State, city gear up for Omicron arrival

Upstate, western New York are the focus of Hochul emergency orders

ity Health Commissioner Dr. Dave Chokshi was direct on Monday when asked about the possibility of Covid-19’s Omicron variant showing up in the city. “[W]e believe it will be a matter of days before Omicron is detected in the United States, and very likely in New York City as well,” he said at a press conference.

Chokshi’s boss, Mayor de Blasio, and Gov. Hochul weren’t preparing to wait; and in fact,

by Wednesday the first U.S. case was reported from a test conducted in San Francisco.

Closer to home, published reports said two cases have been reported in Ontario, Canada.

On Friday, Nov. 26, Hochul, under her emergency powers, signed a declaration to allow the Department of Health to limit nonessential and nonurgent procedures for hospitals or systems where the availability of inpatient beds falls below 10 percent of capacity “or as determined by the Department of Health based on regional and heath care utilization factors.”

The new protocols will take effect on Friday, Dec. 3, according to a statement on Hochul’s official website. They will be reassessed based on the latest Covid-19 data on Jan. 15. The executive order also will enable

New York State to acquire more quickly any critical supplies to combat the pandemic.

“So beginning on Dec. 3rd, elective procedures at these short-staffed hospitals will cease. And we’ll reassess that again, Jan. 15th,” Hochul said Monday afternoon, according to a transcript of her remarks viewed on her website.

Hochul said Albany is looking more at upstate regions than New York City.

“This is very targeted,” she said. “You have to look at bed capacity ... New York City, 28 percent. Long Island, 27 percent.

These areas can handle the individuals who are seeking medical attention at a hospital.

There is not a capacity issue there.”

As of Monday, however, the Finger Lakes region was at 9 percent and Western New York at 11.

“These are the areas that were targeted,” Hochul said.

Dr. David Battinelli, physician in chief at Northwell Health, told the Chronicle on Tuesday that the city appears ready for any contingency.

“We’re fine,” he said. “We weren’t necessarily expecting [Hochul’s declaration] right now, but we’d noticed that the vaccination rates were poor upstate and that the number of cases was beginning to increase.” He also said the cold weather Covid season is over-

lapping with flu season, and that Hochul may just have used the Omicron news in order to become more prepared.

“Also the flu vaccination rates are not that good, so this is not a terrible surprise,” he said. “If you look at the big picture, you could say we’re going to be worried about Omicron. The problem is upstate, we’re not even handling the current variant well. But in our area, we’re good. Capacity is good.

“We’ve only got 200 to 250 [Covid] patients throughout our entire system and our vaccination rate is good. We’re putting some special policies in place with regard to special quarantines from places where Omicron outbreaks seem to have taken hold. But it pretty much is business as usual.”

Hochul said Monday that essential procedures will continue.

“And people who need cancer treatment, mammograms, colonoscopies, have traumatic injuries, heart surgery, they will get the care they need,” she said. “Again, many of

those procedures to detect for cancer, mammograms, for example, colonoscopies, they also can be performed at other places other than hospitals. And we want to make sure that no one puts off critically important preventative procedures as well as happened during the pandemic, the first wave around and the second wave.”

On Monday Chokshi issued an updated mask advisory, saying that all New Yorkers are “encouraged” to wear masks indoors regardless of vaccination status.

“Let’s take steps now to stay safe, protect each other and prepare for the #OmicronVariant,” de Blasio tweeted on Monday morning.

Mayor-elect Eric Adams, in a video posted on Twitter, said Monday that he will be following Mayor de Blasio’s approach when he takes office on Jan. 1.

Howard Blech! Smell has residents worried After weeks of complaints, one HB grandmother is afraid it will kill her

Linda Miranti decorated most of her house for Christmas already but now she does not know if she will be able to have her family over for the holidays, or if she will even be there herself, because of a strong stench that has filled her home and wafts through the air around 88th and 89th streets in Howard Beach.

Starting around Nov. 10, Miranti’s home, especially her garage and the front of her house, has had a strong odor of what she thinks is methane.

She said it gives her migraines and nausea and makes her skin itch. “I’ve never felt like this before. I’ve been so sick,” said Miranti, a 75-year-old grandmother. “Everything is an effort. I can’t live like this.”

She has been sleeping on the couch in the back of her house just to escape the smells and her son has been pushing her to stay with him but she is reluctant to leave.

Miranti’s neighbors experience it too, but it is not as bad in their houses as it is in hers. When her nextdoor neighbor, Barbara Smith, walked into her house, she noticed the odor right away, despite all the candles lit and cleaning Miranti has

“How do you stay down here?”

Smith asked her. “I’m literally dying,” Miranti responded.

Miranti has lived in Howard Beach for 47 years and said she has never experienced anything like this. People are used to smells from the nearby bay but this is different, she said. She and Smith wonder if it

could be related to the work being done near Spring Creek Park off of 165th Avenue.

Miranti has made several calls to 311 that were referred to the Department of Environmental Protection, and National Grid and the FDNY have come but no gas leaks or sewer blockages were detected.

Miranti is not alone in her persis-

tence. Nicole Bruno lives on the next block and has been experiencing the same thing.

“I’m going on four weeks of calling multiple times, as well as most of the people on my block,” said Bruno. “They just don’t come or can’t fix it.”

“I can’t even open a window. If I do, it absorbs the whole house and

you get headaches. It’s disgusting — you shouldn’t have to smell sewage,” said Bruno. “You know, all this money we pay to live here.”

Both Bruno and Smith took to Facebook, the Howard Beach Moms and Howard Beach Dads pages respectively, and found that many more people in the area have noticed, too.

Bruno worries that this extends beyond just the air. She has noticed the water in her porcelin bathtub not running clear anymore. “I have little kids,” she said. “I don’t want to have to worry if they drink something.”

She, too, has made several 311 requests that were referred to the DEP. “I just called again earlier today because they were supposed to come yesterday and they never showed up, but they said they closed out the case,” she said on Tuesday.

Some of Miranti’s requests have been closed too, but others remain open.

“It’s a big quality-of-life issue and the city should put more effort into finding out what’s wrong,” said Bruno.

The DEP and National Grid did not give a response in time for publication but representatives from Q both are looking into the issue.

Car thefts doubled in last few weeks

Six are stolen in one day, as theft of tires and wheels also ticks up

Grand larceny of automobiles has doubled locally in recent weeks and theft of automobile parts has ticked up as well.

