time (as far as records have been kept or Dr. Bull can remembe r,) ladies were invited, an innovatio n of which the vast majority of the Society approved. The Society would like to thank the Vice-Presidents, in particular Dr. Bull, for their support and help througho ut the year.

One of the problems that the College Law Society has in common with other College-based, Facultyorientated Societies is that our potential audience is somewha t limited and this in turn limits the attractive ness of our programmes. The problem is self-perpetuating. That is why it is particular ly sad to have to report that despite producing interestin g programm es our attendanc es have not substantia lly improved over the last couple of years.

During the last half of the 1973/74 academic year the Society was addressed by John Spencer, who spoke about "The Law in a Consume r Society", and Professor Glanville Williams on "Problem s of Life and Death"; a debate was held on "Strict Liability" and the President judged a Moot on Iriternatio nal Law. Our Annual Dinner was held in the Lent Term and our guest was Philip Allott, former legal adviser to the Foreign Office.

So far this year the Society has been addressed by Geoffrey Datson, the Chief Executive of Cambridge City; John Shand, a Barrister and sometime Fellow; Claud Bicknell, a member of the Law Commission; Sir George Waller, a High Court Judge and an Honorary Fellow; and the Governor of Chelmsfo rd Prison, Michael Selby.

We have already arranged an interestin g series of meetings for next term, including two exciting innovatio ns in proposed visits to the Royal Courts of Justice and a Prison. We hope that our efforts and the continued support of the President , Mr. Tiley, Professors Stein and Coote, and Mr. Napier, will be reflected in larger audiences drawn from the College as a whole.

Christian Union 1974 has been partieular ly marked for the Christian Union in being the year of the triennial InterCollegiate Union Mission. This year's was held in February , with the aim of presentin g the claims of Jesus Christ to members of the University. In this it was led, on a University level, by Rev. Yet the Mission was only one aspect of the Christian Union 's activity, and its aim, together with that of bringing Christians together in united service , is the aim of the Christian Union through­ ou t the year. The regular programme of the Christ­ ian Union rem ained that of a lunch, taking place on Sundays, toge ther with a meeting for prayer on Wednesday evenings, and a number of groups organised with the object of learning from a cor­ porate study of the B ible. Most of the lunches included talks given either by members of the College or by visiting speakers , and the subjects tackled covered some very diverse areas, ranging from the use of m oney, and the place of the mind in the Christian life, to the second coming of Christ. Tal ks such as these have certainly been use­ ful in teaching a great deal, and in stimulating th ough t about the personal and social implications of living out the Christian faith. Apart from these term-time activities, a sh ort conference was held towards the end of the Long Vacation at Elworth in Cheshire . This not only gave an opportunity for those who went to consider together the activities of the Michaelmas Term, but also an opportunity to use their imaginations in making some rather unusual contributions to local church services.

At the freshm en's squash the Rev. Stephen Abbott, Chaplain of King's College, spoke on the difficulty of following Christ . This is a difficulty on both the individual and the corporate level, and its main expre ssions for the Christian Union has per­ haps been to put into practice its aim of uniting Christians in common seivice. "B u t we have this treasure in earthen vessels, to show th at the trans­ cendent power belongs to God and not to us. " 1974-75

Visiting Group l n the Len t Term a group was set up to visit old people in the city . It was hoped to provid e a little company for some of Cambridge's lonely, house­ bound old people, many of whom had bee n separa ted from their friends and relatives by the Cou ncil 's policy of redeveloping the centre of the city and moving the origjnal inh ab itants to the out­ skirts. The Visiting Group organised tea parties during the Easter and Michae l mas Terms, and arranged for a group to go to the d ress rehearsal of a prod uction at the ADC Theatre put on by the Pye Amateur Dramatics Society during the Easter Term. The Footlights Club very kind ly gave ten

tickets for a matinee of their pantornine in the Michaelmas Term. These two events gave some of the old people the chance to go to the theatre for the first time in more than twen ty years. The Group also made arrangements for some of the old people visited to attend the carol seivices in Queens' and Girton.

