THE SOCIETY The President has been a member of the University Grants Committee since I October 1967, and has recently been appointed a member of the Lord Chancellor's Committee on Legal Education.

He is this year's President of the Society of Public Teachers ofLaw. The President and Fdlows entertained Mr Laffan to Dinner on the occasion of his eightieth birthday on 21 October 1967.

Sir Harold Bailey, who remains a Life Fellow, has been elected to an Honorary Fellowship on retiring from his Professorship.

Mr Beddard has left us to take up a Fellowship at Oriel College, Oxford, and Professor J31ack has returned to the Yale Law School.

We record with deep regret the death of the Right Reverend Joost de Blank, Canon of Westminster, Honorary Fellow of the College.

We welcome as new Fellows Dr Wheatley (Chemistry); Mr Tiley (Law); Mr Morgan (Researd1 Fellow in Psychology); Mr Pearl (Research Fellow in Law); Mr Tillett (Research Fellow in Mathematics); Dr Carroll (Electrical Engineering); Dr Middleton (Biochemistry).

Two Professors will join us in October 1968: Prof. Stein, Regius Professor of Civil Law, and Pro£ Brian, Professor of Botany. · Mr Lawson will relinquish hls Bye-Fellowship and Chaplaincy at the end of the year. The new Chaplain will be the Rev. Brian L. Hebblethwaite.

GIFTS AND BEQUESTS Mr J3rowne has presented to the Library a valuable collection of books about Cambridge. A new class has been formed to accommodate this collection, which is on display in the Upper Library.

Sir Harry Townend (1910) has givcen £1,000 to the Building Fund to provide additional acconunodation in College.

The R.ev. E. F. Wilkinson (1912) bequeathed £50 to the College; and Professor J. A. Chalmers (1923) left £500 to provide an annual prize in Physics, which will be known as the Chalmers Prize.

Professor Blum bas presented two silver dishes of modem design by Gerald Benney; and Professor Milton Van Dyke has made a gift to the Silver Fund of the College.

THE FABRIC The erection of scaffolding to carry out repairs to the Silver Street frontage of Old Court afforded an opportunity to examine the fabric in this area. It was found that the tower at the Q!!eens' Lane comer was in a dangerous condition, probably due to trafficexcited vibration, and much of it had to be pulled down and rebuilt. Unfortunately the old bricks were in too had a state to be re-used, but the new bricks so closely resemble them that the rebuilt tower blends reasonably with the surrounding structure.

The bridge has been thoroughly cleaned by laborious scraping of the unsightly mould and lichen which enveloped it. Its timbers have been treated with wood preservative and surprisingly, since this version is now 65 years old, only a few minor members beneath the decking had to be renewed.

The central heating system has been further extended to include all the rooms in Dokett.

The Rowing events of the 1966--67 season began at th.e end of October with the IVs' Races. G.!!eens' competition strength was made up of one Light N and two Clinker Ns. The Light IV beat Christ's and Emmanuel but lost to 1st and 3rd in the semifinal; the Clinkers raced each. other in the quarter-final, the 'A' eventually losing to 1st and 3rd in the semi-final. B]ue Boat trials were disappointing; two GEeensmen made the last three VIIls but were exclucled in the last sixteen. The Fairbaims this year saw the adoption of different tactics-two equal VIlls were formed containing some experienced oarsmen and some novices. The experiment was successful- the crews were placed 13th and 15th with only a gap of five seconds.

The Lent Term began hopefully with a training camp at Henley for the sixteen from whom the two Lent boats were chosen. The crew selected for the 1st VIII was heavier th.an most (average 13 st. I lb.) and contained four novices including the Cox. The 1st VIII went to the Peterborough Head Races (placed 2nd), Bedford Head (placed 3rd), Reading Head (starting at 25th and moving to nth) and finally the Tideway Head (32nd to 20th).

Weight combined with a long stroke proved a useful combination. This policy was used with great effect in the Lents. GE:eens' IO

began at the No. 5 position on the fust night and by the Saturday night had moved up to No. 2, their highest placing ever in the Lent Races.

The Easter Term began effectively with the Cam Head, when ~eens' came 6th, having paddled the course at a rating of 28 strokes in the minute. After mu.ch speculation the Mays proved as successful as the Lents~the 1st Boat moved from 5th to 2nd, and both the 2nd and 3rd VIDs gained their oars. The 1st VIII then went to Peterborough, and made a repeat oflast year's final of the Senior VIIIs, but losing this year in a close race to the Nottingham and Union R.C., who reached the Thames Cup final at Henley. Henley was disappointing: we were lacking in experience and overawed by the reputation of our competitor, the formidable Emanuel School. We allowed them to beat us rather too

easily.

