THE SOCIETY Professor Kirkaldy has been appointed Deputy Chairman of the National Incomes Commission.. He has resigned his Professorship from the end of the academical year, but will remain a Fellow of the Colleg e and College Lecturer in Industrial Relations.

Congratulations are due to Dr Sugden on the award of the degr,ee of Sc.D.; also to Mr Radley on th.e award of the degree of Ph.D. Mr Parmee is on leave of absence for the Lent Term, 1963, and Dr Baldwin is Acting Steward for the period.

Dr Beament has succeeded. Dr Cohen, also on leave of absence, as Tutor for Research Students. He has been awarded the Scientific Medal of the Zoological Society of London.

Among former Fellows, Dr Chadwick has added to his Honorary Fellowship at Q!!eens' an Honorary Fellowship at 2

Magdalene College, where he was formerly Music Scholar; and Dr Haszeldine has been awarded the Corday-Mo rgan Medal and Prize, in respect of the year 196o, for outstanding contributions to the chemistry of fluorine.

Two Research Fellows have now left us: Dr Bossy for Goldsmiths' College, and. Dr Rowell for Makerere University College, Kampala, Uganda.

Sir Reader Bullard, one of our best known Q!!eens' men, has been elected to an Honorary Fellowship.

The Most Reverend T. Hannay (1907) has resigned as Bishop of Argyll and the Isles and Primus of the Episcopal Church m Scotland. He is now living at Mirfield.

Two elections have been made to Official Fellowships: Dr Prentis, University Lecturer in Engineering and an M.A. of the College since 1958; and. Mr Hughes, University Lecturer in Geology and formerly Scholar of the College.

Three Research Fellows have also been elected: Mr Roper, from Jesus College, in English; Mr Alty, formerly Scholar in Engineering; and. Mr Kingston, formerly Scholar in Natural Sciences.

Mr J.M. Riley (1950) has presented a silver rose bowl to commemorate the residence of his grandfather, J. Riley (1861-5)matriculation 100 years ago-his father, L. Riley (1899-1902) and himself (1950-3).

THE APPEAL The Governing Body is extremely grateful for the generous response ofQ!!eens' men to the Appeal launched in connection with the Erasmus Building. By the end of February 1963 a total of 1786 subscribers had donated, or promised under covenant, the sum of £75,123. This is made up of £59,355 from covenants, £3 302 from annual donations and£ 12,466 from single donations.

A particularly gratifying feature is the response which has followed the renewal of the Appeal following the 1962 Annual Meeting of the Club, when members warmly urged the Govern­ ing Body to keep the Appeal in being. So far, ro7 covenants and 5 annual donations have been renewed to follow the first seven years, and 47 of the 'single' donors have sent a further donation.

The College faces a difficult period of development as many urgent needs continue to press, but the Governing Body is deriving real strength from the knowledge that it is being supported so magnificently hy so many loyal members.

THE LIBRARY Generous gifts of books have been received from Mr De.akin, from the Rev. J. f. Williams (1897), and also in memory of the late J. A. Reeves (1959).

THE FABRIC Last year's account of the Fabric closed with a refer.ence to severe weather and burst pipes. This winter the weather has been more severe, and that for much longer. On many days skating on the Cam in bright sunshine has been possible, and a highway was almost established on the river to King's and beyond. The prevailing extreme cold has forced us to keep at least three maintenance men employed full time for more than four weeks on prevention and cure of frozen pipes. We have avoided the worst oflast year's trouble, but the cost of this has been heavy, quite apart from professional plumbers' bills.

In recent years the Roundabout has been invaded by many car owners who have had no connection with the College, and it has been necessary to restrict parking there to those who have been given parking labels; but of course the senior porters know Old Members; when visiting the College, the convenient thing is to call at the Porter's Lodge and the Porter will direct Members where to park.

The timbers supporting the floor of the Upper Fitzpatrick Hall were probably not meant for dancing or violent dramatics; they have had to be propped up on occasion by tubular steel pillars.

