ack in May, a spokesman for Mayor Adams was asked about a bill introduced by Councilman Bob Holden (D-Maspeth) that would mandate a cost analysis of rehabilitating Rikers Island versus replacing it with four borough jails at a cost of more than $8 billion by 2027.

“This administration will always follow the law, and the law currently says the jails on Rikers Island must close on time,” the spokesman said. “To follow the law and protect the safety of the communities and all involved in the borough-based jail projects, this work is proceeding.”

On Aug. 29, however, both Adams and Comptroller Brad Lander expressed concern that self-imposed city deadlines could be jeopardized by a growing jail population.

Lander visited Rikers with Councilwoman Carlina Rivera (D-Manhattan) and public Advocate Jumaane Williams.

A law on the city’s books mandates that Rikers be closed as a jail by 2027.

“After declining for years, the number of people incarcerated at Rikers has climbed back to a little below 6000 people,” Lander said in an email from his office. “The borough-based jails are intended to have a total capacity of 3300 people. Prior to Covid in 2019, the City

Adams, in a transcript from his press conference later that day, had numerous ques-

tions for Lander.

“First of all, we’re going to follow the law,” Adams said. “But can you ask the comptroller a question for me? I believe we’re 2,000 above the number of what we stated the count was going to be ... So, I would like the comptroller

to tell us, what do we do with those inmates that’s not going to fit into the borough-base d jails? What do we do with them? See, I nee d the folks that are idealistic to deal with the realism of this.

“When you still have a higher number o f people that can fit into the borough-based jails, what do we do with those that continue to do shootings, robberies, assaults, rapes, and other crimes?”

Adams suggested that some of his critics decide on a plan B. But the mayor said the administration’s path is clear.

“We’re going to follow the law,” he said “The law calls for the jails to be closed. We’re going to follow that law.”

Significant construction already has taken place on a future parking garage and municipal building behind Queens Borough Hall. The existing former Queens Detention Facility, located behind the criminal courthouse on Queens Boulevard, will be demolished. The new site has been discussed as being 29 stories tall with 886 beds, including 126 for women.

Other jails are planned for the Bronx, Brooklyn and Manhattan. The jails are in the 10-year capital plan and will be funde d through the sale of bonds.

Planters will move to Cross Bay Blvd.

Traffic circle tubs near 88 St. to be refreshed and moved to medians

The “infamous” Lindenwood planters in the red traffic circle at 153rd Avenue and 88th Street will soon be moved to the Cross Bay Boulevard medians, the Howard Beach Lindenwood Civic announced last week.

The tubs, which were filled with plants and made into a modern art installation, were part of a beautification effort by former Councilman Eric Ulrich in 2021.

He had appropriated $38,5000 in funding for the Queens Botanical Garden to erect the greenery in partnership with the civic, Community Board 10, the Department of Transportation and Queens-based artist team Combo Colab, the Chronicle reported at the time.

It was set to remain in place for a year and aimed to brighten up the “empty eyesore,” Ulrich had said.

Over time, the vessels became a point of contention and proved hard to maintain, despite help from the West Hamilton Beach Volunteer Fire Department, and residents wanted to see brighter arrangements in them.

The civic wanted to relocate them and Councilwoman Joann Ariola (R-Ozone Park) had expressed the idea of wanting to put planters along Cross Bay Boulevard anyway so it made sense to use these.

“We’re going to do some type of evergreen in the middle,” Phyllis Inserillo, copresident of the civic, told the Chronicle.

“Then for the holiday season we can decorate them with solar lights and it’ll look nice. And other times of the year, there will always be colorful flowers around the evergreen,” she said.

Two will remain in the traffic circle to

deter drivers from cutting through it. The plants and art pieces have been removed as they await relocation.

The circle has no actual barriers and Inserillo said it can be confusing, especially to those not familiar with the traff ic pattern.

Many still have opinions on the area.

One Facebook user commented on the civic’s post that she’d like to see a tree

planted in the center like the traffic circle at the entrance of the neighborhood. Another was grateful that two tubs would remain because she has seen cars “race across” the circle. One man said he wanted stop signs to return.

The planters are set to be moved sometime this fall, Inserillo said, with help from Jay Frango of the civic and once they get Q the go-ahead from the DOT.

Fans of live horse racing in Queens will not have to leave the borough over the next few weeks, as the regular Belmont Park fall season will be moved to Aqueduct Race Track in South Ozone Park to accommodate ongoing construction at Belmont.