With twelve of the rst XV still in residence and with a reasonable influx of freshmen, a successful season was expected. N.J. Cosh represented the University against Oxford at Twickenham. P. B. Leach played for the LX Club against the Oxford Greyhounds.

D. W. J. Garrett also played for the LX Club. Despite these losses to the College, our team was initially very successful in the League Competition. After the narrow loss to StJohn's, however, a series of defeats ensued, to which lack of weight and size in the scrum and numerous injuries in the three-quarters contributed.

Luckily, the previous victories ensured our position in the top quarter of the League table. The 2nd and 3rd XVs were not outstanding, owing mainly to lack of numbers.

In Cuppers, the forward problem was solved by the return of II

D. W.J. Garrett and P. B. Leach from the LX Club and J.P. Walmsley from his veterinary studies. Nevertheless, ~eens' were beaten in a hard fought bye-round by a shrewd and opportunist Pembroke side. Before the season ended, 0. Prescott, P. B. Lees and D. B. Dennis were invited regularly to play for the LX Club.

The 1st XV's record was: played 19, won 9, drawn I and lost 9.

In the Michaelmas Term, ~eens' achieved what they so narrnwly missed last season, by gaining promotion into the 1st Division of the League. After the encouragement of success in the opening matches, which included hard-won victories over Jesus and Caius by the odd goal, and the less marginal defeats of Trinity Hall and Trinity 2nd XI, against both of whom ten goals were scored, the College finished with a total of 16 points from nine matches, yielding only to Emmanuers unbeaten record.

Particular credit for this achievement is due to the enthusiastic captainship of Philip Aspden and, for the considerable goal aggregate over the season, to the speed and opportunism of centreforward John Lewis.

Unfortunately. we could not follow up our league success with a good run in Cuppers. Despite the help ofJohn Revill, who had now gained a well-deserved Blue, the College lost 2-I in the first round to Trirnty, fast becoming our 'bogey team' in this competition.

A successful season overall, and an enjoyable one.

The season did not start well. The advent of few good freshmen meant that too much depended on the remainder of the previous year's team, especially, R. F. Oldfield.. the Captain, and G. A. Landon, with the result that our League results in the Michaelmas Term were very poor. The availability of more players after Christmas brought a great change in the team's fortunes. In Cuppers, having disposed of Peterhouse (8-o), we won two close and exciting games with Trinity (2-0) and Caius (r-o), only to fall to a faster St John's team (4-0). Much of the success of the Cuppers team was due to the play of M. W. Bawden, on loan from the Blue¡ side, and T. W. D. Hendry, who always looked dangerous in the circle. During the Easter vacation, a college team took part in the Blackpool Hockey Festival, which, despite a number of unfortunate accidents in the field, proved very enjoyable, thanks to the generosity of Mrs Oldfield, who gave us use of her home for the five days. We won three of our five games.

T. W. D. Hendry and S. J. Lander were selected to represent the Festival XI against an Invitation XI at the end of the festival.

~eens' reached. the semi-:6.nal of the inter-college knockout competition, but there they at last met a side which could claim to be stronger than them in all departments. Before losing to Fitzwilliam in the semi-:6.nal, ~eens' beat Magdalene by 6 I3

wickets, Corpus Christi by 7 wickets, and Emmanuel by 3 wickets. In ea.ch game, the pattern was very much the same: fairly accurate bowling kept Magdalene to 122, M. Pyman taking 4 for 43. Q!!eens' batsmen could cope with this fairly easily, making 126 for 4 (N. Cosh 3.6, M. Pyman 29).

Again, having dismissed Corpus Christi for 105, D. Aers taking 5 for I9, Q!!eens' made 107 for 3; N. Cosh scored. 37 and D. Thorp 24. .

Against Emmanuel~ the bowling was not so good. Emmanuel scored 147 for 8. Q!!eens', however, who had not had the real strength of their batting tested as yet, managed to make 148 for 7.

In the semi-final, Fitzwilliam made 168 for 7, and the Q!!eens' batting faifod, the whole side being out for 125.

Other matches: played 12, won 4, drawn 5, lost 3. The batting averages were headed by S. Lander with 25·7 and N. Cosh, 23 ·2.