From Nov. 22 to Nov. 28, there were 13 car thefts in the 106th Precinct, which covers Ozone Park, South Ozone Park, Lindenwood and Howard Beach.

That is the most in one week since 2005.

For the same week last year, there were only five.

It is a jump compared to the past few years for the precinct which only saw an average of about 99 per year from 2016 to 2019. For the year to date, there have been 191 compared to 171 at this point last year.

There were six GLAs last Wednesday alone. According to the 106th Precinct’s Twitter, four of those cars were stolen in the span of less than two hours, between 4:30 p.m. and 6:20 p.m. They were running and unattended.

For all of Queens South, there were 50 in

the most recent week recorded, compared to 21 in the same week last year. The week before, there were 43.

Last week, the 13 GLAs in the 106th accounted for the most out of all the Queens South precincts, followed by 10 in the 103rd.

The uptick is not new, however, because this time last year still saw more. For the whole year to date, Queens South is at 1,056 compared to 1,143 for last year.

On Twitter, the 106th said, “NCO officers were out in the community spreading the word on the importance of turning off your vehicle’s engine and removing the key from the ignition when exiting.”

Grand larcenies have also ticked up, with thieves targeting rims and wheels.

The precinct tweeted, “There have been several thefts of tires and rims by thieves targeting Honda vehicles, especially the 18” factory alloy wheels. All vehicle owners should consider purchasing wheel locks to add a layer Q of deterrence and protect your property.”

Covid testing for school staff drops

Critics question why DOE has all but ended teacher swabs on campus

Since all school staff have been required to get vaccinated, the amount of in-school Covid-19 testing has all but ceased for building personnel, according to city data.

On Tuesday, only 26 teachers were tested citywide, compared to 6,661 students.

Only 33 percent of children ages 5 to 17 are vaccinated citywide, according to city data, so they continue to be regularly tested but many people would like to see rigourous testing of teachers to continue, too.

Ariela Rothstein, a teacher in Elmhurst, said she got a text from a colleague on Nov. 16 saying that the Department of Education changed its policy for staff testing and that they would no longer be included in the weekly surveillance tests. She said there was no notice from the school or the DOE and that she has not been notified of testing going on during work hours since.

“It’s very frustrating because we have family members, some of whom can’t be vaccinated — some are elders, some are little kids. So we’re all getting tested ourselves to help make sure we’re not bringing it home but we’re having to do that on our own time,” said Rothstein.

“Staff members with young kids are having to find ways to get tested and just, think

about the drain — we’re already really overworked and then we have to find a site that is open and gives results with a good turnaround time,” she said.

Rothstein said she had to get tested at a tent in her neighborhood when she was exhibiting symptoms but did not get her results back for five days. (They were negative.) When she would get tested at her job, she would get results in 24 hours.

“We need an increase of testing, not a decrease,” she said.

According to the DOE, it did provide “courtesy testing” to staff who were not fully innoculated to ensure compliance with the state mandate and now that all staff must be fully vaccinated, it is “adjusting” the courtesy program to make it available to all.

The agency plans to send more details to the school communities soon.

The testing program is designed to stop widespread community transmission, the DOE stated in an email. Officials believe it is working since only three schools have had to close so far this year.

The parent group PRESS NYC has been compiling data provided by the Department of Health and DOE and presenting it in a more useful and accessible way, helping to expose some of the big trends like the sudden drop in staff testing. The activists’ web-

site states they “hold the DOE, the Mayor, and the education press accountable.”

The group does not agree with those who make the case that “not that many schools or classrooms closed,” it said in a tweet. “The bigger question is: can kids and staff be better protected? Yes, they can!”

Jennifer Jennings, a professor of sociology and public affairs at Princeton who consulted on PRESS NYC’s data, explained that the information provided by the city agencies can not always be downloaded and had to be scraped in order to be analyzed in a more “meaningful” way.

“There are lots of folks that are interested in, without judgment, just understanding what’s going on,” said Jennings. “And it’s been very hard to to do that.”

“It’s been difficult for anyone who works in public health to understand the logic underlying the in-school testing strategy,” she said.

“While vaccines are very good at addressing severe disease and death, they don’t do as well on preventing transmission and so we still need to be finding people who may be asymptomatic or pre-symptomatic, isolating them and stopping the spread.”

Jennings and Rothstein shared concern over low opt-in rates for student testing in schools, as well.

“To contrast it with what universities

have been doing, Princeton last year tested everyone twice a week on campus and continues to do so,” said Jennings.

Rothstein mentioned that other school districts in different states have opt-out policies instead of opt-in.

“They say everyone who is unvaccinated is getting tested unless you signed a form saying that you don’t want it,” she said.

“We teach in a building that doesn’t have an HVAC system ... it has a heating system that is a hundred years old. We had the windows open today and it was freezing, but that’s all the ventilation that we have,” she said on Tuesday.

“So you know, testing is just one more measure.”

According to the DOE, to be eligible for participation in the surveillance testing program requires students be unvaccinated and have consent. Over 91 percent of schools are meeting their 10 percent testing threshold, the department said.

“We have the country’s largest school surveillance testing program for eligible students and we provide courtesy testing for staff,” said DOE spokesperson Nathaniel Styer in an email. “Now that all school staff are fully vaccinated, we are issuing updated, uniform testing guidelines for all staff Q who wish to participate.”

Merry and bright with weekend festivities

The holiday season kicks off in Woodhaven, Richmond Hill, Ozone Park and Howard Beach this weekend with Christmas tree lightings that will be sure to spread cheer all month long and decorate street corners from Cross Bay Boulevard to Jamaica Avenue.

On Friday at 6 p.m., the Woodhaven Business Improvement District is holding its annual Christmas tree lighting on the corner of Forest Parkway and Jamaica Avenue.

Ring in the season with hot cocoa, singing and dancing and pictures with Santa, who has a busy weekend coming up in South Queens. For more information, find the Woodhaven BID on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter.

On Saturday, the Howard Beach Lindenwood Civic Association is hosting its tree-lighting ceremony alongside Lisena Landscaping at 4 p.m at the Welcome to Howard Beach sign on Cross Bay Blvd.

There will be live performances, hot cocoa and treats. Every family will receive reindeer food and a special key

for Santa to deliver presents.