Campus In the past year Queensmen have been actively involved in running h oliday camps for child ren during the long vacation , through two organisa­ tions - Campus and Child ren's Relief International (C. R.I.). Both charities are largely run by Cambridge students in their spare time .

The children who come to our camps are almost all from problem families, where h ousing con­ ditions or family tensions m ake some h oliday for the ch ildren imperative, and are refe rred to us by the Social Services . Most also conie from decaying inner city areas, where play facil ities are woefully inadequate.

C. R.I. usually runs a series of eight separate two week camps du ring the summer. These take place under canvas or in church-halls and schools.

Campus, however, has set up permanent site s attached to particular commun ities in Islington and Liverpool at Barton-on-Sea in Hampshire , and at Pen-y-Mynyd d farm near Rhyl respectively. These sites are now largely controlled and financed by the local authorit ies in Islington and Liverpool.

The ex istence of these sites means more holiday s for more children, at a smaller cost and run by local people rather th an by studen ts whom th e childre n h ardly know.

But student effort is still crucial to the running of both organisations, and here the following Queensmen have been involved . James Savory helped on a C. R.I. camp for Birmingham kids run by another Queensman, Paul Good man. M ike Wetherall is lead ing another C. R.I. camp, for Leeds children, this summer. John Lewis was instru­ men tal in setting up the Barton project. He m ade countless journeys to meetings with the local auth ority at Islington to enlist their support. He has also made a number of in tere sting acquisitions for the site - including d iscarded Camb ridge bicycles, a railway good s wagon and a parachute !

John is also Campus's vehicles m an , responsible for keeping our archaic and temperamental Landrovers on the road . Brian Lambkin and Tristram Reynold s came to the camp for Liverpool child ren in North Wales which Dick Carter helped to organ ise.

We all enormously enjoyed providing the repertoire of fun in the summer, and hope th rough our collective enthusiasm to involve people in Queens' and outside in working on the camps.

Graduate Students

The Graduates' Club has maintained its social activities this year, but has diverted much energy into constituting the BA's as a rec.ognisable entity in College.

Cripps Court is to include a very fine Graduate Common Room, but at the time of going to press this has not been completed. The present MCR is known as 'The Angevin Room', so it was thought appropriate to commemorate the other foundress in the new building, by naming the new room 'The Woodville Room'.

The planned programme of dinners has been irregular, owing largely to catering difficulties. In. consequence, attendance has been a little down on last year. The usual Monday meals and formal endof-terrn dinners continue, and a number of speakers, including Professors Swinnerton-Dyer, Bailey and Beament, together with Miss Enid Porter, have addressed the Club in an additional series of occasional dinners.

The main achievements of the year have been of a technical nature. In July, the Club proposed, and the Governing Body accepted, a new financing system, whereby members pay a subscription instead of the old scheme of a College subsidy. As a result, additional newspapers can be taken in the Combination Room, and the hiring of a television set is contemplated, thus encouraging graduates to use the facilities - a task which should become easier when we move. A constitution for the Club (henceforth to be known as the MCR) has been adopted, after the long and weary process of drafting, and awaits Governing Body approval. The Club has also made suggestions which, we hope, will result in a greatly increased number of BA's living in. In all, we have tried to ensure a proper place for the graduate student in College life, so that he may both gain from it and contribute to it more fully.

The Club wishes to express its appreciation of the support and encouragement so freely given by many senior members of College - notably the President, Dr. Bowett; the Club's President, Dr. Bull; and Mr. Parmee, the Tutor for Research Students.

The standard of rowing in the Boat Qub this year showed little improvement, and this was reflected in poor perform­ ances by the First Boat in most of its races. Neither the First nor Second crews rowed well in the Lent Bumps, and they went down one and two places respectively. The lower crews me� with little more success, with the exception of the Fourth eight which, as expected, won its oars. After the Bumps the first two eights raced at Bedford Regatta, where the Second crew had the dubious distinction of beating the First, though the latter was depleted by illness. None the less this was a very good performance by the Second eight, who had the satisfaction of beating the crews that had bumped them the week before, and were in fact the third fastest college second eight.

