THE SOCIETY Professor Sir Harold Bailey has received the Honorary Degree of LL.D. of the University of Perth, Australia, and an Honorary Fellowship of the School of African and Oriental Studies in the University of London.

Mr Parmee has resigned from the office of Steward and is succeeded by Mr Hughes.

Mr Deakin is now a Life Fellow of the College. His place as Junior Bursar has been taken by Dr Cohen.

Mr Hagenbuch has resigned his Senior T~torship, becoming Financial Tutor, and Dr Bull is now Senior Tutor. Mr Hagenbuch is to be Professor of Economics and Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at Kent University from October. Grateful mention should be made here of his work for the Club, as Treasurer and as organiser of the Club week-ends.

We have been happy to welcome Dr Holloway back after his leave of absence in Greece.

Dr Sugden is to be congratulated on his F.R.S. and on his appointment (which means that we must, regretfully, lose him) as Research Director, Thornton Research Centre, Shell Research.

Dr Radley has left us to take up an appointment in the University of Sheffield.

Dr Prentis has just returned from a six-months assignment at the University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur under the Technical Co-operation Scheme of the Colombo plan.

We welcome three new Fellows. Professor Blum, ofYale, is in Cambridge for the year as Pitt Professor of American History and Institutions; Dr Machin is a biophysicist and a ~eens' man; and Dr Pullan is a historian from Trinity College.

1b.e election has been announced of Richard Timothy Francis King, B.A., to a Fellowship; he will be admitted during the summer. Mr King will be Assistant Director of Studies in Economics.

Mr Langford, formerly Chaplain, is now Assistant Priest at Hampstead Parish Church. His successor will be Rev. Christopher Michael Lawson, of New College, Oxford. who will take up his duties in October 1964.

GIFTS TO THE COLLEGE Mr H. Gallienne Lemmon has given ÂŁ2,000 to the College to form the H. Gallienne Lemmon Fund.

Dr Bull has presented eight silver pepper mills for the use of the High Table.

THE APPEAL Support of the appeal continues to be very encouraging. At the time of going to Press, the number of subscribers is 1822 and the total donated, or promised under covenant, is ÂŁ81,468. This is almost exactly two-thirds of the total cost of the Erasmus Building.

The number of covenants and. promised annual donations renewed for a second. period has risen to 265, and 76 other donors have sent a further contribution.

The Governing Body is extremely grateful for this impressive volume of support.

THE LIBRARY We acknowledge with particular gratitude a most generous donation of £80 from the United Clubs. Other benefactions have been received during the year from: The President, Dr Ram­ say, Mr Hart, Mr Kirkaldy, Dr Bowett, Dr Prentis, Mr D. C. Gladwell (1!944), Mr C.J. Cross (1947), Mr G. A. THE FABRIC Although not part of the actual Fabric, Mr Deakin has been identified so closely with it that reference may be made here to the extremely valuable work he did for the College while Junior Bursar. Both old buildings and new show enduring signs of his continuous care and attention.

The past year has been, on the whole, one of consolidation.

Following its poJicy of accommodating as many men in College as possible, the Governing Body has been adapting rooms to bed­ sitters where that could be done conveniently. The cold spell of last year showed us that doors at the entrances to staircases could help to conserve heat, and measures are now being taken.

A sign of the times is the installation on the ground floor of staircase W of a washing machine, spin-drier and ironing board.

First reports indicate that they are popubr with undergraduates.

The expansion of the Governing Body has meant that the existing Combination Room is becoming too small. At the moment of writing, the ground floor of the Old Library is being converted to a second Combination Room joined to the first hy a door which has been inserted skilfully in the panelling. Full E. A. M. details have yet to he settled.

THE VENN PAVILION Dr Venn. in his bequest to the College, left decision on its use to the Governing Body, but made suggestions for consideration.

In particular, he was keen to see a worthy pavilion at the Sports Field, and work on this project has now begun. completion being expected by the end of the summer. The accommodation will also include a groundsman's house.

The building is being financed partly from Dr Venn's estate, thus fulfilling a project that was close to him, and partly by the United Clubs, thus setting their seal on the memory of a widely respected President.

We are grateful to Mr H Gallienne Lemmon (1897) for his generous gift of the clock which will surmount the building, in addition to other gifts to the College which he entered so many years ago.

MR W. J. GORDON The death has occurred at the age of 8 5 of our Groundsman, Mr W. J. Gordon. He held the position for 56 years. and served continuously, apart from leave of absence for service in the Army from 1914 to 1918, for which he was mentioned. in despatches.