The New York Racing Association, in an article by Pat McKenna posted on its website at nyra.com/belmont, said the 28-day meet will begin at the Big A on Thursday, Sept. 15, and run through Sunday, Oct. 30. Live racing will take place Thursdays through Sundays.

The construction at Belmont, located just the other side of the Cross Island Parkway in Nassau County, will create tunnels to allow vehicular and pedestrian traffic to the track’s infield.

NYRA said, in addition to providing expanded access, the tunnels will serve as a conduit to the infield for commercial vehicles, allowing the agency to completely reconstruct the Belmont main track and its two turf courses. The

tunnels will also provide NYRA with the opportunity to consider the installation of a synthetic track in the future.

“This investment in the future of Belmont Park will transform our racing operations and pave the way for a broader re-imagining of the facility,” said Dave O’Rourke, NYRA president and CEO. “The shift to Aqueduct this fall will minimize the overall impact on the racing schedule, and ensure continuity for the Belmont spring/summer meet and Belmont Stakes presented by N Y R A Bet s. We appre ciat e t he patience of our horsemen and fans as we enter this period of transition at Belmont, and look forward to an exciting fall at the Big A.” NYRA expects main track and turf training to resume in April 2023, meaning the 2023 Belmont Stakes, the third jewel in thoroughbred racing’s triple crown, will proceed as scheduled.

Approach seeks to address mental and physical needs of students

As school returns this week, one thing is on the mind of many: safety. Mental and physical health and safety have been on the decline following the pandemic and tragedies like the school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, last spring.

This week, the city Department of Education announced its approach to doubling down on school safety.

“This administration is prioritizing the reimagining of our commitment to supporting the whole child from the day they enter our schools to the day they graduate,” Schools Chancellor David Banks said in a press release from the DOE on Wednesday.

“Our families’ biggest concerns should be on the studies of their children, which is why we are doubling down on this work to take concerns about safety out of the equation.”

The administration’s approach includes 200 new school safety agents joining the ranks starting on the first day of school plus an additional 650 who will be in training throughout the rest of the school year.

The DOE is also providing enhanced emergency readiness training including active shooter exercises, which were held throughout the summer in collaboration with the NYPD and Louisiana State University.

The Division of School Facilities also conducted a survey of 1,400 buildings to assess classroom door locks, exterior door locks, alarms, panic buttons and more.

The DSF identified 1,300 issues across all schools and worked to address them by the first day, according to the DOE. One elected official is calling for more.

Councilwoman Joann Ariola (R-Ozone Park) sent a letter to Banks last weekend calling for all entrances of schools to be locked.

In the letter, she cited a meeting she had in June with school safety officials, principals

Everyone agreed that a plan could be put together for this to happen, Ariola said in the letter.

“We live in uncertain times, where illegal guns are easily obtainable and mental health is not addressed as efficiently as it should be,” she wrote.

She continued, “Let’s make this the most outstanding year we have ever seen for the Department of Education by putting safety first and locking all school doors that guard the ones we hold the most dear.”

The DOE’s plan also includes measures to provide emotional support for children, such as assigning social workers directly to superintendents instead of having them centrally based and increasing restorative justice and violence interruption initiatives.

The department also outlined its ongoing work to combat the spread of Covid-19 and Q monkeypox.

Sno’ more snow days: Banks The days of kids wearing their pajamas inside out to bring on a snow day are over for city students, Schools Chancellor David Banks announced on Tuesday.

Students will instead be expected to participate via remote learning in the case of inclement weather.

“With the new technology that we have — that’s one of the good things that came out of COVID — if a snow day comes around, we want to make sure that our kids continue to learn,” Banks said in an interview on Fox 5’s “Good Day New York.”

It is expected to make the mandated 180 days for students to be in school easier to reach.

A United Federation of Teachers spokesperson told the New York Post that teachers are expected to have a plan for a “digital classroom” in place by Sept. 30.

Baby parade in Ham Beach The end of summer was marked with displays of creativity and fun in Hamilton Beach at the annual Baby Parade hosted by the New Hamilton Beach Civic Association.

Howard Beach remembers This year’s 9/11 remembrances in Howard Beach will be marked by a new addition to the community: a tree grown from the same one that was saved from Ground Zero.

A September 11th Remembrance ceremony will be held at the Rockwood Park Jewish Center on 84th Street this Sunday at 2 p.m. near the site of the 9/11 memorial mural, which was unveiled last year.