These are no longer necessary, the oak beams now being assisted by steel girders below. Another problem has appeared in connection with the beams which support the 1450 Library. For perhaps 150 years they have been encased in pine boxing and supported by cast-iron pillars. The latter restrict the use of the room bdow the Library, so the boxes have been examined to find what they hide. Inside were the original oak beams, some in fair order though not strong enough unaided to support the huge bookshelves above. All the beams have been attacked by death watch, furniture and other beetles and are now being thoroughly treated against further damage. They are being strengthened in various ways and we now intend to complete the ceiling of this room in a manner similar l:o that of the Erasmus Room and of the Combination Room.

The :fine oak staircase of the Essex :Building has been restored and all the pictures in the Hall have been regilt.

The year 1961-2 is probably the most memorable in the history of the Boat Clu.b. Six May colours remained. from the Eight which had reached the semi-finals of the Ladies Plate at Henley Royal Regatta the previous July, so there was a group of oarsmen with some racing experience at the top of the Club.

The start to the year was disappointing. Owing to illness the Light Four was not really fit for the races, but the loss to Jesus B in the first round was mainly owing to a strained steering cable.

The Fairbairn Eight was filled with good material and was not broken up to take people for the University Trials. The technique of this Eight was good, thanks to the sound coaching of P. Maasland, but in the Fairbairn Cup Race they rowed prettily and without much determination, and went up only one place, to 18th.

In the University Trials, three 0ÂŁeens' men were awarded Trial Caps (Walmsley, Webb and Morley) and A. Maasland was given a Junior Trial Cap. Walmsley went on to cox the Blue Boat and Webb to row for Goldie.

Two Lent boats started training a week before Term began.

A great trouble was to find a stroke for the 1st Lent Boat, and I. N. McCallum was finally chosen. This term marked a rise in

racing spirit, and morale soared when the crew beat Jesus (Head of the River in the Lents) in a race up the Long R_each. The crew benefited much from the savage coaching of Chris Henderson, and 'Bill' Williams managed to smooth the crew out in the last two weeks' training.

On the first night ofthe Lents we caught Emmanuel at Morley's Holt after Emmanuel had just missed 1st and 3rd Trinity. The second night the crew went off at 43, never dropped below 40 and bwnped 1st and 3rd Trinity by rst post comer-a magnificent row. On the last two nights the crew raced well but did not make any real impression on L.M.B.C. QEeens' are now 3rd on the River in the Lents, and this is the fust time we have attained this position.

The Lent crew was strengthened by the addition of Morley and Hayter for the Head of the River at Reading and Putney. The average weight was now 13.2 and the crew did not row well above 33. Nevertheless, QEeens' returned the fastest time of all Oxford and Cambridge Colleges, going up 8 places from 17th to 9th. At the Putney Head of the River the crew again lacked. control at ratings above 33 and did not fare well in the strong East wind. They started and finished. 15th.

Two trial Eights were started in preparation for the Mays a week before the Easter Term began. The coaches L. V. Bevan and J. F. H Sergeant helped greatly in the selection of the 1st May Boat.. A. F. S. Butcher then took over coaching-his mild manner is deceptively effective and under him the technique of the provisional Eight, now formed, improved.

The lack of a stroke was very worrying and in the end Webb was chosen. Alf Twinn, the University Boatman, coached for the next fortnight. His methods, although laboriously repetitive, began to get the crew working together.Webb was given a rest from stroking and M. H. Beckett took the job on. During this fortnight the crew was entered for the new event 'Head of the Cam' which was run between the Gym sheds and the Chesterton footbridge. We finished 2nd havmg started 3rd, and of the Colleges that had entered we proved to be the fastest by one second. Beckett by now had established himself as a very good stroke and so was kept in this position.

S. K. Tubbs, an ex-president of the C.U.B.C., took over coaching and proved to be very helpful. His aim was to get us to row a one piece stroke, and to a large extent he achieved this.