Every member of the College who was in residence between 1894 and 195 r remembered Gordon and received from him much wise and kindly advice as well as a friendship which lasted throughout his life.. On his retirement as groundsman at the age of 74, he was presented with a book full ofthe names and signatures of members of the College over the years. The College and its members were always mhis thoughts and mind, and. this happy relationship was second only to a happy home life. Gordon was one of the famous generation of Cambridge groundsmen, highly skilled, highly respected and loved by his colleagues and all with whom he came into contact, and one who did a great deal of good for his College far beyond the call of duty.

The Rowing Year of 1962-3 seems to have amply justified the hopes raised by the previous historic year. Six of the preceding term's May crew returned for another season's rowing, refreshed from a long .rest after their success in the Mays and at Henley.

The Light Four came up a week early for training, the members already having been decided. After two weeks' training, when the Four was beginning to do well, J. H. Maasland sustained an injury to his wrist which put him out of rowing for the rest of the term. B. S. F. Swann took his place and fitted in very well. During the races the Four improved every day, eventually beating Jesus in the Final by 17 seconds.

The Clinkers Four, although containing plenty of rowing talent and racing experience, after an easy first race had a bye the next two days; the result was that in the semi-final on the Friday it hcked fire over the fust part of the course, a£ter which it drew back from 4 seconds down to lose by I½ seconds.

The Fairbairn Ei.ght was made up of what seemed at first sight rather unpromising material, the crew as a whole being light and fairly inexperienced, containing four Freshmen; the Club's more senior oarsmen were engaged with the Light Fours, Clinkers Fours and University Trials. However, thanks to determination in the boat and fiery coaching from the bank during the last two weeks, IO

they rowed hard and rose one place to 17th, catching the boat in front of them.

Ten men were entered for the University Trials, two of whom, M. H. :BeckettandJ. H. Maasland, had to drop out with injuries; but both, with P.J. Webb, gained and well deserved their places in the Blue :Boat. A. Simpson and B. S. F. Swann were awarded Trial Caps and the former rowed in the Goldie Boat the following term.

During the Lent Term, with its well-documented weather conditions, College boating was severely restricted and only one crew put on the water, or ice. After a very few days the Cam froze over and several boats followed the C.U.B.C. to Earith, ten miles away. Here the Q!!eens' Lent boat was seen proceeding down rive.r with a 14 stone May colour coxing and coaching in the stem; very few boats have had the bows so far out of the water while going so slowly. The tidal waters of Earith having frozen, a second migration took place, this time to St Neots, where the cooling waters from a power-station kept the water free of ice.

We then returned to the Cam on the Clayhithe Reach. Instead of the Lent Bumps, a regatta was held on the Long Reach on the 'repechage' system so that, even though ~eens' lost to Jesus on the first day, they raced on the other three days, winning two races and losing two, partly due to illness-one man had the distinction of both coxing and rowing on separate days.

A completely different Eight rowed at Reading and Putney Head of the River Races. Kt Reading we dropped to 45th with an official time of 25 seconds slower than Jesus, who started two places behind yet could not possibly have caught up more than 12 seconds. At Putney three of the crew went down with illness on the Thursday and Friday, and the crew, with two substitutes and a partially sick man, dropped to 61st !

On the same day, three Q_ueens' men, M. H. Beckett, J. H. Maasland and P. J. Webb, were in the crew representing Cambridge in the Boat Race-the greatest number in the Blue Boat at one time-having been coached earlier in the term by Dr A. S. F. Butcher, an old Q!!~' man and Blue.

During the Easter Term we were fortunate in having six May colours from the 1962 Head of the River crew. Three Freshmen II

came in as cox, 2 and 6. The :first part of the term was taken up with selection and the three Blues came in two weeks after the beginning of term; then the jinx of the year struck again and M. H. Beckett went out with a poisoned hand and came back a week later to resume his position at stroke. The last three coaches were the same as in 1962, namely A. I. F. Twinn, S. K. Tubbs and I. Welsh; L. V. Bevan and J. F. H Sergeant took the two earlier periods. By the time the last fortnight came, rowing had reached a difficult period with bad rowing, bad timing and rather low morale. Ian Welsh, thank goodness, worked miracles once again and gave the crew confidence in itself and improved the :rowing b eyond all recognition, even during examinations !