Training for the May Bumps was characterised by several defeats for the First eight by the Second in "dabbles" between the two boats. It was decided at a very late stage that this necessitated crew changes. As a result the crews had very little time to settle down, and this was evident in the first three days' racing when the First eight went down two places. The Second eight put up a very respectable show, rowing over five times as Sandwich Boat in the Third Division, before it eventually made two bumps in the Second Division. The new eight and the boat trailer, bought for the College by Sir Harry Townend, were eventually delivered in June. The new boat was used for the first time at Henley, and it was found to have a number of faults which have since been rectified. The First Boat trained as usual for ten days at Henley before the regatta. A bye was drawn in the first round of the Ladies Plate, but in the second round the crew came up against University College Dublin, who beat them easily and went on to win the Plate.

Again there was a very poor intake of freshmen who could row. The Club raced crews in both the light and clinker fours events, neither crew distinguishing itself. John Belousis again went for trials, and it is thought that he has a good chance of winning a Blue this year, having rowed in the successful Goldie Crews of the last two years. The Club trained two eights for the Fairburn Cup. The First crew had to be changed in the last week before the race, because of injury, and this may have been a contributory factor towards the very bad performance of the crew. The Second eight did better and finished in the same position in which they started.

The Rugby Union Football Qub was hampered this year by a dearth of talented freshmen, and could only achieve a lowly 8th position in the League. The Cuppers team was strengthened by M.H. Rosser, and produced three creditable performances to reach the semi-final. Here a strong Pembroke team outplayed Queens' in a well­ contested game, and we lost 4-26. We ran a 2nd XV which finished in seventh position in the third division. Repre­ sentative Honours: M.H. Rosser represented the University against Oxford at Twickenham. Seasons Record: played 13, won 6, drawn 0, lost 7. The 1974/5 season started with a record number of freshmen turning out to train, and pros­ pects for the season looked good. In the first match against Magdalene we began well and were holding our own at half time. In the second half however an injury to our hooker meant that the backs were starved of ball, and as a conse­ quence Magdalene won 16-6. Subsequently morale fell, and despite much shouting and cursing when on the pitch, Queens' have only gained one point from six games, and are at present propping up the bottom of the 1st division.

Our captain is however always optimistic, and we un­ doubtedly possess the skills to do better if only we can find

our form. The team's problems can be summed up with the captain's shout to the fourteen of us that we should "go like ten men!" in one match. The end of 1974 saw us with ·One draw, five defeats and three more League matches to play.

After relegation last season, due largely to lack of enthusiasm, the Association Football Qub drew the League Champions, Trinity, in the first round of Cuppers and, to everyone's surprise, produced a blend of skill and aggression which had not previously been a marked characteristic of their game. The first match, at Barton Road, resulted in a fairly evenly balanced 1-1 draw, and in the replay, at

has strengtJ1ened the team with a display of rugged versa­ tility and vocal encouragement which was sadly absent last year. Special mention should be made of Gaizka de lribar and Jean Vignolles, both of whom sustained nasty injuries this term and whose absence has weakened the team con­ siderably. This year sees Queens' near the top of Division III: notable victories in the Michaelmas Tenn were over Corpus (3-2) and Trinity Hall (4-3). In both games the winner was scored in the dying minutes by Anthony Hall, who has led the team with determination and enthusiasm all season. His leadership, combined with the confidence of a solid defence with a superb last line (Roger Knight) and

Trinity, Queens' took the lead in the first quarter of an hour and kept it until late in the game, when the end of the competitive season ca.me with a burst of three goals from Trinity. This season has seen a marked difference in foot­ ball at Queens', with many more good players showing interest. We now have a very active second team, led by Raf Salkie, and the 1st XI are challenging hard for promotion from the 3rd division. This vast improvement in the situa­ tion has been mainly due to the return of linguists ( such as Anthony Hall, the Captain, Dave Stork and Tony Melville) from abroad and the arrival of a very useful batch of fresh­ men (Paul Greengrass, Pete Carew and Roy Cross). Those who remain from last year have mixed in well with the newcomers, and Dave Pollard, another returning linguist,

an effective attack, has made for a successful season, and, hopefully, laid a solid foundation for the future.

