THE SOCIETY Members of the Club will be glad to know that the Governing Body, acting under powers granted to them by Statute, have extended the tenure of Dr Venn's Presidency until he reaches the age of 75.

Mr Laffan has retired from University and College Office, and now lives near Reading; he remains a Fellow for life. He has presented the College with three silver ash trays for use in the Combination Room.

Dr Findlay has resigned his Fellowship on appointment to an important post in the Civil Service, co-ordinating certain Government and University research work in physics. He was married, on Monday, 14 December, 1953, to Miss Jean Elizabeth Melvin, of America, and was the first Fellow of the College to be married in the Chapel.

Congratulations are due to Mr Hart and Mr Chadwick, on the conferment on each of the degree of Bachelor of Divinity.

Mr W. A. Barker, of Jesus College, has been elected into a Fellowship, and has succeeded Mr Laffan as Director of Studies in History.

Mr G. P. Wilson and Mr M. W. Holdgate, both of QEeens' College, have been elected into Research Fellowships; their subjects are Law and Zoology respectively.

VISIT OF THE PATRONES S Her Majesty QEeen Elizabeth the QEeen Mother visited the College on 14 February 1953 when in Cambridge to inspect the Flood Relief Organization. She was entertained to lunch by the President and a number of Fellows.

REPORT ON THE FABRIC Members of the College can now feel that the buildings are safe • and weatherproof, and that the state of decoration has been improved. Major and expensive work since the war includes the repair, with steel piling, of the river bank and the underpinning 5

of the Lodge where it abuts on the river, many exterior repairs to the Lodge ¡and the restoration of its oak and plasterwork, the strengthening of the roof of Fellows Building, the replanning of Friars staircases as bed-sitting rooms with fitted furniture, the paving of Friars, Walnut Tree, Fisher and Cloister Courts, and the conversion of the Old Chapel into the War Memorial Reading Room and of the old lecture room in ~eens' Lane into a Music Room. Other work has been the removal of the nineteenthcentury lantern above the Hall, and the installation of new boilers in the Kitchen and Dokett. During and since the 1953 Long Vacation the repairs to the decayed brick and stonework on G and H staircases have been completed and the Silver Street side of the roof of Old Court has been stripped and re-tiled. A high proportion of the wooden pegs holding the old tiles had rotted and there was a danger that areas of the tiling might slip into Silver Street.

One of the most satisfying pieces of work has been the restoration of the interior decoration of Bodley's 1891 Chapel. The plaster walls had been damaged by damp and the colour was dingy in the extreme. They are now uniformly whitened, together with the stone window tracery. The East End decoration had so faded that few of the present generation can have hitherto found it attractive. Under Mr Dykes Bower, the architect to Westminster Abbey, its original beauty has been recovered and it now shines with marvellous splendour of red and gold. The painted wooden roof reveals the original design picked out in dark green and near white, the East window is seen to have had its stonework patterned with lively detail, and the oak statues of St Margaret and St Bernard are to have richly decorated robes. New curtains, supplied by Watts, the same church furnishers whom Bodley instructed, are being specially woven to the original design. The heavy leather-bound record book kept by Watts has in his writing the detailed specification of brass ware, altar cloth and curtainsat prices which nowadays seem astonishingly moderate. When all the other work is complete, it is intended to have the medieval triptych restored, and the Chapel will be recognized as one of Bodley's finest pieces of work. c. s. D.

RETIREMENTS The College has lost the services of two Senior College Servants during the past year. Mr P. Leonard was Head Gardener since 1929, and Mr A. Chessum Head Porter during the years 1947-51, after which he became Library Clerk at the difficult time of transition to the new War Memorial Library. The Governing Body made presentations to both for their loyal and devoted services.

We are fortunate to retain six members of the 1953 Henley Crew, which recorded the fastest Queens' time over the course, and so, despite a decrease in numbers, the Club has made a good start this year. In the October Races the Coxswainless Fours lost to Lady Margaret by 8 seconds, breaking the College record by half a minute. In the Fairbairn Cup Race, the First VIII started 18th, and overtaking Lady Margaret II ended up 4th- again breaking a Queens' record by over half a minute. T. N. Hudson, Captain 1953-4, was awarded a Trial Cap and rowed in the Trial Eights at Ely, and is stroking the Blue Boat at the time of writing.