And that was more than overridden by the safety element — what better place could you possibly find to keep potentially violent people locked up than an island surrounded by treacherous waters?

Of course communities from Kew Gardens to Chinatown that are slated to get the new jails objected. And of course their objections were duly noted and duly shelved.

Construction on a new parking garage and municipal building next to the old Queens House of Detention is underway, work that is tied to the upcoming demolition of the former jail and erection of its replacement.

Of course the $8 billion projected cost of the four new jails will turn out to be far higher, because that’s just how it goes with long-term government projects, and also because rampant inflation and supply chain woes driven by the Covid crisis kicked in only after the plan was set.

The money will be borrowed, through bond issuances that will leave the taxpayers on the hook for many years.

But beyond the reduction in people’s safety, the dismissal of community concerns and the costs, the most egregious error made by those who pushed the borough jails plan through was the belief that the number of detainees needing to be locked up could be radically reduced, as if by magic. Events of the last few years show this to be folly.

As planned, the four jails will be able to house up to 3,300 people. Right now there are a little under 6,000 locked up on Rikers Island. Only fools and ideologues believe that number is too high. Just about every day we learn of another heinous crime committed by someone with such an egregious record that it boggles the mind he wasn’t kept behind bars. And according to a source in the know, the number of people arrested in the city climbed 26 percent in the first half of this year compared to the same time last year, and the number of criminals sentenced to city facilities jumped 184 percent. That’s what’s needed.

The disparity between the number of people the last administration and City Council hoped would need to be jailed and the number actually behind bars now came to a

Never forget 9/11 Dear Editor: I’m greatly troubled by the belief by some who think we need to move on from the events of 9/11, 21 years ago. There are those who think there has been too much talk of 9/11 and believe that event is ancient history. We lost thousands of good lives on that day, as well as in the subsequent war that was generated in Afghanistan, where we lost many good men and women who fought the war there for 20 years. Many of our members of the military who did not die came home with many disabilities.

Let us not forget the 343 firefighters who gave their lives to save the many on that day of infamy during the attack on the World Trade Center. Let’s also remember the first responders who gave their all and who are sick and dying from the effects of 9/11.

Remember, a husband lost his wife, a father lost a son, mothers lost daughters and friends lost friends. How does one forget? We need to remember all that was lost on that day of terrorism. Future generations need to know about what happened on that day.

When we disregard history, we are doomed to repeat it. head last week when city Comptroller Brad Lander and Mayor Adams got into a tiff about the time line to close Rikers. The law now mandates that happen by 2027.

“We have to have a plan B, because those who have created plan A, that I inherited, obviously didn’t think about a plan B,” Adams said. “If we don’t drop down the prison population the way they thought we were, what do we do?

No one answered that question.”

What we need is the repeal of the law mandating that Rikers not be the location of any jail as of 2027. Instead, new, modern jails, with all the recommended creature comforts, should be built on the island, with the nightmare facilities that exist there now torn down. This is the idea behind legislation pressed by City Councilman Bob Holden of Maspeth to study the idea of building at Rikers instead of elsewhere. But we don’t expect that to happen any more than we expect to see better policing, the repeal of the state’s insane bail “reform” law of 2019 and the serious reworking of the Raise the Age law of 2017. These are all things that would make the city safer, but Albany is not on board. If the criminal justice pendulum is swinging at all back toward common sense, it’s taking far too long.

Campus disturbed by racist ranter

Cops summons man and Queens College responds to student needs

A man spewing racist and anti-religious epithets outside of Queens College last week was silenced by police who confiscated his megaphone and ticketed him last Wednesday.

Throughout the week, the man, who officials said is not part of the Queens College community, yelled racist, anti-Semitic, antiChristian and anti-Islamic statements and conspiracy theories, oftentimes vulgar, out of a white Volkswagen near the entrance on Melbourne Avenue, according to information from a college spokesperson obtained via email.

A video of the incident was shared on Twitter by the nonprofit watchdog organization StopAntisemitism.org. The person who recorded the video was on campus and the yelling man is on the other side of the fence.

The person filming says, “This fellow has been sitting in front of the Queens College campus for pretty much the entire day now and nothing is being done ... he can cause a ruckus and he can spread intimidation and fear.”

The school’s Public Safety Office attempted to engage the individual but, because he was technically off campus, agents contacted the NYPD, according to an email from Queens College Chief Diversity Officer and Dean of Diversity Jerima DeWese to the campus community. The email stated that officials would

continue to work with the NYPD to ensure safety on campus.