In the races we had the satisfaction of rowing over Head every night and of watching the duel between Jesus and 1st and 3rd Trinity behmd us. Perhaps it was because of this that we did not row at all well on the :first three nights and only gave our best on the Saturday because of the threat from Trinity.

Two weeks later we raced at Marlowe Regatta, after a solid week of May Balls., cocktail parties and a 21st on the Monday!

The first .round of the Grand Challenge Cup was raced against Jesus and London Rowing Club and we won fairly easily, despite bad rowing. In the final we were matched against Walton Rowing Club and Leander (with Morley and Hayler from 1962 Q!!eens' crew). .Being in the middle it seemed as though we were being used as buffers, being hit by Walton and then nearly colliding with Leander. At the finish we did not know whether we had won or had been disqualified. In view of the proximity of Henley Royal Regatta the evening celebrations were more subdued.

At Henley Royal Regatta, again coached by Dr K. A. Williams, we entered for the Thames Cup. In the :first round on Wednesday we raced Jesus' second crew and won easily. On the Thursday we had what was probably our hardest race, against National Provincial Bank, winners of the Thames Cup the previous year.

This race was won by If lengths. Friday saw us racing against

Cornell University Lightweight crew-the American Light­ weight Champions-who evidently expected to win. the event.

By Fawley we were If lengths up when they started to :fight back closing to about I length at the mile post. We won by Ii lengths.

We met London Rowing Club in the semi-final on Saturday morning, and beat them by žlength after a very lazy row.

Argosies were the last crew to fall to us, when we beat them in the final. After a beautiful rhythm for most of the course the crew was itching to let go at the mile post, and stroke gradually raised the rating to 36, finishing in great style at 38, 2f lengths ahead of Argosies.

Our thanks for a successful season's rowing must go to our coaches for their admirable work and the time they have given to producing Q.!!eens' oarsmen. Incidentally here is an afterthought -both the Thames Cup ancl Ladies Plate: perhaps we ought to try something e1se !

G. P. Frankcom, A. R. Pender and P. G. R. Lyon were invited to play for the LX Club against the Oxford Greyhounds. P.A. Kitchin and R. G. Garfield were also awarded LX Club colours.

At the beginning of the season the hopes for the league were high, and the final position ofthird was rather disappointing. Most of the previous year's successful side was in residence and this, together with the advent of some promising Freshmen, made the team enter the league programme with confidence.

We commenced with a comfortable victory over Trinity, followed by a hard-fought game against Jesus, chiefly memorable for three superb penalties kicked by R. A. R. Burton to win 9-8.

We were then beaten by Emmanuel, but regained form to beat St Catharine's II and Trinity Hall, and to draw with St Catha­ rine's I. We ended the season, however, on an appalling note with a dispby against Pembroke which is best forgotten.

During the Christmas vacation the team went on tour to Spain as the guests of Barcelona University. Three games were played, against B.U.C., Barcelona University, and the Combined Spanish Universities. The first two games resulted in comfortable victories., but we lost 8-16 against the Spanish Universities. In perfect conditions, attractive rugby was played throughout to the enjoyment of players and supporters alike. The hospitality throughout the tour was most generous and it was in all respects an excellent holiday.

Because of the weather, no rugger was possible for most of the Lent Term and Coppers was cancelled. A friendly seven-a-side inter-college tournament was arranged,. the team unfortunately being defeated in the quarter-finals.

The bad weather restricted the season to the Michaelmas Term only and our hopes of a long run in Coppers could not be realized.

In the League competition the 1st XI, who had been promoted to Division I the previous season, consolidated that position, finishing in sixth position. Our chief asset was a strong defence, and had our forwards been able to score more goals we might easily have been near to winning the Championship. Our best performance was to defeat Caius, the eventual winners, by 3-0.

We sadly missed the skill of C. R. Pilkington on the wing, but he was kept out of the game all the term through injury.

The 2nd XI, who had been promoted to Division II the year before, were outclassed in most of their matches and were relegated back into Division III. The 3rd XI again finished at the top of Division IV, l!argely due to the enthusiasm and spirit shown by the players.

R. E. J. Chambers played regularly for the Falcons and was in the team which played Oxford Centaurs.

The 1st XI had a reasonably successful term in the League, under the captaincy of M. J. Wilson, losing to Jesus, Trinity and Fitzwilliam, drawing with St Catharines, and winning the other games. This placed the College fourth in the final League table in the First Division. In addition, the Club beat St Bartholomew' s Hospital and Cambridge City, and drew with Mid- Surrey H.C. The combined ~eens'/ Christ's team drew 2-2 with C.U. Wanderers H.C. The 2nd XI had a most satisfactory term; with a side that was well above 2nd team standard, they drew with Jesus and Trinity and won their other games. They also fared well against the duh side that they played.