Our finishing coach was J. W. Welsh, who performed the job supe.rbly both on and off the River ! Training was now a matter of short pieces of rowing at high pressure.

On the Wednesday of the Mays we set out determined to be revenged on St Catharine's who had bumped us the previous year; we bumped them just before the Ditton Plough. The next two nights we bumped rst and 3rd Trinity and L.M.B.C., who had been bumped offHead of the River byJesus on the Wednesday.

On Saturday we went down to the start with the full support of the spectators. We caught Jesus just before the Railings to go Head of the River with such a bump that the Jesus stroke was forced to leave the boat.

We were invited to race on the Bosbaan at Amsterdam by Nereus on the week-end after the Mays. We accepted and with only two practice outings set out to beat Molsey and Mulhiem Ruhr. We started the 2,000 metre course at 44 and settled at 40; to our surprise we were leading at the r,250 metres mark, but by then the previous week's celebrations were having their effect and we lost by 2 lengths. On the next day we were drawn against Keble College, Oxford and rowed badly to lose by two-thirds of a length.

At Henley Royal Regatta we entered for the Ladies Plate and drew Keble again in the first round .. This time there were to be no mistakes. By the Barrier we were three-quarters of a length up (time 1.56, equals record), byFawleywe led by onelengthand our lead stayed at that to the finish in 6.53.

The next day we beat Trinity College, Dublin, by one and three­ quarter lengths in 6.51 and on Friday we beat Jesus again by one and three-quarter lengths in 6.58.

In the finals we beat rst and 3rd Trinity in a hard race by two lengths in 6.54. This is the second time that Q_ueens' have won the Ladies Plate.

Seven of the Henley crew remain for next year and so the prospects for the future must surely look bright.

The Michaelmas League programme began badly with three of the first four matches lost. Experience in unaccustomed positions was being gained, however,. and the second half of the Term saw five resounding victories, in which almost a hundred points were scored. The ten league points thus gained resulted in ~ens' being second in the First Division.

The Lent Cuppers' Team was virtually the league side, plus Frankcom, who gained a Blue in the Centre the term before.

An easy draw managed to see the team somewhat shakily to the final. We beat Downing 16-13 in a tough slog in the mud; a weak Selwyn side just missed scraping home in an 8-6 fiasco and a strong St John's team were defeated by a combination of the boot of Burton and prolonged assaults on their apparently impregnable line.

The finals saw Q!!eens' confronted by a watered-down Varsity side in the form ofChrist's. A splendid first half resulted in a change over at 3-0 in Christ's favour; however, in the latter stages of the second half. sheer weight, speed, fitness and skill took their toll and Galbraith, the Christ's right wing, raced over for three tries which were converted.

A highly successful season was enjoyed by the dub, with two new fixture&-against the Old Aloysians and Leicester University 2nd XI-supplementing the usual fixtures.

In the league, all three teams gained promotion, with no side suffermg defeat on any occasion. In all, the 1st XI won 9 games, conceding no points and only 3 goals. The 2nd XI won 6 and drew 3, and the 3rd XI won 7 and drew 2. A unique achievďż˝ ment!

In Cuppers, we were unfortunate enough to draw Christ's in the second round and lost 3-0 in a hard-fought contest, our side being reduced to ten men within five minutes of the kick-off.

At the end of the Michaelmas term, thirteen members of,the dub went on a four'...match tour of the Channel Islands, which proved highly successful and worth repeating. fudividually, P. T. The College Hockey Club managed. to entice 37 full-time members, and therefore decided to run three sides. However, as five members were playing regularly for the University, and M. J. Wilson also played occasionally,. numbers were cut to 14

such an extent that the 3rd. XI showed unusual but unlawful skill with their feet-anyhow we thank them for their help.

Thus the League side rst Division was having to cater for the absence of five and sometimes six-neverthele ss under A. P. Conway's guidance we collected 8 points to lie 6th in the table.

