Sir Harold Bailey has been elected an Honorary Fellow of the Asiatic Society, Calcutta.

We congratulate Dr Holloway on his Readership in Modem English and Dr Beament on his Readership in Insect Physiology.

Dr Goodyear is now Hildred Carlile Professor of Latin at Bedford College in the University of London.

Dr Bowett delivered a lecture to the American Society of International Law in May, 1966. He is at present in Beirut, Lebanon, as General Counsel to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees.

The Right Reverend Joost de Blank, Honorary Fellow, is now Assistant Bishop in the Diocese of Southwark.

Sir Leslie Rowan, Honorary Fellow, is Chairman of Vickers Ltd. We have welcomed in our Fellowship this year Professor C. L. Black, Luce Professor ofJurisprudence at Yale.

Three Research Fellows have left us: Dr Kingston for the University of New York at Albany, Dr Hazzledine for Oxford and Dr Sporton for Aberdeen.

We welcome as new Research Fellows Mr M. P. D. BakerSmith, in English; Mr R. S. Huss~ in Modem Languages; Mr J. Diggle, in Classics; and Mr D.J. Silk in Electrical Sciences.

THE FABRIC Work has continued on the restoration and redecoration of the rooms and staircases of Old Court; 'B ', •C' and the greater part of' E' including the basement cloakroom have now been finished.

'A' staircase, the gateway interior and the reading-room entrance lobby will also receive attention so that, on completion, the whole of this part of the College will, it is hoped, be in good shape for many years to come.

The bath-tubs in Dokett basement, long past their prime, have been renewed and two extra showers installed.

The year started with a promising Light IV which lost narrowly to St Catharine's in the first round. The Clinker IV lost to Trinity, the eventual winners, in the second round, after defeating Clare on the first day. The Fairbairn Vill with four freshmen finished 9th equal. It is to be added that at this point the traditional 'toothpick' oars were discarded in favour of the more popular barrelled blades, and weight training was introduced to the Club.

Meanwhile R. G. Ward gained a second trial cap and went on to row in the Blue Boat at 5 for the second year. The Lent Boat was a re-arranged Fairbairn Vill and did well to retain its position at 5th, as five of its members had not rowed in Bumping Races before. P. J. LeRoy joined the VIII for the Head of the River races; at Bedford the first boat finished 5th and the second VIlI won the Clinker pennant; at Reading we finished 25th and at Putney 32nd.

J.P. Walmsley strengthened the May Boat, which was gaining experience rapidly under the coaching of Alf Twinn (Boatman C.U.B.C.), M. H.F. Morley (Captain Q.C.B.C. 1961-2), Dr K. A. Williams (T.R.C.) and I. Mccallum (Q.C.B.C.). On the first night we were unlucky to miss one bump by a foot and fell to Jesus. The following night we fell to Lady Margaret, after a valiant effort to catch Jesus, succeeding by all but three feet. The last two 9

nights we rowed over with little danger from Clare and finished 5th.

R. G. Ward was able to join the Henley Boat, and we entered and won Senior Vill's at Peterborough Regatta. At Henley we qualified for the Regatta., winning easily, and were drawn against Trinity, Head of the River at Cambridge. We led by a length at the barrier but failed to consolidate and lost by ½length. Despite the intake of inexperienced but promising oarsmen, the Club maintained its prestige and is in a good position to exploit this talent next year.

C. M. H. Gibson played at fly-half in all four Internationals for Ireland and later toured Australia and New Zealand with the British Lions, playing at fly-half and centre in several tests. He captained the University against Oxford at Twickenham. P. A. Kitchin, playing on the left wing, also represented the University against Oxford. N. J. Cosh played for the LX Club against the Oxford Greyhounds. D. J. Chambers also played for the University, and J. D. Perkins, P. B. Leach, J. P.Walmsley and I. W. Warburton for the LX Club.

The season of 1965-6 saw~eens' winners of both the League Championship and, for the first time in the history of the competition, the University 'Coppers'.

The League Championship began badly when J. D. Perkins was injured in the first game against Caius, and was unable to play again until the Lent Term. R. C. Q. Farmer captained the side in his absence. Thereafter, however, there were few setbacks. A strong pack gave consistent possession of which a good half-back combination allowed the three-quarters to make full use. Only IO

Downing managed to hold us to a 3-3 draw, although several colleges, notably Pembroke, proved stem opposition. The final game, against Fitzwilliam, was won ~ to bring us the Championship by a single point.

Strengthened by C. M. H. Gibson, P.A. Kitchin and N.J. Cosh, and with a convincing win in the League behind us, the College could face a none too kind Cuppers draw with confidence.