R B. Gidney (Captain), M. T. F. Read and M. C. Thorpe were selected to play for th.e University against Oxford. M. J. Wilson played regularly for C.U. Wanderers H.C. during the Michaelmas Term.

Two secretaries were appointed. this season for the first time to share the year's work. The arrangement worked well and will be continued.

The record for the season was: played 17; won 3; drawn 6; lost 8. This was not a very impressive performance by a side of cricketers whose personal records for the previous season might have justified a belief that they would he capable of standing firm against many a good side. The cause of failure was two-fold:. the general standard of fielding was low and a very bad support to the howlers, and the wickets for most of the season were slow or treacherous in favour of bowlers, thus reducing our main winning power in our batsmen.

This season most of the regular players were Freshmen; it was a disappointment that many of the Third year cricketers were unable to support us. Thus the side rarely played. with P. G. Hatch, M.J. Wilson and B. B. Gidney,. who in that ordet; were at the top of the batting averages with only 3, 6 and 4 innings respectively (Gidney, however, was in his Fourth year). M.J. B. Wood (234 runs in IO innings) and R. E.J. Chambers (321 runs in 14 innings) were admirably consistent. But this was not quite enough strength in a year which was di4Ji.cult for batsmen.

Of the bowlers, P. W. S. Rowland, D. K. Geddes and C. Kemp worked to a standstill; Geddes took 32 wickets in i:63 overs. But the average of runs to wickets was in all cases high (Geddes 13, Kemp 16, Rowland 27) partly because bowling was for long spells, but more seriously because the support of the fielders was very weak.

However, after a season when things did not go our way,. many people have gained experience and it was a credit to the Captain, P.J. Green, that he found and encouraged a large number of Freshmen cricketers. Full colours were awarded to Wood, Chambers, Kemp and R.J. Maynard so that the team for 1964 should have a hard core of people who have already played at least one year's cricket for the College.

This was a most successful year for the Club in all inter-college competitions. Although we were short of sprinters and throwing­ events athletes throughout the season, the strength of the rest of the team, especially the middle-distance runners, more than compensated.

In the Michaelmas Term we came third in the College Relays competition and second in the College Field Events competition, both considerable improvements on the previous year.

The Coppers competition in the Lent Term, held in appalling conditions, was our best performance. In a close finish in the final we came second behind M agdalene by a margin of only 2 points.

Several College athletes did well to represent the University in the Oxford match in May. ThesewereJ. A. :B. Tolson,D.J. Reid, D. M. Turner and A. J. Maxwell, all of whom went on to represent a combined Oxford-Cambridge team against Harvard and Yale.

The cross-country section of the club had another very suc­ cessful year,. retaining the trophies for the Selwyn and Hyde Park Road relays, won the previous year. At the end of the Michael­ mas Term they also triumphed in the Coppers competition with a most decisive win. Three runners-D. M. Turner, A. J. Maxwell and K. I. Evans-ran in the University team against Oxford.

The Tennis Club had a very successful season. The first team, scoring 82 points out of a possible 90, became League Champions, though only after a close struggle with Jesus, who scored a total of 79.

In Cuppers, the team was strengthened by J. I. Tattersall. the University Captain, but, after beating Selwyn in the first round, we lost 6-3 to the eventual winners, Downing. With a more favourable draw this would have been the final, for it is most unlikely that any other team would have beaten �eens'.

J. I. Tattersall is to be congratulated on winning his third Blue.

At the conclusion of the season colours were awarded to A. C. Nacht and B. R. Wood, and reawarded to L. B. Barham, J. I. Tattersall, N. W. Browne, R. J. Hinchcliffe, P. W. Howard.

The activities of the College Rugby fives Club 1.ast year were unhappily restricted because of the small number of members.

The Captain, D.R. W. Hares, played for the University and P. Mawby the Secretary and Treasurer was a strong candidate for a place, playing for the 'Sparrows'. The Club was unable to find a team for the Coppers and election of officers for the next year was postponed.