However, the Coppers' side batted mconsiderable depth: 7 other players had an average of over 20. ~ens' could not claim to have a good pace attack, though Pyman and Lander bowled many overs at medium pace with some success. Aers headed the averages with 9·6, bowling his slow left arm well. P. Aspden was the leading wicket-taker (a fillip to leg-break bowlers everywhere} with 23 wickets.

Blues were awarded to D. R. Aers and N. J. Cosh, who both went on the University Tour.

The College was able to maintain the strong position it achieved in the previous season. In the heats of the Cuppers, the team was drawn against Clare and Peterhouse, and came second to Clare, thereby remaining in Division 1. Individual victories went to S. Cartmell in the 100 yards and 220 yards, and to M. Turner in the mile; the latter also shared first place in the 3 miles with R. Robinson.

I. Perring, a freshman, represented the University in the Oxford and Cambridge Freshman Match in the Javelin, which he won with a throw of 173 feet 10 inches. He was selected for :the University team in various matches during the Michaelmas and Lent Terms, and in May represented the University in the Varsity match, gaining fourth place and a half-blue.

In the Inter-College Field Events Match in the Lent Term, Qgeens' .finished fifth in Division 1,. ~eensmen taking the Javelin and Shot Putt.

The Cross-Country section won the Cu.ppers, in which M. Turner and R. Robinson shared first place. M. Turner ran as the British Representative in the annual race in Sao Paulo, Brazil, on New Year's Eve, and represented England against Wales in March 1967. R. Robinson was the individual winner in the British Universities Match in February.

Neither the rst nor the 2nd tennis six had a successful season last

year. The first team was relegated to the second division for the first time for eight years, and the second team also went down a division. Progress in Cuppers was scarcely better.

Unfortunately cartilage trouble kept G. A. Landon out of the Grasshoppers side and prevented him from playing in most of the College matches, with the result that the team was substantially weakened. Nevertheless, P. N. Ayton is to be congratulated on winning a place in the Grasshoppers side again, and on putting up many fine performances for the College, partnered by S. R. Kirk.

The year 1966-67 proved to be a very eventful one for the Swimming Club. Having suffered the dreadful apathy pervading the Second Division for the previous year, the Club was relieved to gain promotion to the First Division, although this would probably mean some difficult matches. A favourable augury was 16

the great response to recruiting propaganda among freshmen: a total of fifteen attended the Freshers' Squash and, of them, five showed some promise. Unfortunately two of this number were prevented from swimming by injury and illness.

Still there remained a working number of swimmers, but because all Water-Polo matches were played in our own bath time, there was great difficulty in moulding the team together, despite its obvious potential. This potential was not fully realised until the last match of the term, against Churchill, which ended in a draw, .making our final position in the League 4th out of six colleges.

The Swimming Relays better reflected our ability, for out of the ten relays we won six.

It was in the Lent Water-Polo Cuppers that the team reached the height of its ability. Now reinforced by one of the two freshmen previously unable to swim, the Club turned out to be veritable giant-killers, coming second after being beaten in the final by St Catharine's by only 8-6. We were slightly less successful in swimming competitions, coming 2nd in the Medley Relay. but being disqualified in the Freestyle Relay.

The final event of the swimming year was the Easter Term's Inter-College Gala, in which we maintained for the third year our overall position as Third, not because of individual abilitywe only gained placings in four events-but because we could draw on sufficient depth of swimmers to enter and complete every event. / Apart from G. Thwaites's outstanding ability in swimming events, it was impossible to single out any of the seven regular water-polo players, so well did they finally blend together, and so colours were awarded to J. Doubell, W. Ellis, and G. Haynes, and re-awarded to N. Couper, J. Cuthbert, P. Leach and G. Thwaites.

G. Thwaites is to be further congratulated on gaining his second blue for swimming, and for being appointed University Captain 1967- 8.

Squash at College level started the year on the downgrade after its peak in the last few years,. and this trend continued throughout the year. The First Team moved somewhat unluckily into the third division, having been in the first division only a. year earlier, while the o!her three college sides managed to end the year in virtually the same places as they started.

We were not so lucky with freshmen this year as we have been in the past. M. A. Lloyd played No. I in the First League team all year, and twootherfreshmen, S.J. LanderandR.J. P. Church, also made very useful contributions to this side. Our real strength,. however, was once again to be found at University level, where this year we had both the captain, T. W. D. Hendry, and the secretary, P. N . Ayton, of the Blues side, as well as the captain of the Ganders, D.R. Aers.

