THE VISIT OF THE PATRONE SS The year has been marked by the visit of our Patroness, ~een .Elizabeth, the Q!!een Mother, on 5 June 1961 to open the Erasmus Building.

As she entered the College, the Q!!een Mother was presented to the President, and then, followed by the Fellows in procession, she passed through lines of cheering undergraduates and members of the College staff to the President's Lodge,. where Mrs Armitage and her daughters, the Fellows and their wives, were presented..

The ~een Mother then proceeded straight to the Library, where she had sherry with a company ofsome fifty undergraduates.

This was followed by lunch in the newly decorated Hall with the Governing Body, the Scholars of the College and one or two other guests.

A highlight ofthe visit was the presentation in Cloister Court of a scene from Richard III, the May Week production of the 'Bats'.

The producer, A. J. Arlidge, and members of the cast were presented to Her Majesty.

After seeing the excerpt, Her Majesty moved to the New :Building, where large numbers ofundergraduates, old members of the College and their relations awaited her. In a speech, which is printed below, she used for the first time the name Erasmus Building by which it is now known. After mingling with the guests, she had tea in the President's garden with a party which included the Honorary Fellows, while the other guests continued the Garden Party in the College courts, proud ofan occasion which the unhurried calm of our Patroness had rendered fully memorable.

The following is the text of the speech by the Q!!een Mother at the Opening Ceremony: As your Patron I have always taken a particular interest in the affairs of the College, and I am very pleased to be with you on this happy occasion.

Six centuries of English history are written into the building of Q!!eens'; each one marking a stage in its development. In the past, endowments of the College came from benefactors, sometimes Royal, religious or commercial.

Today, it must be a source of pride to you that this building

has been made possible by the contributions of 1500 members of the College, whose generosity is proof of their loyalty to this place, and of their firm belief in the future.

Those who will benefit most from the latest additions will be the undergraduates, for a greater number of them will be able to live in College, and to share more closely in its corporate life.

To many who come up to Cambridge, the University is the first step outside their family circle, and it is of the utmost importance that the undergraduate should feel himself to be an integral part of the life ofhis College, and find in it the companionship and stimulus which may well prove as precious as the more formal teaching of the University.

In the past 500 years members of Q!!eens' have achieved fame in many walks oflife. It is fitting that this new building should be called. after the man who, by his passion for learning, became the foremost scholar of Europe at what Froude called the most exciting period in modem history.

Erasmus belonged. to those splendid days of the Renaissance when learning flowered. with unprecedented vigour, and the scholars of England were linked with the wider commonwealth of European learning, of which universities are the most characteristic inventions.

The ideal of the Renaissance was ' the whole man'. A man cultivated in the arts of peace and war; often, scholar, poet, politician and soldier at the same time.

I believe that today all universities are aware of the dangers of narrow specialization. They hope to recover some measure of that 'wholeness' in the training of their students, and I trust that in achieving that we shall see the best qualities of the Renaissance enriching our own times.

In that hope I now have much pleasure in naming the new addition to ~eens' College-'The Erasmus Building'.

The Erasmus Building The Erasmus Building, the latest addition to the College, was designed by Sir Basil Spence and¡ built by William Sindall, Ltd, the Cambridge builders and contractors.

Part of the cost-ÂŁ6r,.ooo, or over half-has been provided by members of the college in response to our appeal.

The building is in brick and specially selected Cotswold stone, and it provides accommodation for forty-three undergraduates and two Fellows.

It is L-shaped in design and is situated on the side of the Bowling Green that is further from the river, completing the Court formed by the Chapel, Friars' Building and DokettBuilding.

By supporting the building on brick arches and concrete pillars, the architect has been able to maintain a sense of spaciousness and, indeed, the view from the Court to 'the Backs' has been opened u.p and enhanced. It is modem in design, but great care has been taken to harmonize it with the pattern ofexisting college buildings.

There are three storeys of undergraduate rooms, with fitted furniture consisting of adjustable book shelves,. wash basin, food cupboard, hanging wardrobe and clothes shelves.

Bathroom facilities :include showers, and modern needs are reflected in the provision of a drying-room.

The passages are heated by radiant panels contained in the ceilings. The rooms themselves are heated by hot water convectors.

