ISLAND GOLF GAZETTE

FROM BARB LUPPINO
Thank you for the incredible honour of being named your Club Captain.
I am both humbled and excited to take on this role and have been overwhelmed by the number of messages of support. This club is full of talented and passionate individuals, and together, I believe we can achieve great things both on and off the course.
My goal is to foster a spirit of teamwork and sportsmanship. I am committed to supporting each of you and ensuring we have a memorable and successful year. And I will be embracing this opportunity with enthusiasm and determination.

“You’re on the green Dorothy!” was an exclamation I overheard on the 9th from the clubhouse on a beautiful sunny Monday morning. Golf is a truly special game and there are so many reasons why it can be a positive influence in your life. But that sheer positive joy in her voice summed it all up perfectly.
Good luck to everyone participating in the first round of the 2024 club championship on Saturday. I hope you all have a fantastic day on the course. I would like to take a moment to acknowledge last year's winner, Stewart Drayton, for his impressive performance and well-deserved victory.
See you on the green, Barb

MEMBER BOOKINGS ARE ESSENTIAL

Please book and report to the Pro Shop before teeing off, even when practising or playing socially. This is critical for Clubhouse operations, your safety and to avoid disappointment when you discover that the previously vacant tee time you had been eyeing has been filled.
Thank you to the Monday Work Group Volies for giving the competition markers a facelift.

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS ARE FINALLY HERE!
Coming into the first round of the championships we have been very busy with our maintenance program. Presentation and playability is key.
Our spray unit has been putting in some hours this weekspraying herbicide on fairways and rough as well as putting liquid fertiliser on tees and select fairways.
Spraying broadleaf weeds has been a priority this week before they take over the course. Over the next few weeks, more areas will continue to be sprayed. A quick feed of nitrogen and iron on the tees, surrounds and selected fairways to give a dark green contrast.
Bunker works are still underway on the 7th hole. The completion of the right-hand bunker meant we could make a start on the lefthand side bunker. This also holds water and needs to be raised.
Local rule applies with purple stakes for the drop zone. Sorry for any inconvenience but due to circumstances out of our hands this couldn’t be completed this week.
Our greens are currently running pretty quick for this time of year. Running at 11-12 on the stimp meter. This is due to our regular rolling schedule.
Good luck to everyone competing in the club championships.

Have you met this feisty fella out on the course? Plovers can be pretty intimidating but their scare tactics are mostly a bluff to protect their family and rarely do they make contact with humans. Once chicks have spread their wings, their aggressiveness subsides. Plovers (or Hooded Lapwings) are protected so pleaseDon't antagonise the birds and avoid the nesting area if possible.
If you can’t avoid the area, try not to walk directly towards the birds or make eye contact with them.
Wearing a large hat when in their vicinity can also help, and... Don't destroy their nests as they will rebuild and be around longer!
