1942-1947 NOTE The College Record is normally sent every year to all members of the Queens' College Club. For this one year it is being circulated to all members of the College whose addresses .are known. Any one receiving this who is not already a member of the Club is invited to join, and may send a cheque for £r. Is. od. to the Treasurer, Mr J. W. Findfay. This subscription covers membership for life.

It would be of great service if members of the College would kindly inform the Keeper of the Records of any changes in their permanent addresses.

The information given here is largely based on the replies received in answer· to a circular letter sent to all Queens' men.

Several hundred of these letters were, however, returned by ·the Post Office, and many others were not acknowledged. This reco�d must therefore be very incomplete, and the Keeper of the Records will be very grateful for additions or corrections addressed to him at Queens' College. The Governing Body are anxious to complete an accurate list of names for the College War Memorial as soon as possible, and they will welcome any information that will enable them to correct the list included in this Record. · The Keeper of i:he Records gratefully acknowledges .the help given by those who returned the forms enclosed with the circular letter. QUINCEN TENARY CELEBRATIONS The five-hundredth anniversary of the foundation of the College falls on Thursday, 15 April 1948, and arrangements are being made to celebrate the event. · The College is to be honoured by a visit from Her Majesty The Queen, who has graciously consented to be present at a Garden Party on Friday, 25 June.

On Thursday, 15 April, an official Dinner will be held, to which the authorities ofTown,and University will be invited. A College Ball will be held on Tuesday, 15 June, and on Saturday, 19 June, a Dinner for non-residents will be held in the marquee previously used for the Ball. In this way we hope to accommodate about 3 50 members ofthe College, though ofcourse it will not be £bssible to provide rooms in College for anything like that number.

Undergraduates and others in residence will be invited to Dinner at a date in the Easter Term.

Finally, the College will entertain its Employees to a Garden Party to be held during .the Long Vacation. · Notices and invitations· to these functions will be sent in due course, and the College will do everything in its power to ensure that as many members as possible can take part in our Celebrations.

The retiring Treasurer, Dr E. A. Maxwell, announced that during the years 1939-47 the number of new members was 402; the balance at the bank was £368. rs. ud. and the n9minal value of the capital was £uu. 15s. rd. The President explained proposals about the Wa'r Memorial and later left the Chair while Dr Maxwell announced that the ·Governing Body was to have Dr Venn's portrait painted. The meeting decided to make a gift of £850 towards the War Memorial and of £150 towards the portrait'. _ COLLEGE NEWS. There have been sev�ral changes of College Office since the w�.

Dr McCullagh became Senior Tutor in October" 194.5_, on the retirement of Mr _Potts from the Tutorship. Mr Armitage was appointed a Tutor early in 1946. Mr Findlay has been appointed Junior Bursar and Mr Chadwick Chaplain. · On his retiremeni from the Junior Bursarship Dr Maxwell became Keeper of th� College Records, and he has also since been appointed Praelector, In 1940 Mr Wood retired from the office of Dean, to which he was first appointed in 1907. He has become Rector ofSt Botolph's, Cambridge, but retains his old rooms in College as a Life Fello.y. :, : ', He was· su�ceeded as Dean by Mr Hart.

, . _The Right Reverend G. A. Chase, D.D. (1905), Lord Bishop of · Ripon and lately Master of Selwyn College, has been elected into an Honorary Fellowship. The Bishop was a scholar of Queens', · and his father was President and afterwards Bishop of Ely. . On 22 May 1946, Mr Sleeman married Rose Ellen Baxter, daughter of Mr and Mrs Paget Baxter of Tottington Mount, Small Dole, Sussex.

Mr P. F. D. Tennant has accepted a permanent appointment in the Foreign Service and resigned his Fellowship. He is at present Press Attache in· Paris.

The College has lost by death three of its Honorary Fellows, Charles Tate Regan, M.A., Hon. D.Sc. (Durham), F.R.S.; Sir William Peel, K.C.M.G., K.B.E., M.A.; Sir Charles John Howell Thomas, K.C.B., K.C.M.G., Hon. LL.p. (Wales).

Mrs T. C. Fitzpatrick has presented a portrait of her husband {President 1906-31) to be hung in the Fitzpatrick Hall.