The 2nd League side, playing in the 2nd Division of the rst League, had a hard time but managed 3 points from their games; unfortunately they were beaten by Christ's II in a play-ofÂŁ However, this situation no longer stands, following the entrance of Churchill into the competition.

In the Cuppers we faced the same situation as the year beforea good side, but, without the time to practise, not as good a team as we should have been. We played 4-2-3-1 formation and eventually lost in the semi-finals to Downing. Downing . beat us 2-1 after extra time and eventually won the cup.

The 2nd Cuppers side swept all very firmly in front of them, winning the final 5-0. This was a very competent and hardworking performance from all concerned.

During the Easter Vacation we sent one side under J. R. Brock to Denmark, where they put up an excellent performance on and off the pitch. We sent the other side to the Folkestone Festival.

Here, against some good sides, we did not lose.

The officers of the Club were necessarily changed at the start of the season owing to the illness ofD. S. Bousfield and the impending marriage of P. G. Hatch. D. Stratford deputised as Captain for most of the season, and P.J. Green was elected Secretary.

There was no committee member. As a result this placed a heavy burden of administration and organisation on two people, and. s two secretaries instead of it was decided that in the 1963 seaon one should help to carry the load.

The record for the season was: played 16, won 9, lost 3. This was an impressive performance on wickets favouring the batsman, and the general policy of aiming for a result from the start of each game paid off handsomely.

The strength of the side lay in its all-ronnd ability. M. J. Wilson,. P. J. Green, P. B. Hay and R. J. Rose all scored over 200 runs, while a further four players scored over I 50 each, giving a considerable depth to the batting. The varied and testing attack of the five main bowlers, P. W. S. Rowland, D. K. Geddes, R. Todd, J. M. Davis and M. Etheridge, was very effective, and P. W. S. Rowland, taking 28 wickets at an average of 15¡46, led the assault.

By contrast, the second XI rarely appeared on the field. There was disappointing support from the freshmen, only :five of whom felt able to play.

Once again the Athletic Club lacked strength in depth and too much reliance was placed on too few members of the Club.

As a result the Club only just managed to avoid relegation from Division 1 in the inter-college relays and field events. But with some outside assistance we managed to reach the final of Cuppers, thou$h here the absence of the distance section of the Club16

caused. by an unfortunate fixture dash-doomed us to third place despite excellent performances by several members.

The club was again well represented in the Varsity Match, with four members of the University team-C. T. Simey, S. A.. Fairbank. D. M. Turner, and J. A. B.. Tolson. All these, except the latter, also represented the joint Oxford-Cambridge Team against Cornell-Pennsylvania at the White City inJune and all won their events-Mike Turner breaking the two mile record for the series in the process.

The future of the Club can never be secure without more fulltime athletes. The present situation with a hard core of serious athletes helped out by willing part-timers is most unhealthy and prevents us from producing the team that we are really capable of having.

The College had a successful season. In spite of the loss of three oflast year's players, the first team was a force to be reckonecl with.

They ÂŁDished third. in the First Division of the League, behind Trinity and Clare, although beating Clare 8-7. The second team were undefeated in their Division, and gamed. promotion to the Fourth Division of the League with the huge total of 74 points, their nearest rivals being Downing II with 62 points.

The Cuppers team narrowly beat a strong Clare side 5-4 in the first round and subsequently proceeded to reach the final without undue diliiculty. The opponents in the final, Trinity, were tipped for a convincing victory. However, in spite of being 4-2 down after the singles, the College won two of the doubles and :in the deciding doubles the Captain and Secretary were just beaten 6-4 in the third set. The year 1961-2 has shown a gradual increase in interest and enthusiasm for swimming in general and water polo in particular.

Entry into the 1962 Water Polo Cuppers was prevented. at the last minute by injuries, but many of those in residence in 1961-2 will be available in 1962-3, with, it is hoped, a fund of experience.