Also on Friday, the Richmond HillSouth Ozone Park Lions Club is presenting its third annual tree lighting at 5 p.m. at 133rd Street and Liberty Avenue.

The Ozone Park Block Association will be holding its fourth annual Christmas tree lighting on Saturday at the Living Word Christian Fellowship in Ozone Park. There will be free refreshments and photos with Santa. From 1 to 4 p.m. they will have a ceremony for individuals with disabilities. Then, starting at 6 p.m., they will have another ceremony for the general public.

The highlight of the evening will be the gifting of a prosthetic arm to a 6-yearold boy who lost one of his as a toddler.

The owner of the prosthetics company is donating the equipment necessary for the boy for the next 12 years.

The Queens County GOP announced last week that Keith Sullivan, a lawyer from Rockaway, has been appointed a Republican commissioner of the city Board of Elections.

Sullivan is a lifelong resident of the Rockaways and a partner at Sullivan & Galleshaw, LLP, where he handles personal injury and criminal defense matters.

He is also chairman of the board at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy in Belle Harbor, a law professor at Pace University, a board member at the Teddy Atlas Foundation and former deputy commissioner for the New York State Athletic Commission, where he regulated boxing, mixed martial arts and wrestling. He previously served on Community Board 14 as well.

He regularly appears on cable news networks as a guest legal analyst.

“I am honored to accept this appointment to fulfill such an important civic role,” Sullivan said in a prepared statement.

“I look forward to bringing a bi-partisan approach to the job and ensuring that all New York City residents have fair and equal access to vote. That is the bedrock of a free

P We need a new direction for schools EDITORIAL

hey say that personnel is policy when it comes to a new chief executive assembling his team. Incoming Mayor Eric Adams has a chance to break with the policies of his predecessor across the board, and we hope he will do so in a major way in key areas including crime-fighting, business regulation, transportation and, at least as vital as any of those, education. Wednesday’s announcement that Schools Chancellor Meisha Porter will be stepping down at the end of the year, as inevitable as it was, highlights Adams’ opportunity to reverse the most damaging approaches Mayor de Blasio took toward education while building on the positive ones.

The main thing that has to be done is to end the war on excellence. In fact, just about everything stems from that. De Blasio, determined to bring more equity to education, particularly along racial lines, did what he could to equalize student outcomes. But other than pre-K and 3-K, he pursued that theoretically noble goal not by trying to improve the education of the most challenged students but by trying to reduce the opportunities available to the most successful ones. And his schools chiefs put those plans into practice.

Throughout his tenure, de Blasio and his chancellors did whatever they could to thwart charter schools, especially Success Academy, where excellence is the rule and the students are primarily members of the minority groups de Blasio insists he wants to raise up. His

Department of Education keeps failing to provide space for Success schools as required by law, even today. See this week’s letter to the editor from four Queens students for more on the latest. Adams says he supports charter schools and we trust he will keep his word.

Last year, citing the pandemic, de Blasio’s DOE eliminated screening for middle schools, effectively reducing the quality of the best ones. This year it has kept families waiting until the absolute last minute for information on applying to traditionally screened middle and high schools. We expect Adams to be more competent.

De Blasio, and his former Chancellor Richard Carranza in particular, also tried all they could to eliminate the Specialized High School Admissions Test for the so-called “elite eight,” such as the legendary Stuyvesant and Bronx Science. Only state law stopped them. And any effort they put into making sure more Black and Latino students get to take the SHSAT and enroll failed to produce results. Adams wants to expand opportunities for all students to get into a specialized school, possibly even by establishing more of them.

De Blasio recently announced the end of the city’s Gifted and Talented programs, to be replaced by weaker accelerated curricula.

Adams has said he supports G&T and can reverse that decision.

There’s much we want Adams to reverse when it comes to education, and we hope his choice as chancellor will reflect plans to do so.

Ticket these cars Dear Editor: I have been taking walks almost every day in the Douglaston area where I live. It really annoys me to see cars parked by a fire hydrant or parked totally blocking the crosswalk lines. I notice this every day that I walk: often the same cars parked illegally in the same spots. One car has made his or her spot on a curve on the corner of a block where there is no spot at all.

I realize the police have other priorities rather than to drive around my neighborhood ticketing cars parked illegally but these folks that I see park illegally all the time perhaps feel safe about parking anywhere, knowing they’ll never get a ticket. The same holds true for drivers making illegal right or left turns through red lights, especially by the Douglaston Plaza shopping center, and speeding through stop signs since there are no cameras.

I’d love to see a ticket on a car parked in one of the aforementioned places one of these days.

steps. He pretended not to see us, but we’re pretty sure he did because there were a whole lot of us there that day. We felt dispirited when the mayor didn’t even look at us.

Later, we got a temporary school. But, now, here we are again. Our temporary space expires at the end of the school year. The mayor has been promising us permanent space for years, but his promise is unfulfilled. We don’t know where we’ll be for next year, or if we’ll even have a school. It’s heartbreaking. It feels like children having no homes to live in.

Some of us have been at Success Academy Far Rockaway since kindergarten or first grade.

All we want is to continue here. We don’t want to commute an hour to continue our education at Success Academy.

The other option is going to a Department of Education district school nearby. But according to the DOE website, in 2019, 52 percent of Queens district school students passed the state English test and the same number passed the math test. At our school, 84 percent of students passed English and 94 percent passed math.

Acting ahead of time, Gov. Hochul declared a state of emergency, accruing to herself vast powers to override laws if needed and to prevent hospitals from doing nonessential surgeries if they become crowded. Fine, though we hope that won’t become necessary.

The city Health Department reinstated its advisory that everyone, vaccinated or not, wear masks indoors.

Fine, though compliance is mixed.

There are signs Omicron may be a less harmful variant. That’s our hope, that the virus weakens over time, like the flu did. It’s not going away. We can only wait and see what’s next.

Success Academy pushes us to want to learn every day and has helped our academic careers grow tremendously. Plus, we get to participate in activities and clubs for sports, chess and debate.

The mayor has said that all kids deserve a chance. To grow and develop crucial skills. To build a brighter and better future for the next generations. He wants to build a future that is more fair and inclusive. Last month, he stated that, “so many of our kids too often saw their skills and abilities overlooked.” So where is our chance? Our chance to learn. Our chance to succeed. We should be able to receive the finest education and that is what Success Academy Far Rockaway provides for us.