The Hockey Qub successfully avoided relegation from the First Division with a series of spirited displays during the Lent Term. A number of fine performances went unrewarded but victories over Jesus and Trinity (in a play­ off) ensured survival. Thus far the new season has been more successful, with three out of the first six matches being won. This is due to some outstanding displays in defence by Richard Cooke, a good set of first years, particularly Roger Brown and Steve Chipkin, and the fact that the forwards have been scoring regularly. Conse­ quently, hopes are high for a creditable position in tl1e League. Moreover, igel Walkcy is a member of the Univer-

sity team, whilst Adam Tuke is Secretary of the Wanderers side.

Following a poor start to the season, the results of the Cricket Qub improved steadily and we finished on a successful note, with two closely fought victories in the last week of term. In view of the few occasions on which we were able to field our strongest side, the overall record of 3 wins, 4 draws and 3 defeats was quite creditable. Un­ fortunately, the early losses included a preliminary round Coppers defeat by Corpus, when, as often happened, our batting did not fulfil its promise. This was the most dis­ appointing feature of the Queens' play: there were at least

Davis, both third years who had previously made only infrequent appearances for the College. All the bowlers had occasion for tearing of hair and gnashing of teeth at the absence of specialist slips, the only blemish on an otherwise capable fielding side. To sum up, an average year for Queens' cricket, but, with 8 of the first team still in resi­ dence, the outlook for 1975 is promising. Newly awarded full colours were: W.B.J. Davis, I.W. Griffiths, R.J. Knight, T.D. O'Donoghue and P.D. Southwick.

At the University level, the Athletics Club was not represented in the Varsity Team, but Peter Frith, Geoff Jones and Don Macarthur all competed for the Second

6 batsmen with the technique to score runs, yet rarely were they able to build an in nings. M.D. Blencowe, A.O. Holt and P.D. Southwick (hitherto regarded only as a bowler) each produced one big score, whilst R.J. Knight batted steadily on several occasions. The 'tail' was sometimes capable of a rescue act, as exemplified by an unbroken last wicket stand of 35 between N. Bidder and T.D. O'Donoghue to give victory at Pembroke, Oxford. In the absence of a genuine slow bowler, the Queens' attack had to try to compensate in accuracy for what was lacking in variety. Most effective was P.O. Southwick, who was capable of sustaining over Jong spells a pace and aggression which troubled many batsmen. Useful support was pro­ vided by the medium pace ofT.D. O'Donoghue and W.B.J.

University Team, Alverstone, against Oxford. In addition, Don Macarthur became the Cambridgeshire AAA champion in both the 5,000 m and 10,000 m. On the College level, Queens' won Division � beating Caius and St. Johns in the final by one point. The success of the College this year was Queens' won Division II, beating Caius and St. John's in the eventers, including Les Davis (who won the Triple Jump), Jan Kaznowski, Brendon Bowles and Mark Lambirth. This marked a break with the recent trend, whereby College Athletics has been dominated by cross-country runners.

This was of particular importance as Caius and John's are also good cross-country Colleges. On the track, Geoff Jones and Don Macarthur ran well. In addition, Queens' have gained some useful athletes this year in William Duggan -

(shot, 400 m and 800 m) and Gavin Reid (who won the 5,000 m). Martin Adu and Hamid Hafiz also produced some good performances. The team suffered from a lack of practice, and was weak in the 100 m and 200 m. It would be encouraging if more field eventers took an interest in University Athletics and so could maintain a good style .

Mark Lambirth and Les Davis represented the University in an indoor match at Loughborough, and Les David came second among the Cambridge University competitors in the Jumps Pentathlon. As a result of our performance this year, we move up into Division I, so we will have to go all out to win that next year.