Again, despite injuries, controlled forward play and intelligent three-quarter work brought results. Only a replay against Emmanuel temporarily halted our progress to the Final against Fitzwilliam House. ~eens' were fortunately able to bring back P.A. Kitchin and C. M. H. Gibson for the occasion. While O!!eens' lacked the initiative in the first ha]ÂŁ shrewd kicking by Gibson later paved the way to a 13-8 win, a storming finish to a most successful season.

What could easily have been a season of concrete achievement turned out one of frustration and near misses. In both the League and Coppers glory beckoned for a time, but ultimately disappeared.

The opening matches ofthe Michaelmas Term could hardly have been more propitious. In the first, Trinity Hall were crushed 12--0 and it was not until well into the season that a valiant defence decided it was time they concedecJ a goal. Aspirations to the championship were crushed by the decisive defeat by Churchill, and those of gaining promotion vanished in the mud of Jesus, where a draw was achieved when only an 8-o win would have been good enough.

In the Lent Term, hopes for Cuppers were high on the return ofNen Tabemer, after he had at last gained a well-merited Blue.

Early-round wins at Corpus Christi and Gonville and Caius heightened these aspirations, and it was, therefore, a tremendous disappointment to lose, extremely unluckily, by the odd goal in the quarter-final against Trinity.

Nevertheless, it was all in all a successful season,. and team spirit always remained high, which is perhaps the main thing!

Although the team was potentially the best for many seasons it started badly by losing eight matches in a row, after winning the first one. However, towar,ds the end of the Michaelmas Term, the team showed more of its potential and the last few league matches were won., with the result that the team ended in the middle of the first division table.

The second XI under the leadership ofD. Pain had a successful term and very nearly gained promotion from its division.

The Lent Term started with a number of cancelled matches but, once the tem1 got under way, the team began to play well.

A spirited game against a very strong Caius team-extra time was needed to decide the issue-produced a win in the first rnWl.d of Cuppers. In the second round OEeens' were very unfortunate to lose a closely fought match with St Catharine's. The result was 4-3, again after extra time.

With ten of the side that had won Cuppers in 1965, and with an influx of good freshmen, there were great expectations of another successful season. However, we could not repeat the feat and, in fact, played disappointingly in Cuppers. In contrast we gained very good results in the other College and Club games, and the cricket was always enjoyable.

In Coppers, we met Magdalene in the first round. ~eens' batted .first and, after an early collapse, eventually made 158.

This was not expected to be enough against a strong batting side on a good wicket, but backed up by excellent fielding, Kemp and Revill sent Magdalene back for 52. In the second round against Emmanuel, Emmanuel batted first and scored 152-8 despite some good bowling by Aspden. ~eens' collapsed, only Thorp and Chambers really troubling an Emmanuel attack, and were all out for 85.

The College record for the term was: played 15, won 7, drawn 3, lost 5. M. W. Bawden had a very successful season with the bat, scoring 356 runs at an average of 50·9. T. G. Pratt, although not in the Cuppers side, batted well especially against Pembroke scoring 8r after ~eens' had been29-7. R. E.J. Chambers (37·0) and D.R. Aers (35·5) made few appearances except in Cuppers.

N. Tabemer and P. J. Derlien were a sound opening pair and M. R. Barlow, P. Souster, D. Thorp, N. Armistead all batted well at times.

P. Aspden was the most successful bowler, taking 27 wickets at 14·1 apiece. He bowled very well all season and was very accurate for a leg-spinner. M. W. Bawden shared the spin attack and took 13 wickets. The opening attack ofJ. A. Revill and C. H Kemp produced a lot of wickets and R. C. Q. Farmer and R. M. Peskin backed them up very well-the latter certainly kept us amused.

N. Taberner's captaining was first class and his close £elding was an example to all. D. W. J. Garrett kept wicket very well during the season and took some magnilicent chances in Coppers.

We congratulate N.J. Cosh and R . E.J. Chambers on being awarded their Blues, and D.R. Aers, M. W. Bawden and C.H. Kemp on being elected to the Crusaders.

Full colours were awarded to: D. Aers, M. W. Bawden, P. J. Derlien, A. W. Diamond, D. W.J. Garrett, T. G. Pratt and J. A. Revill. Half colours were awarded to J. Fletcher and W. M . B . Ritchie.