Hotel extension for Ida vics Queens families who were displaced due to flooding from Hurricane Ida have been granted an extension to remain in the Radisson JFK Hotel instead of being forced to relocate to Brooklyn.

Con Edison and National Grid both offered advice on how to save this winter.

Man found dead on LIE Police discovered a dead man on the Long Island Expressway Nov. 27.

The unidentified man was found at 3:30 p.m. on the eastbound roadway at Exit 23. The exit lies beneath a pedestrian walkway over the highway, which connects 136th Street in Queensboro Hill on either side.

The man had “severe body trauma,” police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Some media outlets reported that the man was dismembered, with the New York Post saying body parts were found

“strewn” across the LIE. No arrests have been made, and the investigation is being led by the NYPD Collision Investigation Squad.

The deceased remains unidentified at this time, police said.

Three-term Dem. congressman ran for state seat once before in ’06

Constituents have been expecting it for a while, but Rep. Tom Suozzi (D-Nassau, Suffolk, Queens) officially announced his candidacy for governor Nov. 29.

“Everything I have done in my career has prepared me for this particular job at this particular time,” he said in his campaign video.

The three-term congressman launched his campaign two days after publicly declining Mayor-elect Eric Adams’ offer to be a city deputy mayor. In a tweet, Suozzi said he believes the best way to help Adams and New York City is in elected office.

Suozzi is expected to face incumbent Gov. Kathy Hochul, state Attorney General Letitia James and Public Advocate Jumaane Williams in the Democratic primary. He could also face Mayor de Blasio, who has been hinting that he may run for the role.

Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-Suffolk), whose district shares a border with Suozzi’s, is running on the Republican line.

The gubernatorial run will be the second for Suozzi. He sought the Democratic nomination in 2006, but lost the primary to eventual winner Eliot Spitzer.

Suozzi has been in elected office since 1993, when he won the Glen Cove mayoral race. His father, Joseph Suozzi, and uncle, Vincent Suozzi, were mayors of that city before him.

Suozzi served as Nassau county executive from 2002 to 2009. Despite serving two terms, he lost this third term re-election bid to Republican Ed Mangano. Suozzi challenged Mangano again for the seat in 2013, but lost a second time.

“I like to call myself a common sense Democrat,” Suozzi said in his video. “Politicians are too focused on being politically correct ... The far right and the far left have gone too far and they’re stopping us from

Suozzi has received some negative online feedback following his announcement, with some raising concerns that his bid for governor would leave his seat vulnerable to a Republican candidate. Republican George Santos claimed that he is “abandoning the district.”

In the 2020 congressional election, Suozzi appeared to have lost his re-election bid to Santos before absentee ballots were counted. When the race was certified, Suozzi won with an 11.6 percent lead.

Santos is running for the seat a second time. On the Democratic line, Melanie D’Arrigo, who primaried Suozzi in 2020, declared herself the “clear frontrunner” now that the incumbent is pulling himself from Q the 2022 congressional race.

Free internet bill in Council A bill submitted by outgoing City Councilman Ben Kallos (D-Manhattan) would require residential landlords with more than 10 units to provide free internet; and would require the city to subsidize some landlords’ conversions.

Kallos’ bill was referred to the Committee on Housing and Buildings on Oct. 7. It would require all new housing to be constructed with internet access, and all existing housing to receive broadband internet within three years.

While noting utilities are defined and regulated by state and federal government,

he said, “to most New Yorkers, what makes something a utility is whether it comes with your apartment ...” On his website, Kallos linked the lack of internet availability to the Covid-19 pandemic. He said people needed to use the internet to schedule or find vaccine appointments. “[T]his pandemic has shown that the internet is now a necessity,” he said.

The city would offer funds to landlords “subject to appropriation” with projected city budget deficits of between $4 and $5 Q billion for at least three years out.

New law keeps gas canisters from kids Addabbo-Pheffer Amato lead on ‘whip-its’; family leave, car exhaust also OK’d

When a constituent called state Sen. Joe Addabbo Jr. (D-Howard Beach) about discarded drug paraphernalia littering a road near her home, he decided to check it out for himself.

“I went down to a street off of Cross Bay Boulevard in Ozone Park and I saw these canisters,” he said.

The canisters were discarded containers of nitrous oxide gas which, in the small metal tubes like those seen by the senator, are typically used by bakers and cooks to prepare fresh whipped cream.

The ones in the street had been used as whip-its, in which people discharge the gas and inhale it to get a temporary high.

“It wasn’t drug paraphernalia, not in the usual sense. But they were being used as a drug,” Addabbo said.

The incident moved Addabbo and state Rep. Stacey Pheffer Amato (D-Rockaway Beach) to introduce companion bills in their respective chambers outlawing the sale of the canisters to anyone under the age of 21. Addabbo was informed at the end of October that while Gov. Hochul did not sign the bill, it became law after she declined to veto it.

Addabbo on Tuesday told the Chronicle that the canisters can be purchased in cooking or restaurant supply businesses, where they are

traditionally the color of the bare metal cylinder; but they also can be purchased in small grocery stores and bodegas.

“And 16- and 14-year-olds know where to get them,” Addabbo said. “A few days after I was informed by the Governor’s Office that it had become law, I began finding hundreds of these canisters on 156th Avenue and Cross Bay Boulevard. A lot of them were green with fancy lettering. That tells me they are being marketed to children. No baker or cook is going to use those neon green canisters. They say ‘Whip-it’ on the side! That’s definitely targeting younger kids.”

He also said that since the canisters are legally available for home use, children can wrongfully assume they are safe.

Nitrous oxide, or N2O in scientific nomenclature, is used medically as an anesthetic in places like dentists’ offices, and is often referred to as laughing gas. Long-term effects of abuse can include damage to the brain and internal organs, according to the website of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

The agency says inhalants are often among the first drugs that young children use; and that one in five children report having used inhalants by eighth grade.

Addabbo added that what he particularly loved about the outcome is that the matter began with a constituent phone call.

“It originated as a constituent complaint and became state law,” he said. “That’s a perfect picture of how state government is meant to

work when it works right.”

Addabbo said his constituents and the state also can chalk up wins with two pieces of legislation Hochul did sign in recent weeks.