Mr A. D. Power (1894) has established� Prize in memory of Dr Melsome, formerly Fellow, for the benefit of a medical student graduating with Honours.

The Governing Body has accepted with gratitude an offer from St Bartholomew's Medical College (who left us in April 1946) to ·establish Studentships in Clinical Medicine for members ofQueens' College proceeding· to St Bartholomew's Medical College to complete the clinical part of their training. These Studentships are called 'Rahere Studentships'. · _ · · We have received and recorded news of many distinctions and appointments, and regret that space will not allow us to ·publish them all..

The College _has recently purchased a large house, No. 12 Selwyn Gardens, to provide more rooms for undergraduates. . . Serious damage was done by lightning to one of the chimney stacks in Fria:r's Building in September 1946. This is the third time pie College has been struck in recent years. . ·. . · .-The very heavy floods in March 1947 invaded the ground-floors of the Fisher Building and also the Squash Courts, doing consider­ able damage. The river-bank, already in danger of slipping into the river, was further undermined, and the College Gardens were entirely under water. In a severe gale the Grove suffered the loss f several trees.

All members of the College will wish to join in our congratula­ tions to the Boat Club, whose three boats made thirteen bumps in t�e four days. The first boat now occupies the fourth place on the., nver.

A. S. F. Butcher has been awarded his Rowing Blue. He is the fourth actual Rowing Blue the College has had, not counting two coxes. We had two, Warlow and Prior, who rowed in the same boat in the r86o's, and not another until Gray, about 1930.

The College Magazine, The Dial, has begun publication again.

The following account of Queens' College in war-time is based on an article written for The Dial by Mr Potts and Mr Hart.

'DURING THE WAR' We are glad to accept the in~tation of the Editorial ¡Committee to place on record a few facts; for, although to many of our readers much of what we here write is well known, it has always been part of the business of The Dial . to preserve fragments of College history. Yet we write, now that the time to do so has come, with some reluctance, since the strain and tediousness of the war years have already fallen into the silence and obscurity which so well become them. The College flourishes at least no less than_ it has ever done. Of those who left us with their academic careers incomplete many have returned, two of them (Mr Findlay and Mr Latham) as Fellows. Of the four Fellows who were away for the whole of the war (Mr Laffan, Dr McCullagh, Dr Ramsay, and Mr Tennant) the first three are back; Professor Bailey, who was away for part of it, returned earlier.

For most of the war we had scarcely any third year, and a much reduced second year. Our numbers decreased by irregular jumps to about half what they were before the war; the figures for the six Michaelmas Terms may be of interest: 1939 'Non-technical' subjects II7 'Technical' subjects 91 Medical Students .

These classifications were a regular part of the jargon of the Ministry of Labour and the Joint Recruiting Board, who gave defermi:'.nt of national service, or reservation, to certain classes of men a~cording to constantly varying regulations. Fortunately for the College, Mr Browne was an active member of the Joint Recruiting¡Board; and when he could not answer questions about the regulations we could always get the best advice from Mr Garden, of the Ministry of Labour, whose constant patient helpfulness to many Cambridge men and their Tuto~s ought to be put on record. The number of men reading non-technical subjects (roughly, the 'arts' subjects) was at first large, but soon decreased 7

towards a negligible number; they were given deferment to complete the year here in which they would otherwise have been called up. A larger measure of deferment was given to men required for training in radio or engineering or other technical services, military or civilian. Medical students were not given deferment but were in a reserved occupation, subject to annual reports of satisfactory progress from the College authorities. All these three classes had to serve while at Cambridge in the Home Guard, Naval Division, Air Squadron, N.F.S., or Despatch Rider Service. The 'Short Course' Cadets were enlisted members of the armed forces selected by the Admiralty, the War Office, or the Air Ministry for six-month courses at the Universities. About half their time was spent on service training, and the other half in University study. Some of them had been accepted for admission to the College before they enlisted; the rest were allocated to us by a University Committee; they were all, however, full matricu­ lated members of the University. In the later' years of the war a high proportion of the men reading technical subjects were State - Bursars, who came under Government orders, chiefly to train as engineers or in radio.