The Lent Term saw two narrow defeats for the Cross Country Qub - by Reading University in the St. Edmund Hall Road Relay at Oxford, and by St. John's in the final college league race. Runners-up position in the league definitely spelt failure by Queens' standards (after holding the trophy since 1968), but would have caused great rejoicing in most colleges! The Selwyn College relay title was easily retained and Queens' had two representatives in the Cambridge team for the British Universities championships - C.J . Gar forth and D .E. Macarthur. Gar forth went on to represent Britain in the international students' crosscoun try race in Madrid, where he finished sixth. In the Michaelmas Term, G.J. Reid proved to be easily the best freshman in Cambridge, and but for a shin fracture would have run in the Varsity race. As it was, the 8-man team to meet Oxford included two Queensmen, N.H.P. McKinnel and G.C.H. Jones, and Macarthur was selected as the first reserve . Few people were therefore surprised to see Queens' win Cuppers for the seventh successive year. We reached the halfway stage in the league programme with a 100% record, and with Garforth's return from Nigeria at Christmas certain to render our superiority even safer.

The new accommodation enabling freshmen to live in has contributed to a further expansion of the Squash Qub this year. Indeed, the old courts are almost continually booked, and are deteriorating rapidly, much to the embarrassment of one Queens' player whose opponent remarked that he thought the courts better suited for playing fives. In spite of this, Queens' Squash flourishes, and our four teams all perfonned well in the Michaelmas Tenn. The most successful team has been the First, who have won all their matches, and may gain promotion.

Again, the League has been modified, with the top three divisions of last year forming two twelve-team divisions this year. Promotion for Queens' will mean a place in the First Division, which their performance merits. The challenge of the Lent Term will be Cuppers, in which Queens' have succumbed to Fitzwilliam in the last two years. For beginners it proved possible to arrange a knock-out competition, which attracted sixty-four entries, and a plate competition for all first round losers, which produced surprisingly few walkovers, and testifies to the increasing popularity of the game.

The outlook for the Lawn Tennis Club in 1974 seemed distinctly hopeful, and indeed the performances of the 1st VI lived up to its expectations. The team, having dominated the First Division for most of the season, eventually finished as runners-up to Trinity by the narrow margin of two points, with the rest of the field way behind. We were disappointed, to say the least, especially as Queens' had beaten every team, including Trinity. However, owing to the peculiarities of the scoring system, we were denied the title. Nevertheless we can justifiably claim our superiority, which was based not so much on outstanding individual ability as on all-round strength which enabled each couple

to achieve good victories - Tuke and Infante were undefeated as a double pair in the League competition.

Sharpley, Infante and Collinson produced some excellent tennis in their singles matches, with Collinson undefeated, and claiming the scalps of two University Grasshoppers in the course of the season. Success in the League was carried over into Cuppers, where for the second year running we were defeated by the traditional tennis strength of Downing in the Semi-Finals. Perhaps, with a little luck, Queens' will manage to avoid them until the Final this coming season and so, at least, be able to tread the hallowed courts of Fenners. Whilst the 1st VI virtually selected itself during the season, the 2nd VI provided many other students with the opportunity to play competitive League Tennis, and despite some inconsistent results, will remain in Division IV next season. Full colours were awarded to R. Infante and J .R.M. Hill. Full colours were reawarded to R.F.H. Sharpley, P.J. Collinson, A.J.M. Tuke and S.C. Telford.

The 1973-4 season was a satisfactory one for the Badminton Oub, although our League performance was not exceptional, the First team dropping to 5th in the First Division. This lapse was mainly due to the incredible ability of the members of the team to snatch defeat out of the jaws of victory. The Second team disappointingly came second to last in the Third Division, only managing to win six points out of thirty . The Club's outstanding success of the season was in the Cuppers tournament. For the first time in many years, Queens' won its first round match, and went on to reach the final . Teams from Christ's, Emmanuel and St. John's were beaten, but unfortunately Queens' lost 2-3 in the final to a strong Churchill side. W.8 .J. Davis, already a half-blue, continued to play for the University First team, and played in the Varsity match at the end of the season. R.H. Bradbury also represented the University, playing for the Cockerels. The College Cuppers team was completed by A.J. Morris and D.E. Hutchinson, who, along with the other First team players, S.R. Sharma, W.P. Gorman and J.P. Patterson, were awarded College halfcolours.

This has been a sad year for the Table Tennis Qub .

Owing to the lack of facilities in the College, our fortunes have declined sharply, and we are faced with the prospect of both teams being relegated. During the Lent Term there has been a modest influx of hitherto undiscovered talent, and the hopes for the future are somewhat brighter th:1n for some time past.