The first is a bill that adds siblings to the list of relatives who can receive paid time off to care for a sick family member, which he sponsored. The second penalizes not only drivers who alter their car and motorcycle exhaust systems to make excessive noise but the mechanics who do the work and state inspection stations that ignore the modifications when passing motor vehicles, of which he was an eager co-sponsor.

“When we passed paid family leave, which I was an advocate for, we included parents, grandparents, stepfathers — we included all these individuals,” Addabbo said. “We left out siblings.”

Those taking paid leave can receive up to two-thirds of their salaries from a state kitty funded by payroll deductions. Their jobs are preserved, and their employers can either hold on to the person’s salary or use it to hire a temporary replacement.

“This is friendly to small businesses as well,” he said.

Addabbo said under the muffler law, a station that passes altered exhaust systems three times can lose its state license to conduct vehiQ cle inspections.

Michael Henry, a commercial litigation attorney from Astoria, is running for the state Attorney General’s Office.

Henry, a Republican candidate, is campaigning to tackle crime, corruption and the coronavirus crisis.

“The reason I looked into running is that I saw what was going on with the one-party controlled state and government’s disastrous response to the Covid crisis,” said Henry.

“I’m seeing that the office is heavily being used, attorney general after attorney general, to become the next governor or to weaponize the office against political opponents while there are a lot of issues in New York State that need to be addressed.”

Henry believes that ousted Gov. Cuomo used the office to parade himself as a national hero and thinks the former executive is a “pandemic profiteer.”

“This is something that affected everybody,” said Henry. “People’s parents were put in a nursing home and they wouldn’t learn of their deaths until days later.”

The solution: Repeal bail reform and replace it with something better, according to Henry. Get people in drug rehab treatment instead for 12 to 16 months instead of jail. Get help for people who are severely mentally ill, but do not let them roam the streets.

“They are not only endangering other people, they are also endangering themselves,” said Henry. “They are talking to themselves and they are going to freeze to death in the winter. They need help, they need medication and they need to be monitored.”

Henry understands that he has an uphill battle as a Republican in a blue state, but has no problem reaching across the aisle.

“You have to find a way to get through to communities that haven’t traditionally voted Republican,” said Henry. “Voters might not change their affiliation, but they might this time around because things are so bad.”

As to his legal expertise, Henry said, “I was in management in the mortgage industry and ... I have done some asylum work in the Asian community for people who were persecuted for practicing Christianity or Q Catholicism in China.”

The Mass then began with Cardinal Dolan greeting the people and inviting Archbishop Pierre to read an apostolic letter. After the reading, Brennan showed the letter to the College of Consultors, the diocese chancellor, the curia and then members of the congregation.

Brennan then sat in the Cathedra, the Bishop’s teaching chair, and was presented with his crozier, or a hooked staff. The cathedra now bears Brennan’s coat of arms.

Afterward, he greeted various representatives of the diocese, both clergy and laity. Q

Bishop Robert Brennan on Tuesday was installed as the eighth bishop of the Diocese of Brooklyn at a Mass at the Co-Cathedral of St. Joseph in the Prospect Heights section of Brooklyn.

Timothy Cardinal Dolan, archbishop of New York, and Archbishop Christophe Pierre, apostolic nuncio to the United States of America, officiated the Installation Mass.

Brennan, who led the Diocese of Columbus, Ohio, since 2019, was named by Pope Francis to succeed Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio back in September.

Brennan, 59, was born in the Bronx and grew up in Lindenhurst, LI. He was ordained as a priest in the Diocese of Rockville Centre on Long Island in 1989.

The diocese serves approximately 1.5 million Catholics in the boroughs of Queens and Brooklyn. DiMarzio was appointed bishop by Pope St. John Paul II back in 2003. He submitted a letter of resignation upon turning 75 back in 2019 under church law. The pontiff formally accepted the resignation prior to appointing Brennan.

“The Church which ‘goes forth’ is a community of missionary disciples who take the first step, who are involved and supportive, who bear fruit and rejoice,” Brennan said in a statement issued by the diocese.

“An evangelizing community knows that the Lord has taken the initiative, he has loved us first, and therefore we can move forward, boldly take the initiative, go out to others, seek those who have fallen away, stand at the crossroads and welcome the outcast.”

There were 45 bishops, including two cardinals, more than 300 priests and 100 deacons in attendance for the celebration.

Local pols weigh in on 19 months for threats disgraced THHS teach after U.S. Capitol riot

Student journalists at the prestigious Townsend Harris High School helped expose teacher and baseball coach Joseph Canzoneri, who allegedly engaged in “numerous inappropriate acts,” involving having sexual intercourse with a former student who had just graduated. They also revealed that he remained at the school following the report and came into contact with students during that time.

Due to tenure protections, Canzoneri was reinstated but the principal at Townsend Harris refused to give him class assignments and worked with the Department of Education to remove him from the school.

The DOE says it is bound by state law to follow the hearing officer’s orders, and have since been able to reassign him outs i d e t h e s c h o ol b u i l d i n g , a s of mid-November.

“This employee was immediately removed from classrooms once these deeply disturbing allegations came to light and will never be permitted back in Townsend Harris again,” a DOE spokes-

person said in a statement.

Local politicians have weighed in on the saga, too.

Assemblywoman Nily Rozic (D-Fresh Meadows), an alum of the school, said in a statement, “It is shocking that it took the Department of Education this long to act to remove this dangerous teacher. The safety of our students should be front and center, always.”

Councilman James Gennaro (D-Hillcrest) said in a statement, “In light of the findings of the SCI report and the gravity of the charges against Canzoneri, I find it unconscionable that Canzoneri was returned in September to THHS, where although he was no longer assigned to a teaching position, he had access to students. This was an outrageously insensitive and dangerous decision by the DOE, and I condemn the judgment of the DOE that put additional students at risk for sexual predation.”

“I congratulate the student reporters of The Classic for their service to the THHS com munity in revealing the DOE’s dangerous and unconscionable lapse in judgement,” Gennaro stated. Q

A Ridgewood man has been sentenced to 19 months in federal prison for threatening to harm and murder United States senators and members of the House of Representatives two days after the Jan. 6 storming of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, DC. Brendan Hunt, 37, was arrested by the FBI on Jan. 19 and convicted at a jury trial in April. He was sentenced Nov. 22 by U.S. District Judge Pamela Chen.