Both space heating and hot water for washing are derived from a new oil-fired installation in the basement ofthe Dokett Building.

The building represents a considerable addition to the amenities of the College. It is being used not to increase numbers of undergraduates but to enable those who come to the college to ha:ve a full share of the facilities afforded to Cambridge undergraduate life.

THE SOCIET Y The death of Mr Wood on r8 March 1961 deprived the College of its Senior and most colourful Fellow. Well known for many years as Dean and later as Rector of St Botolph's, he was active almost to the end. An appreciation is given below, taken from The Times of 20 March 1961.

The President is a member ofthe Standing Advisory Committee on Grants to Students.

Mr Deakin was in Ghana for the Michaelmas Term giving a course of lectures on 'Engineering Problems in Ghana' at the 5

University of Kumasi, of which the Vice-Chancellor was his first student in engineering.

Dr Holloway is on leave of absence for three years as Byron Professor of Poetry in the National University of Athens.

Mr Mathias was Visiting Professor in the Department of Political Economy, University of Toronto, Canada. He lectured in several lllliversities in Canada and the United States.

Two new Fellows have been elected. Dr Beament, well known to many generations of undergraduates for his activities with the 'Bats', is University Lecturer in Zoology and Administrative Officer of the D ep artment of Zoology, much concerned with the organisation of science teaching. Mr Brown is Senior Research Officer in Applied Economics.

There are also two new Honorary Fellows, both already members of the College: the Archbishop of Cape Town and Sir Thomas Padmore.

It is with great regret that we record the death, on 15 January 1962, of Sir Shenton Thomas, Honorary Fellow.

MR WOOD The Rev. Charles Travers Wood, Senior Fellow of G.!:!eens' College, Cambridge, died on Saturday, 18 March 1961, in his eighty-sixth year. He was born in Cheshire in 1875, educated at Shrewsb ury, and won an entrance scholarship in Classics at Pembroke College, Cambridge, to which he went in 1894. He had there a brilliant career. He was placed in the First Class (Division 2) in the First Part of the Classical Tripos in 1897, and in the First Class in Part 1 of the Theological Tripos in 1899. In 1898 he won the Jeremie Septuagint Prize, in 1899 the Bachelor's Carus Greek Testament Prize and the Crosse Studentship, and in 1900 the First Tyrwhitt' s Hebrew Scholarship and the Mason Hebrew Prize.

He was elected into a fellowship at �eens' College in ]900, being ordained deacon in that year, and priest in 1901. He was Senior Chaplain and Dean from 1907 to 1940, and taught Hebrew and Old Testament subjects from 1900 to 1940. In 1940 he retired from his college offices-except that of Director of Theological Studies, which he retained for a few years longer-and became

rector of St Botolph's Church. As a Life Fellow under older and happier statutes he retained his rooms, in the Walnut Tree Court.

He never married.

Mr Wood was a versatile man .. When an undergraduate he ran for Cambridge in Cross Country against Oxford. He maintained throughout his long life an enthusiasm for games and for walling and camping. A sunny day in winter was for him to the end a signal for a bathe in the Cam. He was a keen scout and genera­ tions of Cambridge boys owe more than they can easily estimate to his kindness and enthusiasm. Many undergraduates also owed to him their introduction to the best of the countryside. fu all these activities he was inexhaustible. Academically he might perhaps be said to have started and not had time rather than not been able-to finish. There are only three books. They are well done but not notable. He was a disciple of Westcott, Lightfoot, and Hort, and added Ryle and G. A. Smith to his list of modern prophets of Biblical themes. He knew little of German scholar­ ship and disliked what he knew. Shortly before he retired from his lectureship he addressed the Society for Old Testament Study, defending the traditional dates of the visits of Ezra and Nehemiah to Jerusalem. The pundits were all there, but their criticisms hardly seemed to undermine his defences. Had he attended. to Old Testament Studies with the vigour he gave to his :innumer­ able other activities he would have made a great name as a scholar.

But then his world would have lost many acts of kindness.

He was a very good and well-loved rector and he will long be remembered in Cambridge. In College business he could be obstinate but never grieved or bore grudges when he lost a motion.