The 1974 season saw the Water Polo Team in some difficulty. Suffering from a lack of talent and enthusiasm, a full team could only just be raised, which meant there were no reserves on the substitutes bench to take over from exhausted players, and the result was that the College won only one match in the League. As seems to be the case every year, the College was drawn against, and lost to, a strong Churchill team in the Cuppers. After a hard game, and perhaps the team's best performance of the year, the score was 5-3. The arrival of four keen freshers in the Michaelmas Term 1974, three of them of University standard, has put the College back at the top, with good wins against strong St. Catherine's and Churchill teams.

Once again there was little enthusiasm for the Swimming Cuppers, but a team was entered for the Relays, and the College took second place.

The Golf Club has had quite a successful year. The College has won all its matches, and P. Southwick was awarded a Blue. Prospects for next year are good, with P. Southwick as Captain of the University team and with a strong contingent of Queensmen in the Stymies.

Th e main events for the Sailing Qub each year are the inter-College League in the Len t Te nn and Cuppers in the Easter tenn . In tl1e League, possibly due to the in fluence of Rear Commodore Watkins, we were paired with Newnham College . The upshot was that al th ough we managed to fiel d a team at every opportu n ity , ou r results were not good enough for us to gain honours. Th e Cuppers compe titio n was an alm ost unparalleled su ccess story . D u e to byes and some sp irited pro testing , no tably by Rich ard Tuckett , we reached the semi-final and were denied ou r glo ry only by equ ally spirited counte r-pro te sting. In add ition to com­ petitive sailing, ilie College Lark, recently replaced by a newer one , was con sistently used a t the week-ends , and Jonath an Nicholl was often sail ing his 505 in th e winter se ries at G rafham Wate r.

The Gimbing Qub began its 1974 activ ities in early March with a most e nj oy able weekend mee t to Snowd onia - enj oyable in spite o f arriving to find tl1at ou r p rovisional booking of a barn in which to sleep h ad fallen th rough . The members , as an exercise in pragmatic imp rovisation, occupied a neighb ouring barn and went to sleep, only to find on waking nex t morning that their p resence had not gone entirely unnoticed . The natives, pi tch forks at the ready , were less than gl ad to see us , but tl1e transport arrangements proved 1heir reliab ility in a rapid exit. The

expedition fou gh t its way through the customary b re akfast at Wendy's Cafe and bat tl ed on to U anberis Pass, where more conve n tional obstacles were overc ome. Spi ri ts were kep t at their usual level by the eve ning ou ting to tJ1e Ped arn Anns in Nant Peris. Lack of any fu rther sleeping arrange­ men ts resulted in the club spend ing th e nigh t under Cromlech Bould ers - an expe rience to be rec ommended only to our most ineb riated re aders. The resound ing succe ss of this mee t p romp ted our members to exercise their talents in other directions fo r ab ou t six months. In Nov­ ember a meet to De rbyshire was attempted witl1 0u t th e aid of m aps. On the recommendation of one of the party a rath e r dubious le ft tum w as taken somewhere near Worksop . Th is led even tually to an airfield , too flat even fo r the fell-walkers, s o w e p re ssed o n and finally arrived at our plan ned dest ination , Matlock . The climbers stayed iliere and accom pl ished several rou tes on Wild Cat Tor, wh ile the wal kers moved on to Castleton , from whe re they explored Edale and its e nvi rons. The re turn j ourney was punctuated at Gran th am by a seized wheel-bearing in the Presiden t's car, fo rcing the passengers to find their own way home .

Possibili ties of fi nding cheap , reliable transport are now being investigated w ith a view to holding fu rther meets in 1975 .

Queens' Men of the North-West The twenty-fourth Annual Dinner for Queens' men in the North-West took place at The Old Vicarage Hotel, Stretton, near Warrington, on Friday, 5th April, 1974. The Rev. B.F.F. Crane presided and twenty-five members attended. The guest of honour was Dr. T.H. Coaker. We were also de­ lighted to welcome the Rt. Rev. C.R. Claxton, who was responsible for starting this Annual Dinner and presided over it for over twenty years.