The Club has also purchased a water polo ball which it hopes to use to good advantage.

The Club has been able to cater for one or two people who have been unable to swim at all, giving basic instruction, usually in the crawl stroke. With regard to competitive swimming, little is done other than at University level, but it is hoped that more inter-college events will take place in the future.

In October, ~eens' I team started in the second Division of the League. With J. H Harris playing for the University, the regular team was J. R. Brock, J. Ware, P. Hatch, R. Sadler and A.J. P. Christie. The team had considerable success and finished 2nd in the League. This entailed promotion in January, but we failed to fulfil the promise ofthe preceding term, and consequently returned to the Second Division at the end of that term.

J. H. Harris played off and on for the University and finally played against Oxford at No. 4, where he unfortunately lost his match. J. R. Brock was committed to Hockey until February, but thereafter he became a Gander.

The social matches against Ipswich, Guy's Hospital and The Imperial College were a great success, and Q!!eens' came away with a fair share of the honours.

The 2nd and. 3rd teams maintained their positions in the Fifth and Sixth Divisions respectively. While this is not particulady exalted, the large number of players is very encouraging and the competition arising from this gives us high hope for the future.

The only occasion on which the Rifle Club forms a College team is in the London Scottish Falling Plate competition, shot last term. Under the Captaincy of A. D. W. Abbot-Anderson, ~eens' stood a good chance of winning.

Teams of four race from 300 feet to 200 feet range and fire at ten I foot square plates, the winning team being the first of the two teams firing to do this. ~eens' set up a very fast time in the preliminary rounds but were just beaten by Clare in the third round. Clare went on to win, beating Q.!!eens' record time by half a second.

Individually, A. D. W. Abbot-Anderson shot against Oxford in the Chancellor's plate full-bore riffe match, while C. P. Kimbell and T. A. Shippey shot regularly in inter-university small-bore league teams.

The Chess Club had a relatively good season. In the Michaelmas Term both fust and second Coppers teams succeeded in qualifying for the finals the following term. In these the first team had a difficult time, winning only one and drawing two of the five matches played. In many cases, however, all the games were very closely fought. The second team fared rather better, winning three and losing two games. This probably gave them second place, but in the Second Team Coppers such mundane things as positions are of little importance. The Cambridge and District League team, having achieved promotion the previous season, only just succeeded in remaining in the First Division, winning four and drawing one out of eleven matches.

Two individual performances were noteworthy: P. J. Meade once again played consistently well on board one, his only 20

defeats being at the hands of Wells of Trinity Hall, who was beating everyone, including the World Champion, at the time, and Treasa of King's, an Italian master. He was the only �eens' representative in the University match against Oxford, where he drew. The other player to whom unqualified praise must be given is A.G. Summers, a freshman who soon showed his quality and lost only one game for �eens' throughout the season, also winning for the University Dragons (2nd team) against the Oxford Unicorns. The results of the rest of the team, and especially those of the secretary, were less happy-in all, of 140 games played in matches, 59 were won, 59 lost, 20 drawn and in 2 agreement between the players was never reached.

Despite the fact that the fust team was unable to retain the League Championship, the Club enjoyed another successful season, three of the six teams gaining promotion. Benefiting from the services of the old Half Blue R. J. Stephens, the dub reached the final of Coppers where, as in the previous year, the Fitzwilliam House team proved a little too strong.

The first team fin:shed third in Division I, very close behind St Catharine's and Sidney Sussex. N. l K. Clark, playing at No. I in the League, showed convincing form throughout the season. The second team did well to maintain its position in Division I, and the third team failed only narrowly to gain promotion from Division II. �eens' remains the only College to have three teams in the fust two divisions. The fourth, fifth and sixth teams gained promotion from Divisions IV, VI, and VII, respectively.