On 19 May 1955 he celebrated his eightieth birthday, and was deeply moved by the many expressions of congratulation and good will which the occasion brought him in his parish and m his College, perhaps especially by a book presented by the junior members of the College to mark the event, containing many contemporary sign atures, and by an mvitation to preach on the followmg Sunday in his College Chapel.

GIFTS TO THE COLLEGE (ADDITIONAL TO THE LIBRARY LIST)

The Vice-President has presented an additional leaf for the mahogany table in the Combination Room.

On the occasion of his appearance in the Honours List, Sir Harold Bailey presented two pairs of bowls for use on the Bowling Green.

Mr Parmee has presented two silver George III dessert spoons, 1796 and 1801; and Mr Hagenbuch a silver tobacco jar to commemorate his tenth anniversary as a Fellow of the College.

LEGACY Mr Wood, who had previously made a gift of£600, left a further sum of £1000 for the benefit of students of the College intending to take Holy Orders in the Church of England.

THp LIBRARY The late F. A. Colenutt bequeathed all his remaining books to the College Library, including many fust editions of Goethe, Schiller and La Fontaine and a fine copy of the edition of Dante's Divina Commedia printed at Venice by Octavianus Scotus in 1484.

Together with the many notable gifts made by Mr Colenutt during the last ten years, amongst which were various early printed books of great rarity and value, this benefaction is the most important the College Library has received in recent times.

The late C. T. Wood, Senior Fellow, bequeathed his books to the College Library. This benefaction has provided many useful and important additions to various sections of the Library.

The Rev. J. F. Williams (1897) has added to his earlier benefactions the gift of some fifty volumes.

A new catalogue of the Old Library is now m preparation and, itis hoped, will be completed within two years. This work, which has now been gomg on for over a year, has been made possible by a bequest under the will of the widow of the former Librarian, Mr F.. G. Plaistowe.

THE FABRIC The Erasmus Building was opened by Her Majesty the ~een Mother inJune. Ithas given much satisfaction to those who have had the fortune to have rooms in it. An interesting discovery made during the building was the well from which water was drawn for the old pump which hides in the little four-doored entrance to the Fellows' garden. The well itself lay about 40 feet to the north-east, and it is not unlikely that it was the one used by the Carmelites. When the old sammer house behind Friars was taken down, a finely worked piece of clunch was revealed, recording the narrowing of the Carmelite exit doorway into the garden beyond, or perhaps the blocking of a window. It bears the date 1523.

The redecoration of the Hall was completed in time for Her Majesty's visit. All the Morris wall stencil designs have been restored and the thousand gold stars in the roof re-gilt. The 1948 gold paint on the panelling has been re-done with gold leaf; the effect is brilliant and will last many years. New serving tables have been installed. In the screens,. new lighting has been fitted, the notice boards have been moved into the cloisters and the fine wrought iron gates repaired and repainted.

The old willow tree near Silver Street bridge was damaged during the rebuilding there, and it was found that its roots had been attacked by the fungus, Armillaria 1nellia. It had to be taken down; but this eventuality had been foreseen and several cuttings from the old tree had been made a few years ago. The one now replanted is already 12 feet high.

The year 1962 opened with severe weather and brought with it a number of burst pipes, mostly causing little or no damage; but one on S Staircase which went unnoticed over the weekend caused great trouble, and at one time the stairs were thickly covered with ice.

The year began rather discouragingly, despite a promising intake of freshmen and a reserve of experience in five rst May Colours from the previous year. The first Light Four, having trained hard underL. V.BevanandJ.Parker (bothofL.M.B.C.andC.U.B.C.), and 'Bill' Williams, rowed a most dramatic race with L.M.B.C., the lead constantly changing; unfortunately, L.M.B.C. had more in hand, and won eventually by 1·2 seconds. Nor was the Fairbairn Cup Race particularly successful, as the first two Eights, intended as trial Eights for the Lents, finished eighteenth and twenty-first. The bright event of this term was the Colquhoun Sculls, which nearly produced an all....Q,!!eens' £nal: The fresh1nan P.J. Webb won (to go on to win a trial cap and row for 'Goldie') from Napier of L.M.B.C., who defeated J. F. H. Sergeant only after a re-row in the semi-final.