In the Inter-College competitions th.e Club had more success than in previous years. In the Field Events competition the team came first, D. Adu and D. Lavelle gaining individual victories in the triple jump and discus, respectively. In the heats of the Cuppers competition, held in the Michaelmas Term, we finished second to Clare and remained in the :first division. A weakened team in the College Relays could only finish fourth in the second division.

S. Cartmell was elected to the Alverstone Club.

J. D. Scarr, R.. L. Moorby and D. Adll represented the University in matches during the Michaelmas and Lent terms,. and along with R.H. Gorges were invited to compete in the Varsity Match on 7 May. D. Adu was awarded a Full Blue for competing in the triple jump. J. D. Scarr (4th in 100 yards), R. L. Moorby (2nd in the Pole Vault) and R. H. Gorges (4th in the Discus) were awarded Half-Blues.

The cross-country section came fifth in the Cuppers, C. A. R. Robinson being the mdividual winner of the race, and second in the League Competition, D. M. Turner and C. A. R. Robinson continued their successful way on the national scene. D. M. Turner came a dose second in the English Cross-Country Championships.

Q!!eens' had another very successful season, being runners-up in the League for the third year in succession, th.is time to a strong Trinity Hall side. In Cuppers, we reached the final fairly comfm;tably, at the expense of Trinity in the semi-final, to again face a Downing side full of Blues and Grasshoppers. Despite some very close matches, Downing took all the singles to beat us 6-o. G. A. Landon put up a fine performance to reach match point against the University Secretary, R. Hodgkinson, but just failed to clinch victory. The League second team had an uninspiring season, :finishing in the middle of their division, but the enthusiasm of many players augurs well for future seasons.

Congratulations go to B. Kileff on gaining his Full Blue, and to J. H. Vallat (Captain), G. A. Landon (Secretary) and P. Ayton on winning their Grasshoppers.

At the end of the season, full colours were awarded to P. Ayton, and re-awarded to F. Cammack, B. Kileff, S. R. Kirk, G. A. Landon, J. K. Landon and J. H. Vallat.

In spite of a very successful season in 1964- 5, the Club having lost their star material chose to be relegated to the Second Division rather than to fight a rear-guard action in the First Division. This proved a mistake. The apathy that exists in most of the Second Division clubs was such that the team considered itself very lucky toplayagainstafullcomplementfromanotherCoUege:oftenthere was no opposition at all. It is somewhat meaningless to describe a season under these conditions as successful, but the Club did come out at the top of the Second Division in the water-polo and the medley and free-style relays, largely due to walk-overs.

The response from the College was generally poor, but the freshmen did include one outstanding swimmer, G. Thwaites, and the team at once benefited from his experience.

The Annual Inter-College Swimming Gala drew on a surprising amount of latent potential within the College and Qgeens' finished 3rd equal with Peterhouse.

Colours were awarded this year to G. Thwaites and N .

Couper, and re-awarded to P . Leach, J. Cohen and J. Cuthbert.

As last year, the College ha.d a very strong side for the Cuppers Tournament, comprising three University Blues, T. W. D. Hendry, P. N. Ayton, and J. H. Vallat, and two members of the Ganders S.R.C., 13. Kileff and D. Aers, and repeated its victory in the Tournament, but more convincingly, winning comfortably in all the fifteen rubbers played.

With the cream of the College talent skimmed off by the University Clubs, it is hardly surprising that the four league teams had a mediocre season; the first two teams both dropped a division, unfortunately, and the third and fourth teams finished up in the same divisions in which they had started. However, the purchase of two squash racquets for College use has aroused interest in the game, especially amongst beginners, and it is hoped hidden talent will be exposed for future seasons.

The College played eight 'outside' futures- more tha.n usual-of which four were won and four lost. College colours were awarded to P. N. Ayton, D. Aers, J. Landon, P. G. F. Dibben, and L. Mbanefo.

T. W. D. Hendry is to be congratulated on his appointment as Secretary of the University, and P. N. Ayton, a freshman, and J. H. Vallat on being awarded their Blues; B. Kileff played for the University most of the first term, but just failed to obtain selection. Also, D. Aers is to be congratulated on Iris election to the Ganders S.R.C. in his first year.

The Club and its members have had a highly successful year.

Four teams were entered in the falling plate Cuppers, b1.1t the lower three were disappointingly knocked out in the preliminary rounds. The first team of A. J. Morphew, G. E. Pipe, M. J. C. 17

Haszlakiewicz, and R. Blakeborough-Pownall, however, were more successful and eventually won the final in a very fast time.

In Small-Bore prone shooting we were represented by G. E. Pipe who shot consistently well and helped Cambridge to beat Oxford for the Heslop Cup with a new record score.