“We will not tolerate threats to members of the United States Congress or calls to overthrow our democratically elected government,” said Breon Peace, U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of New York in a statement issued by his office. “Not only will we investigate and vigorously prosecute these crimes, but today’s sentence sends a clear message that those who seek to harm our representatives and bring chaos to our democracy will be punished.”

On Jan. 8, Hunt posted a video titled “KILL YOUR SENATORS” that included the summary “Slaughter them all.” In the video, he made additional threats. “[W]e need to go back to the U.S. Capitol when all of the Senators and a lot of the Representatives are back there, and this

time we have to show up with our guns.

And we need to slaughter these m-----f----s.” He also advocated for the violent overthrow of the federal government.

“Our government at this point is basically a handful of traitors ... so what you need to do is take up arms, get to D.C., probably the inauguration ... so called inauguration of this m-----f-----g communist Joe Biden ... [T]hat’s probably the best time to do this, get your guns, show up to D.C., and literally just spray these m-----f-----s ... put some bullets in their f------g heads. If anybody has a gun, give me it, I’ll go there myself and shoot them and kill them ... [W]e have to take out these Senators and then replace them with actual patriots. This is a [Zionist Occupied Government].”

The next day Hunt posted another video. “[t]hose 100 Senators should really be afraid about going into public now ... We have the first amendment ... And we have the second as well. There are really only a hundred of these weakling Senators. They are mass murdering psychopaths who are intent on our destruction, and they form an illegitimate government. Every single one Q of them just needs to go.”

Battinelli said variants are to be expected.

“There’s no question about that, given that this is a pandemic and until everyone on the entire planet is either infected or immunized, the virus is going to continue to replicate and is likely to mutate,” he said.

“Mutations, of course, are always assumed to be with respect to transmissibility, not virulence. I think some of the early data — and we’ll have to see — suggests that the cases we’re seeing in South Africa with Omicron currently are not particularly severe. Hochul on Monday said New York State’s total capacity of available beds has dropped 4 percent since early August. Seventy percent of those losses are upstate.

Good air quality for the ozone is 54 parts per billion or lower. Moderate air quality is 55 to 70 ppb. The national ambient air quality standard for ground-level ozone is 70 ppb.

A poor Air Quality Index score for groundlevel ozone was based on 8-hour days when the air quality was unhealthy for sensitive groups (71 to 85 ppb); unhealthy (86 to 105 ppb); very unhealthy (106 to 200 ppb) or hazardous (200 ppb +) from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. and from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.

Queens, however, did pass its Particle Pollution Annual report for 2020, according to the American Lung Association.

Particle pollution, also known as particulate matter, is a term for a mixture of solid and liquid droplets suspended in the air. PM becomes a problem when it is in high concentrations, which often occurs near busy roads, campfires or hot humid days with stagnant air. Exposure to high levels of PM can lead to strokes, heart attacks, asthma attacks and premature death.

The national ambient air quality standard for

PM is 12 micrograms per cubic meter. expressed as ug/m3. Anything above 12.1 ug/ m3 failed. A good PM level is 0 to 12 ug/m3, a moderate PM level is 12.1 to 35.4 ug/m3, a PM level that is unhealthy for sensitive groups is 35.5 to 55.4 ug/m3, an unhealthy PM level is 55.5 to 150.4 ug/m, very unhealthy PM level is 150.5 to 250.4 ug/m3 and hazardous PM levels are greater than 250.5 ug/m3.

Still, when the report data were compiled from 2017 to 2019, there were 36,688 cases of pediatric asthma, 168,232 cases of adult asthma, 103,438 cases of COPD, 1,331 cases of lung cancer, 140,205 cases of cardiovascular disease and at least 655,226 “ever smokers” or people who have smoked at least 100 cigarettes or cigars over their lifetime, in Queens, according to the American Lung Assocation. Of the 2,253,858 people who lived in the borough when the report was done, 1,693,723 were minorities and 245,941 were impoverished or lived below the poverty line.

James wants the EPA to propose stronger standards for emissions from new on-road heavy-duty trucks and engines for model year 2027 and beyond.

“The EPA needs to protect the health of all New Yorkers by putting the brakes on smogforming pollution from heavy-duty trucks,” said James.

Astoria key in new state energy deals Two projects, if approved, would bring clean energy to Queens sites

Astoria is slated to be the southern terminus of what Gov. Hochul is calling the two largest energy projects in the state in half a century.

Hochul announced Tuesday that the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority has finalized contracts with Clean Path New York LLC for its Clean Path NY project; and with HQ Energy Services Inc. for its Champlain Hudson Power Express project.

The Clean Path project, if approved by state regulators, would bring solar- and wind-generated electricity from a substation in Delaware County and connect with the city at the Rainey power substation located just north of the Roosevelt Island Bridge.

The Champlain Hudson Power Express would bring hydroelectric power from HydroQuébec in Canada through power lines that would run beneath Lake Champlain and both under and near stretches of the Hudson River before connecting to the massive Con Edison complex on 20th Avenue which hosts a number of energy companies.

“This announcement not only accelerates our pace to achieving the goal for having 70 percent of New York State’s energy to come from renewable resources, we’re also creating sustainable jobs, reducing our dependence on fossil fuels, and paving the way for cleaner air

and a healthier future for all New Yorkers,” Hochul said in a statement on her official website. “I’m proud that New York continues to lead the nation with innovative green energy initiatives and has set a global example of what must be done to take on climate change.”

The governor said aside from greenhouse gas reductions and quality improvements, the projects would mean $8.2 billion in economic development across the state, including investments in disadvantaged communities.

The contracts have been submitted to the state’s Public Service Commission for approval, and are subject to a public comment period that will run through Feb. 7, 2022. The petition and contracts are available on the Department of Public Service’s website at https://on.ny. gov/3ro5DMR under Case Number 15-E-0302, where comments can be submitted. If the contracts are approved, the Champlain route is expected to be producing power in 2025, and the Clean Path in 2027.

Mayor de Blasio, in a statement accompanying Hochul’s release, was supportive. “If the largest city in the nation can rely on clean energy for power, any place can,” he said.