For the Lent Race.s, an inexperienced but powerful crew con­ taining :five freshmen, under the coaching (amongst others) of Peter de Giles and C. N. Hudson, rose one place on the first night at Pembroke's expense, but paid the penalty for a ponderous row­ over on the second by being bumped on the third by 1st and 3rd Trinity. With a row-over on Saturday night, the crew th.us started and finished fifth on the river. Five of this crew, with three third year May Colours, formed ·the Reading and Putney Head of the River Crews. After a rather unsatisfactory row at Reading, 14

finishing sixteenth out of 140, we began to show very real promiseatPutneyunder'Ham' Ward (T.R.C.), atone stage even out-paddling the Blue Boat.. The crew rowed. over fifteenth out of 280 crews, thus being the second fastest college crew.

So to the May Term. The first success was expected-the victory of Webb and Sergeant in the Lowe Double Sculls-but nevertheless very welcome. Dr A. S. F. Butcher, J.C. H. Cox and I. W. Welsh, all of Q!!eens', made important contributions to the First Eght's ultimate success, and thanks must go also to Dr G. Gray, I. M. Henderson and J.B. Chaplain for their work with the Second Eight, though limited by th.e available material.

In the May Races themselves the pattern was the same as in the Lents-disappointing. The First Eight bumped. Pembroke on the first night, to be bumped by St Catharine's on the third, again starting and finishing fifth. At Henley, however, with one change and the direction of 'Bill' Williams, this crew lost much of its roughness and gained much in speed: in the Ladies Plate, the preliminary round was won by about seven lengths against Emmanuel, but the first round against Pembroke was closer-by one and a half lengths in 7"o6. The Thursday race showed the Eight at its best, in a long battle with 1st and 3rd Trinity, which was won by three quarters of a length in 7"05. The semi-final against Lady Margaret B.C.- the eventual winners- was more of a race than the one and a half lengths' verdict suggests, and was by no means a bad row. With six foll May Colours in the club next year, prospects must surely be bright.

The College rugger team had a season of mixed achievements.

Of twenty matches played., ten were won. In the Michaelmas Term League, we finished third in the First Division. Although

this is the College's highest position since 1945, loss of form at the end of the Michaelmas Term was a disappointing conclusion after a promising start.

In the Cuppers, we were fortunate in the draw and had little difficulty in the fust two rounds. In the quarter-fmals, however, St John's proved too powerful, and we were defeated 15-0. �eens', it seems, specializes in a light and fast pack; and though this achieves some success in the league competition, when we are faced with the same teams reinforced by giants from the LX club, might wins.

The number of men who played rugger during the season showed a decline on previous years-a temporary trend, we hope.

While the Second XV achieved promotion to the Third Division, the Third XV recruited :from the highways and byways, main­ tained their position in the lowest division.

At the beginning of the season prospects looked bright, for in addition to the seniors already in residence a large number of soccer-playing freshmen, some of considerable ability had joined the Club.

However, representative matches and injuries, especially to the freshmen who had not played since school, took their toll and on many occasions the side found itself playing as many as seven players short of its full strength. Thus our final position of fourth in the league showed the power of our reserves who in the second team were champions of the Fourth Division, only losing one game somewhat unluckily.

It was clear in the Lent Term that Christmas good cheer had roduced several. amazing cures, so that we looked forward to a p long run in Cuppers. The draw against Downing, one of the 16

favourites for Cuppers seemed a little unlucky, but on the day itself all went well and the team for once realized some of its undoubted potential and won 1-0 in a hard fast game. In the second round two injuries and lack of fight, left us fairly easy victims to St John's, the closing finalists in the competition, by three goals to

nil.

Once again Pat Neil represented the University at Wembley; D. J. Rix and J. M. Davis were regular members of the Falcons side and J. H. Riley and D. S. Mace made their annual appearances.

Next year P. T. Neil is the University Secretary, and J.M. Davis is the Secretary of the Falcons.

As a whole the season was an extremely successful one, only six games being lost. Unfortunately these proved to be defeats of importance affecting the team's position in League I and also bringing the title of runner-up in the Cuppers final.

In the League competitions, the first team came third, whilst the second team attained top position in their league. This meant a play-off against St John's second XI for the honour of being the only second eleven in a league containing other Colleges' first elevens. Victory for ~eens' meant that both teams are able to play hockey of a high standard. In the final of Cuppers, the full first team were beaten by Clare, whilst the second eleven completed a successful season by beating Christ's in the second eleven Cuppers final.