In the Standing and Kneeling match against Oxford for the Lennan Cup we were represented by M. J. C. Haszlakiewicz (Captain) and J. H. Ramsay; the latter producing the highest Cambridge score. These two, together with G. E. Pipe, were awarded University Colours.

In Full-Bore both M. J. C. Haszlakiewicz and A. J. Morphew shot well throughout the year. The former won the Caldwell Cup at Easter Bisley, and captained the F. W. Jones Match Rifle team, while the latter shot in the W. F. Jones team, won the Young Rifleman Aggregate trophy at the Imperial Meetingan excellent achievement-and finally rounded off a fine year's shooting by being awarded a Half-Blue for the Chancellors' match against Oxford.

Last season was a fairly successful one. Nine freshmen joined the Club and, although a couple later lost interest, the others played fairly frequently all season.

During the Michaelmas Term our first team played its seven matches in Division I of the Cambridge University League. We gained a total of 13½ points out ofa possible 35, beating only one of the other teams and drawing once. We were placed seventh out ofeight and were relegated to Division II. We had but a brief run in the Coppers Knock-Out Competition, which was held in the Lent Term. Pembroke College beat us

3- 2; we did not even have the dubious consolation of being beaten by the eventual winners!

Our greatest successes came in the Cambridge and District League. & we had had no team in this League in the previous season, the two teams we entered had to go in Division IL The A team won all its matches, finishing a clear top. Th.e B team did not do so outstandingly well, but it still came second with 14 points out of a possible 20. Both these teams were promoted to Division I, and we have high hopes for further success by the A team.

Chess Club bread-and-cheese lunches were held on each Monday in full Term, and were a great success, being the only regular club meetings. A number of players-S. C. Mills, D. Welch, M.J. Pitt, G. A. Landon, P.A. Leonard and J. W. Wadkin-were awarded College Chess Colours during the year, and the Secretary-D. Welch- was elected Junior Treasurer of the University Chess Club.

The first team of F. Cammack, D. Adu ap._d R.R. Foulkes had a successful season in the League, losing only one match, and were thus unlucky to lose the League Championship on game average.

The fourth team was relegated to the third division, but :five ~eens' teams remain in the :first three divisions.

In Cuppers the regular .first team, with P. N. Ayton, lost 4-5 to Pembroke in the Final, th.e deciding set being lost at deuce in the third game.

Much of the College's success can be attributed to F. Cammack who remained unbeaten, but for one game, throughout the whole season, and thus not unexpectedly won the College Tournament for the third year in succession.

Owing to a shortage of players the College was only able to run one team in the League. The season was the most unsuccessful for some years, with. relegation from the first division at the end of the season.

On a more personal level much greater success was achieved.

D. R. Langslow and S. R. Kirk were re-awarded Half-Blues for badminton, whilst S. R. Kirk and G. R. Woolhouse won the doubles event in the British Universities Badminton Championship. With these three players available it was no surprise when Qgeens' won the Badminton Coppers again.

The 1965-6 season showed a decline in popularity in this sport on an inter-College basis, though on a University level there was a distinct improvement. There was no Inter-College League during the Michaelmas Term, and the team had to make do with friendly fixtures. In the Lent Term, we narrowly failed in the first round of Cuppers against St John's.

This year saw the inception of the College league racing in the Lent Term. We managed to head the second division, and the team racing experience gained proved valuable in Cuppers. We did not sail consistently enough, however, to get further than the semi-final. Two members of the Club have been sailing regularly with the University team a-nd with this year's exceptionally good recruiting figures, vastly improved sailing water at Diddington Reservoir and the prospect of the College owning its own Firefly, next season should be a very good one.

Members showed little approval of the Committee's choice of motions for debate during the year, and appropriately it was the motion, 'This House is Shackled by Tradition', that was the only one to be carried. Attendances at debates improved during the year as more freshmen were attracted.

The Society began by debating the motion 'Religious Instruction is Illiberal Education'. After defeating a No confidence motion in the government, an emergency debate on the Rhodesia crisis, held jointly with the C.U. African Students' Club, provided for many clashes of opinion before an audience of over fifty. In the last debate before Christmas the Society refused to accept the motion, 'This House Believes that History does not Repeat Itself'. fu the Lent Term the traditional political motion was slightly modified to get speakers of contrasting political colours on the same side. And a return to the party line was not foreseen when it was decided to reject the motion, 'Damn Your Principles, Stick 23

to Your Party'. A joint debate with Newnham College attracted the usual high attendance, especially when the motion,. 'This House prefers the "News of the World" to the News of the World', was to be debated. However, th.e Society came to its senses just in time to defeat the motion.