The environmental community was not unanimous in its response. Julie Tighe, president of the New York League of Conservation Voters, supported it in Hochul’s statement.

the state’s target of 70 percent renewable energy by 2030 and today’s announcement of the signing of Tier 4 contracts between NYSERDA and developers is a big step forward to keep us on track,” Tighe said. In regard to the digging that would have to take place in and near the Hudson, a NYLCV spokesman said in an email that the state still must do its due diligence.

“These projects, like any construction project, require permitting from the Department of Environmental Conservation that includes comprehensive reviews for sensitive habitats, among other considerations, and requires mitigation measures to minimize the environmental impact of any construction project,” the spokesman said in an email. “The State holds developers to strict environmental standards, and we are confident that New Yorkers will enjoy enormous benefits for the climate and local air quality that these projects represent as they help us move off fossil fuel.”

Riverkeeper, an organization dedicated to the preservation and rehabilitation of the Hudson and other waterways, referred the Chronicle to a statement on its website from September.

The state Attorney General’s Office has secured $5.1 million against Park Avenue Stem Cell Clinic, an assumed name for Image Plastic Surgery LLC in Manhattan, for deceptive practices that scammed patients out of thousands through false advertising.

At tor ney General Tish James also ordered the defendants to end their practices, which charged consumers $4,000 per procedure and up to $20,000 for multiple procedures using the patients’ stem cells to treat lupus, Parkinson’s disease and Lou Gehrig’s disease from 2015 to June 2019.

While there is no breakdown of how many and where in Queens some patients were from, there were indeed victims from the World’s Borough who were allegedly deceived by the clinic located at 346 East 51 St. and Dr. Joel B. Singer, a cosmetic, plastic and reconstructive surgeon and managing doctor, according to the AG’s Office.

The AG’s Office announced the judgment on Nov. 24, describing the clinic as specializing in stem cell therapy using mesenchymal stem cells to treat nonsurgical orthopedic conditions such as arthritis of the knees, hips, shoulders and spine.

Other treatments include auto-immune and neurological disorders, stem cell face lifts, hair restoration, erectile dysfunction, urologic disease and cardiac and pulmonary diseases.

MSCs are adult stem cells that can come from human or animal sources and could become bone, cartilage, muscle or fat tissue, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine. Stem cells are cells with the ability of self-renewal, which is why they have clinical applications for neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s disease or autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid

arthritis and are often a subject of modern research.

Despite the potential of stem cells for future use in treating diseases, there is not enough “adequate scientific substantiation” that they are effective in healing the aforementioned diseases, according to the AG’s Office.

One scientific report by Nature.com in 2019 found that despite MSCs potential to help with many diseases, once obtained and even cryopreserved, they tend to lose their efficacy once thawed. The NLM said there was not a large sample size of stem cells or MSCs for researchers to fully determine the full scope of either as a treatment for diseases.

“Misleading New Yorkers who are seeking treatment for serious and potentially life-threatening medical conditions is unlawful and an affront to our societal values,” said James in a statement. “Consumers place a great deal of trust in health care professionals and should receive accurate information when undergoing medical treatments, but Park Avenue Stem Cell and its managing doctor violated that trust in an effort to line their pockets at the expense of patients’ health.”

In the U.S., the only stem cell-based product approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, blood-forming stem cells, has been used for a narrow range of conditions. Judge Andrew Borrok of New York County Supreme Court also ordered that the defendants not market the therapy as a cure.

“We will continue to investigate these types of clinics that shamelessly add to the suffering of these consumers by charging them thousands of dollars for treatments that they know are unproven,” said James in a statement.

Breast Imaging Center at Bayside location named for longtime CEO, wife Main Street Radiology honored its original CEO, Dr. William G. Wolff, with the dedication of the Karen and William Wolff Women’s Imaging Center.

Dr. Wolff’s radiology career started in 1976 when he joined Radiology Associates of Main Street. In 1998 he became CEO of the new outpatient imaging office which would be known as Main Street Radiology (MSR). MSR has since expanded and continues to serve the Queens community with five locations.

After the unveiling of the dedicated plaque, Dr. Wolff attributed his success to his wife Karen. “She’s the reason for all of this success.” Both Karen and Dr. Wolff were the foundation and driving force behind Main Street Radiology’s growing success, expanding it not only in size and scope but also in the quality of care that it provides, refusing to trade one for the other.

1 million miles and counting at USPS Andrew Fontanetta, a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service, recently was honored on Nov. 23 for having driven more than 1 million miles in his 30-year career without a traffic accident.

Fontanetta was recognized by USPS leadership and received a plaque from the National Safety Council in a ceremony hosted at the Forest Hills Post Office on Queens Boulevard — ZIP code 11375.

“I am proud to work for the Postal Service and have been able to raise my family with this job,” Fontanetta said in a press release. “I have provided a stable life for them. I like when people get excited about packages arriving. Both kids and adults get excited when I pull up.

They are usually tracking it. Being on the route for so long, I know when the addresses are incorrect or missing anything. I have been on the same route for 30 years. Over the years, I have seen a lot of people come and go.”

by Nilsa Henriquez Approximately 70 million Americans will see a 5.9 percent increase in their Social Security benefits and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments in 2022. Federal benefit rates increase when the cost-of-living rises, as measured by the Department of Labor’s Consumer Price Index (CPI-W).

The CPI-W rises when inflation increases, leading to a higher cost-ofliving. This change means prices for goods and services, on average, are a

little more expensive, so the cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) helps to offset these costs.

We will mail COLA notices throughout the month of December to retirement, survivors and disability beneficiaries, SSI recipients and representative payees.

But, if you want to know your new benefit amount sooner, you can securely obtain your Social Security COLA notice online using the Message Center in your my Social Security account at ssa.gov/ myaccount. You can access this information in early December prior to the mailed notice.

In certain certa ways the unplanned intermission has led to pleasant surprises, Sudhalter Su udhalt said.

“I’m grateful we had the interim period,” she said. Performing online led “I to “a different dimension of music,” one that she described as a “deep, ssoul-searching” experience.

The programs bring together professional musicians, students of jazz, music educators and even serious hobbyists, all of whom enjoy jamming together.

And now the sessions continue to be live-streamed.

“Nobody ever thought of that,” Sudhalter said. “It’s beautiful. One makes me appreciate the other.”

During the shutdown, the sessions turned into a worldwide venture, with over ove 200 musicians from a dozen countries participating participatin in the virtual jams.

“It was so interesting,” intere Sudhalter said of the time a group of musicians from South Africa joined in.