Officers on Thursday night issued the 34-year-old man a C summons, or criminal court summons, for using a sound device for noncommercial purposes and without a permit, according to an NYPD spokesperson.

Officers observed the man in a vehicle, which was parked on a crosswalk, with his body “protruding out of the sunroof,” speaking through the bullhorn. He refused to stop and was issued the C summons as well as a parking summons for being on the crosswalk.

Among the things the man said, as seen on the video, were that Jews were siphoning the wealth of Germany and that “all these retarded colored folks just walk in here,” onto the campus named after a “f--king Jew.” The bullhorn was taken and vouchered, the spokesperson said.

In the email to the campus community, DeWese said, “When hate speech occurs, it has effects and consequences on those who are exposed to it.”

“We recognize the need to address these effects on an ongoing basis. As such, the Office of Compliance and Diversity and the Center for Ethnic, Racial and Religious Understanding at QC (CERRU) will be initiating a Campus Conversation and other community forums regarding the presence and impact of

An earlier email from DeWese last week stated, “While we respect the First Amendment rights of all people, we thoroughly condemn hate speech and wish to make it clear that Queens College is in no way associated with such harmful rhetoric.”

DCWP files suit against Starbucks City agency says Astoria employee was fired illegally

The Department of Consumer and Worker Protection filed a lawsuit Friday against the Starbucks Corp. in response to the firing of Austin Locke from the company’s Astoria-Ditmars Boulevard location days after he led store employees in a successful unionization push in July.

The suit, which was filed with the Office of Administrative Trials and Hearings, specifically alleges that Starbucks violated the city’s Fair Workweek Law, which says that fast-food employees cannot be fired without just cause.

The DCWP came to that conclusion through an investigation into Locke’s firing. That was prompted by a complaint which, with the help of Workers United, the union representing the Astoria-Ditmars Boulevard store, Locke himself filed with the agency in July.

The suit aims to get Locke reinstated and to have Starbucks pay him back pay and other compensation for work lost. The com-

pany would also be required to pay civil penalties, as the Fair Workweek Law stipulates.

Whether those things will be accomplished will be determined

by OATH when the case goes to trial. A trial date has not yet been set.

Asked about the case, a Star-

bucks spokesperson wrote in an email to the Chronicle, “We do not comment on pending litigation. However, we do intend to defend against the alleged violations of the New York City Just Cause Law.” The lawsuit, Locke’s firing and the Dit mars Boulevard

Locke is not the only Starbucks employee to allegedly be fired in relation to union activity.

Seven employees at a Memphis, Tenn., location were fired after they took part in an in-store inter view about their union effor ts earlier this year. In August, a judge ordered the company to reinstate them.

That was far from lost on Locke.

“I’m happy that I’m getting, you know, some traction in the legal case for my reinstatement,” he told the Chronicle, “But I’m more worried about the almost 100 other Starbucks workers that have been illegally fired by StarQ bucks.”

Glad to hear law enforcement addressed the issue by fining the individual and confiscating his megaphone. This behavior is vile and it won’t be tolerated in Queens.”

Councilwoman Lynn Schulman (D-Forest Hills) also condemned the act on Twitter, saying she was “very disturbed” to hear of it.

Rep. Grace Meng (D-Flushing) wrote on social media that she will continue monitoring the situation alongside the college and police.

“This kind of language [and] ideology has no place in Queens nor in the rest of our Q diverse nation,” she stated.

Summer recap, recognition The 102nd Precinct Community Council met following the summer break on Tuesday night, following the busy season and Commanding Officer Capt. Jeremy Kivlin’s exact three-month anniversary there.

Kivlin, left, gave a rundown of the summer, saying that the precinct did “some really good things” — including responding to over 100 noise complaints for large parties, issuing 393 parking violations for tractor

trailers parked overnight and seizing 81 ATVs and dirt bikes last month alone — but that there is still plenty to improve on.

One highlight came July 27, when Officer Christopher Scheer, second from left, saved a man from jumping off of an overpass of the Van Wyck Expressway.

Community Board 10 met last week for the first time following the summer break, remaining online for the time being with plans to meet in person in October if state guidance permits.

The meeting began with city Department of Sanitation officials reminding residents that curbside composting will return on Oct. 3 and also detailing plans for a renovation of the department’s garages on 150th Avenue.

Chair Betty Braton brought up the July news that the Travelodge on Redding Street in Ozone Park had been reactivated as a homeless shelter and announced that the board had also received a notice via telephone, not yet a formal letter, that the Hilton Garden Inn on 134th Avenue near JFK Airport had been as well, and that families were being moved in.