The Easter visit to Follcestone Hockey Festival was enjoyed by all concerned, both on and off the field.

The Club had a very successful season, winning eight times and being defeated only once in nineteen games. The batting was very strong and failed on very few occasions. The Captain, M. J. Price, scored a large number of runs and always started the innings in lively fashion. Apart from him K. L. W. Armistead, A. G. Rayden, D. Stratford and P. C. Hatch all made many runs, Hatch making the season's top score with 100 against Bury and West Suffolk. The bowling was not quite as strong but P. W. S. Rowland and J. H. Riley were a dangerous opening attack, and B. A. M. Piggott took over 30 wickets with his slows.

It is perhaps worthy of note that against West Norfolk on a good wicket, we were dismissed for 47 and then proceeded to bowl them out for 30 aided by some good fielding, which generally maintained a high standard.

There was no official tour but several members joined the Captain in a week's cricket in Corfu, where they were very well received and won most of the games after they had sorted out the difficulties of the local matting wicket.

This last season has been a most successful one for the Club, as we maintained our positions in Division I of the inter-college relays, field events and Coppers, despite our lack of promment freshmen, especially in field events. Our reliance on seniors has produced good results though it does not augur well for next season. As in last season our representative honours have been very high: M. C. Robinson, J. R.H. Sale, D. M. Turner, C. T. Simey, J. A. B. Tolson andM. A. Tribe were all selected to run for the University against Oxford in May. M. C. Robinson was selected to go on the combined C.U.A.C. and O.U.A.C. tour of America and later in the season was awarded a Great Britain 'B' international vest. Both D. M. Turner and M. C. Robinson were selected to represent Great Britain in the World Student Games in Sofia in August, andJ. R.H. Sale, C. T. Sitney andD. M. Turner ran for the British Universities in their Annual Meeting with the A.A.A. and Combined Services. This is an outstanding record rivalled by no other college in the University and the Club may be justifiably pleased with its performance throughout the year.

The prospects for the season looked good, with the nucleus of the previous year's team to build on and several outstanding newcomers. J. I. Tattersall, Junior Champion of Great Britain in 1956 and 1957, won the singles and doubles in the Fresh­ man's tournament, and L. B. Barham, another of our fresh­ men, was also prominent in this event. D. L. Webster who 19

had seen the team rise from Division HI to the premier division returned suntanned from a year in Morocco for a fourth year, and his good humour and ability added greatly to the Club's strength. Thus, with two potential blues, three seniors who had represented the Varsity sides and several talented freshmen, we were eager for the start of the season.

The league final results were good and yet very disappointing: Trinity won with 68 points, �eens' were runners-up with 67 points with St John's close behind with ,6 5 points. The League was undoubtedly lost in the first match of term, the only one in which we were able to field a full side, when we allowed Pembroke to take away 5 points. Both Trinity and St John's defeated them 15-0, whilst we defeated St John's 9-6, lost to Trinity 7-8 and St John's beat Trinity ro--5. All our other league matches were won 15-0 and so the first match cost us the league. The Second VI had a good league match record, winning 4 and losing 2 narrowly.

Due to errors in score sheets the result of their league has yet to be decided, so they may be promoted. to Division IV, though they should be higher. It is hoped this year to rectify this as last year's Second VI were mostly freshmen. Coppers was unfortunate; in the first round we fielded our strongest VI and beat Fitzwilliam House 9-0, losing only 18 games in all. In the next round against a strong Downing side the team retired gracefully with both the Captain and J. I. Tattersall consoling each other in sick bay with mysterious diseases. Two Blues were too strong for a scratch side, although with our full team no college should have denied. us the Cup. The Club wishes to congratulate J. I. Tattersall and D. L. Webster on the award of their Fall Blues� the former playing at No. I won both his singles in the Varsity Match and also played at Wimbledon. He is also to be congratulated on his election as University Secretary for the coming season and on winning the University Open tournament singles, the Doherty Cup, and doubles. Full Colours were awarded to L. B. :Barham, R. S. Dawson and J. L Tattersall and. Half-colours to P. W. Howard, D.R. W. Hares, R. G. MacCormick and N. I. K. C1ark. Six of these are freshmen so we may look forward to a highly satis­ factory season next year.