“They have a different concept, a different approach” to music, she said. “You felt like a community” — one that swelled to an nice commun at 7,000. audience estimated estim The sessions began in 2011 as an educational program in ccollaboration with the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College. Three years later they evolved into a program ffor amateur and professional musicians and public audiences.

Ulysses Golden was born in Augusta, Ga., on May 21 1890. Census records listed him as Mulatto (an outdated, offensive term today meaning of mixed race). He left Georgia early in life and moved to Buffalo, NY, obtaining a job with the New York Central Railroad as a dining room cook, later advancing to porter. With salary and tips he raised seven children.

Some followed working for the railroad too. Arthur born in 1924, the fifth of seven, was different. He went to college and became a scholar, choosing a career as a journalist and contemporary writer. Patriotically, he served in both World War II and the Korean War. Coming home he married, and the couple’s son, James, was born July 16, 1955. In 1956, they bought a home at 200-02 115 Ave. in St. Albans. They had the distinction of being the first black family on the block in a generally all-white neighborhood. They endured the slurs. The next door neighbor moved out and a black

teacher, Grover Belton, moved in, becoming a neighbor and longtime friend.

James graduated Andrew Jackson High School in 1973 and went on to Queens College. He became interested in radio, working for WWRL. In 1992 he started working for Rush Limbaugh, was given the alias Bo Snerdley and the rest is history.

His childhood home is currently up for Q sale for $ 589,000.

The Long Island City Partnership wants the people of Queens to know that the neighborhood is back from the pandemic in living color, both figuratively and literally.

As a symbol of the recovery, the neighborhood development organization has unveiled a series of art projects in the Court Square area to illuminate the streetscape as residents, office workers and visitors return to the community.

“We were thinking about how can we really welcome and say thank you to those who have stayed here throughout, but also welcome back to those who are returning and just lighten the mood,” said Liz Lusskin, president of the partnership.

“The Ribbon,” the centerpiece of the public art installations, is made up of tube-like magenta structures that were erected across several parts of Court Square.

The structure contains 100 rotating iridescent panels that are in the process of being inscribed with notes of neighborhood appre-

Lusskin said that the idea originated as a way to reflect the “mixed-use” nature of the area — a combination of residential and commercial space — to engage everyone from curious children to

workers on their lunch break. “The Ribbon” is one of three commissioned projects that recently went up in the area. Others include a construction-site mural by graffiti artist Queen Andrea on a fence located at 27-01 Jackson Ave. and a 760-foot multipanel mural along the Thomson Avenue Bridge.

To execute “The Ribbon,” the LIC Partnership hired Hive Public Space, a design firm based in the neighborhood and run by a resident, to take the reins of the design project. Alexandra Gonzalez, the design firm’s president, said that her proximity to the site during the pandemic made it especially personal for her to work on the project after spending an unprecedented amount of time at home in the neighborhood during the past year and a half.

“I spent quite some time in every single one of these public spaces and thinking about what else we could do, how else could make them more exciting and more engaging for people,” Gonzalez said.

That’s where the love notes idea came in. In addition to the physical structure, Gonzalez brought on digital artist Alexis Zerafa to create an Instagram filter called “Dichroic Vessels” to pair with the installation.

The augmented reality software projects floating vessels and whimsical iridescent colors on one’s phone camera as they view the installation.

Gonzalez said that among the love notes that have come in so far, a lot have focused on appreciating public spaces.

“It really took something as big as an epidemic to really [shake] everyone and make them realize how pivotal they are for our wellbeing, for just resting, for healing, for sharing ideas — sometimes Q protesting,” Gonzalez said.

Now, at the age of 19, she plays “almost at a professional level,” her mother said.

“I take it very seriously,” Mimi said in a written response to an email from the Chronicle. “I see all music by visuals.”

She only began to sing two years ago, Tomoko said of her daughter. But, Mimi explained, “Singing to me is more connected to my soul, my emotions and my own expressions. I feel singing is natural to me. I often get very emotional while singing.”

To that, she added, “The fingers have limits, but the voice doesn’t.”

She will be displaying her prodigious talents at the next in-person jazz session on Dec. 8, which begins at 7 p.m. Sessions take place the second Wednesday of each month.

Is Max a Scher-thing?

New Mets General Manager Billy Eppler knew he would have hands full building a belowaverage roster — especially a paper-thin pitching staff — something he acknowledged at his introductory press conference.

Eppler generated goodwill from Mets fans over Thanksgiving weekend by signing top-tier free agent centerfielder Starling Marte, his former A’s outfield teammate Mark Canha and power-hitting infielder Eduardo Escobar. The big deal, of course, came on Cyber Monday, when word came the Mets had reached an agreement with one of the best pitchers in the game, Max Scherzer, on a three-year, $130 million contract.

There is little doubt Scherzer is a first-ballot Hall of Famer when he becomes eligible. It is hard to quibble with his addition given the Mets’ lack of pitching depth. He has managed to stay healthy throughout his career. I can attest he is friendly toward the media, and from all I hear, is a great teammate and a leader in the clubhouse.

The latter has been in short supply for the Mets in recent years. They’re hoping Scherzer will impart wisdom to up and comers Tylor Megill, David Peterson and Matt Allan.

While there are powerful positives, there are concerns. With Scherzer now 37, it is safe to say Mets owner Steve Cohen is paying a fortune for

past performance. As those radio and TV ads for investment firms always say past performance is no guarantee of future results.

Mets fans in the early 2000s were just as excited when the team signed such future Hall of Famers as Pedro Martinez and Tom Glavine.

While it would be unfair to call them busts, the bottom line is they did not deliver the way fans were anticipating.

There is also a question of whether Scherzer really wants to be in Queens. He made it clear to the Washington Nationals this past summer that he would not accept a trade to the Mets. He was dealt to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Scherzer is highly active in the Major League Baseball Players Association. The mantra of the union is to extract the most lucrative contract its members can from team owners. My guess is Scherzer would have been content to re-sign with the Dodgers for far less than he got from the Mets so he could enjoy the glamorous Southern California climate and lifestyle, but he did not want to be seen by his peers as having left significant money on the table. That would have been even more noticeable this year as the union and the owners must iron out a new collective bargaining agreement. The Mets still need at least one more legit hitter. Eppler should set his Q sights on Kris Bryant.