As a result, the College once again had a very useful Cuppers side, and had very little trouble winning the first two rounds against Corpus and Clare. In the semi-final against Churchill, we were given a much harder game, but good wins by our University players were sufficient to provide a winning margin, and the story was exactly the same in the final against Trinity. This victory gave ~eens' a hat-trick of Cupper wins, and the prospects of continuing this winning streak next year appear to be quite good, as both P. N. Ayton and D.R. Aers will still be here.

The success of the College in the club matches depended entirely on the strength of the side that we were able to put out-if any of our Blues were available. Thus the results were mixed, with the College winning three of their seven matches, while a team appearing in the ~eens' colours drew their match with a very strong Brighton S.R.C. side.

Colours were awarded to M. A. Lloyd, R. J. P. Church and S. J. Lander.

It has been another very successful year, for although our full-ibore Cuppers first team of A. J. Morphew, M. J. C. Haszlakiewicz, G. E. Pipe and R. Blakeborough-Pownall came to grief over a technicality after reaching the final in fine form, G. E. Pipe and M. J. C. Haszlakiewicz convincingly carried home the small-bore trophy.

Individually, G. E. Pipe shot consistently well prone with .22 and was re-awarded his small-bore colours for shooting against Oxford for the Heslop Cup. Also with .22, M. J. C. Haszlakiewicz won the university championship prone, and in threepositional shooting was re-awarded his colours for captaining Cambridge to victory against Oxford.

The latter was even more successful with a ¡match rifle, for he became only the fifth undergraduate ever to win the Cambridge Cup, won the 1200-yard aggregate at Bisley, gained a half-blue, and shot for Scotland m the international match.

Finally, A.J. Morphew had another fine year with a service rifle and again won a half:..blue for shooting in the Chancellors.

The Chess Club had a busy, if not an outstandingly successful, season. Only a small number of p1ayers had left the previous summer, and we gained a good number of freshmen, most of whom p1ayed fairly regularly for the College. This resulted in our being able to increase the number of College teams; we entered three teams in the Cambridge and District League, and two in the Cambridge University League.

Both our A teams did well. In the District League, we were top throughout the season, but nnfortunately slipped into second place 19

at the end. In Division Il of the University League, we never quite reoovered from a bad start, and so missed promotion to Division 1 In the Cuppers knockout competition, which took place in the Lent Term, we did better than ever before! We beat Downing in the first round, and then only lost to St Catharine's, the surprise conquerors ofthe favourites, Pembroke, by a very narrow margin.

B. Jennings was awarded his College chess colours last year.

Once again, Chess Club bread-and-cheese lunches were held every Monday throughout the Michaelmas and Lent Terms, and were a great success. The proceeds are being used to buy equipment for the Club.

r966-7 was an indifferent year for Q!!eens' table tennis. The freshmen, although keen, were not over-talented. As a result, the first team, after their successes in recent years, had to be content with just holding their place in the First Division. The other five teams did well enough by remaining in their respective divisions, which was a notable effort considering that four of these teams play in Divisions Two and Three.

In Cuppers, Q!!eens' lost in the first roW1d to Trinity. This was disappointing, but was only further evidence of the temporary decline of the Club.

The Club enjoyed a season of mixed fortunes, with relegation to the Third Division at the end of it. This was the second year running that the College had been rdegated.

However, there were some outstanding individuals. S. R. Kirk 20

was Captain of the University team, and both he and D. R. Langslow were re-awarded half-blues.

D.R. Langslow, with C.H. Oon of Downing, beat S. R. Kirk and G. R. Woolhouse in the doubles final of the British Universities Badminton Championship.

With these three players, and a Cockerel Club member, G. S. Haynes, ~eens' won Badminton Coppers for the third year runnmg.

Owing to an unfortunate lack of golfers in the College, we were unable to produce impressive results, winning one out of the five matches played. The few who did play, however, did so with commendable enthusiasm and provided the team with valuable talent even in the most adverse weather conditions.

This was the second season at Grafham Water S.C. The year was highlighted by the purchase of a Firefly dinghy by the College for members of Q!!eens'. Membership within the College rose from six to twelve. Cuppers in the Lent Term was somewhat disastrous. M. Rippon won the Freshman's Trophy, and two members of the College sailed in University teams regularly though neither was on the Varsity team. In 1968 we look forward to increased membership and perhaps the purchase of another boat.

Although some of the debates reached a good standard, attendances in general remained disappointingly low, chiefly owing to a lack of participation by freshmen.