Braton also announced that the Department of Transportation had deemed that the stretch of Cross Bay Boulevard from 164th to 165th avenues should be considered for mobile speed enforcement.

The department will add the location to the existing list of proposed speed enforce-

ments sites and survey the area, she said.

A speed hump on 105th Street between 107th Avenue and Rockaway Boulevard will be installed as soon as resources become available, she added.

Over the summer, the board also provided written testimony in support of Councilwoman Joann Ariola’s (R-Ozone Park) bill to create an office to handle marine debris disposal and vessel surrendering.

The board also met over the summer with the Mayor’s Community Affairs Unit to present a “shopping list of all the ongoing issues” it has throughout the district and a meeting is set to follow with higher ups in the NYPD, above Capt. Jerome Bacchi, the 106th Precinct commander, Braton said.

Bacchi also gave an update of crime, which included arrests for petit larceny being up 65 percent this year, with 930 in total, accounting for over 100 per month.

“A lot of it is caused by recidivists, so ... if you contact the politicians and say, ‘Hey we’ve had enough,’ maybe they’ll do something to enact some sort of reforms that will address that,” he said.

Mayor, DEP say rain garden count to grow

Flood prevention initiatives announced in S. Ozone Park; Ramos wants more

As the city marks the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Ida, the effects of which have some displaced families still living in hotels, Mayor Adams warns that climate change could lead to intermittent weather abnormalities becoming the norm.

“Thirteen New Yorkers died in their basement apartments due to flooding,” Adams said. “This traumatized our city. But climate change is bringing longer droughts, stronger storms and heavier rainfalls to places all over the globe.”

To help mitigate the effects of the next colossal rainfall event, Adams and other elected officials and department heads were in South Ozone Park last Thursday to announce the creation of an additional 2,300 rain gardens, the continued expansion of the city’s Bluebelt program and other green infrastructure initiatives aimed at relieving some of the burden on the city sewer system that was overwhelmed by last summer’s rainfall.

The city’s sewers were built to withstand rainfall at a rate of 1.75 inches per hour, according to Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Rohit Aggarwala.

Last summer alone, the city experienced two separate instances of rain falling at a faster rate: Hurrican Henri, when per hour totals

“She has nothing to do with the so-called Duck Sauce Killer case and like anyone else feels terrible about what happened to Mr. Yan,” he said.

“And whether Glenn committed that awful crime or not, people were denied justice when that case ended by there not being a public trial so that everyone could have had that play out,” Bederow added. “But justice is not served for anyone by shifting attention and coming after an innocent woman because her name just happens to be Hirsch as well.”

Professor Joseph Giacalone of John Jay College of Criminal Justice is a retired NYPD detective sergeant and former commander of the Bronx Cold Case Squad.

He told the Chronicle that it is neither illegal nor uncommon for a prosecutor to play hardball in similar situations. He also said it almost certainly is not without reason.

“It’s not unusual that the police or a prosecutor would use leverage to try and get information from them,” Giacalone said. “But probable cause is needed to charge them, and since this is coming directly from the district attorney, he or she, whoever the assistant district attorney is, has probable cause, because you’re dealing with lawyers already.

“It’s not like the police could make a mistake here. This comes directly form the district attorney, as far as I’m concerned ... It could have been leverage [against Glenn Hirsch] immediately, but there’s other evidence that maybe they discovered, or could prove that she

knew about this.”

While he said that comments from a defense attorney have to be taken with a grain of salt, “his or her job is to do exactly what they’re doing.

“That’s why you have to follow the evidence … and when that’s coming directly from the District Attorney’s Office, especially in the age of criminal justice reform and all the other stuff that’s going on, they must have a pretty airtight case. In this environment, they’re not going to play games. Even though [Glenn Hirsch] is Q dead, they’re still doing this to her.”

JFK chamber to host 9/11 remembrance The JFK Airport Chamber of Commerce will host its annual 9/11 remembrance event outside Building 14, the Port Authority administrative building, on Sunday.

The event will begin at 8:30 a.m. Located at Building 14 is a memorial dedicated to those working for the Port Authority who lost their lives 21 years ago this weekend.

Kew Gardens Hills staple served community for more than 80 years

When Kew Gardens Hills resident Richard Reif first attended Main Street Cinemas back in 1946, a day at the picture show cost only 25 cents.