In the Michaelmas Term, there was the usual confusion at the beginning of the year; freshmen were particularly slow in coming forward. The third team took advantage of having rather better players than it deserved and moved up to Division Vat the end of term, to be in the same division as the second team. The third team's spectacular rise continued in the Lent Term, until it met the second. team, which it beat 4-r. Thereafter drastic steps had to be taken to pacify the officials of the League. The end result, however, was very satisfactory, in that the third team ended well up in their new division and the second team were promoted.

The :first team had a slow start but, once Tattersall had been persuaded to abandon tennis for the winter, thin gs looked up.

The team finally won the Second Division and gamed promotion at the end of the Lent Term.

In Coppers, �eens' beat St Catharine's and Churchill,. 3-2 on both occasions, neither being to �eens' credit. However, in the third round we lost to a strong Clare side 3-2, J. Ware and M. R. Sadley both losing their fifth games ro-8: this was considerably better than anticipated.

Our social matches are now limited to Ipswich and the Imperial College, London.

This year has been an·extremely successful one for the Club, both in University and in College competitions. The Captain, C. P. Kimbell, was awarded his University small-bore colours as a result of his 'possible' in the match against Oxford, won with a record score of 792/800, and the Secretary, T. A. Shippey, also shot for the University, in the successful small-bore pistol match at Oxford.

The main College competition was the London Scottish 'Falling Plates' for Service rifles, for which four teams were entered. The 'C' and 'D' teams lost quickly, although J. A. Goodwin and C. Bowker earned the biggest cheer of the match by tripping-up simultaneously during the run-up.

The 'A' team, however, consisting of C. P. Kimbell, T. A. Shippey, P. J. Skolar, R. D. Jones, disposed of several teams in quick times, until they were narrowly beaten by Emmanuel in the quarter-final. At this point the 'B' team, M. V. Phythian­ Adams, R. K. Towers, A. M. Bell and G. R. E. Pope, showed a remarkable improvement, beating Emmanuel in the next round with some very rapid shooting, and going on to the final. only to lose to a strong and fast St Catharine's team.

It is hoped that the Club will once again be able to enter strong teams the London Scottish Cup, and in the small-bore and revolver inter-college competitions.

Twenty-four evening matches were played this se.ason, and eighteen members of the College participated. The first Cuppers team lost to Trinity and King's, thereby just failing to qualify for the final round of the Cuppers tournament. The second team won half its matches, also failing to qualify for the final round of Cuppers. The College played in the First Division of the Cam­ bridge and District Chess Le.ague, :finishing 8th.

War on Want lunches for chess players were organized by the President and proved successful as opportunities for practice and as social occasions.

The Club had another successful year. Six t ams were entered in the League. All the other teams were high in their divisions, the fifth team being promoted from the Fifth Division.

The Club also had a good run in Cuppers. The team of N. W. Browne,]. L Tattersall, G. C. Chinchen and R.J. Hinchcliffe beat Trinity Hall, Downing and St John's on their way to the final where they were beaten 4-5 by Christ's.

The College ran two teams in the inter-League competition. The

first team finished half-way up the First Division, while the second team was relegated from the Second Division. It must be pointed out, though, that most of the second-team matches were against the first teams of other colleges.

In Coppers the College was knocked out in the quarter-finals by the eventual winners, Trinity.

The College had a representative, G. R. Woolhouse, in the University team and this year he is Captain of the University.

He also retained the open singles title.

In conclusion the Club would like to thank D. Winchester for his enthusiasm and support over the last three years.

The 1962-3 season saw the College well represented in the University sides. P. R.Johnston captained Cambridge in a successful varsity match and distinguished himself in University and National tournaments alike. A. B. Bevan-Jones played regularly for the Stymies and occasionally in the Blues side.

The St Bernard Society had a :flourishing year, both the debates and the discussions being generally well attended. The House decided, amongst other things, that 'The Affluent Society is to be Regretted', 'Charity is more Important than Chastity', and 'Cambridge Education is out of Touch with Reality' and rejected the motions 'The Pope is a Greater Barrier to World Progress than Mr Kruschev', 'Scientists should be on Tap, not on Top' and 'This House would not welcome the return of a Labour Government at the General Election'. This last motion was decisively rejected, and it seems that most members of the College urgently long for a Labour Government in Brita.in today.

Among many discussions, 'Germany-a Military Democracy' led by John Samuels, 'Mass Communications' led by Mr P. Abrams, 'Crime and Punishment in a Modern Society' led by Dr J.P. Martin and 'Public Schools in the State System' led by Mr Ronald Groves, were perhaps the most successful.