The high standard achieved by all the College teams pays tribute to the many members of the Club, whose enthusiasm left little to be desired.. In his year as Captain N. l K. Clark 2I

As a result of the previous successful season, when both teams were promoted, the 1st VI was in the First Division and 2nd VI was in the Second Division. This meant th.at the opposition would be stiffer, especially for the 2nd team which, being the only 2nd team :in the division, would have 1st team opponents. Much therefore depended. on the freshmen and in this respect we were fortunate in quality rather than quantity, and two gained University Trials. G. Woolhouse, after winning the open tournament, went on to be 1st string in the University side, where he gained a Half Blue and ultimately was elected University secretary.

However, the strength of a side depends on all its members, and the 1st team played very well to finish in the top halfofthe division~ The 2nd team by virtue of two victories over full College sides avoided relegation, and gained considerable experience of a higher standard of Badminton. In the Cuppers competition, St Catharine's were disposed of in the 1st round, but then unfortunately the opponents were Pembroke, the League champions. The match was lost 2- I, and Pembroke went on to win the tournament. In addition to the League matches, a social team was organised and played several very enjoyable games. The season culminated in the Cross and Crozier Club Dinner with the Table Tennis Club.

P. R.Johnston and T. C.H. Sale dominated University competitions. In the Welch Cup, playing as Q!!eens' first pair, they beat Trinity at the 21st after some very fine galÂŁ The final of the Carr Cup was another thrilling match, played in very cold and windy conditions; P. R.Johnston beat T. C.H. Sale by one hole after being two down with three to play. P. R. Johnston won the Luskill Cup, the Dnnedin Cup and the Storey Medal.

P. R.Johnston and T. C. R Sale both won their singles in the match against Oxford University atHunstanton. After the match, P.R. Jolmston was elected Captain of the C.U.G.C. for 1962-3.

The College side won most of its fixtures against other colleges. The match with St Ives had to be cancelled because of snow, but rain did not prevent the match at Royston, which was lost.

The Society is recognised as one of the most active College debating societies and has tried to preserve this status.

In the earlier part of the year, under the Presidency of W. J. Church, the society held eight meetings. Among the more memorable of the debates were 'The Ever-Presence of the Welfare State is sapping the vitality of the Nation' and 'Society should not safeguard the Morals of th.e Individual'. Dr Bowett was among the speakers in the former debate.

Among the discussions a 'Symposium on Modem Poetry', led by the editors of Granta, was greatly appreciated. The Society 23

was also honoured by the visit of Dr Joseph Needham who spoke on 'Science and Mysticism in Chinese Thought'.

A vigorous programme was drafted for the Michaelmas Term by the new President, A. Singh. It included a special visit by the Oxford Union Society led by their Librarian, a discussion on Mixed Marriages led by a Sociologist and a Geneticist, and a Symposium on Writing for the Stage, Screen and Radio to which were invited a panel of undergraduate writers and Sir Basil Bartlett, Author and Script Supervisor of the B.B.C. Other meetings included debates on the motions 'Liberalism in Britain Today is a Protest not a Policy', and 'The Pope presents a Greater Barrier to World Progress than Mr Krushchev'. A discussion that aroused considerable interest was on 'Mass Communications- the New Science', led by Mr Philip Abrams, as also did the one on 'Germany-A military Democracy', led by the Chairman of C.U.U.N.A. The Society also organised an external debate in Hertfordshire. A special arrangement was made whereby members of the United. Nations Organisation were allowed, in restricted numbers, to attend some of the discussions.

The presiding genius of the Society during the last academic year was David Macdonald, whose reign as conductor of the chorus culminated in his performance of Handel's Messiah during the Lent Term. Throughout his term of office he was strongly su~ ported by the organ scholar, R. I. Thompson, a capable body of singers and a small but talented group of instrumentalists.