In contrast to the successes of many of the debates, the attendances at discussions were very disappointing. The discussions covered such topics as politics, literature, language schools, Christian ethics, and computers. Only the discussion, 'What is Happening to Parliament?' led by Mr Geoffrey Wilson, drew a large audience.

During the Michaelmas Term a concert of music by Heinrich Schulz was given in Chapel. The soloists in the Christmas History, the main work, were Miss Anya Wibranice, soprano, N. F. Jamieson, tenor, and Mr David van Asch, bass. The work was accompanied by a small orchestra, and the concert was organised and conducted hr. C.R. Burn.

In the Lent Term a concert was given consisting of Schubert's Mass in G, Bach's Cantata No. 140, and settings of two Psalms by Gustav Holst. The soloists were Miss Suzanne Flowers, soprano, Mr Alistair Thompson, tenor, and Mr Brian Kay, bass. The concert was organised and conducted by R. M . Bloodworth.

In May Week an entertainment was provided in Hall in the traditional manner. The choir first sang Brahms' Liebeslieder Waltzes, ably accompanied by R. E. A. Phillips and J. Santer, then, after a number of solo items, a group of :instrumentalists

gave a spirited performance of Saint-Saens' Carnival of Animals, conducted by R. M. Bloodworth.

A number of organ recita1s by members of the College and guest organists were given in the College Chapel.

During 1965-6 'The Bats' maintained their reputation as one of the most active and popular of the Cambridge dramatic societies with several successful productions. Following the usual freshman readings and the smoking concert in the first part of the Michaelmas Term, I. R. Wright and C. E.~inney presented John Osborne's Luther, a production which led Varsity to congratulate all concerned-despite the overwhelming limitations of the Fitzpatrick Hall.

In the Lent Term a freshman team, led by R. Priest, put on the revue A Night at the Uproar.

The Shakespeare production in Cloister Court for the Summer main was Henry IV Part Two, directed by C. J. Vallance. The weather was perfect for the production which, with excellent costumes and a sparkling pace, had much to recommend it to responsive and lively audiences.

M.any past 'Bats' members, as well as present ones, descended once again, as the 'Cambridge University Players' on the Minack 25

Theatre in Cornwall during the Long Vacation to take part in Frank Bechhofer's Production of Henry IV Part One~an ambitious project, but one which, in the magnificent natural setting of the sea-cliffs, and with an exceptionally strong cast and backstage team, was a resounding success, and a most satisfactory conclusion to the year.

GRADUATE STUDENTS There are now about eighty Graduate Students in residence and a number of new mangements have been introduced to bring them more closely into the life of the College. It has proved possible this year for all the unmarried freshmen Research Students to live in, while the Graduate freshmen met the Fellows at a special dinner in October. The senior Research Students are invited to dine on High Table as College guests during their second and third years. The Munro Room has also made it possible for the Fellows and Graduate Students to meet informally at fortnightly intervals during Term for a buffet lunch.

Activities in the Angevin Room are organized. by a small committee of students, of which Sir Harold Bailey has been President; he will be succeeded by Professor Knights. The room has been redecorated and furnished in contemporary fashion, and a number of facilities added. Small informal evening dinners are held there, together with evening meetings which often have a guest speaker.

DINNER IN THE NORTH-WEST The Annual Dinner for Q!!eens' men in the North-West was held for the sixteenth successive year on 28 March 1966, at the Bull and Royal, Preston, when twenty-six members were present in addition to the Bishop of Blackburn, who presided. The Guest of Honour was Dr J. M. Prentis.

The 1967 Dinner will be held on Friday, 14 April,.in Manchester.

C. S. B. Swinley (1920 ), after a very eventful life in the Navy, has settled with his family in Flaxley where he is appeals organiser for the Gloucestershire Branch of the British Red Cross Society as well as working for the Welfare, Old Folk and British Sailors Societies.

The Annual Meeting was held on Saturday, 18 June. The Treasurer reported that 107 new members had joined the Club during the year. The credit balance in June 1966 was £rn1. I 5s. 1d. In view of heavily increasing costs (for example, the printing of the Annual Record cost £243) it was agreed to increase the Life Subscription to J½ guineas.

About 190 members were present at the Dinner. Professor Hagenbuch proposed the toast, 'The College and the Club', and the President replied.

ADDRESSES WANTED It will be of great service to the College if members of the Club will kindly inform the Keeper of the Records of any changes in their permanent addresses or in those of their friends.