“You could spend the whole afternoon there, which me and my friends did,” he remembered fondly. “You got two feature films, a cartoon, a newsreel and an episode of a serial — and you could bring your own food.”

So it’s not difficult to imagine his disappointment when, after seeing Idris Elba’s latest film, “The Beast,” last weekend, he found out that would be the last movie he ever saw at the theatre, which closed its doors earlier this week.

It is rumored that the theater is closing due to a rent increase; however, the Chronicle was unable to confirm that, as owner Rudy Toolasprashad did not respond to multiple queries.

City property records show that the lot — which includes the movie theater and all the stores between it and the corner of 72nd Drive — was purchased by G & Y Main Street Plaza LLC in February of this year. It is not clear whether the purchase has any connection to Main Street Cinemas’ shuttering.

Like all theaters, Main Street Cinemas had previously closed during the earliest days of the pandemic. Though many other small film ven-

“I thought then it would close for good, but it didn’t,” Reif said. “This summer you know, I went to movies like ‘Top Gun: Maverick,’ and ‘Elvis’ and ‘Thor,’ and there were big turnouts — people of all ages, parents brought their kids

for things like the Sonic Hedgehog movie. So that really surprised me that it’s closing.”

The institution has been a staple in the community since it opened in 1941, when it was called the The Main Street Playhouse. It played the starring role in the lives of many young people over the years.

“I cried when Bambi’s mother was shot, and I’ve hated hunters ever since,” he recalled.

Though she could not pinpoint the first movie she saw there, Martha Taylor, who lives in Jamaica Estates and said she’s gone to Main Street Cinemas since she “was a little kid,” remembers watching “The Perils of Pauline,” an early 20th-century melodrama film serial, on countless Saturday mornings.

“That was part of the fun of going to those neighborhood movies,” she told the Chronicle.

Back when it was a single-screen venue, featuring both an orchestra section and a balcony, Reif said that teens sitting up top were rarely watching the movie. “The balcony became a makeout spot for teenagers,” Reif recalled. “So there was often more action in the seats.” (Double features of “The Virgin Queen” and “Tonight’s the Night” likely did not discourage them.)

State Sen. Joe Addabbo Jr. (D-Howard Beach) — whom the theater is touting for reelection on its marquee — noted that Main Street Cinemas’ closing could hinder the community’s ability to mingle.

“I hate to see it,” he said. “Whether it be because it provides a social site where people can have some social engagement, jobs — some local jobs that are lost there — and I hate Q to see an empty storefront.”

In the days leading up to Labor Day, the Chronicle asked Queens denizens, “How’s the economy doing?”

In typical Queens fashion, the answers were varied, earnest and passionate.

Gonzalez had good reason to be exasperated. It’s no secret that inflation has hit a 40-year high. Consumer prices in the Big Apple rose 6.7 percent between June 2021 and June 2022. City Comptroller Brad Lander noted that real hourly wage growth had “plummeted” due to inflation in his July 11 Monthly Economic and Fiscal Outlook. The drop is concerni ng, especially because N YC increased its minimum wage to $15 just a few years ago.

“The dollar is worth a lot less right now,” lamented Konstantinos Poulidis, 25, of Whitestone. “The government has been printing a lot of money and spending it recklessly, which is killing what’s left of the middle class.”

He does not believe the recently passed Inflation Reduction Act will curb inflation enough to make a difference. Poulidis added that supply chain issues have been bothersome: “I couldn’t get my car inspected for two months because of the semiconductor shortage.”

Gonzalez’s industry, graphic design, was negatively affected by the coronavirus. “The graphics business was hurt when advertising revenue went down during the pandemic,” he said. “It never recovered. My income is almost half of what it was during the height of Covid and much less than it was prepandemic. It’s an exceptional situation. It’s much harder to provide a decent life for your family now.

“At this point, I don’t care about politicians’ party affiliations as long as they have a positive impact,” Gonzalez insisted. “Recently, however, I think politicians’ efforts have been counterproductive.”

Burke is a bit more optimistic. “I think the economy is slowly leveling

But the city’s future is far from hopeless. Between June 2021 and June 2022, New York City gained 298,600 private-sector jobs. Its unemployment rate fell from 10.1 percent in July 2021 to 6.6 percent in July 2022.

Queens has the second-lowest unemployment rate (6.1 percent) of the five boroughs, bested only by Manhattan (5.2 percent). In April 2020 Queens had a staggering unemployment rate of 17 percent, so it seems the borough is trending toward normalcy.