On Tuesday, 5 December, following the traditional Freshmen's Concert, David Macdonald conducted the St Margaret: Chorus in a Concert of Church music. The chorus performed Brahms's

How lovely are thy Dwellings, Purcell's Rejoice in the Lord Alway, and Handel's Zadok the Priest. Directed. by Ian Thompson, the St Margaret Singers performed Tallis's If Ye Love me, and Byrd's Ave Verum Corpus. The concert was completed by two organ solos and a performance of Beethoven's String Q_uartet, Op. r8, no. 3. During the term Simon Preston, Ian Thompson and Antony le Fleming gave organ recitals.

Memories of the Lent Term tend to be dominated musically by the Messiah. In fact, it also saw the presentation oftwo chamber concerts, the second of which was given, nnder the direction of Ian Thompson, on Snncky, II March. For this concert the society enlisted the assistance ofDavid Munrow the bassoonist and recorder player from Pembroke. Robert Hobson was the soloist in the first movement of Mozart's Clarinet Q_uintet.

The Bats have again had a very successful year. At the end of the Michaelmas Term, Anthony Staveacre produced The Brass Butterfly, .by Wilham Golding, with a cast consisting largely of freshmen. A gentle comedy on the theme of 'progress', set in the Roman Empire 'sometime in the third century A.D.', it was very well received.

In the Lent Term, David Lewis and John Cassels produced an original revue entitled Prodigal on the theme of a g:racluate leaving Cambridge and, unable to :find his niche in the outside world, :finally returning there. The material was very good, and David Gooderson, David Hatch, and Ted Pater gave particularly good performances. A Bats dinner during this term was very well attended; the guests were Dr Chadwick, Dr Rowell, Mr Spearing and Anthony Adidge, the past President of the Bats.

The highlight of the year was the Cloister Court production of Twelfth Night, produced by David Gooderson assisted by Stephen Gray. Jonathan Mitchell and Brian Shearing had built a replica of a foll Shakespearean stage, complete with apron, towers and balcony, around the Oriel window of the Lodge. The production did justice to this magnificent setting, and Brian Derbysbire as Malvolio, Judy Christmas as Viola,, and Anthony Staveacre as Sir Toby were outstanding in a strong cast. The show was a great success, and ,dreďż˝ a record audience.

In the Long Vacation, Frank Bechhofer once again took a company (as the Cambridge University Players) to the Minack Theatre in Cornwall, where we performed As You Like It and had an extremely successfol and enjoyable week's run.

MALLETS CLUB Master of the O!f.eens' Mallets:

~eens' Mallets exists to provide members with. the opportunity for playing croquet in College. No inter-college matches were arranged last year but the equipment was in almost continuous use, weather permitting, until the season was closed by the ceremonial 'burning of the boat' over the site of the second hoop.

The extensive use of this facility has, I think, amply justified the College's purchase of some expensive mallets and balls, which allow a good standard of croquet-the roughness of the lawn adds an interesting indeterminacy.

No elections were necessary for the 1961-2 season as the Captain, N.W. Browne, was still in residence. This was perhaps fortunate as no interest had been shown in the sport by the first and second years during the previous season. For the third year running no freshmen with any lacrosse experience were forthcoming and this made a competent side very difficult to raise. In fact the brief fixture list of the previous season was repeated. There were two fixtures of a semi-social nature, both against Homerton. It was surprising, with the lack of experience, that the second match was in fact won by I I goals to 9, although it may be said that ten of the goals were scored by the Captain and a 'guest' from Christ's. It is, however, the first time that Homerton have been beaten in the past few years.

It is a pity that a College with such an excellent record of Lacrosse :Blues in recent years should be unable to raise a competent side for College Cuppers, which is, after all, only 6-a-side. The note of the season can only be one of hope of a better season next year.

BROWNE

CROSS-COUNTRY RUNNING was another very successful season for the Club. We retained our position as the top Oxford and Cambridge distance running college. This success was due to the leadership of our Captain, David Macdonald, to our stars Mike Turner and Alan.

Fairbank, and to a strong and consistent pack.

We again won the inter-College league competition, winning each of our four triangular matches. Cuppers proved a disappointment, with most of the team running a little below form.