It was a period of over-population. Throughout the war about' forty sets were occupied by the pre-clinical section of St Bar:tholo­ mew's Hospital Medical College, two students to a set. This system of 'doubling' was also necessary for our own men in the, first year of the war, and for all the cadets. Bart.'s kept consider­ ably longer terms than we did; but our own men had to do extra · military courses (the so�called 'camps') during the vacations. For these courses they resided in College. Nearly all the medical students arid men reading technical subjects were also here each. year for the period of Long Vacation residence. The Cadet Courses began in October and April and continued (with ohe short. leave) until March and September. The College was never closed.

On_the very few days of the year when there were no courses in progress volunteers remained in College for A.RP. duties.

These prolonged periods of residence imposed a severe strain on the College staff, which never failed us although its numbers were sadly depleted: We .should like to take this opportunity of putting on record our sense of indebtedness to the College servants in the Office, the Kitchen, the Porter's Lodge, the Garden, and on the 8

staircases. T he severest strain was on the Kitchen. Before the war men usually had breakfast and lunch in their own rooms. During the war Mr Chamberlain and his staff served three meals a day for every one in residence. Mr Chamberlain's unremitting energy and resourcefulness repeatedly saved difficult situations~as when the Home Guard. used to be ordered out at short notice with ¡ sandwich lunches, and of course on the occasion when we had to cope in the middle of the night with hundreds of soldiers from the beaches of France in 1940.

A.RP. duties were under the supervision of Mr Browne, whose figure rises before any of us who now look back on the war years as that of the man who held the College together. (He also acted as Steward, for Dr Ramsay.) In the early months ofthe war a few encouraging heaps of sand-bags were established in the hope of providing blast-proof shelters in time of need. Fortunately their qualities were never tested. From the beginning of the war the College organized a system of A.RP. duties divided among all the members senior and junior of Queens' and Bart.'s, and this system never had to be altered except in small details: we think we invented the Fire Guard plan ! The College buildings suffered no damage from enemy action, but in June 1940, Langley, our Butler, together with his son, were killed by a bomb at their own home in Cambridge.

Besides Bart.'s, we had with us throughout the war, Dr Irwin, -a lone migrant statistician in Government service . . Out occasional guests included soldiers from France in 1946 (who mounted guns in the courts during air-raid alerts), a school of officers or so, and a section of the Army Intelligence Corps.

Relations between the College authorities and those of Bart.'s were extraordinarily happy. In this we were very fortunate, for the_position could have been most difficult. We elected Professor Hopwood, the Vice-Dean of Bart.' s,-into an Honorary Fellowship, and the compliment was returned when Dr Venn was made a Perpetual Student of St Bartholomew's. ¡Professor Hopwoodsuaviter in . modo, fortiter in re-smoothed the way through rough places, and through him and Mr Willans and Professor W ormall, ' all the inter-collegiate business was conducted with unfailing friendliness. We are glad that Professor W ormall and Mr Willans also became members of Queens' College. Professor Hartridge 9

was a stimulating influence on the High Table during his mid-week visitations.

In conclusion we should like to say something about the Society.

The President held the office of Vice-Chancellor of the University in 1941-42 and 1942-43 with conspicuous success in most difficult circumstances. He has also been able to continue the publication of Alumni Cantabrigienses.

Mr Sleeman came back to College at the beginning of the w�r, to direct the studies of our Natural Scientists and medical students, and stayed until the end of the war was in sight; when he resumed this task no one else could have performed it adequately.

In 1940 Professor Cook published both parts of vol. m of Zeus, · and so completed that great work; he was elected a Fellow of the British Academy in 1941. Professor Bailey, although engaged on national service for some years, continued to contribute to learned journals and to publish books; he too has been elected a Fellow of the British Academy, in 1944. Dr Maxwell has written a book on Geometry, while contending as Junior Bursar with almost insuperable difficulties.

Early in 1940 Mr Seltman left Cambridge to take up a temporary appointment as Professor in the University of Paris, where he taught in the Sorbonne. He was evacuated just before the fall of Paris and returned in time to take up the duties of Senior Proctor for 1940-41.

Numerous members of the College were directed by the · Ministry of Labour into research work in Cambridge Laboratorie� during the war. It has thus been curiously true that the years 1939 to 1945 were years of unusual output from Queens' men in the world of learning.
