Island golf is waiting for you!

Considering the weather over the last few weeks, it seemed apt that I had a lesson on playing golf in windy weather. It was interesting to learn how the wind can really affect a person in both your physical performance (balance, swing control) and your mental state (increased frustration or distraction). So, I thought I would share with you some tips to improve your drives in the wind:
Ball Position: Place the ball slightly further back in your stance. This lowers the launch angle, which can help keep the ball under the wind.
2.
Grip and Swing: Grip the club a little tighter and shorten your swing. A more controlled swing helps maintain accuracy.
4.
3. Stance: Widen your stance for stability, as the wind can make balance tricky.
5.
Club Selection: If you would normally hit a driver, consider using a 3-wood or a hybrid. These clubs help keep the ball flight lower, reducing the wind's impact.

Tee Height: Lower the tee to keep the ball flight lower, minimizing its exposure to the wind.
Hopefully these will help you next time you’re out practicing!
It was so great to see some of our young footballers from Queenscliff FNC signing up, taking advantage of the ‘off season’ membership. I hope they enjoy their time on our course!
October looks to be a busy month with the ladies playing 2 rounds in the RJ Pearce and then the Stroke Medal playoff; and the men competing in 3 rounds for the Syd McSween Shield. Don’t forget to get a team together for Batto’s Bash on October 25th. From the planning it looks like it’s going to be a great day!
It will be quiet on the golf front for me for the next few weeks. Vince and I are off to Japan. Not only will we be enjoying the hospitality, food and Japanese whiskey but we are hiking some of the Kumano Kodo trail - a 1200-year-old UNESCO World Heritage-listed trail that crosses the Kii Peninsula and the sacred Kumano mountains.
See you on the course (when I return).

When: Thu 31 October

The week had finally arrived where we take on the project of lowering the 9th tee. This idea was brought forward to me to mitigate the risk factor of any innocent golfers on the putter getting struck by a stray ball. Over the past 12 months it has seemed to become a major safety issue with multiple reported close calls. As well as the few cars in the car park becoming victim and the clubhouse being hit weekly. It was time for the club to take action.

First step to our process was to strip the tee off with any salvageable turf to keep. This turf will be used for the surrounding areas coming into the tee.
The new tee top will layed with new Sanata Anna couch which will give it the best chance to grow so it can be played on in a shorter period of time.
2nd step was to move all the excess dirt and create the mounds for protection on the carpark and give the tee a hidden feel away from carpark distractions (noise, cars driving into the club). We uncovered some pure sand in the middle of the tee. We salvaged this sand and stock piled it onto our turf nursery to be able to use for top dressing the couch nursery.

3rd step was the final shaping and marking and digging out where our new irrigation line will go. The irrigation on this tee has never worked to its full potential especially when there is wind. Which this tee is probably in the windiest spot on the

4th stage was digging up mega sods with the excavator to place on these mounds to stop any dust or sand blowing around the car park. It will give the mounds the best chance of growing anything having these established chunks of turf.
Over the next week or so we will be laying the Santa Anna turf on the tee top. Installing the irrigation lines and sprinklers and correctly programming them. Application of starter fertiliser and top dressing to give the turf a big boost to establish and then final planting of native grasses and landscape some areas on the edges.
A big thank you to Anthony Webber and Cruze Strange of Lake and Land for taking on this project with us. Cruze having golf course construction experience really made all the difference being able to shape it to work with the land. His knowledge and golf skills really helped have the eye for it. These two members are very helpful in a club like this and we appreciate it a lot.

We look forward to seeing the progress of this tee come into play.
Happy golfing, Jake