Two points ought to be stressed in this report. First, as in previous years, we have a College swimming time which we share with Jesus College, and last year very few people made any use of it at all, despite the fact that there is no admission fee.

Secondly, in the past few years we have done rather badly in the Water Polo Cuppers, which begin towards the end of the Lent Term and continue into the Easter Term. The main cause of the failure to get beyond the first round was the lack of practice, both as a team, and as individuals within the team. This year, the Club hopes to make better use of the swimming time in this respect and to arrange for some qualified instruction.

There is no doubt that squash remains one of the most popular sports in the College this year. It was thought that with the departure of some of our keenest players the league teams would suffer in skill if not in enthusiasm; for last year's results were very encouraging. In spite ofJohn Harris playing for the Ganders and thus being ineligible for the league team, the First V has met with great success this season, and it is hoped that they will be promoted from the Second to First Division. The second and third teams have both shown skill in varying degrees, which promises " well for the future.

We now have several good outside fixtures including two against London clubs and it is hoped these will be continued as they provide invaluable experience against stronger sides. With Harris now in the University team and one or two 'potential Ganders', Q!!eens' should have a well balanced team for the forthcoming Coppers.

The Club's activities are always held under the auspicies of the Cambridge University Rifle Association, since a University range is the only practical means of carrying out the sport; consequently any shooting by members of the College is always with or for the University.

The year 1960-1 saw only one member of the College shooting regularly, A. D. W. Abbot-Anderson. He shot only full bore.

Having shot in most of the University matches before Bisley, he fuiished the year with the unusual distinction of shooting all types of full bore in the National Meeting. In S.R. (a) (Military Type) he gained a place in the Army VIII who were runners up in the Inter-Services Match; in S.R. (b) (¡303 with sling), he gained places in the Army Long and Short Range teams and the Irish 'National' Team (international short range match), and also gained his half-blue against Oxford in the closest Chancellors Plate ever held (Cambridge losing, n 5- n4) ; finally, in match Rifle (1000, 1100 and 1200 yards), he shot for the Irish Team in the 'Eccho' International Match. He has been re-elected ViceCaptain of S.R. (a) within C.U.R.A. for the coming season.

Prospects for 1961-2 are encouraging with three freshmen starting on arrival. This could produce a good. team for the only inter-college shoot, a falling plate knock-out competition, the London Scottish Cup. Last year QÂŁeens' College survived only two of the five rounds.

~eens' College Table Tennis Club enjoyed a very successful season, retaining the League Championship and being runners-up in the Cuppers, where we narrowly lost 4-5 to Fitzwilliam House in the final. Q!!eens' were able to call on the services of the old HalfBlueR.J. Stephens and ofM. M. Crosse, University second team Secretary. We were also very fortunate in finding a freshman with fine match temperament and consistent form in J. I. Tattersall.

Q!!eens' strength lay also in depth; the second team retained their posit,ion in League Division I despite relegation scores, and the third team in Division II remained fifth. O!!eens' is the only College to boast two teams in Division I and to have its thir,d team in Division II. The fourth team finished ninth and the fifth team narrowly avoided promotion, so will continu.e to play the Ladies Colleges next season.

Q!!eens' long run of success is probably due to having the best playing conditions in the University, drns attracting a very large number of players (there were fifty-two members of the Club in 1960-1), and to having such a hard working captain as M. M. Crosse to guide the Club.

This year the Club enjoyed its most successful season for many years. Both teams were undefeated in League matches, the first team winning the Second League and the second team being runners up in the Third League. In Ct1ppers the College were eliminated early, largely owing to the lack of good singles players.

The acquisition of an additional court for one evening a week at the Real Tennis Courts doubled the Club's practice times, and so greatly helped to raise the standard of phy. Unfortunat ely these extra facilities will not be available next year, and this will probably mean that membership will drop far below the 30 or so members of this year.

During the 1960 -1 season P. R.Johnston , a freshman and scratch golfer, played. against Oxford University. He also played for the English Youths against Scotland. T. C. H. Sale was Secretary of the 'Stymies' and won his top single in the match against the 0.U. Divots. J. H. R. Sale also played in trus match.