The Society can flourish only if people are willing not only to attend debates, but also to participate in them. This they did during last year, and the Society appeared rejuvenated. It is to be hoped this trend will continue.

ST MARGARET SOCIETY

STAMP Regular Chamber Concerts were held throughout the year on Sunday evenings, with items ranging from small-scale orchestral works to piano recitals. Regular organ recitals continued to be given in the College Chapel.

At the end of both the Lent and the Michaelmas Terms, a Chamber Concert under the organization of R. L Thompson was given in Chapel. The May Week Concert this year, held in College Hall, was in a lighter vein and included a full performance of Trial by Jury and also the first performance of A. R. le Fleming's Burlesque No. 2. May Week also saw the very successful reintroduction of a Chamber Concert held in Walnut Tree Court; this was also organized by R. I. Thompson.

The biggest venture of the year was the large-scale Choral and Orchestral Concert given during February in Great St Mary's Church and also in Royston Parish Church under the direction of A. R. le Fleming. For this performance, which included Britten's Rejoice in the Lamb and Mozart's Requiem Mass, the Society joined forces with the Musical Society of Sidney Sussex College, and professional soloists were employed.

The year has been very successful, perhaps the most encouraging feature being that the Society has provided for members of the College the opportunity to participate in, or just enjoy listening to, an immense range of musical experience, from solo work in intimate surroundings to full-scale choral and orchestral concerts.

Fortune has again attended 'The Bats', right from the end of the Michaelmas Term. Stephen Gray produced a Freshmen cast in AnnJellicoe's The Sport ef My Mad Mother-'a tough primitive

experiment in sound and violence'. It was well received by its audiences.

In the Lent Term, David Lewis ancl John Cassells conspired to originate their second revue, which, suitably enough, was entitled Flip-Side. It was competently produced by Jim Beach. Richard Smith and Phil Norris gave particularly confident performances.

As usual the highlight of the year was the Cloister Court production; this year All's Well That E11ds Well was produced by David Barber assisted by Andrew Boyd. Nick Bury and Jonathan Mitchell designed and constructed a tasteful set, well suited to the actors, and the music was composed by Anthony le Fleming.

David Gooderson shone as Parolles, and was well supported by the rest of the cast. The show was a very satisfactory venture in all respects.

As is now customary, Frank Bechhofer took a company to the Minack Theatre in Cornwall to play A Midsummer Night's Dream. The venture encountered foul weather in the open-air theatre, but established during its week's run record audiences for the theatre; the production was greatly enjoyed by all concerned.

Since the Club was recognized in 1961 it has always been short of experienced helmsmen and last year there were so few members that the College was unable to raise a team for Cuppers. However, this year we were fortunate to have three more experienced sailors join the Club, and now that he has stopped rowing, Martin Beckett has also offered his services. With this increased membership we were able to raise a team and beat Caius College earlier this tenn. It is hoped that further matches can be arranged for next term so that our hdmsmen can gain as much experience as possible before Cuppers.

In the first year of its formation the ~eens' College basketball team acquitted itself well. Although. competition was not heavy, the team did well to finish second in the inter-College League in the Michaelmas Term. In the Lent Term the team did even better and we:re runners-up to Trinity College in the inter-college Cuppers. In the final, after a disastrous first few minutes, when Q!!eens' lost a quick 12 points, the game remained even until the end; the early 12 point deficit, though slightly reduced, could not be fully made up.

DINNER IN THE NORTH-W EST The thirteenth Annual Dinner for Q...ueens' men in the NorthW est was held on s April 1963, at the Lancashire Cricket Club, Old Trafford, Manchester. Thirty-three members were present, the Guest of Honour being the Praelector, Mr Geoffrey Wilson.

The Bishop of Blackburn presided.

The next Dinner will take place on IO April 1964, in Liverpool, when it is hoped that the Guest of Honour will be Dr M. M. Bull, the Senior Tutor.

The Annual Meeting was held on Saturday, r5June. The Treasurer reported that rr8 new members had joined the Club during the year. There had been a net loss of about £82, leaving a debit balance of £4. 3s. 7d., mainly on account of increased printing costs. It was agreed to raise the Life Membership subscription from 2 guineas to 3 guineas.

The President referred to the success of the Appeal Fund, which had been kept open on the advice of the Graduates Club at their previous Annual Meeting.

About 170 members were present at the Dinner. The Club was proposed by Sir Harry Townend and Professor Kirkaldy replied.

The College was proposed by Professor Trevaskis and the President replied.