Despite brilliant runs by Turner and Fairbank we finished second, behind St John's but still far ahead of all the other colleges.

Road Relays were once more the club's speciality. In November we won the Selwyn College Relay (4 x 2½ miles) comfortably by halfa minute. In the Lent term we visited Oxford and won the St Edmwid Hall Relay (6 x 2 miles) by a minute and a quarter.

The Hyde Park Relay (6 x 3 miles) provided stiffer opposition and we finished tenth behind the leading University teams but still retained the 'Union' cup given to the best College team.

A new venture was the Mitcham to Reading Relay, in which after eight legs filled with much adventure we completed the 42 miles to Reading second to Nottingham University. The team in these relays was Macdonald., Fairbank, Turner, Evans, Russell, and Southworth, ably supported by Williams,Johnson and Cochrane.

Ten of ou.r members ran for various of the University teams during the season. A. Fairbank came equal first for the Spartans, and I. Evans equal second for the fourth team in the matches against Oxford.

Finally a word of tribute must be paid to the brilliant running of Mike Turner throughout the season. He set up a number of new course records despite running often under the handicap of a succession of minor injuries. He also proved a very popular and efficient captain of the University Hares and Hounds, and led his team to success in the Varsity match with a run-away personal victory.

QUEENS' COLLEGE PUNTS The punts that were originally purchased for the Club at its inception in 1958 have begnn to find the strain of crowded river life rather telling, and consequently, having started the year with :five punts (one too many for the mooring space available), we withdrew two from service and replaced them with a practically new one. Receipts from hire to members of the College have dwindled gradually ever since the Club began despite a more efficient and reliable cleaning service introduced this year. Perhaps the weather has got worse, and familiarity has bred contempt, or the new generation of undergraduates is more examinationconscious than its predecessor.

SAILING CLUB Cuppers are rapidly becoming our strong point and this year we found ourselves in the semi-finals against Jesus, the eventual winners. Ware and Horsfall, despite strong efforts, could not bring the rest of the team up into winning positions.

James Ware was again awarded his Half-Blue and then sailed for the British Universities in America.

Neil Winship was to be seen in several yachts on the Solent; with John Reide, Rolf Laffan, Steve Graham and Peter Holt he also represented the Club in Cuppers.

DINNER IN THE NORTH-WEST The twelfth Annual Dinner for Q!!eens' men in the North-West took place on 6 April 1962, at the Royal George Hotel, K.nutsford.

The Annual Meeting was held on Saturday, 23 June. The Treasurer reported that 119 new members had joined the Club during the year. There had been a net loss of about £32, leaving a credit balan.ce of £77. 9s. 6d. The rising cost of printing had contributed substantially to the loss.

It was agreed to subscribe up to £43. 10s. from balances to purchase a new fl ag for the Main Gate of the College.

The President made a report on the effect of the Erasmus Build­ ing on College finances in general. Those present warmly urged the Governing Body to keep the Appeal Fund open and promised a support which has since been abundantly forthcoming.

About 170 members were present at the Dinner. The Club was proposed by Mr P. H. L. Ling and Mr Laffan replied. The College was proposed by Mr J. C. Gibson and the President 39

replied. Mr Browne was also persuaded to make a brief im­ promptu acknowledgement of the many references to the success of the Boat Club.

QUEENS' COLLEGE MAY BALL, 1963 The President and Fellows have given permission for a Ball to be held on Tuesday, II June 1963. There will be dancing from IO p.m. to 6 a.m., a champagne buffet, punts, etc.

Double tickets, at £6. 6s. each, may be obtained by writing to the May Ball Treasurer, �eens' College, Cambridge. Cheques must be crossed and made payable to �eens' College May Ball Account. Applicants are asked to specify if they would like to reserve a room in College, for which there is a charge of 5s., and also if they will require cold dinners provided in their rooms at a charge of 16s. a head. It would be greatly appreciated if applications for tickets could be made as soon as possible.