The ~eens' pairs in the Welsh Cup had the misfortune to he drawn against each other in the first round. P. R. Johnston and T. C.H. Sale beat J. R.H. Sale and P. G. Hatch and went on to reach the quarter-final.

The College team was once more undefeated in inter-college matches.

In the Lent Term match.es were played against Royston Golf Club and St Ives Golf Club, both of which were lost but thoroughly enjoyed.

According to the records the St Bernard Society in 1960- 1 must have had one of the most successful seasons ever. In attendance alone, the total for the Michaelmas Term 1960 was 216 for six meetings, for Lent 1961, 129 for seven meetings, and this term to date 137 for six meetings with one to come.

During the Michaelmas Term 1960 the quality of debating was high and the subjects discussed ranged from the cinema to the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, South Africa to Cambridge values. The high point ofthe term was reached in the last meeting, a 'balloon' debate, which sixty people attended, including, as a guest speaker, the President of the Union Society. The only unfortunate thing to report about this term's activities was the comparatively poor support from freshmen, which explains to a large extent the consistent decline in attendances from this time.

The Lent Term under a new President:, Stephen Sedley, saw two. very good discussions, one on 'What should a University newspaper aim at?' with the Editor and an ex-Editor of Varsity, and one on 'Is the Cathohc Church Obscurantist?' , led by the Superior of Dominican House. Communism and German reunification were debated, and the term ended with the annual dinner, at which Tony Firth, the President of the Cambridge Union, was the guest of honour.

The MichaehnasTerm concert was held on Monday 21 November, the main works being two Bach Cantatas. Four organ recitals were given at lunch-time during the Term; one by the organ scholar, Antony Le Fleming, and others by visiting performers from other Colleges.

In the Lent Term, a concert was given in Chapel on Monday 13 March, the main work being Haydn's Third Mass in D-the Imperial or Lord Nelson Mass-conducted by the Vice-President, John Emmerson. Madrigals and a string quartet made up the rest of the programme.

A joint evening of an informal nature was held with. the Bats on Sunday 19 February, the Bats supplying sketches, and the St Margaret Society some light interludes.

The main concert of the Society, the May Week Concert, was held on Friday, 9 June in Hall. Items ranging from the Jazz Cardinal's contributions to Madrigals of the Seventeenth Century were performed, the main work of the evening being 'Liebeslieder' by Brahms, stmg by the St Margaret Society Chorus.

Also notable among the items was the Vice-President playing some of his own compositions on the piano.

The year 1961-2 has been a very successful one for the Bats. It opened with a production by Antony Thomas of Marcel Ayrne's Clerambard, starring Trevor Bowen and Sonny Mackey. The play, an unusual blend of farce and seriousness, was extremely well received by capacity houses.

The Lent Term Production 'Two' was a Double Bill consisting of a Revue and a Musica1. The Revue, !ti to Bat, was written entirely by Dr Beament, whose lively, tuneful melodies gave pleasure to all. The Loo Hooch Story, a witty, satirical Musical about the fictitious life of the leader of an American jazz band, was written by Nigel Farrow and Anthony Arlidge. The Revue was produced by Joyce Q__mnney and the Musical by David Gooderson. The show was a great success.

The Cloister Court production this year was particularly noteworthy. On the occasion of the opening of the new Building, Her Majesty, Q!een Elizabeth, the Q!een Mother, honoured the Eats by watching an excerpt from the production, Richard III, and afterwards spoke to the producer, Anthony Arlidge, and members of the cast. following this auspicious beginning came near-disaster, when the first performance was abandoned because ofheavy rainfall. Nevertheless, the remaining three performances were very well attended, and the production, an ambitious one, was widely acclaimed. Trevor Bowen gave a fine portrayal of Richard, while first rate performances were given by Antony Thomas (Buckingham), Micheline Samuels (Elizabeth), Susan Andrews (Margaret) and David Barber (Clarence).

Afier the success last year of The Taming ofthe Shrew members of the Bats again decided to visit the Minack Open Air Theatre, Porthcurno, Cornwall. Frank Bechhofer produced a strong cast in Measure for Measure with Antony Arlidge as Angelo and Susan Andrews as Isabella.