In the :first debate of the year the motion, 'This House would increase the power and responsibility of the Trade Union leaders', was defeated, an attempt to create a division on other than p arty lines having failed. Later in the term the motions, 'This House would do without Varsity' and 'This House would bum down the boat-house', were both defeated through vigorous defences of these institutions by their representatives.

In the Lent Term, the Society refused to regret being born into the twentieth century, and also to bring back Guy Fawkes.

Finally, there was a debate on Britain's world role, entitled 'Great Britain or Little England?', in which Great Britain emerged victorious.

During the year, two joint debates were held with Newnham ,, College, one at home and one away, and the usual good attendances were attracted.

Two discussion meetings led by visiting speakers were also held during the Michaelmas Term; the topics concerned were the Vatican Council and Humanism respectively.

During 1966-67 the activities of the Society were not as diverse as in previous years, and efforts were channelled into putting on three very successful main concerts.

In the Michaelmas Term, R. M. Bloodworth conducted a concert in Great Saint Mary's Church. This was well attended and the performances were of a standard to justify the Society's periodic appeal for greater attention in the town. The works were Bach's Cantata No. 159 and Haydn's 'Nelson' Mass, in which the soloists were Suzanne Flowers (soprano), John Marston (alto), Alastair Thomson {tenor), and Simon Vaughan (baritone).

The Lent Term Concert also attracted a large audience, this time to the College Chapel. B. Wood conducted a Bach Cantata and Faure's Requiem, with Suzanne Flowers (soprano) and Simon Vaughan (baritone) as the soloists.

The May Week Concert, staged in its usual 'salon' style in Hall, again proved a popular entertainment. The first half consisted of a number of light chamber works, including Warlock's 'Capriol' suite played by the College String Orchestra under the direction of C. R. Burn. Simon Vaughan (baritone) paid his third visit of the year to the Society to give a very well received performance of Stanford's Sea Songs. The time after the interval was devoted to' Carminativa ', a work abstracted, re-orchestrated, and

generally re-oriented, from Bizet and others, by Dr Beament.

R. M. Bloodworth conducted the chorus and 'prepared' orchestra, with Stephanie Ginn as Carmen, John Potter as Don Jose, Andrew Q!!ayle as Escamillo, and C. E. Q_uinney as the Narrator.

Besides these main concerts, there were organ recitals by C. R. Burn (organ scholar), B. Wood, and guest organists. A very unusual concert was that in aid of the Royal College of Organists Centenary Appeal. Tlrie Society was host to George Guest, David Willcocks, and the choral scholars of St John's College and of King's College, who performed a varied programme ofchoral and organ music.

Following the usual freshman readings and the smoking concert in the early part of the Michaelmas Term, S. E. Wakelam and I. M. Godfrey presented Max Frisch's Andorra. As usual, the production was staged in the Fitzpatrick Hall Both Varsity and The Cambridge News gave favourable reviews to the production.

Bats' activity in the Lent Term was exclusively experimental.

B. Parnaby led several very interesting evenings of improvisation, and performances of experimental plays were given to members of the Society.

I. R. Wright directed Othello for the summer main production in Cloister Court. There is no doubt that this excellent and very profitable production did much to strengthen the Bats' reputation 25

as one of the most active and popular of the Cambridge dramatic societies.

Several members of the Society went to the Minack: Theatre in Cornwall during the Long Vacation to take part in the Cambridge University Players' production of A Man for all Seasons. The production's success made a satisfying conclusion to a very good year.

GRADUATE STUDENTS The College now has about seventy Graduate Students in residence-a small increase on last year's number. The new arrangements introduced last year have been continued, the informal buffet lunches given by the President and Fellows in the Munro Room being especially popular.

Dr Beament resigned as Graduate Tutor at the end of the Michaelmas Tenn on his appointment as Reader in Insect Physiology, and Dr Prentis took over the post temporarily for the remainder of the Academic year. Mr Mathias was appointed his successor.

After the redecoration of the Angevin Room, activities of the Graduate Club were able to continue from the Lent Term, when three informal meetings were held with guest speakers. Professor Knights succeeded Sir Harold Bailey as President of the Club, the latter having been President since the inception of the Club in 1953.

TheAnnualMeetin gwasheldon Saturday, 17 Jwie. The Treasurer reported that n8 new members had joined the Club and that there was a credit balance of £296 at the end of the year. Individual sahscriptions to the President's Portrait Fund had been high, with corresponding reduction in the donation required from the Club.

About 180 members were present at the Dinner. 'The Club' was proposed by Dr Ingram and 'The College' by Mr Adu. The President replied.