RUGBY FOOTBALL

We have had a disappointing season, but there is some consolation to be found in the fact that. R. L. Hitchcock and M. H. Bushby were away for every game and R. H. Umbers was also frequently absent. While congratulating them on playing for the University and for the LX Club, we certainly missed them, for our most apparent weakness was in the centre. The second XV under their Captain P. J. F. Baskett played splendid open Rugby, and was undefeated with 193 points against 23.

Committee: R. H . Umbers. , No less than six matches had to be cancelled in the 1953 season but of those played six were won and four drawn. The most s' exciting match was the last one, against Pemb roke, when QEeen pair last managed to pass the opposing total of ro2 with the together. M. H. Bushby, Secretary of the Varsity side, played ie well at Lords, and has been elected Captain for 1954. J. S. Guthr men s' QEeen also played at Fenners during the season, and three went on the Crusaders' tour to Holland.

ATHLETICS

A successful year saw ~eens' regain entry to Division I in the Cuppers and Relays, and win the cross-country Cuppers. In the Inter-Varsity match B. L. Callaway and R. T. G. Day finished second in thejavelin and 88oyards respectively. Day also represented Great Britain in a medley-mile Relay v. France, and ran for the British Universities team in the United States in the summer. In the Freshmen's match against Oxford, we had five representatives, and J. Lawrence broke the 2 mile record. In the crosscountry match, J. U. Shearn was Ist Cambridge man home, and Lawrence 2nd.

The Club is in a flourishing state. Having gained promotion to the second division at the end of last season, there is every possibility that the First VI will gain further honours in the coming year.

This has again been an uneventful year, but our numbers and the standard of play have both risen.

SWIMMING CLUB

During the season 1952-3, our activities were somewhat curtailed by lack of support. This was reflected in the Water Polo Cuppers in which the College was defeated by a strong side from Christ's.

SQUASH RACKETS

After the successes of last year, this term has proved sadly discouraging for the Club; a new rule was brought in, under which Ganders were not permitted to play in the Leagues. P. J. Ball and R. H. Norden were thus excluded, and the rest of us were not equal to maintaining QEeens' at the top of League I. Ball gained his Half-Blue, but in the Amateur Championship he was eliminated in the second round.

RIFLE CLUB

The activities of the Club have b~en confined to the Inter-College competitions of the Lent term, in which two pairs were well placed in the Macdonald Cup (Small Bore). In the Full Bore competition our team of four, though leading at one stage, was finally placed fourth.

Although the Chess Club has failed this season to repeat its excellent League results of recent years, our membership is strong, and success has attended both the Knock-out Tournament and our Cuppers matches.

TABLE TENNIS

QEeens' have this year five teams in the University League,. and retain the distinction of being the only College with two teams in Division I. Last season we were successful in winning the Cuppers • Doubles Competition, and three members,]. Howgego,J. F. Epps and G. F. Modlen, obtained re-election to the University Club.

LACROSSE

In the semi-finals of the 1952 Cuppers QEeens' lost by the narrow margin of two goals to one against St John's, the eventual winners. Both the Captain and M. P. Kershaw played against Oxford last year.

BADMINTON

The Badminton Club finished second in the League last year, and acquitted itself well in the Cuppers. During last season, the Club produced one Half-Blue, and R. G. Barker and B. C. Richards played for the University Second VI.

GOLFING SOCIETY

The Society played several friendly matches, all of which were won. Though we were unable to enter for the Inter-College League, owing to the difficulty of getting to Mildenhall, we hope to enter a pair in the Foursomes Knock-out Competition this term. J. M. Smyth played several games for the C.U. Stymies during the year.

SAINT BERNARD SOCIETY

The Society has waxed eloquent on several occasions during the past year. However, in QEeens' as in other Colleges, our engagements have reflected the attraction of the Union to many wouldbe orators. Hugh Thomas was President of the Union in the Michaelmas Term.

