THE SOCIETY The President was absent from College from early in July till the end ofDecember, during which time, accompanied by Mrs Venn, he visited his daughter in New Zealand.

Under the College Statutes, Dr Seltman ceased to be a Fellow on reaching the retiring age. He remains as Librarian until 30 June 1952; his successor as Librarian will be Mr Hart, who is to begin duties from March 1952. Dr Seltman has been awarded the Greek Red Cross Medal with gold laurel .leaves for services during the war.

Walter Hagenbuch, M.A., formerly on the staff of the University of Manchester, has been elected into a Fellowship. He is a University Lecturer in the Faculty of Economics.

We congratulate Mr and Mrs Parmee on the birth of a son, Nicholas Hepworth, on 24 April 1951.

Mr Potts and Mr "Parmee are on leave of absence, and Dr Findlay will also be absent from March.

THE PICTORIAL HISTORY The Pictorial History of the College, 1448-1948, by Mr Browne and Dr Seltman, was published during the year. It contains 13 8 ' full-page plates with descriptive text. Mr Browne's collection of old prints has been supplemented by a photographic survey of the College as it now is, and the book gives a history in pictures from the foundation of the College up to the celebrations of its ~incentenary in 1948.

Members of the Club will unite in offering their congratulations on a unique achievement.

GORDON

Mr Gordon retired in October 1951 from the position of College groundsman which he had held for 56 years. He started what was to become a lifetime of service to the College in l 894, when he joined the staff of the garden. In the following year he moved to 4

the ground, a change which may have been brought about by some very successful batting and bowling in the Staff cricket match of that year. He served in the Army during the War of 1914-18, and was mentioned in despatches. This was the only interruption of his service to the College until his retirement.

A leaflet, suggesting a way in which members of the Club may show their appreciation of his work, is enclosed with this copy of the Record.

REPOR T ON THE FABRIC There has been much work done during the year in various parts of the College. The success of the conversion of O staircase into twelve bed-sitting rooms with fitted furniture, divan beds and enclosed wash basins, gas fires and hot water, and above all, on the top floor, a bathroom , justified similar operations on the other three¡Friars staircases. The former bedrooms had fireplaces which had seldom if ever been used, and some of the corresponding chimney stacks had been blocked up by jackdaws. From one of them at least a barrow load of neat short sticks had to be removed before the chimney could be used. When the trench for new drains was dug behind the building, we were reminded of the reason for the name when we came on traces of the old Carmelite cemetery on the site.

Another major piece of work, and an expensive one, has been the strengthening and re-leading of part of the roof of the Essex Building. Very many of the ends of the king-post trusses and rafters of the roof were found to be so badly weakened by dry rot that it was a mystery why the roof had remained in place, and the parapet above Pump Court also was in a dangerous condition . It is surmised that rain had originally penetrated through the brickwork of this parapet and, in bad seasons, soaked the wall plate, on part of which the parapet rested. When the wall plate rotted, some of the rafters sank, disturbing the guttering and so causing niore leaks. Mr Bull, now Professor of Engineering at Adelaide, designed reinforced concrete end-pieces for the roof trusses, which were bolted in position and then jacked up to restore the original roof levels.

There was also a leak in the roof of the Oriental Library und r the clock tower, and on examination it was found that some f this structure had suffered from dry rot. There was alarm wh n big larvae were found in the woodwork, which was allayed when it was known that these were those of a species of large wasp which had got into wood already rotten, and that the deathwatch beetle was not responsible. Meanwhile, the clock, which was erected in r 862, was completely overhauled in the Engineering Laboratory workshops, and is now ready for a long period of running. The-clock is now lit at night, and before long the clock outside the Fitzpatrick Hall will also be lit.