Still, not everyone can snag jobs easily.

“Both my roommates have finance degrees and would be considered traditionally ‘employable,’” noted Michael D., 28, of Astoria, after shopping in Howard Beach. “But even they struggled through Zoom interview after Zoom interview when trying to find work.”

Speaking to the Chronicle outside the Queens Center mall, Keila G., an 18-year-old Applebee’s hostess from Elmhurst, said that all her friends are looking for jobs.

“I know the food industry is trying to get more people,” she said. “My friends are trying to find what’s available.

“I wish the government, or someone, would sponsor something or increase awareness of how we can get jobs and improve our situations.”

More generally, Poulidis asserted that small businesses deserve more attention.

“Many small businesses in Queens were on the edge of survival during Covid,” he pointed out.

“Maybe politicians should give them a tax break, instead of helping Boeing executives buy another yacht.

Because I don’t want Queens becoming one giant Walmart.”

Joseph Janis, a Howard Beach resident for the last 56 years, also was skeptical about elected officials.

“I’m lucky enough right now that I’ve got nothing to complain about when it comes to money,” the 86-year-old longtime Chronicle reader said outside Stop&Shop. “Politicians are smart, that’s how they got their jobs. I think, though, that sometimes they think we’re all stupid.”

Thirty years ago, political strategist James Carville coined the slogan, “It’s the economy, stupid!” The sentiment appears to resonate with Q Queens residents today.

Reduce your energy bills this fall with these tips The updates you make this fall can prepare your home for the long winter months ahead, helping you stay more comfortable all season while reducing your energy bills and other expenditures.

As you enjoy mild autumn weather, take time to ensure your home is equipped to handle the chilly months ahead. Following these steps will mean a more comfortable, energy-efficient winter: • Clean your air filters monthly. Dirty filters make HVAC equipment work harder and cause more wear and tear on your system. They also increase your energy bill and reduce indoor air quality.

• Compare the Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency of your heating system with newer models. If it’s below 13, you may want to consider a new, more efficient system. Remember, the higher the rating, the less wasted energy for a reduced carbon footprint. Be sure to choose equipment bearing the ENERGY STAR logo.

High-efficiency systems reduce your impact on the environment and can also save you money. You may also be eligible for a Federal Tax Credit if you select a qualifying model.

• Use a humidifier during colder months. It not only adds moisture to your home, it can actually make it feel warmer.

In turn, you’ll be more apt to lower your thermostat, saving money and consuming less energy.

• Check and maintain your insulation.

Improperly insulated walls, floors, attics, basements and crawlspaces drain away heat and can also lead to moisture imbalance.

Adding weather stripping and caulk around windows and doors can also go a long way to improving your home’s insulation.

• Turn down your thermostat. Keeping your thermostat five degrees cooler can lower your heating bills without affecting your home’s comfort. Install a programmable thermostat to regulate temperatures.

• Clean the furnace area. Don’t keep chemicals or cleaning products near your heater, and don’t store anything next to it that could impede ventilation. Keep vents and returns free of obstructions. Don’t lay carpet over vents, place furniture over or in front of them, or obstruct the flow of air.

• Have a technician give your HVAC system a pre-season tune-up. Make sure that everything is running efficiently before temperatures plummet. by Peter Kropf A two-minute walk in Flushing from Main Street and Roosevelt Avenue to the Kingsland Homestead is akin to time travel. Commerce and bustle subside, replaced by an uncanny quiet.

Fewer bus stops, more trees.

Most strikingly, tall apartment buildings suddenly give way to smaller, older houses, demonstrating that Queens, and its architecture, cannot be singularly defined.

It was fitting that architect Rafael Herrin-Ferri discussed his book “All the Queens Houses: An Architectural Portrait of New York’s Largest and Most Diverse Borough” at the Kingsland Home-

characters stead, an 18th-century farmhouse that is home to the Queens Historical Society and its museum, on Saturday, Aug. 27.

The 272-page book, which was published in October 2021 by Jovis Verlag, is a photographic

survey of the unconventional and eye-catching houses of Queens. Like many books, it was born from a smaller project and the author’s insatiable curiosity.

After moving from Manhattan to Sunnyside in 2009, the Spanish-born Herrin-Ferri, who graduated from Cornell University with a bachelor of architecture degree in 1996, was immediately struck by some of the peculiar architecture in his new neighborhood.

He quickly learned that quirky houses could be found all over Queens. The author began casually taking photos of such homes as he came across them. By 2013, however, he started to take a more organized approach, going block by block throughout the entire 108-square-mile borough.