SAINT MARGARET SOCIETY

There has been a musical renaissance in the College of recent years, and the society is now established as an important part of College life. At some of the more outstanding of our weekly meetings we have had visits from Thurston Dart, Philip Dore, .Edna Iles, Mary Potts, Christopher Bunting, and Arthur Hewlett.

The St Margaret Society Chorus gave performances of Bach's Magnificat in D and Handel's Passion of Christ in the Lent Term.

Another major concert was given on St Cecilia's Day in the Michaelmas Term. The activities of the College Orchestra have been limited to a performance of Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 at the May Week Concert, conducted by Trevor Gartside.

Among other events were a most enjoyable Composers' Concert, an unrehearsed performance of Patience, in which all members of the College were invited to take part, and a complement of social activities.

In the Michaelmas Term A. P. Sheldon produced Blow Your Own Trumpet by Peter Ustinov, in which the succession of characters were well and amusingly played. G. W. Hartley and A. P. Dohren burg appeared in the main parts.

The original product ion in the Lent Term was again written

by R. S. Glen; this time it was a fairy-tale, Quiet in the Next Kingdom. A witty book was brough t to life by the producer, R. B. Cook, and Dr Beament' s music was delightful. The piece was so well received that two extra performances had to be given.

The Elizabethan product ion in May Week was Richard II, produc ed by J. Macdonald. The mellow red brick setting of the hall end of Cloister Court is ideally suited to the pageantry of the history plays. D. 0. New as Richard gave a very moving performance, and in spite of intense cold held the audience's attention through out. A. P. Dohren burg, disguising his transatlantic background, brough t a dignity and freshness to Gaunt. The high standard of acting showed that the continuity which has now been established in the Society ¡is bearing fruit.

During the year the Society doubled its numbers, and is now one of the largest in the College. No great profit was made, largely owing to the indifferent weather in May Week; but the finances of the Society remain sufficient to act as a safeguard against any future difficulties.

THE COLLEGE LIBRARY Since the last issue of the Record the Governing Body has considerably increased the number of books for the use of undergraduates in several sections and the aim is to make a really useful undergraduate Library in the War Memorial (0 ld Chapel).

The restoration of order elsewhere in the Library has been slower.

Our thanks are due to various givers of books, including Mr Wood, Mr Laffan, Mr Potts, Dr Seltman, Prof. Kirkaldy, Mr Armi,tage, Mr Chadwick, the High Commissioner for Pakistan, the College History Society, Mr J. L. Chater, Mr L. J. Dimmer, Mr J. Jackson, Rev. W.R. C. Joyce, Mr D. E. C. Yale.

Dr Findlay on retiring from his Fellowship deposited on indefinite loan a very valuable collection of 140 books for the Physics section.

Major W. J. R. Cragg of Sleaford in Lincolnshire has also very generously deposited with us on indefinite loan a fragment of an Anglo-Saxon MS. from the collection of the late Captain W. R. Cragg, from the same leaf as one of our own fragments. Mr N. Ker, of Oxford, has identified two MS. fragments of .JElfric's 'Lives of the Saints' in the binding of Boece's 'Historia Scotorum,' and has at his own expense had them expertly extracted, mounted, and bound, in the Bodleian Library at Oxford, and returned them with a full description for our records.

The Annual Meeting was held on Saturday, 20 June. The Treasurer reported that roo new members had joined the Club during the year. There had been a surplus for the year of £10. ros. rd., leaving a debit balance of £25. IS. rd. It was reported that the College had agreed to carry the whole cost (instead of half as at present) of printing and circulating the Address Book to Club members. A proposal to increase the Life Membership subscription to £2. 2s. was carried after discussion.

About 125 members were present at the Dinner. Mr B. C. L. Keelan proposed 'The Club' and Mr Laffan replied; Mr H. E. Midgley proposed 'The College', and the President replied.

It is with deep regret that we record the death of Sir Gerald Canny. He was elected a secretary of the Club at its first meeting, on Thursday, 3 · October 1912, and had held that office ever since.