The Club's activities during the past year may be summed up as organized inertia. For the second year running there were no freshmen with any previous experienc!'! of the game, and seemingly little interest in it at the University or College level.

Thus our only matches were of a social nature and will this year be again confined to matches against the women's colleges, who, it may be added, beat us soundly. It is only a few years since ~eens' was one of the strongholds of University Lacrosse, and it is a pity that the College cannot even raise a six for inter-College Cuppers, although there are many eager members when it comes to playing Homerton. D.J. Aidley and N. W. Browne played for the University Second XII this year, and the general standard within the University is now higher than ever.

CROSS-COUNTRY RUNNING At the end of the season 1960-1 the Club was able to look back on a record unrivalled by any other College Club.

The Inter-College League was convincingly won, Q!!eens' being unbeaten in all four triang ,:tlar matches, and thus gaining maximum points. Cuppers was won in similar style and we finished over fifty points clear of our nearest rivals, Peterhouse.

As a result of coming second and fourth respectively D. M. 30

Turner and M.A. Tribe were picked to run in the University first team against Oxford. S. A. Fairbank, twelfth, gained a Spartan's vest, and R. Robinson eighteenth was elected for the fourth team.

In the Varsity Match D. M. Turner was second equal, and T. Briault and M. A. Tribe sixth, both being awarded Full Blues. ~eens' met with equal success in the road relays. In the Selwyn event each of our three teams won their respective classifications.

Due to fine legs by R. Robinson and M. A. Tribe, D. M. Turner was given a 200 yard lead on the last leg of the first team, and the result was never in doubt. The College sent a team over to the St Edmund Hall Relay at Oxford, for the fust time, and scored an impressive victory. The highlight of the season was the Hyde Park Road Relay, which included. teams from all the provincial Universities. The College finished second to Manchester University. In a thrilling last leg D. M. Turner almost snatched victory, but had the consolation of turning in the fastest time of the day.

The successful relays team consisted of R. Robinson (Capt.}, M.A. Tribe, D. M. Turner, S. A. Fairbank., R. A. T. Alma and J. D. Perry.

M. Turner has also had many succes.5e5 in events not connected with the College. He won the Universities Championships at Loughborough , came sixth in the English National Championships,. and twenty-third in the International Championships at Nantes.

QUEENS' COLLEGE PUNTS Punts were not so frequently used as in earlier years, when, we are assured, the weather was finer.

There are now five punts, some of which are feeling their age.

It is proposed to sell two and purchase a new one in good condition for use next year.

SAILING CLUB Now that the Club has been fully recognized it moves ahead and its members seem to be spreading their talents well outside Cambridge.

The continued use of the relatively new a class dinghies has meant a great deal more tactical and instructive sailing. In the

Cuppers, in February, we lost to a strong Peterhouse team, but by no means without a :fight. The Cuppers and other matches have given much valuable experience to the beginners and this year we should be able to boast a Team with all participants in 'A' class.

Above this the Club was ,delighted to be able to congratulate James Ware on being awarded his Blue in the Easter Term.

Another good start for the Club was the Cambridge Marine week heldatltchenor inJune. T.J. M. Horsfall, M. R. de C. Sadler and A. B. Bevan-Jones all had an idyllic week sailing and racing amongst the more experienced University members, and it is hoped that in future years many other members will join in.

This term we beat Newnham on a windless but cold day when tactics and team-racing were quickly taught to those who were new to the idea. Next term it is hoped to organize a match against Somerville College, Oxford. The Club with many keen freshmen is enjoying a good season.

DINNER IN THE NORTH-WEST The eleventh Annual Dinner for ~eens' men in the North-West was held at the Midland Hotel, Manchester, on 14 April 1961 when a record number of fifty-four members of the College were present. The Guest of Honour was the President, Mr A. LL Armitage, and the Bishop of Blackburn presided.

The next Dinner has been arranged for Friday 6 April 1962, at the Royal George, Knutsford.

The Annual Meeting was held on Saturday, 17 June. The Treasurer reported that 126 new members had joined the Club during the year. There had been a net loss of about £4, leaving a credit balance of£ IO(). 5s. 9d.

About 180 members were present at the Dinner. The Club was proposed by Mr Ralph Harris, and Dr Sugden replied. The College was proposed by Mr John Peel, M.P., and the President replied.