Without a car, he would usually hop on the subway with his folding bike to reach his destination. When in a neighborhood, he’d bike up and down the streets, trying to pinpoint the unique among the commonplace with his camera.

Technology helped immensely. Google Street View proved invaluable in locating desirable houses. The architect also used geographicaltracking computer programs to map out his journey.

Ethel Agnes Zimmermann was born in Astoria on Jan. 16, 1908, the only child of German immigrants Edward and Agnes Zimmermann. Ethel’s father was a bookkeeper, who lived to age 98. Her mother was a schoolteacher, and she lived to be 91.

“Charlie Brown is the everyman of every person,” explained Dan Kuhlman, who is about to take center stage playing the iconic role in Royal Star Theatre’s production of the Peanuts-inspired musical “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown,” running four performances beginning Sept. 16.

In fact, he said, “Every Peanuts character is an archetype, so much so that we can all find a little of ourselves in each of them.”

Based on the world-famous comic strip by Charles M. Schulz, the show (featuring book, music and lyrics mostly by Clark Gesner) brings together Charlie Brown and all his childhood friends, both human and fourlegged, who, through songs, monologues and short scenes, offer insight into the true meaning of friendship.

From footage of rehearsals filmed a couple of weeks before opening night, it’s obvious that the cast of six adults, under the direction of Alison Kurtzman, marking her “official directorial debut” on the Queens community theater scene, have acquitted themselves quite naturally to bringing out the childlike exuberance of the youngsters they portray.

In addition to Kuhlman, the cast consists of (in time-honored alphabetical order) Dan-

Not only is Fleming’s character a generation younger than herself, he’s also of the opposite sex. No problem for Fleming, who finds that recalling what it was like to be a child allows everything to fall into place.

Beyond that, she said, “It’s very nostalgic

to have an understanding as an adult what the lines (spoken by a much younger character) mean.”

The company includes some fine vocal soloists, offering strong choral work on numbers such as “Beethoven Day,” a paean to Schroeder’s musical idol.

The backdrops and set pieces create an imaginative world appropriately in keeping with the comic-strip origins of the show, pro-

viding a cartoon-like feel.

It’s fairly common practice for actors to make their way to Manhattan when seeking employment. In this case, for Kuhlman, the opposite holds true.

A resident of Manhattan, he found his way here for the chance to experience the daily trials and tribulations of the title character.

“My goal is simply to perform,” he said.

“For me, it’s about the role, the show and the company, not the location. As long as the MTA can get me there, I’ll be a part of it.”

Kurtzman, a Forest Hills resident, admitted that “it’s definitely a bit daunting to take on a show that is such a beloved part of so many people’s lives and childhoods. It has been a lot of fun to reconnect with all these characters and really get into their psyches.”

She predicted that audiences are “going to come away smiling,” adding that they “might even learn a thing or two about the true meaning of happiness.”

Performances will take place at The Mary Louis Academy (176-21 Wexford Terrace, Jamaica Estates) on Sept. 16 and 17 at 8 p.m. and Sept. 17 and 18 at 3 p.m.

piqued his interest. Most houses he shot had been altered in the last two decades. At the talk, he noted two major recent trends in Queens: increases in both polychromatic brick and stucco.

After snapping thousands of photos, Herrin-Ferri finished surveying the borough in February 2020. He then selected about 230 of his best pictures for “All the Queens Houses.” Three-quarters of the book’s photos are accompanied by short descriptions that provide a fun, architectural evaluation.

He consulted the city’s Department of City Planning and Department of Buildings websites, as well as ZoLa — NYC’s zoning and land-use map — to research the houses’ architectural histories. He even examined tax photos via the city’s Department of Finance.

The format is mostly one house per page, which was intentional. “When you open the book, the houses are paired together to create a somewhat cinematic shot, as if you are walking with me,” Herrin-Ferri said.

The homes range from brick row houses with unconventional colors in Jackson Heights to a minimalist, Mission-style twofamily home in Elmhurst and what HerrinFerri calls the “Bi-lateral Banner House,” a

When Min Chi Ho Pi and her husband first moved into their Flushing home in 1995 to become pastors at the Chinese Christ Gospel Church, they did not know that the homes on and near Peck Avenue had a knack for flooding.

And though the house had weathered several floods over the years, none came close to Hurricane Ida — the water rose all the way up from the basement and halfway up the window in their first-floor living room.