The Hall lantern has gone. The original H all was built with a chimney, and the lantern was put up in 1846. It spoilt the skyline of Old Court by being eccentric and competing with the belfry as centre of interest; but the immediate cause of its removal w as the fact that it leaked and that a scaffold would in any case be needed for its repair, and also for taking away the black-out arranged during the w ar. The cost of removing it and replacing the roof was found to be about the same as for repair. The original roof timbers are in good order, though a heavy brace had become loosened and had already slipped down some inches. It may be remembered that the interior of the roof is covered with gold stars. These are not just painted on the roof, but are cast in lead and covered with gold leaÂŁ It might be disastrous if the firmament were shaken; and one or two stars have fallen in the past. Twenty-one new stars have been made and fixed, we hope securely.

Most of the set~ on the top floors of the College now have gas fires and many others have been fitted, but this could not be done until new gas mains had been installed throughout the older part of the College. Much of the piping was the original, put in for lighting purposes long ago, and was far too small to serve for gas fires. But the age of the piping was betrayed by unpleasant leaks in the¡kitchen and on C staircase, and it was fortunate that no accident occurred before the cause was traced.

Other work to the fabric included redesign of the electric wiring system. An innovation has been the employment of a full time handyman to do small repairs to furniture, etc., before more expensive ones become necessary. :6

New rose beds have been planted in Fisher Court, and more recently in Walnut Tree and Friars Court; and Messrs Bath of Wisbech have, through an old Qgeens' man, E. M. Pearson (1925), presented crocuses to renew, within three years, the glories of twenty years ago. There are additional flowering trees planted in the Grove to take the place of several trees which have died.

THE WAR MEMORIAL LIBRARY Work was begun on the morning of Monday, 18June, 1951, when approximately 7000 books were removed to store and the old unsightly shelves dismantled. The engineers, who began to erect the steel girders, were followed by plasterers, painters, carpenters, and finally electricians. New steel bookcases-estimated to hold about 20,000 books-line the walls of the gallery and floor, and divide the latter into twelve bays in which reading tables stand under the fluorescent lighting. This is not yet complete, for the tubes await frosted casings which will modify the lights. The general colour scheme is dark green and light oak enlivened by the polychromy of the books, but the ante-room has a contrasting scheme of its own, with panelling painted a very pale young-apple green, setting off dark furniture like the two Essex bookcases and the new card-index cabinets. Here, and in the gallery above, the choicest drawings, water-colours, etchings and paintings in oils and tempera from the Temperley Bequest adorn the walls. A niche at the east end of the gallery displays an admirable ancient Graeco-Roman marble bust of Aphrodite, lent by the VicePresident. Mr E. S. Peck has presented a fine eighteenth-century marble mortar and a pestle, and the Librarian a bronze vase formerly in the Mitford Hall Collection. An oak stair leads from the ante-room to the floor above and to the gallery.

By the end of the Michaelmas Term some of the classes of books most frequently borrowed were transferred to the new Library, and this term it is functioning as a reading room for members of the College. But a total reclassification of the books and the creation of a modern systematic card-index is an arduous task that awaits the new Librarian of the College.

It is not possible as we go to press to give an exact statement of the position of the War Memorial Fund; we hope to have details ready for the next copy of the Record. The expenses have, however, considerably exceeded the total of donations, and further contributions will be gratefully received by the Keeper of the Records.

The club had a very disappointing year, largely due to a dearth of experienced old members. Individual honours went to R. C. Wright who stroked the winning Trial VIII. In the Mays the Eight went down to Emmanuel and Pembroke, both very sue- ' cessful crews, and at Henley was defeated in the Ladies' Plate by Trinity Hall.

In the Michaelmas Term the first XV rose two places in the League. In the 'Cuppers' the following term the College drew Downing for the third year in succession and lost 11 points to 6, after leading for three-quarters of the game.

D. A. ~ine played for the LX Club and University when injury did not prevent him. T. E. Richardson, G. Clarke, M. Phillips and D. Stone represented the LX Club during the Lent Term, and M. Emerson played twice for County Durham.

ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL

The club enjoyed a successful season. The team gained thiro position in the League competition, and in the 'Cuppers' the following term QEeens' reached the final. Though we were beaten 1- 0 by Emmanuel, this was a very fine match between two powerful teams.

QEeens' boasted four Blues in R. Cowan, University Captain, who later gained an International cap, G. W. Hall, E. W. N. Jackson and N. M. Marshall. At the end of the season, P. Jones was elected secretary of the Falcon Club.

HOCKEY

The main feature of the 1951 season was the promotion of the College team into the First Division of the League. It was a disappointment to be knocked out of the 'Cuppers' in the first round, but some consolation to be beaten by Clare (4-2) who went on to win the Cup. E. N. Button again represented the University against Oxford.

ATHLETICS

The club started the season well by sharing first place in the Field Events Competition with St Johns. R. Braams was selected to represent the Cambridge Freshmen against Oxford. In the 'Cuppers' QEeens' was placed second to St Catharine's.

As a result of the University Sports A. C. Wood and B. L. Callaway gained half blues. J. G. Clarke and E. Collins were elected to the Achilles Club, and A. C. Wood and E. Collins to the Alverstone Club.

CRICKET

College cricket had, an enjoyable season, with the majority of finished games ending in our favour. All too often, however, although the batsmen- led by R. G. Barker, N. Marshall and E.W. N . Jackson- had compiled what should have been a winning total, the bowlers were unable to press home the advantage.

The tour after the May Term consisted of another visit to Somerset, and was a great success. The side was undefeated, winning four out of six games.

A. E. H. Rutter played regularly with the Crusaders, and made many high scores. J. S. Guthrie also played for the Crusaders.

0. B. Popplewell kept wicket for the University side for the third successive year.

SQUASH RACQUETS

Although fortunate in having G. W. T. Atkins available for the more important matches, the College Teams were not outstandingly successful. They maintained their positions in the League and survived two rounds of the 'Cuppers '.

G. W. T. Atkins, as University Secretary, again led the team against Oxford.

TABLE TENNIS

Although possessing no player of University status, the club is now the largest in the University with considerable all-round strength.

In the League the second and fourth teams gained promotion, and ~eens' is now the only College with two teams in the First Division.

In the' Cuppers' ~eens' reachedthesemi-finalsinbothsingleand doubles competitions, in each case losing to the eventual winners.

The team narrowly missed promotion. R. A. Barron reached the final of the Freshmen's Doubles Tournament.

P. S. Wharton and R. T. Hazell were elected to the University L.T.C., and R. T. Hazell was awarded a trial.

LACROSSE

The club was defeated in the semi-final of the 'Cuppers' by Christ's.

P. B. R. Gordon, J.C. Kershaw and H. Higgins gained their half-blues. G. W. Wilde gained his Eagle's colours.

Results in the Relays and Water-Polo 'Cuppers' were disappointing. S. Shaldon played in the Inter-'Varsity polo match.

RIFLE CLUB

~eens' continued to be well represented in University shooting.

H. W. Symons, captain of C.U. Small Bore Club, and P. W. Taylor shot against Oxford. At the County S.B. Rifle meeting, P. W. Taylor and P. G. Watson were placed second and fourth at roo yards. In the College Pairs, P. W. Taylor and H. W. Symons were second, and P. G. Watson and J. R. Sandford fourth.

Apart from the Sunday evening gramophone recitals, the Michaelmas and Lent Terms were marked by three Organ recitals by the organ scholar, and two concerts by members of the Society.

The May Week concert included harpsichord solos by Mary Potts, madrigals and part songs by the Saint Margaret singers, and Handel's Concerto (Op. 4, No. 2) for piano and orchestra. The variety and high standard of this concert made it a great success.

SAINT BERNARD SOCIETY

Four meetings were held during the year. Though attendances were not large, the interest among freshmen gives hope for the Society's more prosperous future.

A number of enthusiastic freshmen gave the ' 'Bats' a fresh impetus this year, and in the Michaelmas Term a double bill of Everyman and The Happy Journey, by Thornton Wilder, was produced by J. Parker and W. Watts with a large cast.

The most interesting production of the year was possibly that in the Lent Term of The Remembered Heir (or Where There's a Will, There's a Waly-0). This was an original ballad-opera by the President, R. S. Glen, with music arranged, composed and conducted by Dr Beament; the producer was R. B. Cook.

The main production of the year was King Henry IV, Part One in Cloister Court, when full houses proved the increasing popularity ofthis annual occasion. The production was by C. Temblett-Wood, with D. Wade as King Henry and M. Hall as Falstaff. Neither the weather nor the May Ball materially affected the four performances.

Members of the Society continue to play in University productions. C. Temblett-Wood was secretary of the Marlowe Society and took part in the independent production of That's All One, as well as in the University Actors' Othello. Other appearances were made in the A.D.C.'s St Joan; the University Actors' Browning Version; Theatre Group's Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme; the Footlights' Flash in the Cam and, in the Long Vacation Term, An Historical Pageant of English Music.

At the end of this year, the Society gave a vote of thanks to Mr Potts, who resigned the post of Senior Treasurer.

MISCELLANEOUS Sir R. W. Bullard, K.C.B., K.C.M.G., C.1.E. (i906), is Chairman of the,Treasury Committee for Studentships in Foreign Languages and Cultures, and is Director of the Institute of Colonial Studies, Oxford. He is also the author of Britain and the Middle East (i95i).

G. H. Kingdon (i9i2) has retired after thirty-three years at Bigshotte Preparatory School. 路 W. S. R. Thomas (i9i5), formerly M.P. for Southampton, doctor and barrister, has been elected Chairman of the Council of the R.S.P.C.A. j.' C. Lejeune, M.B.E. A VOICE FROM THE PAST Mary Waddington (nee Yorke), eldest daughter ofJames Yorke, Bishop of Ely, 1781-1808, in a letter from Trumpington, 1789-90: 'The new Master of ~eens to the great joy of all his friends is they say quite recovered. The accounts they received at Cambridge were so bad that the faculty there judged it impossible that he should recover, and the Fellows were summoned-some of them came 300 miles-to elect a new Master. I did not know that a new Head of a College, like a new Pope, was to be elected almost before the death of the preceding.'

The Annual Meeting was held on Saturday, 16 June. The Treasurer reported that 153 new members had joined during the year, and that there had been a loss in the current account of ÂŁ45. 18s. 9d. The nominal value of the capital was ÂŁ986. 45. 7d.

About 140 members were present at the Dinner, which was held in a marquee on the Bowling Green. Mr R. C. H. Cox proposed 'The Club', and Prof. Kirkaldy replied; the Rev. W. H. Braine proposed 'The College', and the President replied.

Every member of the College who has played on the ground during the last half-century will remember Gordon, whose retirement from the position of College groundsman is announced in the Record. He seems scarcely to have aged with the passing years, and it is pleasant to record that, though he is now in his 75th year, he is in good health and is enjoying his very well-earned retirement.

Not only do many remember Gordon, he himself remembers many hundreds of ~eens' men, and always looks forward to meeting some of his old friends during the Club week-ends in June. As he lives close to the ground, and visits it on many days, old members can still expect to meet him if they visit the ground.

I feel that there may be many who would like to thank him for his work for the College, and I suggest that the way in which this could be done which would appeal to him most would be to make a book full of the names of members of the College who would like to be remembered to him. A form is being sent round with this Record, and can be filled in by anyone who wishes. The relevant part of this will be cut out and fixed into a book, with the various years arranged on separate pages, and provided with a suitable introduction. This book will then be presented to Gordon from all who have signed the form. Anyone who wishes may send a small sum of money to help defray the cost of making and binding the book; if there is a surplus balance it will of course be given to Gordon.
